As an odd sort of montage that Colby was mostly sure that he dreamed, he and Sam were flashed away from the Scooby Doo universe. And, God, did he wish that he’d had a camera on him to capture the stunned look on Velma’s face when that happened. It was almost laughable to see her something that she couldn’t explain happen before her very eyes. Unfortunately, that joy dwindled when the pain of traveling through the universes really set in.
He groaned as he readjusted to the poor lighting in the run-down cathedral.
“Did you have fun?”
Colby froze. Was that? No. It couldn’t be. Why would she be there?
He sat up, his chest constricting when he saw the familiar, small girl, leaning against the wall. She looked just the same as she did all those months ago. Except, she almost didn’t. She looked older in a way, the kind of older that comes with having experienced great hardships before anyone ever should. He wondered what she had gone through since they’d each other last.
“Fun? It was a mission,” Colby said, his brows furrowing together.
“What? No it wasn’t.”
“What do you mean?” Sam asked.
“Oh yeah, there was no real MTD mission for you,” Lux confessed, rubbing her hand on the back of her neck. “You two just seemed so stressed out that I wanted to give you a little break. Some harmless fun.”
“Then, why did the Shieldmaiden there line up so much with the one here?” Colby asked.
She shrugged. “Sometimes, universes bleed into each other. Like Sam said before, the Vikings never made it this far. Any legends that exist in this universe are a result of the Scooby Doo universe. Things are allowed to just be a coincidence.”
“Wait, you weren’t with us when we were talking about that,” Colby said. “We said…when we planning coming here. How could you know that?”
Lux’s face flushed. “I might have been keeping tabs on you.”
“And why would you do that? Couldn’t you have just asked us? Why did you have to go behind our backs like that?”
“I wasn’t allowed to make contact with anyone. It’s nothing personal, I promise. The MTD had given me a really top secret mission, and I’d had to spend a lot of time researching to make sure I didn’t fuck this up.”
“So why come out now?” Sam questioned.
“I realized I couldn’t do this alone. I…I needed my friends.”
Colby frowned, not liking how that made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. “And I guess that’s us?”
“Of course it is.”
“And what exactly is the mission?” Sam asked.
“Someone who’s not Sam Wilson is carrying the shield and we need to fix that,” Lux said. “You in?”
They exchanged a glance, then, together, they said, “We’re in.”

Colby and jake paul have almost exactly the same birth chart lmao they are born in the same month same year jake is only days younger than colby so it makes sense but when i read their charts i was so surprised because they have the same major placements but the fast moving planets are different, idk why i find it so funny 😂
wow, that alone is a case study of nature vs. nurture bc... i don't even think of them in the same universe. jake and sam? yes. but not jake and colby lol
also... i still hate the paul brothers. just in case anyone needed a reminder, they both suck still. sorry, but you will never change my mind about that.
(that half isn't directed at you anon. i just... really don't like them lol)

“A great night of fights with two potentially so-so headliners” UFC Fight Night From Brazil Preview
Joey
October 25th
After a very solid afternoon tilt, the UFC is back on the road and back in international waters with a show from Brazil! The wonderful 2nd home of the UFC has seen quite a fall from grace in recent memory as there is ONE current Brazilian champion after running the sport from 2012 to 2014 and for once, there doesn't seem to be a wealth of options out on the bench ready to step up and hit a home run. Now having said that, this card is VERY good with a collection of established names you're familiar with, newbies with high promise, some under 30 or so fighters who have been honing their crafts on undercards and best of all some absolutely perfect matchmaking to back it all up. It's gonna be worth your time so let's see what a Brazilian Fight Night brings to the table on a very busy Saturday slate of action.
Fights: 12
Debuts: 1 (Marcelo Golm)
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 4 (Carlos Felipe OUT, Marcelo Golm IN vs Christian Colombo/Augsto Mendes OUT, Raoni Barcelos IN vs Boston Salmon/Boston Salmon vs Raoni Barcelos CANCELLED/Luan Chagas OUT, Vicente Luque IN vs Niko Price)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 5 (Lyoto Machida, Derek Brunson, John Lineker, Demian Maia, Jim Miller)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC: 3 (Jim Miller, Lyoto Machida, Hacran Dias)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC:  9 (Colby Covington, Marlon Vera, Rob Font, Pedro Munoz, Jack Hermansson, Thiago Marreta Santos, Niko Price, Antonio Carlos Junior, Elizeu Zaleski)
Stat Monitor for 2017:
Debuting Fighters (Current number: 32-29)- Marcelo Golm
Short Notice Fighters (Current number: 17-31-1)- Marclo Golm, Vicente Luque
Second Fight (Current number: 23-33)-  Jarrod Brooks, Devieson Figuerido
Cage Corrosion (16-9-1)- Lyoto Machida, Hacran Dias
Twelve Precarious Ponderings
1- So what does Lyoto Machida even have left at this point? Machida's run at 185 lbs has been interesting to say the least. His resume at 205 lbs is tremendous with wins over Rashad Evans, Dan Henderson, Tito Ortiz, Rich Franklin (forgive me if that was at 185 lbs), Ryan Bader, Randy Couture and Shogun Rua all when those meant a whole hell of a lot. His losses are to Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson and Jon Jones. He made the decision to dwell at 185 lbs in 2014 and thus far the results haven't been as sparkling. Obviously nobody should shun wins over guys like Gegard Mousasi and CB Dollaway but his losses at the weight class have been pretty burtal to bear witness to. He made a valiant effort with a late rally vs Chris Weidman but against Yoel Romero, he was absolutely run over and against Luke Rockhold he was outpowered and overwhelmed. He's approaching 40, coming off a hell of a layoff and his last two fights do little to inspire confidence in him. He is, for all intents and purposes, a guy who seems washed up.
Machida will be the first real case study in how a style like his ages. You always hear that the chin and the reflexes are the first things to go and the power is the last thing. Machida is reliant, almost to an absurd degree on his timing and reflexes. Against Rockhold I can't think of a single thing he could've done differently but he always looked slow vs Yoel Romero. He seemed pensive and once a guy at his age has a tough time pulling the trigger, that's it. That's NOT something that comes back. If you lose the ability to fire, you're done. In his prime, Brunson would've been a style that Machida would crunch up on. A big power so-so cardio wrestler who isn't going to give you a lot to worry about. Machida used to LIVE for those "tough in the first round" types because he'd just pick them off from the outside, wait until they slow down and then blitz and finish them. If Brunson gets him then I have no idea what to say anymore.
2- Who will have the cardio edge in the championship rounds? Machida's never been cardio deficient but he IS going to be 40. Brunson is good early, rougher late and has a style that's not conducive to long fights. A lot of quick hitter explosion on the feet and grinding wrestling late. Might not be a great matchup.
3- The Tough Dad's Division is up in the air but I think I've figured out the key to succeeding as a Tough Dad: Be Available.
From Derek Brunson's fight vs Uriah Hall in September of 2016 to now, this will be his 4th fight. So if you include the Uriah Hall fight, he's fought five times in 13 months. Let's comp that with "the elites" of the division:
September 16 to October 2017 you have Yoel Romero fighting twice,  Robert Whittaker fighting a remarkable three times, Jacare twice, Luke Rochold gracing us with his presence ONCE, Michael Bisping also has just ONE appearance and Chris Weidman has fought three times. Your ability as a middleweight and light heavyweight is your availability I suppose. It's why Tim Boetsch survives in MMA, it's why Sam Alvey will forever have a gig and why Uriah Hall never slumps TOO much. Guys who fight often can eliminate wins and losses a lot quicker. There's a skill and strength to being active so kudos to Brunson for figuring this thing out.
4- Is Demian Maia vs Colby Covington the UFC's way of just taking two problems and hoping they cancel each other out? Like I can't see this fight being exciting in any way really.
5- It's somewhat hidden on a very good card BUT gimme that fight with Jim Miller and Francisco Trinaldo. Massaranduba built up a really great 155 lb streak and it came to a screeching halt when Kevin Lee outlasted him after a hectic first and subbed him in the second round. Jim Miller is sort of in the midst of a career renaissance or at the very least, he's taken great strides in re-establishing himself as a total all action psychopath in the cage. Even when he's athletically outmatched, he seems to always make those fights his own.
6- Pedro Munhoz vs Rob Font is SUCH an impressive fight on paper primarily because it returns Font to the scene of his greatest disappointment. Against John Lineker, Font looked SO overwhelmed from the size of the crowd to the volume to the actual opponent. He didn't fight up to the situation and even if you don't beat a guy like John Lineker, there are ways to impress in a loss. He didn't impress and while Lineker and Munhoz are not even on the same universe in terms of styles and reputation, Munoz is a fantastic 135 lber. This is a very cool fight with a shot at redemption for Rob Font.
7- They have different ways of going about it but both Marlon "Chito" Vera and John Lineker share a common trait for success; they are never ever out of a fight. Lineker's power and his march ahead brawler style make him a threat to anybody. Chito Vera's grappling, length and power in his own right makes him a scary fighter for any opponent. He's long, freakishly athletic and fights like he doesn't know any better. This is another great fight at 135 lbs.
8- If you have FS2 then you're in for a Jim Dandy because the FS2 prelim slate is really, really good. From a battle of good MWs with two clashing styles in Antonio Carlos Jr and all action Jack Marshmann to Elizeu Zaleski vs Max Griffin in what should be a "let 'em fly" slugfest to the return of Niko Price vs competent WW Vicente Luque, you got plenty to dig in and digest.
9- Speaking of Zaleski, I feel like his upside is muted by fans sometimes. Why can't this guy fight in the top 10 of the division? His wins are over Keita Nakamura, Omari Akhmedov and Lyman Good. If you follow beyond the main cards, that's really solid competition and his one loss was to Nicholas Dalby in a fight I was SURE he won. He's all action, he has tremendous cardio, fights at an unrelenting pace and MELTS people with his power and his cardio. If his wrestling improves a smidge, he can beat guys in the top 10.
11- Thiago Santos is all action all of the time....but I have questions about his ability to deal with aggressive wrestlers. There are some things that Jack Marshmann does very well and one of those is pressure and rely on his ground and pound. I don't know if that's a good style for Marreta BUT we shall see if he cracks him first.
12- The UFC's problem in the United State is that fight fans want to see their old guys and dont care about new names. In Brazil, the problem is that the old guys keep losing but they have zero young guys to replace them. The youngest Brazilians on this card? 27 year old John Lineker, 27 year old Antonio Carlos Junior and 25 year old Vicente Luque. Good fighters but almost all have ceilings which will limit their growth going forward. Not overly exciting.
Must wins
1- Derek Brunson
Lyoto Machida is in a very specific group of people who will leave the UFC under their own terms. He's got a job quite possibly for life as a former champion who fights at two weight classes of need PLUS he's Brazilian. He'll be here until he decides he doesn't wanna be here. For Derek Brunson, he's approaching 35 and every big fight he's taken he's lost. Now granted, he made a great showing vs Yoel Romero, probably beat Anderson Silva and had Robert Whittaker hurting. Ifs and buts as they say. He's facing a near 40 Lyoto Machida coming off a long layoff. He HAS to win this or else his availability will only guarantee an existence outside the top 10.
2- Colby Covington
I mean....duh? Covington is trying to be the guy who uses social media to build his profile and get people excited about him. That's AWESOME except his social media ramblings are quite weird. He's an acquired taste and the same can go for his more boring meat and potatoes style which is a throwback to the Matt Hughes era of wrestling and ground and pound above all else. He vs Maia is a case of two negatives being asked to produce a positive and if he does that AND if he wins then the sky may be the limit for him.
3- Antonio Carlos Jr
Antonio Carlos Jr is high upside and an amusing fun style of grappling combined with youth and desperation. The UFC needs a new Brazilian face and Shoeface, ironically enough, could just be that guy. He's a name to keep an eye on even if his hype is just desperation. The HW turned LHW turned MW draws a winnable fight in Jack Marshmann; a sophisicated brawler type who feasts on pressure but is hittable and beatable in any facet of the game. He's a sum of his parts kind of guy. Shoeface needs to win this one because it's a stylistic giftwrapped type opponent at home no less.

scooby doo! and the overdramatic youtubers: the assignment (1) ✧ sam and colby

summary: sam and colby are transported into another universe once more.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
It had been months since Sam and Colby’s adventure into the Karate Kid universe fixed the mess they had inadvertently created. Life had quieted since then. Well, it was as quiet as it could be when you’re well-known YouTubers. Honestly, they hadn’t really experienced quiet since their Vine days. Everything was go, go, go. It was all business, all the time. In a way, they almost missed traveling to a different universe, to be something other than infamous duo Sam Golbach and Colby Brock. They were normal kids for once and, after having lived so long with fans watching their every move, it was almost like a vacation. And, God, could they use a vacation now.
Ever since they returned from the Karate Kid universe and realized that they’d been given that weird device, the portal opener, from Arden—no, Lux—that would allow them to continue traveling the universes, they’d been on edge. They so desperately wanted a way out, if only for just a moment. But they were equally scared of ruining things again. Though no time had passed in their universe, they were dealing with their mess for months. They were away from home, from technology, from everyone they loved, for months. And they weren’t quite ready to leave it all behind again. Yet, the temptation lingered.
Perhaps that was why Colby continued to carry the portal opener, along with their traveling licenses, wherever they went. Just in case they decided to go to another universe last minute, just in case they were needed elsewhere last minute. But it was almost to the point where it was like a safety blanket, a reminder that what they’d done was real. After all, there was no one they could talk to about what happened but each other. Sure, they could use the device to contact Arden Lux but…He wasn’t sure. If she wanted to talk to them. They were hardly friends, after all. Colleagues for a brief while, sure, if you could really call it that. As much as Colby wanted to reach out, to talk about what happened, he didn’t feel like it was his place to. Besides, she was probably too busy being a badass agent to have time to just chitchat. So, that only left Sam that Colby could talk to. And it just…didn’t feel right to talk about. Like it wasn’t their story to tell somehow. So, he just…didn’t.
And, even if it did feel right, they had other things to do.
Like their actual job.
Which was why they were in an old, abandoned cathedral just outside of Los Angeles County.
They, in a surprising turn of events, actually got permission to explore the building by the owner, deciding that for once they didn’t want to risk going to jail once more. So they coughed up a few hundreds, rented out the place for a few hours, and got to filming. After all, there was a wonderful ghost story surrounding the place. Something about a “Shieldmaiden”, which Sam mentioned was weird, as he was fairly certain that the Vikings never made it this far West, whatever that meant. But it was a fun ghost story nonetheless. Allegedly, the Shieldmaiden took over the town, previously known as Little Denmark. She destroyed everything she touched, tearing everything apart so that she could rebuild the town in her image. No stone was left unturned, and the town was never the same. She ruled with an iron fist. What she said was law. If she wanted something, she got it. And she wasn’t afraid to take people down to get it. But, the issue with tyrants was that, eventually they must fall. Those brave enough to take a stand rose from the ashes, challenged her, and…lost. Horrifically. But it was never forgotten what they did. Eventually, the town wasted away. She refused any aid, any contact, with other settlements. Kept them away from the world. And it bit her in the ass. Everything she built was gone. And she, too, died with her dreams of her town.
They say that you can still hear her heartbroken screams at the realization that she was just another failure.
And, well, that was what Sam and Colby were investigating. That the town was haunted. The legend stated that the cathedral was the most haunted building in the entire town. It was where the revolutionaries took their stand. And it was where they fell.
There certainly was something eerie about the building. Perhaps not ghosts, but it was…Off. Some sort of sadness, angst, hung in the air. It was heavy, coming down on them the moment they passed through the doors. But they tried to not let it bog them down, to continue with their usual filming routine. They’d opted to film alone this time around, take it back to the original Sam and Colby XPLR days.
After explaining the history of the place, they went about the actual exploration process. They moved to the far corner of the cathedral, as Sam had noted that it was where people most often detailed paranormal experiences. They set their bags down on an old, wonky pew and Colby went to fish out the EMF reader.
But, when he pulled his hands out, the portal opener was there.
Sam, upon seeing the device, shut the camera off and scoffed. “Seriously? You’re still bringing that around?”
“She might need us,” he mumbled, running his thumb down the screen. “She might want to talk.”
“She hasn’t yet.”
“But she might.”
“And suppose she did. What then? Do we answer? Why should we? She hasn’t reached out.”
“Neither have we.”
“Yeah, well that’s dif—”
“How? How is it any different? And besides—” Colby paused as the screen lit up. “Shit, we got a message.”
“W-What? What does it say?”
“It…it just says, Stop the Shieldmaiden,” Colby said. “Is she fucking with us? Cause…Isn’t the Shieldmaiden already gone?”
“But what else could it mean?” Sam asked. “Maybe another universe has a Shieldmaiden? But, then…I don’t know. Should we answer the call? Don’t they have agents for this?”
But there no time to make a choice, for there was no choice to be made. They’d received their assignment and, as the device enveloped them in a bright light, pulling them through a portal, they knew what they had to do.
Well, sort of.
They’ll figure it out.
Hopefully.
Tumblr media
Colby groaned, rubbing his head as he slowly began to adjust to…wherever the hell he and Sam had ended up. Everything was so bright, it made his head hurt. He felt that same sort of churn of his stomach as he had felt when he returned home from the Karate Kid universe all those months ago. How had that even been possible, them jumping to another universe? They hadn’t even input any information into the portal opener. Could someone else control the device? And why the hell were they, overdramatic youtubers at best, given an assignment? Did the MTD not have agents for this shit?
He opened his eyes fully, blinking quickly to adjust to the light, as he sat up. He was…How was…How could he be in the same place he left in? Did the portal opener not work anymore? Or, wait. No. This was different. He was in the cathedral, yes, but this one was much different than the one he and Sam had been exploring. Or, was it different? It certainly looked similar. But it was cleaner, brighter, more filled with life. And…wait, shit, were those people staring at him and Sam?
Wait, had that blond guy said something?
Something like, “Well gang, it looks like we got another mystery on our hands?”
Were they in the Scooby Doo universe!?
Well, he mused, at least that was an improvement from the Karate Kid universe. At least he knew something about Scooby Doo, had a vague idea of what to expect.
“Hey,” he said, not sure what else to say. What was there to say? He and Sam had been given no direction except to the Shieldmaiden. Would that be something important to bring up? Should he say that immediately? Fuck, they kept just staring at him. “You wouldn’t happen to know anything about a Shieldmaiden, would you?”
The brunette, Velma, blinked and gave him a harsh look. “What do you know about the Shieldmaiden?”
“Just that we’re supposed to investigate what she’s doing here,” Colby said. Fuck, he used to not be this good at lying. But was he lying? He wasn’t, really, he supposed. That was what he and Sam were supposed to be doing. And yet, it still left a bitter taste in his mouth.
“Investigate?” Velma repeated. “And just who are you?”
Sam, who’d finally gained his bearings, sat up, too. “I’m Sam, this is Colby. We’re paranormal investigators.”
She laughed. “Oh, you can’t be that ignorant, can you? Ghosts aren’t real.”
“Yeah, that’s why we investigate it,” Colby said. “To see if it’s real or not.”
“Besides, we’re always finding out about new things existing in the world. Who’s to say that one day we don’t find out that ghosts, or something like ghosts, are actually real? And who would look like the dumb one then?” Sam added.
Colby nodded. “And we never even said if we believed ghosts to be real or not. Just that we investigate their potential existence.”
Daphne jumped in before things could get any more hostile. “Well, I’m Daphne, and this is Velma, Fred, Shaggy, and Scooby,” she said, pointing to each of the people she was introducing. “And these are the Hex Girls—Thorn, Luna, and Dusk. And this is their director, NJ Lorei.”
“Lorei,” Colby said. “That’s funny. One of our friends has that last name, too.”
“You said something about the Shieldmaiden, right?” Fred said. “What are you doing here investigating that?”
Sam shrugged. “Our…organization gave us this assignment, not a lot of information. Just told us that there were strange things happening here, and we should come look into it.”
“Well, the only strange thing here is how you got in here without anyone noticing,” Thorn said, eyeing them.
Colby’s face grew warm. Though the moment was serious, he couldn’t believe he was talking to Thorn from the Hex Girls. He remembered growing up that he was obsessed with her, probably watching The Witch’s Ghost a thousand times just to see her. “I mean, it wasn’t hard…The door was open.”
“Doesn’t explain how you broke a pew.”
“I got two left feet.”
“That doesn’t matter,” Velma said. “I think we’ve got this handled. You can tell whoever you work for that Mystery Inc. has it under control.”
“It doesn’t work like that,” Sam said.
“Wait!” Shaggy said. “Why don’t we just team up? Everyone gets to solve the mystery, and with more hands on deck, me and Scoob can spend more time getting food.”
“Reah, reah, reah!” Scooby agreed, nodding his head eagerly.
Velma ground her teeth together, looking annoyed at the prospect of working with people who potentially believed in the supernatural, before sighing. “Fine. It could get this mystery solved faster if we have more people. C’mon, we should go to the library to see if we can find any information about the Shieldmaiden.”
Tumblr media
When they reached the library, there was already someone at the reference desk. She was a tall blonde and, when she turned upon hearing them enter, she had bright blue eyes and a megawatt smile. “Hi! You tourists?” she greeted them, much louder than a library would dictate, her nose sort of scrunching up in an odd sort of way when she said the word tourists.
“Something like that,” Fred said. “Our friends are filming a music video here, and we came to check it out.”
“Oh, those people,” she dismissed. “Honestly, it’s just the worst.”
“What? That a famous band is using your town as the backdrop for their video? Isn’t that a good thing?”
“Only if you enjoy tourists coming in and ruining everything good about this town. The tourism industry is not a viable way to stimulate our economy, and the sooner Daddy gets that, the better.”
“Daddy?” Velma repeated.
“Mhm, the mayor.” She extended a hand to them, shaking it with each of them. “I’m Jacklyn Ann.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Daphne said. “Say, would you happen to know anything about the Shieldmaiden?”
She shook her head. “Nothing more than what’s in the papers. But, hey, you might find something around here somewhere?”
“That’s what we’re hoping for,” Velma said. “Well, it was nice to meet you.”
“You too,” she said, before waltzing out of the library.
The gang, save for Scooby and Shaggy, turned their attention to the librarian seated at the reference desk, asking about where to find new articles or something. Shaggy and Scooby, though, were busy sneaking off, probably trying to find if there was any food anywhere. Colby nudged Sam, getting his attention.
“Should we follow them?” he whispered. “Those two usually are good about accidentally running into the bad guy, and that’s exactly what we need.”
“Good catch,” Sam whispered back. “Let’s go.”
They caught up to the duo, saying something about how they were also hungry. Not a lot was said, mostly Scooby and Shaggy muttering about where exactly the break room in the library would be. Eventually, though, they found the break room and the ever-hungry duo descended upon the food.
“So, what should we—” Sam paused, watching as Colby joined the snack hunt. “Brother, what are you doing?”
“What?” Colby asked. “I haven’t ate breakfast yet.”
“…whatever. Where should we begin with searching for clues?”
Shaggy jumped in, scarfing down an intricate sandwich that in no way looked edible. “Nuh uh, the kitchen is the safe place, and safe place means no mention of mysteries and ghosts and monsters.”
Sam began to argue, but something just beyond Shaggy caught his eye. A woman with long blonde hair in fairy-locks and a zombified face that somehow had black face paint on it stood just in the door way. She looked like she was ready for battle, with her heavy armor and large axe.
“You mean, a Shieldmaiden has no place here?” Sam asked, still staring at the woman.
“Absolutely not.”
“Then I suggest we run,” Sam said, grabbing Colby by the arm and taking off.
“Wait, my sandwich!” Colby shouted, reaching out to grab his food, but Sam was too fast. Damn him for being so dedicated to running a six-minute mile.
Behind them Shaggy had jumped into Scooby’s arms out of fear, the Great Dane quickly matching Sam’s pace as they raced through the library. The Shieldmaiden let out a loud cry before Colby could hear her thundering footsteps.
“Shit, Sam, can we go any faster?” Colby asked, looking over his shoulder to see the Shieldmaiden looking ready to throw her ask. Sam looked back, seeing Scooby still carrying Shaggy, and before he could really think about what he was doing, he scooped up Colby and pushed himself to run even faster. “Uhh, this isn’t exactly what I had in mind.”
“Beggars can’t be choosers!”
They were running so fast that they hadn’t noticed that they’d reached the front of the library, nor that the rest of the gang was waiting for them. And, while the gang was waiting for them, they were blind to the fact that the Shieldmaiden, in an odd turn of events that seems to only make sense in cartoons, had somehow ended up behind the gang. And, with her axe raised above her head, she looked ready to kill.
Colby catapulted himself out of Sam’s arms, an ungodly speed overtaking him as he dashed towards the gang. He was shouting something, probably “look out”, but all he could think was of was getting the others out of the way, to save them even if, by cartoon logic, they likely wouldn’t be hurt. He reached them faster than he ever could in his normal universe, pulling Daphne away from the axe that was about to come down over her head, Fred and Velma dodging out of the way when they realized what was happening.
By the time the dust settled, the Shieldmaiden had disappeared, and Daphne was still in Colby’s arms.
And Fred looked less than pleased with this development.

summary: it looks like we got another mystery on our hands.
word count: 1,218
warning(s): no <3 (well except that this is a poorly written series and you shouldn’t read it :))
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It started as any mystery does. Four people, two women and two men, perpetually stuck in their teens, and their Great Dane, driving down an empty road in their well-travelled, green and blue van decorated in 60’s-inspired orange flowers. Some mindless tune was on the radio, something that Daphne had put on their road trip playlist. But the song didn’t matter. None of it mattered. Not really. Because they were the type of people who had no care in the world. And why should they? Everything always worked out in the end for them, even when the odds have seemed stacked against them. They were the perfect picture of innocence, optimism, and hope. But, above all, they were the epitome of friendship.
It was one of those things that shouldn’t have worked. That shouldn’t have created such an unbreakable bond. On paper, it doesn’t make sense. In what world would a food-obsessed man and his dog develop a close friendship with the stereotypical jock guy with an affinity for traps, the pretty girl who has a penchant for trouble, and the brainy girl who always approached situations from an objective point of view. And, yet, they shared one common love:  solving mysteries. Well, perhaps not for two members of the group, but the pursuit of solving mysteries certainly tied them to the others in a way that couldn’t easily be undone.
“Where’re we going again?” Shaggy, real name Norville but we don’t talk about that (though should we discuss the origin of the nickname? Is it because of his shaggy hair? Would he still be Shaggy if not for his hair? If he had a buzzcut, would his nickname be Buzz?), asked as he and his talking dog, Scooby Doo, assembled sandwiches in the back of the van.
Daphne turned, her smile big and bright as she explained, “Little Denmark! The Hex Girls are using it as the backdrop for their next music video and they asked us to be in it!”
Shaggy groaned. “Is this going to be anything like the last time we were asked to come to one of their music video shoots?”
Velma snorted, flipping through a tourist guidebook for the town. “They don’t have any sort of vampire legends here, Shaggy. Besides, the odds are slim that we’ll have to deal with another pair of twins pretending to be vampires again.”
“Well, when we’re involved, anything’s possible,” Shaggy grumbled, adding another layer to his sandwich.
“There’s to worry about, Shag,” Fred said, driving past the “Now Entering: Little Denmark” sign. “Not everywhere we go is there some bad guy to unmask.”
Shaggy, looking ready to launch into an itemized list of every place the group had ever gone to and every bad guy they unmasked, was cut off by Velma, who’d settled on a page in her guidebook. “There’s not even a haunted section in the book. We all know how towns like this love to use some freaky fake supernatural entity to drawl in more visitors, and there’s nothing here to suggest that they would even do that. The spookiest thing they’ve got is weekly Viking re-enactments that tourist can participate in.”
“Well, I guess we’ll know where to find you when we’re not with the Hex Girls,” Daphne teased, nudging Velma with her elbow. “I think this is more of a vacation for you than anyone else.”
“You can thank the Hex Girls for that,” Velma laughed, shutting the guidebook and tucking it away in her bag.
“I still can’t believe they chose this place as a backdrop for their music video,” Fred said, looking at the quaint Danish-inspired architecture they were passing by. Though the band was a self-described eco-goth ensemble, they often leaned more heavily into the goth part of their persona. And, yet, this town that looked like something plucked straight out of a period piece, was far more…cutesy than the group was used to, at least as far as the Hex Girls were concerned.
“You shouldn’t let the outward appearances fool you, Freddie,” Velma chastised, though there was no malice in her tone. A know-it-all by nature, she never turned down an opportunity to teach her friends something knew. Not everyone could be as brilliant as her, but that didn’t mean she should look down at them. It only meant that she should share what she knows so that they, too, could know. “Denmark, and the rest of Scandinavia, are well known for their history with the Vikings, and there’s probably few people who were as bloody as—”
“Ooh, we’re here!” Daphne squealed, accidentally cutting Velma off.
Fred parked the van in front of the cathedral in the middle of the town, the gang hopping out as soon as the van was stopped. They followed Fred into the cathedral, trying to not make too much noise as the Hex Girls were actively filming their music video. The girls stood at the front of the large room, too lost in the music to pay them any attention. It wasn’t until the director called “cut!” that they let the girls know they were there.
“Wow, that was great!” Daphne gushed, running up to them.
Thorn, Luna, and Dusk all lit up when they realized their friends had arrived, pulling them all into a tight hug. As they let go, Thorn said, “Oh, we’re so glad that you’re all here!”
“Rappy ro re rere,” Scooby said, his face lighting up as Dusk pulled a Scooby Snack out of her pocket for him.
“No, you have no idea how glad we are you’re here,” Luna said. “Some really freaky stuff is going on.”
Velma frowned. “Freaky? What do you mean?”
The director approached the group, saying, “Something called a Shieldmaiden has been terrorizing the town since we got here, probably longer.”
Thorn nodded, then realized they didn’t know their director, and quickly added, “This is NJ Lorei, he’s our director for this music video. He’s actually the one who scouted out this place for us to use.”
“A Shieldmaiden?” Velma asked. “But there’s little historical proof to prove that Shieldmaidens were even real.”
Thorn shrugged. “I don’t know, it’s just what the people are saying. And, honestly, even if Shieldmaidens have no historical roots, there’s definitely one wreaking havoc on this town. They’ve been going after, like, all of the historic places here, and just leaving them completely destroyed.”
Far away, there was a thunking crash! in the far corner of the cathedral. Shaggy, already on edge from the girls’ story, jumped into Scooby’s arms, the pair of visibly shaking. The others, calmer than them, shared a look before turning toward the source of the crash.
“Should we—” Velma began.
“We should,” Fred confirmed, already walking toward the back of the cathedral.
None of them knew what to expect, but none of them would have ever thought they would find two young men, a blond and a brunet, laying in the broken pieces of what looked like was once a spare pew. They were groaning, slowly coming to, and the brunet one was clutching what looked like an extremely high-tech cell phone in his hand.
“Well, gang,” Fred decided, “it looks like we’ve got another mystery on our hands.”

warning(s): fred is pissed at colby
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gang settled at a table in the library, calm now that the adrenaline from being nearly killed by the Shieldmaiden had worn off. Except, Fred still looked ready to kill Colby. And this disdain for Colby certainly was helped when, after the coast was clear, Daphne hugged him tight and declared her thanks a hundred times over. Yeah, Fred was pissed off, and Colby was praying that they solve this mystery ASAP so that their mission could be complete and they could return home, lest Colby return home in a body bag.
“So, uh, what did you find out, Velma?” Sam asked, fiddling with his thumbs.
“More than you did when you ran off with Scooby and Shaggy,” she said, smiling slightly, not looking as angry as her words would suggest.
“In our defense, we just wanted to find the Shieldmaiden,” Colby said. “And it’s always the ones who break off from the group that find the monster first, so our logic was sound.”
“Hm, I suppose,” Velma said, flipping through her notebook that she had jotted down clues in while they had been researching. “The history of the Shieldmaiden is a bit fuzzy. As far as I could see, there is no real historical roots in her existence. There have been rumors over the last hundred years or so, but nothing that was of note. It mostly surrounds a—”
“Let me guess,” Sam interrupted. “It’s some ghost story about a Shieldmaiden who once took over Little Denmark, destroying effectively everything. She wanted power, and the only way to get and enforce that power was by ruining everything that the town prided itself on. And once she got that power? She made sure that no one could take away. At one point, a rebellion rose up. But it failed so horrifically, with so many lives lost, that no one dared challenge her again. The townsfolk never forgot them, though, and what they had sacrificed in order to try and get some semblance of peace. Eventually, the Shieldmaiden wasted away and, with no heirs, so did the town.”
Velma blinked. “Actually, yes. The ghost story basically faded away after a while, save for some journals detailing everything. That’s essentially where all of the information came from, so who’s to say if it’s real or not.”
Colby frowned. So, in this universe, the Shieldmaiden story was purely legend? Whereas in his and Sam’s universe, people were trying to pass it off as fact? Interesting…
“Anyways, the story has seen some resurgences over the years, namely when similar legends have made the rounds online. None of this was any issue until a few months ago, a real Shieldmaiden ghost made its first appearance in town. And ever since her first appearance, she seems to be going after a very specific type of infrastructure in town.”
“And what’s that?” Sam asked.
“Well—”
But, before Velma could finish her thought, the Hex Girls threw open the doors to the library, running over to their table, earning a loud “shhh!” from the librarian. They ignored the librarian, only stopping when they reached the table. Colby felt his face grow warm when Thorn stopped just behind him, her hand on the back of his chair as she tried to catch her breath.
“What’s happening?” Daphne asked.
“It’s the Shieldmaiden!” Thorn said. “You need to come quick!”
“She attacking again!” Dusk added.
“Follow us!” Luna said, grabbing onto Velma’s hand and tugging her out of her seat.
The rest quickly jumped up, following the Hex Girls to the scene.
As they walked, Colby slowed so he and Sam were at the back of the group. When he was sure that no one could hear them, he asked Sam, “Do you think something’s going on between our universes?”
“Because the Shieldmaiden stories have overlapped? I’m not sure,” Sam admitted. “It’s strange. Maybe it has something to do why we were given this mission?”
“Like, if the Shieldmaiden isn’t stopped, she’ll do something in our universe?”
“Maybe?” Sam paused. “I wish Ard—Lux. I wish Lux was here. She would know what was going on.”
“I just wish Lux would talk to us,” Colby said. “She’s left us in the dark, probably gave us this mission, and she just…I don’t know. I thought we all got close in the Karate Kid universe, but I guess it more one-sided than I thought.”
“I mean, she’s got an intense job. We should know better than anyone how hard it is to keep in contact with people while we’re working. We can’t exactly fault her for that.”
“I know. It’s just…I miss her. Like, more than I thought I would.”
Sam nodded. “I get that. You did spend more time with her than I did, but…You just gotta trust that she’ll come around when she’s able.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
“Then what else can you do?”
They’d accidentally fell so far behind that, when they caught up to the rest of the gang and the Hex Girls, they’d already finished talking to the witnesses. Shit, they were really fucking bad at doing this mission. What would happen if they didn’t keep up? Would they fail? And what would that mean for their universe?
When they reached the gang, Velma was saying, “Well, gang, looks like this mystery is just about wrapped up?”
“Huh? What did we miss?”
Tumblr media
“Shoot, shoot, shoot!” Sam cursed—or, at least, tried to curse—as he got his foot stuck in some elaborate trap that resulted in him dangling in a tree outside of the cathedral. Why couldn’t he curse out loud? Was this a result of them being in a cartoon universe? ‘Cause if it was, he couldn’t wait until he was out of this hellscape.
“Sorry!” Fred apologized, running up and quickly untangling him. Sam landed on the ground with a quiet thud! “That wasn’t meant for you…”
“Yeah, I figured it was for the Shieldmaiden…”
“Oh, no, it was for your friend.”
Sam blinked. “Colby? Why?”
Fred scoffed, resetting the trap in the event that Colby came back. “He tried making a move on Daphne earlier, and now everyone thinks they’re about to be some power couple. There’s even headlines already—Meet Little Denmark’s Newest Powercouple: #Colbne! As if Daphne would ever date him. I mean, why would she, when she can have someone tall and good at traps and blond and good at traps—”
“Listen, brother, you don’t have anything to worry about. Colby was just trying to save her, not trying to make a move on her. Trust me—”
Before Sam could finish his sentence, he heard the frightened shouts of Colby, Shaggy, and Scooby, who’d been used as bait to catch the Shieldmaiden.
“Wait, they’re supposed to go to the other trap! Where the girls are!”
“Well, change of plans, Fred, ‘cause the Shieldmaiden’s gonna have to go into the trap meant for Colby!” Sam said, gesturing for the the guys to run toward where they were so that the Shieldmaiden would get caught.
And, thankfully, Colby at least seemed to know what was up, running towards them before jumping out of the way last minute so that the Shieldmaiden, who was hot on his heels. Unable to stop herself, she fell right into the trap, a relatively simple design where her foot was caught in a loop of rope that flew up, dangling her upside down from the tree.
She trashed around, trying to free herself, but Fred let her fall easily, knocking her head against the ground so that she was disoriented when she sat up.
By then, Velma, Daphne, and the Hex Girls had rounded the building.
“Jinkies, you caught the Shieldmaiden!” Daphne said.
“Good job, Freddie! Now, let’s unmask this gal and so who’s been behind this mess all along,” Velma said, She reached over, pulling off the zombie mask off the Shieldmaiden.
“Jacklyn Ann?!” everyone cried out.
By now, the authorities had arrived and began to place handcuffs on the now un-masked villain.
“Ah, just as I expected!” Velma said. She turned her attention to everyone else and explained, “The Shieldmaiden has been targeting tourist destinations all over Little Denmark. If you recall, when we met Jacklyn Ann earlier, she expressed her hatred for the tourist industry.”
Jacklyn Ann scoffed. “Well, can you blame me? Tourists ruin everything they touch! They have no respect for where they visit! They trash everything, they have no respect for history! They prioritize their fun over all else, and it cheapens the town! Then, when the town’s resources are drained, the town suffers!”
“Well, we can’t fault your reasoning, but surely you could’ve taken a different route, a more legal route to achieve your ends?” Colby said. “I mean, isn’t your dad the mayor? Couldn’t he have done something?”
“Oh, Daddy doesn’t listen to me! This was the only way for him to see that tourism is evil!” she shouted. “And I would’ve gotten away with it, too, if it hadn’t been for you meddling kids!”
“Yeah, yeah, we get that all the time,” Shaggy said.
They watched as she was carted off in a police car, the car driving away. They stood still for a moment, before Velma turned to Sam and Colby said, “I told you there was no such thing as ghosts.”
“One instance doesn’t disprove anything,” Sam said, shrugging. “You never know what’s out there. And, uh, we should probably be heading out. Got more investigations to do, you know.”
“Wait!” Thorn said. “Before you go, would you like to be in our music video? It’s the least we could do to repay you, all of you, for helping out here.”
Sam and Colby shared a glance. Then, Colby said, “Sure. Don’t see why not.”

Previously on “Sam and Colby vs. the Universes”...
"Did you have fun?"
Colby froze. Was that? No. It couldn't be. Why would she be there?
He sat up, his chest constricting when he saw the familiar, small girl, leaning against the wall. She looked just the same as she did all those months ago. Except, she almost didn't. She looked older in a way, the kind of older that comes with having experienced great hardships before anyone ever should. He wondered what she had gone through since they'd seen each other last.
"Fun? It was a mission," Colby said, his brows furrowing together.
"What? No it wasn't."
"What do you mean?" Sam asked.
"Oh yeah, there was no real MTD mission for you," Lux confessed, rubbing her hand on the back of her neck. "You two just seemed so stressed out that I wanted to give you a little break. Some harmless fun."
"Then, why did the Shieldmaiden there line up so much with the one here?" Colby asked.
She shrugged. "Sometimes, universes bleed into each other. Like Sam said before, the Vikings never made it this far. Any legends that exist in this universe are a result of the Scooby Doo universe. Things are allowed to just be a coincidence."
"Wait, you weren't with us when we were talking about that," Colby said. "We said...when we were planning to come here. How could you know that?"
Lux's face flushed. "I might have been keeping tabs on you."
"And why would you do that? Couldn't you have just asked us? Why did you have to go behind our backs like that?"
"I wasn't allowed to make contact with anyone. It's nothing personal, I promise. The MTD had given me a really top secret mission, and I'd had to spend a lot of time researching to make sure I didn't fuck this up."
"So why come out now?" Sam questioned.
"I realized I couldn't do this alone. I...I needed my friends."
Colby frowned, not liking how that made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside. "And I guess that's us?"
"Of course it is."
"And what exactly is the mission?" Sam asked.
"Someone who's not Sam Wilson is carrying the shield and we need to fix that," Lux said. "You in?"
They exchanged a glance, then, together, they said, "We're in."
Tumblr media
Present...
Except, as many as that sounded, something wasn’t right. Colby wasn’t totally up-to-date on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that whole premise sounded vaguely familiar. Something about Sam Wilson giving up the shield and a terrorist group and…something about an hour cut of some man awkwardly dancing?
And…if that was the plot of something in the MCU, what were they supposed to do? Colby understood why they had to fix the Karate Kid universe. They fucked it up, they interrupted Daniel’s ability to beat Johnny or whatever. But, if this was part of the plot…It didn’t make any sense to him.
“Wait, isn’t that the plot of a TV show or something?” Colby asked. “I swear, I saw something like that on twitter.”
Sam whipped his head around, wrinkling his nose. “You’re on Marvel stan twitter?”
Colby’s face flushed as Sam’s tone. Quickly, he said, “Sometimes I like to watch petty drama unfold in fandoms that aren’t our own.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
Colby frowned. Was he unaware? Or was he playing dumb? “You know, how batshit crazy our fans can be. Like the whole drama between the different platforms. But, hey, if you ever need a break, go over to Tumblr. They’re nice. They call me ‘Moony’ and I bring cookies to our monthly meetings.” Colby’s frown deepened. “Well, I think they’re nice. Sometimes I can’t tell. There’s this one blog that yells at me every time I forget to bring cookies. And I think she said she’d fight you the first chance she gets. But that’s neither here nor there.”
Sam’s jaw dropped. “You have a Tumblr?! Didn’t that shit die in, like, 2016?”
“Yeah. But don’t tell anyone. It’s kind of a secret hideout.”
Lux cleared her throat. “Anyways, that wasn’t what was supposed to actually happen in the actual Marvel universe. Sam was supposed to take up the shield, end of story. While it does seem to be following the plot of the show as of now, the MTD doesn’t want us to be taking any chances.”
Colby nodded. That made sense. He guessed. He still didn’t understand this multiverse shit. “But why us? Don’t you have other agents you could’ve gone with?”
“I don’t trust the other agents the way I trust you two. And, after the success of us fixing the Karate Kid universe, the MTD decided to allow my request for you two to join.” Lux shifted on her feet. “That is, if you want to join? It’ll be more dangerous this time around. A lot more dangerous. I mean, I assume you know about the movies. It’s not that much different, except maybe more dangerous, if you could believe that. I don’t want you to feel pressured to do this just because I’m asking.”
“I’m in. Without a doubt,” Colby said. And he meant it. Some part of him should have been concerned about his personal safety. But Colby was never the type of person to care about himself like that. If he was asked to do something, he would do it, regardless of whether or not it would hurt him. And after everything that’s happened, if Lux asked anything of him, he would say yes.
Sam looked significantly less convinced, knowing the stakes now. He started to give Colby a look, ready to deny his involvement, but Colby was quick to cut his best friend off.
“Come on, man. We can’t pass up something like this. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
“We’ve already done the once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Colby sighed. “Okay, look, if it gets too dangerous, we’ll pull out. We’ll stop. We’ll come back here and forget it happened.” He looked at Lux. “We can do that right?”
“It would make my job harder but…Your safety is important. If push comes to shove, sure. You can press the big red button and come back home.”
Sam ground his teeth together, looking like he was trying to find another argument. But when none came, he said, “Fine. I’m in.”
“Great!” Lux chirped. “Grab my hand, we’re about to get superhero’d up, baby!”
Colby grabbed onto Lux’s hand with one of his hands, then grabbed Sam’s with his free hand.
“Wait, what?” Sam asked.
But there was no time for an explanation, because the three of them were being thrown into the multiverse.

hitting the books ✧ colby brock
pairing: colby brock x fem!reader (college au)
summary: sam convinced him to take a stupid philosophy class. but, after meeting you, colby decides that perhaps philosophy isn’t that bad after all.
word count: 2,083
warning(s): sorta dumb colby (but not in a mean way!!), mentions of cheating on tests, colby’s a big ole sap
note: dr. doctor named after a professor of my own lmaoo (not a professor of philosophy of course lol, but the philosophy class itself is loosely based off of the one I just finished taking lmao). as always, the gif is my own. if you want to request I write anything, you can do so: here.

Colby trusted Sam, for better or for worse. The kid had always had his back, always stuck up for him and vice versa. There was nothing they couldn’t or wouldn’t do together. It was Sam and Colby vs the World, as they liked to joke. Perhaps that’s why they ended up going to the same university together. Sam had better offers out there, of course, to more prestige places, given his good graces and practically spotless record. But academics didn’t come as easily to Colby as they did Sam. He wasn’t dumb, of course. Perhaps a bit naïve, but never dumb. It’s just...some things were harder for him to grasp onto and he needed someone to help walk him through it. He’d get there eventually, he just needed a little more time than Sam did. And perhaps that’s why Sam decided to deny the offers from the prestige universities and stick it out with Colby in the university that was...okay, but certainly not on the same level as the ones Sam receives offers from. If Sam wasn’t there to help Colby when he was confused, who would be? (And...let’s be honest, the boys would really, really miss each other if they went their separate ways right after high school. You don’t become as close as Sam and Colby did during their geeky band kid days and not miss each other if you’re forced apart by the dredges of adulthood.)
And that’s how they ended up at an okay, decently priced university not too far from their parents so that they could run screaming and crying when they really, really struggled, but far enough away that they could have the independence they so longed for. They ended up getting a dorm together and, unlike other high school friends who share a room, it actually turned out pretty well. The fall semester went off with only a few bumps in the way, but it wasn’t anything they couldn’t work through.
Then the spring semester came and Colby wanted to smash his head through a wall. Sam and Colby majored in different fields, but both fell under the College of Business and had enough overlap that allowed them to take a few classes together every semester. However, this semester they weren’t so lucky in getting major classes together. Instead, they had to get a gen ed class together. Colby allowed Sam to pick, but good God did he hate himself for doing so.
Sam, ever interested in philosophy, chose for the two of them to take Beginning Philosophy together. Which was fine enough because the professor, Dr. Doctor, had really good reviews, as they found out via ratemyprofessor.com. Apparently, everything was straight from the lectures, which he would always record and upload to Blackboard later, complete with the PowerPoint slides and even a transcript of the lecture. And the readings were relatively light, with many of them averaging only five pages in length, with the longest reading being ten pages. But, still, there was something about contemplating human nature and if God exists and morality and—FUCK! It just hurt his brain to even think about.
Colby somehow managed to get through the assignments with easy B’s and C’s. And the exams for each units were more of a struggle, but he never once dropped below a C. He could’ve gotten a high exam grade, since Dr. Doctor graded on a curve but fucking Sam and some other girl in the class always, always, always wrecked the curve with their perfect fucking 100′s and getting all the fucking bonus points. Honestly, fuck them. Fuck them.
God, Colby was so frustrated. Finals week was fast approaching and he was sure that he would be able to pass all of his business finals. Perhaps not with flying colors, perhaps not with grades not nearly as high as Sam’s grades, but you know what they say: D’s get degrees. But fuck, he wasn’t sure he could pass this stupid fucking philosophy final. It was cumulative, so they’d be tested over everything they learned over the semester. And Colby forgot that shit as quick as he finished each unit exam.
Sam was a saint, though, and agreed to tutor Colby every chance they had until the day of the final. Granted, the final was online, so he could technically just ask Sam for help if they took the test in their room or booked a study room in the library but...he wanted to prove himself. Prove that he wasn’t as stupid as he knew people thought he was. Sure, school wasn’t exactly a place he excelled at, but didn’t mean he was dumb!
...Right?
One weekend in mid-April, Sam and Colby went to the library. The library was practically empty on the weekends. Most students went home, or otherwise went off-campus to study, so they knew that they could find a good place to study.
He supposed he shouldn’t have been surprised when they accidentally ran into you, the only other person in their philosophy class who’s grades rivaled Sam’s. And, there you were, on the third floor of the library, books stretched out across the table, as you chewed on your pen and typed notes furiously on your computer.
Sam nudged him, whispering, “Hey, wanna ask her if we can join her?”
“...why?”
“Two genius beginning philosophy students are better than one.”
“...and how do you know she’s studying philosophy?”
“Trust me, no one looks that pissed off unless they’re trying to figure out what the hell an ontological argument is.”
“...a what?”
“Oh, yeah, we’re definitely asking her for help.”
Colby let Sam walk up first, not wanting to handle the embarrassment if you weren’t up to helping them—him—out. But you grinned, motioning for Sam to sit and for him to come over.
“Hi,” Colby said, sitting across from you and opening his backpack. “I’m Colby Brock.”
“Y/N,” you said. “So, you’re the hopeless dolt who can’t tell me what an ontological argument is?”
“I couldn’t tell you anything we’ve learned all semester.”
You snorted, your nose wrinkling slightly. But not in a “oh shit this kid’s real dumb” sort of way. No, it was more of a cute—holy fuck, Colby, chill! This girl’s nice enough to be helping you out! You don’t need to be thinking about how pretty she is, or how kind her smile is, or how he oddly wanted to reach across the table to old her hand.
“Well, you’ve come to the right place, Mr. Brock,” you laughed.
...could you please keep calling him “Mr. Brock”?
Four hours later, and Colby was...not struggling. Okay, he was, but it wasn’t as bad as usual. You were running through everything you’d learn so far in the semester, trying to gauge what Colby really really really needed help with and what could wait a little bit longer to go over.
“So, Berkeley—” Colby started, trying to make sense of his notes.
“You’re mispronouncing it,” you said, cutting him off.
What? No he wasn’t!!
“Huh? It’s the same thing as the college, and I know how to pronounce that.”
“Yeah, in terms of the college that’s named after him, it is burr-kly. But, when you’re talking about the philosopher, it’s bark-kly.”
“That’s so fucking dumb.”
“Yeah, but it’s right, so really you’re the dumb one here.”
“...I hate that. I wanna cry.”
But you smiled, and the tears that had started to prick at his eyes from the frustration of not understanding a damn fucking thing started to disappear.
Yeah, perhaps this wan’t going to be so bad after all.
Until, an hour later, when you switched to a different philosopher and Colby wanted to break the chair he was sitting on over the table.
“And Kant—” you began.
“—killed someone.” Colby finished.
“Excuse me? I...I don’t think he did.”
You...You almost looked cute, with your eyebrows knitted together, trying to figure out what the hell Colby was talking about.
Sam laughed loudly as Colby said, “He’s about to. I’m fucking bored to death and don’t understand a damn thing!”
But, then you reached across the table, taking his hand in yours, rubbing your thumb over the top of it. “It’s going to be okay, Colby. Not everything comes easily to some people. But that doesn’t mean you’re dumb, or you can’t understand it. We’re just running through topics right now. I promise, we’ll start getting into them deeper and exploring them more thoroughly so you’ll know what’s going on when the exam date arrives.”
Colby stared at your connected hands and swallowed hard. “...promise?”
“I swear on all my A’s that I, and Sam, will help you get through this with at least a low C.”
“Thank you.”
And swear it you did. Every other day until May the three of you met in the library. You didn’t always talk philosophy. Sometimes you talked about each other’s lives, the struggles of other classes, your plans for the future. And, God, you only became more attractive every time you spoke.
Colby hoped this lasted long after the semester was over. There was something so kind, so alluring, about you and your presence. He wasn’t quite ready to let that go.
It was the last weekend before the exam. The exam, conveniently, opened the next day, on Sunday, and closed on Wednesday. But you had to take the exam in one sitting, as it was limited to two hours and the time would keep going even if you closed out of the exam. After finishing the last of the reviews, Colby was struck with an idea, an idea to get at least one more meeting before the semester ended.
“Hey, we should all take the exam in the same room and help each other with the answers!” Colby suggested.
“..That’s against the rules, Mr. Brock.”
“Baby, there ain’t nothing wrong with bending a few rules. Besides, Dr. Doctor won’t even find out.”
You couldn’t hide the smile that was stretching across your face when he called you “baby”. And he certainly couldn’t miss the way you got so flustered, blinking rapidly and stumbling over your words as you realized that, perhaps, Colby Brock was flirting with you. “Well...well....I, uh, suppose, we could do that. Perhaps it’s better that way. Since, you know, if there’s any problem with the technology, we can cross-reference with each other to make sure it’s not a larger issue?”
“Sure, Y/N, sure. Do you wanna get the exam over on Sunday?”
“I’m fine with that.”
“Sam?”
“Yeah, that’s okay with me.”
“Great! I’ll go book a room!”
And the next day, after a grueling two hours and with only five inquiries to you and Sam about the questions, Colby made it out of the exam alive.
The nice thing about taking an exam online, in the case that it was multiple choice, was that you got your answers immediately. And Colby wanted to practically cry when he saw that he had gotten an amazing, a beautiful, a perfect 85.6%. Not an A, not a 100, but...it was his 85.6% and nothing could ruin it.
And, certainly, nothing could ruin the feeling he had when you jumped to hug him when he cheered.
“I’m so proud of you, Colby!” you said. “I knew you could do it!”
Sam had a shit-eating grin when he saw how red Colby’s face had turned, and said, “Congrats, brother. You’ve earned it.” Then, he pretended to look at a watch and said, “Oh shit, I need to get going. See you guys later!”
...And Colby knew that Sam didn’t have anywhere to be. But he knew that he was giving Colby the opportunity to do the thing he wanted to do all those weeks ago.
“So, uh, Y/N,” Colby stumbled, “do, you, uh, wanna maybe like...goonadatewithme?”
“Huh?”
Colby squeezed his eyes shut and said more slowly, “Would you wanna go on a date with me?”
There was a pause, and he worried that you were mad. But then, you leaned in, placing a soft kiss on his cheek and said, “I was beginning to think you’d never ask.”
“So, is that a yes?”
“It’s a yes. It’s a definite yes.”
And it was then that Colby decided that maybe, just maybe, taking that stupid fucking philosophy class wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

long story short: the division (5) ✧ sam and colby
long story short ✧ a parallel universe snc au | ao3
disclaimer: i do not own any aspect of the karate kid universe. does not *totally* follow the karate kid canon (i’ve taken a few creative liberties).
summary: sam and colby realize they will have to be on opposite sides for the sake of plot.
word count: 1,049
warning(s): kinda angsty, colby feeling insecure
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Colby felt like he had a pit in his stomach when he went to the cafeteria for lunch. Something told him that something very, very wrong was going to happen. He wasn’t sure what, but he was sure that whatever it was, wasn’t going to be good in the slightest. But he was trying to tune out that little voice in his head. He had Sam. He had Sam and he was going to be fine. He was going to be fine because he had Sam. Nothing bad would happen so long as Sam was around. Right? Well, maybe not. Plenty of things had gone wrong with Sam around. But, at least if Sam was with him, Colby knew he could get through it. It was Sam and Colby vs. the World, after all.
After getting whatever was being served for lunch and paying for it, Colby looked around to find where Arden and Sam had sat. Eventually, he saw them at a table in a far corner of the cafeteria.
“So, how are you guys doing trying to survive this hellscape?” Colby asked, sitting beside Sam and across from Arden.
“She’s making me join Cobra Kai,” Sam grumbled, stabbing his fork at what Colby could only assume to be lasagna.
Colby’s brows furrowed together. Cobra Kai? The name seemed familiar. Was that the name on the jacket that Johnny guy was wearing at the beach? So, weren’t Cobra Kai the bad guys? Why would Sam have to be one of the bad guys?
“I’ve told you, Golbach,” Arden said, “it’s necessary. We have to work from both sides of the story to make sure everything gets fixed.”
Both sides of the story? Did that mean…? No, she couldn’t possibly mean that. There was no way in hell that Arden was suggesting that Sam and Colby, effectively, pretend to be enemies. There was no way. No fucking way.
Arden took note of the look on Colby’s face, and she sighed. “It’s just for a few months, tops. If we can get this story back on track, you two will be able to return to your universe and live out your lives and everyone in this universe will live out their lives. There will be no worries of ruining another universe. You just have to get through this, and you can return to life as normal.”
“But…” Colby paused, realizing he had no other argument than this fucking sucks, so he grumbled, “I…I guess that works.”
For the rest of lunch, Arden explained how Colby would need to get closer with Daniel and Sam would have to get closer with the Cobras. Colby tried to focus—he really did. He knew that what Arden was saying as important, but knowing that he would have to pretend to not like his best friend in the whole world felt like someone had carved out his heart and stomped on it. It fucking hurt.
And…Fuck. Hadn’t Sam said something about the Cobras bullying Daniel? Did that mean…No. No it couldn’t. Right? Sam couldn’t possibly bully Colby. Even if it was pretend. No. He didn’t have it in him. Right?
Colby barely noticed when lunch ended and everyone began to leave. It wasn’t til Sam was pushing on his shoulder that Colby realized he needed to go, too.
“Wait, Sam,” Colby said as Sam began to walk away to his next class.
“Yeah?” Sam turned around.
“Are we…Are we actually going to do this? Pretend to be enemies?”
Sam’s shoulders deflated. “I don’t see how we have any other choice. As much as I hate it, Arden has a point.”
“But…”
“Hey, it won’t be that bad. We only have to fake hate each other in public,” Sam said. “And how much are we really going to be around each other to have to act as enemies?”
Colby wanted to say more, but he knew that they needed to get to class. So, he quietly asked, “Can we talk more about this at the apartment?”
Sam nodded. “Of course. We’ll get through this, you know.”
“Yeah. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck.”
Tumblr media
Colby sat on his bed, feeling like all the air had left his lungs. He was fucking dreaded this conversation with Sam. He knew what they needed to do. They both did. Their was no getting around it. Colby had fucked up, and Colby needed to fix it. And, besides, the only person who knew how to get them home was going to make sure they helped fix the problem Colby created.
“I know why we have to do this,” Colby began. “But…I just, I guess I’m scared?”
Sam frowned. “Why are you scared?”
Colby chewed on his bottom lip, trying to organize his thoughts. Everything about this was so confusing, but he wanted—no, needed—to get this off his chest. “It’s just…I’m scared that if we have to pretend to be enemies for so long, we might end up becoming enemies. And I don’t think I could handle losing my best friend.”
Sam sighed. “I get that. I’m scared of that, too. But, at the end of the day, we both know it’s not real. And we live together, so if one of us does something that really hurt the other, we can talk it out and not just sit on our frustration.”
“Yeah, I guess,” Colby mumbled. “I just…Do you promise that you won’t let this craziness ruin our friendship?”
“Of course I do, Colby. I’d never let anything ruin everything we’ve built together. It’s Sam and Colby vs. the World.”
Colby snorted. He was glad he was having this talk. Under normal circumstances, he probably would’ve internalized his concerns and let them build until everything boiled over. Though, he supposed that the only reason he was able to voice his feelings about this was because, at the root of it all, he was far more scared about fucking things up in this universe.
“I have to admit, though,” Colby said, “I’m surprised we’ve even made this far, since we’re such shit actors.”
Sam snorted. “Speak for yourself. People still think the killing best friend prank was real because of my performance in it.”
“Bro, too soon.”
“Bro, it’s been five years!”
“Bro.”

I’ve read almost all your stuff except the fandoms idk (you have got me into Sam and Colby tho). So like…what’s the best series in your opinion that you have wrote? I wanna do some rereading or possibly new reading with your opinion, thank you :)
snc need to pay me for promoting them 😤😤 (jk...unless)
also thank you!! absolutely mind-boggling that someone would like my writing that much lmaoo
my best series is... evermore. poured my heart and soul into that series lol
let's ride is also really good, plus it has a lot of things to read in it and there's a lot more on the way.
i've just started just like her, so there's only one chapter out atm, but it's gonna be good. im still planning it, but it should end up being around 28ish chapters if all goes well.
miss american pie is also good, but i haven't done much with it yet.
if you want some non-romance:
the case of the karate killer was fun (note: im trying to get an epilogue for it out but the story is pretty complete without it, plus im trying to write more series/oneshots for it),
as well as the two series under sam and colby vs. the universes (with a third one on the way eventually).
