Crimes That Shook Britain (North East)

John Darwin In March 2002, John Darwin, 51, paddled out to sea in his canoe near his Hartlepool home. He never returned Coastguard rescue teams and police searched for him, but all they found was Darwin's paddle.

Several weeks later, the wreckage of his canoe washed up on a beach. With no body found by April 2003, John Darwin was declared dead. His widow Anne and their two sons grieved. Until December 2007 - when Darwin walked into a police station, claiming to have amnesia.

John Darwin was reunited with his sons and Anne, who'd moved to Panama, was delighted. Only, a pjoto emerged of Anne and John in Panama, together in 2006. The couple had actually faked John's death to claim his £250,000 life insurance.

Both Darwins were jailed for over six years - him for obtaining cash by deception, her for deception and money laundering.

Michael Atherton New Year's Day 2012 - taxi driver Michael Atherton, 42, shot dead his partner Susan McGoldrick, 47, her sister Alison Turnbull, 44, and niece Tanya Turnbull, 24, at his home in Peterlee. He then turned the gun on himself.

His stepdaughter survived after fleeing via a window. It emerged Atherton had a history of domestic violence. He blamed Alison for his arrest in 2008, after a row. When he discovered Susan had gone out with her sister that night, he said there'd be trouble if he saw Alison at his home. He said he'd stay in a hotel.

Yet the women arrived home before he'd left. A row erupted and Atherton got his gun from the car.

Mary Bell On 25 May 1968, the day before her 11th birthday, Mary Bell strangled Martin Brown, 4. His body was found in a derelict house in Newcastle.

Two months later, Mary enlisted a 13-year-old friend to help strangle Brian Howe, 3. His mutilated body was found on waste ground. When detectives questioned local children, Mary and her friend acted strangely, their stories changing. Officers soon realised Mary was a killer.

The friend was acquitted and gave evidence against Mary. The court heard Mary committed the crimes 'for the pleasure and excitement of killing'. Mary Bell was convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. She was sentenced to life in detention, released aged 23, and given a new identity.

Raoul Moat Two days after being released from prison on 3 July 2010, Raoul Moat, 37, from Newcastle, went on the rampage with a sawn-off shotgun.

First he shot his ex Samantha Stobbart and her new partner Chris Brown. While on the run in Rothbury, Moat shot police officer David Rathboand in the face. Brown was killed, Stobbart injured and PC Rathboand blinded.

Police deployed armed officers in one of Britain's biggest manhunts. In a letter left with a friend, Moat declared war on officers, saying that he wouldn't stop 'until I am dead'. On 9 July, police tracked Moat to the river Coquet, leading to a stand-off. Police negotiated, but Moat shot himself the next morning.

Sadly, David Rathboand later took his own life.

Billy Dunlop - Double Jeopardy Pizza delivery girl Julie Hogg, 22, disappeared in November 1989. Eighty days later, her mother Ann found her decomposing, partially mutilated body behind a bath panel in Ann's Billingham home.

Julie's ex Billy Dunlop was charged with murder, yet juries at two trials failed to reach a verdict. He was cleared. The double jeopardy law (which meant Dunlop could not be tried again) meant he thought he'd got away with murder for 17 years.

Ann fought for double jeopardy laws to be scrapped and, in 2003. MPs backed changes allowing serious cases with compelling new evidence to be reopened. Dunlop pleaded guilty to murder in 2006, was jailed for life.

Gary Vinter = Freed to Kill Again Gary Vinter killed colleague Carl Edon, 22, in a railway workers' cabin in 1995. Vinter stabbed him 37 times, puncturing every organ. He was jailed for life, but released in 2006, after serving 10 years.

In July 2006, he married Anne White. But Vinter was recalled to prison after a New Year pub brawl. Released again in early 2008, he separated from Anne after attacking her at their home in Eston, Middlesbrough. That February, Vinter bundled his estranged wife into a car.

After holding her hostage at his mother's house, he stabbed Anne to death. He was jailed for life. In 2011, Vinter attacked Roy Whiting - killer of schoolgirl Sarah Payne - in jail.

In 2016, he received a third life sentence for trying to murder fellow 'life' Lee Newell behind bars.

NSW FLOODS: HOW ABC NORTH COAST TEAM KEPT COMMUNITY INFORMED WHILE STRANDED IN FLOOD ZONE

Teachers from the kids’ schools called on Thursday afternoon: “Come and pick them up – we’re closing for the next few days, floods are coming.” 

It wasn’t news to us. The rain had been falling in incessant glass sheets for hours. My husband, Bruce MacKenzie, and I work as reporters at ABC North Coast in Lismore, and our station had been broadcasting flood watches and warnings throughout the day.

The trouble was, the schools are 45 minutes east of Lismore and we couldn’t get to them because every road there was already under water. It happened too quickly. The situation was the same for most of us in the office – our children needed collecting. Thankfully, my parents live in a place from where they could get in and so they did a mercy dash, then babysat our children around the clock for the next week as work went into full emergency broadcast mode. 

Cyclone Debbie was no ‘Queensland only’ phenomenon. Its remnants, combined with record-breaking downpours that had already pelted our region, meant northern New South Wales bore the brunt of a clichéd ‘recipe for disaster’.

Many of us were stranded that Thursday. Chief of Staff Justine Frazier, producer Pam MacIntosh, reporter Donna Harper, and Bruce and I booked the last two rooms in a Lismore motel when it became clear we couldn’t get home. Then we all had to evacuate at 3am Friday as the city’s flood levee was about to be overtopped. Our motel went under a few hours later.

A month on, those first three days have become quite the blur. I know I didn’t change my clothes in all that time and the office air conditioner couldn’t seem to do the job when I hung my drenched socks in front of the vents to dry.  I spent a lot of those initial hours manning the station’s social media accounts, feeding an insatiable hunger for photos and ‘as-live’ videos from key locations that locals could use a basis to determine when they would need to abandon their own homes. Meanwhile, user-generated photos and videos from across the region were flowing in thick and fast showing causeways and roads washed away and tips of rooftops peeking through inland seas of brown.

Our breakfast team Joanne Shoebridge and Pam Macintosh doubled their hours on air for the next three days keeping our audiences informed with the latest official information, in between taking calls from locals who often repeated the same frustrated line: “We didn’t expect it to be so high.” 

Our six-person team grew as reporters from as far afield as Melbourne flew to our region to assist. Many of them were called in to help specifically because of their knowledge of our area:  Sydney’s James O’Brien grew up in Lismore, reporters Margie Burin and Justin Huntsdale have both spent time working out of the ABC North Coast office,  and Fiona Wyllie was a long-serving morning presenter here before she moved to hosting Statewide Drive.

For all of us, this was the biggest flood we had ever covered. Lismore, Murwillumbah, Billinudgel, Coraki are all flood towns. We’re used to a bit of putrid murky water. But this one, this one was different. It was faster and higher than we’d seen in decades. The only people who seemed to be ready for it were my 80-year-old grandparents who lost everything on their first floor, but had raised the second storey of their Lismore home after the 1974 floods got in. In the Tweed, the Bureau of Meteorology called it a 1 in 1000 year flood.

Part of my job as a features reporter was to trudge the littered streets in the aftermath, interviewing countless bewildered people who thought they’d prepared, but hadn’t successfully. There were people who’d woken up to water pouring through their windows, people who’d woken up on floating beds, people who had to swim for their lives though torrents that took the lives of others. 

The story that affected me most was that of the Greenhills Caravan Park in South Murwillumbah, the town’s only caravan park which was home to 50 permanent residents. I spoke to many who lost everything and are now living in tents at the local showground. But they considered themselves lucky. Their neighbour Mark Austen was found dead in his van that had been completely swallowed by water. 

As I walked the streets for the next few days, I had a basic routine: record interview, take photos, record video, edit, send back, do live cross, post to social media, repeat. A dozen interviews a day was nowhere near enough to tell the stories of everyone deeply affected by what had happened.

It will be many months, years even, before our region recovers and for our jobs of telling our community’s stories to be done.

'War crimes' report written with a 'gender lens'

Headlines blared today that Australian soldiers committed war crimes in Afghanistan. But none of the articles mentioned that the author has told Defence to apply a 'gender lens' to everything it does. Or that she is a feminist paid more than $4.6 million to drive Defence's politically correct cultural change agenda... #auspol #defence

Today we woke to headlines from the left-wing Fairfax and ABC media that Australia’s special forces units were involved in ‘war crimes’ in Afghanistan.

Yet there were no specific allegations from this ‘leaked’ report, which has very coincidentally hit the media just days after the Army sustained criticism for its push for ‘Xena’ women warriors and lower standards for entry into special forces.

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. 10/14 Book Deals

Good morning and happy Wednesday, everyone! How are you all doing!? I miss chatting with you guys, I hope things are going well and you’re all hanging in there. :) I’ve been trying to enjoy the spooky month with some creepy books and some decorations--I realized I’ve never really decorated for Halloween before in an overly noticeable way, so my husband and I saved up a little to get a few small things and it’s honestly made the entire place feel so fun and festive! Definitely boosting my mood as I try to make it through this semester and, well, all of life’s crap, haha. Rereads:

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: I had a solid week of nightmares each night so every time I woke up from one I’d reread a little bit of this because it’s the book equivalent of eating popcorn for dinner. When I first read this book I thought there were some shades of both “Chasing Liberty” and “My Date with the President’s Daughter” and I know McQuiston is a big 00s romcom fan so I desperately hope in the notes for the movie they requested an original song akin to the one in My Date with the President’s Daughter.

The bad:

Home Field Advantage by Dahlia Adler: look it’s kind of twofold on me for reading a book I actively disliked (highly recommended on TikTok and a YA) but like. WOW this was not for me.

The fine:

Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen: add this to the “good for her!” canon of books.

The Lady’s Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite: truly have nothing to say about this book other than “it was fine”

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil: I read this in one sitting which was maybe a mistake. It was on the better end of fine, I loved the concept, but the chapters were kind of hit or miss.

Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo: this book was so funny to me even though it wasn’t meant to be, I don’t think. The main character spends most of the book not going to class, sweating profusely (mood), getting nosebleeds after being groped by the ghost of his dead best friend, and being like “omg why does everyone keep asking if I’m gay, I’m not :(“ while simultaneously outright ogling every single man he meets. Still pretty entertaining!

The good/great:

The Lesson by Cadwell Turnbull: marketed as “War of the Worlds meets Frantz Fanon” which is pretty on the nose. Super interesting speculative fiction set in the US Virgin Islands that centers around an alien occupation of the islands and how the people who live there react. Also a sort-of-maybe warning about tech surveillance by way of the plot about the nanobots that are used as healthcare which tbh I did not see coming.

Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall: did this drag at times? Yes. Was it a little too long? Yes. Did I wish we got flashbacks of the two leads’ friendship when they were kids? Yes. However!! This book was so SWEET and there is one chapter in the middle of that had me “You have bewitched me body and soul and I love, I love, I love you”-levels of losing my mind. The epilogue made me cry which I know isn’t saying much because I cry a lot but. You know.

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh: this book is barely over 100 pages long and I spent the whole time trying to figure out how she made it so immersive with so little space. Made me want to find a primeval forest to chill out in. Loved it. Excellent cover, too.

To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers: I have to read one more book by her to officially cement Becky Chambers as a Favorite Author but wow was this good. Love a character driven, thoughtful sci-fi journey. Reminded me of the movie Arrival in tone (I also have Ted Chiang’s short story collections sitting on my shelf).

I am currently reading The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay and researching ways I can make an impact locally because all of these SC decisions are going to give me a brain aneurysm with how bad my head has hurt these past few days

A bee sanctuary

Ms Morley became an apiarist four years ago at age 76 when she realised she would need the help of bees to reach the palm pollen.

“It’s a bit dangerous to be up the tree, they’re irritable,” she stated.

“Most beekeepers are quite old individuals anyhow, so I believed how tough could it be?”

While looking into beekeeping, Ms Morley found her bees would require more than the Phoenix palms to have a correctly well balanced diet plan.

She converted her property into a bee sanctuary, filled with specially chosen nutrient-dense plants and medicinal herbs such as lemon balm, lavender, alyssum, anise hyssop, and jelly bush (manuka).
