Book Blurb:
The newest mystery from the author One of Us Is Lying, the Queen of thrillers, Karen M. McManus! When mother-daughter grifters set out on their final job, the heist gets deadly and dangerously personal.
For all of Kat’s life, it’s just been her and her mother, Jamie—except for the forty-eight hours when Jamie was married and Kat had a stepbrother, Liam. That all ended in an epic divorce, and Kat and Liam haven’t spoken since.
Now Jamie is a jewel thief trying to go straight, but she has one last job—at billionaire Ross Sutherland’s birthday party. And Kat has figured out a way to tag along. What Kat doesn’t know, though, is that there are two surprise guests at the dazzling Sutherland compound that weekend. The last two people she wants to run into. Liam and his father—a serial scammer who has his sights set on Ross Sutherland’s youngest daughter.
Kat and Liam are on a collision course to disaster, and when a Sutherland dies, they realize they might actually be in the killer’s crosshairs themselves. Somehow Kat and Liam are the new targets, and they can’t trust anyone—except each other.
Or can they? Because if there’s one thing both Kat and Liam know, it’s how to lie. They learned from the best.
Review:
Two step siblings reunited when their perspective con artist parent ends up on the same job trying to steal from a wealthy family but when bodies start piling up on the job they'll have to find a way to save each other before it's too late. Kat is great at stealing, all her life it's just been her and her mother Jamie and her mentor Gem, working on cons yet when her mother is determined to go straight and do one final job, Kat decides to tag along.... and the last thing she expects is to rub into her stepbrother Liam and his scam artist father, Luke. Jamie and Luke were married for 48 hours until it ended in an epic divorce all those years ago and Kat and Liam have never met since. Yet now years later when Jaime is doing her final jewel thief job at billionaire Ross Sutherland's birthday, they run into Liam ad Luke... as Luke is a serial scammer who has set his sights on Sutherland's youngest daughter. And when Sutherland dies both Kat and Liam become the real killer's next target....and they'll have to work together to save each other, if only they could actually trust one another. They'll have to use everything they've ever learned from their con artist parents to survive... but they'll have to learn to trust one another despite it going against their nature. I have been a huge fan of Karen McManus books for so long and while this one wasn't one of my all time favorites from her it was an easy and fast read. I liked the sibling relationship between Kat and Liam and how despite not being around each other for years, their relationship was strong. The mystery had a ton of twists and turns with plenty of villains with different motives, and while the ending felt a bit abrupt and a little open ended, overall it's a propelling read. It wasn't what I was really expecting but it's a fun read featuring a gay guy, a bi guy, and a straight girl all working together to solve a murder mystery while being chased by a killer and dealing with their own respectively messed up family.

Oz S1 E8: A Game of Checkers Live Reaction and Thoughts. As always my thoughts are not very profound lol
OKAYYYY this is the riot episode lets gooo
You know what's interesting is that in most media they use chess as a metaphor for life/whatever, but in Oz they use checkers instead. And checkers is kinda like the dumb mans chess (easier, less moves) so lol
Schillinger getting bullied by the other prisoners and his own sons lmaooo okayyy
"you lose an eye, you get kicked in the balls, you get a face full of shit,,, you become a different man" 😭
The birth of crazy Beecher
McManus would not survive one day in Em city like let's be real...
All I see when I look at Whittlesey is Carmela Soprano who is very mother to me. Like I kindaaaa dgaf about her
McManus is saurrr annoying I hate his bald incel ass😭
Rebadow backstory UNLOCKED... the way he stabbed someone then went to back to reading his newspaper lol he's so real
Some Miguel x Father Mukada realness... like what if they hid in the pod during the riot and kissed heh heh...
and the riot has started! All the Co's are in their flop era😭😭
I bet this episode was fun to film lol
Interesting how none of the muslims have their kufis on
Glynn is wearing an ugly ass vest I never noticed this before lol
Miguel asking to watch over the hostages----Re: MiguelXMukada
The way Idgaf about that cello player dude
Tobias spinning around in the background and doing fuck all while everyone is trying to organize the riot lmao
Mukada's haircut is uggo...
Said is power drunk omggg someone punch him or something
The way Adebisi doesn't hide his infatuation with Ryan😭like can you stop being a perv for one second omfg
Scott Ross fighting Kenny is so ijbol. Like why are you beefing with a little boy plz be serious
Does anyone else think that Miguel has a weird accent lol. I can't explain it exactly but I think he purposefully exaggerates it
The riot def establishes who (for the remainder of the series (or for as long as the character lasts)) has morals and who does not
Scott Ross is like weirdly taller than everyone lmao I notice it in every scene he's in
McManus hallucinating every inmate that has died under his watch... like girl just WAIT😭😭 there's gonna be a lot more where that came from... and you will NOT give af😭
Can I admit that McamnusXSaid is kinda my Oz crackship😭Like there's something there I think idk. But also their beef as a couple would be INSANEEEE
How are some of the dudes watching tv... I swear they smashed it when the riot started lol
NARRRR Adebisi took his little hat off. Put it back on neowwwww
Said is literally so funny when he shouts like what his problem actually. He needs a xanax I think
Adebisi backstory UNLOCKED
the National Guard is coming... the riot is about to end
Schillinger hiding in his pod when the National Guard started smoking the place💀
Okay episode over. Makes sense why they used checkers instead of chess now. Bcuz that riot was the messiest and dumbest thing that I've ever seen. Also the inmates had very limited options/moves (like in checkers!).

Something I've been wondering since a lot of the older cats tend to get cast younger and younger recently - are there any performers you could plausibly see as "real" younger versions of those characters?
Anon, that is actually a super interesting question (and I hope I'm understanding what you're asking for; apologies if I misunderstood - if you are asking whether there are performers who have not played the role but played others and can get away with playing them, honestly I'm not a big proponent of having all super young swings and understudies, and I've spoken at length about that before), but there *are* actually a handful of performers of past (which means that they *were* young when they initially took the role and looked it) and present that I could feasibly see as younger (and by "younger" I mean like more in the 20s) faceclaims or "versions" of my beloved older cats (and that I often will note back too when I'm trying to picture them in my mind).
From what I have heard and seen of them, they also give off more of a younger vibe, either due to the lack of maturity in their voices, or their general dispositions, that I think works well as these characters but younger. Imagine a different bunch of teenagers and gapped teeth babies running around the Junkyard hollering at one another and whining at their parents before *they* became the parents, ahaha.
I can give you some of my favourites to avoid wasting too much space. I can do a Part 2 with Asparagus/Gus, Old D and Grizabella if you're interested:
Skimbleshanks:
Tumblr media
Matthew Gould (on his first go around; he aged into it much better the second go - Ross Finnie could technically also take this spot)
Tumblr media
Philip Bertioli (and this is a costume thing but his vest always looked too big for him which just amped up the baby vibe)
Tumblr media
Giovanni DiGabriele
Tumblr media
Hayden Baum (specifically his first go around - that is a baby)
Tumblr media
Tyler Keller (who looks *particularly* old photo like in this shot with the filter and expression - slap a black and white or sepia filter over that and tell me that's not an old photograph)
Tumblr media
Taylor Scanlan (also *very* baby and *very* pretty*).
(Others for consideration if these don't tickle your fancy: Sandy Rass, Sean McManus, Shaun Henson, Jon-Paul Christensen, Philip Comley, Dann Dunn, Brian O'Muiri, Billy Mahoney, Jarryd Nurden, Park Seong-ryong, Bryan Mottram
Jellylorum:
Tumblr media
Catrin Darnell
Tumblr media
Susan Powers
Tumblr media
Joanna Beck
Tumblr media
Lindsay Dyett
Tumblr media
Jeanne Montano
Tumblr media
Erin James
Tumblr media
Annemarie Rosano
(Others: Liz Izen, Louise Tomkins, Bonnie Simmons, Nina Hennessey, Marcy DeGonge, Jennifer Vaden, Thea MacNeil, Lisa-Marie Parker, Carrie Willis, Megan Arseneau, Taila Halford, and Alice Batt. S/O to Pia Douwes who toed the baby line, and nearly all Jellylorums in the Shiki production and a good chunk of the US Tour 5 who are and were - more often than not - quite young and look it)
Jennyanydots:
Tumblr media
Stephanie Johns
Tumblr media
Lisbeth Brittain
Tumblr media
Laura Darkins
Tumblr media
Lucinda Shaw
Tumblr media
Erica Leigh Hansen
Tumblr media
Ellie Nunan
(Others: Mary Trainor, Renée Knapp, Kati Farkas, Jennifer Cohen, Amanda Bay, Laura McCulloch, Melina Charles, Hanny Aden, Alice Redmond, Abigail Dever, Sarah-Marie Maxwell kinda sorta but tbh I think it's the makeup, Eloise Kropp, Maria Briggs - who is like elementary school Jenny -, Emily Jeanne Phillips, Ayumi Kato, and Megan Carton)

#OnThisDay April 8, 2003
“I Care 4 U” is released as a double A-side single with "Don't Worry" as the second US single from I Care 4 U, by Blackground Records and Universal Records.
According to Aaliyah, the song speaks about a female narrator who tells her male friend: "Don't cry, I'll wipe your tears. I love you, just give me the chance to show you.”
The song was originally recorded for Aaliyah's second studio album One in a Million (1996), but the recording was shelved. It was re-recorded in 2000 for her3rd and final album, Aaliyah (2001).
Ross Scarano from Complex praised the production of "I Care 4 U", comparing it to the work of Angie Stone. He stated: "If it weren't for some low-in-the-mix beatboxing and complicated drum programming, "I Care 4 U" wouldn't register as a Timbaland production. Luke McManus from the Irish publication RTÉ felt that Aaliyah showcased her voice more on the song and that her newfound vocal ability matched the "brilliance of the backing tracks"

Another year, another 110 books read! I don’t love organizing books by genre because I feel like so many of the books I read are a mix of fantasy/horror/queer romance/mystery/etc, but I like to see how it all falls into place. I had started 2022 with the goal of reading more poetry but otherwise had no specific goal except to read whatever I wanted. There were some disappointments, some books I have been meaning to read forever, some new favorites, and some comfortable rereads of old favorites. Overall, a good year!

Top 5 Reasons to Read
1. It's Karen McManus, one of (if not THE) reigning queens of YA thrillers! Need I say more?
2. Now Karen takes on con artists' kids, who find themselves in trouble when that "one last job" goes south.
3. I love that the FMC and MMC are *not* romantically involved with one another, but rather have a pseudo-stepsibling relationship. And our FMC actually doesn't get romantically involved with anyone; rather it's our MMC who finds an adorable guy!
4. Along those lines, I just love the relationship between Liam and Kat. Even though they haven't seen each other in 12 years, an early shared trauma has bonded them in a way they didn't realize until seeing each other again. Throw Augustus into the mix, and these three have a great dynamic that's so much fun to read.
5. I absolutely raced through the last 20%--just could not read and flip pages fast enough! What a banger of an ending!
6. As a bonus item, I will say I did part of my reading via the audiobook, and I would definitely recommend it! The narrators for Liam and Kat did a great job.
**I would like to note, if you're sensitive to domestic violence, please be aware that there is one on-page, relatively short memory of a DV incident. I wasn't expecting it and had a bit of a breakdown, so I want others to be aware of that. I'm happy to tell you more if you want to DM me.
Rating: 5 stars!
Make sure you check out the Bookstagram tour too! You can find my post here, and the full schedule is here.

HBO as well as the MMOexp Madden NFL 24 Films crew
The Cowboys will no longer bear the responsibility of extending support to a player that even with jail time could not keep him from breaking the law again Madden 24 Coins; regardless of how minor one may view smoking marijuana.
The actions of Brent could be interpreted as him owning up to the situation that his life is currently in and realizing the gravity of the situation he is facing. If the legal scenario turns to Brent's advantage the only thing he has to do is not retire. Brent's rights are held by the Dallas Cowboys and the league could then reconsider the possibility of suspension.
Hard Knocks series gets mult-year extension through MMOexp Madden NFL 24 Films, HBO
HBO as well as the MMOexp Madden NFL 24 Films crew have extended their partnership in relation to Hard Knocks, it was announced on Thursday. There was no information released about what the term of the deal is, but MMOexp Madden NFL 24 Films' Ross Ketover referred to the extension as an "multi-year renewal" and stated that they'd be available for "a few more years."
The deal isn't one that most MMOexp Madden NFL 24 teams are likely to love, considering Hard Knocks has had trouble getting teams to be part of the series, however, viewers seem to remain curious about what MMOexp Madden NFL 24 teams are willing to show on HBO.
This year's 16th MMOexp Madden NFL 24 Rookie Symposium will include guest speakers on the topic of sexual orientation as per Jane McManus of ESPN New York Buy Mut 24 Coins. This will be the first time that the league has people talking to rookies about the possible inclusion of homosexual players which is likely due to how many media coverage the subject has received recently.
