Connor adores what you do with your hair. he's never been the adventurous type with his appearance. When he started going gray he just accepted it and moved on. He never thought of hair dye, not even in a fun way. The first time he saw you he couldn't believe hair could be that bright, that neon. It was of course the first thing he noticed about you, but certainly not the last. He's always coming up with nicknames for you around the color of your hair, too. When you ask him for help he's more than eager. He's never done anyone's hair, let alone his own, so you do need to walk him through it at first. Once he's got one side of your head done, he's confident he can do the rest without any hand holding. He ends up getting covered in the dye, his hands, his face, even some in his own hair, but he looks at you with such pride you can't help but compliment his best efforts.

Kendall thinks when you change your hair you're being cute. He looks forward to it every time you change it. He's always heard that hair dye and piercings and tattoos, any way of self-expression, is unprofessional, but you're far from it. Your hair can be blue, green, pink, etc. and it doesn't stop you from kicking ass in the board room. Logan has his own views, but he can't stop you, and Kendall doesn't want to. When you ask him to help for the first time he's nervous he's going to mess up. You laugh, explaining there's no way to mess it up when you're just painting your head. He's slow and careful, working ever so carefully. In the end it looks perfect. You thank him with a kiss and that makes him blush. He knows you can do a far better job, but you like when he does it. You enjoy the company.

Shiv has always been told, her whole entire life, never to touch her hair. Everyone compliments the color before anything else. She never minded, though she knows it annoys others. She's never felt the need to change her appearance in the way. She finds that cutting it is more satisfying than anything else. You, on the other hand, feel the need to change it monthly, sometimes even weekly. Shiv is an expert in everything somehow. When you ask for her help she looks like a professional, despite it being her first time. She loves when you change your hair, especially right before events and parties. The color is always bright and she can help you pick out certain outfits that really bring out the color. She's neat while she works, far neater than you've ever been. Not a drop touches any other surface besides your hair. You joke that she should quit her day job.

Roman calls you a troll doll from the moment he sees you. Once he gets to know you, there are of course more personal jokes at your expense. What else were you expecting? He secretly loves it. He never got the chance to learn how to express himself like that, he never wants to stand out from the crowd, too afraid of what will happen. You're not. You love the bright colors, it makes you feel more like you, and he loves you. When you ask him for help it's a bit of a disaster. For starters, he's adamant he won't get any on his white collared shirt. Stubborn as always, you can't force him to change. He gets it absolutely everywhere, all over himself, the bathroom, you, but he's pretty proud of his job. Despite the dye all over you, staining you, your hair-dyeing clothes, you look great. He doesn't need your thanks, he's on top of the world right now. He jokes he could do it professionally.

logan is an alpha, obviously. an alpha's alpha. his first wife (connor's mom) was an omega, and that ended extremely poorly and he swore off omegas altogether, so his subsequent partners were betas.

partially he doesn't like omegas because he views them as weak and he despises people who won't push back at him, even though he will punish you for pushing back at him. he isn't threatened by other alphas but he likes to appear in total control so he (unofficially, because it's illegal) bans alphas and omegas from being on the board, with a few exceptions; so frank, karl, all of them are betas.

exception one: gerri, an alpha. she's not technically on the board, and she's a woman, so even as an alpha logan sees her as a half-step below him. being the only alpha with years of experience is part of what led to her being interim ceo.

exception two: shiv, an alpha. the only alpha out of all four of logan's kids. she did the sensible thing and married an omega. being the only alpha also contributed to her feeling that she was entitled to waystar royco when she came back; in what world would logan let anyone besides an alpha run his company?

exception three: kendall, an omega.

logan told kendall, age seven, he would inherit the company, based on the assumption he would be an alpha. then he hit puberty, and he has spent his entire life since then trying desperately to make up for his "deficiency" and prove to his father he can still be worthy. rather than being a drug addict, he is addicted to hormone treatments that make him functionally an alpha, but they have terrible side effects on him. his wife didn't know he wasn't a natural alpha until after they were married.

stewie is a beta who takes similar hormone treatments to pass as an alpha--because it's convenient and fun--but he doesn't have a Complex about it like kendall does. he also doesn't have nearly as bad of side effects as kendall does.

roman is a beta, which mostly suited him until he decided to try to get involved with the company. he liked being in the middle, not so powerful anyone had any real expectations for him, not so weak as to be a target. he could slide under the radar and get away with whatever he liked.

connor is also a beta, not strong OR weak enough to merit attention; something he's been trying to make up for his whole life. the presidential run is just another cry for attention, especially since for the most part, only alphas are ever elected to the highest offices. willa is also a beta, so people found it even weirder that he decided to have a real relationship with her instead of finding an omega like a normal person, especially since he has such a complex about power and control.

tom is an omega. good upbringing, good genes, a good sensible match for shiv. logan tolerates him fucking around at the low-mid levels of the company mostly for shiv's sake. tom surprises him by have a little bit of a backbone, but its not nearly enough to make up for what logan sees as his deficiencies. it makes tom coming out on top in the end even funnier; logan is rolling in his fucking grave that an omega is in charge of his company.

greg? greg is an alpha. everyone is always shocked when they learn this, and greg is always like, "what?? why is that surprising?? i'm a normal alpha!!" no greg, you are not.

how to eat with no mouth is a kenstewy (! shocking) fic concept that's been bouncing around my head for a bit. at the moment it exists solely in my brain/disorganized notes app rambling, but the idea is a series of vignettes from stewy's pov centering on hunger and desire in his relationship with kendall: stewy thinks of himself as a hedonist that loves to indulge in everything his wealth affords him. before he can know or say that he loves kendall he knows he's hungry for something. so he's continually frustrated by the fact kendall won't let himself or doesn't know how to want things and be hungry.

his attempts to get kendall to want things and indulge in desires ultimately result in like. codependent not-cannibalism more than anything but that's the fun of it. sometimes trying to get your boy best friend to eat is literal when you're 15 and your mom says he's too skinny, it's a shame he didn't eat anything at your house, and sure you don't eat anything at his house but that's because everything there smells like rot. sometimes it means you're in college and you keep sleeping with the girls he says he's kind of interested in and then making out with him when you're both wasted. sometimes it means you enable his addiction even when his kid brother tries to interfere because roman treats starving like a religion, and you can't let kendall get drawn back into that. sometimes it means you're not sure whether you want him to eat or whether you want to eat him

Hi! Just wanted to pop in and mention how much I enjoyed your meta on Kendall and Logan. The line “To give it to Kendall is to let him wear that trauma - a trauma he doesn't understand - like a cloak and tell him it’s a gift.” will live in my head rent free from now.

To piggyback off of the idea you mention towards the end of your post on Kendall’s perceived vulnerability – I think you’re definitely onto something there.

Warning – the rest of this kind of long so feel free not to post publicly but – to my read, so much of Logan is grounded in the trauma of losing his family and I think there’s an echo of that in how he understands and reacts to Kendall. Logan is fearful of losing anyone on anything other than his own terms, and Kendall, by his very nature, evokes some of that fear. Kendall is generally understood within the family to be soft and emotional and by extension vulnerable either to substances, his own mind, or being led astray by ‘dangerous’ figures like Stewy (at least in Logan’s way of thinking, rightly or wrongly).

I think this tends to pluck at Logan’s more protective instincts.  But when Logan exercises that protectiveness, it functionally allows his own ‘vulnerability’ to show through. Logan is generally so reluctant to acknowledge the past, his own traumas, and his perceived weaknesses, that revealing those sides of himself, even indirectly, creates a type of unique connection. Logan might see Kendall’s soft bits, but Kendall gets to see Logan’s too. I think that may be part of what drives the relationship we see between them throughout the show and was the foundation for a certain kind of intimacy and emotional reliance in both directions that deepened and grew over time.

Logan trusts Kendall intimately and lets him in in a way that he can’t with his other children because it would require letting them into a softness or ‘weakness’ he may resent or refuse to acknowledge within himself. He doesn’t want anyone to see those parts of him. But Kendall’s own softness inherently brings that out in him and, although not all the time, it does allow a kind of intimacy to live solely between the two of them. I think it’s this very intimacy that allows Logan to trust Kendall with his pills/health and, ironically, makes him a good pick (in Logan’s mind) for sacrificial lamb at the end of S2.

I don’t think the above is the only driver at play (or even that the characters are aware of any of this), but I think it may be a meaningful one. And while Kendal isn’t Logan’s sole emotional crutch, I think he tends to take the full weight of Logan’s love – which I guess is in and of itself a form of violence because that’s all Logan knows how to give.

[As an aside, I’m endlessly fascinated by Logan’s refusal to lean on Shiv in this particular capacity, which arguably might be expected as she’s his only daughter and yet, I can totally see Logan being completely against the idea of his little girl seeing him with any weakness whatsoever. Just endlessly interesting to chew on Logan’s relationships.]

I totally agree with everything you've written here. That shared space for vulnerability and intimacy due to the very specific nature of Kendall and Logan's relationship feels really right, and the way that places a unique sort of love and violence at the heart of their dynamic is it's own sort of devastating.

It's interesting too, because I think in some ways that vulnerability also comes out of their respective relationships with the truth.

I said it in a post quite a while ago, but I find there's this really compelling juxtaposition between Kendall and Roman where Kendall can be vulnerable without being honest, while Roman can be honest without being vulnerable. It's a contrast that I think is particularly unique, and it's interesting to look at that against Logan, because Logan's sort of both and neither.

Which makes sense given Logan's relationship with the truth often feels pretty unique too. Logan as a character never seems entirely honest, but he's not really a dishonest character either. His truths seem uniquely tied to time, and a moment of warm and genuine honesty like him telling Shiv that it's her at the summer palace can become a bitter lie in the future.

For Logan, I think truth and honesty has to be tied to the present, because as he says in the show, there's just too much history. The past can be complicated, it can be twisted, it can be marked by your mistakes as much as your successes, sure, but for a character like Logan, the past is also punctuated by unmanaged trauma. As a result, the past for Logan is something that can't be touched, and I think that in s2 in particular is something Logan tries to teach Kendall, sometimes cruelly and sometimes with the only type of kindness Logan knows how to offer.

After all, we know that for Kendall, particularly in s2 and s3, the past is something he can't stop touching. He presses his finger to the bruise of what happened with Doddy repeatedly, and the secret of it does create this further space of intimacy. Kendall won't know until after his father dies that Logan felt responsible for his sister's death, but Logan will die knowing Kendall feels responsible for Doddy and simultaneously tries to alleviate him of the guilt of that while also using it to keep him close.

In some ways, it's a sort of shared trauma that Logan never lets Kendall know is shared at all, but then doesn't that just sum up Logan's relationships in general?

(And yes re: Logan and Shiv! I think the added factor of losing Rose / blaming himself for Rose too is absolutely key in seeming invincible and infalliable to Shiv in particular, which is another really interesting thing to consider).

I apologize if there's something already on your blog about this and I didn't find it, but I was watching tailgate party and realized that Shiv had spent the entire episode pacing around one apartment complex 6000 steps over and that the Roys do this a lot.

My memory of the last few seasons is fuzzy (<- binged it before and now doesn't remember shit) but I feel like the Roys spend a lot of time in very large, usually open spaces, with wide walls and tall ceilings, and usually ones we've seen before or are expected to see again and that a lot of important scenes happen *outside* of these spaces. Important meaning either big moments or iconic ones or sometimes just transitonary. Kendall had his Next-Jesus moment out in the ocean, Tom started throwing water bottles in that cramped ass escape room or talked about his marriage out on the beach, the entirety of Kill List happens outside of ATN offices, Logan meets Mattson for the first time on a personal island, Roman went to a random one story office environment for a fucking business school and was never the same character (well. compared to S1 Roman) again, they have that reverse Jesus thing over cruises on a cruise ship, etc. I feel like plane scenes could both fit into this or break it depending on the season but at least for other scenes I feel like there's a pattern here.

Outdoor spaces or parts where they actually put their shoes outside onto sidewalk always feel semi important to me but it doesn't even have to be outdoors specifically. Like, even just the honeymoon suite was different enough from every other building we'd seen the show have, and that's when Shiv admitted to cheating!

Do you think there's something to this, or do you have your own thoughts? I'd be interested to hear more if only to appeal to my ego ;-). There's other things that could connect to this like the grey-white-brown-dark blue color palette damn near every scene is in vs. scenes with real color inside of them and Kendall's asking why Sophie was "on the street" being indicative of how he thinks she should be raised (based on how he was raised and also how he can recognize the manipulation and abusive inherent to his father's parenting but not the more subtle isolation and neglect) and the fact the Roys are literally running an actual rat race while trapped inside Waystair Rocyo 1/2 the time but I have to stay focused on one thing when I write shit down even if I'm connecting dots in my head or else this ask won't even be remotely legible.

yeah i haven't really written anything comprehensive on this, but i do think there are a few interesting points with regards to how the show uses the characters' environments. forgive me for bullet-pointing lol, maybe you can help string these things together into something more cohesive. but:

yes, the characters often spend most of an episode trapped in one location, even one building. in part i think this is a function of the presence of playwrights on the writing staff, and the way many episodes flirt with the three classical unities of tragedy writing (time / place / action). so, lots of episodes are 1 day only, or 2 or 3 max, and often a character will be mostly confined to one location during that span. in part this helps make each individual episode really tight internally, but it also contributes to that persistent sense that the characters are trapped (within their circumstances, company, family, etc)

indoor vs outdoor is an interesting thread. one thing that has always stood out to me is that the show has a tendency to use natural sunlight not as refreshing, enlightening, etc, but as blinding, overwhelming, and even dangerous. the sun almost kills logan in s3, there are those shots in 2x10 and 3x09 where everyone's squinting in the bright light, there's a similar effect in 'austerlitz', etc. this contributed to the overall sense of discomfort that the roys experience, despite all their material luxuries; it also contributes to the sense that nature and the natural world is an alien, external force that appears threatening—this sense also comes out in all of the animal metaphors they use, which emphasise the brutality they see in the animal kingdom and in nature generally

if we're talking places, i also must bring up the presence of bathrooms on the show. these are quotidian rooms, but also dangerous ones, in the sense that they exist to purge a civilised society of its filth, and the whole process tends to be marginalised and wilfuly ignored. so, i've always liked that succession has a lot of scenes set in bathrooms, and often characters are able to speak differently in the bathroom—sometimes more intimate (kendall and stewy, tom and logan in 3x05), or more direct (greg and logan in 2x08), or they're allowed to say things they couldn't elsewhere (roman and mencken). bathrooms are also sheltered personal spaces, where the characters can retreat and hide (kendall using them to do coke, shiv practicing a smile in 1x02, greg rehearsing his congressional testimony)

the waystar offices obviously have that very 21st-century glass-and-steel aesthetic that telegraphs new money, a certain neoliberal attempt at severance from systems of social and cultural meaning-making, etc. so, moving the characters to other locations is effective because, in contrast to the kind of soullessness of the waystar building, it makes the other places stand out and emphasises the meaning we can glean from the sets alone (like, the gut-punch of dodds's house in contrast to the sort of corporate default)

in regards to the idea of control and confinement within luxe spaces—yes, this is clearly something we see many of the environments convey (the ultimate expression of this being the anti-suicide wall that logan puts up to pen kendall in). this is really a discrete material expression of how waystar operates in a broader sense, constraining people whilst appearing to create more options and more freedom (also a basic characteristic of neoliberal modes of production, lol)

again i'm not sure i have a thesis statement here unifying all of these observations lol. but i do think the show does well at using its environments and settings to tell us a lot about the characters, the company, and the broader world they inhabit.

I'm not American so I don't know anything about Thanksgiving and tbh it doesn't seem like something Lukas would be interested in - I imagine he'd just be reading out anti Thanksgiving posts whilst everyone else ate that weird Sweet potato marshmallow thing in silence. I actually think that Midsummer would be their main holiday but i'll go with a RomeLukas Christmas:

Their first Christmas together is shit, mostly because it doesn’t occur to Lukas to explain to Roman that seeing flashing Christmas decorations, listening to people sing Christmas carols off key, the expectation that gifts will be appreciated with gratitude and enforced touching is a social and sensory nightmare for him. Then there’s being expected to eat other peoples food, none of which are on his safe list, so Lukas retreats to the safety of his mums house in Sweden. She cooks everything he likes, the way he likes it and never puts lights on the tree so he can actually relax for once. He bluntly turns down Romans offer of spending Christmas with the Roys because he assumes that Roman will come with him to Sweden, only for Roman to reveal he’s been bullied into attending Kendall’s aka Logan 2.0’s family Christmas. They end up parting awkwardly with neither of them sure as to why the other one is in a mood. Over in Sweden, Mama Matsson takes great care to explain to Lukas that as this is Roman’s first Christmas without his dad, it makes sense that he would want to be with his family even if they are a bunch of “vapid energy vampires with only two braincells between them.”

Meanwhile in New York Roman spends his Christmas either being bullied and picked on by Kendall or being made fun of by Caroline for his new “homosexual lifestyle” and his as of yet unresolved daddy issues. Shiv is still banned from all family gathering so he doesn’t even have anyone that might stick up for him and is miserable the entire time. That is until Lukas calls him at the midway point between Swedish and American Christmas and they FaceTime for hours meaning that Roman doesn't have to participate in the brutality that is the Roy family game night.

Their next Christmas is spent in Sweden with the Matsson family which consists of only Lukas, his mum, his ancient Uncle Valter and his dad ashes that Mama Matsson puts on top of the TV so he can “still be involved”. With no maids or chefs, everyone has to pitch in which initially terrifies Roman because he can barely boil an egg, let alone put together a Julboard. Thankfully he gets put in charge of decorating the tree which he loves and making sure Uncle Valter stays awake until the food is ready. Then after dinner Lukas and Uncle Valter teach him how to play Viking chess which he’s awful at and then they watch Swedish Christmas TV. It's all kind of odd but still very cosy and calm, however Roman spends the entire holiday on edge waiting to either be yelled for doing something wrong or witness the fucked up family dysfunction that his previous Christmas’s have been filled with. 

It’s during his second Christmas spent with Lukas that Roman releases that they seem to be re-living the same Christmas every year; right down to the food timings and stuff they watch on TV. He doesn’t think much of it until they spend the next Christmas in New York and Lukas has an absolute meltdown over an inflatable light up Rudolf that Greg brought in for the office Christmas party. His behaviour at the actual office party is even worse, teetering between frustration and tears so Roman takes him to one of the empty offices to calm down. Thats when Lukas explains that he hates all the noise, all the lights, constantly having to mask... he just wants to stick with the Christmas he's used to. Suddenly the Groundhog Day christmases make a lot more sense so Roman declines their place at the Roy Family Christmas much to Kendalls fury. He didn't even want to go anyway and they have a low key Christmas that year spent on the sofa under a pile blankets and eating Mama Matsson’s Christmas sandwiches. Whilst Lukas recharges, Uncle Valter gives Roman a history lesson on Swedish christmas traditions and then he takes Mama Matsson out to see the The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

The agreement is to not bother with presents which they both promptly ignore, but it’s small stuff like a bag of really good weed from their trip to Thailand or framed picture of the pair of them being silly at a GoJo party. Although Lukas did break from tradition one year and buy Roman an island. They stick with Swedish tradition and exchange presets on Christmas Eve, although Lukas always holds one back for Roman to have on Christmas Day.  

New Years they spend partying at whatever weird and far flung place they can find along with Lukas’s friends and Tabitha or by themselves in one of Lukas’s many elusive boltholes.

interested in your general thoughts on shiv’s sexuality — when do you think she started dating/sleeping with women, is it something her family would know about, is she honest with herself about it or is it just a “fun thing.” anything you feel like sharing!

ooooh love this topic. shiv is def bisexual to me, though i genuinely don't see her ever using that label. i think she would've started sleeping with women in college, maybe the first time during a threesome with some fleeting boyfriend & she realized she liked it. that's where i would actually see her pursuing the majority of her early experiences with women since that's kind of a safe place to explore it without anyone being able to make assumptions about her, and also definitely makes her a cool girl among the guys 😭

i 1000% read all of the scenes with her and lisa as having been either romantically or sexually involved (probably both) & i would imagine she had to have at least one homoerotic friendship that kind of sealed the deal for her, but perhaps if i was to read into things with lisa even more, i would guess that shiv knew she could never feasibly be with a woman, so whether it was lisa or not, i def see shiv having at least one relationship with a woman that could've been really great, but she wouldn't let herself have it.

i think after college when all of the soul searching and realizations would've been complete, she would've went back to her original framing and viewed it more as a sexual preference for pleasure, but i do think she would freely pursue sex with women without it needing to include men so like progress i guess??? it's definitely majorly on the downlow but obviously we saw how excited she was to have a threesome with tom & how happy she was to do it only with the girl infront of him so 😭 i don't think she'll deny herself the knowledge that it please her, but i think she DOES ignore the fact that it makes her gay. because shiv roy cannot be gay<3

on that point i think: roman knows (snooped through her aol chat one christmas break), kendall doesn't care enough to question it, connor wouldn't even think to guess, and logan would never even let himself think it. caroline probably figured it out the second shiv came out of her<3

I feel like people always say they dislike roman specifically cause he pushed Kendall at his birthday party, but like on the same day Kendall presented massive fake newspaper articles making fun of his siblings for their age (Connor), gender (Shiv), and sexual issues (roman). So I feel like it was a little bit justified considering Kendall humiliated them in front of everyone he knows and everyone who matters in high society. He also shoved roman in the lift in the Prague episode and I feel people forget that. Esp when roman spent that episode opening up a little about the trauma he encountered in childhood when his dad would compare him against Kendall and Kendall would always win. Tho I’m a Roman (and Shiv) girlie so it may be clouding my judgement

There's always a few scenes for each character that people tend to use as evidence for why they're "the worst" or "a sociopath." That one's obviously a big one for Roman-haters. I don't agree, though, that Kendall's mock-newspaper articles or pushing him in the lift were that bad-- not as like, isolated incidents or anything. The newspaper articles were funny, funnier than Kendall actually is, even if they were kind of embarrassing, especially when contrasted with Roman's cockshyness with Matsson later on. I still don't think it was too bad, though. Roman can take a joke for the most part. We know what he's like if someone goes too far, even if he does revert back to joking (e.g., S2E10 after the hostage situation, S2E3 with Shiv).

I don't think pushing him in the lift was all that bad because at that point, Roman did kind of want Kendall to do that, to legitimise and reinforce the hierarchy by performing a version of it as a ritual. In Too Much Birthday, Roman tried to initiate it by taunting Kendall into hitting him but, Kendall refused to participate. It was disappointing to Roman and in a last ditch effort, he (limply) pushed Kendall in hopes that Kendall would retaliate. Between Kendall looking like this tearful Pepe and Shiv's pathetic white girl loser dancing, Roman thinks it's funny that he, of all people, is winning because like, he's not even trying to "kill" their dad. It's just that his siblings are so fail that he's actually the "favourite."

I may have said some things before about the "you're not a real person" comment that I think was quite upsetting to Roman but, I kind of take some of it back. Like, it might still be a valid reading but, I have been floating another reading of it. I think Roman doesn't see himself as a "real person" per se, not within the Roy's broader idea of this concept (person defined by their body) so, it's not like Kendall is telling him anything new. The issue is that he says that he's "not a real person" and yet refuses to follow through with that statement by hitting him. Roman has had a crush on Stewy since he was 14, back when Stewy and Kendall were far too cool to bother with Kendall's shit stick little brother and he had to go out of his way to irritate them to get a shred of attention. Roman tried to sleep with Willa at a party once upon a time and she didn't want to but she also didn't laugh at him. She was kind enough to let him hang off the end of her posse of impossibly beautiful friends all night and Roman decided she was too nice to be so cold. And he knows that he tries to be stone but anything and everything can melt him. But mostly Connor - he can never be as mean to his biggest brother as he means to be. So Roman introduces them thinking they'll be a good match. Willa won't be mean when Connor has his umpteenth bad idea but she won't lead him to them either and in return Connor will pay for anything and everything she wants

(Roman makes one joke about Willa being a hooker at a family garden party and she never lets herself be caught in a one on one conversation with him again. Roman might actually feel bad about that one.)

"Kendall's on his way," Roman says, looking at Stewy upside down from where he's sitting in the absolute wrong way on an armchair. "He's like, fucking some girl, or something. I wasn't listening."

"Good for Kendall."

Roman laughs and plays with one of his rings, a double walled thing with an inner part that spins, a helpful fidget for someone like him who doesn't sit still very well. Stewy's known him for about six months - two months longer than Kendall - and has yet to see him be still for longer than a few short moments at a time. He watches Stewy with dark eyes as they wait.

"You know, this door locks," Roman tells him. "From the inside, even. We could lock that door and make him stand outside and, you know, listen."

Stewy rolls his eyes. "We've been over this. I'm not stupid enough to get in bed with a Roy, no matter how many times you bat your eyelashes at me."

The response is a mocking, childish imitation of Stewy's words that he doesn't bother to comment on. Instead, he watches the door until Kendall lets himself in a minute later, oxfords freshly shined and a cigarette hanging out of the corner of his mouth. He doesn't look disheveled, which means that Roman was just trying to poke at Stewy with his earlier comment.

"Hope he wasn't too much of a bother," Kendall says, kicking the door shut. "He likes to uh, to sit at the big boy's table, but hasn't quite figured out how."

Roman sticks his tongue out at his brother. "You're mad I get more pussy than you."

Stewy stifles a laugh behind his hand. It's disarming in a way that doesn't feel dangerous to watch the two poke fun at each other. He never had a sibling relationship quite like that, and he knows from plenty of late night conversations that Kendall treasures these verbal sparring battles with his siblings, because it reminds him that they still care enough to speak. It's a fucked up family.

"By the way, I'm supposed to tell you to be more careful. Dad said he's not bailing you out of Juvie again if you get caught."

His words sink in and Stewy tilts his head to the side. "Juvie? Roman, how fucking old are you?"

"However old you want me to be," Roman answers petulantly, but he won't look at Stewy now.

Kendall crosses his arms and there's something sad in his eyes. "He usually says twenty one, because it's easier, but you're smart enough to remember he's younger than me. He tell you eighteen, nineteen?"

"Nineteen," Stewy confirms.

"He turns seventeen in a few months."

An uneasy feeling rolls through Stewy's stomach at the knowledge. He's not the most moral man around, but even he draws the line somewhere. It's not as if he's ever done anything, really, with Roman, but there are jokes he's made and substances he's shared that he wouldn't with a teenager.

"Don't take it personally," Kendall says, coming closer to bump their shoulders together. "He's a pathological liar and definitely has a crush on you."

"What are you, twelve?" Roman says, a little too quickly.

"What are you, sixteen?"

Stewy can sense the two of them nearing an argument, so he sets a hand on the small of Kendall's back to calm him down. This has the opposite effect. Kendall turns to him, cups his face, and kisses him. Stewy kisses him back, of course; it's fucking Kendall, he won't pass up the opportunity, even if it's something they've never done before and he thought Kendall would never be into. When they break apart, Stewy can't look away from him, but Kendall is already staring at Roman again.

"He's off limits anyways. Now, what intel did Dad send you to tell us?"

Connor, oh Connor. There's such a huge age gap between you and him, he was basically your father growing up. You didn't love that relationship though. You already had Logan critiquing your every move, now you had to live up to Connors expectations, too. It was too much. You know he was just looking out for you, but some of the things he said could be hurtful. He was already out of the house by the time you were born. His ranch is so far away and it kinda ended whatever relationship you still had. He calls you every once in a while to check in, but thats about it. He wishes he hadn't been so hard on you, that he could have just been your brother, but you can't go back. Leaving Connor behind was easy. He had his life, his big plans, and you hard yours. He'll always be your oldest brother, but you were never really close to begin with. The distance between you just solidifies these ideas.

Kendall has always been so wrapped up in his own world to give you a second thought. He was a young adult by the time you came around. He'd been promised the company since he was seven, eight years old. He had competition with Shiv and Rome because they were closer in age, but you were a baby. You were nothing. You never wanted to deal with him anyways. He was either in a manic tornado or coming down from it, sulking. Whatever emotion he was feeling it affected everyone around him. Everyone had to deal with it. You learned early in life it was too much of a hassle. Especially when he started doing coke and drinking too much, when his marriage fell apart, you gave up on ever being close. You thought Rava would help ground him. It's not that he didn't love you, it's just that he didn't think about you. You weren't someone he was competing with for love and affection. You were just you. When you decide to leave you don't leave a text or message. You don't think he'll notice you're even gone.

Shiv didn't step up as a big sister like you thought she would. She loves you, of course she does, she loves your brothers, too. But she has her own life to think about. She gas a career and goals and it takes everything out of her. She doesn't have time to wonder how the baby of the family is doing. Even when she was home she was studying or with friends or competing for your fathers approval. She texts you every once in a while, but that's about as close as you get. She's closest to Kendall and Rome because of their ages. You came too late. They'd already established an alliance. Like Logan couldn't fit a whole woman in his head, Shiv couldn't fit a whole you in her head. No matter how old you get, she still sees you as the baby. It hurts to leave your one and only sister, but it would hurt more if you were closer. You're not. You never will be.

Roman was already in military school by the time you came around. Despite being the closest in age, your brother has a lot of issues. Logan was downright cruel to him, abusing him, abusing all of you. He sent him away. When he came back he was different, not that you'd know any different. It's not that he avoids you, he just doesn't know how to talk to you. He cane make fun of the rest of them, but it's like he doesn't know you enough to say anything. You're strangers. He never lets you close enough to get to know him, to feel like actual siblings. Sometimes you're jealous of their relationship, Rome, Ken, and Shiv. Mostly though you know you'll never get past the walls they've built up. When you leave you wonder what he'll do now that the company and Logan are gone, but it's never enough to keep you to stay.

Bonus! Logan was a lot older when you were born. He was never close to any of his children. You wouldn't be the exception. You could never do anything right in his eyes. When he dies, it hurts, but not as much as it does your siblings. You never wanted to hide love. You never fought for his affection. You learned a long time ago that whatever you did or tried or pretended to be could never win his love. Since then, he was just another angry man in your home. Deciding to leave was easy. He was gone. You weren't fighting g for successor, either. That was your siblings' job. You're not sad to be leaving. You're not very close with your family, you never were. After everything that's happened between them, you're not sure you ever will be. Being on your own will feel freeing from the anger and sadness and hate and hostility. They're your family but they're also the Roys and that complicates everything.

A/N: I've kinda been putting this off because tbh the only games I play is Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 😅 I feel extremely under qualified to be writing this lol, but I didn't want to turn it down!! Connor definitely wants to play alongside you. He likes older games and games you play in an arcade. It was one of his favorite places to sneak off as a kid when Logan forgot about him. New games with new consoles are a bit of a jump from that, but he's eager to learn. It takes him a long time to catch on and he's always got questions, but you never mind. Mostly he likes watching you. You're quick, you think on your feet, and you make it look easier than it is. When Connor gets stuck on a level, he goes to you immediately. He doesn't like getting stuck and hates getting defeated by the boss level. He shares your enjoyment of it, even if his games are a bit more pixelated and a lot easier to beat. He's always surprising you with the latest game knowing how happy it makes you, knowing it'll make your day.

Kendall likes the mindless games he can play on his phone. He understands the escapism completely, checking out of the real world for a little while to play a character who can do and say whatever in a (usually) better and far more interesting world. He sits beside you when you play and watches, giving you advice. He's definitely going to play alongside you and is a sore loser, though your kisses make up for it. He plays video games with his kids and remembers being taken to the arcade with Connor as a child. It's something he particularly enjoys, but rarely has the chance to play them. He likes that you share the same interests, that you find such joy in it. It's something you can do together that makes him feel like a little kid again. It's rare you get to see him wear a smile so genuine.

Shiv doesn't really understand. She never really got into video games, she never saw the appeal, nor was she allowed to. She'd always been told that her hobbies should have a greater purpose and not to do them just because they're fun. She doesn't disregard your enjoyment though. In fact, it makes her so happy to see you so happy, to break a new record, to get to the next level, to talk to the group of friends you've made, etc. She'll stand behind you and ask questions, watching you, though she swears she doesn't understand and isn't interested. You offer her the game console if she ever wants to try it, but every time she politely declines. She still has it ingrained in her head that hobbies should look good on an application or be helpful in the workforce, not just for fun, for enjoyment. She can't let herself have fun for the sake of fun, not yet at least.

Roman would never dare admit to it, but he really enjoys the kinds of video games that are slow paced and lead a very simple life, like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, etc. The more violent ones make him jump and he can't stand all the yelling and noise. He watches you play a lot, sitting beside you, making fun of you. You nudge him, laughing, telling him that he's distracting you. Roman never gives your hobby a second thought, it's just something you do, something you enjoy. He'll stay up late with you and blame the games for missing his alarm, though he's all smiles so you know it's not serious. If you do play more of those horror, violent games he just excuses himself, busying himself, not wanting to make you stop, but not wanting to listen. He loves to see you so happy, especially when you get to the next level or beat the big boss. He's all sarcasm and jokes, but really it makes him happy to know you are.
