Alien story thoughts:

An alien race whose lives are physically connected to their hair, so they never cut it. It doesn’t shed like a human’s and and it is also stronger, so it’s difficult to pull out by accident. However, cutting it directly isn’t very hard so they wear it up most of the time as a precaution. Only in places where they feel completely safe or where it is politically necessary—such as meetings with allies where they must demonstrate their trust—do they wear their hair down. By the time these alien are adults, their hair is long enough to drag on the ground.

As space travel expands and brings new planets and species in contact, one of these aliens gets a human significant other. When the alien truly begins to trust and feel comfortable with their lover they begin letting their hair down when they’re alone. One day they’re in the human’s quarters sitting on the bed and their hair is spilling off the mattress and onto the floor. The human is awestruck, and they begin to take great pride and joy in brushing it for them as well as trying out lots of complex and fanciful hairstyles.
