Turkey's Baykar to open service center for drones in Ukraine
Tumblr media
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry and the Turkish company Baykar signed a contract on July 31 to build a service center for the repair and maintenance of combat drones.
The contract is part of the larger agreement on Turkey-Ukraine cooperation in the field of high technologies, aviation, and space industries, which entered into force on Jan. 23.
“The creation of a service center will be a significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities and will help bring our victory closer,” said State Secretary of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry Kostiantyn Vashchenko.
According to Vashchenko, the center will be built “in the near future."
“Turkey’s assistance to Ukraine during a full-scale war is certainly invaluable. Special thanks to the Baykar company for its contribution to increasing the strength of the Armed Forces in the fight against Russian aggression… This joint project will lay the foundation of our systematic work and create more jobs in Ukraine,” the official added.
Ukrainian government allocates $1 billion for drone production
The Ukrainian government has allocated Hr 40 billion ($1.08 billion) this year to invest in the drone industry, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on July 26.

The agreement on Turkey-Ukraine cooperation in the field of high technologies, aviation, and space industries also allows the construction of a factory in Ukraine to produce Turkish Bayraktar drones.
Minister for Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin said on July 10 that the construction had already started.
According to Baykar’s CEO, Haluk Bayraktar, the production of drones is set to begin in 2025, and the total investment into the project would amount to around $95 million.
The drones produced at the plant will be equipped with Ukrainian-made engines, and the facility will also include a training center for Ukrainian pilots, according to Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov.
Bayraktar is a Turkish strike operational-tactical medium-altitude drone with a long flight duration, which Turkey has been supplying to Ukraine for the past few years.

I finally met Jesus
05/31/23
I worked almost 24 hrs a day. I took a Nap, of course. If I have my time. I have 8 jobs. Different Niches, Different levels of pressure. We just moved to a new house and still need to organize my room. So I decide to use a little space in my parent's room.
My Midnight client used to yell at me ALL THE TIME. I used to finish my work beyond the required hrs. and ended up disappointed and a bit devastated. There's no moment when pressure comes and anxiety triggers me because of my personal problem. I just pray and always say, "Lord, my lord hug me. I'm tired. " Then I cried silently. And I got back to work until the day passed.
Yesterday was different. I feel really emotional. Im broke as I reminisced about my past life, and hearing the news that children are being prone to crime is what makes me feel sad. Plus, the tiring work, and I'm physically not okay. (I think my body is slowly giving up on me" Again, I prayed and said, "Lord, my lord hug me. I'm tired. " Luckily, I could finish my work timely and go to bed. I still pray for all the pain and anxiety that I feel. Until I fall asleep.
As im Sleeping, I dream about the lost girl who is seeking someone to talk to. I talk to her and encourage her to pray. I invite her to our house, and she's happy! As I Assist her to go outside and open the door... I see Jesus standing at our home 5 steps away!!! He's tall, wearing white, short hair, and has good eyes. even though I didn't hear any words from him, I just heard his voice "Can I come in"? / "Pwede bako pumasok? " Im scared, and without hesitation, I opened the door, and I said "Lord, my lord hug me" I felt myself lifting up from the bed and feeling that someone is hugging me so tight. And i slowly open my eyes and wake up my mother to tell her everything.
It was a Miracle and a privilege to see our lord Jesus Christ. I'm scared, having so much goose bump. I'm really not prepared for what is happening, and his coming!! I wonder, What more when he comes? Are we ready? ....
I am broken, being rejected by the people I love the most. But I always go back to worship God to Acknowledge the pain. And Finally, learned to submit everything to him. My faith is being tested every day by reminding me of how people really look down on me and questioning my worth. And my keyword is always to ask God to hug me. AND HE DID. God's love is unconditional. We may sometimes don't know why things have to be set apart or why our plans is not being followed, its because there are conversations that ONLY GOD CAN HEAR IT and when you're in the process of being broken and lost, it's his way to get you back on his arms.
I'm learning every day, i acknowledge the pain and trust God fully. God is real. We don't need to really see God to believe him. What I experience proves that our Lord God hears us and comforts us in many ways. Talk to us in his own ways. Who we are now is already proof that God is moving on our lives.

Theories About the Ways Eric Delano Tried to Quit the Institute:
1. Blackmailing Jonah (James Wright)
2. Locking Jonah in artifact storage (“Mr. Wright, I refuse to let you out until you fire me”)
3. Just straight up laying across Jonah’s desk and refusing to move. Or in the doorway of his office. Basically trying to annoy Jonah into firing him. (Once he stood in the doorway of Jonah’s office and chanted “Fire me” for the whole day. Another time he glued down everything on Jonah’s desk.)
4. Changing his name (“My name isn’t the name on the employment contract anymore so it’s not legally binding to me anymore right?”)
5. Burning all the case files he was working on - if everything he’d been assigned to do was gone, maybe his tie to the Institute would be broken?
6. Destroying all of the security cameras.
7. Telling EVERYONE at the Institute, even outside of the Archives, about the Eye (and encouraging them all to quit). Even if they didn’t believe him, he made it a point to Never. Stop. Talking about it. If only so they ended up quitting because the weird archival assistant wouldn’t leave them alone. (Eric’s reasoning was that maybe if was Seen for what it was , and lost victims in the form of employees leaving, the Eye would let him go to prevent subsequent losses).
8. Covering up all of the windows in the Archives/at home so nobody could see out (or in) and then pulling a Natalie Ennis (unscrewing all the lightbulbs)
9. Writing a letter of resignation. It physically pained him. He did it anyway.
10. Breaking into Jonah’s office to find (and burn) his employment contract.
11. Somehow getting his hands on one of the closed-eye sigil People’s Church necklaces and wearing it every day (so it would hopefully protect him from the Eye’s sight)
12. When the necklace didn’t work, getting a closed-eye tattoo
13. When the tattoo didn’t work, trying to JOIN the People’s Church. They didn’t let him in.
14. Making a paper mache double and not showing up for a week (it ended up Stranger-aligned, and he got sick anyway)
15. Bringing a different one of Mary’s Leitners to work every day for a solid month or so, including but not limited to...
The one that drops animal bones
One that generates worms when you open it
One that shoots spiderwebs at whatever it’s aimed at when you open it
One that never stops playing circus music
16. Releasing a tarantula in the break room (“ok Web do your thing”). Emma found it and ended up keeping it as a pet.
17. Filling Jonah’s office with creepy dolls that may or may not have been Stranger aligned
18. Filling Jonah’s office with Stranger-aligned taxidermied animals from the Trophy Room. Which just succeeded in annoying Jonah and the animals.
19. Invoking the Spiral and just. Lying. At every possible opportunity.
20. Faking his own death...everyone was VERY surprised when he showed up at work a week later.
21. Bringing a HUGE Corruption-aligned ant farm into the Archives after everyone had gone home one night.
22. Filling the break room fridge with raw meat (Emma looked at the fridge, looked at Eric - who was absolutely SOAKED in blood - and went, “Still not fired?”)
23. Every time he was asked to lock up (Jonah really should’ve known better), and saw an avatar of one of the other Entities nearby, just casually announcing, “OH I’M JUST GONNA LEAVE. THE SPARE KEY TO THIS EYE STRONGHOLD. UNDER THIS MAT RIGHT HERE.”
24. Randomly mailing away statements (with the wrong return address on them).
25. Trying to bribe HR to terminate his employment contract
26. Hiring a lawyer to look through a blank copy of the archives employment contract and (hopefully) find some way he can get himself fired.
27. A lot of WEIRD conversations with union reps (“Look, I just want to get fired so I can spend time with my son.”). He’d get the response “I’d LOVE that kind of job security!” at least once during every. Single. One of those conversations.
28. Refusing to accept his paychecks
29. BURNING his paychecks
30. After a conversation with Adelard Dekker, he once tried to fill the archives with cement after hours.
31. After reading a statement about the Buried almost drowning someone, he turned on the sinks in all the bathrooms before he left one night to try and flood the Institute.
32. Shoveling dirt from the courtyard into a wheelbarrow and dumping it in Jonah’s office (“This is now the domain of the Buried. FIRE ME.”)
33. Bringing a clown into the Archives. Like, just a random clown. (“LOOK! I’m Stranger-aligned!” *hugs clown* “I am the Eye’s Arch-enemy!!!”)
34. Stealing all the keys to the Archives after locking up (again, Jonah should really know better) one night. Can’t be a job if no one can get into the building, right?
35. Using stencils and spray paint to cover the walls of the archives (and Jonah’s office) in fractals
36. Paying people to come in and give false statements
37. After finding Barnabas Bennett’s bones in Jonah’s office, he positioned them outside the door to the institute to scare off potential statement givers.
(Thank you to @demasc , @ofdreamsanddoodles , & @cuttlefishkitch for helping me brainstorm for this monster list!)

Ok so in light of the Independent article (see my tag #fusebox layoffs for more info), I’ve been trying to piece together the sequence of events that lead to FB Going to Shit™.
All of the below is based on articles, tweets from the staff, and dates from screenshots. Especially with the Matchmaker stuff, I’m using the dates I personally accessed the stories- that might not be accurate to when they were actually released to an international audience, just when my phone updated the app. In hindsight, I’m not a great person to do this because I have a shit memory and don’t keep receipts, so if you have any corrections PLEASE lmk either in the dms or replies.
In sum, the timeline appears to be:
1. Key players left Fusebox in early 2020.
The one that people are probably most familiar with is David Gallopim, one of the artists who helped define the S2’s distinct style, leaving sometime before March 2020. He seemed to indicate that there was conflict over the new art style of S3, and released assets he’d designed of Harry in his own style (notably way prettier than Harry looks in-game).
But probably more important to the direction of the company, Michael Othen, one of the co-founders and former CEO, left in July of 2020 (I had thought it was earlier in the year but according to LinkedIn it was July). It’s much more unclear why he left, but it’s notable because he was a huge force in making the game inclusive of LGBTQ characters.
So all in all, not a great sign when employees who had a huge hand in creating the content and direction of a game that defined its success jump ship. Especially after the game was seemingly hitting its stride, with the host of Love Island (the TV show) doing a sponsored Let’s Play of S3 and projects in the works like Boat Party and CMM.
2. It seems like Fusebox‘s CEO/executives hired new management, either in 2020 or early 2021. Employees complain that the executives don’t understand what it takes to make a game and are pulling the studio in the wrong direction. It’s unclear if the newly hired execs had experience.
Wil Stephens, the CEO/founder, has been with FB since its inception but also appears to have only founded game distribution ventures and not worked in any development or employment capacity. If that’s the case, maybe the complaints about lack of experience/knowledge about the mechanics of making games work are about him. If not, then some of the newly hired execs would likely be to blame.
Paul Virapen, COO, was brought on in November of 2020. He’s worked with Disney’s gaming division, Big Pixel studios, Wooga. The quality of that experience is dubious since he headed up the ‘let’s make apps for Apple watches, it’ll be the next big thing’ department… Lol. Notably also, all of his roles had been in the executive/managerial realm, not the development teams, so the complains might have been about him. THIS IS SPECULATION, but I’m willing to bet that Virapen was a if not THE driving force in switching Fusebox’s focus entirely to matchmaker. All the studios he’s worked with have primarily produced and promoted Match 3 games, and he has a background working with big studios that produce games for large international audiences, not small studios making narrative games for limited audiences.
A new Manager of Finances, Ruth Erskine, was brought on in December of 2020
Rob Goddard, a new producer, was brought in January of 2021
Several key operations positions were filled by existing employees being promoted to management- 2 as far as I can tell. But as a whole it seems like December 2020 was a huge shift in leadership for the upper management while a lot of the other teams expanded but kept their old players as well.
3. At some point in late 2020- mid 2021, the executive team made the decision to switch LITG’s focus from a narrative pass-based game to a Match 3 incorporating romance narrative cut scenes. In early 2021, Fusebox teased more content to come while releasing S3 (seemingly referring to Matchmaker and not S4). In the interim between S3 endings and Boat Party’s release they put out an interview confirming the new game will be Match 3 but did seem to indicate that the plan at that time was for Matchmaker to be a side project with a different development team and not replace the main game. Notably, the LITG writers and artists were reassured that their roles will continue to exist (according to the independent article) as they’re working on S4.
3. In September of 2020, Matchmaker became briefly available in the US. That’s when I first downloaded it, at least. It would be added/removed from the google play store multiple times before having a unilateral release in July of 2021.
Throughout 2020, Matchmaker is available to Asian audiences solely with LITG S1 getting rolled out in incremental updates.
Eventually, Beanie Quinn is released (March 2021)
LA Noir is released (May 2021)
Seduction Games is released (late May or June 2021- I got the update and played it June 3rd, but hadn’t opened the app for a month or so. It might have come out before then, which is unfortunate for this timeline since it’s so inextricably linked to the open letter and layoff dates)
LITG S2 is released (only like 20 levels of it) the same month- June 19th for me. Notably, all of these stories are only released to an international audience, with the UK and USA still not having access to the app.
4. At the same time, Fusebox’s internal affairs are pretty quiet from 2020-2021, at least on social media.
S3 comes out in 2020, Boat Party comes out later in the year and finishes in 2021. Post S3 in October of 2021, a survey goes out gauging player interest in new art styles and representation, which was pretty in keeping with past actions and seemed promising for S4.
Boat Party features a promising cross promotion implementing irl brands into the game. It’s unclear if enough money was made from this on FB or the sponsor’s end to make that strategy viable, but that might’ve impacted management’s outlook for the profitability of LITG.
Fusebox teases more content for the summer on Instagram, and then follows up and confirms it’ll be a proper season.
5. More key players leave in early 2021
Ed Sibley is still listed as Narrative Direction on LinkedIn, but he’s not credited as a writer on Season 4 (he was on 3,2,and 1) and started work with NetSpeak games in May of 2021, so we can assume he left around then or at least transitioned away from Fusebox then.
Fred Francis, another writer who had been on the team since S1, turns in his resignation ‘weeks’ before the layoffs were announced in late June. So we can assume he made his exit sometime early June or late May.
6. Prior to the release of Seduction games in May/June, staff expressed concern about the biphobia in Seduction Games. No sources have given a specific time when this took place. They were reassured that the problem would be corrected prior to release, but then the story was released as is to an international audience in June. The article released by the Independent is unclear- there might have been discussion prior to the open letter where staff expressed concerns and then were reassured before the game going live. OR the open letter might have been the first expression of concern by the staff. I tend to think the former, and the open letter was a response to Matchmaker going live with Seduction Games anyways, but I have no proof for that. On May 24th, 31 employees sent an open letter of concern regarding the problematic content in Matchmaker. This letter isn’t public, so we don’t know the scope of the employees' concerns or who the employees were.
7. To resolve the situation, a meeting between the staff and at least the COO (likely more than just him though) was held sometime after May 24th. Allegedly, Virapen was disrespectful to the employees who had questions, refused to answer, and ended the meeting early before any resolution was had by closing his laptop and leaving the room. At least 4 HR complaints were made in the wake of that meeting, we do not know the nature of those complaints.
8. Some time mid-July (maybe July 26th? A writer tweeted about their job ending soon on that date), employees were made aware that the LITG app would move into ‘sunset mode’. It’s unclear what was communicated, but it seems as though S4 will be heavily delayed or cancelled altogether and no future seasons would be made. Writers begin to post about looking for work on Twitter
9. June 30th- The majority of Fusebox writing staff announce on twitter they’re out of work. In addition to the entire writing staff, unity engineers and producers are also let go.
10. July 5th - Fusebox executives respond to an article by MCVUK with a statement asserting they were “consulting with [their] employees on a proposed change to its business model” that would focus on producing Matchmaker content. They also expounded that the move was to secure “cash injections and and continued support from respected investors across the media and gaming industry”
11. July 6th- Fusebox announces that S4 will be delayed from the summer release date and that there is no fixed release date.
12. August 2nd- three jobs are posted to Fusebox’s careers page on their website, one being Head of Narrative Content. In the job listing, it specifies that they’ll be maintaining existing properties as well as new ones, and that because of the co-development model (re:fusebox outsourcing Matchmaker to another studio) the new Narrative Lead must collaborate with external content creators.
Hopefully posting this timeline gives players a better understanding of how radically Fusebox has changed in the course of 2021 (and how royally they screwed over the people who made LITG what it is). Again, please let me know if you have receipts showing dates are different or things to add.

I called my grandma while i was on the hill today watching the sunset. We chit chatted for a while and then she brought up grandpa - and i'll always be honored that im one of the few she can talk to about this stuff - she doesn't like to discuss serious things but after going through grandpa's whole hospitalization and deterioration and the aftermath together mostly just her and i, i think she feels like she can be open with me.
I also havent changed my book of face photos since 2018 (my grandpa died dec 31 2017), i rarely go on the site anymore i set up insta so that it auto posts the main things, but yeah i cant bring myself to make my profile photo not grandpa and i when we 'snuck' the 63 mustang out of the garage and went on a cruise to mt rainier (Grandma definitely knew lol)(lucky for us we didnt have any issues or break down or run out of gas bc i dont know if she would have come rescued us haha). The 'cover photo' i put up to go along with this is a photo of them that started out as a joke - grandma is terrified of flying but grandpa's passion has always been flying/space. And its a photo of the two of them walking through a 70's era plane holding hands with the joke being that the only way we can get grandma on a plane is when it's parked in a museum.
Grandma told me tonight when she goes to the grocery store or out walking with my aunt, and she sees older couples who are just sort of existing near each other or walking at different speeds or whatever...that she remembers how she and grandpa would always hold hands. How grandpa would always come find her in a room if they were seperated for longer than an hr. Just that connection - really truly a couple. They never did anything without each other. And they actually enjoyed it. Grandma once told me that everything even the little day to day things were always exciting with grandpa, and that lasted for over 60 yrs of marriage.
Its a small miracle that grandma has lived this long without grandpa, i still feel like im waiting for the other shoe to drop. She seems happy, but there is something missing. I mailed her a bunch of photos i printed for her of them and the house and things - i was always taking photos of them and they would laugh at me because they didnt like having their photo taken at the time. And initially i sent printed photos to my aunt, hoping she would tell me which ones were the best and if grandma would like any. And of course grandma was visiting when my aunt got them, so i was immediately ratted out and grandma requested the photos for herself too.
There was one photo of grandpa and grandma on a 'christmas boat' in lake union - which was one of THE most magical christmas's i've ever had - just me, grandma, grandpa, my aunt and her family. And we had a heck of a time convincing grandma the boat was safe, but she relented and she enjoyed it because she got to sit inside and listen to a live choir. And that was where i took the photo, just them sitting in the very middle of this medium sized boat so grandma couldn't see out the windows, and grandpa was smiling. And grandma says this photo is now her favorite because there are so few photos of him smiling, and she apparently keeps the print framed by her bed and tells him good morning/goodnight every day.
The boat was actually one of the times i got the feeling that grandpa understood that his son was kind of falling down on the dad job - there were a lot of things grandpa stepped in for: he taught me how to drive, he was the one who came to my high school graduation, he was the one who heard all about my first career woes when i lost my job. My dad did a lot too, obviously, but grandpa understood how lonely i was during that time, how much work my dad and brother could be. Though i dont think it was till the year he died, when i spent more time with him living in their house, that grandpa realized my ambition and drive was equal to his own when he was my age.
I miss grandpa, both in that big abstract grief way. But also in the day to day silly way where i just miss being able to make him and grandma laugh - whether through my stories and antics while i was living with them for that year. Or before that largely through the photos and posts i would make for them to read (i lived in pittsburgh for 10 yrs, they were in seattle so i only saw them twice a year during my vacation days). (my grandma's current request is that i 'explain' my photos more nowadays, apparently lately my posts have been too vague and mysterious. She was REALLY confused about the cairn city dinosaurs and the photo i took of buster keaton's lamp)
The ghost feeling i got after grandpa's death is starting to lift. I still feel a little seperate from actual existence, and the pandemic certainly pushed me back into that unexpectedly, but i think despite the setback getting more of a 'normal' life will be easier this year. Yesterday was actually a good start - i met a bunch of people i dont think i was a complete social reject it was the first time ive done anything on the anniversary of grandpa's death and i only had a few moments during the night where i was worried i'd break down in tears. Overall decent.
One of the weirdest things, considering how quiet and simple my grandparents preferred life, is to think how even with grandpa gone. There is still a part of him - the biggest part of his intellect really - that will go on, maybe forever. And that's the lunar rover still out there on the moon. Only one part of his space contribution but a part that is physical and enduring.

I finally left that toxic workplace after telling HR everything, and I will never make friends on the job again. Plus I was the youngest there (21) and working in corporate people would throw that in my face daily that I don’t know shit and that I’m a “baby”. Even though I’ve been one of the top sales persons I’m starting a new job soon and work is just strictly work. They knew way to much about me anyways and my black boss she is 31. She kept telling me to have kids before I was 25, because when she was 21 she already had 2 kids herself. It was SO messy and people (women) kept asking why I was a virgin. My old co workers keeps asking to hang out and everyday they text me asking if I found another job. Any tips on how to avoid having this happen again on the next job and should I cut them off?
If you don't trust your old coworkers, I wouldn't advise keeping in touch unless you see a business opportunity there. Moving forward, be professional but polite. You can disclose the bare minimum to where they think they know enough about you but they actually don't. Keep things surface level and with little detail. When it comes to your goals and growth though, keep communication very open with your manager and be as detailed with your accomplishments as possible. Good luck in your new job girlie!

long story short (it was a bad time)
Prompt: 31. “I never would’ve thought that (he/she/they)’d get with someone else.” from this prompt list! Pairing: no current ones, but there are serious mentions of former!hotchniss Word Count: 4,410 (?????) Warnings: it’s angsty, and there’s some mentions of alcohol. there’s also mentions of the mr. scratch events  A/n: no, we are not going to talk about how late this is. nope. (i’m so sorry. catching up now, hopefully!) wrote this, realized that it’s very akin to seattle by @hurricanejjareau, which if you haven’t read, do it!
          Des Moines, Iowa- October, 2017
Shutting his phone with far more force than necessary, he stared down at the small object. He flipped it in his palm and scowled at it with dismay. It was a chance of a lifetime, and it was all he had thought about for the past three years. There wasn’t a world in which he would refuse the offer, yet, for just the slightest of moments, he hesitated. But just as quickly as it came, it left, and he made his decision.
Aaron Hotchner was returning to the BAU.
The death of a valued team member left a door open, and Hotch already had a foot in. Cruz called him and offered him a deal he knew the former agent wouldn’t refuse. All the pieces were falling into place, all the stars were aligning, all the signs were being shown. There was no way he’d be able to refute everything the world was telling him. And he definitely didn’t try very hard.
Cruz said that Mr. Scratch had been terrorising the team practically since he left. Someone that cunning was not able to let go of something they felt so interesting. He had placed Reid, an agent who had already seen far too much for his short life, in a maximum security prison, framing him and terrorising him with memories that were just out of his reach.
Hotch was told about what happened in the car, how they were ambushed, how Prentiss was abducted, and how SSA Walker was killed. He was told how traumatized the team was. But he was also told how much relief finally catching Lewis gave them. For the first time in a very long time, the team felt somewhat safe
And the spot left open by the death of Stephen Walker- Cruz knew that Hotch was itching to come back. Hotch may have only worked under him for two years, but they knew each other very well. Cruz knew how much being away from this job, this team, this life had been destroying Aaron, even if he wasn’t told so.
“Hey, buddy.” It was an old habit of his, crouching down to talk to his son and calling him ‘buddy.’ Jack had probably come to associate the pet name with bad news, because the only time his father ever called him that was when he had difficult facts to present. Jack wasn’t a little kid anymore; he was twelve, and he was far too smart to not see that his dad was undergoing some turmoil.
But the good thing with Jack was that he was also smart enough to act like nothing was wrong, to just go with the flow. He had gone through a lot of changes in his life, and would definitely be going through more in the future, but he was used to it by now and was okay to move with his dad at a moment’s notice.
“What’s up, Dad?” he asked, looking up from a math book with attentive eyes.
Hotch stood up and moved into the seat across the table from him. He spoke very slowly, “How would you feel about moving back to Virginia?”
“That’d be cool!” he enthused, nodding his head but his eyebrows were knit with confusion. “Why? Are you going back to the FBI?”
Hotch pursed his lips in thought. His fingers drummed subconsciously on the wood top. “I… think so, yeah. But-” he interrupted himself, holding his hand in the air, “only if you are okay with it. I don’t want to cause you anymore pain by moving you. Again.”
The younger Hotchner shook his now long hair clad head. “I miss Virginia! And we can visit Mom without having to fly!”
“Yeah,” came Hotch’s much quieter, less enthusiastic reply. “We can visit Mom.”
Jack turned back to his algebra with a smile on his face and a bouncing knee, his mouth moving rapidly to describe to his silent father how excited he was to go back and see his friends, and see Uncle Dave, and go back to that school, and have Dad catch the bad guys, and see Aunt Jess.
Hotch was just quiet, basking silently in his son’s excitement. He only hoped that the team, but one specific person, really, would be so excited for the return of Agent Hotchner.
     Quantico, Virginia- the same day
Prentiss was silent, and it wasn’t lost on her coworkers. They had taken to routinely dropping by her door, asking her if she wanted anything, and always hearing a false cheery no. Additionally, it wasn’t lost on her that they were grouping in the bullpen, shooting furtive looks her way, talking in hushed voices, and jolting back to their files whenever she looked down at them.
The call from Cruz had just come in about a new team member.
To say that she and Hotch had a… complicated history would be a serious understatement. Years ago, Emily wanted to leave. She wanted to get out of this job and this life because she couldn’t see herself getting back into what used to be. The failure with her house really just cemented that for her.
Hotch changed that.
The “date” they had arranged had actually turned into a date. It was easy to think back with a fond smile at the memory of Hotch with a cream mustache, clueless and smiling for once in his life. She had sat in that chair at the coffee shop and thought, ‘why would I ever want to leave this?’
After that, it was easy for her buried feelings to surface in an explosion of . It was easy for her to sit on his sofa and fall in love with him as he cared for his child with a gentleness she had never seen anywhere else. And she’d like to think the same went for him.
The HR battles about their relationship were difficult, but in Aaron’s words as they sat outside of the office waiting for a final verdict, “it was nothing we can’t handle. I love you, and there’s no way that Strauss- or anyone for that matter- will be able to take that away from us.”
And it was easy to believe that, too. Three years they loved each other, days spent fighting the horrors of the world, nights spent comforting each other and falling deeper into the trance that was the other.
Emily being herself, she’d known it was too good to be true. There was always a tiny voice in the back of her head whispering, “You don’t deserve him. He’s just going to leave you. This isn’t real.”
She should have listened.
Mr. Scratch changed that. In the moments after Hotch was rescued from Lewis, she’d known it was over. The blank look he shot her, the way his hands shook, the flinch away from her when she laid a caring hand on his back. Just everything.
And she was right. Hotch, a spot of darkness on the otherwise pristine and bright hospital bed, was the last she’d seen him. He checked himself out, picked Jack up from Jess’ house, packed a bag, and left.
The only note he left wasn’t to her or even Rossi. No. It was to Garcia, a warning to not go looking for him- that he knew how to disappear from even her, but that would only make it harder on Jack. It was a plea to let him leave his life behind, the very thing he had convinced Prentiss to not do three years prior.
Emily dragged herself from her thoughts by staring at the framed photos she kept on her desk. Herself, Penelope, and JJ smiling at a bar after a solved case. Reid’s arms looped around her and a carefree smile on his face for once. Rossi kissing her cheek. Layton and her, locking lips under a sprig of mistletoe held out by Alvez.
And a photo of Hotch reaching his hand out towards her, an expression of love on his face.
It wasn’t good for her healing process, she’d been told that enough times in the bureau-mandated therapy sessions, to act like Hotch and their relationship never existed. So, she kept a singular photo up, a small reminder to the happiest she’d ever been.
    Quantico, Virginia- November, 2017
Feelings of nostalgia rushed through him as he stepped out of the cold into the building, just as a tidal wave of hesitation crashed into him. Was this the right thing to do?
He could have stood in the doorway forever, but a call from a security member stirred him from his stupor. Too late to go back now. He could only hope that arriving a week before they expected him would catch them off-guard, enough to let him talk before completely shutting him down.
Cruz met him in the lobby with a welcoming smile. “Hey, Hotch.” He reached out for a hug, which he stiffly received. Mateo had always been a hugger, and three years away hadn’t changed that.
They pulled apart, and Hotch looked towards the elevator apprehensively. “They’re here?” he asked, turning back to Cruz, who nodded.
“Prentiss has only told some of them. We weren’t expecting you for another week, and she figured that it’d be best to wait until Monday to tell them.”
Hotch’s heart leapt into his throat at the mention of Emily, and his voice quivered a bit as he asked, “So, who knows?”
“Rossi. Garcia, who, as you know, will find anything out. JJ and Luke, I believe. Luke Alvez,” he clarified at Hotch’s cocked eyebrow. “He came in last year from the Fugitive Task Force after Agent Morgan resigned.”
Hotch almost choked on the coffee he had lifted to his mouth to drink. “When did Morgan leave?”
Cruz ushered him towards the elevators and pushed the button while explaining simply, “You’ve missed a lot, Aaron.”
It was salt in an already burning wound
“There’s also a new doctor in town, a Dr. Tara Lewis. She joined when Agent Callahan left. I think you’ll like her.” Cruz paused as they entered, thinking about the team. “Oh! And Matt Simmons.”
“From IRT?”
“Mhm. They disbanded, and he’s with us now. I think that’s it.”
Aaron was quiet, the news of how the team had changed settling on him. He fidgeted his feet and turned towards Cruz. “You aren’t a profiler, but give me your best thoughts. How does it look for my reception?”
The section chief was silent, turning away from him and towards the closed doors. He stared at the rising numbers and said, “Not good.”
A sharp “ding” sounded as the elevator stopped and the doors slid open. Hotch was very proud to say he only hesitated slightly in stepping out the silver doors and towards the glass walls of the bullpen.
He stopped at the door, where Cruz waved him goodbye, to stare at the team at their desks. JJ was perched on Reid’s desk, and a man he didn’t recognize was spinning in his chair while Spencer watched with a thinly veiled smile. A pretty black woman was pouring over a file splayed on the desk of Matt Simmons.
“Hotch?” a chirpy voice from behind him asked.
At the sound of his name, Aaron spun on his heel, suit jacket flying, and met the watering eyes of Penelope Garcia. She looked the same, but her smile lines were etched a little deeper. Her hand moved to cover them as she took in Hotch standing in front of her, shocked.
“I-I didn’t think you were going to be here for another week! You should have warned me!” she rushed towards him with outstretched arms, dropping the papers she had been carrying. “I wanted to make you a cake! And get Jack a present!”
She pulled away, placing her hands on both sides of his face and scanned his eyes. Bewildered, he looked back at her. A man slid past them into the office, balancing three cups of coffee in his hands.
“Just making sure you are real,” she said and stepped back onto the array of papers scattered across the glossy floor.
“Hi, Garcia,” he laughed, breathily, finally able to get a word in from her rambling.
“Hi!”
The time didn’t seem to diminish their relationship, but intuition told him that he wouldn’t be this well received by everyone else. You don’t just drop off the face of the planet and expect everything to be okay when you come back. It didn’t work for Prentiss, and Prentiss had a reason. What reason was he going to give?
“Come on, come on!” Penelope urged, pushing on his back, forgetting the papers she dropped. “The team is going to be so surprised! They don’t even know you’re the new team member!”
Weaving their fingers together, she tugged him through the glass doors, waving her other arm to get the attention of the others. Emily and Rossi had come down from their offices at this point, Prentiss taking a coffee from the man and planting a kiss on his cheek. Rossi made a show of doing the same, but still accepted his drink with a grateful smile.
Hotch would have frozen in his place, but the enigma that was Penelope continued to pull him towards the others. All the returning profiler could do was stare at the pair and their clasped hands.
Eight pairs of eyes turned to them as Garcia called, “Guys! Look who it is!”
Hotch didn’t have a lot of expectations for his reception, but a complete stillness somehow fell short of all of them. Penelope was similarly disappointed by the reaction and dragged him closer to the desks.
“Oh, come on,” she sighed as they made it to stand in front of them. She placed her hands on her hips and surveyed them with the air of a mother telling her children to hug an aunt they didn’t like. “It’s Hotch, people!”
With a wide grin and a teasing look to Garcia, the man Hotch didn’t recognize came over to them first, offering a hand out. Hotch tried to focus on him and not the open-mouthed faces of his former friends. Better to ignore it than confront it.
“Luke Alvez,” the man introduced brightly.
Hotch nodded in understanding. “You came from the Marshals?” At the nod he received, he forced a smile. “How’d we pin you down to the BAU?”
Luke gave a good-natured shrug. “Don’t ask me,” he laughed.
A slender hand was presented to him next. “Tara Lewis.”
“Doctor,” Hotch nodded and chuckled slightly at the shocked look she gave him. “Cruz told me.”
Matt was next to greet him, waving from his spot at his desk. “Hey, Aaron.”
“Matt. How are the kids?”
“More of a handful everyday,” Simmons smiled lightly. “How is yours?”
Hotch shrugged. “He’s old.” “Right? Where did the years go?”
As the conversation fizzled out, a feeling of stiffness floated into the room. Hotch could have cut the tension with a knife, and he was forced to look at the faces of the people he had been purposely looking away from.
Reid was far less clean cut than he had been when Aaron left. His face was no longer clean shaven, and he had grown his hair out. Somehow, his eyes expressed even more pain and exhaustion than three years prior. All those years ago, Hotch would have been able to read his emotions to a tee but with the new appearance and experiences, Reid’s thoughts were completely lost on Hotch.
JJ and Rossi were sporting similar smiles. JJ’s was melancholic, reflecting the history they used to have, and Rossi’s was understanding, somehow expressing that he understood Hotch’s need to leave. But JJ’s arms were crossed and her expression was guarded- she didn’t trust him anymore.
None of them did.
Prentiss’ face was wiped of emotion. Her grip on the man next to her had tightened, knuckles whitened. A stark contrast to Garcia, Emily’s frown lines had been etched deeper into her face and smile lines faded. Her eyes held none of the love that Hotch used to mirror, none of the joy that used to spark happiness in himself.
The man she was clutching onto didn’t seem to notice the tension that had filled the air, and offered a cheery smile to Hotch as he held out his hand. “Layton Gregory, Counter-intelligence.”
“Hello.” It was a stiff greeting but it was all that Hotch could spit out as he stared at his and Emily’s intertwined hands.
Gregory didn’t seem to care. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“All good things?”
“Nothing too bad,” the other man shrugged, and looked towards Emily with a frown. He didn’t seem to know that there was history, which Hotch took a mental note of. “Bye, babe. I’ve got to go, I just figured you’d want your afternoon coffee. Glad I could meet you,” he nodded to Aaron.
Pressing his lips onto Emily’s forehead, Layton waved to the team and Hotch, who, bar the returning member, waved back.
Rossi raised his cup at the agent’s retreating back. “I owe you the next one!”
Layton waved it off over his shoulder, and the door shut behind him softly. The attention was directed back to Hotch. Curious eyes took in his appearance, but spiteful ones turned away and back to their work.
Alvez handed a stack of manila files to Hotch, but stepped closer to whisper, “Prentiss isn’t too happy. I don’t know if there’s history here, but I think it’d be best to just let her simmer right now.” He stepped away and at regular volume told him, “Just a bunch of consulting right now. With you here, it should take less time- hopefully, at least.”
Hotch nodded, smiling grimly at the advice, and took the folders. He turned towards his former flame, willing explanations to give her into existence. Unsurprisingly, none came.
Giving him a quick up-and-down glance, Emily turned away from him without a word. If Hotch was paying attention-- which he was-- he would have seen her turn back and swipe quickly at her cheeks before turning back around. The door that shut behind her wasn’t as quiet as her boyfriend’s.
JJ slowly drew her eyesight from Emily’s shut door back to Hotch. “It’s nice to have you back, Hotch.” Her voice didn’t exactly convey the same message, but she did reach out and rub his arm gently. “Emily’s had a tough time since you left. It wasn’t… easy for her, to say the least.”
“It wasn’t easy for me, either,” came Hotch’s weak explanation.
“Yeah, you don’t get that option!” she snapped, anger she had been harboring since he left rising to the surface. “You left, not us! If it was hard,” she did air quotes with her fingers, “you shouldn’t have done it! Why did you leave?”
He couldn’t answer her.
“Yeah.” JJ turned away and back to the paper she had crushed. She sounded vindictive, for what, Hotch was unaware. He assumed she was probably angry for the pain he had caused her and Emily and the team as a whole.
“Hey, Reid,” Hotch greeted softly as he crossed to the other side of the room, standing next to Rossi, who placed a kind hand across his shoulders.
The young man didn’t verbally acknowledge him, rather he just nodded. His eyes never shifted from the report in front of him. That was the best Hotch was going to get and he knew it.
Rossi moved him towards the stairs, mentioning something about a drink to catch up. His words were barely heard over the rush of blood in Hotch’s head. He could barely believe that these were the same people he had worked with for so many years. They just seemed like… shells of their former selves- placeholders put here to replace them.
As they passed the windows to the office of the Unit Chief, Hotch couldn’t help but glance in on his former safe haven. Emily was stooped over her desk, rapping a framed photo with one of her knuckles, words he couldn’t hear spilling from her mouth.
He’d forgotten how beautiful she was. Of course, he took pictures and vivid memories of her filled his head at all times, but nothing compared to her in person. Raven hair fell into her face and she pushed it behind her ear with a delicate finger, only for it to fall back. Hotch remembered countless times where he had done the same thing for her, brushing a gentle hand against her face to push her hair back.
But that was gone now, and there was no way that he would be given that opportunity again.
Rossi set a bottle of sloshing liquid on his desk between them and slid a glass to him. “Drink. You’ll need it.”
“It’s,” he glanced at his watch, “only three.”
He was answered with a cocked eyebrow. “Are you really trying to tell me that you don’t want some?”
His glass was filled, but it remained untouched on the desk.
“How are you?” Rossi asked, leaning back into his chair.
Hotch straightened his back. “I’m okay. I didn’t think I’d ever actually see this place again.”
“I didn’t think I’d see you.”
“Touché.”
The room hadn’t changed much in the years since Hotch had seen it. It still reeked of Rossi, but it was just a little more hectic than it used to be. Papers were crammed into the bookshelves, no clear organization. The tv and game console set were new, something Hotch recognized from an ad Jack had shown him in an attempt for a birthday present.
Rossi hesitated before asking his question, the bond of complete transparency diminished in the years. “Do you… can you talk about it?”
There wasn’t an immediate response. The drink was swirled in the glass, but Hotch still didn’t take a drink.
“I had to leave. Uh, after Scratch got me, he put me under those drugs. I guess he was trying to see what I would do, I don’t know. Everything I’ve ever loved was ripped away from me in these… visions, I guess they could be called. You guys, Jack, Emily.” He pursed his lips. “I had to leave. I couldn’t let that happen.”
Rossi rested his chin on his outstretched index fingers. “Emily.”
“Emily.”
They sat in companionable silence, although they could barely be considered that anymore. Rossi nursed his drink, and Hotch did not, electing to stare out the window into the bullpen and watch the team work.
“What happened?” he asked.
Rossi shook his head. “What didn’t happen is the better question. They’ve gone through a lot in the past few years, and so have you. It’s just going to be like walking on eggshells for a while. You’ll never know when any of them reach their breaking point.”
Prentiss had left the recluse of her office and returned to the bullpen. She and Tara were talking over a case file Tara had splayed in her hands. Aaron couldn’t tear his eyes off of her.
“Aaron?”
“I never would have thought she’d get with someone else,” he answered softly to a question that was never asked. He still didn’t look away.
“Okay.” The sharpness of Dave’s voice shocked Hotch enough to make him turn back. “Do you really think you are the end all, be all? What, did you think everything would stay the same for three years? You left, Aaron! She moved on! We all did! We didn’t know if you were ever going to return so we had to live as such!”
It was quiet enough in the office after Rossi’s outburst that Hotch could hear his own blinking. “I know.”
“Then act like it!” JJ clearly wasn’t the only one with pent up anger, but Rossi’s was a softer anger. There was no malice behind his words. “I understand why you left, we all have that moment where every fiber of our being is telling us to leave, to pack up and change our name and move to Buenos Aires.”
Hotch squinted at the ranting man. “The Buenos Aires part might just be you, Dave.”
“Maybe so. The thing is, Hotch, that Emily could barely stand when you disappeared. She was so weak with stress that her body literally shut down for a little bit. And we couldn’t help her. She was destroyed when you left.”
There weren’t enough words to describe the pain that Hotch felt at Rossi’s story. The thought of his Emily-- no, she wasn’t his anymore, he made sure of that-- suffering that much because of something he did was unbearable.
“But Emily is a fighter. She got better, she moved on. She took over as Unit Chief, she moved into that office, and she took charge, almost like she was made for it. Do you want to know how long it took Garcia to convince her to go out to a club?”
Hotch shook his head.
“I don’t know because it still hasn’t happened. That fun Emily we all knew died when you left. She doesn’t go out to party or club like she used to. All she does is work, eat, and maybe sleep.” Rossi shot a look out the window. “I mean, for God’s sake, she’s dating someone from work, she didn’t even go out and meet a normal person!”
“What can I do?” Hotch’s voice was rough.
A shrug was his reply. “I don’t know. We’re all a little like that. She just took it the hardest because she loved you the most. If you had popped the question, she would have married you back then. Can you imagine that? Emily Prentiss, married?”
A million tiny images of what life could have been flew through Hotch’s mind of Emily in a flowing white dress walking towards him. He could imagine that, very easily.
The class clanged as Rossi set it down. “I think you just have to remember that we aren’t the same people anymore. That’s,” he pointed out the window, “not the same Emily. And I don’t think you’ll be getting that one back. I never could.”
Hotch sunk deeper into his chair and followed Rossi’s finger to below them. Prentiss was smiling, but it wasn’t at him like it used to be. And he didn’t think it would be for a very long time.

Holy Fuck
Okay, so.
First day of school was today, and I got this sweet 4 day job, which is rare to get on the first week of school.
And four days is a long time, plus I didn’t know if I’d need to be handing out stuff in homeroom and whatnot, so I wanted to get there early so that I could get a handle on all the stuff I’d need to do.
So I arrived a little before 7:50. I figure 40 minutes before the day starts will be plenty of time.
And then the first minor little bitty hiccup happened.
I signed in and everything and was ready to go, except they didn’t know what classroom I should go to for the agriculture classes.
Mr. K, the teacher, is not on their list of classrooms.
Another sub tells me that he used to be down X hall and I’m like, okay, but the receptionist tells me to find an administrator and that one is near the gym, which is on the far left of the school, maybe a 2 min walk from the office.
Now, I wanna point out that I haven’t been to this school in like 3 years, only subbed there a few times before, and it’s a fucking maze. There’s an upstairs and I’ve been up there, but I could not tell you how to get there. There’s like 9 different long ass halls all this stuff. Now, there’s only 1500 students , which is about the same as the other school I sub for a lot, but this school is so much bigger.
So anyway, I’m heading left toward the gym, occasionally stopping adults with badges to ask if they’re an administrator.
I nearly get to the gym and a teacher tells me that Mr. K’s room is way at the back of the building. To go all the way back and then it will be a separate building.
I’m like, okay.
So I turn and start to head back to the office and someone else I’d stopped directs me to an administrator, so I ask them again for good measure and he says the same thing.
Go all the way to the end of the building. Then keep going.
So I go all the way to the end of the building, but it leads to a classroom and I know I’m going somewhere outside.
So I find a door leading out and I keep going.
Except all I see are tennis courts and baseball fields and whatnot.
And then I hear a voice, “You’re lost.”
I don’t even fight it. I explain where I’m trying to go, and she tells me to go to the end of the building.
Not the back end.
The right end.
So I go down the hall to the right and I go and I go and I go.
Finally, I come out of the building and there are 2 huts.
Beyond, I can see greehouses and another building, but it looks like that building is behind locked gates.
So I head out into the field and sure enough, the gate is locked.
But there is definitely a building out there.
So I follow the fence.
The next gate is locked as well, but the third one is open into the parking lot. I remember being told to go past one of those, so I go out.
There’s another gate, but I can move the chain over to get in. So I go up to the building and I can see that there’s definitely a classroom in there.
And the door is locked.
I am, most certainly, at the furthest point in the school from the front office.
And I’m already sweaty because it’s muggy and gross outside.
So rather than walk back, I call the school and try to get the custodian. No luck. I call again and try the front office. No luck.
By the way, this whole time I’ve been carrying my supplies bag with me that weighs 12 lbs.
So I shoulder my bag and head back into the building.
But first, I stop at the first hut, thinking maybe I can use their phone to call or...something.
No one answers and the door is locked.
So I go back to the school building.
And the door is locked.
I’m already tired, so instead of walking around the whole school to get to the front office, I lean on the door and peer in like a scrub and it works! A student comes and lets me in.
And then I see a teacher and I’m like, “fucking finally.”
So he offers to see if his key works for the room and we head out and he sees that the gates are locked and I tell him how I got over there and he’s like, “let’s call the front office.”
So we head back in and the ROTC captain is there and he calls the front office.
It’s like 8:20 by now and I’m told not to worry because Mr. K doesn’t have a homeroom so I probably have at least half an hour to get this sorted out.
The ROTC captain tells me that the office should have given me a key to the room. I explain they didn’t because they didn’t know where I was going.
He tells me to go back to the front office.
So back I go.
And they give me a key.
And back I go.
As I’m approaching the way out to the huts, the teacher that helped me sees me and says, “I just saw Mr. K. He thought I was joking when I said I saw his sub.”
Well.
After walking all the way back there I’m sure as hell not gonna take his word for it. So I decide to go talk to the teacher if nothing else. Maybe he’ll want to take the day off because I’m already here.
So I go out, but the gate I used before is now locked because it’s now after 8:30.
So I go back into the building and find a way outside.
And I get to the other building and it’s still locked. But now I have a key.
So I open it up, but there’s no teacher. Or lesson plans or rosters or anything.
So I go to check around the greenhouses and find the teacher finally and I’m so relieved and my hip is starting to hurt and my shoulder hurts and I’m sweaty and gross.
Well.
His wife was supposed to have a baby last week, which is why he’d put in for the time off. Except she hasn’t had it yet, and something got confused with HR and they put in for his leave too soon.
He tells me that they’re gonna pay me for a half day since I did come in and that I need to go see Mr. F in the office about it, after asking if I would come in and cover when he does go on leave.
So I go back to the front office.
And Mr. F explains to me that they’re gonna give me a half day and that he would like me to shadow Mr. K to see how he runs his class and whatnot.
._________________.
So I go BACK to Mr. K’s room, the furthest point in the school from the office.
And I shadow.
And I leave at 11:31 because he has planning and there’s nothing he needs help with doing.
And I call to see if I can get a ride because I still haven’t gotten a license.
And my mom’s at the gym and my dad is waiting for the renovation team to come finish the bathroom.
Now it’s too far to walk home, but I figure I can walk to McDonald’s. It’s just down the road I’m on and take a left.
So I pull out pokemon go.
And I’ve walked 4.9 km since I last opened it when I was in the car on the way to the school. I probably got a few points of a km on the way in, but not much, maybe .4-.6.
In the very least, though, I walked 3.5 km.
In that school.
That’s 2 miles.
In that school.
Trying to find where to go and then get the keys and then go shadow and then finally leave.
And no one can come pick me up.
So I start heading toward McDonalds.
And as I go I realize that this road is a LOT longer than I ever paid attention to.
2 miles later, I realized I wasn’t gonna make it to McDonalds and instead settled for Taco Bell, where I sat for an hour until someone could come get me.
So that was my first day of school.
4 miles.
4 miles while carrying a 12 lb bag the WHOLE time.
My left hip was starting to go numb near the end, which was a nice change from the pain. My feet hurt, my knees hurt, my hips and shoulders and back hurt. My bra gave me heat rash or whatever the equivalent is. I had a few minutes where I thought I was gonna have to just stop and sit on the side of the road like a weirdo because it was too fucking hot.
I am an idiot.
But at least I made $45. And will likely be going back to work there on Wednesday.
At least this time I know where to go.

PA-C: the phone interview
You’ve written a rocking resume, And HR emails you to say, “Hey! We saw your application and would be interested in speaking with you. Are you available on 3/31 at 10am?”
Yes, yes, you are. And if not, try to reschedule for mid-morning on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I’ve never worked in HR, but I’ve been told that those are the best times/days to ask for a promotion or, in this case, convince HR to let you have a chance at a face-to-face interview.
The phone interview is essentially a preliminary interview. Usually they take no more than 15 minutes (my longest interview phone interview was 30 minutes). Sometimes the recruiter will give you an introduction to the position and hospital system, other times they’ll launch right into the questions. The questions are standard, however, the way you answer can make all the difference.
I applied for a position that, honestly, I wasn’t sure that I was qualified, but it sounded interesting. The questions were pretty general, and upon completing the phone interview, I thought to myself, “Yeah, I’m not getting a face-to-face.” But I did. When I met the department head, he told me that the recruiter highly recommended me for interview due to my “professional and positive tone.”
If only they knew...mwahahaha
Tumblr media
But, anyhow...
How does one prepare for the phone interview?
Have your laptop/tablet open, Resume on one side of the screen, And job posting on the other side of the screen. Review, review, review.
Know your skill set, and sell it. Highlight your experience that is relevant to the position. Smile while you’re talking. Yeah, it’s weird, but it works!
Also, have pen and paper nearby. Jot down your greatest strengths. And your biggest weaknesses. (And what you’ve done to improve upon those weaknesses) What makes you a team player. A situation in which you’ve thrived despite obstacles. (Preferably a clinical setting situation)
And review the STAR interview format.
Frequently asked questions I received during phone interviews: How did you find out about this position? Why are you interested in [blank] specialty? Why are you interested in this particular hospital/clinic? What experiences have you had in [blank specialty]? Are you local or relocating?
Questions I’ve also been asked during phone interviews: What do you do when a patient is angry? What kind of feedback have you received from staff and patients? Do you prefer working independently or in a team? Where do you see yourself in 3/5/10 years?
Once the recruiter was out of questions, he/she usually proceeded to tell me the benefits that the hospital/clinic had to offer, etc. Then it was time for me to ask questions.
Questions I asked the recruiter: How many APPs total for this department? How long is the credentialing period? What is the onboarding process? How soon are you looking to fill the position? When would a candidate start if hired?
All of the recruiters I’ve met have been nonclinical, so I saved the clinical questions for the face-to-face interviews with the clinical team members.
The interview usually concluded with, “Thank you for your time. I will pass your responses to the clinical team, and you’ll be hearing from me in a week.”
I always followed up the phone interview with an email to the recruiter. I’d thank them for their time and write that I looked forward to hearing from them.
Yes, the phone interview is fairly straightforward. And rocking it will get you to the face-to-face (which I will be writing about soon).
Best of luck, you got this!

Review of the 2018 Kia Soul
Used car dealers in Omaha
Introduction
" But he's got a great personality!" When it comes to blind dates, this is the default description for somebody who might be lacking in the looks department.
The Kia Soul, a compact multi-purpose vehicle type thing that's not quite a subcompact crossover because of its absence of all-wheel drive, and not rather a hatchback due to the fact that of its imposing height, is not only a vehicle with character brimming from every crevice, but likewise has looks spanning the variety from charming to dreadful, depending upon whom you ask. And simply in 2015, Kia gave the Soul a lot more wit by slapping a turbocharger on the engine to make it even more personalized.
What Owners Say
2018 Kia Soul front quarter left photoThat last modification, provided exclusively in the leading trim level, solved a significant problem with this spunky little cars and truck. For that reason, for this review, J.D. Power examined a 2018 Kia Soul Exclaim geared up with optional flooring mats. The price pertained to $23,820, including the $895 location charge.
Before we discuss the outcomes of our evaluation of the Kia Soul, it is handy to comprehend who purchases this vehicle, and what they like most and least about their Souls.
More females than guys own Kia Souls, with 52% of Soul owners determining as woman. Compared to the Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle segment, 46% of owners are ladies.
Soul owners have to do with the same age as compact MPV owners (60 years vs. 61 years for the segment), but they delight in substantially lower typical yearly family income at $59,286 (vs. $78,682). This drastic difference may be discussed by the lorries in the competitive set, which consist of the Ford C-Max and Toyota Prius v, dedicated hybrids that may interest more upscale purchasers.
Approximately the exact same number of Soul owners and compact MPV owners recognize as Price Buyers, appearing to verify that lower average annual family earnings amongst Kia buyers is not, within the section, determining their choice in a car. Moreover, compact MPV owners are more concerned about fuel economy and eco-friendly cars than Soul owners are, reflecting the presence of dedicated hybrid models in the competitive set.
In other respects, Soul owners and compact MPV owners are aligned with two exceptions. Soul owners are more most likely to agree that they like an automobile that stands apart from the crowd (72% vs. 60%) which they like a lorry that uses responsive handling and powerful acceleration (82% vs. 76%).
Owners report that their favorite things about the Soul are (in coming down order) the outside styling, interior style, driving characteristics, seats, and storage and area. Owners suggest that their least favorite aspects of the Soul are (in descending order) visibility and security, the infotainment system, the climate system, the engine/transmission, and fuel economy.
What Our Expert Says
In the sections that follow, our expert offers her own perceptions about how the Kia Soul measures up in each of the 10 classifications that comprise the 2017 APEAL Study.
Outside
The Soul is a car of cartoonish percentages, all created to set it apart from its rivals. It's blocky from the beltline up and somewhat lumpy down, with the wheel arches and the front headlamps adding blobby elements to an otherwise squared-off lorry. The front grille (which isn't one, really) looks too small and the lower air consumption looks too big.
Kia jazzes up the Soul Exclaim's already extroverted outside with red accent lines to denote the engine's additional increase and bigger 18-inch wheels to give it a more assertive position. The Soul is one of those vehicles that you either like or dislike, but even haters might grow fond of it after driving it for a while.
Interior
Think about the base Soul. It has a small starting price of $16,995 (with $895 destination), but it comes with a much nicer interior than you 'd believe an automobile of that cost might consist of. In reality, the quality level easily makes sense in my more expensive test automobile, or perhaps a car priced closer to $30,000.
When compared to compact crossovers like the Chevrolet Trax or the Toyota C-HR, which are complete of cheap materials, the Soul's interior quality stands out much more. The cabin is made up of appealing soft-touch products and sturdy, nicely finished plastics, and collectively they lend the cars and truck an unexpected quantity of refinement.
The Exclaim's special fabric seats with leather bolsters and red contrast stitching are likewise magnificent elegant.
Seats
For chauffeurs, the Kia Soul is quite comfortable, and I constantly value it when little, affordable automobiles include a center console armrest, like a lot of variations of the Soul do. Seriously, who doesn't need an armrest? Nobody keeps his or her hands on the wheel at all times.
For passengers, comfort is fine except that the front right chair is mounted too low and is not geared up with a seat height adjustment unless you select the package that includes power adjustment. Without this upgrade, the traveler is treated to the equivalent of a dunce chair for a small time out. This, coupled with an absence of thigh support, indicates pain.
Rear-seat guests fare much better, due to the fact that the seat is mounted greater. Foot room abounds, however difficult plastic front seatback panels might show unpleasant for taller people. Shoulder space is great for 2, but 3 will find it tight.
Environment Control System
The climate control system is relatively basic, but in the Exclaim cut it is a single-zone automated system. A single knob changes temperature level, and because the car does not have a temperature level display you simply make it hotter or chillier than you are when you call in modification.
Impressively, though, the Soul has a Clean Air ionizer, which purportedly cleans up the cabin's air and keeps the interior smelling nice. It's just tough to tell if it's dealing with my grade-school-age children in the cars and truck.
Infotainment System
I was a little bummed to see that my test lorry did not include the Technology Package, that includes speaker that pulse with light to the thumping beat of what's playing on the audio system. They're really amusing, and along with all the other goodies that it features, like a navigation system and heating for the seats and guiding wheel, the Technology Package is a good buy.
Thankfully, however, the Soul Exclaim's standard infotainment system consists of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone forecast, so it was simple to get directions to locations.
In addition to smart device projection, Kia offers Soul owners open door to UVO eServices telematics functions for the duration of ownership. This consists of services such as automatic collision notice; speed, curfew and geographical boundary alerts for teenaged chauffeurs; an app that monitors where you last parked the Soul; and far more.
Storage and Space
The Soul's rectangle-shaped shape lends itself to bring a lot more than you would believe for such a small lorry, and storage is one of things that Soul owners like about their Kias. This is not unexpected, due to the fact that in the cabin, storage space is plentiful. There is a huge glove box, thoughtful little bins and trays around the transmission shifter, and huge door panel bins to make organizing your things simpler.
Behind the rear seats, an 18.8 cu.-ft. trunk gets itself to you. That measurement consists of a covered, separated tray under the cargo floor that organizes your things. Take that out and remove the cargo floor, and this little automobile products access to 24.2 cu.-ft. of area.
Without rear guests, you can fold the seats to develop 49.5 cu.-ft. These numbers extend beyond subcompact crossover SUV area and into the realm of bigger compacts, but just if you take the trouble of eliminating the helpful tray.
Exposure and Safety
Motorists delight in excellent forward visibility, but the view to the rear quarters is pretty abysmal due to the shape of the cars and truck and the width of the rearmost roofing system pillars. Luckily, big side mirrors and a basic reversing electronic camera do their best to minimize this issue.
While Kia makes a blind area warning system with rear cross-traffic alert offered in both of the Soul's higher trim levels, the turbocharged Exclaim can't be geared up with features like adaptive cruise control, forward accident warning, automated emergency situation braking, or lane departure caution. That's a bummer.
The Soul does a great job of securing occupants in a collision. The NHTSA awards the Soul a 5-star overall score for crashworthiness, while the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety provides it "Good" scores all around.
Engine/Transmission
Soul owners point out the powertrain as one of their least favorite aspects of the vehicle. Hopefully, they'll offer the turbocharged Soul Exclaim a try, as it alters the character of the car, and for the much better.
With 201 horses on tap from the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, the Soul Exclaim is not exactly a rocket, but it's much livelier than it used to be. Enthusiast publications claim it will speed up from absolutely no to 60 mph in about 7.6 seconds, which suffices to infuse your commute with some additional zip. Power shipment is relatively direct, although there is some turbo lag straight off the line.
Entrusted with sending out the power to the front wheels, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission shifts properly but gracelessly. A little more smoothness and improvement would be great, as would a manual gearbox that, admittedly, almost nobody would select. Missing out on is any kind of all-wheel-drive system, which would secure the Soul's membership in the popular crossover SUV section.
Fuel Economy
The EPA approximates that you ought to get 28 mpg in combined driving (26 city/31 highway mpg) with a Soul Exclaim. My screening produced a return of 25.5 mpg, which isn't excellent. The turbocharged Soul, despite making much more power than the naturally aspirated versions of the vehicle, is actually a bit more fuel effective than the engines that go into the base Soul and the Soul Plus trim.
Driving Dynamics
To assist take full advantage of driving satisfaction, Kia somewhat adjusts the Exclaim's suspension tuning, installs larger front brakes, and includes bigger wheels and tires.
While the Soul still preferred knocking about in the city, with its diminutive footprint, active handling, and ability to take in the ruts and bumps of disregarded public roadways, it nonetheless held its own on twisty back roadways threading through regional range of mountains. The steering had a fair quantity of heft to it, especially in Sport mode, but I wanted a little more feel, feedback and precision to make the automobile more enjoyable to drive. The brakes effectively resisted fade throughout aggressive driving, too, and managed daily driving tasks without getting or bringing the cars and truck to a jostling stop.
No, the Kia Soul Exclaim won't be competing in autocross rallies with the Volkswagen GTI or Mazda 3 anytime quickly. Its happy-go-lucky character and newfound potency makes it a lot more satisfying to drive than the small crossover lorries against which it will most likely be cross-shopped.
Final Impressions
By now, everybody should recognize with Kia's generous warranty that covers the whole lorry for 5 years or 60,000 miles, while the powertrain is protected for 10 years or 100,000 miles, together with totally free roadside support for 5 years without any mileage limit. That appeals to the logical side of your brain, together with the quality awards that both this automobile and Kia have actually received from J.D. Power in current years.
However what's more, the Kia Soul has a character. Yes, it's a little peculiar. Funky. Unconventional. It interest the weirdo in each of us, but at the very same time delivers more than its reasonable share of energy, flexibility, fun, and convenience. And now, with its readily available turbocharged engine, it is more appealing than ever previously.
There are plenty of people who drive the same thing everybody else does. With a Kia Soul parked in your driveway, you can happily be among the others.
2018 Kia Soul front quarter left photoThat last modification, offered entirely in the leading trim level, resolved a major complaint with this spunky little car. For this evaluation, J.D. The turbocharged Soul, regardless of making much more power than the naturally aspirated versions of the automobile, is in fact a little bit more fuel efficient than the engines that go into the base Soul and the Soul Plus cut.

Infotainment System
I was a little bummed to see that my test vehicle did not include the Technology Package, that includes speaker that pulse with light to the thumping beat of what's playing on the audio system. They're extremely entertaining, and along with all the other goodies that it features, like a navigation system and heating for the seats and steering wheel, the Technology Package is a bargain.

10 Under The Radar Free Agent Options (for when the Yankees decide to get cheap again)
With free agency getting closer and closer, Yankees fans are dreaming about Thanksgiving dinners headlined by Gerritt Cole signings, Anthony Rendon level flirtations and a Francisco Lindor level trade. The reality figures to be a TOUCH smaller than that unfortunately. The Yankees may make one big move and go "all in" but the idea that they're going to open the floodgates and turn into the Yankees who spent to win in the mid 2000s is probably off base. What's most likely is that they'll make a big splash early (Paxton in 2018, Stanton in 2017) and then calmly tiptoe through the offseason making sound decisions and occasionally flirting with a big name here or there. Remember that the Yankees two best signings, at least offensively, were financially sound and prudent depth moves that paid off big time in the long run with Gardner (1/10) and DJ LeMahieu (2/24). The Yankees do not have a bushel of needs to be filled outside of a starter, maybe another bullpen arm and some sort of solution on the infield. They do have some wants though and maybe these players will prove to be affordable wants who wind up filling needs down the line.
1. Cole Hamels, Chicago Cubs Will be 36
7-7 3.81 ERA 141.2 innings pitched 117 ERA+ 1.391 WHIP 9 H/9 3.6 BB/9 9.1 K/9
Why: Was apparently the back up option if the Yankees couldn't secure a deal with Toronto for J.A. Happ in 2018. Hamels has a proven playoff pedigree, has the prototypical fifth starter make up (gritty innings eater who survives with declining stuff) and the Yankees tend to prioritize left handed pitching given that the Redsox tend to be historically loaded up on lefties. The Yankees just lost CC Sabathia who clearly had a role as a veteran left hander who was capable of getting a competitive start each time out. Seems open and receptive to a one year deal.
Why Not: I mean they DID choose J.A Happ over him for a reason. Hamels, like Happ, was somewhat inconsistent in the juiced ball era with elevated contact rates (despite a lower home run per 9 innings than the four years prior) and elevated walk rates. Hamels has not thrown for 200 innings since 2016 and went for under 150 innings pitched in two of the last three seasons. Soft tossing (by today's standards) flyball pitchers tend to not do so hot in Yankee stadium.
2. 1B Eric Thames, Milwaukee Brewers Will Be 33
.247/.346/.505 25 HR 61 RBI 51 BB 140 K's 117 OPS+
Why: The Yankees have a potential opening for a platoon 1B who can mash righties and Thames had that going for him (.254/.348/.529 slugging for a 131+ OPS). He's got a sweet swing for NYS and would help balance a Yankees line up in serious need of a masher from the left side. Veteran lefty pop for a small fee would be insanely valuable for a Yankees team in need of more power from that side (with Didi likely gone). Has made spot appearances as an outfielder as well.
Why Not: Is he too much of a three outcome hitter (K, BB or HR) for a team loaded up with three outcome hitters? A nonstarter vs left handed pitching limits his appeal. Not a good fielder in the slightest. A poor defensive fit for 1st base or the outfield so he values more as a lefty DH type. Isn't this Mike Ford's job to be for a smidgen of the price?
3. (S)RP Drew Pomeranz, Milwaukee Brewers Will Be 31
2-10 4.85 ERA 104.2  innings pitched 88 ERA+ 1.433 WHIP 9.1 H/9 3.8 BB/9 11.9 K/9
Why: Completely rebuilt himself as a specialist out of the Brewers bullpen, racking up a cool .141 average against and a sparkling 2.39 ERA out of the pen. Could be a lefty specialist weapon to save the likes of Britton from making an early appearance. Reinvted himself in Milwaukee as a power pitcher out of the bullpen and curtailed his walk rate with a new pitch mix. Has been AT TIMES a successful starting pitcher in a pinch.
Why Not: Are you willing to invest 5-10 million dollars on 32 some odd innings of work? Has struggled in the past with walks although it was slightly less of an issue as a bullpen piece. Pomeranz has a continued issue with home runs even out of the bullpen (17 home runs in 77 innings as a starter, 4 in 26 innings as a bullpen arm).
4. C Alex Avila, Arizona Diamondbacks Will Be 33
.207/.353/.421 9 HR 24 RBI 36 BB 88 K's 100 OPS+
Why: Avila is an established name at catcher who has settled into a back up catcher role. Big OPB bat with a 17% walk rate last year for the D-Backs. Another lefty who hits righties well (near .800 OPS). Could provide a reliable back up and a mentor for Gary Sanchez. Not Sanchez-esque with his arm strength but has proven to be tough to run on.
Why Not: Has been on a steady decline since around 2016 both on offense and defense. Doesn't hit for much power or average. A step down from former back up Austin Romine.
5. IF Wilmer Flores, Arizona Diamonds Will Be 28
.317/.361/.487 9 HR 37 RBI 31 BB 15 K's 118 OPS+
Why: Across the last two seasons, he's played 2nd, 3rd and 1st. Has played shortstop in the past as well. Coming off a career year in Arizona with a career high 118 OPS+, average and slugging. A high contact hitter who could potentially alleviate the overreliance on mashers/deepen the line up at the bottom of the order.  Already used to the platoon infielder role with limited starts so there wouldn't be an adjustment period. Also let's not forget that Flores was a Met for five seasons and understands the demands of playing baseball in NYC.
Why Not: Has not played shortstop since 2016 and that would probably be the only spot he would see consistent time at. Flores has not been as good defensively as he was in the past and may be on the decline from a defensive standpoint. How much of his offense is courtesy of the juiced ball era and if they deaden the balls, will he turn back into a below average hitter?
6. IF Eric Sogard, Tampa Bay Rays Will Be 34
.290/.353/.437 13 HR 40 RBI 38 BB 63 K's 116 OPS+
Why: Another versatile all contact bat who can pinch hit across a variety of locations. Could provide a more experienced version of Tyler Wade in terms of versatility and the ability to play for contact. Was really good with consistent playing time for the Rays. He's coming off his career best offensive season which when combined with his versatility and ability to chip in at a number of spots, the Yankees would be wise to poke around. Also it's another lefty bat who could balance this lineup that right now features righties Giancarlo Stanton, DJ, Aaron Judge, Gleyber Torres and Gary Sanchez.
Why Not: Primarily a contact guy with a career high 13 HRs this season. He doesn't hit for much power and doesn't really walk much either, painting a similar picture to what the Yankees have with Thairo Estrada.  He's never been necessarily reliable for a full season. He might actually go from affordable to expensive for his skill set given that bad teams are going to try to sign him so they can flip him in July.
7. SP Brett Anderson, Oakland A's Will Be 32
13-9 3.89 ERA  176 innings pitched 1.307 WHIP 9.3 H/9 2.5 BB/9 4.6 K/9
Why: If the Yankees are god fearing about flyball contact then a guy with top 10 groundball rates might be of great interest to them. A left handed pitcher who could bounce between a long relief role or a spot starter job for this team. He had a 3.22 ERA away from Oakland so maybe leaving the Coliseum can further unlock Anderson's value.
Why Not: Always be wary of the dudes who are coming off career years that aren't THAT impressive. As such, Anderson with his somewhat questionable stuff coming off a career year might be a risky venture. His 176 innings were a career high and he's been oft injured since 2016. Is he any better than J.A. Happ as a #5 guy? Do you want to progress stop on Jordan Montgomery?
8. IF/OF Ben Zobrist, Chicago Cubs Will Be 39
Why: A reliable professional hitter who doesn't K much and draws plenty of walks. Outside of one season, he's played in 125 games or more for eight straight seasons.
Why Not: Approaching 40 years of age off a shortened season and has an OPS+ under 100 in 2 of the past three years. You figure at some point he is bound to decline and lose value. While he's versatile, it is worth noting that Zobrist doesn't play SS or CF aka the two spots the Yankees figure to have the most available PT at.
9. IF Brad Miller, Philadelphia Phillies Will Be 30
.260/.329/.565 13 HR 25 RBI 15 BB 45 K;s 125 OPS+
Why: A super versatile handyman who can play across a variety of spots. Has seen time at shortstop where the Yankees could use some help. Coming off a really great September where maybe something unlocked for him offensively.
Why Not: I mean the Yankees had him once. He was in their farm system as a veteran hand in case of emergency to start 2019 and then they dealt him away once Gio Urshela proved to be legitimate. He's a career journeyman type who bounces around and is wholly unreliable to stick. Most of his damage as a hitter was done in September (.327/.339/.800 (!) with 8 HRs) so he's probably just riding a hot streak as a hitter. Has been all downhill offensively since 2016 when he hit 30 home runs for Tampa.
10. IF Brock Holt, Boston Red Sox Will Be 32
.297/.369/.402 3 HR 31 RBI 28 BB 57 K's 101 OPS+
Why: Another chess piece who plays a variety of spots and another left handed bat who can add some depth to a righty happy Yankees lineup. A consistent .275 to .290-ish hitter if batting average is your deal.  Lauded in Boston for being a big community guy and clubhouse glue type.
Why Not: You probably have to pay a Yankees tax to get him to leave Boston.  Has truly no pop whatsoever and in terms of impact, he's a long ways away from his cameo as an All Star back in 2016. Has had issues with injuries recently.
