I just found one amazing paralel between Stardew Valley and Ready Player one
in ready player two, the sequel of ready player one, it says that Samantha's grandmother is named Evelyn
and Evelyn is Alex's grandmother in Stardew Valley.
Both of them had lost their parents in a tragic way
I'm gonna cry

Fluff of the day
Wade and Samantha from Ready Player One. These two really were cute together and I fully respect the director's decision not to make them both overweight at the start and then skinny at the end because they were actually teenagers and he didn't want to force their bodies to go through that. Yeah he could have used fat suits but it wouldn't have been the same and you know it.
Tumblr media
Also moving forward all posts will go up at 10 am CST so there's more time for me to reblog it on both accounts so it gains more traction. Sorry not sorry 😅

By "roles" I mean playing a different character; someone playing one character across a franchise only counts as one thing for the purposes of this poll
Below are some of this actor's roles. Please only check after voting!
House of the Dragon as Alicent Hightower
Bates Motel as Emma Decody
Thoroughbreds as Amanda
Ready Player One as Art3mis / Samantha

ChatGPT and the movie ‘Her’ are just the latest example of the ‘sci-fi feedback loop’
by Rizwan Virk, Faculty Associate and PhD Candidate in Human and Social Dimensions of Science and Technology at Arizona State University
Tumblr media
In May 2024, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman sparked a firestorm by referencing the 2013 movie “Her” to highlight the novelty of the latest iteration of ChatGPT.
Within days, actor Scarlett Johansson, who played the voice of Samantha, the AI girlfriend of the protagonist in the movie “Her,” accused the company of improperly using her voice after she had spurned their offer to make her the voice of ChatGPT’s new virtual assistant. Johansson ended up suing OpenAI and has been invited to testify before Congress.
Tumblr media
This tiff highlights a broader interchange between Hollywood and Silicon Valley that’s called the “sci-fi feedback loop.” The subject of my doctoral research, the sci-fi feedback loop explores how science fiction and technological innovation feed off each other. This dynamic is bidirectional and can sometimes play out over many decades, resulting in an ongoing loop.
Fiction sparks dreams of Moon travel
One of the most famous examples of this loop is Moon travel.
Jules Verne’s 1865 novel “From the Earth to the Moon” and the fiction of H.G. Wells inspired one of the first films to visualize such a journey, 1902’s “A Trip to the Moon.”
The fiction of Verne and Wells also influenced future rocket scientists such as Robert Goddard, Hermann Oberth and Oberth’s better-known protégé, Wernher von Braun. The innovations of these men – includingthe V-2 rocket built by von Braun during World War II – inspired works of science fiction, such as the 1950 film “Destination Moon,” which included a rocket that looked just like the V-2.
Films like “Destination Moon” would then go on to bolster public support for lavish government spending on the space program.

Creative symbiosis
The sci-fi feedback loop generally follows the same cycle.
First, the technological climate of a given era will shape that period’s science fiction. For example, the personal computing revolution of the 1970s and 1980s directly inspired the works of cyberpunk writers Neal Stephenson and William Gibson.
Then the sci-fi that emerges will go on to inspire real-world technological innovation. In his 1992 classic “Snow Crash,” Stephenson coined the term “metaverse” to describe a 3-D, video game-like world accessed through virtual reality goggles.
Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and innovators have been trying to build a version of this metaverse ever since. The virtual world of the video game Second Life, released in 2003, took a stab at this: Players lived in virtual homes, went to virtual dance clubs and virtual concerts with virtual girlfriends and boyfriends, and were even paid virtual dollars for showing up at virtual jobs.
This technology seeded yet more fiction; in my research, I discovered that sci-fi novelist Ernest Cline had spent a lot of time playing Second Life, and it inspired the metaverse of his bestselling novel “Ready Player One.”
The cycle continued: Employees of Oculus VR – now known as Meta Reality Labs – were given copies of “Ready Player One” to read as they developed the company’s virtual reality headsets. When Facebook changed its name to Meta in 2021, it did so in the hopes of being at the forefront of building the metaverse, though the company’s grand ambitions have tempered somewhat.
Tumblr media
Another sci-fi franchise that has its fingerprints all over this loop is “Star Trek,” which first aired in 1966, right in the middle of the space race.
Steve Perlman, the inventor of Apple’s QuickTime media format and player, said he was inspired by an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” in which Lt. Commander Data, an android, sifts through multiple streams of audio and video files. And Rob Haitani, the designer of the Palm Pilot’s operating system, has said that the bridge on the Enterprise influenced its interface.
In my research, I also discovered that the show’s Holodeck – a room that could simulate any environment – influenced both the name and the development of Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality glasses.
From ALICE to ‘Her’
Which brings us back to OpenAI and “Her.”
In the movie, the protagonist, Theodore, played by Joaquin Phoenix, acquires an AI assistant, “Samantha,” voiced by Johansson. He begins to develop feelings for Samantha – so much so that he starts to consider her his girlfriend.
ChatGPT-4o, the latest version of the generative AI software, seems to be able to cultivate a similar relationship between user and machine. Not only can ChatGPT-4o speak to you and “understand” you, but it can also do so sympathetically, as a romantic partner would.
There’s little doubt that the depiction of AI in “Her” influenced OpenAI’s developers. In addition to Altman’s tweet, the company’s promotional videos for ChatGPT-4o feature a chatbot speaking with a job candidate before his interview, propping him up and encouraging him – as, well, an AI girlfriend would. The AI featured in the clips, Ars Technica observed, was “disarmingly lifelike,” and willing “to laugh at your jokes and your dumb hat.”
But you might be surprised to learn that a previous generation of chatbots inspired Spike Jonze, the director and screenwriter of “Her,” to write the screenplay in the first place. Nearly a decade before the film’s release, Jonze had interacted with a version of the ALICE chatbot, which was one of the first chatbots to have a defined personality – in ALICE’s case, that of a young woman.
Tumblr media
The ALICE chatbot won the Loebner Prize three times, which was awarded annually until 2019 to the AI software that came closest to passing the Turing Test, long seen as a threshold for determining whether artificial intelligence has become indistinguishable from human intelligence.
The sci-fi feedback loop has no expiration date. AI’s ability to form relationships with humans is a theme that continues to be explored in fiction and real life.
A few years after “Her,” “Blade Runner 2049” featured a virtual girlfriend, Joi, with a holographic body. Well before the latest drama with OpenAI, companies had started developing and pitching virtual girlfriends, a process that will no doubt continue. As science fiction writer and social media critic Cory Doctorow wrote in 2017, “Science fiction does something better than predict the future: It influences it.”

🕹️👨‍💻An escape is only an escape if you still live most of your life in reality👨‍💻🕹️
🛑SPOILERS AHEAD🛑
(YES EVEN IF YOU SAW THE MOVIE)
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Read: January 27 -> January 31, 2024
BRA Score: 79/100
Favorite Quote: “No one in the world gets what they want and that’s beautiful.” - Wade, Pg?
~~~~~~~~
Book Gist: Wade is growing up in 2045, with nothing and no one to his name. His saving grace from a life of boredom and loneliness: The Hunt. The creator of the most used product in the world, The OASIS, left behind a challenge when he died 5 years ago that whoever can solve all the clues, pass every challenge, and collect every key will win his Easter Egg, which will make the winner richer than their wildest dreams, and give them full control over the OASIS. Wade isn’t the only one searching, millions of OASIS users have had their hands in the hunt, but the most dangerous is by far the Sixers of IOI, the quickly-monopolizing second tech company that will corrupt and destroy the sanctuary that Halliday built in the OASIS to turn it into another capitalist endeavor. Wade is trying to win it before IOI can, but if he is so poor he can’t even leave his school’s planet, how is supposed to solve anything?
Overall Review:
Pre-read:
The movie is by far one of my most favorite films of all time. I can pick it up at any point and immediately start quoting word for word. It’s my comfort film.
That being said, this read was highly anticipated, and I have not circled back yet to read Ready Player Two (though it’s on my list for next month because I am very excited that the sequel film was green lit).
Plot:
And, I think because I’ve lived the movie for years, I wasn’t made about how different the book was, BECAUSE my source material was the film, knowing the film was adapting the novel. I wasn’t attached one way or another on seeing parts of the book in the film. And because I have a mind for film, and how adaptions work, I could recognize why such significant parts of the story had to be changed, like the fact that there are 6 challenges (one per key and one per gate), or Daito and Sho being related, or iROK’s entire character (he drove me crazy tbh). To bring that to film would be such a struggle, because it’s so well layered and incorporated in the novel, with the pace and the plot structure, keeping that would not be plausible for a film timeframe and a bit too busy for the attention span of a film viewer.
Worldbuilding:
What I also really loved about the book was the detail! It was all so intricate and so reference heavy. It goes so much deeper in the book than it ever went in the film, and I love that. Because I’m the kind of person who can identify a detail as it is presented that’s meant to be hidden only to be very important later on, this book had me on the edge of my seat, I had no clue what would matter and what wouldn’t, which is exactly the reason why Halliday’s Hunt was so hard in the first place, so I really felt right in the middle of it all.
Romantic Sub-Plot:
Wade and Samantha’s relationship was a lot less interesting and a lot less necessary in the book, I felt. I didn’t really feel their chemistry much. I think their friendship only culminating in a relationship post-egg (or even moments before the final battle) would have been a lot better, especially if they had previously acknowledged that they had feelings for each other, but it didn’t feel right to explore that side of their relationship yet.
Wade:
Also!!!! Dude, Wade is so much fucking smarter than the film makes him!! He freaking infiltrates IOI (which is so much more awful in the book) and takes them all down from the inside and then freaking escapes!! Sam was legit just allowed anywhere she wanted and then walked out in the movie. He is a literal genius.
Cast:
Losing Daito IRL really made the stakes more intense than in the film, even with the stacks blowing up and the car chase. I was really sad for a while with that one, especially for Sho.
Do you have any unhinged Doe headcanons you've thought of so far?
WELL— Yes and no! Doe is a tough cookie! She's not deranged to the extent of Sally & Evan and that much is by design. She's like, have you ever seen Scream 5 or 6?
She's more of a Samantha Carpenter-type character in that, yes, she's a little unhinged, eccentric, very obviously traumatized and mentally ill, has internalized a lot of things that really aren't her fault, and needs DESPERATE help and intervention. BUT, but but but, she's largely harmless unless she's genuinely pushed to violence with no option (at least in her mind) of either fighting or dying.
So her levels of unhinged, all things considered, are a lot tamer where violence and murder apply and rely heavily on what point of time you find her / what level of fear & paranoia she has succumbed to!
But that’s just semantics! When I think unhinged, my mind jumps less to ‘Reasons People Will Inherently Think You’re Dangerous’ (an unfortunate but legitimate reality for Doe, who has to contend with mental health ignorance on top of everything else going on with her, which leaves her behaviour in a fog of misunderstanding bit I digress)
And I’m thinking more on the verge of ‘Chaotic Nonsense’ so with this in mind! These are some of my off-the-wall headcanons for Miss. Doebra! Haha
GRADUATED WITH HONORS FROM THE MYERS SCHOOL OF DISAPPEARING. I don't even mean this in the literal interpretation of becoming a missing person; I mean, if you turn away from her to pay attention to something else, she's mastered the art of stealth, booking it out of sight. Where did she go? Why did she run? Who knows!
Sometimes, it's a very personal matter; she's overwhelmed, maybe she's just outright flustered and not ready to show the vulnerability of expressing her emotions genuinely without the veils of the role-playing, people-pleasing masks she wears.
BUT SOMETIMES IT'S JUST TO BE A PAIN FOR THE OTHER SURVIVORS. It's to play tricks, to have fun (in short bursts), Doe is theatrical and full of energy. She's definitely the sort to give people a fright to get a laugh out of their reaction or to demonstrate her prowess in knowing all the nooks and crannies of a building.
BUT ALSO TO CAUSE DISTRESS, Doe likes escaping the chase, not just because it means she's in the clear for a time, but rather because she knows it's frustrating and even distressing for the people after her.
When she can disappear & lead killers to be tangled into her traps, only to fade into the darkness, mocking them with the sounds of her footsteps but no scratch marks or hint of where she is. She's asserting her dominance by scampering off to reset her traps & lay in wait, ready to pop out for a save & steal their attention or simply start a false trail to buy her time on a separate objective. Doe is pulling a very to-the-point fuck you to the killers. She isn't a fish in a barrel. If they want a hunt, they'll get a hunt they must work for. She is equal in all but having a weapon, she knows these grounds, she knows them to a superficial extent & depending on the players she's with, she's ready to try and turn the tables and hunt the hunters. Game on assholes. Y'know??
DOE MAY BE A SURVIVOR & VERY LITERALLY A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER (if you take both of her name meanings into play), BUT SHE HAS BITE AND SPITE! She's a chihuahua compared to the killers, but anyone who's been bitten by a small dog can tell you: SHIT STILL HURTS. AND DOE? Doe is determined to make things just as painful for the people after her in most cases. MOST because some killers do own her heart and have enough sympathy for her to not pull her tricks against them. (PHIL & RIN COUGH COUGH)
SO I'VE TALKED AT LENGTH ABOUT DOE STEALING FROM THE KILLERS TO GET SUPPLIES AND WHATNOT, but what does she do with the excess? Well, you know the meme of the survivor store in games with flashlights and whatnot? She has one SET UP at her little hideaway, a stone's throw from the campfire where her corpse lays undiscovered and where she used to watch the survivors from before she was able to understand they didn't want to hurt her, and they both earned each other trust. She doesn't actually charge money for anything she's gathered during her runs into the killer's territory and her times stalking after them. It's a 'take what you need, leave what you can' type of honour system. BUT STILL, SHE'S MADE A STORE
DOE IS MOST LIKELY TO GET STUCK IN THINGS, not in the 'oh no step-bro' way but in the 'a raccoon found a hole, has gotten in, can't get back out and is now scratching at the walls from the inside' kind of way! Doe has been saved from a very dull, painful death by the Entity on many occasions when she's tried to raccoon into a map only to get trapped. Sometimes, the killers find her, but most times, they don't, and she's left to wait in silence and darkness, sitting with her decisions until the Entity summons her for another trial.
DOE IS ALSO A DORK, AN ART NERD & CERTIFIED COMPUTER / EARLY GAMING DWEEB. Please get her started. It would be hilarious; she's so passionate that even her Aphasia can't stop her. Her words will start slurring as she keeps going, and she's starting to go non-verbal as it becomes intensely difficult but she is GESTURING WILDLY AND PASSIONATELY SHE LOVES IT
Doe's friend's enemies are her enemies, hands down. Doe is an open-minded girl, at least to the point where she'll be willing to put on an amiable mask in their presence, but she doesn't forgive & she's first to establish petty revenge in honour of her pals, whether they ask her to or not. SADHASHD
One of Doe's pals had a nasty ex who cheated on them, but they run in the same circles. Doe keeps her little ear out, peeping at the growing gossip but making sure none of the mess gets back to her poor pal, who's still hurting. Oh? They have a trip with their friends planned overseas, years in the making? How good for them! It would be a massive shame if someone would, oh, I don't know, tip off the TSA that they're carrying party starters on them, causing the entire plan to fall through and them to be placed into custody. That would be AWFUL.
Doe would not only do all of that but watch the fire and then bring the ashes to her pals to cheer them up on a rainy day when they're left feeling like they're facing the worst of the world while others go scot-free.
