These animals are trafficked in numbers that are not really conceivable, the stories Maria Diekmann told us from @restnamibia were hard to get our head around. Definitely a species worth protecting and if this crazy killing does not stop, we could so easily wake up and these unique creatures will be extinct. Hard work, not always rewarding. And funding is a huge issue. Maria had a baby pangolin while we were visiting - and he was waking more times at night to feed than Tom was (who was 7 months at the time and with us). These scaly anteaters are the most heavily trafficked wild mammals in the world. All 8 species of pangolin are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. #Pangolins are threatened by #poaching and trade for their scales, which are perceived by some to have medicinal properties in China and Vietnam, as well as for their meat. An estimated 1 million pangolins have been taken from the wild in the last decade. 2019 saw many high-profile seizures of illegally trafficked pangolin products, but more must be done to protect this unique species. WWF, together with TRAFFIC, is working in Asia and Africa to combat wildlife crime. We are supporting enhanced anti-poaching and anti-trafficking efforts, as well as trying to reduce demand for illegal wildlife products in countries like China and Vietnam.
