what i like about syril’s character so much in andor (although i can’t stand the dickbag, his arc and development are so interesting to me) is that in a million other movies, shows and contexts he would be a textbook hero. he’s dedicated to the rules and laws but his greedy boss tells him to cover up a murder that he solves and then he’s humiliated and forced to resign. his obsessive hunt for the escaped murderer even after being “kicked off the force” so to speak is something that has spawned a million action heroes. his actions towards dedra are the types of unhinged bs from y2k romcoms where the guy shows up and professes love seeing himself as romeo outside juliet’s balcony but dedra is (reasonably) unnerved and like, “why the fuck are you outside my workplace? i barely know you!”
he sees himself as the john mcclane of star wars: dedra as his love interest, cassian as an amoral crook who destroyed his life and got away, the rebellion as terrorists and thieves. but the reality when given context from the outside is that he’s a fascist, egomaniac and a clear cut villain. no grey area needed; the grey morality is reserved for the heroes in this show.
if andor were in syril’s pov it would be a standard action movie of a rogue cop seeking justice and getting the girl. but it’s not one of those and he’s not who he thinks he is. this show really pulls zero punches in any arena but i feel like we’re kind of sleeping on how it decimates the hero cop narratives i grew up with by making the biggest piece of shit in the show a textbook bruce willis character in a popped collar and clip on tie. the rules and laws and his vision of justice are the empire; the government is crooked as fuck. cassian killed those guys, yes, but he and the rebels need compassion not a lynching. in the first episode i was confused because i knew syril was a slimeball but his boss ordered him to cover up a murder and he refused to do so, which, in addition to his dedication to the law despite resorting to working outside of it, is so frequently the trope of an action hero that i was unsure if he was supposed to be good or bad. even his lingering obsession with bringing andor to justice and clearing his name is something i’ve almost always seen portrayed in media as admirable. but it’s not. not in the star wars universe nor in ours.
i love this show but especially the lack of restraint it has for spitting right in the face of the formulaic rogue cop action hero that has permeated pop culture for decades. like damn. fuck it up, andor writers, i’m loving this.

“He’d kill us if he got the chance.” Those words, spoken by a bespectacled, beige-suited young man (Frederic Forrest) as he wanders through Union Square in San Francisco with his lover (Cindy Williams), are secretly recorded by the surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) in The Conversation (1974). Their meaning, mulled over at length, becomes vital in unlocking the story’s mysteries. One of the key thrillers of its decade, Francis Ford Coppola’s film was also an eloquent expression of paranoia in a country reeling from Watergate.
Forrest, who has died aged 86, was the ideal actor to throw certainties into doubt. In The Conversation, he is bookish, furtive and opaque. The audience never becomes properly acquainted with him, though recordings of his voice and image are repeatedly offered up for our scrutiny so that the act of studying his expressions and intonations becomes central to experiencing the film. Without realising it, we channel a good deal of energy into deciphering his motives.
If we are never quite successful, that may explain why Forrest did not become the star that some predicted he would. He was a consummate character actor, too complex and mutable to be limited to any persona. This seemed to be a source of mild frustration to him. “I would like not to have to fit into somebody else’s story and have my scenes cut because I’m too strong,” he said in 1979.
It was in that year that he was seen in the two films which brought him closest to stardom. Working again with Coppola on the Vietnam war epic Apocalypse Now, based on Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Forrest played Chef, member of a platoon led by Willard (Martin Sheen), which ventures into Cambodia to kill the wayward Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando).
Forrest’s role here was nothing like his one in The Conversation, demanding instead a raucous, baffled bluster which is seen most demonstrably when he suffers a breakdown after a nocturnal encounter with a tiger. His wide, startled eyes, soup-strainer moustache and floppy hat with its upturned brim lent him a goofy, knockabout air. Even amid the film’s widespread carnage, his grisly eventual demise was strongly felt.
Also in 1979, he starred in The Rose, directed by Mark Rydell, whom he credited with teaching him how to “personalise” his acting through looseness and spontaneity. Bette Midler played a hard-living rock star based on Janis Joplin; Forrest was the sunny-eyed, straight-shooting Texan chauffeur with whom she connects emotionally and romantically. He received an Oscar nomination for the performance.
Coppola used him in two further projects. He was cast – or, arguably, miscast – as the dreamy romantic lead, a mechanic at the Reality Wrecking Company, in the ill-starred musical One from the Heart (1981). The movie was shot at crippling expense on glitzy sets designed to evoke a garish, heightened Las Vegas. He also played an automobile engineer in Coppola’s Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988).
He was at his most winning in Martha Coolidge’s intelligent teen romcom Valley Girl (1983), in which he was the adorably laidback manager of a health food restaurant whose daughter (Deborah Foreman) is dating a Hollywood punk, played by Nicolas Cage. That young actor, who happened to be Coppola’s nephew, may have stolen the show, but seeing the two men together made it feel as if Forrest was passing on the mantle of risk-taker to a new generation.
Born in Waxahachie, Texas, he was the son of Virginia (nee McSpadden) and Frederic, who ran a furniture business and owned greenhouses from which he sold plants to local shops. Frederic junior was educated at Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth. His acting ambitions led him to New York, where he studied under Sanford Meisner. After a stint in the army, he made his stage debut in the off-Broadway show Viet Rock in 1966, then had small parts in both the 1968 stage version and 1969 film adaptation of Futz, a comedy about a farmer in love with a pig.
His first major screen roles were in When the Legends Die (1972), in which he starred as an 18-year-old Native American rodeo rider – though Forrest was 36 at the time – who is mentored by a seasoned veteran (Richard Widmark); and the crime drama The Don is Dead (1973). He played the title role in Larry (1974), the factually based story of a man wrongly admitted to a psychiatric institution for 26 years.
He also appeared in The Missouri Breaks (1976), a western with Brando and Jack Nicholson, and played Lee Harvey Oswald on television in Ruby and Oswald (1978). He was twice cast as the novelist Dashiell Hammett, first in Wim Wenders’s wryly speculative Hammett (1982), which proposed that the writer was caught up in a real-life mystery that inspired him to pen The Maltese Falcon, and later in the TV movie Citizen Cohn (1992), where he suavely resists the efforts of the virulent lawyer Roy Cohn (James Woods) to intimidate him into naming names during the anti-Communist witchhunts.
Other films include Abel Ferrara’s Elmore Leonard adaptation Cat Chaser, Costa-Gavras’s war-crimes drama Music Box (both 1989), the tardy Chinatown sequel The Two Jakes (1990), directed by Nicholson, and Trauma, a rare US excursion for the Italian horror maestro Dario Argento. In the thriller Falling Down (also 1993), Forrest had a scene-stealing turn as a cartoonishly villainous racist in a Los Angeles military surplus store.
On television, he starred in Stephen Frears’s Saigon: Year of the Cat (1983), written by David Hare, and was part of the sprawling ensemble in the acclaimed western Lonesome Dove (1989). In the BBC2 series Die Kinder (1990), he played a private detective hired by a woman (Miranda Richardson) whose children have been kidnapped by their father. John Frankenheimer directed him in the US civil war drama Andersonville (1996).
He also starred in The Brave, the only film to be directed by Johnny Depp, and Wenders’s The End of Violence (both 1997). His final appearance was alongside Sean Penn and Jude Law in All the King’s Men (2006), a political drama adapted from the Robert Penn Warren novel previously filmed in 1949.
His two marriages, to Nancy Ann Whitaker (1960 to 1963) and the actor Marilu Henner (1980 to 1983) both ended in divorce.

Currently watching - July
Because I love a good little list 😊
Regularly updated during the month - colored = finished
KinnPorsche (14/14)
Mafia meets Crime meets Thriller meets RomCom meets Drama meets College-BL and a bloody huge pile of drivel about trust and than breaking said trust. And yes still obsessing over it. What are we all going to do when the series is over? (Well, for me see below)
10 out of 10 guns
Love Mechanics (8/10)
My new obsession. I can feel my thoughts becoming more and more taken up with Vee and Mark and if anyone hurts Mark, I crawl into my screen and hurt that person. It is a college-BL, but with a tougher story (cheating) and a lot of pain and angst and a perfect War for those scenes. He’s doing so well!
My secret love (9/12)
A sweet college-BL with a little bit of cringe about a forced BL-couple. Can something serious grow out of such a farce? Oh and we have a secret established couple who is dealing with their own problems.
Star and Sky: Sky in your heart (8/8)
A grown-up BL in the mountains about a sweet and cute teacher and an outwardly arrogant but warm-hearted doctor with a lot of heart eyes and second-hand embarrassment (at least for me).
7 out of 10 crowns
Old Fashion Cupcake (5/5)
So good!!! Watch it!!! It is everything! A work BL about a boss and his subordinate who helps the older one to find fun in life again with a lot of sweets! It is a short series with only five episodes – give it a try!
10 out of 10 desserts
Senpai, Danjite Koidewa! (6/8)
Another little gem from Japan about love in the workplace. Also very cute and fun to watch.
DNA says love you (12/12)
What a beautiful story! I love everyone's journey to finally find their true self, to finally have the courage to be honest with others and with themselfes. Highly recommend to watch this (have some tissues ready).
10 out of 10 destinies
Vice Versa (3/12)
Different parallel universe? Jimmy in suspenders? Count me in. Interesting color concept. I like the dynamic of the characters.
Coffee Melody (2/10)
It is almost as sweet as my coffee in the mornings, almost a little bit too sweet, but I like that they flirt openly with each other.
Check Out (8/12)
I'd like to slap Nine through the screen every episode and the screenwriters too. But at this point just a comedy for me. I don't take it seriously and have a blast with every messy scene they thought it should be in this...
Unforgotten Night (6/12)
Hell yeah! And with hell I literally mean hell! This is a very special series whose depiction of a whip-wielding “dom” will never leave my memory. If you like trash, go for it!
Mama Gogo (2/10)
There are too many series on the side to satisfy my need for second-hand embarrassment that I've neglected Mama Gogo a bit. There are sexy dancing men...so I will definitely keep watching.
Dark Blue and Moonlight (5/12)
Still on episode 3…is this a sign? Perhaps, perhaps not. I don’t have a problem with cheating in shows, but this is something else…and I am on episode 3!
That’s my candy (6/6)
I DID IT!!!! I finished this...well I finished it. I think it was aweful. Perhaps I didn't understand it? I don't know. I couldn't find the story, I always got confused with the time and if it was a dream or reality or part of the filming, and the chatacters weren't likable and hadn't any chemistry. If you like it, good for you ️ this is just my personal opinion.
2 out of 10 candy
Minato Shouji Coin Laundry (5/12)
The story of a coin laundry owner becoming friends with a high-school student and we have to wait where this is going. Well acted and kind of cute so far.
I promised you the moon (1/5)
I am really angsty about this. Who knows when and if I find the courage to watch the next episode...
Triage (13/13)
First I thought, well another hospital series, but it is so much more! Thriller meets science fiction/mystery meets romance. It was so good! Angsty and fluffy and tense and with a lot of twists and turns and it was never boring! Highly recommended!
10 out of 10 time loops
Because of you (10/10)
Not what I expected 😅 and not mad about it! Just three brothers and their journey to finally accept love and to be loved, I guess?
7,5 out of 10 Yuan Juns
He She It (3/3)
Interesting idea. You need to watch all three episodes to get the whole picture.
7,5 out of 10 plot twists
Something crunchy, crunchy
That was something else! But I loved the idea and the execution. There is a lot of singing and they can sing (at least in my opinion). It was really interesting.
9 out of 10 snacks
Smoke
That was harsh and brutal for my emotions.
7 out of 10 cigarettes
Boy meets boy
Couldn't warm up to the story, or rather to its execution. Not bad, but just not my cup of tea.
6 out of 10 baseball caps
Love Class (6/6)
Well, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I think Namjun crossed the line many times which really got on my nerves. The story felt a little bit rushed in the end, but it only had six episodes so they needed to deal with that, I guess. And I guess they wanted to tell too much in this short amount of time and scratched just the surface of everything...
7 out of 10 lines crossed
Rainbow Lagoon (2/2)
A very short, but sweet bl far away the big city with an enemies to friends to lovers trope. It handles the topics quite well for the short amount of time and feels kind of realistic doing so. What I like is, that it doesn't try to be something different than it is, which is part of its charm. It is free on Youtube so give it a try.
8 out of 10 pedal boat rides
History 1: My hero
I do like the ending. Kind of missed the grieving. But Aaron Lai is in it and is doing a good job.
6,5 out of 10 journals
History 1: Stay away from me
The best one out of the first series in my opinion. The story was cute (I don't have a problem with the step brother trope) and the chemistry was there. I really had a good time.
8 out of ten pots
History 1: Obsessed
Well I am not obsessed with this one. Some parts were hard to watch. I really disliked Jiang Jin Teng. The whole dynamic was toxic af and I it is just a meh from me.
5 out of 10 destroyed futures
Meet me outside
This was sweet...sometimes a little bit too sweet, but that is just my problem right now. It was quite a good and short watch. At times I thought Dale was a little bit too hasty.
7 out of 10 wine bottles
The Four Vampires
Just a short movie about four vampires and their struggle with not being able to end their existence.
7,5 out of 10 fangs
Hurt
A short film about doing something terrible and have to deal with the consequences, but also about the meaning of love and commitment.
9 out of 10 tears
Secret roommate
And another short film this time about a couple which has to pretend to be just rommates. Entertaining and quite cute.
7,5 out of 10 toothbrushes
Sotus (15/15)
Well, I guess I needed a good old college bl with a good old cold male lead. Really liked it. Got a little bit annoyed by Kong, but it was still tolerable.
8 out of 10 omlettes
What I'm looking forward to in July:
Oh! My sunshine nights (4th July)

It’s a Summer Film! (2021)
In keeping with our tradition of having now watched multiple Director Byakuya movies, last month I mentioned that we were planning to watch It’s a Summer Film! because it was impossible for me to read the synopsis as anything but a Director Rukia Movie:
"Let's make a movie together!" A girl passionate about samurai films and a boy full of mystery make a film together that transcends time and space.
Tumblr media
And omg, it was so delightful!!! It’s about a girl who lost the Film Club’s summer film bid to another girl (whom she then declares her Arch Nemesis) because no one was interested in the weirdo movie she wanted to make, so she sets off to make her own by herself.
Well, with her two friends, Tatsuki and Orihime! Tatsuki is in the kendo club and Orihime is in the Space Club!
Tumblr media
Their dynamic is so excellent, and I love that they remain such an important part of the film, even after Renji also comes into the picture. Here’s Rukia (armed with an umbrella) sparring with Tatsuki at their VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER:
Tumblr media
Rukia, who is also an enthusiastic artíste in this film, has a very specific idea of the kind of boy she wants as the star of her film:
Tumblr media
So when she finally finds him, she gets dead-set on having Renji in her film. Rukia even follows Renji after he jumps off a bridge into a river, which is a clear AU reinvention of the Memories of Nobody bridge exit!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also invites him back to the van down by the river:
Tumblr media
But there’s something you should know about Renji...
He is from another dimension. A different temporal dimension, to be specific, and the reason he is so afraid to engage with Rukia--DESPITE THE FACT THAT SHE IS THE VERY PERSON HE CAME TO THIS TIMELINE TO WITNESS--is because he’s afraid that interacting with her too much will rend space-time and punch a hole in the universe.
Which would be. Non-ideal.
In the course of filming, he is compelled to admit this, which, as usually happens when you announce to all of your new friends that you are a time traveler from the future, spurs a chalk talk, which has less to do with dealing with the fact that their classmate is a time-traveler from the future and more to do with making sure the math checks out:
Tumblr media
Luckily, Orihime did the math, and she assures everyone that, at least for now, the time paradox is static and all is well.
Tumblr media
Universe-rending potential on the backburner, you know what that means?
It means it’s time to make a fucking movie.
Two movies, actually--the romcom the Film Club was officially making, and the samurai movie no one but Rukia wanted. Though the two films are initially set up to be rival projects, with Rukia taking the Not Like Other Girls stance, her rival is actually super, super nice (and has no idea they are at war with one another), and instead of fighting a bitter battle to the death, they help each other work towards their joint premiere.
These movies are low-budget, MacGuyver-level productions of of love, of friendship, of summer excursions to shoot on location. Most importantly, it is about the power of storytelling. <333
(Because you know why Renji broke the laws of space-time to come find Rukia in the first place? The future doesn’t make movies anymore, and she was one of the last greats. He fell in love with her movies.)
Tumblr media
But sometimes a story can be too powerful. As Rukia struggles to complete her film--changing the ending over and over again, refusing to end it, refusing to end it in the way it seems destined to end--it becomes clear that sometimes, whatever your opinions of fate or destiny or that which has been scripted, you need to let go of the things you love most.
Tumblr media
You lose them to save them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10/10, EXTREMELY EXCELLENT MOVIE. STRONG RECOMMEND.
All of the characters are absolutely top-tier, from the mains all the way down to the most random person Rukia recruited off the street to do high-level movie jobs for her. It’s quirky, it’s funny, and combines the best of both words in its meta “a movie about making a movie” + SURPRISE TIME TRAVEL SCIFI splendor.
Good job Rukia!!! You did amazing. ToT
Director Renji agrees:

Ares x goddess!Reader Part Two:
past!thanatos x reader
As you looked down at the casualties of your city, you sign yet again. “I suppose I haven’t been the best partner these past decades.” You uttered to yourself as you dramatically sat down on the temple, your legs dangling.
Your skin raises as a familiar coldness enshrouds you. Your body’s discards it and goes back to its regular temperature. You smile gently but don’t turn back. “Hello Thanatos.”
“Hello (Y/N), it’s been awhile.” The God of Death looked around. “I certainly didn’t expect the city of refugees to look like this,” he glanced at you, “nor expected it to survive.”
“I have to have tricks up my sleeve every now and then. You know me.”
“Knew.”
You didn’t dare flinch at the words. “Well, thank you for doing your job I suppose.”
“It’s the same old thing. Somebody has to.” Thanatos breathed in as he felt each soul descending with his presence. He had other places to be like always, but he did quite miss his time with you.
“It’s quite ironic isn’t it (Y/N)?”
“Don’t you dare finish whatever you are going to say.” You internally seethed as the hypocrisy that you were slowly becoming aware to.
“I’ll say this, I miss you.” He came up behind and his hand lingered on your shoulder. Thanatos felt a tinge of pain hit his heart when you shrugged him off. “However, I know you’re very much in love with him despite this difficult time. Don’t make the same mistake I made with you.”
You winced at those words. You couldn’t handle losing Ares too. He made you feel a different type of way than anyone else ever could. He had a part of you and you him. You looked over your people and saw them handling themselves.
You needn’t hold their hand for everything. You were a Goddess, not a babysitter. For the most part they took care of themselves so why were you wasting your time with them instead of your supposed husband?
The intense feeling of guilt pooled at your stomach. Your dear Ares must feel so neglected. You rubbed your temples again and sighed loudly.
“Thank y-“ As you turned, your old dear friend was already gone. He had done his job and left. “Well, time to find my beloved.”
________________________________
You stood before your grand shared home. People see Ares as prideful and arrogant, so you would assume the house would be large and grand. On the outside it was with its beautiful marble stature and complimenting staircase to the door.
Yet it was just a mini mansion you two enjoyed. Not as big as the other Gods homes. Ares likes a smaller space that has enough for his foolery. You smiled softly as you thought about how he crashed through the second story trying to prove a pint.
You entered and took a big whiff comfort and warmth. ‘It’s been awhile hasn’t it,’ you smiled bitterly to yourself. You looked around and giggled at the paintings, sculptures, and pictures of you and your dear husband. Such happy simple times. When did you become distant?
Your hands clasped each other’s tightly. You knew he was home, and you knew he knew you were home. “My sweet husband, your darling wife is home!” You called out the old saying you would say every time you came home. When he would come home he would say, “My darling wife, your sweet husband is home!”
Ares was still upset about the whole ordeal, but he would never deny you of your kiss of life and love and tight hug or protection. Or so you would call it. Thinking about it made his heart flutter. He finally walked down to you, and felt all those emotions from he first saw your beauty.
His breath got caught in his throat, his stomach was doing cartwheels, he’s sure he was having heart palpitations. Oh dear, you took his breath away. You were as gorgeous as the first day he met you. You didn’t change one bit.
Ares glided to you and hugged you tightly, dipping you like in those cheesy romcom moments and kissed you passionately. He carefully stood you both whilst your lips danced together. He didn’t want to pull away, but you did first; almost making him whine. Then he saw your eyes that held the sky and universe together.
“As beautiful as ever.” Ares breathed out.
You flushed slightly, “you’re just as charming.”
You couldn’t help but feel giddy being in his arms. His beautiful sunset orange eyes held so much passion and love for you that you felt exposed under it. A certain emotional vulnerability was being shown and felt that you hadn’t experienced in awhile. You did miss your husband during those years after all.
You laid your head on your chest. “I’ve missed you so much, even if I didn’t show it. Carry me to the couch? Somebody wore me out today.”
Ares chuckled as he lifted you with ease just like your wedding day. “Oh did they? Do I have to go and fight them for challenging my lady?”
You playfully swooned at his words and your fingers danced on his face. “You would do that for me?” You batted your eyes up at him innocently.
He carefully sat himself on the couch and adjusted your position to be gently laying on him. “I would do anything for my beautiful wife, anyone who dares strife with her shall have a problem with me.” He started twirling/twisting your hair with his fingers.
“How romantic!” You cheerfully giggled. You let yourself get comfortable and sighed on his chest. “However my dear, you need not strife with such a person. I handled it, you know me.”
“Ah of course of course, you are more than capable of taking yourself. I know.” Ares looked down at you with love. The feelings of bitterness and anger disappeared as you two chatted as if nothing happened. As if he wasn’t the one to fight you.
As looked upon him with the same passion in your orbs, you knew that at some point the discussion had to be talked about. You gently rested your hand on his chest as you cuddled deeper into his arms. “Ares...”
“(Y/N)...”
As stubborn as ever. “I-“ you shoved your face into his chest. “I’m sorry.” Your voice was muffled.
“What was that?”
“I’m. Sorry.”
“A little louder.”
“I’m sorry!”
“For what?”
“Ares...”
“What?”
“I’m sorry for, being an uncaring spouse. I didn’t realize how long the time had passed, and I didn’t consider your feelings. I’m really sorry, I didn’t realize how much we had drifted. I still really and care for you, please remember that. And i should’ve-“
Ares shushed you and gently patted your back. “You and your communication skills.”
Although you had no room to pout, you still did. “You’re not the one to talk.”
“Maybe so, but even then. It’s okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“We had our fight. Now we are here together.”
“I suppose so.”
“Should we go to my mother for counseling?”
You snorted loudly. “Please.”
“You’re right. We can work it out together.”
Comfortable silence ensued. The both of you reminiscing of old times, how it use to be. When he was your mighty God of War and you were his healing Goddess of Peace. Two peas in pod with delightful season of chaos.
“I really do love you. I promise, from here on out, we will spend more time together.”
“That’s all I ever wanted. I’ve missed you so much.” His arms squeezed you lightly and he buried his nose into your hair. “I’ve missed this.”
You choked back tears. “Oh by the stars, I love you so much.”
Ares hushed you with a soft kiss sealing your fate with him once more.
Two beautiful powerful Gods in love.

Are there couples like dair that you know of?
Do you mean in real life? Because that’s classified. Also, not really. That kind of insanity only exists in fiction.
Fictionally though…I can think of many. I think that’s why my affection for dair is so enduring, it ticks so many of my ship boxes for me, so let’s dive in, on a tour of liz’s fave romantic ships
Let’s start with the classics.
The original romcom couple: beatrice x benedick of shakespeare’s much ado about nothing. They have everything: eviscerating banter, guy being an absolute simp for his beloved. Nads has written about it before.
And of course, the austenites: Darcy x Lizzie and Knightley x Emma are big ones, and I think there’s definite vibes with Wentworth x Anne too.
the Blueprints are When Harry Met Sally and Summer x Seth (and tbh you could probs throw Holly Golightly and Paul Varjak and Tracy Lord and Mike Connor — I would have picked jimmy stewart tbh. rip to katharine hepburn but I’m different. )
Sidebar: Oh but you know who knows SO much about Philadelphia Story and all romcomedy bc they’ve written academically on the subject? tumblr user scabopolis!—somewhere, mayhaps a fic comment?—they told me that that script was written with the intention of the ending being punitive for the heroine. if hepburn and the writer weren’t combating early 20th century misogyny, would the play and subsequent film come to a different conclusion???
As mentioned here: kate x anthony from bridgerton have a multitude of parallels. absolutely dair coded.
And I mean…I already made this post about the parallels with Japril but REALLY: the different backgrounds—one rich one middle class; workplace romance; adversaries to best friends to lovers; shared trauma through the loss of a child; RUNAWAY BRIDE; mutual pining; backdoor endgame which I know the gg revival will not give me but a girl can dream
Nads and I have discussed at length how dair coded the Emily Henry couples Gus x January & Charlie x Nora are. And Henry’s talked about how inspired all her work is by Nora Ephron, so. Mutual blueprints (Poppy x Alex have a best friends to lovers that is DELICIOUS but the characters themselves aren’t that similar to dan and blair on that level)
Speaking of mutual blueprints, the mindy project’s mindy x danny have a GREAT workplace enemies to lovers arc in the first couple seasons…the second half of the show roughens them up a bit. (and danny castellano is SUCH a different daniel than our girl dan humphrey)
And in the realm of “stop being so mean to me or I swear to god I’m gonna fall in love with you” allow me to talk a bit about one of my favorite ships of all time: luke and mara jade skywalker.
Okay so, in the extended star wars universe; in the novels that were written BEFORE the new trilogy (and before the prequel trilogy in some cases), these published fanfic pulp scifi books introduced this character, mara jade. She was the personal assassin and fixer for the emperor, and when he was killed, she was like “I have to get revenge” so of course she makes it her life mission to destory luke skywalker. And then of course they get thrown into a few impossible situations where they have to team up and she discovers that actually she doesn’t hate him which of course makes her furious, and then after a couple more teamups she realizes she likes him, how horrifying, then after luke convinces mara to train as a jedi in between smuggling deals she realizes she’s in LOVE with him?! while luke has been down bad since the first assassination attempt they are literally those posts that go “she thinks they’re sworn enemies but he is just some guy with a crush on her” and “she stops trying to kill him and honestly he’s a little disappointed. star wars sequels committed many sins but the original one was cutting out my girl mara jade skywalker.
I have discussed at length with S (and even written fic) on the dair-codedness of amy and jonah from superstore.
Speaking of S, she also made me watch Hart of Dixie and whilst the main couple zoe x wade have a chaotic adversarial romance that may speak to dair, the true dair of the show, the couple that came late in the game, but looking back seems like they should have belonged together all this time (I caught Vibes in s2 but that’s neither here nor there): ANNABETH X GEORGE! They have a long history of mutual disinterest/only tolerating each other for the sake of the mutual love of their life, Lemon, and then after a couple heartbreaks and a long winding road, they fall for each other! and Lemon is like the captain of their ship—it’s both Dair and the resolution the blair x serena x dan triangle deserved!
And in terms of childhood love vs the love you grow into have this whole fic verse that expands upon the dair & amy x laurie parallels

New Guardian article about AH: "What happens when your star is cancelled but you can’t cancel the film?"
Does Armie Hammer ever yearn for the time when the worst thing people said was that nobody liked him? “Ten Long Years of Trying to Make Armie Hammer Happen” was the cruel but incisive headline of a 5,000-word BuzzFeed article from 2017 which concluded that only a wealthy white man could not merely have withstood so much failure but have been rewarded for it. The US actor tweeted about the piece, calling it “bitter AF” before making a celeb’s exit from the social media platform: he deleted his account then quietly reactivated it.
Those must seem now like halcyon days. Hammer’s fall began a year ago when messages surfaced online, purportedly sent from him to various extramarital partners, suggesting an erotic interest in cannibalism. Sexual assault allegations were made by multiple women, while an accusation of rape prompted a Los Angeles police investigation. Hollywood tends to act fast when handling a scandal in the age of social media and #MeToo: Hammer was dropped immediately by his agents, William Morris Endeavor. He exited projects including the Jennifer Lopez romcom Shotgun Wedding, Amma Asante’s cold war thriller Billion Dollar Spy and The Offer, a 10-part series about the making of The Godfather. His scenes in Taika Waititi’s soccer comedy Next Goal Wins were reshot with Will Arnett taking his place.
It was too late, however, for Disney to excise him from its plush new version of the Agatha Christie whodunnit Death on the Nile. Shot before the pandemic, the film has remained moored, if not quite dead in the water. Its prospects were not enhanced by controversy surrounding another cast member, the Black Panther star Letitia Wright, who recently retweeted an anti-vaccine video that was described as “hot garbage” by her fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe alumnus Don Cheadle.
(,,,)
The question of how far such controversy reaches is moot: bad publicity of any sort is too great a risk. Even so, there may be good news for Disney from a business perspective with Death on the Nile. The picture was greenlit while Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express (which featured Depp among its cast) was on its way to a worldwide gross of $352m (£258m). As in the case of that 2017 whodunit, it is surely the combination of Branagh, Christie, a starry ensemble and a glossy, old-fashioned style of cinema – rather than any one performer – that will motivate the valuable older demographic to see the movie. One of the benefits of star-studded casts is that there is bound to be something for everyone. It’s like any half-decent biscuit tin: who cares if one or two are broken?
No one would pretend that the allegations against Armie Hammer aren’t serious. But in terms of audience recognition, prestige and prizes, he is no Kevin Spacey. Beyond journalism and social media, it may be the case that older audiences don’t even know who he is, let alone what he is alleged to have done. Of course, wariness about returning to cinemas tends to be higher among that same demographic, which means that the release of Death on the Nile will not be plain sailing. If the movie does run aground, it might be one thing that can’t be blamed solely on this Hammer horror.
TLDR: Disney didn't have much choice so the show must go on but the success of this film isn't gonna be based on the presence of Armie Hammer.

Picture this: a romcom featuring two gyms at war but having to disband their war so they can take down a corporate run and owned gym moving in on their territory.
Starring John [Cho] and Don [Lee] playing cousins and owners of one gym.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also starring Ming Na Wen playing the the owner of another gym.
Tumblr media
The three used to be close, but when Ming Na and John’s characters started dating and then John’s character broke her heart by cheating on her, Ming Na’s character stopped hanging out with the two cousins (which broke Don’s character’s heart because she was his best friend and he’d been in love with her since forever, but like a noble idiot he stepped back when his cousin started dating her).
Present day the two gyms got word of a third gym opening up near them
[run by a character played by Keanu Reeves... because it’s Keanu Reeves]
Tumblr media
So the two older gyms decide to team up together to take down the new gym.
Along the way, Ming Na’s character bonds with Don’s character and fall in love.
Bonus [because I’m selfishly missing Selfie] John’s character is married to Karen Gillian’s character and Karen’s character is actually friends with Ming Na’s character despite her husband’s past and is trying to goad her husband to play cupid with her because she ships Don and Ming Na.
Also featuring the following as various trainers/staff of the respective gyms that regardless of their bosses’ rivalry, they’re all good friends and are just as anxious to find a way to unite the two gyms [mainly some of them are tired of seeing their boss, Don’s character, pine helplessly for Ming Na’s character; and the other half want their boss happy after her late husband passed away a long time ago].
For the trainers/staff at John & Don’s gym:
Lee Si Young
Grace Park
Ok Taec Yeon
Steven Yeun
Jharrel Jerome
For the trainers/staff at Ming Na’s gym:
Olivia Munn
Emily Vancamp
Kiki Layne
Lana Condor
Charles Michael Davis
Hasan Minhaj
[so side note: I’d like to thank @giveamadeuschohisownmovie because I wouldn’t be brave enough to post this but I am constantly in awe of every hypothetical movie/show idea he comes up with and thus I am finally posting this idea after having sat in my drafts FOR NEARLY TWO YEARS. and even if it doesn’t get any attention, this is me putting out into the universe for MA DONG SEOK aka Don Lee to star in more movies.]

edgar and alan headcanons for @wat-the-cur ! (as usual this is in a universe where tlb don’t die and the frogs are redeemed :,)
they’re twins but alan is older by like an hour so naturally he’s always pulling the “respect your elders” card
they were born on february 29th aka leap year but they don’t tell anyone that because of the imminent “leap FROGS” jokes (which sam definitely makes when they tell him and they smack him for it)
alan loves horror movies of any kind. he likes the special effects/makeup a lot. he’s also a science fiction nerd for sure
he also likes engineering; he likes both the finiteness of math and machines and the ambiguity of space and fantasy. edgar though has trouble wrapping his head around things that are theoretical so he needs evidence and hands on work
alan’s music taste is made up of scifi/horror movie soundtracks and strange new wave but its actually kinda good
edgar’s music is um... not as good
edgar understands NO pop culture at all. when sam and alan go back and forth with their references it’s like they’re speaking in hieroglyphics and edgars like that pic of shadow going “what the FUCK are you two talking about”
he will watch star wars with sam and alan but only when forced, and he only learns one character’s name each time
when the three of them hang out they like people watching and pretending they’re spies or on a stakeout. they’ll make up bizarre backstories for strangers around them
sam also gets them into gossiping and judging people
edgar like. does not understand sarcasm. he’s a very straightforward person
both frogs’ beliefs and personalities in their childhood/young adulthood were really influenced by their frustration with their parents and repression of their sexuality so they kind of spewed whatever was said by the adults around them (ie truth justice and the american way)
they know they were pretty rude as a result of that when they met sam and they’re really apologetic for it when they get older
after the whole “vampires must die” debacle, they make sort of a truce to only hunt “bad guy monsters” just tolerate tlb. david specifically is on the thinnest ice (especially because he and edgar’s personalities clash)
like david, edgar secretly enjoys soap operas and cheesy romcoms and horse girl movies
edgar got ordained for two reasons only: 1) to officiate gay weddings and 2) to hunt monsters, in that order.
neither of them can cook. awful terrible cooks but in completely different ways. they also can’t dance not even a little bit
lucy thinks they’re a bit weird (especially when they talk in unison) but sweet
edgar does get gay married to blake post-the events of the thirst but it’s very ron swanson-esque in that it’s quick and not flashy and he officiates it himself. sam still cries though <3

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
There's No Place Like Home – Queliot, fake-dating post-mosaic
i'll put your poison in my veins – body swap fix-it fic
How to Make Two Stubborn Wizards Kiss – HP Drarry soulbond fic
The Only Exception (with the floppy hair) – Queliot soulmate fic
Quentin Coldwater and the Universal Truth (That a Slytherin as hot as Eliot Waugh would never be attracted to a Hufflepuff such as himself) – TM/HP/P&P Fusion.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yep. I enjoy it when authors respond to mine, so I reply to others. If the comment is just emojis or a few nice words, I may not respond, basically because I don’t expect responses on those when I leave them. I do appreciate anyone who leave a comment, from just one emoji to full capital keyboard smashes to long comments full of your favorite lines. Each one makes my day.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hrm. Typically I write fluff and happy endings, but a couple I did for exchanges ended pretty ambiguously – so probably either ashes in my mouth (TM, Niffin!Alice & Q) or baby did a bad bad thing (TM, Q23/Q40)
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve ever written?
I was going to say no, but yeah, I did a Magicians/Harry Potter/Pride & Prejudice fusion fic for my second fic ever. I guess that one was pretty crazy, trying to merge three universes. I’m pleased with how it came out; it was a lot of fun to write.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not to my face. So, nope.
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Yes. Typically M/M. I have a few F/F and one M/F.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. @hoko-onchi-writes and I have talked about it, and I think it’ll happen one day.
What’s your all time favorite ship?
Queliot, although these days I enjoy many ships – Jaskier/Geralt, Clint/Coulson, among others
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I don’t have any incomplete fics.
What are your writing strengths?
Finishing fics? Capturing a character’s personality through dialogue. I don’t know.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Brevity. In the exchanges I’ve done, I’ve had the highest word count fics in over half of them.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I haven’t done this. I’m fine with it, when I read it in other fics. I think I usually just say “He chants the Romanian words” or whatnot.
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?
The Magicians popped my fanfic cherry.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
I hate this question. I don’t know. I like them all; and my range of what I've written is pretty across the board. I guess here’s my top eight, in no particular order:
There’s No Place Like Home – fake-dating post-mosaic. This one felt like a romcom as I wrote it, which was partly why I enjoy it so much. I feel like the humor was pretty well done. Thanks to @freneticfloetry for the bunny.
Love Me To Life – Written for a fairy-tale exchange, based off the Pygmalion myth. The bunny for this one hit me while I was standing in line for Asian food, and it was just a delight to watch it come to life. I figured out various plot points along the way, and it just fills me with delight to reread it.
i’ll put your poison in my veins – my first real fix-it. I was proud of myself for sticking with the teen rating, even though I really wanted to put some smut in the end. It just felt good to write a real fix it.
so hot, so sweet, so whet my appetite – my first OW. I Love these two so much; I’m expanding their universe into an original novel.
The Only Exception (with the floppy hair) – this flowed out of me in 3 days. I love the soulmate trope; it’s my favorite, and this was the first one I ever wrote. Thanks for the inspo, @freneticfloetry.
Professor Coldwater: Social Maladjustment 101 – Pretty sure I’d get murdered in my sleep if I didn’t include this one. My longest fic, my goal was to write angst and smut. And I did that.
you said the words, and they altered the universe – TM, book/show fusion. Sort of. I wrote this probably when I was at my height of loving Queliot and the TM fandom, and I think it shows. I was just so enamored of this fic as soon as I finished it. I still love it. Just not that intensely, I suppose.
if I get burned (at least we were electrified) – TM, Wickoff. I just enjoyed writing a fic from a song, and I like how I did it with the flashbacks.

Hiii this is very random but what are your favorite movies of all time??? Across all genres :) love youuuu x
oh helll yes !!!!!! thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about films. i fucking love it. i’m choosing to interpret favourites as in ... comfort movies, films i’ve seen 1000000x, films i can rewatch over and over. they’re not necessarily what i think to be the best movies of all time, just movies that mean a lot to me, that i can quote by heart, etc.
titanic: i hate to give james cameron rights but he wrote one HELL of a romance and i’ll fight anyone who complains its insta-love or not meaningful when they have such an incredible connection and its SO well written. always in my heart @ rose dawson fav female character ever!!
1917: i don’t want to talk about it but that’s emotional support wwi movie sir !!! my man george mackay did ALL OF THAT for 2h and got snubbed at every award show.... and people complained it was like watching a video game??? that movie is packed with SO MUCH character detail in such subtle performances i am obsessed with it. william schofield is IT re: traumatized repressed protags.
the social network: best divorce film of all time. fleabag voice: this is a love story. ahead of its time. visionary. andrew garfield DID that!
pride: found family !!!!! solidarity !!!!!!!!  gay joy !!!! this movie is just IT. like yeah it’s rough and sad at times but it’s just so fucking delightful and comforting.
captain america: the winter soldier: character-driven action films are SO sexy !! fleabag voice: this is a love story. other mcu films wish. they fucking wish !!!! marvel never topped this and they never will. end of.
the departed: ok me simping for scorsese is very much my ‘straight male trait’ BUT the departed is one hell of a movie so i deserve a pass.
star wars: revenge of the sith: i accept zero criticism over this. any prequels haters, the door is right there. i do not want to hear it. we got shakespeare levels of tragedy and drama over here and i LIVE for it. anakin’s downfall is like.... the epicentre of the saga, it is EVERYTHING. and !!!!! rots has the best lightsaber duel in the entirety of the star wars universe. (an argument COULD be made for some clone wars duels like maul/ahsoka but........). i mean best friends turned enemies anakin and obi wan fight on a lava planet ????? A LAVA PLANET ???? while yelling at each other cos they are so mad that they can’t see eye to eye ????? it ends with anakin catching fire ??? and obi wan yelling ‘i loved you’ ?????? the theatrics. the drama. the betrayal. the music. the fact that the stunt coordinator whose third eye is wide wide open said it was designed like an argument between a husband and a wife. i mean, you’re gonna look me in the eye and tell me any of the rey and kyle ron’s lightsaber duels even come close to that???? pffff. p l e a s e. revenge of the sith is IT.
anastasia: 20th fox’s anastasia has like... zero historical facts and i love every second of it. it’s romantic as hell, has a better soundtrack than most disney films, has an iconic villain AND it’s actually quite touching. if we forget the fact that the romanovs were terrible people who made their whole country suffer terribly rip.
you’ve got mail: my fav romcom. enemies to lovers except its set in BOOKSHOPS and romanticises autumn ?? did they write this for me specifically?? also ft. america’s sweetheart tom hanks as the love interest??? and a leading lady obsessed with p&p ?? he brings her daisies when she’s sick after her store closes because he remembers they’re her favourite flowers :((((
the eagle of the ninth: don’t @ me it has scotland and homoeroticism and a stellar soundtrack. is the slave thing fishy? sure. is the attitude re: empires and stuff not great? sure. but i love it despite its flaws. fleabag voice: this is a love story. also a lot of the fics are chef’s kiss so. also not to be this person but jamie bell in this movie is so hot. i mean he’s so hot. his *** energy is off the charts.
dunkirk:  OH YOU KNOW. me, a war movie stan, a chris nolan stan & a harry styles stan: i’m gonna love this movie ??? a normal ??? amount???? narrator voice: she did not, in fact, love the movie a normal amount.
lotr: fellowship of the ring: i mean does it even need an explanation?? it’s fellowship. every second is perfect. yes, even the weird elrond transition while frodo is ill at rivendell. and my man boromir breaks my heart the whole time. the ULTIMATE comfort movie. just joy joy joy joy. i mean tremendous pain too lots of it is really sad, but joy. i’m due for a rewatch soon.
labyrinth: this movie is WEIRD in the best most fun way !!!! it has an amazing female empowerment finale AND david bowie being iconic looking like THAT the whole time ?? FAV.
mulan (1998): bi !!!!! rights !!!!!!! bi4bi jocks !!!! has the best disney song in ‘i’ll make a man out of you’. no i don’t accept constructive criticism.
pride and prejudice (2005): does it need saying??? hand flex! proposal in the rain !! keira knightley looking like that !!
i mean there’s a lot more lbr but that’s all i can think of rn lol
