The Grand Finale!!!
We’ve made it, everyone! Today’s the day, and we will all vote for the artist we want to see as the winner. But to say it quite frankly: Every single one of them is, because our goal was to bring all artists back to our memory, post their best (and also funniest/weirdest) art and shower them with our appreciation. That’s why we’ll bring the whole bracket back for you—get up from your seats and give them all a round of applause!
Tumblr media
But over to our finalists:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shawn McManus, Jill Thompson and Mike Dringenberg
All wonderful artists who have given us the biggest, most beloved arcs and wonderful depictions of Dream, and it is so, so hard to make that final choice.
If you need a little refresher how they got here (it’s worth checking out the links, people have posted great art and thoughts):
Round 3:
Shawn McManus (51.7%) vs Jon J Muth
Jill Thompson (90%) vs Miguelanxo Prado
Mike Dringenberg (86.8%) vs P. Craig Russell
Round Two
Round One
What we’d like to know from you in the reblogs today is:
Why are you choosing your favourite?
How do you rank the final 3?
And who is in your personal final 3 (it’s okay to shower your favourites with love even if they didn’t make it to the final)?
And without further ado, here comes our last poll—make it count!
Thank you so much to everyone who has participated and posted/reblogged, and please keep on doing so for this final poll! We want to hear all your thoughts and see all your favourite art, because this is the most important one of them all!

Death - A Winter's Tale
Published as part of the Vertigo: Winter's Edge series in 1999 this short story was written by Neil Gaiman and inked by Jeff Jones. Some Sandman fans may have missed this story as it isn't part of the Sandman comic original run and isn't included in the Sandman boxset like certain other specials are, and yet it may seem very familiar to any fans of the Netflix show...

Important distinction for Sandman fans who’ve only watched the show...
Morpheus in the comics:
Tumblr media
- 100% dtf
- Nada fell for him so fast she saw him in a dream once and was prepared to give up her kingdom and break the laws of the universe for him, Calliope provides a detailed and totally unprompted description of how of all her many lovers he was the best, Alianora’s very much dead but still thirsting for him, Thessaly hated him at first but very much still wanted to tap that, has such power over the collective unconscious of all sentient beings that he once got laid and gave every conscious lifeform the same sex-dream
- Can change his entire appearance at will to better his chances
- of all the endless, has only ever been out-hoed by Desire
Morpheus in the show:
Tumblr media
- Has clearly never known the touch of a woman in his life
- Divorced
- Permanently looks like an 80s twink with full guy-liner or a bedraggled wet cat
- Divorced.
And let me tell you, as someone who grew up rooting for the trainwreck male-leads in nordic crime dramas and thus likes her men as pathetic as possible, I am loving the direction they’re going in. I guess Neil Gaiman has been immersed in fandom long enough to know how to give the people exactly what they want.
(Edit) This got a few more reblogs than I thought and I am very much here for some of the tags, so I just thought I’d add as a caveat; I absolutely ship Dreamling, however, I’m more than willing to believe it’s possible for two guys to have a centuries-old queer platonic relationship where they’ve never done anything more intimate than hold hands. And yes, Tom Sturridge was perfect for the role due to his inexplicable ability to have amazing chemistry with anyone on screen (even if they’re playing his immortal siblings) but also manage to seem asexual af, we need more like him.
Disclaimer: this post has no intention of slut-shaming anyone, least of all Morpheus, it’s merely an appreciation of the discrepancy between his many romantic sub-plots in the comics and his obvious lack of a prominent love-interest in the show. But to those claiming there were only six women in the comics; yes, six that we know of and are explicitly shown. Others are alluded to, or are you calling Mervyn a liar?

Round Three/3, Poll
Tumblr media
P. Craig Russell
VS
Tumblr media
Mike Dringenberg
Uh oh, it’s one of those again…
We have arrived at our last pairing before the finale hits tomorrow, everyone! So make this one count, because it’s the battle of the (supposed) Sturridge lookalikes.
And as usual, we recommend you read up on background information, look at wonderful art appreciation for both and refresh your memory (especially with regard to the issues they created). You can do this here. But as you know from last week, they also created some bloopers or slightly OOC portrayals, which you can find here—we don’t want to be too biased 😉
Plus, have their Sandman issues again:
P. Craig Russell: Fables & Reflections #50: “Distant Mirrors—Ramadan”, Endless Nights: “Death—Death and Venice”, The Dream Hunters
Mike Dringenberg: Preludes and Nocturnes #6-8, The Doll’s House #9-11 and #14-16, Season of Mists #21 and #28
While you are still voting for your favourite Morpheus/Daniel and NOT story arcs, we would like to hear (and see!) what other portrayal totally knocked it out of the park for you:
This round is all about your favourite artist’s Sandman characters other than Dream.
Let us know in the reblogs, post your favourite panels or unofficial art like commissions—we want to see it all!
Here’s the poll to vote for your favourite if you want to see them again (you can find the whole bracket and some additional info here, and feel free to check out previous matches via the tag #sandman march mania):
