In "The Fabulous Baker Boys" (Steve Kloves), Jeff Bridges goes soft on Michelle Pfeiffer. As one would.
Film composer Dave Grusin asked his pals Ernie Watts to play the sax and Sal Marquez to play the trumpet.

ECW Magazine: February 2000
ECW Pay-Per-View
ANARCHY RULZ
SEPT. 19, 1999 ODEUM THEATRE CHiCAGO, iL
by Dave Scherer
Extreme Championship Wrestling ushered in a new era at Anarchy Rulz on Sept. 19 at the Odeum Theatre in suburban Chicago, Ill.
Mike Awesome was crowned the new ECW world heavyweight champion in his federation return. He crashed the scheduled title match between Taz and Masato Tanaka and turned it into a three-way dance. Awesome’s victory ended Taz’s eight-month title reign.
Financially, it was a record evening for ECW. The company set an all-time record for fan attendance at an event (6,700) and gate revenue (drawing about $210,000). When the quality of the show is added into the equation - quite possibly the best pay-per-view any federation held in 1999 - it’s not difficult to understand why everyone left the Odeum smiling. The crowd made the great show even better with its vocal enthusiasm.
The announcing duo of Joey Styles and Cyrus The Virus did an outstanding job calling the action for the fans at home. There were even a few celebrities in attendance, as both Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins and Joe C. from Kid Rock were seen backstage.
Fans at the Odeum were warmed up with a dark match featuring Danny Doring and Amish Roadkill against Wild Bill Wiles and C.W. Anderson. The match was all Doring and Roadkill, as the young tandem punished their opponents before Roadkill pinned Wiles with a big splash from the top turnbuckle.
The show began for viewers at home with a video showing Tanaka arriving at the Odeum by car. As Steven Prazak asked him questions, which Tanaka ignored, Judge Jeff Jones interrupted them and told Tanaka he did not deserve to waltz back into ECW from Japan and get a world title shot. Tanaka pushed Jones to the side and left the scene. Jones then told the audience he had an “awesome” surprise for Tanaka.
lance storm (with dawn marie) vs. jerry lynn
This match was the technical masterpiece everyone expected it to be. Lance Storm, as usual, was accompanied by the beautiful Dawn Marie. Even though Lynn came to the ring with his bruised ribs taped up, the injury did not stop him from wrestling in his breathtaking style. In fact, Lynn was in control most of the match. After 10 minutes of action, both men attempted numerous pinfall attempts to no avail. Dawn Marie then involved herself in the match by handing Storm a chair, which he wedged in the corner between the ropes. Eventually, Lynn hit Storm with a DDT directly on the chair after it was taken out of the ropes. Despite that devastating move, Storm fought his way back and got the win when he rolled Lynn up for at the pin in 16:36.
chris chetti, nova and jazz vs. tony debit, simon diamond and tom marquez
Simon Diamond came to ringside and after making fun of Tom Marquez, challenged anyone from the back to come out and wrestle him. Jazz took him up on it, but Diamond weaseled his way out of the match and convinced Marquez to wrestle her instead. After Jazz quickly got the upper hand, Diamond and Tony Deito ran in and attacked her. Nova and Chris Chetti then came out and made the save for Jazz. It turned into a free-for-all when Amish Roadkill and Danny Doring entered the ring. Then, Rod Price, C.W. Anderson, Bill Wiles, Vito LoGrasso and Spanish Angel all charged the ring and joined the fray. This set the stage for New Jack, who appeared with a shopping cart full of weapons. New Jack attacked everyone and cleared the ring. He ended the match by using a staple gun on Price’s head and finished him off with a guitar.
yoshihiro tajiri vs. super crazy vs. little guido (with big sal e. graziano)
The next match was an example of a true ECW original, the three-way dance. Yoshihiro Tajiri, Super Crazy and Little Guido gave it everything they had in the ring, and out of the ring as well. In the early part of the match, the wrestlers teamed up with each other when it was to their advantage and attacked each other when it wasn’t. Guido was the first to be eliminated. He was pinned in 9:17 after Tajiri pasted him with a kick in the face while he was tied in the “Tree of Woe,” followed up with a moonsault by Crazy. Then, Tajiri and Crazy battled for a while until Tajiri nailed Crazy with a nasty brainbuster and got the pin in 14:37.
justin credible (with jason) vs. sabu (with bill alfonso)
After months of coming close to getting his hands on one half of the Impact Players, Sabu finally got Justin Credible in the ring. Before the match, Credible, with his manager Jason, showed referee Jim Molineaux restraining order he had to keep Sabu away from him. Molineaux agreed it was a valid legal document, but then told Credible that since this was ECW’s Anarchy Rulz, he was going to have to face Sabu anyway. When ring announcer Bob Artese refused to announce Credible as the winner of the match, Credible layed him out with a cane shot to the head. Then, the lights went out and when they came back on Sabu was in the ring. The match turned into everything fans have come to expect from Sabu. Sabu used chairs as launching pads and busted open Credible’s eye after putting him through a table. Jason tried to interfere but Sabu hit him with a legdrop. Credible used this distraction to cane Sabu. Credible finally got the pin in 14:04 after he hit “That’s Incredible” on Sabu.
taz (c) vs. mike awesome (with judge jeff jones) vs. masato tanaka for ecw world heavyweight title
After Taz and Masato Tanaka came to the ring, Awesome appeared in the crowd with Judge Jeff Jones. Taz took the microphone and dared Awesome to jump the barricade and come into the ring to fight him. ECW Executive Producer Paul Hayman, who was at ringside, tried to hold Awesome back. Taz announced he wanted to fight both Awesome and Tanaka, and Heyman granted his wish by turning the match into a three-way dance for the heavyweight title. Tanaka and Awesome teamed up to pin Taz in 2”00 after Awesome hit a frog splash from the top turnbuckle. Many of the ECW wrestlers were on the ramp during the match watching the bout. Tanaka and Awesome then renewed their feud - which they started in ECW rings during the summer of 1998 - by practically killing each other for the next 11 minutes. Awesome creamed Tanaka with an Awesome Bomb through a table and got the pin at 13:46. Taz then came back to ringside, kissed the belt and presented it to its new owner or a huge pop from the crowd.
tommy dreamer (with francine) and raven (c) vs. steve corino and rhino (with jack victory) for ecw world tag team title
Joel Gertner interviewed Tommy Dreamer, who was accompanied by Francine, about the status of both his injured back and the ECW tag team title, which he held with his enemy, Raven. Dreamer said he was not listening to the doctors anymore and that he was in Chicago to fight. Steve Corino came out with Rhino and Jack Victory and degraded Dreamer on the mic. Corino then sent Rhino in to attack Dreamer. Dreamer dominated Rhino until Corino came back to ringside with a ladder. Rhino got the upper hand and as he was about to put Dreamer away, Francine ran in and attacked him. Rhino slammed her to the mat. Then out of nowhere, Raven appeared and hit a DDT on Rhino. Raven and Dreamer then hit DDTs on Corino and Victory and pinned them both retaining the titles in 3:23.
rob van dam (with bill alfonso) vs. balls mahoney for ecw world television title
Before the main event, Axl Rotten welcomes Mike Awesome back to ECW and said he would like a shot at Awesome’s heavyweight title. Lance Storm, Justin Credible and Johnny Smith came out and said Rotten was out of line for asking for what was theirs. The Impact Players said they should get the first title shot at the new champion. When they ordered Rotten to rescind his challenge, Rotten chose to fight even though he was outnumbered. Balls Mahoney and Spike Dudley appeared and cleared the ring, with Mahoney knocking Smith out of his scheduled main event match against Rob Van Dam by nailing Smith in the head with a chairshot. Rotten then took the mic and said Van Dam needed a new opponent and suggested the champ put the title on the line against Mahoney. Van Dam, with manager Bill Alfonso, accepted the challenge. Mahoney and Van Dam brawled around ringside for the first five minutes of the match. Once back in the ring, they traded their extensive arsenal of moves, with both men scoring numerous near falls. Near the end, Mahoney hit Van Dam in the head with his signature “Anarchy Rulz” chair, but Alfonso broke the count when he entered the ring and hit Mahoney with a chair shot on Alfonso and prepared to hit Van Dam with another. However, Van Dam spring in the air and nailed Mahoney with the Van Daminator, getting a two count. Van Damn then climbed to the top rope and hit the five star frog splash to retain his title in 19:36. After the match, the men embraced and the crowd cheered.

Song of the Day - Happy 50th Birthday to “Over-Nite Sensation”, the twelfth album from Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, released September 7th, 1973.
As wonderfully weird as any Zappa creation, this album was arguably the most “accessible” of his stuff.
This track, “Montana” is just classic Zappa… bizarre… but flawlessly delivered…. A song about realizing a dream of becoming a dental floss tycoon in Montana….
Here with a grand group of sidefolk backing up the Mothers: Ian and Ruth Underwood doing their magical percussion and sax, Bruce Fowler on trombone, Sal Marquez on trumpet, Jean-Luc Ponty on violin, George Duke on synthesizer, and for backup singers, Tina Turner and the Ikettes…
The track has a a screaming good Zappa guitar solo… and the Tina and the Ikettes backup is surreally fabulous.
Saw most of this crew with Zappa and the Mothers perform this track, among other Zappa, in a live performance, a live midnight show at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, just after this came out… Hoooooo-eeeee what a show….
As strange as his music could be, Zappa truly was a genius, and the music is tight as can be…
This album is one which, like sometimes happened back in the era of record albums, really deserves to be heard in one fell swoop… it is all one piece really…. one mood… like great albums used to be…
But if we’re picking only one tune, this is the one… fun crazy Zappa delight….

So after getting pushed off the stage at the end of 1971, FZ spent most of 1972 recuperating—he couldn’t stand or walk, and couldn’t really use his voice. Most people would surely take the year off. Zappa stayed at home and worked on his instrumental music, recording two of his greatest jazz rock albums.
This first, Waka/Jawaka, is the lesser of the pair, but great nonetheless. Note the sink taps that say HOT and RATS—this is Hot Rats part 2. The centerpiece is Big Swifty, a 17-minute jam around an intensely wonderful main riff. He got an enormous orchestra together for it—if Hot Rats was small combo jazz, this and Grand Wazoo are his big band albums. Both rely heavily on horn sections, most prominently on the trumpeter Sal Marquez. He retains Aynsley Dunbar on drums and George Duke on keyboards, but this is notably his first album in quite some time without Ian Underwood. If not for some contributions from Don Preston, this would have no original Mothers on it at all.
This album kicks off another big time of transition for Zappa. The era that is coming will be among his most commercially successful and, in my opinion, artistically excellent. This particular album doesn’t quite hit either of those categories, but it’s a solid record of good Zappa, so I’m not complaining.
My copy is an original on Bizarre and could use a condition upgrade if I ever find one.

Album Review: Robby Krieger - The Ritual Begins at Sundown
After 10 years of studio silence, Robby Krieger returns with a killer Frank Zappa album.
The lede is not literal, of course. But the former Doors guitarist, in tandem with FZ alumni co-writer/co-producer Arthur Barrow, drummer Chad Wackerman, keyboardist Tommy Mars and horn players Jock Ellis and Sal Marquez, channel the head Mother shamelessly and with the chops to back it up on the Ritual Begins at Sundown.
Fine-tuned on stages before being transferred to the studio, the eight originals and two covers bear all sorts of Zappa hallmarks like odd time signatures, quirky tempo shifts and an overarching unconventional quality that keep them interesting over repeated spins.
Recalling the jazzy, instrumental stylings of 1982’s Versions, Krieger even plays like Zappa, taking occasional detours into Jeremy Spencer territory on the languid “Slide Home” and soaring like David Gilmour on his recasting of the Doors’ “Yes, the River Knows.”
But even without a carbon copy of “Chunga’s Revenge,” it would be hard to call the Ritual Begins at Sundown anything but an homage to Zappa, something Krieger and his bandmates seem to allude to on the opening track, when the LP’s only words, also the song’s title - What was that? - pop out of the speakers.
It wasn’t Zappa. But the Ritual Begins at Sundown sure sounds like him.
Grade card: Robby Krieger - The Ritual Begins at Sundown - A-

So for funsies I compiled a list of books I want to read for the second half of the 2020. This is all wishful thinking because in a normal year I read about 25 books and this is enough reading for like two years. The funnest part is going to be when I start deviating from this list and ruining my chances of at least reading half of the books on the list. Also, I keep wanting to add more books, it’s the problem with being a slow and distracted bookworm. Too many books, so little focus.
Here’s the list with minimum organization:
Adult
The Deep by Rivers Solomon
Middlegame by Seanan McGuire
Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant
Jade War by Fonda Lee
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Vengeful by V. E. Schwab
A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

Location: The Odeum Expo Center in Villa Park, Illinois.
Attendance: 6,000.
Commentary: Joey Styles and Cyrus.

2. Jazz defeated Tom Marquez via disqualification.

5. Justin Credible (with Jason) defeated Sabu (with Bill Alfonso).
6. Three-Way Dance for the ECW World Heavyweight Championship: Mike Awesome (with Judge Jeff Jones) defeated Taz (champion) and Masato Tanaka to win the title.
7. ECW Tag Team Championship Match: Raven and Tommy Dreamer (champions, with Francine) defeated Rhyno and Steve Corino (with Jack Victory).
8. ECW Television Championship Match: Rob Van Dam (champion, with Bill Alfonso) defeated Balls Mahoney.
My Review
Anarchy Rulz ‘99 takes place at a noteworthy point in ECW history. The promotion launched a cable show on TNN a month before the event. Normally this would be a cause for celebration, a major accomplishment for such a renegade promotion that persisted in the war between the WWF and WCW. However, ECW’s relationship with TNN was rocky from the start and its downfall would be one of the key components in hastening the promotion’s demise. They were also soon to lose its reigning heavyweight champion Taz to the WWF, who they’d been banking on to be a featured star on the TNN show. Stranger days were definitely ahead.
Perhaps reflective of the time period, the show itself is all over the place. It’s enjoyable enough, but there’s a lot of strange booking that totally loses me. It probably doesn’t help that I didn’t really watch ECW in its prime. A lot of it is presented to me completely removed from the context. Brawls transition into matches, matches unravel into brawls. It’s all pretty jarring to watch if you’re more familiar with the structure of, say, your typical WCW or WWF pay-per-view of the time. It also probably doesn’t help that ECW pay-per-views tend to not reveal a whole lot of backstory to the matches on the card. There are some scraps you can piece together in regards to the storylines of the time, but don’t expect the cinematic hype packages of your average WWE production that’ll help clue you in.
As for what works, I enjoy the opener and the two three-way dances quite a bit. The three-way for the ECW World Heavyweight Championship makes the bold choice to write out Taz minutes in, which results in us getting a taste of the Mike Awesome/Masato Tanka feud that continues to receive heaps of praise to this day. Amazingly though, in the trend of strange booking on this show, it doesn’t close out the night. The show lingers on for another hour or so, instead ending with a TV title match to showcase Rob Van Dam. It’s not a bad match or anything, but it can’t help but feel like a flat way to end things.
What really jumps out at me watching this show is that ECW seems to be peaking in terms of popularity and production values. From a commercial perspective, this is one of the most successful shows in the promotion’s history, especially in terms of attendance. The Odeum Expo Center may not be the grandest venue in the world, but it’s a major upgrade from the hole-in-the-wall venues of yore. ECW’s production always looked rough, and the promotion always prided itself on that, but things look much more polished by this point. We’re getting a product that still looks gritty as hell without it seeming they only have a budget of five dollars.
Overall, Anarchy Rulz ’99 sees ECW reaching some serious highs, with a feeling that things are soon to fall apart. There’s plenty of anarchy, and some of it is pretty fun, but there are definitely points where you’ll wish for a bit more order.
My Random Notes
So Cyrus decides to prove he’s brilliant and intellectually superior to everyone by culturally appropriating the bindi. Do I have that right?
Sad sign of the times: Simon Diamond cuts a promo about how women are only good for T&A and the crowd agrees.
I don’t think I’m breaking any new ground here by noting, but it’s amazing how often ECW equates “being extreme” with “being misogynistic and homophobic.” None of this shocks me, mind you, but it’s nonetheless aged appallingly. All the jabs thrown at Dawn Marie in the opening bout alone tells you everything you need to know. Also, how many times does the crowd chant about a male wrestler sucking dick?
Nova is dressed like he’s ready to joust for legions of tourists at the Excalibur Resort in Las Vegas. Tony DeVito, meanwhile, is dressed like he just finished some yard work around the house.
Amazing how many guys here would make up WWE’s mid card in the early to mid ‘00s. Super Crazy vs. Nunzio is definitely something that happened on Velocity once or twice. I don’t have proof, but I’m convinced it happened.
Who the fuck is Johnny Smith? Who the fuck is Judge Jeff Jones? Who the fuck is Tom Marquez?
I always roll my eyes at ECW using insider terms like “heat” or “getting over” or some shit. I’m sure it’s probably something that was seen as clever or edgy back in ’99, but it only makes me think about the cringe-worthy worked shoot garbage Vince Russo loves.
Slightly off-topic, but all the talk about ECW on TNN got me thinking about Roller Jam, which is a show I thought I just imagined but am happy to know it was real. I dare you to check it out. You’ll never dog the acting in professional wrestling ever again.

For the week of 18 March 2019
Quick Bits:
Aquaman #46 is the penultimate chapter of “Unspoken Water”, as “Andy” and Caille confront Namma. I love the world-building that Kelly Sue DeConnick is doing here, enriching DC’s godly pantheons greatly, and I swear that Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, and Sunny Gho are somehow getting better with each subsequent issue. Epic storytelling.

Avengers #17 concludes the war of the vampires from Jason Aaron, David Marquez, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit. It’s as gloriously over-the-top as the entire story-arc and it sets up a new status quo for the Winter Guard as well as a few other surprises. The art from Marquez and Arciniega is glorious.

Tumblr media
Avengers: No Road Home #6 gives an extra-sized issue for Conan and Scarlet Witch’s adventure from Jim Zub, Al Ewing, Mark Waid, Sean Izaakse, Jay David Ramos, Marcio Menyz, and Cory Petit. It works well as a Conan story with monsters and magic, while still giving a bit of insight as to what horrors are still occurring on the traditional 616-side.

Tumblr media
Batman #67 is almost dialogue-free, leaving the bulk of the storytelling up to the art and sound effects from Lee Weeks, Jorge Fornés, Lovern Kindzierski, and Clayton Cowles. It’s damn good.

Tumblr media
Black Badge #8 gives some rare insight into who the kids really are as Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins, Hilary Jenkins, and Jim Campbell dive into observational reports from the White Badges. I absolutely love the layers to the characters, as the black ops, highly secretive world that they operate in reveals even more secrets.

BPRD: The Devil You Know #14 is the penultimate chapter in the Hellboy saga that began 25 years ago. Like every issue of “Ragna Rok”, there are some goodbyes here, checking in on numerous characters throughout the story’s history, and the continued confrontation between Hellboy, Abe, & Liz and Rasputin. This one hurts, a lot. Beautifully depicted by Laurence Campbell and Dave Stewart.

Captain Marvel #3 reveals Som’s secrets while Carol tries to build an army out of the survivors. This one’s definitely a bit of a breather as the team works out a plan to take on Nuclear Man. There’s some nice character building with Carol, Hazmat, She-Hulk, and Echo. Carmen Carnero, with colours from Tamra Bonvillain, also continues to impress.

Tumblr media
Criminal #3 concludes the two-part “Bad Weekend” arc. I’m really quite liking how Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Jacob Phillips are approaching this series, telling a variety of tale throughout time, building up existing and new characters, and really giving depth to the world.

Dark Red #1 is a great debut from Tim Seeley, Corin Howell, Mark Englert, and Marshall Dillon exploring the concept of the American vampire, like True Blood, American Vampire, or Redneck. It goes a little bit simpler diving into the ordinary, rural, service sector life of Chip the vampire, which makes for the twist in the plot more intriguing.

Electric Warriors #5 pulls out some more surprises in this penultimate chapter. Steve Orlando, Travel Foreman, Javi Fernandez, Richard Friend, Hi-Fi, and Travis Lanham spark the rebellion here setting up a cliffhanger for a very interesting conclusion.

Farmhand #6 returns from its break, weirder than ever. Amidst the EPA crawling down Jed’s labs throat trying to figure out what happened with the weird side effects and bizarre spread, Jedediah, Zeke, Riley, and Mikhail go fishing. Odd, that. Wonderfully bizarre story and art as always from Rob Guillory, Taylor Wells, and Kody Chamberlain.

Guardians of the Galaxy #3 advances “The Final Gauntlet” from Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw, Marte Gracia, and Cory Petit as Starfox’s Dark Guardians continue to try to beat Gamora’s location out of people and the real Guardians try to convince Star-Lord to help protect her. Very nice bits of humour, phenomenal artwork, some interesting developments regarding Wraith and Knull, and I’m really getting the impression that the “new Thanos” is the scarred and broken Starfox.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Immortal Hulk #15 is more brilliance from Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy José, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit. This arc definitely seems to be focused on Hulk’s old friends and family, with this issue featuring Doc Samson, and it’s a wonderful exploration of how Samson is alive again and an analysis on who this Hulk happens to be.

Tumblr media
Incursion #2 feels even more epic than the first issue as Gilad turns to Doctor Mirage for assistance, then sets out on a quest through the Deadside. Andy Diggle, Alex Paknadel, Doug Braithwaite, Diego Rodriguez, and Marshall Dillon are crafting what feels like one of the next foundation stones for the future of the Valiant universe. With some of the best art I’ve seen from Braithwaite and Rodriguez.

Infinity 8 #10 begins the fourth cycle, “Symbolic Guerrilla”, adding Kris and Martin Trystram to the creative mix, to introduce us to undercover agent Patty Stardust, stage manager to the Symbolic Guerrillas band, as she gets tapped to try to figure out what’s causing the ship’s destruction and try to stop it. Absolutely love the art from Trystram.

Invisible Kingdom #1 is gorgeous. I’m a huge fan of Christian Ward’s artwork and this is incredible. Beautiful use of colour, fascinating character and architecture designs, interesting layouts, delivering a sense of the alien and the familiar at the same time. Between Ward’s art and G. Willow Wilson’s concepts and character building, this feels like they’ve put a lot of thought into world building and it pays off in what feels like a living, breathing society and culture in this first issue. Also a nice mix of “futuristic” and normal lettering from Sal Cipriano that aids nicely in setting the tone and atmosphere for the story. This is an auspicious debut and looks like it should be another hit for Berger Books.

Justice League #20 continues “The Sixth Dimension” from Scott Snyder, Jorge Jimenez, Alejandro Sánchez, and Tom Napolitano. The artwork from Jimenez and Sánchez is worth the price of admission alone, this is an incredibly beautiful looking book.

Lazarus: Risen #1 is the very welcome return of the series from Greg Rucka, Michael Lark, Tyler Boss, Santi Arcas, and Simon Bowland in its new double-sized quarterly format, which also includes a short story from Lilah Sturges, some RPG content from Crystal Frasier, and other assorted backmatter. It’s good. Damn good. Easing us back into the conflict of the world as Johanna Carlyle starts taking care of the family’s problems as more conflict and complications begin to arise. Incredible artwork from Lark, Boss, and Arcas.

Meet the Skrulls #2 continues to be highly entertaining as the family enacts some of their plans and Carl certainly isn’t going to win any father of the year awards. Niko Henrichon’s artwork is a huge plus for the story, nicely balancing the normal world, the alien nature of the Skrulls, and some neat monster designs to boot.

Middlewest #5 gives us a bit of a look back at how much of an abusive asshole Abel’s father is, while in the present Abel makes an arrangement with the carnival folks. Jorge Corona and Jean-Francois Beaulieu continue to make this one of the most visually interesting series running.
| Published by Image
Tumblr media
Naomi #3 presents a number of revelations about some of the characters, including Naomi’s mom acting like a savage mama bear, but not exactly the revelations you’d expect. Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker are still taking it a bit slow as to what exactly is going on with Naomi herself, instead building up the characters around her (part of me wonders if she’s actually a Monitor). Also, Jamal Campbell’s artwork remains stunning, truly beautiful work.

Outpost Zero #8 takes us out onto the ice to show what happened when the drill team uncovered the dome, then spends the rest of the issue dealing with the ramifications of that, making the residents of Outpost Zero even more reluctant to go outside to do anything to protect themselves, and the kids still don’t know what to make of what they say. This is kind of a taking stock issue, with the characters trying to figure out next steps again.

Pearl #7 returns with a new arc from Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Gaydos, and Dave Sharpe, with Pearl “on the run” from Mr. Miike, the Endo Twins, and a new player in the FBI’s Yuko Masako. This is developing more of Bendis’ dialogue tics as time goes by, but they’re largely forgiven for just how incredible Gaydos’ artwork is.

Sparrowhawk #5 concludes what has been an excellent fantasy adventure from Delilah S. Dawson, Matias Basla, Rebecca Nalty, and Jim Campbell with the confrontation between a fully-changed Artemisia and the faerie queen. It’s great, with some interesting ramifications in all of what Artemisia has lost in her quest to return home for revenge. Great artwork from Basla and Nalty.

Spider-Man: Life Story #1 is off to an interesting start from Chip Zdarsky, Mark Bagley, John Dell, Frank D’Armata, and Travis Lanham. It’s an introspective look at Peter Parker’s life, with some key moments, starting off in the ‘60s deeply tied to then-current events. Some of the best art from Bagley I’ve seen in a while, really nice stuff.

Tumblr media
Stronghold #2 continues the impressive world-building from Phil Hester, Ryan Kelly, Dee Cunniffe, and Simon Bowland. We’re introduced this issue to the opposite side in The Adversary and his minions, while the “good” of the Stronghold is put into question and Michael continues to wrestle with who and what he is. Great character work from Hester accompanied by some terrific art from Kelly and Cunniffe.

Teen Titans #28 is part one of the “Terminus Agenda” crossover with Deathstroke and it kicks off with a bang. Damian’s been travelling down a potentially dark and dangerous road for awhile and it looks like it may be coming to a head with this arc. Amazing action artwork from Bernard Chang and Marcelo Maiolo as the Teen Titans and Deathstroke clash.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #92 delves into the negotiations of transfer of power of the Foot Clan to Karai in earnest, delivering some interesting complications to the story that look like they’re going to have significant ramifications. Michael Dialynas, with colours from Ronda Pattison, consistently provides some of the best depictions of the Turtles and the Mutanimals.

Thor #11 serves as a counterpoint to last issue’s conflict with Odin, as Thor is aided by his step-mother, Freyja, on the even of The War of the Realms. Beautiful guest art from Lee Garbett and Antonia Fabela.

Tumblr media
Venom #12 is another big issue. With art from Joshua Cassara and Rain Beredo, we get more insight into Eddie’s son and a startling development, even after last issue, regarding the symbiote. Donny Cates and the entire creative team are really going full-bore in developing compelling additions to Venom’s mythos.

The Warning #5 feels like one of the first major payoffs for sticking with the story. Edward Laroche has been giving this a real slowburn, making it decidedly feel like chapters and snippets from a work that should probably be read at once. They've been good, but not always entirely satisfying as monthly comics. The set-up last issue and the incendiary contact this issue, though, have really lit a fire to the action.

West Coast Avengers #9 is kind of bittersweet. It’s another fun issue, full of humour, great character development, and wonderful artwork--from Kelly Thompson, Gang Hyuk Lim, Tríona Farrell, and Joe Caramagna--but it’s the second-to-last issue. I feel like the industry needs more of these types of upbeat superhero series, not less. Especially for Jeff the Land Shark puppy.

X-O Manowar #25 is largely all-battle between the bounty hunters and Aric & Schon from Matt Kindt, Tomás Giorello, Diego Rodriguez, and Dave Sharpe. Kindt gets in some nice character moments between Aric and Schon, but you're going to be wanting to pick this up for more gorgeous artwork from Giorello and Rodriguez.
