went to Rose & Thorn over the weekend! it's a new(ish) SCA event focused on women and gender minority fighters! (this was the second year it's happened, I went last year as well)
lots of cool classes and panels. the tourneys were restricted to only women and gender minority fighters, though plenty of other folks showed up for pickup fights and classes and whatnot as well. it was bigger this year, 2 days instead of 1, with some instructors coming in from out of kingdom.
I love having a space of our own 💚

I'm also nb and in the SCA! I'm in An Tir, and while a lot of people aren't super educated about trans stuff / don't think about it, I have yet to meet anyone who wasn't supportive. I'm on the transmasc end of things, and I go by he/they in the heavy fighter community, which sometimes requires being pretty assertive about correcting people (a lot of heavy fighters just don't think about gender), but as long as I have the guts to mention it they're fine. And as a community we're working to be better about it, recognizing gender-neutral titles, explicitly welcoming trans folks at events, that sort of thing.
So it's not perfect, but that's mostly bc cis people are oblivious, rather than people being actively hostile about it. And I enjoy the opportunity to play with gender - sca personas are good for that. If you introduce yourself as a Lord, you're a Lord, and vice versa for Ladies. Plus medieval gender roles feel Different from modern ones.
(yaninus-de-venoix is my scablr, btw, I'm the hammered dulcimer person lol. can only send asks from my main tho)
Thank you responding!

So uh, executive functions a bitch hey? Anyways, here's the long overdue 'fit reveal of my Wams and Hose (the pink and green fabric from this post, with the original idea being this) and my Hemd.
So this outfit is around 16th century German, and on the simpler side of Landsknect. All the pieces are made of linen (except for the tights, they're just ballet tights I ordered online), and the cord was braided by both myself and a friend.
Patterning the hose (shorts) was a very, um,, intimate experience... In order to make the pattern some old tights were sacrificed, I stood very still, and was mummified in duct tape. As you can see, they fit quite well, and the short inseam gives me quite a considerable range of motion
The wams (top) are attached at the front and back centre by ties. I'll eventually add more attachment points on the side I think, but for festival they held up spectacularly.
Overall I'm very happy with them, I missed my colour goals slightly, but also they're just the cutest watermelon palette >:)

So y'all remember that free leather I got from this post? Yeah I've started making it into clothes...
(Ehehehehe I'm wearing a couch!! >:D)
Got this Jerkin pattern from a friend, luckily we're around the same size so alterations weren't too hard. Still got a little bit to go, and I'm thinking of slashing and pinking it, but progress!!

Okay so I don't know what the statute of limitations on this is (not a crime don't worry but felt like one) but it's been long enough that I should probably tell the internet about it.
Do you ever go for a drive, the sun is setting and its a lovely evening, the sky is a wonderful gradient of purples and oranges.
Then out of the corner of your eye, on the side of the road, you see a very smashed up couch. Old three seater, looks like it's been wrecked by a dog, frame is unusable etc.
And you think to yourself, 'I wonder if that's leather...'
So you call your good friend who lives only five minutes away @the-merry-otter, and open with "Hey bestie, are you up to much, I've got a box cutter and I know where a couch is, wanna skin it?"
Anyways long story short I have a bunch of chrome tan leather I got for free

Okay it's been some time but I made this kidney pouch as a Kris Kringle gift for a member of my (SCA) household, and it wasn't without tribulations.
Tribulations and *the process* continued under the cut
So I used the pattern from Dark Horse armoury (which is great, highly reccomend. I'll link it if someone asks)
What I didn't account for was how much of the vege tan leather I had left. So I had to print the pattern multiple times at different scalings to see what fit with the leather I had, but! I persevered.
Next came punching all the holes, I used the smallest drive punch I had for all the stitching holes and crouched on the concrete of the garage for hours tapping away and slowly eroding my cutting mat (I have a punch block now, this whole project was made in desperation)
But alas! Tragedy struck
When I bent and then snapped my punch most of the way through! But ingenuity provides and I continued by using some jewellery pliers.
With that out the way, then came stitching.
This went pretty smoothly all things considered, I even managed to watch a whole season of the vox machina animated show on a friend's reccomendation
And that's it! This was a very "step 1: draw a circle, step 2: draw the rest if the owl" walk through of myself making a kidney pouch

Im back from yet another amazing Rowany Festival, I fought alot, I shared many magical moments with friends, and the pink and green garb was worn!!
I'll be posting some photos of the garb after I unpack, but for now, enjoy this photo of the very pretty tassel I won for being the highest placed fighter in the Rapier Auction Tourney who was not a master of defence:
