Two main incidents.

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Choir, and a recent march.  The San Francisco Gay Men’s has a number of convicted paedophiles in it’s membership, and a number of the organizers of the march were... convicted paedophiles.

No, they weren’t joking.  Unequivocally.

Were most of the people at the march coming for your children?  Probably not, but they were stupid enough to get in a parade lead by paedophiles and chant it.

Truth be told, I really don’t care.  They got in a parade lead by paedophiles and chanted “we’re coming for your kids.”  Even if they didn’t know, that’s not an excuse, as when you’re in a parade chanting “we’re coming for your kids”, you should immediately be skeptical of it.

Then you have the news organizations that, without evidence, immediately jumped onto the “They’re joking.” Bandwagon without evidence.  Because if they HAD looked into it, they would have discovered a coven of paedophiles.

you’re so right when i was like 14 i saw that picture of the san francisco gay men’s choir and the visual representation of the sheer amount of aids-related deaths made me insane and i felt like i had to learn so much and i did! i understand that kids today may find it depressing (it is ngl) esp considering how much better things are compared to ten years ago but i also think that reading about friend crews caring for their loved ones and protesting and cleaning out apartments etc etc really puts a lot of shit into perspective and would prevent more queer youngsters from neoliberalism lol. sorry for the rant i just feel very strongly about this. for me it was also before i figured out i was bi but yeah. sending love and light!!

The photo above was taken in 1993, and yet it continues to make rounds of the internet every few years as if it is something novel. At nearly three decades old, what is it about this particular photo which enraptured us? The shot was taken by Eric Luse, for the San Francisco Chronicle, after artistic director Stan Hill came up with the idea. Meaning to represent the impact AIDS had on their community in 1993, those in white were the surviving members of the original San Fransisco Gay Men’s Choir (SFGMC). Those in black represented the others who were lost to AIDS over the last decade (Manoukian, 2022).

An artistic rendering of the lost sustained by the SFGMC in 1993, the photograph carries enough sense of weight and innate clarity of the loss that it finds an audience again and again and again. The means of dissemination, with the internet allowing for content to spread widely and without proper credit, means things can go viral without reason. A post from 2021 of the photo on Reddit found over 45,000 “upvotes” (Fluid-Daydreamer, 2021). This in a sense, takes on the concept of photography as a socio-technical network where the accessibility of images, even ones which were prior to the ubiquity of the internet, can find new life on social platforms.

With changing social standards, along with changes in technology, the emotional resonance of an image like this photograph can be even more potent. This work was created in what Gómez Cruz & Meyer (2012) called the “fourth moment,” finding an initial audience in the physical world through the newspaper. The growth of the fifth moment, where user control is a primary factor in the growth networks and the distribution of content means a potential audience easier to find, and even easier to grow. As was the case with this photograph, the fifth moment of photography is an additive process (Gómez Cruz & Meyer, 2012). People can crop the photo, add text, alter or post it within a community that is more likely to appreciate this. Although the process means some details fall away, such as the time frame, the core ideal remains. In this case, the lives lost due to AIDS impacted SFGMC deeply and will be carried forwards for time immemorial.

I saw this post awhile ago and decided to do some digging into the Salvation Army. This is probably preaching to the choir in this subreddit, but here’s a list of controversies that I made for you all.

1986 - the Salvation Army tried to block legislation in New Zealand that decriminalized sex between gay men. (It ended up passing though.)

1988 - supported legislation in the UK to prevent "discussions of acceptance of homosexuality in schools and colleges".

1998 - refused to comply with San Francisco's domestic partners law. Instead they scaled back on three programs for senior citizens and the homeless so they wouldn't have to accept city money.

2000 - the Salvation Army of Scotland submitted a letter to Parliament opposing the repeal of section 28, which was a law prohibiting "the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality"

2001 - actively lobbied the White House to deny federal grants to states that had non-discrimination laws for LGBTQ+ people.

2001 - denied shelter to a Muslim family because they wouldn't participate in Christian bible study.

2002 - provided financial support to the New Apostolic Reformation in Uganda, a group that campaigns internationally to have homosexuality made punishable by death.

2003 - the Salvation Army of New York fired Jewish, Muslim, and Hindu employees who wouldn't sign a statement saying they'd uphold the organization's conservative Christian beliefs, including "faith in Jesus Christ" and the "Scripture of the New Testament".

2004 - after New York City passed a municipal ordinance stating employers had to provide spousal benefits to LBGTQ+ couples, the Salvation army threatened to close all of their soup kitchens and leave the city.

2004 - 18 current and former employees sue the Salvation Army in federal court for forcing them to sign forms revealing the churches they had attended over the past decade, name their ministers, and agree to uphold the SA's mission to "preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ". Many allege they were harassed to the point of quitting.

2006 - the Salvation Army pays Paul Cermak a settlement of $15 million after he claims he was abused by his SA swim coach as a kid.

2009 - trans woman Jennifer Gale is refused shelter unless she agrees to be housed with cisgender men. She later froze to death on a sidewalk outside the shelter.

2010 - had to be stopped by court order in New York for engaging in illegal proselytization of children in their government-funded foster care program.

2011 - Bil Browning gives an interview to the New York Times about trying to get shelter at a Salvation Army with his boyfriend in the early 90's . They were refused shelter unless they broke up and did not acknowledge each other while staying at the shelter.

2012 - invited Dinesh D'Souza to speak at their annual meeting and fundraiser in the US. Dinesh is a proponent of homophobia and misogyny who believes that 9/11 was caused by "images of homosexuals kissing".

2012 - fired case worker Danielle Morantez in Vermont after learning that she was bisexual.

2012 - Salvation Army spokesperson George Hood said the organization views gay relationships as sinful. "From a church viewpoint, we see that going against the will of God."

2012 - senior Salvation Army official Major Andrew Craibe went on an Australian radio show hosted by queer journalists Serena Ryan and Pepper Dillon to say that gay people should be put to death.

2012 - a bell-ringer in British Columbia, Canada gets pulled from his post because he was wearing a sign that said "if you support gay rights: please do not donate".

2013 - it was revealed that private settlements totaling $15.5 million had been made relating to 474 sexual abuse cases against children sheltered by the organization.

2013 - removed links to ex-gay programs from the Salvation Army website but the practice of referring LGBT people to conversion therapy privately still continues.

2014 - Mark Stiles gives an interview about being sexually abused by a Lieutenant at the former Gill Memorial Boys Home.

2014 - former members of a Salvation Army boys' home in Sydney, Australia allege that they were "rented out" to strangers who sexually abused them.

2014 - an internal document is leaked that says LGBT people can't be in leadership roles within the SA and are required to practice celibacy.

2014 - Jodielynn Wiley files a complaint with Dallas' Fair Housing Office after she's turned down for a two year housing program due to being trans.

2015 - an ex-Salvation army officer faced charges of sexually assaulting four women in the 1970's. The man was moved to another regiment as a cover up.

2016 - refused to back a Safe Schools initiative to combat anti-LGBT bullying.

2017 - the organization's substance abuse centre in New York City violated city laws by refusing to accept transgender people as patients, assigning rooms to trans people based on their assigned sex at birth, and requiring trans patients to undergo invasive physical exams to determine whether they were on hormone therapy or had surgery.

2018 - new social media guidelines are introduced for employees that ban them from posting their opinions about "anything political", such as gay marriage and abortion.

LGB Without The T: Messy Divorce Incoming

When Blaire White realized she was transsexual, she went to join the LGBT groups.  Because, obviously, right?

Yeah, it turns out they were psychopaths.  The majority of LGBT people don’t want to destroy the male/female divide.  And yes, this even includes transsexuals.  Modern transgender theory actually invalidates the struggles of more traditional transsexuals.

And this is where the core of the conflict comes from.  LGB people want the right to get married and adopt kids, which they have.  Most actual transsexuals know that what they want most is acceptance, even if it’s begrudging.  And the easiest way to do this is do your best to pass, don’t be an asshole, and don’t whip your dick out in a female changeroom.  I have known men who hate everything to do with transsexuals, but were willing to agree that men who actually castrate themselves can be called She.

Then we have the Transgender T, along with Q2S*AAIIQ, who want to destroy our very conception of humans as a sexually dimorphic species.

What a lot of LGB and T people have realized is that this philosophy undermines everything they have fought for.

But, as Blaire White points out, the biggest problem is that they’ve allowed the crazies be the one to speak for them, and refused to repudiate them.  Just look at how many people defended the San Francisco NAMBLA Choir singing about how they are going to come for your children.  But, like other movements, LGB, (and some T), people won their rights, and stopped paying attention.  This left the lunatics to run the asylum.

And reminder about how the language has changed.  I hated the words homophobia and transphobia when they were first created, as it’s not a phobia, but what it meant was beating up someone for being gay/trans.  Now homophobic means you are annoyed by all the gay rainbows and want kids to be kept out of strip clubs.  The reason they use the same terms is that they want them to carry weight they used to carry.  Because, if they equate beating someone up for being gay, and being annoyed by all the gay rainbows, then this justifies them using physical violence to stop it.

I’m not denying that they’ve received these threats, everyone, including these men, harbor the image of God and regardless of their beliefs, are owed an amount of dignity because of the image of God within them.

People sending these threats are doing wrong even tho I’m sure they believe they are doing right.

a thing most of my litg friends or any of my followers don’t know about me is that i’m a US history nerd. specifically 1900-today.

there’s an incredibly important history lesson that you were never taught in school. it’s something that i’m very very very passionate about and i regularly go out of my way to educate people about it. long post ahead but i’d really appreciate it if you actually read it.

today, december 1, is the beginning of world aids month, dedicated to bring awareness to the disease and remember those who were taken by it far too soon.

aids first started showing up in the united states in 1981. ronald reagan (for non-americans or just those who don’t know, reagan is essentially the figure head of the republican party. until the trump era, reaganism defined the party) was in the first year of his first term of his presidency. at the first signs of the epidemic, reagan said “maybe the lord brought down the plague because illicit sex is against the ten commandments.”

gay men, specifically gay men of color were hit hardest by the disease and still are to this day. and that, if anything, is what you should take away from this. aids was a “gay disease.” and that’s all it ever was to reagan. it was killing a certain group of people and it was a group of people that he was fine with killing.

the center for disease control did less that a million dollars of research on the disease between june 1981 and may 1982. more than 2,000 cases had been reported in the states by then and over half of them were already dead. nine million was spent on legionaries disease despite there being less than 50 deaths.

it was 1986 when reagan gave in and requested aids research funding from congress. he requested a mere 86 million. they basically laughed in his face and provided 244 million. reagan tried to lower it but it was denied. he tried to lower the funds again in 1987 and once again was laughed at. congress gave 400 million.

in 1986-1987, roughly 80 people were killed by the disease A WEEK.

finally in 1987, HALF WAY INTO HIS SECOND TERM, SIX YEARS AFTER THE CRISIS BEGAN, reagan mentioned aids in a public address for the first time. nearly 60,000 cases had been reported in the US. and once again, over half of them were dead.

by the end of reagan’s presidency, 116,000 cases had been reported. more than 70,000 of them were dead. i know visuals help a lot of people, so here’s a picture of the san francisco gay men’s chourus taken in 1993. the ones in black represent those killed by aids. and that’s in this one choir alone. one. fucking. choir.

the fact that this has been swept under the rug infuriates me to this day. ronald reagan is a cold blooded killer. he’s a murderer. he sat back with his feet up as he watched his own people drop like fucking flies. he didn’t care. he let it happen. he willingly let 70,000 people die because most of them were queer men of color. it was two birds with one stone for him.

knowing that ronald reagan is slow roasting in hell as we speak helps me sleep at night. i hope hes fucking rotting.

as long as i’m alive, i will do everything in my power to make sure people not only know this, but never fucking forget it. don’t forget the people he killed, the lives we lost. share their stories. scream it from the rooftops. the world knowing is the closest they will ever get to getting the justice they deserve. be angry. remember them. remember why they aren’t here anymore.
