thinking about how desperately the yellowjackets are still trying to slot each other and themselves into these clean little boxes even years later. “lottie’s the crazy one” even though they all are. “misty’s the violent one” even though they all are. “nat’s the one with a fucked up romantic past that keeps hurting her years later” but they all are. “shauna’s the one who lost a baby” even though they all are. “tai’s the one that clawed her way through life despite the difficulties” even though they! all! are!

Just can't help but think of Taissa drunkenly calling Shauna whilst outside a college party post break-up with Van sobbing and stumbling and Shauna being there for her but trying so hard not to be Sad and so Angry that those two can't just sort out their shit, because the only thing keeping them apart is each other and she never Got To Have Jackie, because she wasn't brave enough and she died whilst they fought. But obviously she just consoles a drunk morose Tai, who won't remember anything the next day, the only evidence of their conversation the 42 minute phone call in her call log.

Okay I know I said if I was going to get cooked and eaten I would go in a nice stir fry but I think actually I should be a filet on a cedar plank with a monterey spice blend and--AND! saffron. I don't know if I would be grilled or broiled but I do think the sear factor would be important.

Absolutely WILD question but for some reason I feel like you'd be the person to have good answers??? I need more actually good wlw story recs, books preferred but I'd accept shows and movies! Rec even the most obvious things, I truly have lived under a rock I know tlt and Baru Cormorant and not much else ;-; thank you!!
Not a wild question at all! Sarah Waters is great (Fingersmith especially), if you're not watching Yellowjackets yet you should be, I've heard very good things about something called Our Wives under the Sea but haven't read it yet myself, and if you're interested in nonfiction there's a ton of somewhat-dated-but-otherwise-very-good narrative history work from someone called Lillian Faderman. If you're okay with subtext there's also most of Shirley Jackson's novels and, for similar wlw Catholic vibes to TLT, the opera Dialogues of the Carmelites. (That one is by a gay male composer, Francis Poulenc, and is known to have been That Way on purpose.) Jawbone by Monica Ojeda is very very good, but one of the darkest and most upsetting books I've ever read. If you like Baru Cormorant you should be able to handle it, though.
Oh and there's always Carmilla, especially the original novella but also the significantly better-known mid-2010s webseries.
Summoning @staghunters, @vickythestrange, @marzipanandminutiae, @carys-the-ninth, @rebeccadumaurier,
@sapphicscience, @eucatastrophicblues, @mayasaura, and @maryblackwood for more recs if they have some.

Any fiction recommendations? I’ve repeatedly read Locked Tomb, natch. I’d love something similarly brainwork inducing but maybe a touch lighter. Also not fantasy or sci fi…I need something to listen to while I do a ton of chores, and those can be hard (for me) because the unfamiliar proper nouns get confusing. :/
anon!! I'm terrible at reccing anything based on “if you liked TLT” because TLT is like five different genres in a trench coat, but I TRIED (⭐) Here are some brainworm-y recs that aren't sff — where by brainworm-y I mean that they stayed with me for a while after I finished them, but aren't overly confusing. (most of them are books, but available on audio)
Podcasts: a tumblr pal recced me the deviser based on me liking the eldritch elements of tlt; it's short and horror-y, and I really enjoyed it.
I haven't checked out the new TMA yet but I see many TLT peeps who are enjoying it (or S1 of the original The Magnus Archives could be a good entry point if you haven't ever listened to it)
TV: Unfortunately I hardly ever watch live action stuff BUT if you haven't seen either IWTV (the series not the film) or Yellowjackets, I do rec those! There's a lot of overlap between these fans and TLT fandom on my dash. His Dark Materials also goes hard and you might enjoy it (dysfunctional characters! worldbuilding! religious weirdness!) but it has more sff elements than other stuff I've recced. Oddball out of nowhere but The Great is a fun show if you enjoy the meme moments of TLT + people being gleefully horrible + having feelings despite your best intentions
Animanga: Utena (!!!!!) also Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which occupies a very similar space to TLT in my brain
Books!
✧ I went through my “women unhinged” goodreads shelf and found some books that are avaliable in audio format, and might appeal. These are wildly varied in scope and ngl the criterion was just “at least one person (besides myself) who enjoyed tlt also this book” and the similarities stop there. It's all vibes baby! Still, I tried
my heart is a chainsaw by stephen graham jones (horror, slasher), bunny by mona awad (horror, wildly unhinged), the witching hour by anne rice (horror, gothic)
matrix by lauren groff (historical, lesbian nuns), anything by sarah waters (historical fiction + lesbians), rebecca by daphne du maurier (historical, gothic)
the plot by jean hanff korelitz (litfic, thriller), sadie by courtney summers (thriller, coming of age). anything by gillian flynn (thrillers with terrible women).
✧ I really enjoy Tana French thrillers for the strong sense of place, great prose, and the complete emotional turmoil of her character-centric narratives. If anything sounds up your alley, I enjoyed the witch's elm + dublin murder squad series. They're murder mystery procedural but the messy characters really elevate the novels. Available in audiobook also
✧ American Elsewhere, technically scifi but set in New Mexico. Somehow, cosmic horrors who have taken over a quaint little town and worse! They are enforcing HETERONORMATIVITY upon it! They also have tentacles. The main character rocks
✧ Sundial by Catriona Ward: insane, gripping psychological horror. A mother and her unsettling daughter take a trip to the isolate desert ranch where the main chracter grew up. Surrounded by unsettling science experiments
✧ A Touch of Jen by Beth Morgan: when the parasocial relationship is so strong, it accidentally summons a hellmonster from another dimension
✧ SFF adjacent, sorry, but set in the real world (historical, tho) — Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge, a middle grade novel with fairytale elements that gave me more brainworms than any kids book ought to, mostly because I LOVED the main character. She occupies a very similar place in my brain as Gideon does. This is actually the only book on the list that I'm not sure is available in audio format, but if you get a chance and it's up your alley, I'd check it out
I hope there's at least ONE thing you'll like in here! lmk (also. lmk if you don't have access to a way to borrow audiobooks but would like to)

9 people you want to get to know better
Thanks to @bakedbakermom 😊
Currently reading: Oh God, like mostly a bunch of boring academic articles that will hopefully have some relevance to my PhD. Beside my bed waiting to be read/finished is "The Female Quixote" (Charlotte Lennox), "Sanditon/The Watsons" (Jane Austen), and "Mother Tongue: The Surprising History of Women's Words." (Jenni Nuttall)
Last song: Oo, oldie but a goodie: "Vox" (Sarah MacLachlan), the in-concert version of course!
Currently watching: Just finished "Yellowjackets" and "Good Omens 2". Not sure what to watch next ("The Gilded Age"?) so amusing myself with pimple-popping videos on youtube and rewatching "The X Files" for the 348th time.
Current fic: I'm retired from ff writing (but I've got 250+ stories that can be read here). I've enjoyed hunting down classic fics I used to love from the original run of TXF (which I have recced as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations). In fact, sometimes I forget that there are newer fics to experience. Luckily, @audiofanficpod keeps me up to date. I like anything by @phillippadgettwrites and @sarie-fairy
Next on my watchlist: OH! Been waiting for the next season of "Our Flag Means Death" (a show I watched cos tumblr was going mad for it and tumblr was SO right!)
Current obsession:

tag game: 9 people you'd like to get to know better
Thanks @hellokittysasuke for tagging me!! No pressure to participate if I tag you lmao
1. Last Song: Head Like A Hole - Nine Inch Nails
2. Currently Watching: Lmaooo I just started rewatching DN with my little sister so that I guess. Also just finished Mob Psycho and am probably going to start Yellowjackets soon.
3. Three Ships: Is it cheating to say lawlight/mikalight/mikalawlight. If it is too bad because that's what I'm saying.
4. Favorite Color: Ultramarine blue & turquoise
5. Currently Consuming: Is this a food question. Rn I have a can of Coke and some dill pickle flavor potato chips. If y'all watch closely I'll take one and eat it
6. First Ship: I spent a lot of time watching Dramione slideshows (not really AMVs just straight up slideshows of stolen Deviantart shit set to like Diary of Jane by Breaking Benjamin) as a youth but I think my first ship I actually cared about was Sirius/Lupin.
7. Relationship Status: Engaged :))
8. Last Movie: LMFAO I recently visited my little sister as I just mentioned so it's literally that new Adam Sandler movie You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Which was cute ig. I was charmed by the nonbinary b'nai mitzvah at the beginning of the movie and scandalized by that little girl with the lip fillers making out with a boy in the ark at her shul. And Sarah Squirm was fun in it as like the wannabe-hip queer rabbi lol.
9. Currently working on: Job hunting mostly in my day-to-day life. But also my fanfiction author AU! Here's something I wrote last night just for fun.

Yellowjackets hits the ground running in Season 2. As wickedly funny and overwhelmingly gross as ever (based on the first six episodes), the new cast additions fit in seamlessly, the continuing cast is incredible as always, and I am way, way in. Plotwise there's a little bit of a hangover from last season as the stories continue without developing as much as you might expect (particularly in the present day timeline); but it barely matters, because everything is so much fun to watch. Best new cast additions in particular: Elijah Wood is a ton of fun playing off Christina Ricci; and Lauren Ambrose is so good as adult Van it's unreal. Plus, Jeff (Warren Kole) and Callie )Sarah Desjardins) have upgraded roles from season one, and are absolutely delightful playing off Melanie Lynskey's Shauna - this is the most messed up family you've ever seen, and it's great. The show is also excellent at subverting expectations - the cliffhanger from last season in particular will not go the way you think, and is better for it. So happy this show is back, and as good as ever.

Do you have any TV show recommendations
my #1 tv show recommendation is to watch the challenge. i literally never cared about competition reality shows besides antm and now i am Obsessed because the challenge is perhaps the greatest show of our generation. i beg of you to watch this compilation video it captures the overall spirit of the show So well and it's also hilarious.
if you want recommendations on which season to start with PLEASE send me another ask, or ask sarah @steveharrington she's the expert.
ok now other shows ❤️ i'm not gonna mention shows like succession that are super big on tumblr or well-known prestige television like breaking bad or the sopranos because i'm sure you've already seen plenty of people recommending those yknow? so yeah.
cowboy bebop (anime). the live action does not exist to me. anyway. cowboy bebop is sci-fi. it's western. it's jazz. it's comedy. it's tragedy. it's about love and identity and bounty hunting and a little corgi. there's a reason why it's often called one of the greatest anime of all time. this kinda violates my no reccing super popular shows rule but i think people who don't watch much anime may not be familiar with cowboy bebop so i figured i have a duty to the people.
the get down. i wholeheartedly believe that the get down is the greatest thing netflix has ever produced and it's a goddamn tragedy that it was canceled, but what does exist is just. incredible. it's about the rise of rap and hip-hop, the death of disco, and struggling to figure out identity and the meaning of success in the bronx in the 1970s. created & produced by baz lurhmann, the show incorporates archival footage of new york and real people with fictional narratives in a truly masterful way. it's absolutely gorgeous. the music is fucking fantastic. it's So worth watching and i wish that it had gotten the same hype as other netflix shows like st, oitnb, etc.
speaking of netflix. american vandal. if the get down is the best thing netflix has ever produced, american vandal is a very close second, and i could honestly be persuaded to swap their places, but ANYWAY. it's a mockumentary wherein a kid named peter and his best friend sam attempt to solve the mystery of who spray-painted twenty-seven dicks on twenty-seven cars in the staff parking lot at their high school. it's one of the funniest shows i've ever seen, and also the only show i've ever found to be accurate to the contemporary teenage experience. it's also like... insanely accurate as a parody and critique of real true crime documentaries. also if you're following me you're probably an st fan, and eduardo franco (argyle!!) is in american vandal as well, if that motivates you any more.
xena: warrior princess. it's the best show of all time and also the worst show of all time. everything that people say about shows like supernatural and glee and riverdale? xena did that shit back in the 90s, they did it better, and they did it with lesbians. they did it with swords. they did it with aphrodite. they did it with leather and whips and clones and reincarnation and true love's kiss. please watch xena.
community. if you haven't watched community idk what you're doing with your life to be quite honest. just watch it already.
GLOW. attention all tumblrinas who like messy complicated stupid mean scheming sexy women. you will fucking love glow. sorry i'm recommending so many netflix shows but i can't Not mention glow on here it would be a betrayal of my lesbianism. it is about sexy women wrestling. it's got blood. it's got tits. it's got storytelling. it's got 80s music. it's got fucking your best friend's husband as a means of feeling closer to her. yellowjackets fans i'm looking at you. watch glow.
ghosts (bbc). not cbs. dear god not cbs. bbc. but yeah ghosts is a sitcom about a young couple who suddenly inherit an old home (manor? thing? man i don't fuckin know english aristocracy stuff) full of ghosts. it's a fun, simple premise, and some parts of the show can be corny, but the actors sell it so well that it's just a pleasure to watch. if you're into sitcoms, i think it's worth giving ghosts a shot!
that's it for now i don't want this to get super long ❤️ thank u for asking!! also sorry if this wasn't what you expected from me lmao. OH ALSO watch the muppet show. like the OG 1970s muppet show. shit slaps.

obsessed with the textual significance of jackie’s line to travis about how this must be a guy’s dream, to be surrounded by all these “hot babes” and how clearly we saw that idea DESTROYED just a few minutes later.
yes, it was the nineties, and that would have been the belief at large of american high schoolers. that really wasn’t a thing that would have been that questionable to say at the time... but it wasn’t going to be accurate in the wilderness that the girls were constructing now. hell, just a few shots later super high travis gets called a thing that jackie stole, sexually assaulted and then chased through the woods as a prospective human sacrifice by those “hot babes”.
conventional wisdom was going to die, and JACKIE had to die with it.

Hey!! Not sure if you watch variety mash ups. The actors on actors. I think the pairings are really good and sometimes really uh interesting lol Was wondering if you have a pairing that you would really like to see ?
Hey! Yeah! I love all of the round tables and the actors on actors sessions, although I haven't watched many of them yet this year (just been a very busy few weeks!). I've been particularly looking forward to watching Kieran Culkin's one with Claire Danes, espcially because I think Kieran actually interviews other people so well - his Actors on Actors with Dan Levy a couple of years ago shows that really demonstrates that.
There are so many Actors on Actors interviews I'd love to see, but I have Succession on the brain still and given these sorts of interviews are usually in the lead up to the Emmys, I'm going to do the main Succession actors and the current Emmy contenders I'd love to see them do one with:
Alan Ruck and Henry Winkler (Barry). Two actors who broke big as iconic 80s characters (Cameron Frye and The Fonz!) who made their careers in sitcoms only to get these new career defining roles in their 60s and 70s? Love it for them and for us and I feel like they'd be a lot of fun to watch.
Jeremy Strong and Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul). I couldn't tell you specifically why with these two, but I do think they've had some similarities career wise where they've been jobbing actors for such a long time and are both experiencing unmatched recognition and success in their 40s. I also think they're both really thoughtful actors who have real insight both into the interiority of their characters and the themes of their respective stories, and I just thinking getting to hear them talk would be neat.
Sarah Snook and Melanie Lynsky (Yellowjackets). I almost put Sarah with Rhea, but it feels almost too obvious, haha. Yellowjackets is a really different show to Succession, but I think there's this really interesting territory between the shows in terms of female rage, repression and survival that would be super ripe for discussion. Plus Sarah and Melanie both being antipodean - - it just feels right to me.
Kieran Culkin and Bill Hader (Barry). The comedy vs drama balance! The cycles of violence and trauma and the different outlets their characters have for that! Another opportunity for comical height difference! The convo would be great, I can feel it.
Matthew MacFadyen and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso). This would be the most British Actors on Actors imaginable, haha, but they're another one who have interesting parallels personally and professionally, particularly being the children of performers (Matthew's mother was an actress and Hannah's an opera singer), and to talk about that along with the English theatre scene, which they're both very familiar with too, would be interesting, I think.
J Smith Cameron and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary). I mean, who wouldn't want this one? Their respective backgrounds in theatre, their roles in formative 90s cinema (The First Wives Club! SIster Act 2!), both of them having paid their dues in a zillion one or two ep arcs on every imaginable procedural. I just love that.
Brian Cox and Harriet Walter (Succession / Ted Lasso). I mean, obviously, right?? We were robbed of more scenes with the two of them on the show, but the fact they've been acting with each other on stage since at least the 1980s is magic. Tell me everything, and also every headcanon you dreamt up about Logan and Caroline's relationship.

What would be your ideal cast for the next generation in 2023?
hmm that's difficult mainly bc i really don't watch that many teen drama so i don't have a solid list of actors in the appropriate age range lmao but i love a challenge nonetheless so here we go!!
for wyatt i would kind of love to cast something of an already famous person to kind of really hit home the idea of Legacy tm but the issue is bc wyatt is so big in narrative he kind of just. gets less plot. so that actually might not work. so tbh really i think the move would lowkey be casting a nepo baby. honestly i would love wyatt russell (same name besties?!?!?) but he is just a shade old. if you've only seen him in falcon and the winter soldiers i am begging you to expand and see his cali babe range.... he's in black mirror, 22 jump street, ingrid goes west, lodge 49... babes. like. beyond that, charlie hall who was in sex lives of college girls as that like. really manic guy whitney went out with. and then third option but also on the older side would be alex roe who played the male lead on the tv siren that i think like. only five people watched (excluding myself: four). i think he could swing the necessary earnest energy.
chris honestly should probably be The Star kind of hte one who brings the most draw to the show ideally someone who already has something of a fanbase in a gifset before i've used thomas doherty before who checks two boxes in that he already has an established fan base coming from both the descendant's franchise & also the gossip girl reboot and of course he is also devastatingly handsome in a very cliche way and we already know can play a slut. so that's actually three boxes. another option which i thnk would Slay but again he's a little older would be logan lerman <3 like. y'all see it rite? wild card would be tommy martinez.
for melinda i think a couple solid options would be sarah catherine hook from first kill, sarah desjardins from. well im gonna say yellowjackets but i know her from riverdale lmao. or kaitlyn dever from booksmart also potentially kaylee bryant from legacies or brenna damico from descendants
rest of the next gen under the cut ❤️
for the twins tamora & kat, ideally, they are played by twins. but i do not know a lot of famous acting twins those would have to be found. however, some actors i really like would be liv hewson from santa clarita diet (gone too soon, rip). i think louisa harland from derry girls could be really fun. katherine langford from. well. best known for 13rw but fuck that show. wild card would be storm reid from a wrinkle in time.
henry jr i will be honest i have no idea what he looks like in my head other than he has dark hair. so i'm just gonna spit out some options. archie renaux from shadow and bone. gavin leatherwood from sabrina maybe. mekki leeper from slocg. anirudh pisharody from 9-1-1. booboo steward from (twilight) julie and the phantoms. asher angel from shazam.
pj functionally serves as the leader of the cupitches so i would love to again see her as someone with a good amount of draw honestly i would love to see danielle rose russell as her like those scenes in legacies where she plays lizzie disguised as hope is the exact vibe we're going for. other excellent options imo would be madelyn cline or sabrina carpenter
parker and pj together kind of carry the emotional brunt of the cupitches mainly because peyton is so young it's just easier to defer to her sisters til she's old enough to properly shoulder the burden of a solo narrative. so w both pj and parker the actress needs to slay the solid exterior // cracks slip through; for pj that's the super cool capable princess form parker that's the badass unflinching warrior, both of them are hiding A Lot. so really, any of the pj castings could work for parker imo and vice versa. but some parker specific ones would be savannah lee may from julie and the phantoms, i love that she's kind of got like this baby faced nice energy but can play just like the mean girl. i would love that dichotomy w parker of someone who does not look violent always packing a knife you know? other than that: emma myers from wednesday, odessa azion, or emily alyn lind from gossip girl (tho between you and me eal is my personal fancast for penn)
for peyton she really is the baby of the family so again it would ideally probably be someone new to the scene bc they're so young but i think good existing options would be trinity likins who plays jellybean on riverdale or shay rudolph from the babysitters club.
and then as other casts for the eventual bianca mimi keene from sex education or amita suman from shadow and bone. for melinda's roommate ale mariselo zumbado from genera+ion possibly, ale's character is mexican so i would really love a mexican actress to be cast. google is not aiding me in this hunt. melinda's (new) whitelighter effie freya mavor from skins can defo do the scottish accent, i also think gracie dzienny from first kill & slocg could bring that necessarily wackadoodle energy. over with kat's plotline viola could be played by bola koleosho. more characters to come who ideally would also fit here but no spoilers yet !!
