Imagine being part of a minority group that not only has faced genocide on a number of occassions but also when history regales the horrors of other minority groups that were slaughtered yours is regularly forgotten or left out. And then western culture takes the racial slur that people associate with your minority group and then profits off of it and it becomes a trend to purchase things with your racial slur all over the product which has little to nothing to do with your ethnic group.
And then people apply that racial slur to themselves and use the excuse of "reclaiming it" when we all very well know that those people "reclaiming it" aren't actually part of your ethnic group. But your diversity makes a great cover for anyone that thinks that they can slip into it like a skin.
Additionally imagine if your ethnic group was so culturally appropriated that it isn't even treated like an ethnicity but a spiritual movement by western culture.

Something in the Peaky Blinders community that has caught mine and a few others’ eyes, in the frequent and so relaxed use of the word “Gypsy” when not in book context.
As someone part of the Rroma community, having once lived in Romania, moving from country to country until we settled in England in 2008, I think it’s important to make it known to people who may not be aware before it becomes a widespread issue.
The word Gypsy has been used since the beginning of our communities in the North of India, where majority of us originated. The word has been used to enslave the Rroma community until the late 1800’s, it was used during the Holocaust to justify the slaughter and eradication the Rroma community endured and wipe out our community.
Between 200,000-500,000 (the records unknown due to the disregard of Rroma life) Roma and Sinti people were murdered by Nazi’s in the 2nd World War. Roma and Sinti people were sent to ghettos, Auchwitz, Dachau and Brikenau, which has a specific “Gypsy Camp”, made specifically for the Roma and Sinti communities.
Romani is not Romany, Romany is not Sinti. Rroma is an Indo-Aryan ethnic group that has a closed language. We wish that for the purpose of fanfiction, you do not attempt to learn that language as it is closed. The language has saved the lives of millions of Rroma through the years - being a symbol of our strength and integrity. If something were to happen to our community again, we would rely on our language to keep us safe once again.
Having Romani, Romany, Sinti or any other Rroma connection does NOT make you ethnically Rroma. Having Great-great grandparent connections to Rroma does not make you Rroma, for you will not be persecuted for living in a Vardo, nor will you be persecuted for the label on your birth certificate.
We want you to celebrate our culture, when you are invited. We want you to celebrate our dished and clothing, when you are invited. If you have a Rroma friend, you will more than likely understand a few basic words of our language.
In fan-fiction, it is expected to see the word Gypsy be used sparsely, giving context to the time period and the lack of regard for our community, despite the hardships. However, we ask you do not use it in reference to us or our people, fiction or not. We ask that when you talk about the Shelby’s as people, you refer to them as Romani, not as Gypsy.
We ask that you do not call yourself Gypsy in your usernames, for that is disregard to our culture and our people. We ask that you do not refer to yourself as a Gypsy in context of you like a person of Rroma descent.
We ask so little, but these changes can change the future of so many Rroma people. It can change the future of my grand-children’s lives, my children’s lives. If we understand now why Rroma are important, why we aren’t thieves, job stealers and lazy, we’ll make a change to the future and what may happen next.
Rroma has had so little rest, and we are still in a constant battle with the engrained systems that disallow us to do certain activities and events due to our heritage.
As authors on this app, we ask YOU to be the first to make that change.
Of course, any reblogs etc are appreciated, or if you choose to illiterate this piece into something else to spread to your friends on this app, we will also be entirely grateful. If the message is spread, maybe the next generation of will not have to be told the message at all.
All my blessings to anyone who has read this. Nais nais tuke <3

My family have been tarot readers for generations, and a fair few of us have been great amongst our countries peers. I should have been gifted my first deck by another tarot reader in the family. But that wasn’t possible.
My mother never really got tarot, never really cared that much for the legacy of the Romany women before us, but when she found out I was she tried her best and bought me a deck and some guides.
I may not have had it the same as everyone that came before me, but I shall still try to do my family proud

As someone who has a number of Romani students, it's really fucked up to me how damn-near impossible it is to find Romani characters in American (and, to be fair, other countries) media that don't fall into one or more of the following stereotypes:
1. A witch or someone with magical/supernatural powers
2. A thief or criminal
3. A circus performer or fortune teller
4. A sexy "free spirit" who acts as inspiration/liberation for the protagonist (basically an ethnic version of the manic pixie dream girl/boy)
Obviously there are some real life Romani people who fall into those categories (the non-supernatural ones, at least). Especially when it comes to entertainment, that's a traditional profession for many Romani. But Romani people are also just people. When was the last time you saw a Romani character who was just a mundane, everyday person? A school kid, shop clerk, nurse, businessman, political activist, someone hanging out with a group of friends, or waiting for the bus, and who didn't come off as another genre element in a fantasy story?
The way they're written, you could replace them with elves and it would change nothing.

My white suburban ass played a "Gypsy" in a LARP before people (including myself) realized that was problematic and the name of the people was changed to "Selunari" (in like 2016 or something).
The "Vistani" in Curse of Strahd seem to suffer from the same vague cover-up nomenclature. They were also referred to as "gypsies" in earlier editions, and I doubt much else about them has changed.
I really loved my LARP-Gypsy character and wanted to redesign her in a way that would be more respectful and representative of the culture her fantasy people were based upon. I got as far as picking up some books, but I was already on my way out of that game (for unrelated reasons). A lot of other things were going on at the time, and my ability to focus was critically lacking. I didn't even get as far as the first page.
Now that I'm planning a CoS campaign, though, I have a new opportunity to dote on them.
I'm nervous. It feels like returning to a home I don't actually belong in.
Here are a few titles that have been haunting my bookshelf for the past decade:
The Gypsies by Angus Fraser (a history)
The Gypsies by Jan Yoors (a memoir)
English Gypsy Language: Word Book of the Romany by G. Borrow
Gypsy Witchcraft & Magic by Raymond Buckland ("a half-blood Romany")
Bonus: This little newspaper clipping was tucked in the front cover of the Angus Fraser book

If you have any other recommendations for material on the Romany people irl or insights on the CoS Vistani in particular, let me know! I want to do so good for them. ♡

WE WILL NOT BE SILENCED.
A 16 year old Roma boy was shot in the head over a $20 gas bill by Greek police officers. The teenager filled up his vehicle with $20 (£17) of petrol and then left. CCTV released on Tuesday revealed that four policemen were inside the petrol station at the time.
The officer fired two shots at the 16-year-old Roma boy in the second biggest city Thessaloniki.
According to the Council of Europe, the Roma (Gypsies) are Greece's biggest minority and number some 270,000, mostly living in makeshift accommodation.
HE IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION.
THE VIOLENCE NEEDS TO STOP.
