Did you know, that like snakes and lizards, most sharks are ectothermic? This means that, normally, they’re not capable of regulating their own body temperature. However, sharks that live in frigid Arctic waters have adapted an ability called counter-current heat exchange. This method of keeping warm, allows these sharks to survive in even the coldest of the world’s oceans.

Salmon shark (Lamna ditropis)

Size: Up to 3m (10 feet)

Range & Habitat: Salmon sharks are pelagic, open ocean creatures. Their range spans in the Pacific Ocean outwards from the coasts of California up and around to Japan.

Other: While the salmon shark looks very similar to a great white, there are a few key differences. Not only are they typically rounder, smaller, and more spotted, but their range differs considerably. The salmon shark also has a few special quirks that it does not share with the white shark. They have a special body heat system that allows them to keep themselves 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) above the surrounding water. Salmon sharks are aggressive and are often caught in tuna nets when feeding.

🦈 Daily Shark Fact: 🦈

Salmon Sharks are commonly mistaken for a great white shark and have been nicknamed “mini great white” due to their parallel comparisons (absolutely adorable). These sharks are not fished commercially but are frequently captured as bycatch and occasionally caught by recreational fishermen. They are a migratory species and are very fast swimmers because of their torpedo like shape.

Salmon shark (Lamna ditropis): the salmon shark has a lot of spots on its underbody, and it even can maintain their stomach temperature for the cold waters. The max size confirmed is 3 meters (10 ft). They dont attack humans much neither are usually fished, both for food and for sports.

Epaulette (Hemiscyllium ocellatum): they're funny sharks, surviving in low oxygen by increasjng the blood supply to its brain and shutting down non-essencial braincells, they usually waddle along instead of swimming, the maximum size reported was just 1,07 meters (3.5 feet). They're harmless to humans.
