Scrublands: Award-winning ‘ripping page-turner’ becomes the latest crime thriller shot in Victoria
Tumblr media
The adaptation of the novel Scrublands into a crime series is the second Stan original after Bali 2002. Photo: Stan
Ever since award-winning Australian crime writer Chris Hammer published his 2018 thriller Scrublands, television networks and production studios worked furiously to get their hands on the rights to bring the story to life.
Canberra-based Hammer, a former political journalist with just two non-fiction books under his belt, couldn’t believe it when he landed a book deal with Allen & Unwin to publish his debut fiction novel.
Shortly after, he sold the international and TV rights.
“I was laughing and crying, it was just unbelievable,” he told The Guardian at the time.
Fast forward to 2023, and Scrublands – an Easy Tiger production co-commissioned by Australian streamer Stan and the Nine Network, in association with VicScreen – is now filming across Victoria.
Easy Tiger founder Ian Collie and its chief executive Rob Gibson issued a joint statement, saying: “From the moment we opened Chris Hammer’s ripping page-turner, we knew Scrublands was destined to be a must-watch crime series”.
“[It] will be an unmissable TV event for rusted-on Chris Hammer fans and everyone else alike.”
Hammer, too, can’t wait to see it, telling his 2000 Instagram followers he’s thrilled with the cast, the director and just about anyone involved in the series.
“Can’t wait,” he wrote on Tuesday.
instagram
What’s it about?
Scrublands was an instant bestseller in 2018, topping the Australian fiction charts and shortlisted for Best Debut Fiction at the Indie Book Awards.
It was also shortlisted for Best General Fiction at the Australian Book Industry Awards and won the UK Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey Debut Dagger Award.
The story is set against the backdrop of the New South Wales Riverina, in an isolated country town called Riversend, where a charismatic and dedicated young priest (Jay Ryan) calmly opens fire on his congregation, killing five parishioners.
One year later, Hammer’s main character, investigative journalist Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold) arrives in town to write what should be a simple feature story on the anniversary of the tragedy.
“But when Martin’s instincts kick in and he digs beneath the surface, the previously accepted narrative begins to fall apart and he finds himself in a life-and-death race to uncover the truth,” according to the Stan synopsis.
Turns out there’s a love triangle, fraud, organised crime and cover-ups, all sub-plots worthy of a series.
Prepare to be ‘dazzled’
Although we’re yet to discover how the novel has been adapted to the television series by scriptwriters Felicity Packard (lead writer, and she’s penned Ep 1), Kelsey Munro and Jock Serong, one book reviewer said it was a first-rate crime mystery who was “dazzled” by Hammer throughout the book.
“There is a sense of imminence to Scrublands, particularly in its recognition of drought and the plight of small towns,” Amanda Barrett wrote.
“This one sure bowled me over right from the hooking premise and opening sequence.
“Scrublands will floor you.
Although it’s a work of fiction, she said “there is so much truth to Hammer’s writing and his depiction of the events that take place in Riversend”.
“This is a fastidious novel that works to build a complete picture of what is happening across many country towns, across all states and territories in Australia.
“Riversend is simply a euphemism for so many rural locales in Australia that are grappling with the impact of drought, a decline in services and a rise in crime.”
As a result, she said, the book came across as an authentic tale, tapping into issues that strike at the heart of rural townships.

Hard work starts for the cast at the table readings. Photo: Stan
Table readings of the adaptation with the lead cast of Arnold (Black Sails, Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS), Bella Heathcote (C*A*U*G*H*T, Relic, Pieces of Her) and Jay Ryan (It: Chapter Two, Top of the Lake) have been completed as cast hit the road to various locations across the state.
Nine’s director of television Michael Healy says “joining forces with the teams at Stan and Easy Tiger on Scrublands has realised an ambition we have had since Chris Hammer’s novel was published in 2018″.
He says they’re confident it will turn into must-watch television, suitable for a global audience.
VicScreen boss Caroline Pitcher reveals more than 500 Victorians will be employed throughout the series, “adding to the state’s pipeline of local productions”.
Scrublands is the second co-commissioned production between Nine and Stan following Bali 2002.

Some silly thoughts
You know what can be fun? Assessing things based on criteria which the original thing was never meant to fill.
To that end, I present ...
Three Barbie Princess Movies In Descending Order Of How Able I Feel To Respect The Characters As Politicians
3. The Princess And The Pauper
The princess’ tutor-slash-love-interest recruits her doppelganger to impersonate her, to thwart the queen’s Evil Advisor’s plan to ... restore economic prosperity by giving back the gold he stole.
There’s a fun post talking about how easily this movie could be redone with Preminger as a hero. His whole evil plot was basically Robin Hood with extra steps.
1, steal gold out of the royal mine, slowly enough to not be obvious sabotage rather than the mine naturally running out.
2, go on a journey to provide a backstory to a sudden mysterious fortune.
3, marry into the royal family, thus having the status to make policy decisions directly rather than just advising on them, and distribute wealth to the people, saving the kingdom’s economy (after ruining it) and creating a legacy as a hero.
It explicitly says during the opening narration that the queen wanted to consult with Preminger about the looming economic crisis, but couldn’t because he was out of town! If he’d only delayed his trip or been back sooner, he could’ve made his proposal before it even occurred to her to betroth the princess to a neighbouring king instead!
Yes the big problems were the lying and the kidnapping and the attempted murder, but only the lying was part of his original plan.
To be fair to Julian, all he knew at the start was that the princess went missing under suspicious circumstances.
Anyway, the queen in this movie seems to have a decent grip on things, trying to address a problem before it becomes a crisis. Political marriages go against modern sensibilities but are a historically established thing and therefore understandable in the setting.
Still. Just abdicate and let Preminger have the crown he wants so badly.
2. The Island Princess
A prince falls in love with a castaway, to the dismay of his parents and the mother of his arranged fiancée. Said would-be mother-in-law is also planning to kill off his family in revenge for her family getting banished the last time they tried to kill his family.
This movie. This. Freaking. Movie. I love Luciana dearly, but every other royal in this movie is SO DUMB.
Ro’s animals may have brought a sleeping sickness from their island, which is now affecting the local animals? Better throw them all in the dungeon without even asking whether Ro knows of a possible treatment!
I blame the guard, not the royal family, for dismissing Ro when she tries to tell him she knows a cure, but the king and queen - or, the prince’s scientist friend - really should have asked before that point. The scriptwriters could then have Ro thrown into the dungeon after she makes the ‘baseless accusation’ that Queen Ariana poisoned all the animals.
And I get it, I get that the king wanted to marry off his son before the boy could elope or just run away to sea, but the middle of a health crisis was not the time to be throwing a royal wedding!
They didn’t know the animals were poisoned! They should’ve had the capital region (or however far the 'sickness’ had reached) quarantined so that the sickness didn’t spread to the livestock of isolated areas, neighbouring kingdoms, and trading partners!
Priorities are deeply skewed.
1. Princess Charm School
The most extreme offender on this list. Not necessarily for specific events, but for part of the premise of the setting:
Why are other kingdoms letting a foreign school decide whether their heirs to the throne are fit for coronation?
On some level, I get how failure to graduate could raise questions about an heir’s fitness to claim the throne. The school is a good networking site, and not graduating would hurt your reputation amongst your peers and thus your connections. Also, ages are unclear, so I’m not sure if the school is a metaphor for high school or for college, but either way, dropping out or being expelled might lower public trust in the young royal’s intelligence and/or self-discipline.
But they could have kept the graduation scene at the movie’s climax without making it a coronation scene for anyone besides Delancey.
And speaking of Delancey ... “Once I’m crowned, Gardenia is mine for life”? Um, no? There’s this little thing called ‘abdication’ that a ruler can do. If there’s no precedent for it in your country, you could set that precedent.
I guess they could’ve done a scene where it turns out Delancey literally does not know what abdication is because her mom hid the concept from her in order to keep her as a puppet queen, but that probably would’ve gone a bit over the heads of the target audience.
Great school for poise, not so much for politics.

About Adaptations
Ok, I have a couple of thought posts on RWRB written that I want to post (My entry on the movie in my handwritten movie+book journal is already 22 pages long and I’m not even close to being done, I just love it so damn much), but I feel like I need to preface all my thoughts by explaining how I feel about adaptations so my thoughts make more sense and certain groups of people don’t come at me with pitchforks or something.
Plus I just think it’s a fun mindset to have for fandoms that have different representations!
Some of the fandom/franchises I’ve been in that impacted me the most have adaptations, and more often than not the adaptation’s fandom is the first one I approach: MCU/ Marvel Comics, Shadowhunters TV/ The Shadowhunter Chronicles, and well now, RWRB and RWRB Movie.
Getting into Marvel actually helped me create this system a lot because it's sort of part of their lore, and that’s also when I started reading fanfics.
See, the way I understand these different stories with the same core, is that they are alternate universes of each other. The main characters are fixed beings, and the shared events in both timelines are fixed events. All differences are divergences in the timeline.
Granted in our reality, differences in adaptations have their own reason such as constraints in visual media, casting limitations, scriptwriters with different visions etc, but treating them as legit other worlds, and seeing them as a network of different universes helps me enjoy all of them a lot more. That way I don’t mind the changes made that much, as long as within its own universe, it’s consistent and meaningful. (ex: if significant events that happen on a character are removed but the character’s traits that are supposed from the said event don’t change, we have a problem)
And some fun bonuses of that are:
1, when something in the adaptation is directly from the original source material, like a line, or a significant object, it makes me giddy because it feels like these two different worlds are connected by some wonderful magic
2, if there are things in the original source material that isn’t in the adaptation but they don’t conflict with what’s in the adaptation, at the very least in my mind, I add it into the adaptation universe (I do this especially when writing fanfics)
3, when I’m drawing fanart or picturing the book characters, I blend the appearances of the original material with the adaptation, ex: for Shadowhunters, when I draw book Alec, I draw him with blue eyes and black hair from the books, but add in the eyebrow scar and rune placements from Matt Daddario’s portrayal in the TV show; for RWRB when I picture the book version of Alex and Henry, I still see Taylor Zeker Perez and Nicholas Galitzine just with some difference: the book’s height difference (Ha, sorry Taylor), Nick with shorter blonde (like Prince Robert from Cinderella 2021 length) and blue eyes, Taylor looking more like he did as Marco in the Kissing Booth 2 with shorter hair but a longer fringe
I don't know why, I just find the sort of idea of "xxx stays the same across universes" really endearing.
Anyways, yeah. I get the want for book accuracy since the idea of adaptation is “seeing the book come to life”, but sometimes it’s just not that doable. Thinking like this makes it a lot more fun for me, and honestly, I just want to be happy when I’m watching/reading stuff, and this does that.

Tumblr media
Understanding the California Video Production Scene
Videos production in california landscape is characterized by its extensive resources, talented professionals, and a plethora of opportunities. It is essential to recognize the roots of this industry, which have been firmly planted since the early 20th century. The film industry began in Hollywood, where studios like Paramount, Warner Bros., and Universal set the stage for blockbuster movies. Today, this rich history has evolved into a multi-faceted industry encompassing various genres, including commercial production, documentaries, short films, and web series.
As you delve into video production, it is crucial to understand the various aspects that contribute to a successful project. This includes not only the creative elements such as scriptwriting, cinematography, and editing but also the logistical components like budgeting, scheduling, and talent acquisition. In California, the abundance of experienced professionals and cutting-edge technology creates a unique environment that fosters collaboration and innovation.
Building a Strong Network
Networking is an invaluable tool in the California video production landscape. Relationships can open doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and valuable insights into the industry. Attend industry events, film festivals, and workshops to connect with fellow filmmakers, producers, and potential clients. Engaging with local film commissions and joining professional organizations can further expand your network, providing access to resources and support.
Moreover, social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook are essential for showcasing your work and connecting with others in the industry. Sharing behind-the-scenes content, project updates, and engaging with your audience can help you build a personal brand and establish credibility. Remember, in the world of video production, who you know can be just as important as what you know.
Navigating Legalities and Regulations
When producing video content in California, understanding the legalities and regulations surrounding the industry is paramount. This includes securing permits for filming, adhering to copyright laws, and respecting the rights of individuals featured in your projects. The California Film Commission provides resources and guidance for filmmakers, detailing the necessary steps to ensure compliance with local laws.
Additionally, securing contracts with talent, crew, and vendors is essential to protect your interests and outline expectations. Clear communication and legal documentation can help avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth production process. Familiarize yourself with labor laws, particularly concerning union regulations and rights for working actors and crew members, as California has a rich history of unionized labor in the film industry.
Embracing Technology and Innovation
California is synonymous with technological innovation, making it imperative for video producers to stay abreast of the latest advancements in equipment and techniques. High-definition cameras, drones, and advanced editing software have revolutionized the way stories are told through video. Investing in the latest technology can enhance the quality of your productions, making them more appealing to audiences.
Moreover, the rise of streaming platforms has shifted the landscape of video consumption. Understanding the nuances of producing content for platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu is essential for reaching a broader audience. Tailoring your content to meet the specific requirements and preferences of these platforms can significantly impact the success of your projects. Familiarize yourself with trends in viewer engagement, such as interactive content and personalized storytelling, to stay ahead of the curve.
Crafting Compelling Narratives
At the heart of every successful video production lies a compelling narrative. Regardless of the format—be it a commercial, documentary, or narrative film—the story you tell must resonate with your audience. Understanding your target demographic is crucial; tailor your content to their interests, values, and preferences. Conduct thorough research to identify trends and themes that are currently capturing viewers' attention.
Collaborating with skilled writers and creative professionals can enhance your storytelling abilities. Consider hosting brainstorming sessions with your team to explore fresh ideas and perspectives. Utilize techniques such as character development, conflict, and resolution to create engaging narratives that captivate audiences from start to finish.
Managing Budgets and Resources
Budgeting is an integral part of the video production process. California's vibrant industry offers a range of resources, but it can also be expensive. Careful planning and resource management are essential to ensure that your project remains financially viable. Break down your budget into categories such as pre-production, production, and post-production costs, and allocate funds accordingly.
When seeking funding for your projects, consider exploring grants, crowdfunding platforms, and sponsorship opportunities. Many local organizations and government programs are dedicated to supporting the arts, providing financial assistance to filmmakers. Building a strong pitch that outlines your project's vision, target audience, and potential impact can attract investors and collaborators.
Adapting to Changing Trends
The video production landscape is constantly evolving, influenced by technological advancements, shifts in consumer behavior, and emerging trends. Staying informed about industry developments is essential for long-term success. Regularly consume industry publications, attend conferences, and participate in workshops to keep abreast of new techniques and trends.
Additionally, flexibility is key in adapting to changing market demands. Be open to experimenting with different formats, styles, and distribution channels. The rise of short-form content and the popularity of social media platforms have changed the way audiences consume video, making it essential to diversify your offerings and reach viewers where they are.
Conclusion: Charting Your Course in California's Video Production Landscape
Navigating the California video production landscape presents both challenges and opportunities. By understanding the industry's history, building a strong network, embracing technology, crafting compelling narratives, managing budgets, and adapting to trends, you can position yourself for success. As you embark on your journey in this dynamic industry, remember that collaboration, creativity, and resilience are key components in achieving your goals. One of Tracy’s most famous principles is to tackle your most challenging task first thing in the morning.
For podcasters, this could mean recording an episode or conducting an interview.
By handling the most daunting task early, you free up mental space and build momentum for the rest of the day.
2. 📊 Apply the 80/20 Rule
The 80/20 rule, or Pareto Principle, states that 20% of your activities will account for 80% of your results. Identify the key activities that drive the most impact for your podcast—whether it's engaging with your audience, producing high-quality content, or marketing—and focus on those.
3. 📅 Plan Every Day in Advance
Spend a few minutes each evening planning the next day. List your tasks in order of priority and allocate specific time slots for each.
This practice ensures that you hit the ground running each morning with a clear plan, reducing wasted time and increasing productivity.
4. ⏱️ Use Time Blocks
Time blocking involves scheduling dedicated blocks of time for specific tasks.
For podcasters, this could mean setting aside time for scriptwriting, recording, editing, and social media promotion.
This structured approach minimizes distractions and helps maintain a consistent workflow.
5. 📦 Batch Similar Tasks
Group similar tasks together to streamline your workflow. For instance, batch your email responses, social media updates, and audio editing into separate time slots.
This reduces the cognitive load of switching between different types of tasks and improves efficiency.
6. 🏰 Build a Bunker to Prevent Distractions
Creating a distraction-free environment is essential.
For podcasters, this might involve setting up a dedicated recording space, turning off notifications during work hours, or using tools like noise-canceling headphones.
Minimizing interruptions allows for deeper focus and better quality work.
7. 🗂️ Stay Organized
Keeping your workspace and digital files organized saves time and reduces stress.
Use project management tools to track your podcasting schedule, store your scripts and notes in an organized manner, and maintain a clean and tidy recording area.
An organized environment enhances productivity and creativity.
8. 🎯 Set Clear Goals
Having clear, specific goals helps you stay focused and motivated.
Whether it’s increasing your listener base, securing more sponsorships, or improving your content quality, defining your goals gives you direction and purpose.
Break down these goals into actionable steps to make them more attainable.
9. 🚫 Learn to Say No
As a podcaster, you might receive numerous requests for collaborations, interviews, and events.
While networking is important, it's crucial to evaluate these opportunities and decline those that don’t align with your goals or add significant value.
Saying no when necessary helps you stay focused on your priorities.
10. 🧘‍♂️ Take Care of Your Health
Productivity is closely tied to your physical and mental well-being.
Ensure you get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and take breaks to recharge.
Maintaining good health boosts your energy levels and improves your ability to stay focused and productive throughout the day.
By implementing these time management hacks from Brian Tracy, I’ve been able to streamline my podcasting process, reduce stress, and achieve better results.
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to elevate your podcast to the next level, these strategies can help you make the most of your time and achieve your goals more efficiently.
Incorporating these practices into your daily routine can significantly enhance your productivity and ensure that your podcasting journey is both successful and enjoyable.
Time management is not just about working harder, but about working smarter, and these tips are a great place to start.

Scriptwriting for TV and Film: Essential Insights
Scriptwriting for TV and film is a fascinating and challenging art form that requires creativity, technical knowledge, and an understanding of the industry’s demands. Whether you’re a budding screenwriter or someone curious about the craft, understanding the fundamentals of scriptwriting is crucial. Here, we’ll explore the key elements of scriptwriting for TV and film and delve into the RSFI Institute’s role in nurturing future screenwriters.
Understanding the Basics of Scriptwriting
Tumblr media
Concept Development
Every great script begins with a compelling concept. This is the foundation of your story and involves brainstorming unique ideas, characters, and settings. The concept should be original yet relatable, providing a fresh perspective on universal themes. Once you have a solid concept, you can begin outlining your plot.
Structure and Formatting
Scripts for TV and film follow specific structures and formats. Typically, a film script is around 90 to 120 pages, with each page representing one minute of screen time. TV scripts vary depending on the type of show – a half-hour sitcom, for example, is usually around 22 to 25 pages. Adhering to industry-standard formatting is essential, as it ensures your script is professional and easy to read.

Character Development
Tumblr media
Creating believable and engaging characters is at the heart of scriptwriting. Characters should have distinct voices, backgrounds, and motivations that drive the story forward. It's important to develop detailed character profiles to ensure consistency and depth throughout your script.
Dialogue
Writing dialogue that sounds natural yet purposeful is a skill that comes with practice. Dialogue should reveal character traits, advance the plot, and maintain the story’s pace. Striking the right balance between exposition and subtlety is key to crafting authentic conversations.
Scene Construction
Each scene in your script should serve a specific purpose, whether it’s advancing the plot, developing characters, or creating tension. Effective scenes are dynamic and visually engaging, with clear objectives and a sense of progression. Properly structuring scenes helps maintain the audience’s interest and keeps the narrative flowing smoothly.
Rewriting and Feedback
Scriptwriting is an iterative process. Your first draft is unlikely to be perfect, and revisions are a natural part of the journey. Seeking feedback from peers, mentors, or professional script consultants can provide valuable insights and help you refine your script. Embrace constructive criticism and be prepared to make significant changes to improve your work.

The Indie Film Community Celebrates: 2024 Independent Spirit Awards Round-Up
The 2024 Independent Spirit Awards was a dazzling showcase of the year's most provocative and stirring indie films. An emblem of original storytelling, the awards night stands as a testament to the relentless creativity of filmmakers who, undeterred by smaller budgets, bring unique stories and perspectives to the silver screen. With the stars out on what appeared to be a magical evening, the indie film industry honored a range of works that might not always hit the mainstream radar but have struck a chord with those craving cinematic inventiveness. Catering to a diverse palette, the event highlighted the fresh vision and unorthodox narratives that these creators brought to life. The Winners of the Night Leading the charge, the unforgettable film "XYZ" was showered with accolades, snagging not only Best Feature but also Best Director. The film's ability to weave a rich, poignant story was just one aspect of why "XYZ" resonated so deeply with audiences and critics alike. At the heart of its success, a troupe of standout performances further solidified its position as the darling of this year's Spirit Awards. In a brilliant display of tantalizing narratives comes "ABC," a film that topped the Best First Feature category, leaving an indelible mark as a debut to remember. Fresh cinematic voices tackled everything from social injustices to avant-garde narratives, setting high bars for ingenuity and fearless storytelling. Not to be undermined, films across categories explored the far corners of genre and technique, often stretching limited resources to create art that rivals, and sometimes surpasses, their blockbuster counterparts. It was also a night to commemorate those film professionals fostering this fertile ground for independent cinema. Awards not just encompassed the artistry seen on screen but extended to those off-screen too—the scriptwriters, cinematographers, and editors whose innovative contributions are crucial yet sometimes overlooked in the industry's more glamorous limelight. Looking Forward As the final applauses faded and the glitter settled, the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards left an indelible impression of inspiration. For movie-goers, it promises a rich roster of untold stories waiting in the wings. For creators, it cements the notion that the independent film community is a robust, empathetic network, eager to support brave storytelling that questions, enthralls, and enchants. The full roster of winners at the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards is sure to steer curious viewers towards a rewarding cinematic journey.
