Watching and reading of the last month

Ok, it seems like I may have something to watch this summer. First of all, Link Click is getting season 2 and two episodes are already out. I will watch this.

Secondly, Kenshin. I have never been a great fan, but I may try it again this time around with fresh animation. I remember that I watched Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen a long time ago and liked that one, but the TV series has never clicked with me. Probably because Tsuiokuhen is so angsty and tragic that watching the goofy TV series just after it, felt off.

Other than that

I have finished reading The Merlin Conspiracy by Diana Wynne Jones and she was fantastic as usual. The only thing I would change is to throw away Nick who is ok, but Roddy was a much more interesting character, so I would rather have more of her than switch between her and Nick’s pov.

I am finishing The Sola Trilogy by Irmelin Sandman Lilius. A story about three girls living in Finland at the end of 19th century. I was told it is an unusual and very good children’s book that is hard to describe, and I can understand why now.

Also, I have finished Shirley by Charlotte Brontë, the themes of this one felt very modern. Firstly, there is a conflict between an employer and his employees as the employer, a mill owner, wants to take advantage of modern technology of his time, which means for his employees, they lose their job and they are not happy about it. It was kind of amusing to read it when screenwriters are striking not to be replaced with AI.

It is feministic as one of the main characters wants to work but has of course not many options as a woman and it is also noticed that who can blame women for being shallow and focused on their appearance and finding a husband when they are banned from taking many jobs, education and so on. Maybe it is not a very original point now, but this story was published 174 years ago.

Also, there is the relationship between the two main heroines that has been given a lot of space and feels sapphic. Even if the girls are at the end married to some dudes it feels like a trick not to make this story too scandalous by the standards of 19th century. Also, what a funny coincidence that Shirley is married to a guy who has no money and works by teaching others just like Caroline who has no money and was thinking about becoming a governess while Caroline is married to a mill owner, and it just so happens that Shirley is a mill owner too. I am sure these parallels that make it look that Shirley and Caroline find a male version of each other to marry are a total coincidence. ;)

With themes like this I thought it would have a modern adaptation, but the only adaptation is very old, from 1922.

Happy 20th Birthday to the greatest OVA in the world--Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal! This is by far one of the longest yet favorite projects that I’ve written. Took me quite a while to compose my thoughts on this film because its packed with so many wonderful things. I wanted to do analysis on the movie’s soundtrack as well but that would’ve made this article way too long!!! Please enjoy my latest work! :) Thank you so much!
