One of my all-time favorite examples of spell requirements that completely miss the point comes from "The Modern WItch's Spellbook" (1971) by Sarah Lyddon Morrison: "Wear seven gold rings on a gold chain, and wealth can be yours."
Well you could get around it by wearing gold plated rings and a chain (it doesn’t say real gold, does it?) but yeah that’s ridiculous.

Um, hi! I would like to learn more about witches/witchcraft/magick/etc, possibly even become a witch myself, but I can't find very much information anywhere. I've been trying to read about different types, but can't find anything. All I see is just "___ is a type of ___ magick that focuses on ___" and that's it. So I figured it would be wiser to just ask a witch for some tips (rhyme unintended). So, will you help me, please?
I will do my best to help out, but witchcraft is a huge and remarkably broad topic to try and cover.
I’ll try and cover the first thing you mentioned, which is types of witches/types of magick. This is a particularly broad subject on its own because there really are myriad types and subtypes.
For example, you have Elemental Witches - witches who work either exclusively with the elements (fire, earth, water, air, and spirit), or mostly with them. But then, stemming from that you have Green Witches (strictly earth related magick, e.g. crystals, herbs, bones, food), Fire Witches (that explains itself really), and so on.
Here are two posts that explain some known types, but remember that these lists are not definitive! Types of Witches [X] [X]
Okay!
So a witch is anyone who practises witchcraft. That part is pretty simple - though I’ve had people argue that you don’t have to practise witchcraft to be a witch. To that, I use this analogy: would you consider yourself a blacksmith if you do not work with metal?
But, here’s the thing: magick is not limited to spellwork.
Most witches cast during their lifetimes, but not all. Some witches cast routinely, and actively make doing so part of their practise. There are other things that we do, that are part of The Craft, such as divination, potion making, and herbal work, that are not spells in themselves, but still use energies and intent. You see, in a sense, magick is a way for witches to make changes to ourselves and the world around us. By this I absolutely do not mean that we can make lightning arc from our fingertips or snap our fingers and become Angelina Jolie.
What I mean, is that by harnessing and projecting our intentions into this world we have the ability to make things happen. We can change our luck, or banish negativity by simply screaming that into the universe. Some witches use tools to make this happen, and some do not. Some witches use deities (usually pagan witches, but established and Abrahamic religions are not excluded - anyone can be a witch!), and some witches do not involve religion or deities at all (these are known as secular witches ).Some witches use tools such as crystals and candles and some witches have taken modernity into account and use technology in their magick.
However, it is important to note that the things we use and the spells we cast are just ways of harnessing and directing the energy of our world and, if you use them, other planes. Really, all you need is yourself.
I’m finding it hard to explain things on such a broad topic. Is there anything specific I can help with?
I know that starting out as a witch, or trying to understand our delightfully difficult world can be, as I said, difficult so here. Try this list.
One more thing before you go:Read as much as you can!
As you’ve said that you’re new to this whole thing, here is a list of authors that you should avoid for now, as they perpetuate some problematic ideas, such as sexism, classism and the incorrect “witchcraft is wicca” idea/comparison/interchangeability.
Silver Ravenwolf
Ann Moura
Raymond Buckland
Kate West
Seth Cardorra - extremely problematic.
Roc Marten
Amber K
Christopher Penczak
Jason Miller
Sarah Lyddon Morrison
Edain McCoy

BEE SMASH!!!

Look, I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t like being single all the time. I can get lonely, but who the fuck doesn’t?! I also know that being with someone isn’t going to:
Fix my problems
Make me love myself any more
Magically give my life meaning
Even if it comes to pass that I end up alone for the rest of my life, I’m gonna live the HELL out of it, even WITHOUT some fuckin’ significant other!
So suck on that you fuckin’ bitch!
