The internet archive under attack
I've come a bit late to the party but recently it found out that 'hachette book group, HarperCollins, Wiley, and Penguin Random House' all book publishing firms? (Is firm the adequate term, I'm not sure) are trying to sue the internet archive as in their eyes the internet archive is costing them millions of dollars.
I cannot express with word the rage in my insides at the moment. This is... something. Something I hate with all my being. The internet archive holds so much knowledge sometimes I make fun at myself for being a bit of a data hoarder, I don't like to delete files, I like to preserve iterations of the things I've made or I own. The internet archive holds so much, hounded of thousand of pdfs, from classics to less known, audiobooks, old films, music, tv programming, etc... I've seen old games archived but also people uploading their own custom games, their psp homebrew games, original games that aren't found anywhere else.
The internet archive also hosts the wayback machine, a way to record old webpages and their change through time. Do you want to see how the old internet was in a more direct medium than screenshots? This is the way to do it. And you don't even need to be interested in the early internet to make use of it, recently there was a post making fun of an AI made article that repeated the word "pebble" like 30 times. I was late to the party and the article was edited, however someone archived that page, someone was able to save that instance in time and allowed everyone to revisit it whenever they liked.
I'm not very good at putting things into words, specially in the heat of the moment like right know when I've just learnt about the issue. But this is serious this is one step away from suing public libraries. I hate it here. I want to burn something. The internet archive is important and there should be more initiatives like it. The archival of the internet should not be at risk so easily...
This people have put in better word than I can at the moment.

I’m not sure when exactly this happened, but I think it’s clear that the aro community really is a community, now.
For the longest time I’ve felt like we were still in stasis, not quite there; a proto-community, yes, but not quite a community. But we have more history now to lean back on, more of each other to talk to and laugh with and cry with and learn from. More people that’ll go forward and make a part of modern aro history. More people that believe us, believe in us, will stand with us if we ask them.
I wouldn’t consider myself an aro elder yet, though each year I’m surprised at how long aromanticism has been a part of my life, how long I’ve been free of doubt or insecurity about my aromanticism, how far we’ve come since I was questioning. Then again, when I was questioning, some of the people I looked up to for guidance were probably close to the age I am now, so I might be there sooner than I think.
And, I’m so so hopeful for all aros, young or old, new or not, because we’ve come so far. Day by day, progress is slow (and yes, it’s unfair, it should be so much faster), but looking back it feels fast. We are our own role models, the people we look up to for guidance. We carve our own path through life, making things up as we go. I used to find that terrifying, because I had no idea what the future would bring. But it’s actually amazing, because I can ignore all these silly “rules” and guidelines about what my life should be, and instead ask, “what do I want my life to be?”
Younger me, you have no idea how awesome your future is gonna be. I’m sorry about the pain and hardship you’ll go through first; it won’t be fair and you shouldn’t have to deal with it. But you’ll make it through, and one day you’ll be me. I can’t wait for you to get here.

Finding Deleted Fics: A Multi-Method Guide
Tumblr media
i feel like we are the fandom who needs this post the most any fandom has needed it ever.
all of these methods require you to know the title, author and/or link of the fic.
[disclaimer: the fic i am using as an example is not deleted, i just can't think of any other fics to use as an example right now.]
Method #1: Wayback Machine
this is my go to method that i always try first.
steps:
every fic on ao3 has a url of archiveofourown.org/[specific-numbers]. you're gonna need that url, doesn't matter if it doesn't work anymore.
eg.
Tumblr media
2. now you're gonna go to archive.org and enter your url in the search bar.
3. something like this will come up. it probably won't be saved as many times though, just once or twice.
Tumblr media
just click any of the links now, either the dates marked blue on the calendar or the earliest/latest date. that's it.
drawbacks:
often, a problem arises when searching for fics rated mature or explicit.
Tumblr media
the site will have archived this page but not the actual fic. though, maybe lady luck is on your side and clicking proceed will lead you to a saved version of the actual fic. but usually not. and not all fics are saved here. in those cases, i have some more methods.
Method #2: Search Engine Cache
search engines like google and yandex often save a cached version of sites, though yandex is much more reliable than google. i'll give you a tutorial for both.
steps (yandex):
the link isn't completely necessary, just the title and author of the fic will suffice.
go to yandex.com and search for your fic by either entering the url or entering the title and author as such.
Tumblr media
3. this will probably immediately come up.
Tumblr media
just enter the captcha and it should let you in on the first go but there's a glitch i've encountered where you could be entering the captcha completely correct but for some reason the site still won't let you in. for that, you just have to keep trying again and again until eventually the site lets you in. might take more than 10 tries.
4. once you're in, search results will pop up. directly clicking them will only lead you to the not found page. what you're gonna do is hover over the box of the search result and you'll see 3 dots pop up on the right.
Tumblr media
click those and a dropdown menu will appear. click the first option 'saved copy'.
and thats it! this is a much more efficient method especially for explicit or mature fics.
drawbacks:
for some reason, when i open yandex in google chrome, i can't see the 3 dots. i can in firefox though. don't really know what thats all about.
i'll show you how to do it with google too just in case yandex doesn't work.
steps (google):
in the url bar, type cache:[link of fic]. that's pretty much it. google doesn't have a lot of fics saved though so you'll probably get a 404 page.
Method #3: Reddit
there's a subreddit called r/DeletedFanfiction that can probably help you out. either search for the fic as it may have already been posted or req it and someone will probably get you a google drive link soon enough. u/throwthisaway11112 is my lord and savior.
afaik it's still up and running fine despite the reddit protest thing (which i recommend taking a minute to look into).
Method #4: Archive.org Database
okay, now you're gonna need a lot of memory on computer for this one. i'm not gonna even bother and try to explain it, i'll just link you to the original post. thank you once again to the anon who sent me this method!
Method #5: Fandom
if absolutely none of those methods work, you can still just send me an ask and maybe my followers or i will have a saved copy. same for any other fandom, i recommend asking around in popular fandom spaces, someone is bound to have it.

Left home in a blur
Arrived in the night
Everything is going to be alright
Came back to the place
Where it all flared out
Just to check if the reservoir
Still bore the mark of the drought
Up to 13th and Taylor, check my pulse
You weren’t there, and neither was anybody else
Stared down demons, came back breathing
No real point in ever leaving
Tracy and Ivory and Brad and me too
We will see some great miracle before the night is through
Slipped in through the entrance
Stood in the hall
Left my fingerprints on the elevator wall
Went down to my old room
Stood outside it a minute
Wondering if parts of me
Were still there in it
Who can say it won’t be me
You are gone now and I am free
Wesley and Quinn and Devon and you
We will all be fixed up as good as new
And I stared at the number 10 on my old apartment’s door
That’s one ghost that can’t bite me anymore
And someday we will all feel at home in our new skin
And someday we will never be alone again
When the sun comes up and the night has passed
We shall all be healed at last, at last, at last
We Shall All Be Healed (track written for the album of the same name but unreleased), performed at 2015-10-04 - Saturn - Birmingham, AL, recording from the Internet Archive.

Do you remember what I said to you? I said, What on earth can you do on this earth but catch at whatever comes near you, with both your hands, until your fingers are broken? I'd never said that before, or even consciously thought it, but afterwards it seemed like the truest thing that my lips had ever spoken, what on earth can you do but catch at whatever comes near you and hold onto it until your fingers are broken . . .

i’m so fucking sick of people (say, the people currently winning the lawsuit) claiming that the internet archive infringes their precious darling copyrights—if they want individual books taken down, why should the trial not only be about those?—why must they punish the entire catalogue? i use the archive primarily for old historical books, academic books, many books that are niche or 100+ years old which no one can buy anywhere, nearly no one would buy even if they could, and which the vast majority of real libraries do not even carry. i use the internet archive practically every single day for research and studying and it is my #1 resource by far. why do people value profits over knowledge? why do people value profits over accessibility? this is a library and the publishing companies are mad because it allows people to read their works for free. IT’S A FUCKING LIBRARY! poor people deserve to read and access archives. poor people make up the majority of the human race. all this trial is accomplishing is making thousands of great books inaccessible to poor people because publishing companies want to save a few bucks. sure, you can borrow books from other libraries via interlibrary loaning, but doing so takes WEEKS due to shipping. the internet archive saves people an enormous amount of time and money. this is a major case of book burning being put into action and practically no one outside of academia gives a fuck or even knows about this issue because journalists know this story won’t sell well and thus aren’t bringing attention to it. i am disgusted and my hope for humanity is in the gutter.

Everytime someone shares a zine I did three or four or even seven years ago I get so intensely happy and humbled. Todays Marian is widely different from the creator of those and has in part forgotten , and yet - they still get around! And touch people! The work truly transcends the author (reassuring, on the weird creative days! )

i don't think there should be a blog that reposts art from deactivated accounts 🤨 and i don't think their policy should be "if you made this art and you're on a different account now dm us to take it down"

Internet Archive: Rally on the steps of the Internet Archive!!
This Saturday! April 08, 2023
Tumblr media
Battle for Libraries sign up if you are going to attend the rally!
If you can't attend/can't make it that is completely fine! You can check for the live updates on Twitter by Internet Archive following the hashtag #DigitalRightsForLibraries
Tumblr media
"...Make & share a rally sign & tag @internetarchive. Need a suggestion? Try: - Internet Archive is a Library For Everyone! - eBooks are Books..."
Here is a post with info better summarizes of what is happening to the Internet Archive
To summarize in case you have no idea what is going on (or just don't want to read the link). Four (4) book publishing companies HarperCollins, Wiley, penguin random house LLC, and Hachette book group are suing the Internet Archive because during the pandemic their sales of books did poorly. So they are blaming Internet Archive, a library for the internet, for their poor sales because they believe their system for ebooks is flawed. Even though it's the exact same system as any old library with a library card.
Donate to Internet Archive!
