WEDNESDAY'S WEEKLY POETRY PROMPTS: 7/31/24 ~ A PREVIEW OF COMING ATTRACTIONS
A PREVIEW OF COMING ATTRACTIONS © 2024 - G. Smith (BMI) =================== Friday night at the picture show, The marquee lights are all aglow. He buys their tickets, holds the door, she walks in. They both have the feeling, something’s about to begin.
They pause and look over the concession stand, The next thing he knows, she takes his hand, With popcorn and Cokes they take their seats, As she passes close, he says she sure smells sweet.
The house-lights dim, the room grows dark, And for that split second, they both hear their hearts. This guy and this girl, Their world in a whirl; How will things work out? Do they have any doubts?
It’s a preview, Of coming attractions; A movie trailer of their life; Equal and opposite, Reactions. The lows and the highs, Through the rest of their lives; It’s a preview, Of coming attractions.
The last reel plays and the credits roll, Then they’re out on the square, taking a stroll; Past the hardware store and florist’s shop, At the jeweler’s window, they slow to a stop.
She laughs in a way he’s not heard before, But curfew is coming, so he gets her car door. They pull in her drive, Both feeling alive; And that tentative first kiss, Is complete utter bliss.
It’s a preview, Of coming attractions. A movie trailer of their life. A technicolor dream, Up there on the screen, Not some shadow picture in old black and white. It’s a preview, Of coming attractions.
Happiness and joy, Heartbreak and sorrow; This girl and this boy, Facing new days, new tomorrows.
It was a preview Of coming attractions. A movie trailer of our life. A cactus filled western, A romance about our turn, With me as your husband, and you as my wife. Just a preview, Of coming attractions, No sequel could possibly equal. Our happily ever-after life.

WIP - At The End of a Warm Gun
Okay, so this story I've been working on for a little bit now, and it is an idea I've worked off and on for quite some time. I call it a Fantasy-Western for its alternate history but there also some fantastical elements later on in the story.
I will say there is some very basic Spanish in the dialogue. I know very little, but I do intend to find a Spanish speaker to help me with that in further revisions.
Setting: The western edge of Texas where the prairie meets the desert. Seguaro's hung high alongside ancient mesquites that cast their shadows long. It begins on the homestead of the Sullivan family. Though, shrubs and indiangrass ran rampant, nothing else would grow on this dry land.
Backstory: The Union broke at the battle of Gettysburg on that second day, General Meade's larger force routed by the stubborn defense of the Confederates. Bloody familial war waged until Washington D.C., besieged and starving with its port blockade by English ships, conceded. The Confederate States of America had earned its independence -- it didn't last long.
Infighting and the lack of a strong leader after the sudden death of Jefferson Davis crumbled the new nation into a collection of city-states that, along with what remained of the Union, enough to keep European interests at bay but nothing else.
Out of this chaos The Republic of Texas, along with the Federalist Nation of California, formed into their own nations. Gobbled up states and territories around them under the pretense of internal and external security.
Here's the first chapter along with this intro!

March 30, 2023. Sabino Canyon. We left early to catch a naturalist walk that was a welcome chance to notice new things. Birding has been lovely. I saw my first Pyrrhuloxia (confusing because a male Northern Cardinal was there too) and roadrunners kept popping by. The most fun was panning for garnets in the river, a beautiful creek deep between the stone walls with seguaro cactus. We all found many small garnets and magnitite washed out of the granite.

The Seguaro Cactus is a protected plant species in the American Southwest-but not Texas!. Large seguaros take almost a century to grow to over 6 feet. But grow they must!
