So I had this brilliant idea to take a picture with CILLA LEE-JENKINS:FUTURE AUTHOR EXTRAORDINAIRE by @susansmtan while doing the Cilla pose (swipe right for a better look at the cover), but a certain small person had other plans (“Hey sweetie want to go help daddy take the picture?” “No, I stand with mommy.”) ah, Instagram motherhood... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But on to the book. Cilla was one of the funniest MG characters I’ve read in a while. And I loved that this sweet story features a biracial Chinese/Caucasian heroine. I can’t wait to share it with my daughter. Bet you thought I was running out of truly great Chanukah books, but nope, I've saved some of the very best to share over the next few nights as we celebrate... "Oskar and the Eight Blessings" (2015), for example, is absolutely gorgeous, and as Publishers Weekly notes: "wonderfully original in every way." Written by Tanya and Richard Simon, and illustrated in lush winter colours by Mark Siegel, the story tells of a young Jewish boy sent alone, like so many, to an aunt in NYC, in the wake of Kristallnacht and the onset of the Holocaust. Arriving on the eve of both Christmas and Chanukah, his journey on foot across the city to his new home is one of both trepidation and magic, as he witnesses and becomes a part of some unforgettable moments of kindness. Full of sparklingly magical cameos by a host of historical figures who, it's explained in a fantastic afterword, all happened to be in NYC that one night in 1938, "Oskar and the Eight Blessings" is everything you could ask for in a holiday read-aloud. The Pennypackers take their first official vacation as a family with lots of interesting happenings along the way.

This was an interesting book.  I think it’s good for middle schoolers to 9th graders.  Lots of twists and turns throughout the book keeps the reader entertained and guessing what could happen next.

📚A of JAF recently finished reading: Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick • Rating: 🐲🐲🐲🐲/5 • ⁉️ #qotd: You ever finish reading a book and just not know how to express your feelings about it? • Well, that’s me with Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgwick. It was my third book of the year and a book I’ve had on my shelf for over three years now. My inability to express my feelings isn’t a reflection of a bad book, quite the opposite. • Ghosts of Heaven is a very unique, slightly strange, and highly thought-provoking book told in 4 “quarters” set in four different time periods (pre-historic to distant future) with only humans and the idea/concept/theme of spirals connecting them. • Sedgwick himself says in the introduction that the quarters can be read in any order, creating different meanings or interpretations for the reader, which in turn adds another level of weirdness and uniqueness to the reading experience. • It’s not a book I’d recommend to everyone, but it is a book I’d recommend. I don’t make sense do I? It’s okay, I’m seeing spirals everywhere. Don’t believe me? We often talk about being inclusive, but so many children's books meant to be about inclusion are just dreadfully ham-handed morality tales, unappealing to actual kids. On the other hand, there's a lot to love about Deborah Heiligman's "The Boy Who Loved Math: The Improbable Life of Paul Erdos" (2013), a picture book biography of the renowned Hungarian mathematician. What's the connection, you ask? As soon as I read this beautiful book, gorgeously illustrated by LeUyen Pham and strewn with brightly coloured numbers and mathematical symbols, something jumped out at me. Here was an academically exceptional man who saw the patterns in everything around him, yet struggled with the activities of daily life; a man who could be oddly blunt and eccentric but was nonetheless deeply beloved of those around him. He seemed ... familiar. And sure enough, when I looked deeper, I learned something not mentioned in the story: that it's believed that Erdos, like me, had Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. ❤ In my opinion, this book is brilliant not just for it's biographical elements, but for its beautiful, sympathetic portrayal of an autistic human, fully formed, dignified and worthy of love and respect INCLUSIVE OF, not DESPITE, his disabilities. Read this book to your kids.
