1. They removed and cancelled shows From HBO Max, like Aquaman: King of Atlantis, Close Enough, Elliott From Earth, The Fungies! Infinity Train, Mao Mao, Heroes of Pure Heart, Mighty Magiswords, OK K-O, Let's Be Heroes, Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, Summer Camp Island, Tig n' Seek, Victor and Valentino, And Several Others. Like The What The Fuck! It Seems That Someone Doesn't Gives A Shit About Any Animation At All, Warner Bros Discovery Is Being So Not Fair To All Of Us! And all they care about is the stupid live action and reality shit. So Yeah, I Guess We Need A Marathon On Either Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Adult Swim, Or Discovery Family.

2. They cancelled Scoob! Holiday Haunt, Batgirl, And Other Movies That Warner Bros Is Planning To Make. What The Fuck! I Just Waited For Those Movies To Come, But This Pile Of Shit Has Came And Ruined It. Despite the fact that they have cancelled Batgirl Just Because They Don't want to get criticized.

how i'll be operating my vanessa fnaf canon (vr - security breach canon ending) -- spicy take, don't care if you hate it.

The developers make the VR games and use afton’s cpu for the player character. & initially he wants to bond with vanessa (the product tester) and possess her, because she’s blond and green eyed and easily manipulated due to her past. she reminded him of Elizabeth, but this would change.

So he takes a liking to her, at first seeing her as weak. He possesses her to get him back into the real world and using Vanny steals his consciousness back from the developers, a-la Vanny, when she gets the entire staff killed by animatronics. stealing his CPU board back, to use later on in she & afton's plans to rebuild his robotics empire.

Then somewhere along the lines, Afton (through Vanessa) buys shares and/or ownership of any remnants of the dead (& cheap) company / fazbear entertainment. They (under the table) make Fazbear entertainment LLC or whatever, and with afton’s guides and help she (or basically HE HIMSELF) creates the pizza plex from the shadows using public faces, to keep herself hidden.

this explains why she got the job/appears as a security guard in Security Breach, so she can have full access to the pizzaplex and hide her true role in the company. It also explains why Afton is not possessing her anymore -- but we'll get to that. she could get herself the job, and ensure she's where she needs to be when this all goes down.

& meanwhile she creates his son again in Gregory, because of what he’s instilled in her through their shared consciousness. He's a robot who doesn't know he's a human, and somehow when Freddy malfunctions it reboots Gregory, which makes him lose his memory. I'm not sure if she would have been planning to also salvage baby, as Elizabeth's soul was already inside baby -- but i think the point of this was to please Will.

Which explains the family scenes in security breach with the staff bots - an obsessed Vanessa who’s playing house with Afton. With herself, as head of the family, at the head of the table. the woman who understands afton, better than his wife or the mother of his children ever could have. She belongs with him here, realizing his dream. active in his dream Nobody knows she’s really the ceo and can get herself hired All the while she and Afton worked to get him back into the Springtrap suit, as with Afton she wouldn't need access to his plans. seeing as William would be the one executing the robots, he can simply use her as a vessel to create everything. It would also make sense as to why Afton and Vanny selected the site of the old location to build on, so they could secretly work on salvaging the burntrap suit for Afton to transfer himself into. King of Secret Hideouts anyone? It could also be explained by Vanny having the plans, due to Glitchtrap's apparent ability to infect databases.

Finally, William gets to see his dream come to fruition free of Henry's influence, aside from the popular chica. He could finally be happy again, with his kids (or the ones who didn't betray him like michael) and the woman who understands him.However, his beloved (or less beloved purple bonnie) has to be decommissioned and replaced by monty gator, in order to supplement parts for burntrap body.

But what Vanessa doesn't anticipate is Gregory's modern technology failing due to Glamrock Freddy. He begins to work with glamrock Freddy to destroy afton’s new dream. He's destroying the robots! He'll ruin everything they've worked so hard for. so Vanny (also explaining her hatred for Gregory aka what she’s jealous of aka afton’s former life) Takes it upon herself to find him, and deliver him to burntrap instead as perhaps a final child victim. a final way to bring him happiness out of this rogue program who's destroying everything they worked so hard for. Why she wants to stop Freddy from helping Gregory and why Gregory doesn't trust Vanny. Because somewhere deep down, gregory KNOWS vanny. he knows that she was part of him, and that she would want to harm him. It's why Vanessa would want Freddy sent back to his room, or for the animatronics to be after Gregory. Afton and Vanny control them. Afton and Vanny are what corrupted them, to try and bring Gregory to heel. Why Roxy will 'find him first' -- because she's the best. They all are working for Vanny to try and bring Glamrock Freddy and Gregory down to Burntrap. Ending this, and returning their former glory once and for all.

For once, he doesn't feel a pulse, or a heartbeat. He feels, instead, a wave of sheer absence. It's cold, and it pushes through his senses like a wind. He looks up from his books, peering through the window of the library, and is horrified to see smoke. Billowing, broiling, spilling out across the sky. Vladimir leaves the tomes and moves towards the glass for a better look, feeling his stomach drop as he realises just what he is seeing.

The Harrowing Mist is early this year. It is reaping the birds from the sky, the beasts in the fields, and the people in the streets.

He feels sick. People are dying and he can feel it happening. Even from up here, in the Bastion, he can feel people's hearts stopping and their bodies going cold; he can see them getting to their feet again, but he knows there is nothing left in them that one could call 'alive'. The smoke is clambering, climbing the walls, reaching and lashing like malicious hands. Vladimir has never seen the Mist like this before, and the soul-lights of the Hungry Lost are far too numerous. It's like an army has descended on Noxus--

A hand clamps down on his shoulder, and he almost screams. But he exhales the nervous sound into a wheeze of a laugh, instead, as he recognises the perfume, and the heartbeat, of the woman. "Matron."

She says nothing. Her grip stays tight. Vladimir's smile - risen during the embarrassed moment - fades, then drops entirely. She isn't saying anything. She is watching the chaos unfolding outside with a stony expression. Her eyes are grim, and unflinching.

There are few things Vladimir knows for certain about the matron, his mentor and patroness and much more besides. But in this moment, as she grips his shoulder and watches Noxus being lashed by death, he learns two new things: she had known this was coming, and she was afraid.

He keeps her eyes on the window, watching the armies below as they fight the smoke, and then their own comrades. Her grip tightens, her nails digging into the fabric of his coat. Her face turns to him, and the last part to move is her gaze, which snaps from the view to his face. "We're leaving, dearest one." Her voice has none of the soft, smoky teasing to it that it normally has. Now, her words are low, and crisp, and there is such quiet force behind them.

She sounds as imperious as a queen.

The last time she had made this insistence, he had been forced to resurrect Sion, to power the behemoth's heart and flood the dead man's veins with loyal servants that had been rendered to fluid. He had resisted, then, and he had been punished for it, and forced to obey. Now? Now he doesn't dare think about second-guessing her.

It will not be long before the Mist climbs the Bastion. He will not be safe without her.

"... Yes, Matron." He doesn't ask where they're going. He doesn't ask about the rest of the Trifarix. He doesn't even ask about his servants, who are wide-eyed behind him and looking to him in panic, in plea. There is death everywhere, and she is here to save him, that is all that matters.

She is afraid. He can read it in the beat of her heart. She had known this was going to happen, and so she knew she was going to be afraid, but even so there is fear in her. She has never been afraid, but now she is. That frightens him more than the Mist.

He says nothing, letting himself be steered towards the nearest mirror. The silvery glass ripples like water, and the Matron's tight grip turns to a push, forcing him through to the shadows on the other side, before she joins him.

He hears Marie and Jacques scream, and he tries to turn back, tries to save his servants, but the Matron links her arm through his and pulls him, striding into the dark, leaving him no choice but to follow.

Roswell Conspiracies: Reboot?!?!!!?!

In looking into "Supernatural Academy", a mystery has been solved, what happened to '90s syndicated cartoon production company Bohbot Kids? Apparently, it became 41e.tv. Their biggest show is "Super Monsters".

The '90s was the downward spiral for syndicated cartoons. And saw the rise of infomercials 8 hours a day during the weekends. Why show movies or cartoons when some terrible product will pay for the time slot during the day or night? Bohbot Kids Network shows were on at 5 or 6AM and a lot of the time they were pre-empted.

A very good show was "Roswell Conspiracies: Aliens, Myths, and Legends". It was one of the shows that rode the wave of cultural icon, The X Files.

I started my Saturday mornings by taping the show first (and when it was pre-empted for an informercial it ruined my day). When the first half of the season was released on DVD (at my local dollar stores), I got them all.

At one point Fox Kids grabbed it and ran it up against "Men In Black" on Kids WB.

ENTERTAINMENT LLC (41E) announced today a second project in YA animation in the science fiction space with Roswell Conspiracies™. The Company created the project in-house, owns exclusive, global, multimedia, animation rights and plans 8 hourly episodes (8 x 44’) first season.

Monsters aren’t real, but aliens are. And the creatures that humans call vampires, werewolves, ghosts and goblins are actually different species of extraterrestrials – most of whom are peaceful and able to pass as human beings. They live among us, hiding in plain sight. However, there are some aliens that are more horrible and bloodthirsty than any monster of myth or legend. These dangerous creatures are hunted by a cohort of humans and aliens who work for a top-secret multinational organization known as the ALLIANCE.

It’s been 20 years since the Alliance locked up the last of the enemy aliens, leaving the peaceful extraterrestrials to further assimilate and forge new lives alongside their human neighbors and friends. The Alliance has shrunk in size and scope, leaving a bare-bones team in charge of maintaining the ruse of “Area 51” – and an aging team of complacent guards to watch over their alien prisoners.

But then a so-called internet “joke” changed everything. This summer over 2 million users RSVP’d to a Facebook invitation to “Storm Area 51 (they can’t stop all of us)”. Pololū is a sacred place.

Don't let it be ruined!!

Kohala is the birthplace of an infant who sought refuge in Pololū Valley and grew up to become the King of Hawaii and unify the lands. Original place names of this region tell the mo'olelo (story) of how the people of this place protected this infant on his journey to Pololū Valley. "A‘ohe u‘i hele wale o Kohala" (No youth of Kohala goes empty-handed) speaks to the generosity of the Kohala people. Pololū Valley is more than a place of "cultural signficance". It is the history of the Hawaiian people. It is a place of refuge that we must protect for our future generations.

On December 11, 2020 at the Board of Land and Natural Resources meeting the Division of Forestry and Wildlife submitted a request for approval to apply as a co-applicant to the County of Hawaii Planning Department together with Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC to submit a PCRS application for a 13-lot subdivision along the ridge at Pololū Valley. A request for approval to enter into a Letter of Intent with Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC was also submitted to donate land to the State of Hawaii.

At this meeting representatives from these organizations spoke as if the community was in agreement with their submittals. No one from the community attended the meeting or was notified about it. Prior discussions with the community were about the donation of lands to the State which include 5 acres to build a "comfort station" and parking lot for visitors and acreage on the valley floor for conservation. There was NO discussion about the proposed subdivison along the ridge. Surety Kohala Corporation and KP Holdings LLC will only donate land to the State AFTER the County approves the application for the subdivision. This is not a donation. It's a payout.

History of Brunswick

Beautifully balanced, is the motto of the historical town of Brunswick, Cumberland County, USA. Brunswick is a well populated city in the country, and home to the 6,498 families living in the city. The town of Brunswick, was originally inhabited by the Native Americans, who named the city Pejepscot, and the name of the city simply means "the long, rocky rapids part [of the river]". Politics as Religion After George Floyd. This Isn't an Orwellian Novel. This Is Your Country | RealClearPolitics

What are you really seeing as Americans kneel, hands raised in secular prayer, repeating political creeds on the TV news? And that secular foot-washing?

You're witness to neo-Marxist appropriation of Christian symbolism, in the aftermath of the horrifying Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd.

And now, the priests of the secularist left separate the biblical sheep from the goats on the basis of skin color.

Floyd, an African American, was killed by a white cop who has been charged with murder. Most, if not all, Americans were disgusted at that cop's knee on Floyd's neck. And most Americans, of all races, still express grief, seek common understanding, and push for long overdue reforms.

Yet many who seek reform are themselves confused and fearful. In the biblical parable of the sheep and the goats, the sheep went to heaven, the goats were sent to hell. But in the current political universe, whites must atone for the sins of white racism even if they're not racists, even if their families arrived here only yesterday.

And even the mere suggestion this might be unfair, the slightest hint of resistance, can trigger accusations that could ruin careers, deny entrance to the professions, and drive nuance from the public square. And it is all by design.

Christianity teaches us that all of us are sinners, that repentance comes before forgiveness. But today's hard left is not about forgiveness. It is about power.

Yes, racism still exists. But applying sin upon an entire group based on skin color is antithetical to Christian teachings. And it is in direct opposition to the promise of America.

I'm no theologian, but my ancient Greek Orthodox Christian faith teaches us to condemn racism and support the oppressed. We're judged on sins we commit as individuals. The late Archbishop Iakovos, seen in old news photos with piercing eyes and black robes, stood with the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma in 1965. Both religious men abhorred judging entire groups of people by skin color. But they are long gone.

The use of religious symbolism in politics isn't new. I've seen two recent presidents absurdly wave the Bible to ward off the demons of negative news: Bill Clinton years ago, and Donald Trump just the other day. Call it exploitation, and I won't argue.

But neo-Marxists hostile to faith, appropriating religious practice and using race to separate sheep from goat in the service of power on earth, are a profoundly different matter. Politics is their religion. It is relentlessly Orwellian. This isn't some dystopian novel. This is your country.

Must I reject the ancient teachings of faith to accommodate power? The high priests of the left tell us those who don't kneel during the national anthem are guilty. And anyone who is silent is guilty, because, they insist, "silence equals violence."

Does any of this allow room for reasoned discourse, to help a nation find a path forward? No. Now the left dominates the Democratic Party and has no room for tolerance of differing views. All this tears America by the roots.

NFL quarterback Drew Brees said his respect for the American flag wouldn't allow him to kneel during the national anthem. But he quickly caved. His wife publicly confessed her "sins." They beg forgiveness. As any student of the Maoist Cultural Revolution would tell you, they were broken in their struggle session.

White Democratic Party leaders put on West African kente cloth and prayerfully drop to their knees in photo-op solidarity. Yet many, including West Africans, African Americans and others saw this as a cynical stunt.

The New York Times dropped to its knees before its own woke-world newsroom, for daring to publish the op-ed of U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. Cotton's piece argued that modern history and the law allowed for President Trump to send federal troops into riot-torn areas. I'm on record opposing this and compared it to pouring gasoline on a fire.

But Cotton isn't just some guy off the street. He's a U.S. senator, a Harvard graduate. That liberal Ivy League nurtured generations of Times editors who protected an important tradition, that the paper's op-ed page would welcome a free exchange of competing ideas. After an internal purge, the Times promised its woke-world staff it would sin no more. The Times abased itself, earning a new motto: All the Newspeak fit to print.

We see stammering white Democratic liberals, like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, devoured by the hard-left Black Lives Matter that demands the defunding of municipal police departments. And the woke Minneapolis town council agreed with them.

Democrats fear pushing back too hard against BLM on police defunding, but they do see the political problem for their presidential candidate, Joe Biden. The Rev. Al Sharpton went out to reshape the message, saying BLM really didn't mean it. But they do mean it.

History informs us that liberty and democracy aren't the natural state of humankind. A democratic republic is difficult enough to maintain, even in cultures with a history of ideals vital for nourishing a democracy.

Now, though, Americans are being encouraged to "de-colonize" our home libraries. So which books do I rid myself of first? Aristotle, Edmund Burke, "The Road to Serfdom" or the Bible?

Coerced fearful kneeling in fealty isn't among democracy's necessary virtues. Even American pop culture, even comic books, once recognized this.

But that must have been some other country, one that looked, remarkably, like this one.

PlayStation VR Library Now Over 100 Titles

Originally launched on 13th October, 2016, the PlayStation VR went through something of a rocky start to reach its current position as king of the high-end virtual reality (VR) castle, with over 1 million units sold. With the upcoming release of the updated PlayStation VR headset, this seems like a good opportunity to look at the history of the device so far, and what is currently available for users to play.

Upon first launch, the PlayStation VR’s popularity appeared to take Sony by surprise, as the company had not produced enough stock to meet demand, a problem particularly seen in Japan where customers queued around the block on restock days. With the new PlayStation VR version seeing initial release in Japan later this month, lets hope Sony have learned from experience.

The PlayStation VR features a 5.7 inch OLED panel with a display capable of 1080p resolution, the device also has a video output box that allows video to output to the TV as well as the headset as well as providing processing for 3D audio effects. Though the PlayStation VR has no build-in headphones, it has a standard 3.5mm audio jack for users to plug in their own headphones, or a third-party audio solution such as the Mantis. The headset has nine LEDs for position tracking, which is PlayStation Camera is responsible for.

Golden eyes watched as the LLC robot moved along the Nova. Large plasma cannons posed to shoot any who dare to question his existence, which was the funny thing being that ISIC wasn’t one to support the idea of anyone existing. His tail flicked irritatingly behind him, keeping his eyes on the LLC before the skull-faced one turned to look at him. Blue sockets into golden devil irises. “Oh look at what the cat dragged in. Another hopeless fighter.” His voice echoed across the ship that was in flight. Black talons flexed but Damon didn't say anything. Instead his lips dragged across his face in fake amusement, still not a word was said. The Xantrophn began to make his way over to this hubris thing, tail raising avoiding drag and black talons scraping against the floor. “Seems I’ve made this extinct species angry, don’t worry little guy, we knew it was going to happen someday to everyone.” Let it be said that the creatures of Deftinus never really liked technology, to begin with. They didn’t need it and yet strived to be the best. With their intelligent primitive ways, they were able to live just as everyone else, granted they didn’t have much with showers or robots but they knew the gist of it. However, when it came to interacting with this said technology they looked at it with dislike due to the little knowledge they knew.

Damon had heard and talked with ISIC before, listened to every negative thought that surrounded the Magnus as well but now that he was finally seeing him once again he found the robot to be a huge ass. Finally coming face to face with this abomination, a lowly growl left him. Anger filled his eyes and the tension was so thick it could suffocate. “I would suggest not to mess with me.” He warned, however, that only earned Damon one of ISIC’s famous laughs. He had warned him, the only one he would give and the idiot was stupid enough to ignore it. “Alright.” The Xantrophn snorted, rearing his outstretched hand back. The sounds of screeching could be heard, thick talons raked across the android’s glass dome, three large scratches covering ISIC’s view as the sounds of cracking threatened to break the glass. “That’s for calling me extinct. And this.” He’d snap rearing his tail back to stab at him as the sounds surfaced again threatening to rip the glass off. Just as his tail retracted, however, ISIC’s metal hand reached out, grabbing the thick end yanking Damon closer to him. “Not a good idea fella.” Soon the sound of plasma being charged was brought to the Xantrophn’s attention. A snarl lifting blue lips as the tail lashed in ISIC’s grip. “Like I’m afraid of some lowly weaponry like your’s?” Turning to face ISIC he sent several slices to the glass, lifting a leg to slam it against the thin middle of the Magnus’ before moving to bite the hand that gripped his tail.

Pain erupted against Damon’s shoulder as the plasma was released sizzling the blue skin and making the cloak shrivel from the dead hairs. “I would suggest not to mess with me.” ISIC mocked, his lower jaw opening to laugh loudly. “Fuck off you piece of junk.” Sending a harsh bite to his arm, three fangs on the top and bottom row of teeth chomping down savagely. Once the contact of cold metal hit the top of his mouth, Damon made it a point to shake his head viciously, hearing the plasma start again but also the release on his tail, flipping it back to safety. He sent an aggressive scratch to ISIC’s arm, grabbing it with both hands and pushing against the arm as a huge chunk was ripped off. Just as Damon was about to retract the overcharged pulse came barreling into him, square in the chest. It sent him flying some ways off and made his mind jerk from the electric it sent through the king. He made an attempt to land on four legs but too fast caused him to roll on his side. The smell of a ruined cloak filled his nose, as well as the scent of his own blood and oil. It took him several seconds before he could stand again. Electic making Damon on the occasional jolt. “Asshole.” He huffed, dragging his feet up to stand, looking down he could see a huge hole in his armor, the straps to the cloak completely gone as it cascaded down his arms. So great was the damage that a slight scar bled off of his chest. Thankfully, his armor had taken most of the hit.

The sounds of another laugh left ISIC however it seemed he had gotten quite damaged as well. With a missing chunk, broken glass and scratches on his arm and dome, they had done each other very well. “You go on about not caring about existence maybe it’s easy to kill you off. I’ll happily do it.” Standing up Damon lunged towards ISIC, however, a set of large hands grabbed the Xantrophn’s tail pulling him back. The sounds of Montana and Ghalt coming to their attention. “Not so fast, buddy. Can’t you see the mean robot’s in pain? Let him recover at least.” A loud groan left Damon and ISIC as Ghalt began to lecture the two on how to become better allies. Montana was the one to look after them while they cleaned up the mess and themselves before heading out on a mission the two were to do. The mission was a fail and the two didn’t get along since then.

He wrote the book in self-reflection and contemplation.   For supportive reasons in philosophical teachings, I used the wisest man ecclesiastics as the opening quote for my book.“Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.” - Ecclesiastes 7:8King James Version (KJV)The quote isn’t necessarily used to say that the end of the world will be better than its creation.  Assuming you saw the book cover image, which is a nuclear explosion spreading fire and debris. I intend to use the quote in a broader context for all the problematic analysis that is covered throughout the book. The plot exposes many of our present social and personal disorders; racism, alcoholism, capitalism and terrorism. The quote is also fitting because, as a story-line climaxes, it soon ends. Then another character’s life is introduced. The story starts with a woman named Robin, realizing that she was close to the end of her life. She could see her beauty fading and feel her health diminishing. In her assessments, she made an irrational decision to force her husband to spend time with her, before it was too late. As a result, a chain of negative events happened that forever changed her life.  The story-line emphasizes how we should love older age and embrace that we are survivors. God made a way for us throughout the years!"The quote is also fitting because, as a story-line climaxes, it soon ends. Then another character’s life is introduced. "Robin’s story was a main focal point because the fear of mortality is a problem within society. People don’t realize that life is eternal. When a person understands eternal relationships, they will not make fear based decisions. They embrace the beauty of their older age. Elders express the wisdom earned over the years, to those coming behind them. In turn, the youth benefit with purpose enriching their lives. Senior citizenship is a great time to see your grandchildren, full of energy, ready to carry out your legacy.Another topic included within the story is trust. Denise and Robert are newlyweds that still hold secrets. Openness and true love can surpass all negative connotations that trouble marriages. Being honest and trusting your partner's judgement are the best ways for a relationship to work. Both people must come to grips with their goals and share them with their counterpart. Dishonesty festers a lack of faith in your spouse, which is the beginning of the relationships destruction. To improve the end results, Denise and Robert finally humbled themselves to each other and God.

Oh, how much better it is for a sober father to be off meth and back with his children. They can love him and again trust his judgment. An alcoholic that restrains from drinking restores good liver and kidney functions. The benefits are enjoyed by an ex-smoker, who can receive and process the Prana. Their lifespan is statistically prolonged. Beginning the use of those intoxicants commenced the ruin of the body and relationships. It is better to end those habits.Next, we journey with an African American, male, named Kerry James. He experiences racial stereotypes by coworkers in the workplace. However, Kerry is able to overcome. He perseveres, by way of diligence, focus, and understanding.As the crisis boiled, and the poisonous quarantine lagged, Kerry continued his maintenance work inside the building. Coworkers began losing morale, due to witnessing death. Kerry focused on solutions. At one point, a Caucasian, male, coworker pointed a gun at him. Kerry talked to the man until he was able to see that we are all products of our planet. So, the man lowers the gun and begins hugging him. He and his wife agree to join Kerry’s crisis council. The focus of the meeting is unity and regrouping as a community.Kerry’s journey emphasizes how communication encourages mutual understanding. He invites and motivates others, as he reaches an epiphany, both psychologically and spiritually.Presently, in this country we are seeing flashes of different groups, expressing their need to be violent and separate. However, we are all of the Same Spirit, hoping that our children will be able to live in peace. This is what made Kerry’s epiphany such a great thing. He realized that we are all in the same boat. Human beings trying to live our best, maintain our resources, making a way for our children, in this humongous galaxy. The end of racism will be a beautiful day.Author’s note:‘Today I made cornbread from milk and organic eggs, creating with a sensation of endless possibilities. Book Review: A Darker Shade of Magic

Author: V.E. Schwab Publisher: Tom Doherty Associates, LLC Publishing Date: 2015 Pages: 398

I know I’m a little late reading this book, but nonetheless here we go:

This book is essentially about an angsty magician and a cross-dressing pirate forming an unlikely friendship to battle evil and save the world. And it’s pretty dang good.

First off, I want to commend Schwab for introducing a cast of delightfully complex characters. It’s always refreshing to see YA novels come to life in this way, where the characters are unique and sympathetic in their strengths and weaknesses, and riddled by pellicles of visceral imperfections. No character was completely “bad” nor completely “good”—except perhaps our two main antagonists—but even the absolute corruptness of the Dane twins was believable due to Schwab’s excellent world-building. The novel takes place somewhere within the early 19th century across multiple Londons: Grey London, which is considered the normal world in which magic is dormant and scarce; Red London, where is revered and the streets are drenched with the red hue it; White London, “a city drained through a magical war” and home of the treacherous Dane twins; and Black London, a London lost to chaos and ruin.

So Kell is our magician from Red London, with the rare ability to cross the parallel worlds. This makes him an ambassador between the Londons by day, and a smuggling collector by night. This hobby, Schwab cleverly uses to get the plot rolling.

Kell smuggles something quite complicated from White London in to Grey, which is where Delilah Bard, our cross-dressing pirate wannabe, steals from him. Again, we have an excellent manipulation of plot by Schwab, who uses the personalities of her characters to bring the storyline in to full swing through a series of believable choices that they make. It’s a classic and technical move on her part, one that is just flat out wonderful to see in a YA novel nowadays.

Similar to her methodical plot development, Schwab uses some pretty intelligent decisions regarding story structure as well. [Wannabe writers, pay attention] The book is written in a 3rd person limited POV, going back and forth predominantly between Lila and Kell with a few exceptions. However, this decision not only made the pacing of her chapters more fast-paced and enjoyable, but it also gave a nice tonal balance to the book as a whole due to the way Lila and Kell’s personalities complimented each other.

[I’m going to spend sometime on character analysis, so if you haven’t read the book yet of aren’t interest, just skip down until you see the ** for the rest of the review]

Let’s analyze Kell:

At the beginning of the book, our introverted magician came off as an insecure and anxious youth with a sort of inferiority complex with which he always made himself to be less than what he actually was. Despite his familial connection to Red London royalty, his deep bromance with Prince Rhy, and the profound reverence Kell generates from the citizens in Red London, Kell still manages to convince himself that he is just a pawn and a possession of the crown, no more. It’s sort of fascinating, however, the way he hides all of this behind a serene composure built upon his abilities. Kell knows he’s rare, he knows he’s powerful, and he’s always trying to act like he knows this, but also comes off short. Here’s a quote I actually found really interesting regarding this:

The people here believe that magic chooses its path…but by that logic, the magic had chosen Kell, and he did not believe that. Someone else could just have easily woken or been born with the Antari mark, and been brought into the lush red folds of the palace in his stead. (pg 256)

Kell can’t even bring himself to believe that he’s worthy of being chosen in any regards. Even though he puts all of his identity in his abilities, he can’t even manage to believe his abilities chose him. In effect, Kell is so insecure and sometimes even pathetic that Schwab needed to bring in just the right companion to refine our magician, teaching him to be a bold and confident person. So, essentially, Schwab carves out Kell’s opposite.

Enter Delilah Bard.

At first, I have to be honest, I didn’t entirely like Lila. I thought she was reckless, stupid, naively arrogant, and a fake. She’s this cutthroat who thinks she’s a pirate, but has no ship or crew or people skills, and despite all this she one-hundred percent believes she’s capable of such a lifestyle. Impossible.

However, the more Schwab unveiled her character, especially during in interactions with Barron, the owner of Grey London’s Stone’s Throw, I began to sympathize with her on a much deeper level than I had even with Kell. Here’s why: Lila Bard is the kind of person who could never form an emotional attachment to anything or anyone due to this profound fear she has towards settling.

…staying would have meant settling. In the end it’s been easier to hand the place and run. Not away, Lila had told herself. No, Lila had been running towards something. Something better. And even if she hadn’t reached it yet, she would… (pg 139)

Lila has, by far, some of the best quotes in the book:

“I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.” (pg 199) “A life worth having is a life worth taking.” (pg 139)

So here we have quite the determined little thief just trying to make something better out of what she has. It was here that I realized, these dreams of being a pirate and an adventurer, were really all she had to ignite a fire that was so often dulled by the harsh realities of a life full of abandonment and neglect. This made her significantly more believable to me, and I honestly came to realize that Delilah Bard would truly die just for the chance to reach out and seize any beauty from life, because—unlike so many of us—she really had nothing to lose.

Now, put a courageously reckless cutthroat with a powerful and insecure magician, you get the brilliant chemistry found within Kell and Lila’s friendship. I loved them more together than I did each of them apart. It was a fantastic duo, one which Schwab used to teach Kell bravery, to be confident in himself and his power, and to be grateful for the love he possesses. On the opposite end, Lila learns loyalty and friendship. She recognizes that there are things she could never do alone, and places she could never get to without some help. Her development, however, was a bit more subtle. At first, she used Kell to get her adventure, and slowly she began to actually care for him. At the same time, Kell began to care for her. Schwab brings about these affections through snippets of brilliant moments where we see our seemingly opposite protagonists connect with each other upon some very subtle similarities:

A wry smile cut across Lila’s mouth. ‘You’re a smuggler…If you live with royals and you dine with them and you belong to them…Why risk it?’ Kell clenched his jaw…’You wouldn’t understand.’ ‘Crime isn’t that complicated,’ she said…‘If they’re not in it for the money, they’re in it for the control. The act of breaking the rules, makes them feel powerful…Some people steal to stay alive, and some steal to feel alive…’ ‘And which are you?’ asked Kell. ‘I steal for freedom,’ (pg 266)

Kell feels as though he’s a possession being used. He steals in order to feel in control of a life that he feels is not his own. Lila steals not only for money, but for the hope that is constantly inside her; the hope that tells her “I have to be more.”

There are other moments, such as the one were Lila snaps at Kell for pitying himself in regards to his life with the king and queen—for having a family in which he feels more useful than loved. Lila goes on a memorable rant, raging:

‘…I’d wager you have everything you could ever need, and you have the audacity to claim it all forfeit because it is not love...Love doesn’t keep us from freezing to death…Love doesn’t buy us anything, so be glad for what you have and who you have because you may want for things but you need for nothing…’ (pg 235)

And in this moment, Kell saw Lila “not as she wanted to be, but as she was.”

I know this review ran long, but to sum up, buy the book. For aspiring writers, it’s a great way to look at the way a plot and chapters are structured, how the narrative moves from Kell’s more angst-driven tone to Lila’s sarcastic and witty one, and of course it’s a lovely example of wonderful character development. Especially take note of the way Schwab uses character decisions to carry her plot forward, and how she uses dialogue and circumstance to do most of the character revealing as opposed to straight-on just telling the reader. It’s most important to recognize that Schwab’s characters change. This is the key to satisfying any reader, and is the backbone to any good story.

Of course, A Darker Shade of Magic is not perfect. I actually think Rhy was not as present as he should’ve been—most of his character development was second hand from Kell and thus felt impersonal—and I think Holland was so close to being an complex antagonist, though it was clear he was written to garner more empathy.

Another issue was the plot resolution. I thought it was sort of a cop-out that conflict was resolved due to a fault (pride) on the antagonists’ end as opposed to a display of some epiphany of Kell’s part regarding his strength or character. It all came about too quickly, and I actually think Schwab could have spared another fifty pages or so, drawing out the complexity of the conflict.

Nonetheless, the book was absolutely solid with moments of flittering brilliance. I completely recommend it, and am excited to move on to the sequel.

1 Master of beauty, craftsman of the snowflake, inimitable contriver, endower of Earth so gorgeous & different from the boring Moon, thank you for such as it is my gift. I have made up a morning prayer to you containing with precision everything that most matters. ‘According to Thy will’ the thing begins. It took me off & on two days. It does not aim at eloquence. You have come to my rescue again & again in my impassable, sometimes despairing years. You have allowed my brilliant friends to destroy themselves and I am still here, severely damaged, but functioning. Unknowable, as I am unknown to my guinea pigs: how can I ‘love’ you? I only as far as gratitude & awe confidently & absolutely go. I have no idea whether we live again. It doesn’t seem likely from either the scientific or the philosophical point of view but certainly all things are possible to you, and I believe as fixedly in the Resurrection-appearances to Peter & to Paul as I believe I sit in this blue chair. Only that may have been a special case to establish their initiatory faith. Whatever your end may be, accept my amazement. May I stand until death forever at attention for any your least instruction or enlightenment. Across the ages certain blessings swarm, horrors accumulate, the best men fail: Socrates, Lincoln, Christ mysterious. Who can search Thee out? except Isaiah & Pascal, who saw. I dare not ask that vision, though a piece of it at last in crisis was vouchsafèd me. I altered then for good, to become yours. Caretaker! take care, for we run in straits. We too, the more or less just, I feel fall asleep dreamless forever while the worlds hurl out. Rest may be your ultimate gift. Rest or transfiguration! come & come whenever Thou wilt. My daughter & my son fend will without me, when my work is done in Your opinion. Strengthen my widow, let her dream on me thro’ tranquil hours less & down to less. Abrupt elsewhere her heart, I sharply hope. I leave her in wise Hands.               6 Under new management, Your Majesty: Thine.
