how did seitokai yakuindomo get big?

you know, it's kind of bizarre how successful seitokai yakuindomo actually was as a franchise. thirteen years of 4koma manga from 2007 to 2020, two seasons of television from 2010-2014, eighteen OVAs (some of which shipped with the limited edition of the manga) from 2010-2020, and two theatrically released movies in 2017 and 2020. it might be one of the most successful franchises based off of 4koma manga of all time. hell, even if you don't even know the name of the series, you've most likely seen a few clips that are infamous. like this one:

and the fact that the series is kinda successful. that teacher just offered to piss in that teenagers mouth; this should be a turn-off for most people, and yet it was a successful franchise that ran for fucking years because despite it essentially being the humor equivalent of playing the penis game.

like, compare seitokai yakuindomo to shimoneta: a world where dirty jokes don't exist. shimoneta is a light novel series that has a similar sort of appeal to it; it's a work that also involves a lot of raunchy humor involving penises and vaginas. ayame and shino, if they met, would probably have a very...interesting conversation that would probably result in tanukichi freaking out and tsuda's quipping abilities being pushed to the brink. shimoneta only has a light novel, manga adaptation, and a single season of televised anime, putting it on the same level of success as seirei tsukai no bladedance, a series i love and adore with all my heart yet no one has heard of.

yet shimoneta is a different beast altogether than seitokai yakuindomo, I feel. for one thing, it has a continuing story and actual themes that tie into the story. it's attempting to say something, to tell a love story, to display a nightmare future and the consequences, and also to make you laugh, and I feel like its ambition to combine side-splitting dirty humor in a dark-ish dystopian setting doesn't always work to achieve these storytelling goals. also, sometimes the author makes it pretty clear that the topic that he actually cares about is his porno collection and how you'll have to drag his pornography from his cold, dead, hands.

seitokai yakuindomo, on the other hand, is funny. and it doesn't need to be anything more than that. it surprisingly pushes few buttons in regards to content; while the language may be filthy, the events themselves are fairly normal and mundane. there are issues with the writing, too; for example, ujie tozen cannot write a second male tsukkomi that is older than Tsuda (when the principal quips back at Naruko, he shouldn't sound exactly like the teenage main character) and some characters have only one joke (nene, suzu's best friend, is an insufferable presence).

still, syd rules, and i'm surprised it went for so long.

I remember you once made a post a few years ago about your top 3 animes every year since 2010, but it stopped at 2016. Care to finish the list for the decade?

I’ve always thought about doing that actually, so this was good timing. I’d also just like to highlight the following because I noticed that I had failed to make this clear in my original post - This list incorporates solely the TV series versions of anime, so any OVAs or movies will be excluded. That’s rather painful for me to do because a movie like A Silent Voice is not only my joint favourite anime movie of all time, but it would certainly be in my top 3 anime of the decade in general, but alas, this is the rule that I have chosen.

Special mentions to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Bakemonogatari, both of which finished airing in 2010, and would have both made the top 3, but they both started airing in 2009 :)

Seitokai Yakuindomo Manga Ends Today After 15 Years With Enako Cosplay Collaboration

  Today marked the final chapter of the cult-classic manga series Seitokai Yakuindomo, a four-panel comedy slice-of-life manga by Tozen Ujiie. The last chapter was published today in Weekly Shonen Magazine alongside a collaboration with Japan's top cosplayer Enako, who wore the school uniform that fans have gotten to know over the last 15 years.

  Seitokai Yakuindomo began in May 2007 in Kodansha's Magazine Special, where it ran for a year and was eventually transferred to Weekly Shonen Magazine in July 2008, where it has been serialized since. The manga was adapted into two TV anime series, two OVA series, and two anime films, with the last film opening in Japanese theaters on January 1, 2021. The final volume of the collected chapters is scheduled to be released in January 2022, capping off the series.

  Seitokai Yakuindomo creator Tozen Ujiie commented on the ending, saying it was a "dense 15 years," and that they "were honored to have spent that time with the readers." Thank you Ujiie-sensei for the laughs!

Seitokai Yakuindomo Manga's 17th, 18th Volumes to Bundle New Anime DVDs

The wraparound jacket band on Tozen Ujiie's 16th Seitokai Yakuindomo manga volume revealed on Friday that the 17th and 18th volumes will bundle original anime DVDs when they ship on April 17, 2019 and August 16, 2019, respectively.

Hiromitsu Kanazawa is once again directing the anime at GoHands and is also overseeing the scripts. Makoto Furuta is also returning as the character designer and chief animation director. Yūya Mori is again composing the music, and King Records is producing the music.

Shintarō Asanuma, Satomi Satou, Yōko Hikasa, and Sayuri Yahagi are all returning to reprise their roles as the characters Takatoshi Tsuda, Aria Shichijō, Shino Amakusa, and Suzu Hagimura, respectively.

Tokyo Babylon 2021, l’anime è stato rimandato per un caso di plagio

Il sito ufficiale di “Tokyo Babylon 2021″ ha annunciato che la serie animata, tratta dal manga “Tokyo Babylon” delle CLAMP (X, Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, xxxHOLiC), non andrà più in onda da aprile 2021, ma è di fatto stato posticipato a data da definire. Lo staff ha preso la decisione dopo aver riconosciuto di aver preso a riferimento dei vestiti per i design senza permesso, rimuovendo di conseguenza immagini e trailer rilasciati in precedenza, scusandosi infine per l’accaduto.

Per l’abito alla moda di Hokuto Sumeragi, a quanto pare, è stato preso a modello quella indossato in un foto promozionale da Yeri del gruppo coreano Red Velvet.

La tradizionale tenuta da onmyōji di Subaru Sumeragi sembra, invece, stata presa da quella indossata da un bambola a marchio Volks.

A dirigere l’adattamento presso lo studio GoHands (K, Coppelion, Seitokai Yakuindomo) ci sono Shingo Suzuki (K, Coppelion) e Susumu Kudo (K, Coppelion), mentre la sceneggiatura sta venendo curata da Jun Kumagai (Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, Bungo to Alchemist: Shinpan no Haguruma). Il design dei personaggi è ad opera di Makoto Furuta (Seitokai Yakuindomo, K), il quale supervisiona anche il comparto animazioni assieme a Keiji Tani. Infine le musiche per la colonna sonora sono composte da Noriyuki Asakura (Knights of Sidonia, Atom: The Beginning) per King Records.

Le sigle di testa e coda della serie saranno cantate rispettivamente da Shouta Aoi e Nana Mizuki.

Siamo nel 1991, gli ultimi giorni della bolla economica giapponese, e il denaro e l'eleganza corrono per le strade. Così come le correnti di oscurità sotto di loro, che alimentano gli spiriti maligni che solo le arti degli onmyōji - i leggendari occultisti giapponesi - possono combattere. I due onmyōji più potenti sono nelle improbabili vesti di un bel giovane veterinario, Seishiro, e dell'erede adolescente dell'antico clan dei Sumeragi, Subaru.

Japan Box Office: Natsume Yujin-cho New Anime Film Ranks 7th in Its Opening Weekend

    Two years and three months after the previous feature film Natsume Yujin-cho the Movie: Ephemeral Bond in September 2018, Natsume Yujin-cho: Ishi Okoshi to Ayashiki Raihousha (The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor) was released in 65 theaters in Japan on January 16, 2021.

  Despite its small number of theaters, the 51-minute film ranked seventh in its first weekend. Its opening weekend gross has not yet been reported. It also ranked second in Filmarks' first-day satisfaction ranking with an approval rating of 3.81 based on 116 reviews.

  The anime series inspired by Yuki Midorikawa's supernatural mystery shoujo manga has had six TV anime series from 2008 to 2017, one OVA in 2014, and one feature film in 2018. This second film is based on the manga's two popular yet-animated episodes - "Ishi Okoshi" and "Ayashiki Raihousha." The first film's Hideki Ito returned to the director's chair, alongside the general director Takahiro Omori.

  Last weekend's No.1 film, Gintama THE FINAL dropped to second in its second weekend. The film earned 151 million yen (1.45 million USD) on 106,000 admissions on its second Saturday and Sunday, which was a huge 50 percent down from the previous week. Its cumulative box office revenue has reached 800 million yen (7.69 million USD) with 600,000 ticket sales.

  The film regained the top spot in its 14th weekend was, of course, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, which earned 230 million yen (2.21 million USD) on 123,000 admissions. It has sold 26.44 million tickets and earned 36.17 billion yen (347 million USD) so far, and has continued to break the all-time records in Japan.

  Seitokai Yakuindomo: The Movie 2, which had dominated Kogyo Tsushinsha's mini-theater ranking for two consecutive weeks, finally dropped to fifth in its third weekend.
