From Timeranger to Gokaiger there were 5 shows that used flip phones as henshin devices. But from Go-Buster to Kiramager, only Zyuogher used a phone/rubic cube and Kiramager used a smart watch. Why didn't Sentai used smartphones as henshin devices? Is it because smartphones look boring lack the inherent coolness and playability of flip phones? Or is it because Kyoryuger made Bandai thought weapons should be henshin devices instead?

I think it's because regular smartphones don't have a dynamic action like flip phone do/did. There is something really cool about being able to flip open your device and punch in a code. I mean, that was what a younger me thought was absolutely cool as heck about Kamen Rider 555's henshin sequence. There is one Sentai-adjacent series that HAS used smartphones though. The High School Heroes had a phone app that allowed the heroes and the villains to transform.

And I will always take the opportunity to advocate for the High School Heroes.

Hero Vision Vol.15 (2004/Summer) ft. Kamen Rider Blade Cast Interviews Ryoji Morimoto x Terunosuke Takezai Segment (translations below)

"Currently, It appears that the two of you are not getting along within the drama."

Takezai: Hajime is reluctant to reach out, while Kotaro is. Kotaro wants to protect Amane-chan and Haruka-san, but can't even protect himself, and Hajime is the one to always protect us, which frustrates Kotaro……So now, he's taking it out on Hajime?

Morimoto: When he sees Kotaro like that, I feel that Hajime finds it very interesting.

Takezai: There's a part of Hajime that Kotaro admires, but he won't allow himself to feel that way. It's a complicated feeling.

Morimoto: Hajime is uncertain too. Being around Amane-chan makes his heart feel at ease and warm inside, but he still doesn't understand what it means "to be loved," and he doesn't even understand why he wants to protect her. As his human side develops, so too will the number of his problems, and I think Hajime is going to have a much harder time from now on.

"So, apart from your roles, what do you like about each other?"

Morimoto: He has good intuition, can immediately grasp the situation, and he's also very tolerant and considerate.

Takezai: I don't have anything to say about his performance, other than that I've learned quite alot from him. Usually, you act pretty silly, don't you? And when everyone's together, the tension really rises. But, when it comes to acting, he changes completely. I think, "Is this really the same guy?" The range of emotions, and the way in which he switches between them is amazing. I'm usually very reserved.

"Kotaro's becoming more and more quiet…or rather, it's more like he's becoming serious."

Takezai: There's alot of emotional ups and downs. Every time we get a new script, it's something new. I'm like, "Ah, so this time it's this emotion." I used to play Kotaro, but the range has become so narrow, that now, I'm pretty much playing the role of Terunosuke Takezai.

"Would you ever consider switching roles?"

Morimoto: I don't get to smile much, do I? Kotaro is a really cute guy, and he has a charming smile, I'd like to be able to laugh too.

Takezai: I'd like to try being Chalice. I rarely get to show my emotions. If you think about it, we're the complete opposite in terms of personality.

Morimoto: Yeah. I think Hajime is jealous of Kotaro because they're complete opposites. Hajime wants to smile, but his smile continues to be rather awkward. I want to hurry up and become human…..

Takezai: Then you'd be a monstrous human (laughs).

"What's the most interesting part about Chalice?"

Morimoto: Because I don't have many lines, the lack of dialogue makes it much more difficult to communicate through my eyes and facial expressions. That's why I'm looking forward to seeing how I'll show the process of becoming human.

"Come to think of it, have you been working out recently?"

Morimoto: When I watched 555's movie, there's a shirtless transformation scene, so I was worried that something like that would be in our movie, so I just thought......I don't want to look like a matchstick if I have to take my clothes off (laughs). I do think Hajime is strong, even in his human body.

"What about Takezai's role in the film?"

Takezai: The movie takes place 4 years after the TV show, and I've become a stuck up guy after selling my books and becoming rich……

Morimoto: Kotaro seems to be much more active in the movie.

"Do you ever have time to go out drinking together or just hang out?"

Takezai: Now that you mention it, we've never gone out drinking together once, have we?!

Morimoto: We all go out to eat together, don't we?

"Do you share any common interests, like soccer or motorcycles?"

Morimoto: We do. We both like comedy.

Takezai: I like to laugh. Although, I'm better at being laughed at than at making people laugh.

Morimoto: I'm more of Tsubaki-kuns type.

Takezai: I think you're right

Morimoto: It's better if no one notices me doing it. So I try to do it secretly.

Takezai: There are times where the audio crew picks up on it, and then they'll suddenly start laughing. It makes me happy when they laugh.

Morimoto: I can't help but sometimes joke in front of everyone! Sometimes I do it too much and get pulled aside.

Takezai: Lately, no one comments on your jokes, so you've been forcing them.

Morimoto: I'm like, "…wha, hey!" (laughs).

Takezai: That's…it's alittle bit funny.

"You share a similar hobby, but do you have any differences?"

Takezai: Yeah, I love soccer, but I'm more of an indoor type of person. I recently had 3 weeks off, but during that time, I stayed inside for a whole week. It was tiring, but I do like to just space out at home.

Morimoto: I'm about ready to get out of here! (*he can't imagine being indoors for that long)

"Well then, finally, for you two complete opposites, please give a yell of support to each other."

Takezai: Yell? Support? Don't want to.

Morimoto: No (firmly).

Takezai: With Ryoji around, I can focus on acting with a sense of ease. I trust him.

Morimoto: I'm at ease too. I feel he gives off alot of confidence.

Takezai: The truth is that I have alot of work to do. And yet, everyone says it doesn't look that way…..

Morimoto: I can see you're nervous. Your tongue tends to do this, right? (he licks his lips)

Takezai: Yeah (laughs).

"Well, we're looking forward to it!"

Takezai: Please look forward to watching Chalice this August!

Morimoto: That's right! From now on, the relationships will continue to be very interesting!

what is, according to your perspective, an antagonistic organization or entity from modern Kamen Rider shows that closely resembles the f*scist roots of the original SHOCKER?

Admittedly there aren't a lot -- much of the villainy in heisei Kamen Rider comes from more relatable individual human errors than vast organisations to go for clearer cut drama; often relying on things like family members that went too far for what they thought was right for their siblings or children (Ryuki, W, Wizard), people whose dreams spun out of control and had to be shown the errors of their ways (Fourze, Saber), sometimes much more abstract supernatural monsters (Kuuga, Agito, Hibiki) or, uh, whatever the fuck (Den-O, Ex-Aid). This is in fact another big reason why I was desperate for Shin KR to have an overtly fascist enemy because it is something that had been missing from Kamen Rider for a while, and arguably allies had more in common with the kind of shit Ishinomori was writing about than enemies (Kougami Foundation, HIDEN, etc)

In that though, I think Build's Faust and especially the later Nanba Heavy Industries found a good balance between 'human' drama and fascists doing fascist shit; though obviously for a kid's show it did have to simplify like by saying The Gas Made Them Do It, or make Nanba cartoonishly evil. Still was pretty solid for what it was!

I might even argue 555's Smart Brain was a pretty good version of this, as a controlling entity over an entire species with a lot of power and influence. The fact it's not even defeated at the end only strengthens that

The Kamen Rider website has a bit more information about the upcoming collab, Senki Zesshou Symphogear x Kamen Rider 555: Another Testament

The event will start on October 27 and end on November 10. I didn't mention it before, but the story will be written by Toshiki Inoue. The card of Tsubasa in her Delta Gear will be in the event shop and there will also be a Memoria card titled "The Heart(s) of Human(s)" or "Human Heart(s)" something like that (not the organ though)

The synopsis given is:

"A parallel world in the not so distant future. In this world, humanity has been driven to the brink of extinction by its natural enemy, the 'Orphe-Noise.'

Tsubasa Kazanari fights as the leader of the Human Liberation Army in this devastated world. Hibiki Tachibana fights having inherited the name of Kamen Rider, the legendary savior. And Kanade Amou lost her life as a Symphogear wielder.

Symphogear and Rider Gear. When the two Gears cross, the warriors will evolve into a new form."

So yes, from the sounds of things, these are most likely new alternate versions of Kanade, Tsubasa, and Hibiki

Royale Start

Pretty wild amount of announcements this week. I'll cover both Geats spinoffs when they release, and I guess I should actually get around to watching 555 by next year.

New Generation Stars: Orb thinks about the Reibatos crisis, and then Mulnau's attempt to get revenge on him by gathering jewels, and activates the data on himself. However, there's someone else who he can never leave alone.

Geats: Furious at the exploitation of his mother, Ace destroys all of Glare2's spheres,but Buffa gets the killing blow, leaving Tsumuri unsure of what she should do. Geats and Buffa size eachother up, debating their next move, when Sueru, lacking a body, appears, congratulates them for the performance, welcomes them to the next stage, and vanishes with them, Ziin so distracted he doesn't notice a certain figure take the Vision Driver. Sueru introduces himself, they consider him the last boss, but he reveals he is restarting the Desire Royale, and distributes Desire Drivers across the city, one found by Daichi, with the right for the DGP to continue on the line, as those who receive Drivers, as well as Ace, Michinaga and Neon, receive invitations. Beroba seems intrigued, as Kekera appears with the Vision Driver, promising to show her new misery if she brings Keiwa back, seeking new thrills. Sara is tormented by nightmares of Keiwa apologising and vanishing, Kekera appears to her in frog form, offering a way to get Keiwa back, having her touch the ID Core left in the room to know what is happening. The next morning Keiwa is back, with no idea he was gone, Sara's deal with Kekera being she will be his new supported rider and Keiwa will be left unaware. Neon tells Kyuun she needs the DGP to stay, so she will wish for a world where no one knows Kurama Neon, so she can make a new life. Tsumuri approaches Ace, who suggests perhaps his sister wished him back, she denies being able to do that but acknowledges making a wish, she no longer recognises the DGP, Ace plans to wish for his mother to he free and happy. Sueru begins the DGP, and Neon and Sara run into eachother, neither particularly willing to fight the other, but fortunately Daichi is there to challenge both of them. Sara is Kamen Rider Hakubi, for now using Armed Claw. As Nadge-Sparrow overpowers Hakubi, Kekera approaches Keiwa, showing him what's happening and encouraging him to reclaim his Rider status to save Sara, he arrives in the nick of time, but Sara is unconscious, then Buffa approaches, but Ace gets them away. Ace tells them he is fightin to end the DGP, which neither agrees with, Keiwa at least not until he brings everyone back, he holds the goddess responsible for all the suffering, and so they cannot agree.

Kingohger: Gira recalls a discussion about the legend, and how apparently the ancient kings managed to fight together despite not getting along. He wakes up in Bugnarok custody, being demanded to summon the Greater Guardians. Himeno has treated the wounded, but all but Rita remain unconscious. Himeno wants to use Legend King-Ohger. Racles contacts them, threatening to not help with the cocoons unless they submit to him. Gira refuses to help the Bugnarok as the cocoons start moving. Each of the kings start accepting they may have to abandon their territory to protect their people, but each of their aides offers advice in their own way, to stick to their convictions. Deathnarok brings Gira to witness the end of human civilisation, but he knows the kings will never compromise their conviction, as they all turn up to fight, doing enough that Deathnarok decides to leave, as all 5 cocoons hatch. The Greater Guardians arrive to offer their aid, and as they recite the legend, Legend King-Ohger is born, crossing the kingdoms and destroying all of the Bugnarok. Racles manages to claim responsibility for Legend King-Ohger, but the Bugnarok are still scheming, and the narrator decides he cannot stay on the sidelines.

Metropolis: The jailed AHK members pass the time. Shiraishi is struggling with training, and Ohgaman offers support, unveiling an express panel, which Ex, sitting down to dinner with some of his teammates, uses to come to base. With members of the team being based outside of Fukuoka, especially Ex all the way in Kagoshima, Ohgaman has set up a network of these panels. Yabai Kamen is distraught to learn of Nectaris' arrest, but they've gotten a horde of medical education books, to Yuz-Yuz's joy, and Shuraomaru hatches a scheme. Ohgaman joins Shiraishi and Akuta on patrol. Great 2 delivers pizza to a man playing the Dogengers game. As part of a lesson to her, Shuraomaru destroys the Medical Education Book Yuz-Yuz is holding, before rampaging, when the heroes arrive Hyakutoban rushes in, Ohgaman having to support him when he is overwhelmed. Akuta manages to corner Yuz-Yuz, but the summons servants and runs forcing Hyakutoban to help Akuta, using the last weapon mode, a baton. Ohgaman has Shuraomaru beaten, but finds he doesn't have a Medical Education Book for the finisher, as his express order was stolen. Yuz-Yuz casually informs Shiraishi she enjoyed the book before fleeing, and Shuraomaru picks himself up, overwhelmed. Hyakutoban rushes in and cuffs him, but he isn't beaten, until the old man lends him his old used Medical Education Book. Afterwards, in the cell, Shuraomaru tries to escape, only settling down to join the game after being electrocuted.

Juuga Vs Olteca: Hana has been brought by two Neo Deadmans acolytes, but she's just there to tell Olteca they'll stop him, Olteca then goes looking elsewhere, only for Tamaki to greet him, and runs again. He meets with his liberator, who makes threats if he doesn't get the Juuga Driver. Tamaki brings Hiromi to the Sawagami lab, he was the one Otta was texting with, and with the issue resolved Rinna is now in a good mood and starts working on the Driver. They get word Orteca has captured Takada and the other scientists, and while Hiromi thinks they need to work out where they are, George already knows, and heads there as soon as he has the Juuga Driver. At the lab, he doesn't hand over the Driver right away, and Orteca stabs Takada. However, George already knows Takada is the culprit, aware Takada's reputation has come about by stealing other's research. Takada essentially blames this on Masumi, who one day dismissed him from the Giff research, and now aims to ruin George, he stole and merged with the other Giff Eyeball to become a Psuedo-Giftex. Juuga starts fighting, Hiromi and Hana stop Takada's assistants joining the fight by grabbing their ViStamps, and Rinna arrives to give George a modified Planarian ViStamp, which enables him to channel Chaser, and defeat Takada, destroying the eyeball. George points out that Masumi dismissed Takada to protect him from the consequences of the devil research. Olteca wants to settle things, and uses the Kraken ViStamp to become Kamen Rider Olteca, Rinna giving him a Chameleon ViStamp to summon the Zenrin Shooter, Juuga countering with Octopus' Drive abilities. In the end Juuga is Victorious, and Rinna and Otta reunite as Orteca is rearrested. He escaped again though, and the whole gang is chasing him.

Kamen season tier list? 👀

Damn anon you're going straight for the one that starts fights huh? Well in all fairness I'm pretty sure I have posted it before but... let's go with a slightly different format

Rather than ranking everything all on the same scale I've got different tiers of the same colour here representing what I like about each series in them. So don't get me wrong I love OOO more than Black and Ghost and ZO; it's just I love it for different reasons. So! While there's a fair bit of overlap between the two (Blade and Build especially), the top tier is essentially the ones I associate most with Kamen Rider's ultimate original meaning of a spiritual respect for life in all its forms and the need to fight fascism that naturally stems from those ideals; while the second tier is the ones that don't really follow that but which I still loved on a deeply emotional level. This franchise got me feeling things! Also Vulcan here represents his and Naki's arc in 01, plus the 01hers movies specifically because yeah 01 is that kind of show

Moving on, the third and fourth tiers are pretty self explanatory -- ones that I liked for a deeper reason, and ones that I just thought were a fuckin fun time. Decade has SO MUCH going on thematically but Ex-Aid was just some bullshit happening and I really can't fault it for that

Finally, yellow tier is ones that. I'm sure are really good! I've seen a lot of great analyses of them and in Ryuki and 555's cases specifically I think they're amazing seasons and respect what they do! But I really can't get into them! For different reasons these ones just failed to captivate me. And then red is the ones I actually don't like, with Kyoki representing Hibiki 30 onwards specifically

Did I really just write out a guide for my tier list which is probably self-explanatory anyway? ... yeah, I guess so! But I just wanted to make it clear. It's a complicated franchise to me that required a bit more than the usual rankings. And also, yes; that IS a lot of Kamen Rider I've watched! The only ones I haven't seen at this point are Skyrider, Super-1, ZX, Black RX and of course Revice, Black Sun and Shin Kamen Rider! I'm a bit obsessed
