Another one of my favorite resources is CPWR, which is dedicated to providing safety resources in order to reduce jobsite injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. CPWR also commonly partners with other organizations to perform research and create other tools.
On their website, you can find dozens of free toolbox talks infographics, and read the findings of their current and past research projects.
Construction Junkie’s Safety Section
This is obviously a little self-serving, but I spend a lot of time talking about safety on Construction Junkie and there’s a ton of valuable information to be found.  Not only can you find out about recent regulation changes, and information about other great resources like this post, I also cover real-life safety incidents on jobsites throughout the country. For me, using examples of things that have actually happened recently gives any safety training or toolbox talk a heightened sense of urgency and makes people want to listen to you.
In addition, you can find new tools and technology to help enforce your company’s standards or provide your workers an alternative to traditional methods.  A couple recent examples are the rise of exoskeletons that provide lift assist to reduce fatigue and long term ailments, and AI software to help monitor your jobsite for social distancing compliance during the pandemic.
Procore Safety Qualified Program
You may only know Procore as the popular project management software company, but they actually spend a lot of energy providing some pretty great (and free) services for contractors to use, even if you’re not on their platform.  One of those resources is a catalogue of “Procore Safety Qualified” courses, which can be found on their education page. Those who complete the course can also earn a coveted “Safety Qualified” hard hat sticker.
The most current courses are a bit more non-tangible than you may be used to, as they cover wellbeing, mindset, and cultural changes, but they also have a backlog of more traditional topics as well. The 8 other topics include Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Scaffolding, Hazard Communication, Fall Protection, Confined Spaces, Silica Exposure, and Heat Hazards.
Each course can be used to earn continuing education credits and it also approved by several industry organizations.
Safesite’s Safety Blog
Safesite makes their living with their safety management system and safety app of the same name, but they also have a really great blog packed with extremely helpful information. The company covers all of the most important topics, including fall protection, excavation, safety culture, documentation, ladder safety, COVID-19, and so much more.
In addition to just the helpful blog posts, you can also find checklists for things like PPE inspections, fall protection, electrical inspections, hot work, and others. NYCOSH Report Sheds Light on Construction Deaths, Safety Issues
The number of construction-related deaths in New York is increasing, a recent safety report shows. The number of fatalities is on the rise, as the report comments that deaths are “trending upward.” Construction deaths most often occur through falls. In New York state, 49 percent of construction deaths were caused by falling. In New York city, falls accounted for 59 percent of deaths.
The report had several overall findings. In addition to the rising number of construction fatalities, NYCOSH says construction risks disproportionately affect Latino workers and occur most often on non-union construction sites. Latino employees only make up 30 percent of the construction workforce in New York, yet 57 percent of construction fatalities in 2016 were Latino workers.
NYCOSH also found conditions to be more dangerous at non-union sites compared to union sites. Construction deaths on non-union sites made up 80 percent of all construction deaths in 2014. There was a similar trend in 2015; 74 percent of deaths occurred on non-union sites. The greater number of deaths was also accompanied by more safety violations, the report said. In 2014, non-union sites had twice as many safety violations compared to union sites. Overall, safety violations were prevalent and the consequences are minimal. In 2014, two-thirds (68 percent) of construction sites inspected by OSHA had safety violations and penalties were small, the report said. There is a strong connection between safety violations and the number of construction fatalities at a job site. Safety violations were identified at 87 percent of construction sites that had on the job fatalities in 2014. This rose to 90 percent in 2015, NYCOSH reports.
Additionally, wage theft was more common among employers who violate health and safety regulations.
In a Jan. 18, 2017 press release, NYCOSH Executive Director Charlene Obernauer commented, “We need to take action now to end the crisis of rising construction fatalities in New York State. These deaths are almost always preventable and occur on non-union job sites 80% of the time. Latino workers compose the majority of fall fatalities—57% in 2015; and there is a strong correlation between employers who steal workers’ wages and who force workers to work under unsafe conditions,”
“In this update of NYCOSH’s annual construction fatality reports, NYCOSH finds alarming trends, including an uptick in worker fatalities in New York State and New York City, an increasing number of accidents in construction, an increase in deaths due to falls, and safety violations at 90 percent of construction fatality sites,” the report states.
Report Suggests More Training, Legislative Action
NYCOSH highlights several strategies to address the concerning findings in the report. These steps would be implemented in the hopes of preventing further construction injuries and fatalities. The organization calls for adequate training to ensure that workers know how to do their job safely. Specifically, the report says that all New York City construction workers should complete OSHA 10 or equivalent training.
OSHA 10 is a 10-hour course designed to educate workers on the most common injuries and fatalities to occur on construction sites. Current regulations only require OSHA 10 for workers on buildings 10 stories or larger with footprints exceeding 100,000 square feet.
NYCOSH also calls for certain pieces of legislation to be defended and expanded, including the New York Scaffold Safety Law. The report advocates for the following pieces of legislation to be passed: The Construction Insurance Transparency Act (requires insurers to publicly disclose information about premiums), The Elevator Safety Act (ensures elevator work is done safely by licensed workers) and Criminal Contractors legislation (which seeks stricter penalties for employers who violate safety laws, preventing worker death due to negligence).
