So, the theory about the shadows behind Neo in volume 9's intro being clones she creates with her semblance is pretty popular. I mean, is obvious, right? Nine clones, nine shadows, nothing to think much about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But there is something that doesn't feel quite right with this theory. Like I think that yes, the people in shadows might be Neo's clones, but I don't think that she creates them willingly.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
So shadows 2 and 3 resemble Neo's/Trivia's parents, Carmel and Jimmy. Shadow 1 is Roman. I am not going to debate who are the other shadows, we are not here for it, but I am on board with the theory of all of them being people of Neo's past (the dead people theory is good but I see some issues with that).
The thing with Neo's past is that everyone in her past but Roman, fucked her up so much.
Melanie and Miltia? Bullied her.
Ms.Malachite? Tried to kill her.
Hei Xiong? Tried to kidnap her to use her like an exchange coin against her father.
Dr.Mazarin? Thou he has some points in his favor (trying to understand Trivia and so on), but bet he had something to do with the drugs her parents gave her.
Lady B? Yes, she also has some points in her favor (you are not broken scene has to be one of my favorites), but at the end that didn't matter, she used Neo/Trivia and also tried to kill her.
There are good people, of course, her teacher Aureal really didn't do anything bad to her and my heart to those cops for trying to help her, but there are not people who have shaped Neo's live in anyway like the ones in the above, bet Neo doesn't even remember how they look like.
And then are her parents, both working with criminals, both discriminating Trivia for not being able to talk, both never listening to her neither trying to understand her, both trying to change her into something she was not, both locking her, and the list goes and goes, but I am not here to say why those people are the worst of the worst.
But reading all of that... why Neo would want to create clones that look like the people who fucked her up so much? Neo doesn't want anything to do with that people, neither with her past or with her life as Trivia. She hates that name, she hates the Vanille and everything that comes with them. She is repressing all her past and never looking back, and god knows that she is a master in repressing.
There is a reason why she is so obsessed with avenging Roman: He is literally the only one who ever tried to understand her, listen to her, truly cared about her, protect her and show her love. There are some issues with Roman? Sure, but that doesn't erase the fact that Roman is the only person, the one thing, that truly loved Neo. If a clon is going to be created willingly, that would only be Roman, not the people Neo wants to push aside, repress and forget they ever existed.
But that is the key word, willingly.
In a world where everything inside of you (good and bad) comes to the surface, is not farfetched to think that a semblance (a representation of the soul) gets out of control. We have seen this already, Neo didn't know what she was doing, creating all those clones, she gained control of it pretty fast, but that doesn't change that for a while she didn't know what the heck she was doing.
Tumblr media
(just look at her, my baby is so confused)
What I think is that the Ever After won't let her repress that part, lets call it the Trivia Vanille part, for so long. One way or another, everything will come up to the surface. And what better way to do it than than using her semblance against her for her clones to change into all the people she wishes to shut and forget?

I'd like to point something out regarding Neopolitan's character in relation to two others:
Light Spoiler for Roman Holiday
In Roman Holiday, we learn that Roman Torchwick was the first, and up-'til-now, only person who could understand Neo without the use of her scroll, whether it be through typing or its speaking application. Not even her own parents could understand her without such aids, including her Communication/Spelling Board. But Roman could. In fact he was so adept at understanding her nonverbally, that he was shocked her parents couldn't, or rather, wouldn't.
And as we all know, he was eaten by a Griffin. Thus leaving Neo without that companion who seamlessly understood her.
That is until Neo found her way to Mistral and tracked Cinder down with the help of Little Miss Malachite in volume 6. And from there, Cinder has been shown to easily understand Neo; as easily as Roman had. Continuously and unfailingly, Cinder has never had any trouble understanding Neo.
The two people who have shown unwavering understanding to Neo are the two people she had been allied with. One now dead. And the other, one who had betrayed her.

Something I just realized about episode 9 was that Neo was probably in a lot worse shape mentally and emotionally than we realized, and that says a lot, because she’s obviously broken now.
This will contain spoilers for Roman Holiday and episode 9
First, let’s look at the actions and words of the tea party guests. Roman leads things off, obviously. He’s the only actual enemy of Ruby in the group, and he’s the only figure in the group to actually mean anything to Neo. From here, the others take their turns taunting and attacking Ruby but none of them interact with each other or with Neo. After Ruby drinks the tea, and Neo enters her emptiness, what do we see? We see Roman. He’s talking to Neo. That would seem to indicate that Neo is not controlling that. I may be wrong here, but I don’t think he was actually present in the room between Ruby’s ascension and Neo’s possession. He was just talking to her in her head.
Now, to Roman Holiday. We learn that Neo Politan started out as a hallucination in the mind of one young Trivia Vanille. Neo was, shall we say, a bad influence on Trivia, always suggesting mischief that they could get into. I’m not going to retell the whole story, but Neo ends up taking over after some shenanigans and she starts her new life with Roman.
Anyway, the connection. I don’t think Roman ever left Neo’s head. I think he’s been there, driving her forward on this death spiral since the day she found his body. It would explain her single-minded drive and determination for revenge at any cost. The one person, the One Thing you had, dead, but not gone, urging, pushing you to avenge him.
Maybe I’m reading too much into this. Maybe Neo is just a one dimensional character with no nuance like her critics say. I don’t think so, though.

Also can we talk about how fucking terrified Neo is when the Cat is talking to her, and then beginning to possess her? Like it’s clear in that moment that she’s never been more scared in her life but after losing the last thread tying her to reality she just doesn’t have ANY strength to flee or fight back

what would roman torchwick think of neo's choice at the end of v9 and her wanting to be like them
I think he'd be happy for her.
Yeah it sounds crazy considering who Roman is but remember at the end of Roman Holiday after she saved him Roman says "I don't know why you would stick with a guy like me. With your skills, you could be anything, even a Huntress."
Not to mention Roman has expressed several times to Neo that she shouldn't stick with him, even at one point pleading with her to save herself instead of worrying about him when her life was at stake.
I also believe he wouldn't want her to pursue revenge. esp if it has her costing her own life and well-being. Basically it goes against his philosophy of survival.
So yes imo, I think he'd be happy for her choice

“I wasn't crying about mothers," he said rather indignantly. "I was crying because I can't get my shadow to stick on. Besides, I wasn't crying.” J-M Barrie, Peter Pan
Help! Roman seems to be irremediably stuck in the denial stage.
Tumblr media
He denies Logan's death and his subsequent grief, rewrites the fact that he’s partly to blame for Logan souring on Gerri and in fact wasn’t he helping the old gal actually, he can’t face up to the unsavoury dealings that the realities of being in charge entail etc.
Tumblr media
He’s also completely unable not to see his own plight in others; Rushing over to Kerri, {the jilted shadow chosen one who displays her uncontrollable pain because Logan promised her the world and taking her side against the older arguably wronged woman who’s exacting her revenge} is the thing getting his most pained whines of this episode. His most selfless act is also his most self-centred one... "Oh this I can understand, I too was dad’s to fuck. He also promised me things he didn’t make good on and when I lost him, I didn’t even get the comfort I deserved from the person I’ve wronged”.
Tumblr media
This season is hailing honesty as the single redeeming feature for enduring relationships within that universe.
Connor and Willa of all pairings have gotten there.
The sibs manage an imperfect version of it.
Shiv and Tom keep trying to say something real to each other.
Roman and Gerri? No, she doesn’t care about getting fired, it’s fine. He didn’t hurt her at all. They, who have always used the shadows of business talk to live their romance, are utterly failing at honesty and openness.
Unless Roman starts facing up to reality in general, this will end tragically for him. Do pills and transferring caring skills to random Logan-approved people help keep a genuinely loving personality at bay?
Tumblr media
It’s all incredibly ominous by the way the mounting tension of the dangers facing Roman. The guard dog arriving, the nazi watch, the blowup at Shiv about Mencken, conveniently ignoring his role in Gerri’s fragility (of course nazism and masculinity are the only things that allow him to ignore what he’s done). There are also outspoke references to paedophilia in the obit and the Gauguin paintings. Roman is fine, he’s smiling, he’s moving on, he’s 'pre-grieved'. And frankly, who notices the cracks? Ken maybe…
Yeah there’s no way this doesn’t end taunting a progressive crowd, T-posing for his sins.
Tumblr media
Gerri will be fine reassuringly. Roman is proving with every minute that passes that not allowing herself to be wooed by him had been the right call all along. She’s proving how the tiniest sliver of impropriety could have been her death - including at Roman’s hands. And she’s acting every bit as smug as she should.
But of course now she loses CEO and he gets the leverage of knowing Logan was going to fire her. They both have prejudicial information about each other they’re not currently using...
So was a sham marriage better than a romance that wouldn’t say its name? In succession? Welcome to our era of fearing the answer…

throwing out a guess here that Neo’s semblance + the Ever After’s weirdness lets her create full proxies of people and she’s using that as a way to not process her trauma at all

I think it would have been great if the parents or Trivia had said something to Neo when she was leave drugged
A bit more of tormenting would've been really cool, I feel like only mainly the people who read Roman Holiday would've caught it, but it's something I would've liked to see still, anyway-

Ruby and Neopolitan: The girls with a lot of problems
Spoiler Warning: This post contains spoilers for RWBY Volume
***
Ruby has snapped leaving her Team and Jaune. I feel the Ruby vs Neopolitan conflict is imminent and oh boy do these girls have a lot of problems.
Ruby's Trauma
For Ruby's part, we are just now starting to get a clearer picture of how deep her pre-series trauma lies. How her unresolved trauma from Summer's disappearance and how Ruby has based so much of her own identity around Summer.
Add all of that to the fact that she lost her school, lost two friends and was separated from her team. Ruby's life since the fall of beacon has been a break necked race to stop Salem and secure the relics with little time to rest let alone process and heal.
Now while I think succeeding in protecting Haven and being reunited with Penny has helped Ruby to a degree, everything that happened with Ironwood, Salem and Cinder these past two volumes has all but erased that progress toward healing. Atlas and Mantle are gone, Salem has two relics and Ruby has lost Penny a second time.
Neopolitan's Trauma
Everything we know thanks to the Roman Holiday novel paints the picture that Neopolitan had a messed up home life.
After disappointing her family's expectations of her one too many times, Neopolitan is sent to Lady Browning's Preparatory Academy For Girls.
It is during this time that Neopolitan meets Roman who accepts her for who she is rather then what someone wants her to be. Working together the two of them discover Neopolitan's parents role in the gang war between the Spiders and Xiong Family.
Roman helps Neopolitan escape the cage of abuse her parents would keep her in. Roman and Neopolitan set off to make a new life together as criminals. However, it can not last because Roman's grudge on Ruby sets himself on a path of self-destruction. Despite not physically being there to witness it, Neopolitan believes that Ruby is the reason Roman is no longer with her.
The Path Toward Overcoming their Trauma
Now one possible scenario Ruby and Neopolitan might face is that, Ruby is ready to take the Blacksmith's offer to ascend but Neopolitan stops her. Neopolitan wants revenge on Ruby and has no intention of letting her take the easy way out.
The two begin to fight and their emotions start to effect the Ever After. Neopolitan gets the upper hand or vice versa and is about to give the killing blow when the two of the are caught in a Punderstorm.
At this point it becomes evident that the only way out of this is by working together and learning more about the other.
