SELF VALIDATION

First things first, if you validate your existence on externalities, you will never truly be happy. While it’s important to have values and to act on them, it shouldn’t be your main source of happiness. 

E.g. parent validation, academic validation, and male validation. So, here are some tips to validate yourself. 

VALUE YOUR OPINION. You should have the ability to make decisions and identify yourself solely on your opinion. Trust, giving people that ability to shape your decisions and curate your identity, allows them to dictate your worth. 

SELF LOVE OVER OTHERS. Ensure you are doing everything in your power to treat yourself lovingly. Even if it means sacrificing a few things in life. E.g. going to sleep early instead of cramming for a test. 

BE RESILIENT. When I say that, I don’t mean ‘don't let anything affect you’ but rather, build yourself up to the point that when someone/something knocks you down, you can bounce back easily. 

BECOME SELF AWARE. Know your strengths, and weaknesses, and be mindful of the truth. Be genuine when it comes to this because self-awareness helps us with becoming more in touch with our inner selves.

AVOID NEGATIVE SELF TALK. This can cause us to rely on others to hear good things about ourselves. Instead, say affirmations in the mirror.

STOP PEOPLE PLEASING. There’s a difference between genuinely being nice, and being a doormat. You shouldn’t have to bend over backwards for others, and they give absolutely nothing back. Invest that time and effort into yourself.

SOMEONE’S GAIN IS NOT YOUR LOSS. This is a mindset shift that will change the game. You have to stop seeing successful, wealthy, pretty or intelligent people as threatening your skills or talents. There is enough success for everyone.

DETACH FROM OTHERS. Friends, family, males, etc. Stop letting how other people treat you, dictate your mood for the rest of the day. The only factor your mood should depend on is you. What you do, say, and act is the only factor. 

KNOCK OTHERS FROM YOUR PEDESTAL. The only person that should be on top of your pedestal, is you. By doing this, you create an inferiority complex for someone else and give them superiority. 

OTHER’S OPINIONS ARE MOMENTARY. They will always move on with their day and see what needs to be done. They do not care about you as much as you think. So, do not even try to give them the time of day. 

BUILD BOUNDARIES. With others and yourself. Both are equally important because you value yourself enough not to do something you’ll regret.

Solar Return Observations ☀️✨

Hi friends! Today we’re discussing solar return notes + what I’ve observed from them. I’ve been observing for three years, but I’m not able to fit all of the details in one post. I can always make another 🦋 enjoy and feel free to like, comment and reblog.

Chiron in the 7th house 💌- Healing through partnership and connections. I’ve had this placement last year and went through a breakup which taught me a lot about self worth (Aries ruled 7th house SR) and I learned to stand up for myself. I learned to be my own best friend and start over after a loss. Everything in terms of my relationship and how I viewed it changed completely. It was a pretty long journey, being that Chiron is the wounded healer, I’d say about a year the cycles were going on. Anyone who has this placement in their SR chart, you can expect for healing to occur in your relationships. Not necessarily a breakup always, but definitely wounding will come up that year.

Neptune in the 6th house 🌷- Routines can be heavily centered around spirituality. Meditation, yoga, occult practices become a theme in the daily life. Existence Value: Why All of Nature is Important Whether We Can Use it or Not

I spend a lot of time around other nature nerds. We’re a bunch of people from varying backgrounds, places, and generations who all find a deep well of inspiration within the natural world. We’re the sort of people who will happily spend all day outside enjoying seeing wildlife and their habitats without any sort of secondary goal like fishing, foraging, etc. (though some of us engage in those activities, too.) We don’t just fall in love with the places we’ve been, either, but wild locales that we’ve only ever seen in pictures, or heard of from others. We are curators of existence value.

Existence value is exactly what it sounds like–something is considered important and worthwhile simply because it is. It’s at odds with how a lot of folks here in the United States view our “natural resources.” It’s also telling that that is the term most often used to refer collectively to anything that is not a human being, something we have created, or a species we have domesticated, and I have run into many people in my lifetime for whom the only value nature has is what money can be extracted from it. Timber, minerals, water, meat (wild and domestic), mushrooms, and more–for some, these are the sole reasons nature exists, especially if they can be sold for profit. When questioning how deeply imbalanced and harmful our extractive processes have become, I’ve often been told “Well, that’s just the way it is,” as if we shall be forever frozen in the mid-20th century with no opportunity to reimagine industry, technology, or uses thereof.

Moreover, we often assign positive or negative value to a being or place based on whether it directly benefits us or not. Look at how many people want to see deer and elk numbers skyrocket so that they have more to hunt, while advocating for going back to the days when people shot every gray wolf they came across. Barry Holstun Lopez’ classic Of Wolves and Men is just one of several in-depth looks at how deeply ingrained that hatred of the “big bad wolf” is in western mindsets, simply because wolves inconveniently prey on livestock and compete with us for dwindling areas of wild land and the wild game that sustained both species’ ancestors for many millennia. “Good” species are those that give us things; “bad” species are those that refuse to be so complacent.

Even the modern conservation movement often has to appeal to people’s selfishness in order to get us to care about nature. Look at how often we have to argue that a species of rare plant is worth saving because it might have a compound in it we could use for medicine. Think about how we’ve had to explain that we need biodiverse ecosystems, healthy soil, and clean water and air because of the ecosystem services they provide us. We measure the value of trees in dollars based on how they can mitigate air pollution and anthropogenic climate change. It’s frankly depressing how many people won’t understand a problem until we put things in terms of their own self-interest and make it personal. (I see that less as an individual failing, and more our society’s failure to teach empathy and emotional skills in general, but that’s a post for another time.)

Existence value flies in the face of all of those presumptions. It says that a wild animal, or a fungus, or a landscape, is worth preserving simply because it is there, and that is good enough. It argues that the white-tailed deer and the gray wolf are equally valuable regardless of what we think of them or get from them, in part because both are keystone species that have massive positive impacts on the ecosystems they are a part of, and their loss is ecologically devastating.

But even those species whose ecological impact isn’t quite so wide-ranging are still considered to have existence value. And we don’t have to have personally interacted with a place or its natural inhabitants in order to understand their existence value, either. I may never get to visit the Maasai Mara in Kenya, but I wish to see it as protected and cared for as places I visit regularly, like Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. And there are countless other places, whose names I may never know and which may be no larger than a fraction of an acre, that are important in their own right.

I would like more people (in western societies in particular) to be considering this concept of existence value. What happens when we detangle non-human nature from the automatic value judgements we place on it according to our own biases? When we question why we hold certain values, where those values came from, and the motivations of those who handed them to us in the first place, it makes it easier to see the complicated messes beneath the simple, shiny veneer of “Well, that’s just the way it is.”

And then we get to that most dangerous of realizations: it doesn’t have to be this way. It can be different, and better, taking the best of what we’ve accomplished over the years and creating better solutions for the worst of what we’ve done. In the words of Rebecca Buck–aka Tank Girl–“We can be wonderful. We can be magnificent. We can turn this shit around.”

Let’s be clear: rethinking is just the first step. We can’t just uproot ourselves from our current, deeply entrenched technological, social, and environmental situation and instantly create a new way of doing things. Societal change takes time; it takes generations. This is how we got into that situation, and it’s how we’re going to climb out of it and hopefully into something better. Sometimes the best we can do is celebrate small, incremental victories–but that’s better than nothing at all.

Nor can we just ignore the immensely disproportionate impact that has been made on indigenous and other disadvantaged communities by our society (even in some cases where we’ve actually been trying to fix the problems we’ve created.) It does no good to accept nature’s inherent value on its own terms if we do not also extend that acceptance throughout our own society, and to our entire species as a whole.

But I think ruminating on this concept of existence value is a good first step toward breaking ourselves out first and foremost. And then we go from there.

in your last life, you may have depended on others for what you should do/how you should feel. you feel out of balance when you don't submit to other people because, by nature, you are a people pleaser. you are ready to let people walk over you in hopes of getting their approval or respect... or simply because you don't want confrontation, or maybe because you want to be nice. not everyone is going to appreciate your kindness and, in fact, will actually use your kindness to their advantage. in this lifetime, you must establish your own identity instead of relying on what other people think of you; you must establish personal boundaries of "no", "maybe another time", "i don't like how that made me feel", etc. to build a foundation and a clear border of respect between you and others. you must, in this life, learn to take action and direct yourself instead of waiting for others. you do not live your life for others, and this is what your karma for this lifetime will teach you

you must be ready to love and nurture yourself if you want to have healthy relationships with others. if you have ever been in a relationship before, your identity may have revolved around theirs, or your identity was very wishy-washy and there was no clear sign of individuality coming from you. you may have questioned who you are numerous times and have tried discovering yourself. meditation, journalling, and personal reflection will be of great help to you, as you must be readily available to establish who you are now and what you want to be.

you must learn how to set boundaries with others and more about self-discipline. you tend to feel imbalanced when you sense something is out of order. this might demotivate you completely. however, through making routines and directing energy through things you enjoy, you will actually cultivate more success. doing things impulsively is not a bad thing but make sure you do it because there is an end goal awaiting you...

your lesson? to learn individuality and eliminate the need to depend on others. learn about yourself first, build your own identity, set routines, and create boundaries that clearly distinguish who you are and what you are ready to tolerate and not. redirect the energy you show others towards yourself and watch yourself attract people that align with your frequency.

taurus nn/scorpio sn - self-esteem, obsession, judgment

your lesson? to learn the importance of routine and grounding. you must focus and remain on earth, even when your head isn't. practice spirituality but don't let it consume you. don't wait for a great spiritual retreat while you are still stuck on earth. do not practice in mindless games with others and do not engage in the addiction sadness can bring. learn to take accountability for your behavior. help others, but only when you know you help yourself also. participate in things that help you build your self-confidence. learn to trust others, but do not let them take advantage of your kindness. do not look at the big picture without analyzing the fine print in any and every scenario. learn not to give up over inconveniences and learn to build a tenacious and courageous personality.

libra nn/aries sn — decision making, cooperation, friendship

in your last life, you may have been overly selfish and individualistic, you refused to know others, or at least neglected their presence or existence in your life. you were overly impulsive and let this control your life. you are unaware of partnership, or at least hesitant on it, because you want to do things your way. you think your speed is the right speed, your way is the only way, and your opinion is the only opinion that matters. you may live life on a constant high where you challenge yourself.

you must work with people who bring you lessons of empathy, sensitivity, and communication. asking for help is never a problem, especially when you do it to be better. in relationships, you may fear intimacy or commitment because you may feel your individuality is threatened and you may leave immediately. this is not a healthy mindset to have, just because your personality is being challenged. and actually, any issues you have, such as feeling restrained, are perfect opportunities for open communication with your partners or people in general. you are used to being self-sufficient and relying on yourself. this is actually a common trait in people who are narcissistic and see life as a game of survival. your need for solitude and independence will only get you so far before you realize there are more ways to make life great and productive, including working with other people.

you may be so tied up in yourself that you forget others have feelings, too. in relationships, for example, it may become difficult for you to comprehend your partner's feelings because you rarely think beyond your own brain. you need to become more selfless with people instead of always assuming you are right and that you deserve everything, while others don't. by becoming inaccessible to others you limit the connections you have in life. you try protect your identity by letting people see parts of it, rather than expressing yourself to others.

your lesson? learn duality by working with others in a way that is healthy and cooperative. your last life comprised of you fighting to be alone and independent, but it bit back by starving you off relationships and causing you to become overly self-reliant. working with others bears no threat to you. asking for help is not a bad thing. assertiveness and impulsivity are great traits to have but they should be in balance with patience and careful decision-making. humble yourself by recognizing you cannot make it through life alone without the aid of others - romantic or platonic - because your karma relies on others for help. you must learn healthy communication and learn to get along with others by becoming open-minded to their lifestyle. you can maintain your individuality while in a relationship — don't convince yourself you can't.

scorpio nn/taurus sn — self-worth, money, and partnership

your "achilles heal" in this lifetime is believing your worth is tied to money and materials. you are the type to believe that "once i have this and that, and once i have more money, i will finally be happy." all you want is money really, and you may be possessive with what you have, or secretive with your possessions. in this lifetime, you are meant to share with others, whether romantically, platonically, or in work, to foster a culture in which you become openminded on things that matter beyond just money and possessions.

in your past life, you may have had a life with rigid rules. now, you may have been born with an "it is what it is" attitude, causing you to stagnate throughout life because you believe things are supposed to go a certain way always, rather than becoming aware of other ways to achieve your goals. you are born with certain values or beliefs and in this lifetime, you will be tested on whether you are willing to let rigid beliefs go, or if you will stick with them, using them as your pillar for security, predictability, and safety. if you fail to experiment with life and acknowledge your soul needs for things like travel, meditation, and prayer, you may become stuck with living "one way", shunning your spiritual health and sticking to what is predictable. there is the habit of extreme tunnel vision and you must become aware of it.

one key lesson for you in this life is to learn partnership with others, especially in romantic relationships. you may feel tempted to do things by yourself "my way, or the hard way" but one challenge for you may be the lack of resources you find because truthfully, you are not supposed to work alone in this lifetime. you may have spent some time in your past life in solitude but you have the gift of creating and building and earning money with someone. think of them as another step towards what you want...

another lesson for you may be to release your urges to be stubborn, rigid, and fixed, and to humble yourself. you have a habit of being a "know it all" with no regard for other people's input and thereby think everything must be done your way because it is the only way. you may feel as though your life is going to be a long, hard process in which you will become enslaved to society to make money and work. your life was not meant to be difficult now, because you have already overworked yourself in your past life. instead, there needs to be a refocusing of materials and money, towards the question of your spiritual health, what makes you happy, and what you can do to improve yourself spiritually.

you constantly need attention and approval and, in this lifetime, you will learn the importance of balancing the ego and being humble. you must work with others and give back to humankind, as they were the ones who brought you your attention and grandeur in previous lifetimes. you must direct your energy towards others instead of to yourself. by constantly feeding yourself with attention, you tend to think you don't need anyone and that you can do it all by yourself. this is not true; there are many parts of you that, in actuality, are insecure.

in this life, you must focus on what really feeds you spiritually and soulfully. this is a life of reflection and meditation. you must let go of the details and look at life through a lens much bigger than now. you must look at life with an open mind. this is a self-purifying placement more than anything. you may have a habit of always trying to do everything, which ultimately causes you to do nothing. you rush yourself to do everything, you don't actually end up being productive at all, despite being a very productive sign.

''the morning light, when it comes to me, it was there but I could not see''

Arthur’s life was profoundly shaped by his self-hatred, lack of self-worth and disbelief in the existence of kindness in a seemingly dark and cruel world.

I strongly disagree with the statement that Arthur only became a ‘’better’’ man after being diagnosed with tb. His struggle with his true/inner self is apparent as early as chapter one. ‘’You are not who you think you are, sir… which is lucky’’

He has lived a rough life, raised by criminals and surrounded by violence ever since he was born. It was installed in him early that his value lied within being a violent enforcer and he has lived this life since, knowing nothing else. As a highly aware person, Arthur's actions weight heavy on his soul. He accepts that his actions have consequences. He knows that a person who has caused so much suffering is not meant to have happiness in life. His way of life has caused him to believe that he is not worthy of love or redemption. He doesn’t want to believe that a person like him could be capable of any good. (a thing to note here is that imo, Arthur’s actions near his death weren’t attempts at redemption but rather a strong desire to do right and possibly be his true self.) This is why he keeps living as he does as it’s the only thing he’s ever known, it’s the thing that brings him profit, praise from the person he looks up to and he is already damned so he might as well continue living this life anyway.

The internal problem Arthur faces is that this violent, cruel way of life doesn’t align with what I’d call his true self/ideals. He is torn between the harsh reality he has known and an unconscious yearning for righteousness/love. To be able to carry on with his actions he must enforce certain ideals within himself, such as: I am bad, ugly, nasty, ignorant, mean etc. He also decides to see the dark side of reality, telling himself that the world is a grim dark place and this is just as things were meant to be. This is why he feels so uncomfortable being complimented for his good deeds, because a bad rotten person like him should not be able to do good. It breaks the image he has built for himself and he doesn’t want that happening. This can be seen a lot during the ‘’Money Lending and Other Sins’’ missions where he is unusually mean (even for his standards) to each of the debtors. Imo, he acts this way because he must truly convince himself of being a terrible man to be able to carry out a job which revolts him so badly. In the last debt collecting mission with J. John Weathers, it can be seen in his face/expressions how much he is struggling to put on a tough, uncaring, heartless act. He needs to maintain a ruthless persona to survive in the world he knows. He must convince himself of his own cruelty.

''Forgive me, but that's the problem. You don't know you.''

Contrary to Arthur’s beliefs, he is a naturally kind-hearted person who is unconsciously drawn towards kindness. And yes, even before he was diagnosed with tb. This can be seen in the people he respects the most and, in his willingness to help strangers (notice how he often does unnecessary acts of service for total strangers such as: carrying their things, holding out hands etc. even though they had already troubled him). Despite the life he has lived, Arthur does not enjoy violence, he does not enjoy hurting people. He doesn’t want to dominate over others. He thinks mostly about others and not about himself. This fact alone is very telling of his character.

He writes about Charles, a man who he truly respects: ‘’He’s a better man than me. He does not need to think to be good. It comes naturally to him, like right is deep within as opposed to this conflict between GOOD↔EVIL that rages within me.’’ A man who is not struggling with his inner self would not have written this. To me this clearly implies an inner desire to be a better man. He writes about his mentors: ‘’I love Dutch like a father, but in many ways, I love Hosea even more. He’s kind and fair and like a human being. Dutch is something else.’’ Clearly showing a preference for Hosea who is of a more gentle nature and shows genuine kindness. Unsurprisingly, these are the people who see through his dumb/though act and encourage him to drop it.

When he comes across Brother Dorkins for the first time, he writes: ‘’(he)was one of those innocent people who make you feel better about human beings and about yourself a little. Must be odd to see all that goodness in the world. Place always seemed dark and brutal to me.’’ Expressing how he does not see goodness in the world, implying lack of good examples/kindness/good experiences in his life. Yet, the monk leaves an impression and imo, this encounter (seeing genuine goodness) disrupts Arthur’s perception of what the world truly is. ‘’Just as evil begat evil your whole life long, so good may begat good’’ (what strengthens my belief in this, is the following, symbolic scene of Arthur realising the consequences of his actions right after picking up a crucifix. He was aware of them before sure, but is unable to truly ignore them now having seen it right in front of his eyes). If only Arthur was presented with more examples of goodness in his life.

''You have it in you... I can tell!''

His desire to do as much good as possible after realising he won’t live long is instant. This would not be the mindset of someone who did not already possess kindness in his heart. ‘’Know glory and forget about shame.’’ Arthur’s shame and self-loathing caused by his previous actions were what was holding him back from allowing kindness into his life. Knowing that he has limited time left has not made him into someone he wasn’t before. The diagnosis was a catalyst, allowing him to embrace that love/goodness truly does exist and accelerate the process of chipping away from the persona he has made for himself. This was a newfound understanding for him as in the past he was rejecting any notion of kindess. In himself and perhaps the whole existence of it. ‘’You keep hidden all that matters, even from yourself.’’

After being diagnosed, he writes: ‘’What kind of a man have I been? What kind of a man am I? What world is this we live in? A land of fury or a place of love? Am I being prepared for eternal damnation? Am I past any kind of saving? Is that all fairytales? Man ain’t got much good in him. I ain’t got no good in me… I don’t think and yet I see goodness. I see it. If not in me, in good folk. In Abigail and her love for Jack. In that silly monk. In Downes, I guess. Begging not for himself but for the poor, even though he was near starving himself. Maybe I don’t want salvation. Part of me has always longed for death.’’ This entry perfectly shows how deep Arthur’s self-loathing goes and just how much it has damaged him. As his journal allows a look into his true feelings, he truly does not see a single good thing about himself. He knew for a long time that the way he lives is detestable but he could not let go of it. Not because he didn’t want to, but because it’s all that he has ever known. He didn’t believe in anything else. This sudden acceptance of goodness has allowed him to see clearly, which was obscured from him before, and for the first time, enabled him to act free of past regrets for what is right.
