Church Boy-Cruel

"Travis, I don't mean this in... that way, but I love you." I admitted. "You do?" he asked. "I mean, yea." I choked out. "I... love you too, Sally Face..." he retorted, letting tears fall from his face. I sent everyone else out of the room and grabbed my mask and buckled it. "Sal, can you not wear that around me?" he asked, tired. "Travis..." I muttered. "Sure..." I obliged. 

Unbuckling my mask and holding it in my hand, I stared down at Travis. His hair was messy and disheveled. His olive skin was soft and bruised, band-aids covering what he considered imperfections. His amber eyes were scarred with remnants of guilt, sadness, and disappointment. 

"You ready to go?" I ask. "Yea..." he answered, faking a smile to reassure me. "C'mon." I said, reaching my hand down for him to grab. 

Travis' POV:

I grabbed onto his hand and pulled myself up. I needed a shower; I feel disgusting and dirty. "Thanks, Sally." I muttered, letting go of his hand. "Of course, Trav." he said, smiling sweetly. 

*Time Skip*

We got back to the apartment; Sal drove because he was the only sober one. Once we arrived, I walked into Sal's room with incredible speed. We quietly snuck back into his room and he let me change into some of his clothes so he could wash mine and I could wear them home. 

Sal's POV:

I grabbed him some clothes that were big on me. He changed and I went down to the basement with our clothes. I dug out David's because he won't, and put mine and Travis' in. I started it and looked through the Lost and Found for a second. 

I found this pretty necklace. It was a cross. "Megan..." I muttered, knowing that I needed to visit her soon. I grabbed it up and put it around my neck. It's safer on my neck than my pocket, if it was in there, I'd probably lose it. 

So, I went back to my room. Travis was in the bathroom and had locked the door. "You okay in there?" I called. "Yea! I'm fine!" he answered, happiness lacing his voice. "You sure?" I asked again, just wanting to make sure. "I'm fine, Sal." he reassured. "Just gonna get a shower, I feel... dirty..." he said, disgust hinting in his voice. 

"Alright, be quick." I suggested, walking to my bed and plopping down. The shower turned on and the metal hooks that hold up our shower curtain rattled. I held Gizmo for a while, petting his soft fur as his purrs vibrated my chest.

Travis' POV:

I told Sal I was going to get a shower. I turned on the water and let it get to the right temperature before stepping in. He told me to be quick, so I planned to just...wash up.

I stepped in and felt amazing as the hot water hit my sore body. Today had been a nightmare. Except now, I couldn't escape by waking up or reminding myself that it was a dream and all in my head. No, this was real and what had happened today could never be taken back. 

Never. 

I looked down at my body. I looked at the little pieces of fat that everyone swore wasn't there, the way my legs looked, and how I looked as a whole. I grabbed a washrag and started viciously scrubbing my body, especially where he touched. I washed my hair with a shampoo that smelled like Sal does.

It reminded me of him.

I took in the scent, scrubbing my scalp as my hair stuck to my forehead. 

*Time Skip*

I stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around my waist. Looking around the bathroom, I noticed that I hadn't brought my clothes. I walked out of the bathroom and into Sal's. "Hey, Sal. Forgot my clothes." I informed him, grabbing the clothes off his bed and readjusting my towel because it felt a little loose. 

"Oh! Hey, Trav!" Sal said, quickly sitting up and grabbing his bedsheets. "Are you okay?" I ask, watching as his ears and neck turned bright pink. "Mhm!" he assured, giving me a thumbs up as his eyes darted all over my body. "Okay..." I said, walking back to the bathroom. 

Sal's POV:

I was about to lie down when my door creaked open, and I heard Travis' voice. "Hey, Sal. Forgot my clothes." he informed, grabbing the clothes off my bed. He readjusted his towel and I lost my shit. His hair was sticking to his face and dripping water all down his chest. "Oh! Hey, Trav!" I responded, trying not to make my nervousness too obvious. "Are you okay?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Mhm!" I reassured, taking in every part of him I could. 

"Okay..." he said, smirking and walking out. 

The scene replayed in my head, and I mentally scolded myself for being so weird. His blonde hair was shiny, and his stomach was skinny. I could see his defined collarbone and a minimal amount of his ribs. His arms were scrawny yet muscular. I could see where his body dipped into the spots only meant for that special someone and it drove me crazy knowing that the only thing separating me and it was a thin piece of cloth. 

My heart may have skipped a few beats when he walked in.

He went back to the bathroom and returned a few minutes later in his clothes. He was wearing a tight white T-shirt and some basketball shorts that I hadn't grown into yet; I gave him a pair of pink fuzzy socks I always wore when it was cold. "You ready for bed yet?" I ask, crawling into the covers and burying my face into the pillow. "Yea, see you in the morning." he said, walking out of my room. 

"Where are you going?" I ask, sitting up quickly. "The couch?" he answered, his words coming out as more of a question than a statement. "Just sleep in here. I'll sleep on the couch." I offered. "No, it's fine." he assured. "Or..." I started, wanting to just shrug off the idea altogether. "Or what?" he asked, intrigued. "Or we could just sleep together..." I suggested. 

"I guess." he obliged, walking to the bed and climbing in next to me. Before I lay down, I made sure that I had set my alarm. Once I was sure I had, I lay down and pulled the covers over myself. Travis was facing me, but he had his eyes closed and his lips slightly parted. 

"Sal, are you still awake?" Travis whispered, slightly opening his eyes. "I am, yea." I whispered back. "Can I talk to you?" he muttered, averting his eyes. "Of course, Trav. You don't have to ask." I assured, smiling sweetly at him. "Why..." he started. 

"Why is cupid so cruel?"

1. Are you named after anyone? nope :)

2. When was the last time you cried? i'm not sure actually, but definitely within the last 24h. i cry very easily

3. Do you have kids? noooo. i'd say i'm too young but actually i'm not all that far off from how old my mum was jeez... i don't exactly plan on following her lead in that though, she was quite young and atm i don't ever plan on having kids. i don't think i'd be a very good parent and i don't think i'll ever be ready to make a commitment that big.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? i do sometimes but i'm not a very dry type of sarcastic, i usually over-exaggerate to extremes

5. What sports do you play/have you played? i played netball as a kid but i'm not very sporty... i also played a bit of volleyball in hs

6. What’s the first thing you notice about other people? i'm not sure honestly. just, their appearance i guess? i have a bad habit of judging people very quickly based on their appearance and other similarly shallow factors, so i guess the first thing i "notice" is just whatever category i put them in inside of my head

7. Scary movies or happy endings? these are two entirely seperate things, but in general my favourite movies have ambiguous or bittersweet endings so probably scary movies? i don't watch a lot of horror because i prioritise an impactful story over anything else and i don't like realistic scary stories, but i like general scary atmospheres and some of my favourite pieces of media are horror (donnie darko, the haunting of hill house)

8. Any special talents? not really? idk, there are things i'm good at, but not any interesting talents that come to mind

9. Where were you born? australia. that's the most specific you're getting sorry

10. What are your hobbies? doomscrolling, listening to pretentious music, consuming + talking about media, reading/writing fanfic, drawing, and... not much else really lol. i don't do much, and there are more things i'd like to do but i barely have time to do the hobbies i already have lmao. maybe someday i'll finally learn guitar...

11. Do you have any pets? none of my own but sue me i still think of the family pets as my pets, so two dogs and three cats :)

12. All-time fave piece of media? this is an insane question but okay uhh. i seriously don't know if i can choose... i think i have to say the social network, it's my favourite movie. normal people by sally rooney is close behind (the book, i haven't seen the show yet)

13. Fave subject in school? i pretty much hated everything until i understood what was going on and then i loved it until i didn't again, rinse and repeat. but probably economics or english lit!

14. Dream job? realistically, i'm on track to becoming something in finance, probably a financial advisor or an accountant of some kind. that's kind of my "dream" field because i've been set on it since i was like 13/14, and i enjoy it! but it's definitely a compromise between enjoyment and money. for a real dream job? if i had my way i'd be a uhh professional analytical thought haver. thesis statement writer, perhaps. unfortunately it seems like there is no demand for that kind of career so i will just stick with finance LMAO

Trying to organize my ask notebook better since I've run out of space under general fandom asks and I would like to know what fandoms you are in so I can ask the correct people about the correct fandoms.

I think my main ones are Bagginshield/The Hobbit, Sherlock/Johnlock, Dragon Age Inquisition, {Pippin/Faramir Merry/Eowyn}/The Lord of the Rings and I dip my toes in a few that I currently can't remember but ones I don't engage in canon at all are Good Omens but only for Crowley/Azirapheal ship, Stranger Things but only for Steve/Eddie ship, The Witcher but only for Geralt/Jaskier things and Ladybug and Cat Noir but only for Adrinette .

Also do you like getting asks that are or include story ideas or snippets?

OH GOSH OH GOSH OKAY, I'm actually part of a lot of fandoms!!! I'm not very active in a lot of them these days but I LOVE asks about them. My main active ones I either participate in or lurk in currently (with my preferred ship in the brackets):

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Katara / Zuko. I'm STILL SALTY that it was literally RIGHT THERE and the much better ship and they still went with the boringest one)

Assassin's Creed Series, more the modern era RPG games but I love pretty much all of them. My fave one is Black Flag, though. I loved it so much.

Stitch is my favourite Disney character of all time, and Maleficent is my favourite Disney Villain.

My oldest fandom is the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom. There was a time I had to play every Sonic game ever made, until they got bad for awhile. I participated in the fandom when I was in my teens and early 20s, and wrote a fairly popular fanfic series based on the Sat AM series (which I argue is still the best Sonic TV show ever, and it's Sonic/Sally forever for me, I don't like Amy Rose at all). My fave character from the games is Shadow though, followed by Knuckles and then Sonic LOL.

Kingdom Hearts Series is my fave video game series of all time, followed by Skyrim, then Assassin's Creed. I AM that idiot who will buy all the games of these series Day One. I love the worldbuilding in all three of these series and they're ripe for AUs.

I Love the MCU, despite its flaws. I usually see every single Marvel movie or show when they come out. Aside from the MCU fandoms listed above, my other faves are Antman 1 and 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 1, Avengers Endgame, Doctor Strange, Hawkeye, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Fruits Basket (Kyo / Tohru). I actually love the revamped 2019 series, as it follows the manga and it was completed.

Ranma 1/2 (Ryoga / Akane) is my fave anime though. The manga is really good, I read the whole thing in one night on one of those translation sites.

I also love Dragon Age: Inquisition!! Not super familiar with much of the lore since I've only played it once, but I loved it. The world was so interesting and I want to play The Vielguard, though I might wait until it goes on sale since it's not a must-play at the moment for me.

There's SO MANY MORE I could add, HONESTLY, but I'll be here forever listing shows and nostalgia that still makes me SO happy. I LOVE talking about fandoms so I love getting these kind of asks! I can write more if you'd like LOL.

AND to answer your final question, YES, LOVE THEM. I add them to my 'writing prompts' tag for my or others' reference if a spark of something comes to me, AND I love getting story snippets because even if they aren't, they feel like little gifts for me, you know? I'm going to go with the little verse of Wearing Your Wounds and Sanctuary because they're the Dalton Ranch fics, and they have OCs.  For Jack's mom, I think Sally Field, yes?  For Jack's sister Shelly, I think I'd cast Rachel Griffiths (from Brothers & Sisters), her husband Joe could be Ian Bohen (from Yellowstone & Teen Wolf), and I have no idea about the kids.  I used to have favorite actor kids, but they've all grown up!

💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?

I answered this one for pluto, but I'll give you another one because I don't just have one.  The Care & Feeding of MacAndJack is one of my favorites.  It's an outsider POV (via Annie, my fave nurse), and I had a lot of fun writing someone else's thoughts on Mac and Jack and their partnership. 

💛 What is the most impactful lesson you’ve learned about writing?

Writing is a great outlet for feelings.  Stories are some of the oldest ways to communicate and work through things, and they can evoke all the emotions.  Sometimes, you want to feel like you're part of the team.  Sometimes, you need to live vicariously through someone else's comfort.  Sometimes, you need to work through pain by putting it on a fictional character.  There have been times that I've cried my way through writing a story, but I've felt better afterwards.

Are there couples like dair that you know of?

Do you mean in real life? Because that’s classified. Also, not really. That kind of insanity only exists in fiction.

Fictionally though…I can think of many. I think that’s why my affection for dair is so enduring, it ticks so many of my ship boxes for me, so let’s dive in, on a tour of liz’s fave romantic ships

Let’s start with the classics.

The original romcom couple: beatrice x benedick of shakespeare’s much ado about nothing. They have everything: eviscerating banter, guy being an absolute simp for his beloved. Nads has written about it before.

And of course, the austenites: Darcy x Lizzie and Knightley x Emma are big ones, and I think there’s definite vibes with Wentworth x Anne too.

the Blueprints are When Harry Met Sally and Summer x Seth (and tbh you could probs throw Holly Golightly and Paul Varjak and Tracy Lord and Mike Connor — I would have picked jimmy stewart tbh. rip to katharine hepburn but I’m different. )

Sidebar: Oh but you know who knows SO much about Philadelphia Story and all romcomedy bc they’ve written academically on the subject? tumblr user scabopolis!—somewhere, mayhaps a fic comment?—they told me that that script was written with the intention of the ending being punitive for the heroine. if hepburn and the writer weren’t combating early 20th century misogyny, would the play and subsequent film come to a different conclusion???

And I mean…I already made this post about the parallels with Japril but REALLY: the different backgrounds—one rich one middle class; workplace romance; adversaries to best friends to lovers; shared trauma through the loss of a child; RUNAWAY BRIDE; mutual pining; backdoor endgame which I know the gg revival will not give me but a girl can dream

Nads and I have discussed at length how dair coded the Emily Henry couples Gus x January & Charlie x Nora are. And Henry’s talked about how inspired all her work is by Nora Ephron, so. Mutual blueprints (Poppy x Alex have a best friends to lovers that is DELICIOUS but the characters themselves aren’t that similar to dan and blair on that level)

Speaking of mutual blueprints, the mindy project’s mindy x danny have a GREAT workplace enemies to lovers arc in the first couple seasons…the second half of the show roughens them up a bit. (and danny castellano is SUCH a different daniel than our girl dan humphrey)

And in the realm of “stop being so mean to me or I swear to god I’m gonna fall in love with you” allow me to talk a bit about one of my favorite ships of all time: luke and mara jade skywalker.

Okay so, in the extended star wars universe; in the novels that were written BEFORE the new trilogy (and before the prequel trilogy in some cases), these published fanfic pulp scifi books introduced this character, mara jade. She was the personal assassin and fixer for the emperor, and when he was killed, she was like “I have to get revenge” so of course she makes it her life mission to destory luke skywalker. And then of course they get thrown into a few impossible situations where they have to team up and she discovers that actually she doesn’t hate him which of course makes her furious, and then after a couple more teamups she realizes she likes him, how horrifying, then after luke convinces mara to train as a jedi in between smuggling deals she realizes she’s in LOVE with him?! while luke has been down bad since the first assassination attempt they are literally those posts that go “she thinks they’re sworn enemies but he is just some guy with a crush on her” and “she stops trying to kill him and honestly he’s a little disappointed. star wars sequels committed many sins but the original one was cutting out my girl mara jade skywalker.

I have discussed at length with S (and even written fic) on the dair-codedness of amy and jonah from superstore.

Speaking of S, she also made me watch Hart of Dixie and whilst the main couple zoe x wade have a chaotic adversarial romance that may speak to dair, the true dair of the show, the couple that came late in the game, but looking back seems like they should have belonged together all this time (I caught Vibes in s2 but that’s neither here nor there): ANNABETH X GEORGE! They have a long history of mutual disinterest/only tolerating each other for the sake of the mutual love of their life, Lemon, and then after a couple heartbreaks and a long winding road, they fall for each other! and Lemon is like the captain of their ship—it’s both Dair and the resolution the blair x serena x dan triangle deserved!

And in terms of childhood love vs the love you grow into have this whole fic verse that expands upon the dair & amy x laurie parallels

Facts about my Helluva boss au, for my up coming fanfic!!

Moxxie and blitzo met when blitz was still working for the circus

At their wedding, it was the day after they’d both adopted loona, so she was very passive aggressively throwing flower petals

Moxxie always chooses the movie, but every Saturday night he deliberately puts on blitzo’s fave

Blitz finds it difficult to express emotion, so he shows his love for Mox by always paying for dinner, buying him gifts, and letting Moxxie pick the movie

Loona took longer to warm up to Mox than blitz, but she eventually did after they had a heart to heart after her first break up.

Millie still works for I.M.P, and is a central character, but joined a little later. Moxxie is her best friend and she’s very protective of him as is he with her.

Sallie may joined the team thanks to her sister’s badgering, and is their best hand to hand combat fighter.

The cherubs are also reoccurring characters

Stolas’s book got stolen by blitz, and after finding out why, stolas is simply helping because he finds what the imps are doing cute.

Heaven gets explored in more ways then one!

An overlord takes a real interest in I.M.P, maybe dangerously so.

last movie: tragically unfortunately it was austin powers goldmember. a friend needed to watch it for reasons and i was having a case of the sads so she came over and we watched it together. i actually remember getting my mom to take me to see it in theaters and even as a child being like “ok lots of toilet humor....” however it does have both britney spears AND beyoncé in it which is pretty iconic

sweet/spicy/savory: hmmmmmmm for breakfast, savory. for snackies, sweet. 

currently working on: i’ve got a bunch of wips right now. lots of notes for i carry it in mine, the first lil bits of my uptown girls au, part of a jon pov scene for princess diaries au, part of a jon pov scene for overboard au, a lil extra so far in that alayne/jon vignette, a bit of a jily when harry met sally au scene that will probs never make it out of my group chat, aaaaaaaaaand some stranger things stuff even that will possibly never make it out of my google docs. lots going on!!!!! in the google docs!!!!!! i’ve got like 12 different google docs open in another window rn which is much more than usual lmao but i haven’t super focused in on any one particular thing

i did! it was a rly small goal, just 12 books, one for each month. but it helped me get back into the habit of reading for pleasure after getting really burnt out studying literature at uni. but i surpassed my goal by 2 books :3

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden! I definitely forgot how beautiful graphic novels can be, I loved them as a kid and then kinda just forgot. Really really glad I read it!

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez :,) I’m so sorry I just didn’t vibe with it. I might try again in a few years but, as of now, it’s not for me

did you reread any old faves? If so, which one was your favourite?

Kind of? I read and heavily annotated Fleabag: The Scriptures and since I’ve seen the show a billion times it was similar to a reread :)

did you dnf any books?

I didddd… I feel bad abt this but Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas.. I was reading it on my phone, which probably added to the problem since I prefer reading in print? But idk the writing style was not… captivating. Sorta read like a fanfic in places, not that fanfics can’t be incredible but there’s a specific writing style that a lot of them use and I got those vibes while reading this book.

People who hate on Astoria Greengrass just because she is Draco’s wife annoys me (To be fair,most of them are 11 year old-horny kids,they wish they were her.)

Like dude-I have that minimum sympathy for Draco just because he is Astoria’s husband/Scorpius’s father.(TCC!Draco in general)

She is an amazing woman who deserved so much better.She was kind,thoughtfull,loving,full of light and a rebel.She was coming from a privileged,pure blood supremacist family and she was educated enough to abandon those wiews after war and she was open about it.

She wanted Draco to have Scorpius because she didnt want him to be alone after her death while knowing having a kid will only make her life shorter.This melts my heart.

When the fanfics make her out to be this evil girl who rapes Draco with love potions,tries to steal Draco from OC/Harry/Hermione/YN,bullies everyone,I roll my eyes so hard and say”İs this the same Astoria who believes the sweets helps people to make friends😂?”

Just use Pansy.She would do that %100.Or Daphne Greengrass (I like her headcanon charecter but canonically we dont know anything about her.)Or Tracey Davis.Or Millicent Bulstrode.Or Sally Ann Perks.Or Flora Carrow.Or Hestia Carrow.Stop trashing Astoria.

The fact that she is not on the books won’t change the impact she had on your fave.

I still think Astoria deserved better than Draco but I love Drastoria.

But honestly,Drastoria’s whole relationship made me so much more tolerant towards Draco.

mid-year book freakout

I will preface this by saying I spent a lot of this year rereading Georgette Heyer’s entire romance canon, then had a fanfic binge as a lockdown 3.0 treat. I’m not including rereads. I reread lots of other faves too (The Starless Sea, The Winternight trilogy, the entire Grishaverse). As for the rest I honestly can’t remember everything I’ve read this year so this is based on the past couple of months really. 

Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2021? Ummm probably The Horseman by Tim Pears (but I say that based on reading the whole trilogy together). Very richly pastoral. Also H is for Hawk  

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2021? I’m going to say Rule of Wolves because I did love it, although I thought it felt a bit rushed 

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? Jennifer Saint's Ariadne but I’m scared it won’t live up to a Madeline Miller, and Mister Monday by Maggie Stiefvater, The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley

Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2021?  maybe Beautiful World, Where Are You, Sally Rooney 

Biggest Disappointment? Not sure! I loved everything about The Night Circus which I finally read, except the ending did feel a little hollow? 

Biggest Surprise? Latitudes of Longing by Shubhangi Swarup, which I am reading now, and which is just glorious

Any Reylo fic recs?

i’ve actually wanted to do a big fic rec for a while, so this is the perfect opportunity! 

i’ve gathered a list of classic tropes and tried to pick one or two favorites for each! this is by no means a comprehensive list, and if you guys like this, i would be happy to do another edition later on! these are all mostly fluffy as that’s what i usually prefer, but as with most reylo fics there is a lot of explicit content, so please mind the ratings!

Best friends-to-lovers? i’ve been in love with you for ages (and i can’t seem to get it right) - akosmia (10K, T). when who you want is right under your nose, and not only can they give you everything you want, they want to. ben cares for rey without hope or agenda. 

Bleed Me Dry, I Don’t Mind - AttackoftheDarkCurses (12K, E). best friends to lovers from two perspectives. a little growing up together, a little university AU. they slip into love without even realizing.

Canonverse? chase all your cares away - LovesBitca8 (4K, E). ben defects to the resistance. rey loves his smile and is determined to get one out of him. 

Coffee shop? maybe i just wanna be yours - akosmia (13K, T). ben compulsively offers favors to rey’s friends. in return, they meddle. it’s a 5+1 (i am obsessed with those as you will come to find out).

Emotional hurt/comfort? thrilled by the still of your hand - akosmia (9K, T). canondivergent. ben is touch starved after… everything. rey helps. i cried multiple times, and i loved it.

Serotonin and Dopamine - pontmercy44 (28K, E). this is so unique. very realistic in the way that it shows the work that goes into a relationship. i won’t give away too much, but mental heath issues are integral to the plot, so be forewarned. 

Enemies-to-lovers? Left Handed Kisses - Ever-so-reylo (18K, E). a reylo classic. assistant district attorney vs criminal defense lawyer. hatefucking turns into something more.

Epistolary (including forms of communication)? Hanging on the Telephone - jeeno2 (11K, E). rey gets a sext from a wrong number. sure, she should ignore it and move on. but where’s the fun in that?

our love was meant to be (my love came back to me)  - BensCalligraphySet (3K, T). in this life, ben finds letters in a bottle from someone who seemed to know him in a previous one. the galaxy gives them another chance. 

Fake dating? Let Me Dream, Let Me Stay - Melusine11 (38K, E). rey backs herself into a lie and asks her coworker kylo to pretend to be her boyfriend at rose and finn’s wedding. they roadtrip, they share a bed, they eat at a punny restaurant. so much fun!

Roommates? Closer to Fine - jeeno2 (15K, E). pregnant rey needs a roommate and moves in with medical student ben. there’s a lot to be scared about, but they’re not alone. 

Someone You Love(d) - AttackoftheDarkCurses (39K, E). rey and prince!ben are college roommates. they end up spending break together with leia, han, breha, and padme. they claim to hate each other and misunderstandings ensue. so many tropes i can’t even list them. 

Flower shop/tattoo parlor? alderaan places - nymja (5K, T). a classic take on a classic trope. it’s valentine’s day!

Friends with benefits? Making Love Out of Nothing At All - LoveofEscapism (4K, E). ben will do anything rey asks. so hot, but full of emotion. 

Two to Tango - crossingwinter (6K, E). i love this one. absolutely nails the heart wrenching emotion of knowing you’ve made a mistake in the moment before you fix it.

Funny? First Order IT, Can I Get Your User ID? - krossartist (14K, T). witty banter and childish name calling with a small touch of hurt/comfort. adorable!

Harry Potter AU? the water smells like you - shruggyben (3K, G). every ship needs an HP ‘verse amortentia fic! feat. professor leia organa.

High school? The Buddy List - violethoure666 (23K, E). since reading it a few weeks ago, this has quickly become one of my favorites! if you miss the aughts this one's for you! AIM messenger drives the story. 

Medieval/Royalty? Tangled, but Unbroken - AttackoftheDarkCurses (20K, M). growing up together, star-crossed lovers, alderaanian hair braiding - what more could you want? my fave tag on this: uncle luke is a reylo.

Neighbors? Flux & Solder - angharabbit (23K, E). another one of my all time favorites. new neighbors ben and rey help each other with trauma. feels like a rainy day from the thunder through the rainbow. make sure you read the tags before reading this incredible work!

Office romance? Minus 1 - Ever-so-reylo (5K, E). rey sends a text to the wrong office IM number. rey doesn’t know who she’s texting, but friendship and… more develops.

keep calm and let HR handle it - hi_raeth (11K, T). another 5+1! ben is the CEO and rey is the HR director. coworkers to confidantes to lovers. super sweet.

Oneshot? spring will come again - prncesselene (8K, M). over the course of a year, rey’s life changes completely as she renovates padme amidala’s old greenhouse. 

Only one bed? under thy own life’s key - galvanator (23K, E). sexy with great emotional depth, but it’s the sequel trilogy gang that makes this stand out in the trope! makes me wish we got a post-TROS everyone-lives sitcom.

Romcom-inspired? if you’re ready comic get it - violethoure666 (28K, E). if You’ve Got Mail was with tumblr mutuals and a comic book store. 

We Never Met - KyloTrashForever (3K, E). that scene in When Harry Met Sally where the older couple talks about meeting in the elevator. what happens when two people who are constantly just missing each other finally meet?

Slow burn? My Heart Always Belonged To You - JGoose13 (52K, E). Persuasion AU! reylo + jane austen = magic. 

Soulmates? wholly to be a fool - bigfootsflannel (9K, T). when your soulmate confesses their love, their words appear on your arm. ben makes a drunken confession.

Stuck/stranded together? a place to go - delia-pavorum (52K, E). rey and ben go looking for solitude in luke’s cabin. they don’t get off on the best foot before getting snowed in. sickfic (which i think there is far too little of in reylo fanfic)! beautiful and warm.

University/college? Sociology of Sexuality - Celia_and (4K, E). ben is that just-playing-devil’s-advocate kid in class that we all have to put up with. y’all this is so hot. if this happened in my real life, i think i would never recover.

Work-in-progress? flesh stays no farther reason - galvanator (20K, E). i drop EVERYTHING when this updates! ben and rey are from completely different circumstances, but that doesn’t stop a hookup from turning into something more. i feel like this fic gets their dynamic so right, and i am anxiously awaiting the conclusion in two chapters!

My comfort fic? bloom (you fill my lungs with sweetness, you fill my head with you) - akosmia (12K, T). i’ve read this again and again and i don’t plan on stopping. blind bestselling author ben solo needs a scribe. rey gets the job. there is cooking, there is domesticity, there are overwhelming emotions. my go-to. 

as i’ve said before, akosmia (@kylorensx) is my all time favorite fanfic author. the fact that we are mutuals blows my mind daily. please please go read all of her stuff. you won’t regret it!

Yooooo Fran any new book recs?

The answer is: always. You didn’t specify a genre so I’m gonna sprinkle in a bit of everything.

You Deserve Each Other is incredibly tropey and very fun. It’s not your typical enemies-to-lovers story because the main two idiots start off... engaged. And then it kind of goes downhil... then uphill... from there. So really, it’s an enemies-refalling-in-love story, and to be honest, I think there should be more of those.

A Question of Us, on the other hand, is a slow burn best-friends-to-lovers story, because those often get a bad rep but they can be just as excellent as our favourite, foes to hoes. Especially when the leads have a lot of chemistry, like in this book. Especially if they are clearly in love with one another but are too blind to see it, like in this book.

Conversations with Friends, by Sally Rooney, the author of Normal People (which was recently adapted for TV) is a classic Rooney story - full of people you don’t like, but you know. They’re you; your friends; your family. So it’s relatable and fascinating in an unsettling and sometimes uncomfortable kind of way. Just as heartbreaking as Normal People, but for very different reasons.

Summer of Salt is one of my forever faves. It’s magical realism at its best - soft, subtle, charming. It’s so wonderfully written it has the power to transport you to the lovely seaside town it takes place in. There’s a lovely, dreamy quality to it despite dealing with sad topics.

I’ll Meet You There is a quiet, thoughtful story about Skylar and Josh and... life, to put it simply. It can get quite heartbreaking at times - because that’s how life is - but it’s a beautiful journey for these characters. It’s one of those books that leave you a little bit richer in spirit once you finish, just for having read it.

If We Were Villains is another of my forever faves. This one is similar in tone to The Secret History (another must read!). It’s about a bunch of overly dramatic, Shakespeare-obsessed drama students and the murder that changes their lives. It’s twisty and decadent and delicious. Dark academia at its very, very best.

Have you heard of Sempre? It’s an excellent Mafia romance between the youngest son of a powerful Capo and a girl - a slave - his father rescued. It’s a slow burn tale of love between two people who are polar opposites and also lots of spicy Italian Mafia shenanigans. Fun fact: before it was a book, this was Twilight fanfic.

Addicted to You is about family and friendship and love and damaged rich kids who struggle with all of those. It’s about Lily and Loren, childhood best friends who pretend to date so their families don’t find out about their issues.

The Deal is the first book in the Off-Campus series. If you enjoy university AUs, this is the book for you. It’s about Hannah and Garrett, the star Hockey player, whom she starts tutoring. Yep, it’s that kind of story. Just pure fun.

1. Fic you spent the most time on: It took me more than two years to bring White Knight from kinkmeme prompt to posted fic. I’m really happy with the finished product.

2. Fic you spent the least time on: Most of the ficlets collected in Little Contributions were written very quickly. I try to use ficlets as a way to bust through writers block, so I'll sometimes take a bunch of prompts in a single afternoon, pick a few of them and write the first thing that comes to mind. 

3. Longest Fic: Out There (131k words! I'm still amazed that I wrote something that long!)

4. Shortest Fic: Not including the ficlets, my shortest BBC Sherlock fic is the Sally-Donovan-centric Cake at 2,420 words. My shortest X-Files fic is Rabbit which was done for the Scully-in-155 collection and is, as you might have guessed, 155 words.

5. Most hits: (Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea

6. Most kudos: Also (Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea, by a very large margin. I remain utterly stunned by the reaction that story has received.

7. Most comment threads: White Knight. There was lots of angst over poor Jealous!John in the comment section!

8. Fave Fic you wrote: A lot of these memes ask this question, and I never really know the best way to answer. The Pillar Upon Which England Rests is the very first story I ever wrote for the Sherlock fandom. It's basically my love letter to Mrs Hudson and I am deeply fond of it. I'm also really proud of Out There, because holy shit plotting that fic was hard and I think it holds together well upon re-reads. And (Never) Turn Your Back to the Sea was one of the most emotional and cathartic writing experiences of my life. It's hard to pick a favorite!

9. Fic you want to rewrite/expand on: I am overflowing with ideas for a sequel to Out There, but while I had a lot of fun with it, writing that fic also took a lot out of me. There was a tremendous amount of planning and plotting and work that went into putting the cases together. It's daunting to imagine doing that all over again. Any sequel I did would be similar in structure (each chapter its own individual "episode" fitting together to tell a larger story), and I wouldn't even start working on it unless I could guarantee that I'd be able to devote the necessary amount of time and effort to the project. I honestly don't know if that will ever happen.

10. Share a bit of your WIP or share a story idea that you’re planning: I'm still working on chapter 6 my post-S4 angstfest Borrowed Ghosts. By the end of this chapter, Sherlock and John will once again be standing in the same room. What happens after that... well... you'll just have to wait and see.
