Reading update:

YA graphic novel about werewolves. I was kind of meh on it. The artists switched off each chapter and I preferred the style of one of the a lot more.

Military fake dating romance. I like Annabeth Albert a lot so I enjoyed this, though it’s not my favorite thing I’ve read of hers. I was rooting for the two dumbasses to just admit they love each other. My major problem with this one was that I didn’t feel the barrier to them being together was...a thing. Like, once they realized they both had feelings for each other, which they did basically immediately, there was no reason for them to not just...get together for real.

I have the sequel to this one in my TBR pile as well, but it focuses on a character I found extremely annoying in this one. Then again I also didn’t like the side characters in Conventionally Yours, but I ended up enjoying Out of Character more.

I really wanted to like this one, and it was fine. But I didn’t love it? Maybe I just don’t really care for the rich businessman trope. Or the grumpy/sunshine trope? I also have the second book in this series in my TBR pile so we’ll see if I like that one better.

I was also pretty meh on this. idk? I liked the main character but I didn’t really care about the love interest. And it kind of felt like they only got together because the MC got his heart broken by the guy he spent most of the book pining for.

I loved this one! I love KJ Charles, and I seem to be a sucker for post WWI and post WWII mlm romances. Also I loved the fact that the love interest is shady and double-crossing but genuinely cares about the MC. *chef’s kiss* I had to order the other two in the series after I finished this one.

It’s weird to read basically all queer books and then to read a book that...isn’t queer. I picked this one up because it’s sci-fi, set in Minnesota, and by a Minnesotan author. It was pretty good, and I think the first in a series? It’s about how a small town in the Boundary Waters experiences a huge boom because meteorites containing this crazy metal hit there. Features Superpowers From Space (Stan Lee is thanked in the acknowledgements), an idealistic woman cop, and military experimentation.

Very good book that’s inspired by the HH Holmes murders during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair (The Devil in the White City is a nonfiction book about the subject, if you’re familiar with that). The story centers on a Jewish teen who more or less gets possessed by the spirit of the young man he loves, who is murdered by a serial killer who appears to be targeting young Jewish men. I love World’s Fair settings, and I haven’t read many books with a Jewish cast of characters, particularly not queer Jewish characters, so that was very cool. I recommend this one.

This has been sitting in my TBR pile for like 5 years, and I finally read it. It was a WWII book? idk. I know people love it but it was a solid 3 stars for me. Easy read, though, so despite its length, I got through it fast.

Why have my last three reads had red covers? I didn’t do that on purpose. Anyway I’m almost halfway through this one and it’s good...but idk if I’ll continue with the series because I read a review that mentioned the endgame romance is a polyship, and I find polyships very squicky (no shade if you like them, they’re just not for me). The world is interesting and I like the main character, and the character who presumably will be his love interest down the line. I’ll have to see how I feel once I finish it.

Liu Kang

He had already known about your powers, given the keeper of time and all. You often kept your mind reading ability to yourself, for your own benefit, so you already knew that he knew.

He was your main support and guide in honing your abilities, bringing you to the monks for daily training. He was uplifting and gave you gentle praise constantly.

The monks, on the other hand, had never seen such power. They were fascinated beyond belief, and couldn’t help but look on in awe at your prowess.

Bi-han

Your power had intrigued him, brought him out of his shell enough to let you in before closing it again. His gentler side a stranger to all but yourself.

You two were an absolute unit of a team. Often mingling your powers together during battle, such as lifting him a little bit higher, creating energy to strengthen icy projectiles and what not.

You were valuable when it came to enemies of the Lin Kuei. An intruder in the base? He’ll have you interrogate them for information, whether that be straight mind reading or bending reality was entirely up to you.

And once the job was done successfully, he was right by your side to praise you for your work, in private mostly.

He could never really hide his feelings, with your mind reading and all, it was all right there on paper for you. Something troubling him? You know.

Shang Tsung

To him, you’d be quite the fascinating specimen at first meeting. Love is a bit of a bottom of the list fort of thing.

He was taken aback himself when he landed you as his s/o. And such a powerful s/o you are.

He almost considered using your love for him to his advantage. Just his little toy to manipulate and bend to his will, carefully of course, who knows how much damage you could do to him if you found out his plan.

Your power fascinated him, often taking you to his lab to watch you move various objects and terrify his subjects with waking nightmares.

You were a lethal weapon to him, and one he could use in his quest for realm domination and power. How afraid others would be of his loyal pet, breaking others with fear and pain with just a snap of his finger.

“Something the matter, my love?” You’d place a hand on his arm, breaking him of his deep daydreaming. He reply with his usual cocky smirk, “of course, why wouldn’t I be?”

He had it all planned out, except one thing he missed, a small but vital detail. You could read his plan every time he thought it up, his mind open and obedient to skim at your will.

Havik

Power, and liberation, were his priorities in life, no matter how extended his mortality would be.

It would be a surprise to many, including himself, that he even had a s/o. However, I surprised no one that he chose such a powerful woman.

He thought of using you, at first, but eventually grew to accept you. You two were a team, and you would help him more than anyone in liberating order realm.

Given his backround, your abilities likely wouldn’t strike him as strange. He would be fascinated by how someone seeming so delicate held so much power in the palms of their hands.

Syzoth

Fascinated, in awe to say the least. He is absolutely gobsmacked by the sheer control you have over such abilities.

He almost felt like he was in the presence of a goddess, and felt slightly inferior. You had to tell him to stop formalities and to stop treating you like he isn’t worthy of you.

His nerves were erratic, when the time came to show his true form. He was worried you would be afraid, or dislike that form. Boy was he surprised, and in love, when you accepted him regardless of his true self.

chapter 4 - fiery eyes and tracksuits

The cooldown room hummed with a tense silence. Max, Lewis, and Y/N sat perched on their podium chairs, the champagne clinging to their hair and suits like glittering tears. Lewis, ever the gentleman, excused himself for a quick phone call, leaving Max and Y/N alone in the charged atmosphere.

Max stared at the wall, his jaw clenched, his gaze avoiding the fiery spark in Y/N's hazel eyes. The memory of their clash on track, the touch of her car against his, still thrummed in his veins. Then, a brush of warmth against his thigh, a feather-light touch that sent a jolt through him.

Y/N, seemingly oblivious, had shifted in her chair, her racing suit stretching taut across her curves. The accidental contact was fleeting, but it hung in the air like a charged wire. Max's breath hitched, his gaze darting to the spot where their skin had met, a flicker of heat igniting in his eyes.

"Tough race," Y/N said, her voice a breathy whisper, her eyes locked on his. "You were a storm out there."

Max swallowed, his throat suddenly dry. "You weren't exactly a picnic yourself," he countered, trying for his usual gruffness, but the words came out strained.

Y/N smiled, a slow, knowing curve of her lips. Her fingers began to dance over the zipper of her racing suit, a silent invitation that sent a shiver down Max's spine. "Just a rookie trying to learn the ropes," she purred, her gaze dropping to the exposed expanse of her Ferrari under-suit, a scarlet flame against her tanned skin.

Max's heart hammered against his ribs. The tension in the room crackled, thick and electric. He wanted to reach out, to trace the line of her neck, to mark her neck with a mark to how that she was his. to explore the heat that simmered beneath the surface. But the fear of rejection, of breaking the fragile truce they'd forged on track, held him back.

Just then, the door swung open, and Lewis walked in, his smile bright and oblivious. The spell shattered, the tension dissipating like smoke in the wind. Max's gaze snapped away from Y/N, his face a mask of cool indifference.

"Back to the rat race, then," Y/N sighed, zipping up her suit with a practiced ease that sent a pang of disappointment through Max.

The rest of the post-race interviews passed in a blur. Max answered questions on autopilot, his mind still replaying the touch of Y/N's skin, the fire in her eyes. As they parted ways, Y/N leaned in, her lips brushing his ear.

The Monaco night thrummed with an energy fueled by champagne and victory laps. The drivers had traded helmets for sleek suits and Ferraris for fancy cocktails, the post-race party a kaleidoscope of laughter and gossip. Y/N, the star of the show, glided through the crowd in a black bodycon dress that clung to her like a second skin. Her fiery hair cascaded down her shoulders, framing a face adorned with a mischievous grin. All while sporting a hickey on her neck

"That hickey, darling," Carlos purred, his eyes twinkling as they landed on the crimson mark peeking from beneath her necklace, "is quite the souvenir."

Y/N's cheeks flushed a becoming shade of scarlet. "Just a friendly exchange of congratulations," she said, batting her lashes innocently. "Some guys know how to celebrate." Y/N was purely bluffing, she had burnt her neck while curling her hair, but hey, playing into hilarious rumors was her specialty.

Max, simmering across the room, scoffed. "More like celebrating something else," he muttered under his breath, his usual gruffness laced with a sharp edge of jealousy. Every laugh Y/N shared, every lingering glance exchanged with another driver, felt like a blow to his chest.

Meanwhile, Y/N had found herself captivated by Charles' girlfriend, Alexandra Saint Mleux. ( WE LOVE ALEXANDRA SM ) "So, tell me all about the Italian stallion," Y/N teased, her smile playful.

Alexandra giggled, leaning in conspiratorially. "Oh, Charles! He's…passionate. Like a Ferrari engine on full throttle."

Alexandra winked. "Don't tell him I said that, but trust me, the real victory was after the lights went out."

Their conversation, laced with teasing and veiled innuendo, flowed like vintage champagne. Max, unable to tear his gaze away, felt a familiar heat crawl up his neck. The image of Y/N and some random guy, tangled in a post-race celebration, ignited a flame of possessiveness in his gut.

He tried to dismiss it. They were colleagues, rivals, nothing more. But the thought of Y/N's fiery laughter echoing in someone else's embrace, the whisper of her kiss lingering on someone else's lips, was almost unbearable.

The night wore on, the air thick with unspoken desires and veiled intentions. Y/N, the captivating enigma, danced her way through the party, leaving a trail of smoldering glances and whispered rumors in her wake. Max, a storm brewing beneath the surface, watched her every move, the green monster gnawing at his insides.

So, I wrote a little something, it’s just some relaxing time with the Lin Kuei girlies, a little suggestive maybe but no ratings apply. I sigh with relief as my aching body slips into the welcome warmth of the hot springs, enjoying the luxuries of the Lin Kuei’s main temple. I have been sick all week thanks to my youngest son bringing home the flu from school, thankfully my flu shot from last year seemed to help and I was able to keep it going for the most part but today my body had had enough. I sink up to my chin in the blissful, restorative water before I hear soft footfalls, I don’t think much of them though.

“Lady Sol, I didn’t mean to disturb you, I didn’t know you were here,” I hear a soft voice call.

“Sektor, it’s fine, come sit with me,” I call my husband’s second-in-command over, we’re quite close and I’m quite fond of her company.

“Again my apologies,” she repeats and slips gracefully in next to me, close but not too close to feel uncomfortable knowing I had not grown up with public baths as she had.

“How are the new initiates doing? Bi-Han has been so busy getting ready for his brother’s wedding that he hasn’t said much,” I crack an eye open to glance at the female warrior.

“It’s going well, the new recruits are shaping up to be worthy of the Lin Kuei name,” Sektor relaxing as if she suddenly remembered she could be herself with me.

“How’s Cyrax? I haven’t seen her in a few days, she usually works with the twins on Wednesdays.” I reply a bit worried about her whereabouts.

“Apologies my lady, I was away on a mission this week, I thought the Grandmaster would have told you,” Cyrax suddenly appears before joining us in the relaxing water.

“Honestly he might have, I don’t listen to everything he says on the best weeks and poor Shixue has been sick with the flu all week and gave it to me and my brain has been a quagmire,” I respond apologetically.

“Are you feeling any better?” Sektor asks, her warm lips pressed against my forehead checking for a fever. “You feel warm still,” she frowns.

“Sektor I’m in a hot spring, of course I’m going to be warm, I’m fine now, well except for my stomach but that’s tolerable,” I try and assuage her worries.

“Are you pregnant again?” Cyrax chimes in, her brown eyes suddenly lighting up.

I laugh loudly, “I hope not! The egg hasn’t even hatched yet, though Bi-Han would be thrilled if I was.”

“He does love children, you wouldn’t think it with his abrasive personality but I’ve never seen him happier than when he became a father,” Sektor remarks sinking back into the water.

“You can give him one next,” I laugh and splash her lightly.

Her face goes as scarlet as her armor and she starts sputtering, “my lady I couldn’t possibly I mean what are you talking about he’s my Grandmaster and your husband!”

“Sektor I’m not blind, I know your feelings for him, it’s fine I can share him again,” I smile at her and give her shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

“And I can be an auntie again!” Cyrax exclaims flinging water everywhere in her excitement.

“I can’t win against you two can I?” Sektor laughs before sighing, “how do I tell him though?”

“I can if you like, or, or better idea, you just join me in bed one night and we’ll seduce him together! He loves seeing Sareena and I together, I’m sure he’d go crazy for the two of us,” I grin at her feeling confident in my plan.

“M-my lady? The two of us? Together? With the Grandmaster?” Sektor’s voice rises in octaves as she continues.

“Well yeah, we share Sektor it’s all a big package, you don’t get Bi-Han without me too,” I explain.

“I-I understand and that’s perfectly acceptable I’m just afraid my lack of experience may displease you both,” she blurts out flushing deeper.

“Oh don’t worry about that, Bi-Han will LOVE that and I’ll help you out,” I smile softly feeling the tired knots finally leave my body.

“Too bad I’m not in love with the Grandmaster too, I’m feeling left out!” Cyrax pouts playfully before draping herself across my lap.

“At least you have the kids to keep you company though,” I laugh and pinch her cheeks lightly.

“There’s always Syzoth,” Sektor ventures trying to cover up her perpetual blush.

“He is cute, but I think I’m more into girls these days,” Cyrax hums.

“Thank you for volunteering my other partner,” I shove Sektor playfully, before the three of us can get into a massive water fight we hear heavy footfalls.

“Qin are you in here?” Bi-Han’s deep voice calls out.

“I am but I have company pervert so no peeking!” I call back sticking my arms over the girls chests as they both try and sink as far in the water as possible.

“Who’s in there,” he asks sounding a bit annoyed as if he wanted some alone time.

“Sektor and Cyrax are keeping me company,” I reply.

“Oh, good I just wanted to check on you since you don’t feel well and I was worried you’d feel too lightheaded. Don’t stay in too long, Bingbing is looking for you for a bedtime story, I tried but nope it’s gotta be Mama,” he explains before turning to leave.

“Well ladies, looks like I’ve been summoned, Sektor come by tomorrow before dinner and we’ll work something out,” I give her a wink before standing up and grabbing a towel, I dry myself off and follow after Bi-Han who waited for me.

“What business do you have with Sektor?” He asks, brows furrowing with curiosity.

“You’ll find out sooner or later, but I think you’ll be pleased,” I smile and stand on my tiptoes to press a kiss to my husband’s cold cheek. I pull on layers of warm clothing before donning my fur-lined robe and heading back into the bracing cold to read to my daughter.

it’s that time again!

this is the squeakquel to my last post, where i introduced two of my olnf mc’s. today, i offer you two more!

Ariel Vance is one of the most polite and level-headed kids you’ll ever meet. Though they’re pretty tall for their age, their soft-spoken, thoughtful demeanor gives a very understated impression.

Ariel is the mediator of most situations they’re in. They’ll do their best to always find a solution that makes everyone happy, and let others lead. Even upon their initial arrival in Golden Grove, Ariel is quick to let Tamarack’s strong will and Qiu’s confident leadership direct the group’s path while they watch over everyone in their own quiet way.

But things won’t always be sunshine for this gentle soul. Their intentions might be pure, but they can tend to look down on their friends, seeing them as kids they have to take care of. As Ariel grows up, they’ll have to learn to let others take care of themselves- and to finally look inwards and seek what they really want, not just what everyone else wants of them. But through this process, they can count on their best friend, Mx. Qiu Lin, to give them a hand.

Ariel is the bookish sort, preferring time spent reading and writing over being active in the great outdoors. And though they’ll learn a lot from their studies, Golden Grove has lessons to teach that can’t be learned from a book.

Suffice it to say that my next MC doesn’t have the same problem.

Mira Scarlet has always been the quiet type. But what that long, dark, unkempt hair hides is that it’s not born out of shyness- it’s born out of an intolerance for other people’s BS. If you’re around when she finally does speak up- duck for cover.

Mira is reckless, confident, and independent to a fault. She’s quick to anger, which isn’t always a bad thing- she’ll stick up for her friends in a heartbeat when they’re slighted.

Mira lives her life in the fast lane, and if you can’t keep her pace, she wants you out of the road. Golden Grove is far too sleepy of a place for her, and she can’t wait until she’s old enough to fly out of this town on a motorcycle, never looking back.

Even without much outward interest in making friends, her strength and spirit does draw some to her, and those she calls friends receive her fierce support. If anyone can convince her to finally take it slow once in a while, it’s her best friend, Tamarack Baumann.

Mira isn’t interested in trying to deal with the consequences of her recklessness, but no matter how fast you can go on a bike, life always catches up to you. She’s gonna learn that, one way or another.
