Animal of the Day!

Warty Frogfish (Antennarius maculatus)

Conservation Status- 

Habitat- Indian Ocean coral reefs; Pacific Ocean coral reefs

Size (Weight/Length)- 15 cm

Diet- Small fish; Shrimp; Small crabs

Cool Facts- The warty frogfish is the master of coral reef camouflage. Over the span of a few weeks, they can turn their coloration to match their surroundings. Even in bleached coral reefs, warty frogfish can turn white to match the dead corals. A specially adapted lure with a bait-like juts from their forehead. Although it normally lays flat on their back, when hunting they use this lure to bring fish into striking range. Their modified pectoral fins that look like feet are used to walk across corals and the ocean floor rather than swim. In open water, warty frogfish can swim although they prefer walking when searching for prey.

This week, from my 3x08 coda, a boy and his pup and a need to hurry home and me not being able to resist briefly drifting into a dog's POV because what am I, strong? No. Also this is eight sentences.

When Carlos skips down from the school bus steps, he’s met by his mom and Rocky at the stop. She doesn’t usually bring Rocky with her. Last time was his birthday, which was rainy and the ground wasn’t too hot for Rocky’s paws. Rocky strains on his green leash, rising to lick Carlos’ face. Carlos thinks he’s the best dog in the world – a black mouth cur with a sympathetic teddy bear face – and Rocky thinks Carlos is the best boy in the world – a quietly passionate soul with a big heart.

Andrea helps Carlos remove his bright red backpack and carries it for him while they and Rocky walk to their house. She’s not saying much and is walking fast – like a jog but less than a jog, it’s like a whole new speed – and Rocky is loving it, it’s incredibly exciting, but Carlos struggles to match her pace after a tiring day. Andrea's face is upset – not to the point of crying, but Carlos can feel pain radiating from her, the same way he can feel the warmth of her skin while they are hand-in-hand.

Animal of the Day!

Pampas Cat (Leopardus colocola)

Conservation Status- Near Threatened

Habitat- Andes Mountain range

Size (Weight/Length)- 60 cm

Diet- Small mammals; Bird eggs

Cool Facts- Due to the Pampas cat’s elusive behavior and hard to traverse habitat, little is known about these small felines. They thrive in their grassland home, using their coloration to blend in with the thick grass. Pampas cats are found on mountain plateaus up to 5,000 meters tall. Their preferred food are viscachas and guinea pigs. Some scientists believe the Pampas cat to be fully nocturnal while others believe the complete opposite. Hopefully, as technology increases, there will be more opportunities to study this elusive feline.
