The Giants At A Glance- The Giants have mostly been a .500 team this season. They made a late splash by scooping up Matt Chapman, Blake Snell, and Jorge Soler in free agency. Chapman has been decent, Soler only has ten homers, and Snell hasn't been fully healthy until now. Heliot Ramos has really come on with fourteen home runs and forty-five RBI. He will be at the All-Star Game in Arlington next week. LaMonte Wade Jr. has been great with a .316 average and always seems to find a way on base. Patrick Bailey is one of the best young catchers in the game currently. Jung-Hoo Lee was having a solid rookie year before tearing his labrum in his left shoulder. The Giants rotation is geting healthy again as Blake Snell is back. Alex Cobb threw two innings in a rehab game for San Jose and Robbie Ray is close to a rehab start. The Giants bullpen has shouldered a lot of the workload and still have a 3.92 ERA, which is 14th in baseball. Taylor Rogers has a 1.93 ERA, Ryan Walker has struck out sixty-two over 48 innings of work, and Tyler Rogers has a 2.70 ERA. Erik Miller has emerged as a solid lefty out of the bullpen. Ohio brought a penguin to the College World Series

Kentucky carried a commanding 4-0 lead over Ohio into the top of the sixth inning, with starting ace Sean Hjelle dominating the Bobcats’ lineup from the get-go. Ohio needs to win if they want to avoid the losers bracket in the Lexington regional, and so the Bobcats’ bench brought out a RALLY PENGUIN to help spur a comeback.

Nigel is a very good penguin, what with him traveling to Lexington in early June to aid Ohio’s tournament run. Nigel is certainly feeling the heat here in the northern hemisphere, especially so since temperatures are reaching up into the mid-80s in Lexington on Friday.

Mingione has Kentucky sky-high for NCAA despite slow finish

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – They say a coach’s attitude can be contagious. If that’s the case, first-year coach Nick Mingione’s Kentucky Wildcats baseball team might not need the aid of sleep until sometime in August.

The Wildcats are back in the NCAA Tournament, and will host a regional for the first time since 2006 when they open play against Ohio University on Friday at noon in Cliff Hagan Stadium. The last (and only previous) time Kentucky played at home in the NCAA Tournament, it was 2006 and Mingione was a UK assistant for John Cohen.

“I remember standing right there in that (third-base) coaching box in 2006 and looking back and seeing people lined up in left field and thinking, ‘This is an awesome place,’” Mingione remembered this week, after learning his team’s tournament draw. “You guys heard me say in my (introductory) press conference, we’re going to win here. And I had a vision of this happening.”

 Mingione might’ve had the vision, but it’s safe to say the Wildcats are ahead of pretty much everyone else’s schedule. Dust off the standing room, get out the temporary bleachers and get ready. UK narrowly missed a chance to host a super regional, but enters NCAA Tournament play having beaten more RPI Top 50 teams than all but four other NCAA Tournament qualifiers.

The Wildcats are 39-20. After losing their first four games of the season (three of them at No. 2 NCAA national seed North Carolina), the Wildcats won 21 of 24 and went on to win 19 Southeastern Conference games (second-most in school history) and play for the conference’s regular-season championship on the final day of the regular season. They had the SEC pitcher of the year in sophomore Sean Hjelle, Mingione was the league coach of the year and the team led the conference in ten offensive categories.

More than that, they are a team that seems to exude “fun.” Even after some frustrating losses late in the season, Mingione said his meeting with the team after it lost in the SEC Tournament was one of the best he’s had with his players this season.

“I thought it was just a phenomenal meeting,” he said. “I told them this is my favorite time of year. In the SEC Tournament you saw some teams fighting for their seasons, right? Now, I told them, if they don’t love this time of year, they’re in the wrong locker room. Every single team is fighting for their season. It’s all on the line right now. I just love the way we’ve prepared, because that’s how we’ve prepared them, but at the same time, our season is on the line, and I love that.”

You name it, this first-year coach loves it. He doesn’t even want to really entertain the thought that his team lost momentum in dropping four of its last five games.

“So, you guys have heard me say this before, I’m not a big believer in momentum,” he told reporters. “I just believe that every single day and every single pitch provides an opportunity. Right? . . . So my definition is how do you get confidence? You get confidence from skill acquisition. . . . Our team has a skill. We can win baseball games. We can win in different ways. We can win close games, we can win a blowout game. However we need to win it, we can win it. That’s why our team has confidence. Another reason we have confidence is our schedule. We’ve played some really good teams, compared to some other teams, and we’ve beaten a lot of them. So with that, you have to have a skill, and our team has proven that.”

Mingione knows, the NCAA Tournament brings a different feel – even at.home. With bigger crowds and more seats, it takes some getting used to. But Mingione said he’ll be able to draw on his experience in ’06 to help his players.

 “I remember then it was different for our team, a different feel, a different environment,” he said. “So I’m really looking forward to getting our guys out here and explaining, none of that matters.”

Mingione promised in his introductory news conference to do things that had not been done in Kentucky baseball. Getting to an NCAA Super Regional would be one of them. The Wildcats could face rival Louisville if that happened, or even host it themselves if the Cardinals faltered in their regional. Mingione isn’t looking ahead, but did say he was surprised that Louisville fell to the No. 7 national seed after losing four of their last five. UK hung at No. 9 in the RPI despite its late losses.

Mingione said, “I wish I could be in those meetings,” when the NCAA is deciding the national seeds, but acknowledged that it doesn’t matter now. Only one thing matters to the Wildcats now – today’s game against Ohio.

“The most important game of our season is this one Friday,” he said. “I’ve told our players that. I don’t care about anybody else’s games. Our focus needs to be on us. So this will be a good exercise for our guys. They’re 18-22 years old, and want to talk about who is playing who in what regionals. I told them just think about your next left, your next practice. . . . We had an awesome practice today. I just loved our guys energy, enthusiasm, the way they’re bouncing around and flying around the field.”

It’s no surprise. Their coach is bouncing around, too. 

 “I’m just so happy to have a regional back here,” he said.

Bortles And Rolison Earn SEC Honors

Two Rebels earned SEC Baseball accolades when the league office released their all-conference lists Monday afternoon. Third baseman Colby Bortles was named second team All-SEC, while left-handed pitcher Ryan Rolison found a spot on the Freshman All-SEC team.

Bortles was a preseason second team All-SEC honoree, and the senior lived up to those expectations in his final season as a Rebel. Along with manning the hot corner, he leads the Rebels with 10 home runs and 42 RBI. A .270 hitter, Bortles also paces the team in multi-RBI games (12) over 54 starts. He’s hitting even better in SEC play with a .275 batting average. The Oviedo, Florida, native is the conference leader in sacrifice flies (7), which ranks 16th in the country. Playing in 212 games throughout his Ole Miss career, Bortles ranks 10th in program history with 153 RBI.

A highly-touted All-American out of high school, Rolison began the season in the bullpen before emerging as a key piece to the Ole Miss rotation. The Jackson, Tennessee, native is 6-3 on the 2017 campaign with a 3.06 ERA over 61.2 innings. Among qualified pitchers, the southpaw has allowed the fifth-fewest runs (23) in the SEC. Out of 18 appearances, Rolison has started nine games. His best outing of the year was against Missouri (April 22), tossing 6.0 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. Adding a career-high nine strikeouts in the start against the Tigers, Rolison earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors.

Bortles, Rolison and the rest of the Rebels will begin SEC Tournament play tomorrow afternoon, facing No. 20 Auburn for the fourth consecutive game. The winner will earn a spot into the double elimination portion of the tournament. First pitch from the Hoover Met in Hoover, Alabama is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

Ole Miss’ Rawlings Named To Rimington Trophy Watch List

Ole Miss junior Sean Rawlings has been named to the spring watch list for the 2017 Rimington Trophy, which honors the top center in Division I FBS college football.

Announced by the Rimington Trophy Committee on Monday, the watch list has 63 centers, including at least one from every FBS conference.

Rawlings, from Madison, Mississippi, has played in 21 games with 15 starts over the first two seasons of his Ole Miss career. He started seven games at right tackle and one at center a year ago and is a favorite to be the team’s full-time center entering his junior campaign. He was an SEC All-Freshman pick by Gridironnow.com in 2015 when he started seven games at right tackle and helped the Rebels return to the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1970.

Other SEC centers Joining Rawlings on the Rimington watch list are Alabama’s Bradley Bozeman, Arkansas’ Frank Ragnow, Auburn’s Austin Golson, Florida’s T.J. McCoy, LSU’s Will Clapp, South Carolina’s Alan Knoff and Texas A&M’s Colton Prater.

While more than a dozen All-America teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee used these three prestigious teams to determine a winner:

The Rimington Trophy committee’s policy is to count all players that play primarily the center position for their respective teams as centers, even though they may be listed as guards or tackles on the All-America teams.

The center with the most first-team votes will be determined the winner. If there is a tie with first-team votes, then the center with the most second-team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a majority vote from the Rimington Trophy committee. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Saturday, January 13, 2018.

About the Rimington Trophy

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I FBS College Football. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.9 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $130 million for the fight against cystic fibrosis. Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first team All-American center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the Outland Trophy’s only double winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.

New SEC Storied Documentary “The Rebel” to Premiere on SEC Network May 30

The next installment in ESPN Films’ SEC Storied series, “The Rebel,” will premiere on Tuesday, May 30, at 9 p.m. ET on SEC Network. The film looks at former Ole Miss basketball sensation Johnny Neumann and the decisions he made that shaped his life and career forever.

Johnny Neumann took the Ole Miss nickname seriously. A 6’6″ prodigy from Memphis often compared to LSU superstar Pete Maravich, Neumann led the nation in scoring in 1971 as a sophomore in his only seaon in Oxford.

In the SEC Storied film “The Rebel,” director Paul Carruthers looks back on those days when Neumann electrified the Memphis basketball scene playing for Overton High before moving on to the University of Mississippi. The film also reveals a now older and wiser man who returned to Oxford in 2013 to begin working on the college degree he once spurned. In the years in between, Neumann bounced from team to team and country to country.

The film includes exclusive interviews from Paul Finebaum, Woody Paige, and Hubie Brown. Advance digital screeners are available upon request.
