Happy Fall!
Afterlife by Julia Alvarez
Antonia Vega, the immigrant writer at the center of Afterlife, has had the rug pulled out from under her. She has just retired from the college where she taught English when her beloved husband, Sam, suddenly dies. And then more jolts: her bighearted but unstable sister disappears, and Antonia returns home one evening to find a pregnant, undocumented teenager on her doorstep. Antonia has always sought direction in the literature she loves - lines from her favorite authors play in her head like a soundtrack - but now she finds that the world demands more of her than words.
Afterlife is a compact, nimble, and sharply droll novel. Set in this political moment of tribalism and distrust, it asks: What do we owe those in crisis in our families, including - maybe especially - members of our human family? How do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves? And how do we stay true to those glorious souls we have lost?
At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier
1838: James and Sadie Goodenough have settled where their wagon got stuck - in the muddy, stagnant swamps of northwest Ohio. They and their five children work relentlessly to tame their patch of land, buying saplings from a local tree man known as John Appleseed so they can cultivate the fifty apple trees required to stake their claim on the property. But the orchard they plant sows the seeds of a long battle. James loves the apples, reminders of an easier life back in Connecticut; while Sadie prefers the applejack they make, an alcoholic refuge from brutal frontier life.
1853: Their youngest child Robert is wandering through Gold Rush California. Restless and haunted by the broken family he left behind, he has made his way alone across the country. In the redwood and giant sequoia groves he finds some solace, collecting seeds for a naturalist who sells plants from the new world to the gardeners of England. But you can run only so far, even in America, and when Robert's past makes an unexpected appearance he must decide whether to strike out again or stake his own claim to a home at last.
Harvest of Secrets by Ellen Crosby
It’s harvest season at Montgomery Estate Vineyard - the busiest time of year for winemakers in Atoka, Virginia. A skull is unearthed near Lucie Montgomery’s family cemetery, and the discovery of the bones coincides with the arrival of handsome, wealthy aristocrat Jean-Claude de Marignac. He’s come to be the head winemaker at neighboring La Vigne Cellars, but he’s no stranger to Lucie - he was her first crush twenty years ago when she spent a summer in France.
Not long after his arrival, Jean-Claude is found dead, and while there is no shortage of suspects who are angry or jealous of his ego and overbearing ways, suspicion falls on Miguel Otero, an immigrant worker at La Vigne, who recently quarreled with Jean-Claude. When Miguel disappears, Lucie receives an ultimatum from her own employees: prove Miguel’s innocence or none of the immigrant community will work for her during the harvest. As Lucie hunts for Jean-Claude’s killer and continues to search for the identity of the skeleton abandoned in the cemetery, she is blindsided by a decades-old secret that shatters everything she thought she knew about her family. Now facing a wrenching emotional choice, Lucie must decide whether it’s finally time to tell the truth and hurt those she loves the most, or keep silent and let past secrets remain dead and buried.
This is the ninth volume of the "Wine Country Mysteries" series.
The Cider Shop Rules by Julie Anne Lindsey
The Fall Festival is in full swing. Civil War reenactors from three counties are partaking in Blossom Valley’s tribute to John Brown. Blue Ridge Mountain foliage is in full bloom. And best of all is Jacob Potter’s pumpkin farm where his hay rides, piglet races, pumpkin picking and corn maze are time-honored draws for locals and tourists alike. That’s why it’s such a shock when Mr. Potter is found dead, hidden under a tarp in the back of Winnie’s pickup truck. This certainly betrays Potter’s reputation as one of the town’s most popular citizens. Fortunately, when it comes to solving a murder, no one has a patch on Winnie. Now, all eyes are on her to do it. Unfortunately, that includes those of the killer who’ll do anything to keep an orchard full of secrets buried.
This is the third volume of the "A Cider Shop Mystery" series.

June 25 ZODIAC
Close to home and strict: they are grouchy and variable simultaneously. They can undoubtedly squeeze into varying backgrounds and effectively switch companions. They are solid and extremely influential individuals. Their interests are areas of strength for extremely, their propensities frequently mislead them. They are drawn to the other gender. In the event that you are cautious you will come by a decent outcome. Barely any times in their lives will they fall affected by others. They have solid respect and a great deal of adoration for studies, which would ultimately raise them to a conspicuous scholastic position. They frequently carry on with a desolate existence, and for the most part concentrate abroad. A lady brought into the world on this day is very lovely, with a well disposed, dynamic, fairly hurried outside. In any case, she docilely quiets down. She will have youngsters and will be exceptionally joined to them. Somewhat modest and not fair 100% of the time. She tracks down joy in helping other people and really focusing on the feeble. Individuals conceived today are by and large miserable in their childhood. Nonetheless, everything improves as the years go by: their position settles, they become prosperous, and their state of mind improves decisively. Archifutures 6: Agency
Since 2015 the &beyond collective of writers, editors and designers, have made six volumes of the Archifutures series together with dpr-barcelona for the Future Architecture platform.
Tumblr media
Together they form a document of the changing zeitgeist of the last five years in innovative and critical architectural thinking amongst young practitioners and other related fields. The series includes the following five volumes: The Museum, The Studio, The Site, Thresholds and The Apocalypse.
Tumblr media
And now &beyond brings you Archifutures Volume 6: Agency, a more hopeful and optimistic field guide to reclaiming the future of architecture.
Tumblr media
All six volumes were designed by Diana Portela (in Porto), contain special illustrations by our own Janar Siniloo (Berlin) and were edited by various constellations of myself, Sophie Lovell, and Fiona Shipwright (also Berlin), George Kafka (in Athens) and Rob Wilson (in London).
Tumblr media
For each book in the series since its inception, &beyond has sampled the prevailing mood in the room at the FA annual conferences and tempered it with our own experiences to make a volume reflecting the zeitgeist of that moment – expressed through selected projects as well as contributions by invited external experts. As the series developed, each new volume has also reflected a feeling of growing urgency relating to the need for deep, universal, systemic change.  Little did we all realise during the FA conference in February 2020 that we were already hurtling towards a global pandemic that was to massively shift the human paradigm and accelerate calls for change.
Tumblr media
As we began to commission material for the book during the lockdown in March, some contributors adapted their material slightly to reflect the new circumstances, but most projects, I’m glad to say, already reflected their authors’ assumptions that the need for essential change was a clear given: Disaster is upon us.
Tumblr media
Volume 6 is a call to Agency as well as a call to Action. To build agency we first need reflection followed by new narratives that can then progress into action. So in the first chapter, Reflection, I discuss the first five years of the Future Architecture platform with its founder Matevž Čelik and talk about and how this extraordinary collective entity has gathered momentum and sharpened its mission towards one of greater critical production – and becoming an agent of change.
The second chapter is about rectifying imbalance, by turning the Tables (of power), Marina Otero Verzier’s essay here highlights a shift in architectural practice away from commodities and a “nostalgia for a position at the table” towards commons-oriented strategies, politicisation and redistribution of power. It is joined by Miguel Braceli’s Biblioteca Abierta in Venezuela, and the Office of Human Resources’ Agro Commune/ challenging colonial hegemony of production.
Tumblr media
Straight lines as impositions of order and separation are a legacy from the past that still very much define our present. Chapter three, Lines, shows that our thinking and responses need to be much less linear and much more inclusive. In her powerful essay called Out of Line, Marie-Louise Richards from the Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm traces threads of narratives that have been omitted or erased through discriminatory structures. This is followed by projects from 45°N and the Institute of Linear Research, that both use geography to explore and engage with communities and landscapes.
Tumblr media
Our fourth chapter covers a topic that has interested the &beyond collective for some time: ruin. “Ruin” is a term that has fascinated architects for centuries, but now we begin to see it in a different context to the usual romantic nostalgia for the past. Here, Will Jennings takes us on a journey through the tropes of the city in ruins and speculative renderings to ask: “What will the ruins of neoliberalism look like?” And Jason Rhys-Parry’s essay An Anticipatory Theory of Ruin Ecology, states that ruins will become the architecture of default rather than the exception and that architects should, therefore anticipate this by designing them to be biodiversity hotspots for the future.
Tumblr media
For the fifth chapter, Storytelling, we engineered an exchange between emerging practitioners Paula Brücke and Arian Lehner of Mies.TV and Justinas Dūdėnas and Andrius Ropolas from new platform members Architectūros Fondas. Their exchange became a fantastic conversation and interviewer/interviewee ping-pong about story-making for accessibility and empowerment. Also in this chapter, Un-war Space Lab share their love letter to the Neretva River as the subject of their research about ecologies of violent spatial transformation. And the melancholic illustrations of Constantinos Marcou which form part of his narrative “The Great Island of Replicas” hint at storytelling about the divided island of Cyprus.
Tumblr media
Agency, as the capacity to act and exert power or influence, comes through engagement. Therefore, the sixth and final chapter of this volume, Engage, is about how to achieve that. It is also about creating change through direct action. Here, Sam Turner from Architects Climate Action Network shares his activist organisation’s strategies for engagement. We also have an interview in this chapter with Thomas Aquilina – co-director of the London-based New Architecture Writers – about race and space, and how the N.A.W. are developing the critical journalistic skills and editorial connections of Black and minority-ethnic emerging writers in order to generate tools for alternative forms of architecture-making. Then, with their Smart Covenant project, Jack Minchella and his team from Dark Matter Labs share an innovative new legal construct for collective land value infrastructure.
We end the book with another pairing we made between Critical Practice and Unfolding Pavilion. We asked both groups to get together and come up with a form of “mixed media manifesto” for better practice. In response, they curated a “guerilla collaboration” and, to our delight, invited six further practices to create double page spreads of “take-away manifestos”. These were: Arturo Franco and Ana Román, Recetas Urbanas, Coloco, Point Supreme, ateliermob and BC Architects and Studies.
Finally, it is sometimes hard to have hope in the face of the enormous problems the world is facing right now, but the projects and practices featured in this and the five previous volumes of Archifuturesdo indicate that we already have the ideas and skills to make the necessary changes – it is just that the means for achieving them are unevenly distributed.

The BTK Killer
Tumblr media
[WARNING: Graphic Content] Between 1974 and 1991, Dennis Rader killed ten people in the Wichita, Kansas metro area under the name “BTK” for “bind, torture, kill”. January 15 1974, four members of the Otero family were murdered. The victims were Joseph (38), Julie (33), and two children: Joseph Jr. (9) and Josephine (11). Their bodies were discovered by the family’s eldest child, Charlie as he returned home from school. These were his first known victims.
Early 1978, Rader sent a letter to television station KAKE in Wichita, claiming responsibility for the murder of the Oteros, Kathryn Bright, Shirley Vian and Nancy Fox. He suggested many possible names for himself, including the one that stuck: BTK. He demanded media attention in this letter, and it was finally announced that Wichita did indeed have a serial killer at large.
A poem was enclosed titled “Oh! Death to Nancy”, a parody of the lyrics to the American folk song “O Death”. In the letter, he claimed to be driven to kill by “factor X”, which he characterised as a supernatural element that also motivated Jack the Ripper, Son of Sam and Hillside Strangler murders.
He also intended to kill others, such as Anna Williams (63), she escaped death by returning home much later than expected. Rader explained during his confession that he became obsessed with Williams and was “absolutely livid” when she evaded him. He spent hours waiting at her home, but became impatient and left when she didn’t return home from visiting friends.
Marine Hedge (53) was found on May 5 1985. Rader had killed her on April 27, and he took her dead body to his church where he was the president of the church council. Rader had previously-stored black plastic sheeting and other materials at the church in preparation for the murder and then later dumped the body in a remote ditch. He had called his plan “Project Cookie”.
In 1988, after the murders of three members of the Fager family, a letter was received from someone claiming to be the BTK killer, in which the author of the letter denied being the perpetrator of the Fager murders. The author credited the killer with having done “admirable work”. It was not proven until 2005 that this letter was, in fact, written by Rader. He is not considered by police to have committed this crime.
Additionally, two women Rader had stalked in the 1980s and one he had stalked in the mid-1990s filed restraining orders against him; one of them also moved away. His final victim, Dolores E. Davis was found on February 1 1991, she had been killed on January 19.
In his letters to the police, Rader asked if his writings, if put on a floppy disk, could be traced or not. The police answered his question and said it would be safe to use it; police were able to find metadata hidden on the floppy disk that led to Rader. He was arrested after DNA from a pap smear his daughter took was tested against samples from the crime scenes.

Cleveland Indians-Minnesota Twins Series Preview
9.6.19-Adam Plutko RHP (6-4) 4.53 ERA Vs. Michael Pineda RHP (11-5) 4.11 ERA
9.7.19-Aaron Civale RHP (3-3) 1.94 ERA Vs. Jake Odorizzi RHP (14-6) 3.61 ERA
9.8.19-Mike Clevinger RHP (10-2) 2.71 ERA Vs. TBA
The Indians At A Glance- The Indians have struggled a bit since the Twins last saw them. They are (10-13) since August 11th and are 6.5 games behind the Twins in the American League Central. Since we last saw the Indians, Jose Ramirez broke his hand, Tyler Naquin tore his right ACL, and Corey Kluber tried to comeback, but re-injured an abdominal muscle during his rehab. Carlos Carrasco, Dan Otero, and Jordan Luplow are all back from different injuries. The Indians split four games with the White Sox this week. Francisco Lindor hit 5-for-16 with a homer and two RBI’s against the Sox. The Indians were held to just one hit on Thursday against Reynaldo Lopez. The starting pitching has still been solid for the Tribe. Aaron Civale has been tremendous with a 1.94 ERA, Shane Bieber keeps putting up good starts, and Zach Plesac has been pretty good. Carlos Carrasco has allowed five runs in two innings out of the bullpen. Brad Hand had a terrible August with a 5.73 ERA in the month, but has converted his last four saves. Nick Wittgren has gotten a couple of save opportunities given Hand’s struggles. Everyone should be available out of the bullpen for the Indians to start this season.
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins had a tremendous ten-game road trip, where they went (8-2). They played terrible last Saturday against the Tigers and were shut down by Eduardo Rodriguez on Wednesday. Besides those two games, the Twins were perfect and the trip went a long way in helping the Twins inch closer to clinching the division. Miguel Sano went 4-for-8 with a homer, three RBI’s and four walks against the Red Sox. Luis Arraez hit 11-for-27 with three doubles and 2 RBI’s on the road trip. The Twins offense was held to two hits on Thursday night, but drew nine walks. The starting pitching has been decent, but not great lately. Martin Perez threw a good game on Thursday, Jose Berrios went only five innings on Wednesday, and Lewis Thorpe got a bulk of the work on Monday following Randy Dobnak’s opener effort. Sam Dyson flew back to Minneapolis to check out his barking shoulder. He will be out for awhile. Trevor Hildenberger and Fernando Romero have yet to appear in a game yet since their recalls. Tyler Duffey has a scoreless streak of 15 2/3 innings, where he has struck out 27 men. Trevor May has struck out 22 men over his last 16 innings of work. Those guys have been rolling lately along with Sergio Romo and Taylor Rogers. That forms a nice quarter of relievers and the team could have Sam Dyson and Trevor Hildenberger in the mix if they get healthy and right.
What To Watch For- The Indians are (7-6) against the Twins in 2019. The Twins are (3-4) against the Tribe in games at Target Field. Adam Plutko has a 4.73 ERA in three games against the Twins. Michael Pineda is (1-0) with a 3.60 ERA in two career starts against the Tribe. Aaron Civale threw six innings and allowed a run in his only career start against the Twins. Jake Odorizzi is (3-4) with a 4.42 ERA in twelve starts versus the Indians. Francisco Lindor has two career homers off him. Mike Clevinger is (3-2) with a 2.87 ERA in twelve games against the Twins. This is a big series for the Twins, who can basically take the division lead handily with a series win. The Indians have been slumping lately and need a sweep if they want to win the division.

Dennis Rader: BTK Killer
Early Life
Dennis Lynn Rader was born on March 9, 1945, in Pittsburg, Kansas, and grew up in Wichita. The oldest of four sons, he enjoyed a seemingly normal childhood, reportedly masking such disturbing behavior as hanging stray animals. Rader dropped out of college and joined the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1960s. After returning to Wichita, he married his wife, Paula, in 1971, and worked for an outdoor-supply company for about a year. In 1974, he began a lengthy stint as an employee of ADT Security Services.
First Murders
On January 15, 1974, Rader strangled to death four members of the Otero family in their Wichita home—parents Joseph and Julie, and two of their children, Josephine and Joseph Jr. — before leaving with a watch and a radio. Strangulation and souvenir-taking would become part of his modus operandi or pattern of behavior. He also left semen at the scene and later said that he derived sexual pleasure from killing. The Oteros' 15-year-old son, Charlie, came home later that day and discovered the bodies. Rader struck again a few months later: On April 4, 1974, he waited in the apartment of a young woman named Kathryn Bright, before stabbing and strangling her when she returned home. Rader also twice shot her brother, Kevin, though he survived. Kevin later described Rader as "an average-sized guy, bushy mustache, 'psychotic' eyes," according to a TIME magazine article. In October 1974, Rader placed a letter in a public library book in which he took responsibility for killing the Oteros. The letter ended up with a local newspaper, and the poorly written note gave authorities some idea of who they were dealing with. Rader wrote, "It's hard to control myself. You probably call me 'psychotic with sexual perversion hang-up.'" He warned that he would strike again, noting, "The code words for me will bind them, torture them, kill them, B.T.K." The initials stuck, and the murderer came to be known by variations of the "BTK killer" moniker, or simply "BTK."Rader's next known crimes occurred in 1977. In March of that year, he tied up and strangled Shirley Vian, after locking her children in the bathroom. In December, he strangled Nancy Fox in her home, and then called the police to report the homicide. Shortly afterward, in January 1978, Rader sent a poem to a local newspaper about the Vian killing. Several weeks later, he sent a letter to a local television station stating that he was responsible for killing Vian, Fox and another unknown victim. He also made allusions to several other notorious killers, including Ted Bundy and David Berkowitz, also known as the "Son of Sam."Despite his cat-and-mouse game with authorities, Rader was able to keep the lid on his secret, murderous life. Reportedly an attentive husband, he and his wife had a son in 1975 and a daughter in 1978. The next year, Rader graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in administration of justice. Still, he continued to taunt authorities and appeared to be poised to strike again. In April 1979, Rader waited in an elderly woman’s home but left before she returned. He sent her a letter to let her know that BTK had been there. In an effort to catch him, the authorities released the 1977 recording of his phone call to police, hoping that someone might recognize the voice. After several years without a known crime, Rader killed his neighbor Marine Hedge on April 27, 1985. Her body was found days later on the side of the road. The following year, he killed Vicki Wegerle in her home. His final known victim, Dolores Davis, was taken from her home on January 19, 1991.
Return, Arrest, and Imprisonment
Over the next several years, BTK dropped off the map as Rader focused on work and family life. He had left ADT in the late 1980s and started working for the Wichita suburb of Park City as a compliance supervisor in 1991. In his new position, Rader was known to be a stickler for the rules. He measured the height of people's lawns and chased stray animals while toting a tranquilizer gun. According to reports, Rader took pleasure in exerting his limited authority over his neighbors and other members of the community. He was also a Boy Scout troop leader and president of his church council. With many news stories marking the 30th anniversary of the Otero murders, BTK resurfaced in 2004. Rader sent local media outlets and authorities several letters filled with items related to his crimes, including pictures, a word puzzle and an outline for the "BTK Story." He also left packages with clues, including a computer disk that ultimately led authorities to Rader's church. Investigators also noticed his white van on security tapes of some of the package drop-off areas and cemented their case by obtaining a DNA sample from Rader's daughter. Rader was arrested on February 25, 2005, and later charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder. His neighbors and fellow church members were stunned by the news, unable to believe that the man they knew was the serial killer that had haunted the area for so long.Rader pleaded guilty to all of the charges on June 27, 2005. As part of his plea, he gave the horrifying details of his crimes in court. Many observers noted that he described the gruesome events without any sign of remorse or emotion. Because he committed his crimes before the state's 1994 reinstatement of the death penalty, Rader was sent to El Dorado Correctional Facility to serve his 10 life sentences.
Depictions in Pop Culture
Rader's story inspired the Stephen King novella A Good Marriage, which was published as part of the 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars and later became a feature film. In 2016, forensic psychology professor Katherine Ramsland published Confession of a Serial Killer: The Untold Story of Dennis Rader, the BTK Killer, which revealed that the notorious murderer had planned to claim an 11th victim before he was arrested. In October 2017 Netflix's crime drama, Mindhunter, was released to critical acclaim. One of the serial killer characters known as ADT Man on the show is based on Rader.

KHEMMIS | ZACH, PHIL AND DAN DISCUSS THEIR NON-METAL MUSICAL INFLUENCES
Denver based four-piece KHEMMIS release their third studio album Desolation last week via 20 Buck Spin in North America and Nuclear Blast Entertainment for the rest of the world. Having already dominated the US scene, with their previous full length release Hunted being named 'Album of the Year 2016' by Decibel magazine, it's now time for KHEMMIS to take over Europe with their crushing doom-infused heavy metal. We spoke to Zach, Phil and Dan from the band about their non-metal musical influences and if any of their picks influenced the creation of their new album, Desolation - watch the third part here:  https://youtu.be/epX6xKjm_gE ICYMI: Part 1: https://youtu.be/j_7eJIHjEh0 Part 2:  https://youtu.be/MStrj-UVl-U The band commented on the new release: "Desolation is the clearest distillation yet of who we are as a band; a celebration of heavy metal that doesn't sacrifice our focus on personal, emotionally-charged songwriting. Thank you all for your support and we'll see you on the road!" Desolation is out now via 20 Buck Spin in North America and via Nuclear Blast Entertainment throughout the rest of the world. The bewitching cover artwork for the new album was created by Sam Turner (Black Breath, 3 Inches Of Blood, In The Company Of Serpents).  Desolation is available for order now: All formats:  http://nblast.de/KhemmisDesolation *Limited Edition* Orange Vinyl: http://nblast.de/khemmisdesolationNB *Limited Edition* Digisleeve CD: http://nblast.de/KhemmisDesolationCD *Limited Edition* Black Vinyl: http://nblast.de/KhemmisDesolationVinyl Order on iTunes to receive 'Isolation' and 'Bloodletting' as instant-grat tracks: http://nblast.de/KhemmisDesolationIT "This Denver quartet's six-track follow-up to 2016's Hunted is a thundering blend of NWOBHM riffs shot through with sternum-shuddering doom." **** - Planet Rock "Masters of epic, melodic and elegantly intricate doom metal anthems....this album is both adventurous and disarmingly timeless." - Prog Magazine "Desolation's six anthems of stadium-striving power is an uplifting collection of soaring vocals, lead guitar showmanship and grooving gallop...." - Metal Hammer "On Desolation, their third album, they come on like a cross between the classic '80s metal of genre kings Candlemass and fiddly Canadian prog lords Rush - and it's a mixture that's entirely agreeable!" - Kerrang! Magazine The Desolation track list reads as follows: 1. Bloodletting 2. Isolation 3. Flesh To Nothing 4. The Seer 5. Maw Of Time 6. From Ruin  Watch the official video for 'Isolation':  https://youtu.be/xZd2liHm8P8 Watch the official visualizer for 'Bloodletting':  https://youtu.be/P073izSb9bQ

Khemmis' passion for progressive and soulful heavy music is more evident than ever. Though undeniably influenced by doom and classic metal, to tag them with those labels doesn’t do justice to what’s accomplished on Desolation; a perfect representation of modern heavy metal in 2018 that integrates the past in a way only possible in the present. It's impossible to ignore the lengths that the four piece go to, to master their craft and produce a highly unique form of heavy sound. Their magnificently uplifting, yet sorrowful groovy riffs weave you along on an unparalleled journey. Desolation is not just the best Khemmis record to date but a testament to the quality that heavy metal is still capable of. From the stadium-sized opening notes of 'Bloodletting' it is immediately evident that Khemmis is again putting distance between themselves and their earlier influences, to inform a sound that is singularly their own. 'Isolation' - which the band recently aired live in the US on their tour with Enslaved, Wolves In The Throne Room and Myrkur - is the album’s lead single and most immediate track, with the classic metal melodies the band have become revered for shining throughout. On epic closer 'From Ruin' and throughout the entirety of the album, the lead vocals and melodies of Phil Pendergast are the clearest, most powerful and best arranged that the band has achieved. Working for the third time with Dave Otero at Flatline Audio in Denver, the band and producer now have the familiarity and mutual experience to arrive at the perfect symbiosis of songwriting, arrangement and production value. Desolation is an album that fans of Paradise Lost, Candlemass, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Spirit Adrift, Pallbearer, Yob, Warning, Atlantean Kodex, High On Fire, Metallica and Corrosion Of Conformity should not miss.
Tumblr media
Formed in 2012 in Denver USA, Khemmis have released two albums to date. 2015‘s Absolution and 2016‘s Hunted paint a unique portrait; encompassing spiralling progressive doom, fuzz-toned stoner riffs, syrupy sludge and churning classic grooves. They transcend traditional doom forming elegant yet dramatic tracks, conveying their unique sense of melancholy edged with a sense of foreboding. Debut record Absolution earned the four piece outright critical praise from the underground, plus achieving them a place within Decibel Magazine's 'Top 40 Albums of the Year' list allowing their impact to slowly start seeping into the mainstream consciousness. Hunted broke down those final barriers in the USA, earning Khemmis more widespread recognition, ranging from glowing reviews at Metal Sucks, Metal Injection and Pitchfork, to earning them a spot in Rolling Stone‘s '20 Best Metal Albums of 2016' list and Decibel's highly sought after 'Album of the Year' accolade.

Small-time criminals Caesar Enrico "Rico" Bandello (Edward G. Robinson) and his friend Joe Massara (Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) move to Chicago to seek their fortunes. Rico joins the gang of Sam Vettori (Stanley Fields), while Joe wants to be a dancer. Olga (Glenda Farrell) becomes his dance partner and girlfriend.
Joe tries to drift away from the gang and its activities, but Rico makes him participate in the robbery of the nightclub where he works. Despite orders from underworld overlord "Big Boy" (Sidney Blackmer) to all his men to avoid bloodshed, Rico guns down crusading crime commissioner Alvin McClure during the robbery, with Joe as an aghast witness.
Rico accuses Sam of becoming soft and seizes control of his organization. Rival boss "Little Arnie" Lorch (Maurice Black) tries to have Rico killed, but Rico is only grazed. He and his gunmen pay Little Arnie a visit, after which Arnie hastily departs for Detroit. The Big Boy eventually gives Rico control of all of Chicago's Northside.
Rico becomes concerned that Joe knows too much about him. He warns Joe that he must forget about Olga and join him in a life of crime. Rico threatens to kill both Joe and Olga unless he accedes, but Joe refuses to give in. Olga calls Police Sergeant Flaherty and tells him Joe is ready to talk, just before Rico and his henchman Otero (George E. Stone) come calling. Rico finds, to his surprise, that he is unable to take his friend's life. When Otero tries to do the job himself, Rico wrestles the gun away from him, though not before Joe is wounded. Hearing the shot, Flaherty and another cop give chase and kill Otero. With information provided by Olga, Flaherty proceeds to crush Rico's organization.
Desperate and alone, Rico "retreats to the gutter from which he sprang." While hiding in a flophouse, he becomes enraged when he learns that Flaherty has called him a coward in the newspaper. He foolishly telephones the cop to announce he is coming for him. The call is traced, and he is gunned down by Flaherty behind a billboard - an advertisement featuring dancers Joe and Olga - and, dying, utters his final words, "Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?"
