Shipper Tag Game
Tagged By @kila09
1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?
I wouldn't say I don't care anymore, I just haven't been inspired by them in a while, but definitely Inu/Kag. They were not my first ship, but they were the first ship I wrote for.
2. Which ship would you consider your first one?
Serena/Darien from the Sailor Moon US dub.
3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?
Inu/Kag. And no...you can't read it.
4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?
Inu/Kag. it was drawn by my friend
5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?
Ha! I am the discourse....yes. I do.
6. Did you used to have a NOTP or have it currently?
Kataang and Sess/Rin. The full body cringe I get when I think of either of them...
7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?
Zutara
8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?
Zutara, forever and ever. Usa/Mamo (now that I've seen the original Japanese version), Inu/Kag
9. Is there any couple, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?
Zutara. They are my only OTP that isn't canon, but they should have been. Hayley and Andy from Modern Family is next. I'm honestly not happy at how they handled Hayley's arc in general. The writers were so cruel to her! I'm still not over it, and I'm mulling over a fix-it fic for her (one-shot probably). Ichabbie (Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills) are in third place, but a very distant third. I lost all respect for Sleepy Hollow after how they treated both Abbie the character and Nichole Beharie the actress.
10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?
...no. Not really. I mean, I guess you could count CaptainSwan from OUAT, but that's less I didn't like the ship and more I wanted to get rid of Emma so EYE could have Hook.
11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now would be canceled over?
I mean...probably? I can't think of any right now. I only have a handful of ships that I care enough about to talk about, and most of them don't appear on my blog, so...🤷🏾‍♀️
12. What was your favorite crack ship?
Mai/Aang (or Flying Dagger as I call them). I don't even really consider this a crack ship. Don't get me wrong, I see them being a disaster together, but not in a cracky sort of way. More of a reality show couple way.
13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of?
Zutara these days. It used to be more of an even split between my top 3 ships, but the fact that I get around to reading anything these days feels like an accomplishment.
14. What do most of your ships usually have in common?
Powerful women and the powerful men who would die protecting them. Also, powerful women and the powerful men who are their biggest cheerleaders
15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship?
I mean...pick a trait from Kataang, and that's pretty much it. Hero gets the girl because he's the hero; the woman becomes the supportive background partner no matter how powerful and ambitious she was before she got with him; Man can't control his violent outburst without his partner's help. Kataang is the embodiment of everything I hate in a ship.

thank you for tagging me @colgatebluemintygel MWAH <33 (this is serena.. from tumblr btw..). This is from a fun little Ugly Betty AU I'm working on with remus as. well. Ugly Betty.
“I haven't been checking him out,” Sirius says, “I just happen to run a fashion magazine, and I’m good at what I do.” “Is that so?” Regulus asks, his voice dry. “What am I wearing right now?” “Hm?” Sirius cranes his neck to get a better look at Remus through the double paned glass wall of his office, and finds him arranging his brightly colored pens in a single file line. He smiles. “Uh, yellow T-shirt.” “Close. A double-breasted custom tailored charcoal gray Armani suit.”

Now that a week has passed since that horrible ending of FTWD, how would you have liked Troy's story to be wrapped up?
Thanks for asking! I guess it’s gonna be a LONG one…
If I absolutely had to wrap his story, then I would’ve made him and Tracy leave the main group/PADRE behind. It’s hard for me to say that this season had any arcs, but the potential was there - Troy appears both stuck in his old ways and being perceived by other characters as the person he was 12 years ago, but during the season he realizes that he’s already changed a long time ago and lets go of some things and ideas that he has been carrying around like deadweight.
I saw a lot of people say that Troy is irredeemable because he ‘killed’ Alicia, but for Tracy to believe the lie about being her kid, that must’ve happened ~8 years ago very shortly after Serena’s death. A much younger Troy who haven’t really experienced fatherhood yet lashing out in grief is very different from this idea of current Troy seeking out Alicia in cold blood that some people seem to have.
We even have a parallel with Madison, who assumed that Nick has been dead for years and didn’t even look for him, finding out that Charlie killed him as a misguided 11yo, but still violently lashing out at her and sending Charlie to her death. Madison fully expected Charlie to die, and if that confrontation happened right after Nick’s death with no one around to act like her conscious, then I have to assume that she would’ve killed Charlie. I mean, Madison isn’t above killing kids…
So, I would’ve brought more attention to when ‘killing’ Alicia must’ve happened and how that parallels Madison while also highlighting what Troy didn’t have back then - time to process and a support system to stop him like Victor and Daniel tried with Madison. Otherwise, that’s just hypocrisy. Which this season was full of, but it went completely unaddressed.
Every ‘good’ character was acting like they know Troy, when most of them saw him maybe once or knew him for a couple of weeks at best, but they’re very sure about the opinions they have on him, even tho 12 years have passed. They also act like his perception of those events isn’t correct, while their is.
It’s especially evident with Daniel acting like Troy has lied to Tracy about Ophelia, when he absolutely told her the truth. Ophelia did poison a lot of innocent men. As unfair the situation was for Walker and his people, what most ranchers were guilty of was peacfully living on the land that was still legally bought from the tribe, and then also trying to protect their home.
If they were somehow not innocent enough, then Nick was poisoned and almost died too, but Madison sure kept her mouth shut about that little detail while literally having Nick’s ashes on her. She, herself, beat Ophelia up for what Tracy says she did, but for some reason Daniel never gets challenged on rejecting the truth.
Let’s not forget that the scene leads to Strand realizing that Daniel is only there because he wants to hurt Troy for causing Ophelia’s death by killing Tracy, and then Daniel and Madison actually try to kill Tracy in an unnecessary cruel way only to be stopped by Strand. Seems like a very weird thing to not explore more, when Troy’s main sin is ‘killing’ their daughters. These people are not better than Troy, in many ways they are worse, so, if they deserve another chance and to go their separate ways than so does he.
Troy was really on his best behavior this season. He is constantly accused of being the worst, but his actions don’t support it. He takes over the hotel with no casualties, he doesn’t intend to kill Charlie, her offers to take over PADRE peacefully, he refuses to side with Crane, he saves Madison - he’s not killing anyone just because he can, and is ready to avoid all casualties.
I’ve seen people treating Troy killing Luciana’s men as some kind of proof that he didn’t change, but they had an option to just leave the place before Troy even came. Troy was there only because his kidnapped child sent a distressed call from that location. He was wiling to resolve that peacefully too, but was forced into a shootout by men that were either directly responsible for kidnapping Tracy or guilty by association, men that were also getting in his way of saving Tracy from being killed by Madison and Daniel. He wasn’t after these men, as they for some reason assumed.
Troy was not in the wrong in that situation and, overall, he proved every character that badmouthed him wrong with his actions. Charlie says that Troy only cares about hurting Madison and not PADRE? Troy saves her life and proves that safety of his daughter (the reason he wanted PADRE) is more important. Daniel says that Troy is a lier? But what he told Tracy about Ophelia was true, and he either confesses about other stuff or lies to protect his child. Strand acts like Tracy needs to be rescued from Troy? Troy is literally the best parent this show had. And so on.
It boggles my mind that the show is either unaware that Troy’s words and his actions are so different or is aware, but unwilling to do anything with it. Kinda like it does absolutely nothing to call out other characters (baby snatchers, attempted child murderers, killers for hire, ex tyrants and such) on their hypocrisy when judging Troy. So, going back to the original question, I would address all that and make all the characters realize how similar they are, and that they have no ground to judge each other. That the only good thing they can do is go their separate ways, as they seem to be much better people when they are not in close proximity.
Oh, and if I’m not allowed to keep Serene ‘alive’ long enough to have Troy put her out of her misery and him and Tracy burry her together, then I would give him more time to process her ‘death’. I think she serves as a perfect symbol of Troy clinging to things that are no longer there, his ‘deadweight’. He seems to blame Alicia and Madison for her death, but he went from someone who ‘killed’ Alicia out of grief to someone who saves Madison. Allow him to meaningfully burry his past and that be proof of his change and the fact that his revenge quest is over.
ALTERNATIVELY
If I don’t actually have to finish Troy’s story, then I would retcon the shit out of this season with one simple fix - unreliable narration from a severely traumatized 8yo girl.
You saw Madison push a dull ass object through Troy as if he’s made out of dough? No, you didn’t! Tracy’s mind exaggerated that wound. You saw Troy dead on the ground? No, you didn’t, because Tracy already ran away, and that’s her mind filling the blanks. You saw a dozen adults standing there doing absolutely nothing after she ran away? No, they all ran after her and left injured Troy behind to be rescued by his men, who should be in the area anyway.
You saw walker!Troy? Well, that being a false memory child mind came up with to cope with trauma makes far more sense than an 8yo, who got easily overwhelmed by walkers multiple times before, spending an entire night searching through the remains of a 5000 horde that was just in the area, in the dark, and actually finding her dad, who went in some random direction, without being eaten alive.
Then her digging a grave for a 6’1 man in the ground that was so frozen that it could hold a horde, with her bare hands too. Then easily finding her way back to Madison, who got saved from a gunshot by a tiny soft silver necklace, and digging her out from under rubble. Then an 8yo knowing some ‘field medicine’ that allows you to heal chronic lung issues with zero oxygen tanks and such.
None of these things make sense and the show would be better, if they will get retconned as Tracy running away too early to see Troy die, shooting Madison (but the bullet only grazing her, which is something Tracy could actually know how to deal with later) or just knocking her out and then spending the night crying holed up somewhere close while her mind makes these fixes to allow her to go back and help the only adult she has to rely on for survival.
Then I would continue Troy’s story, where he first gets better physically and mentally, maybe finds a new community of interesting characters (that isn’t just 13 ‘fanatic’ men, but also a little boy, so, do Troy’s men have families with them that we never see? What happened to the boy? Why even add a boy, when a grown ass man could’ve told us that Tracy is gone…) before going to find his daughter who won’t even be with Madison and Alicia at that point (because I don’t want to see them again) who left Tracy with whatever first community they found (good for her).
That’s my pitch for the first 2 seasons of a Troy spinoff.

Get Ready! Here I Come! A Wally Analysis
Tumblr media
Oh Wally, one of my favorite rivals and Hoenn Characters! He's definitely one of the many characters from Hoenn that was definitely benefited by the ORAS storyline adding much needed character development and screen time.
Wally as a character broke a lot of molds for his introduction in gen 3. He's the first rival to not be the first battle or get one of the main starters! He's also the first rival to be a secondary rival (as Brendan/May are the first) but ultimately become the primary rival as Brendan/May pretty much give up on keeping up with the player by Lilycove.
Let's start with Wally's name, in English Wally is derived from "Wallflower" which is a term for people who may come off as either shy, awkward and/or introverted. In Japanese, his name is Mitsuru which can mean "to be frail" or a reference to the crane ("tsuru") which would then reference the thousand origami cranes that are often given to people who are seriously ill. Indeed a lot of the names he has across localizations seem to reference his him either being shy or frail.
Which makes sense given that when we first meet him he's is quite sickly and rather shy (the shyness is much more prominent in his animations in ORAS). Based on what we know about his condition (needing more fresh air and it improving as he was able to travel more) it's likely he had asthma, which can indeed improve as you grow older (provided it doesn't come back, like mine did). Wally's introduction being the catching tutorial is probably one of the best of the series simply because it involves the growth of a new character instead of just it showing the player (who most likely already knows how to catch Pokemon). It's really nice to see Wally so excited about catching his first Pokemon. This is magnified by the fact that when you look at his room it's filled with a lot of textbooks on how to catch Pokemon, showing this was a major dream for Wally for the longest time and now he's finally getting a chance to fulfill said dream. Wally's introduction is probably my favorite of any rival we've had in the series just because of how sweet it is and how creative they were by using his introduction as a tutorial.
Now let's step back for a second and look at Wally's team. His signature Pokemon is the Ralts line with him evolving the Ralts he caught in the capture tutorial into a Gardevoir in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and Gallade in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Both Gardevoir and Gallade evoke guardian angel and knight vibes with their Pokedex entries and appearances. You would think this would mean that Wally is a guardian/protector…but really this involves Wally being the one needing protecting. Obviously as the trainer Wally does take care of his Pokemon, but given his sickness he relies on his Pokemon. IN the first match we have against him in Mauville City, his Ralts has Teleport, which is a great move to quickly get you back to the last Pokemon center. Perfect for someone who might get sick and need to leave an area immediately
Indeed Wally makes multiple mentions to relying on his Pokemon
"I'm always relying on Gallade. This is my chance to help him out for a change." <- Serena's Dessert Party Story Event "When I was younger, I wasn't able to get outside much… Spending time with Pokémon helped me get better." <- Random Conversation in Pokemon Center in Pokemon Masters Ex
It's really cool to see this play out with a major NPC as most oftentimes in the game we don't really seeing humans actively needing help from Pokemon unless they are minor NPCs
Tumblr media
But then let's look at the rest of his team when he fights you at Victory Road. It consists of a Delcatty, Magneton, Roselia, Altaria and the Gallade(ORAS)/Gardevoir(RSE). What's interesting to note is that outside of his starter most of his Pokemon's base forms can be found near Verdanturf. Skitty can be found Route 116 (on the other side of Rusturf Tunnel which connects Rustboro and Verdanturf). Roselia is found on Route 117 (connecting Verdanturf to Mauville City. Magnemite can be found in New Mauville but also in horde battles on Hoenn Route 110 (which is just underneath Cycling Road which is near Mauville). Swablu is the mon that's found farthest away on Routes 114/115 which are close to Meteor Falls (easier to get to via Fallarbor Town but you can go up through Rustboro City).
This is interesting to note because it gives the impression that Wally stayed closed to his Uncle's House in Verdanturf when initially catching and training Pokemon. Presumably this is so one he can boost up his confidence and two to help build his stamina as the air there is a little cleaner and would help improve his respiratory condition. This is something I really like about Wally in the fact that he has far more humble beginnings compared to many rivals who often get traditional starters and come from rather privileged families. I feel like he's more emblematic of what the average trainer would go through normally in the Pokemon world, which makes his true strength later on that much more impressive.
Now we don't see Wally much in our Gen 3 playthroughs and some players express frustration about that because we're used to having rivals challenge us on a more constant basis. But actually makes sense given this line of dialogue
"I lost to you, , but I'm not feeling down anymore. Because I have a new purpose in life. Together with my Ralts, I'm going to challenge Pokémon Gyms and become a great Trainer. Please watch me, . I'm going to be stronger than you. When I do, I'm going to challenge you to another battle." -At his Aunt and Uncle's house in Verdanturf
He expresses the desire to challenge you again, but he wants to build up strength before hand. Again subverting the rivals before him (even Brendan/May in the same game until Lilycove where they give up) he doesn't see himself as better/more experienced. So his loss doesn't affect him the same way. He knows he has a ways to go and decides he wants to focus on building himself up before challenging you again. And going back to his team composition he really wants to be sure he's prepared so he sticks to a small region of traveling before branching out. Which no doubt helps him conquer the gyms at a blistering rate. You'll notice around through the game that if you check the gym statues his name actually appears first on gyms. Because like Blue and Silver he ends up outpacing you. In ORAS the News portion of the Pokenav actually comments on a trainer who is conquering the gyms at a blistering pace which we'll later find out is him
"Oh, ! I…I left my uncle's place in Verdanturf without telling anyone. I wonder if he's furious with me… , you understand how I feel, don't you?" <- Wally in Emerald on the Match Call after you beat Flannery
This is a line that stuck out to me even as a kid playing Emerald on GBA SP. He actually snuck out in order to continue training his Pokemon. But he feels bad for doing it because on some level he understands that his family is just trying to look out for his health. But also he still wants to make his dreams come true even if it upsets them. It's also really nice touch in Emerald when he does call you because it shows he really considers you to be a friend even though you guys don't see each other much (one of the many reasons I wish we would've gotten Delta Emerald just to keep the Match Calls because they provide a lot of insight to the Hoenn cast, among other things).
In ORAS at least it seems to be less of a sneak out thing as we do see him in Petalburg after defeating Norman and he does get his dad's encouragement to continue traveling, with both Norman and his dad remarking on our strength as we head on out.
We don't see Wally again until Victory Road where he surprises with a battle and in ORAS giving us one of the best themes of a Pokemon character EVER in my opinion. Since Hoenn was my introduction to the Pokemon main-series games and Wally was really my first true rival of the series hearing the epic music and seeing the visual was amazing. It brought a tear my eye, honestly. Also just seeing how his animation in ORAS changes where our first battle he has a very timid look, but on Victory Road he challenges us with a more confident stance showing how much he has grown. And when he loses he expresses frustration.
We see him again in ORAS in the Delta Episode being harassed by either Courtney or Matt for his Key Stone after he already had his stolen by Zinnia which he'll eventually get back. But when we see him at the Battle Resort we notice something a bit different about him. He seems to be a little bit more impatient, running so fast he knocks the Team Aqua/Magma admins aside. He does apologize to them afterwards, but it's definitely a change from what we've seen of him thus far. And then after defeating him the first time at the Battle Resort we get treated to this line"I knew my team makeup was still off. Then…I guess I need to take this guy out. No, if I do that, I'll be wide open for… Hmm… Then if I replace this move here… Yeah… Yeah, that should do it! Oh! Excuse me! I couldn't help myself! But you're just as brilliant in battle as ever, <player>! Still, don't you count on me just losing to you forever. I've met a lot of people who have helped me grow since coming to the Battle Resort, and it has reminded me all over again how much fun it is to really go all out in battle! Thanks again, <player>! Let's battle again sometime!"
This is a bit concerning. Now to be fair other trainers who swap out Pokemon. He's not the first or the last. But you can kind of tell how serious he's become about trying to win. When we battle him he drops his Delcatty and Altaria for Talonflame, Azumarill and Garchomp with rather strategic movesets.
And then we get to Pokemon Masters. Specifically the Melancholy Wally event where he's paired up with a shiny Gardevoir. He really wants to team up with Diantha who refuses because she says he "lacks something". Which he takes to mean as strength when she really meant how he and his partner shine with their bond. And as we see throughout the event he is actually really prioritizing winning and technical battle stuff over just bonding with his Gardevoir, causing it to disappear. Which makes him really upset leading to this heartbreaking line "Is it because I'm weak? Do you not like battling with me anymore?"
We see Wally does have a bit of a complex, no doubt influenced by him being a sick shy child who was a little overprotected by his family. But then when he sees Noland teaching others how to battle he remembers something… "Although he lost the battle...he looks so happy..."It's all coming back to me...I was once like him...And it was so much fun. But now, all I think about is winning or losing...And I'm not enjoying Pokémon battles like I used to... ... ... ...Now that I think about it, when was the last time I had fun with Gardevoir? I should apologize...I was horrible to Gardevoir!"
He realizes where's he gone wrong. He's too focused on the outcome of the battle and forgetting the most important thing is about maintaining your bond with your Pokemon. And this again goes back to that post-defeat quote at the Battle Resort. When he started to care more about winning and optimizing tactics over bonding with his Pokemon.
Tumblr media
With the recent Galar Neo Champions promos people have been joking about how he was paired with the jerk rival Blue, Silver and Bede. When you look at the Melancholy Wally event and his dialogue at the Battle Resort, you realize this was intentional. Because while he may not tease or put down others, he is very much falling into the "jerk rival trap" of caring more about strength over just enjoying time with their Pokemon. Luckily on Pasio he seems to be just like Blue, Silver, and Bede, overcoming that pitfall. This is something I really appreciate about Wally because it's nice to see the friendly rivals fall into bad-Pokemon training habits. Just because you're not strutting around thinking that you're the best thing since slice bread doesn't mean you can't have nasty traits or habits that need to be broken and I kind of wish they did that more often because it's rare to see.
But yeah Wally's a super interesting character who proves you don't need to have a lot of screen time to make a big impact.

Desert Encounters
After rescuing the mayor, the builder wants some peace and quiet.  She goes out to the desert to camp for the night as a get away.  While there, she has an unexpected encounter.
Serena could not fathom what had driven her to want to camp out in Logan's gang's old base.  Maybe it was a desperate  need to just get. away.  From everything.  Sandrock was lovely, but it sometimes felt so small.  No matter how far up or out or around she went on the mesa, it felt like the town was still right there.  Whenever she went to bed, there was the sound of the machines clanking and gurgling as they worked through the night, as well as her animals.  Serena just wanted some quiet.  After she, Justice and Unsuur had cleared out the cave of creatures and Logan's crew,  Serena had stayed behind to gather materials and scrap from around the cave.
There had been an overwhelming sense of quiet and peace as she worked alone in the cool rock walls.  Maybe it was that quiet that had driven her to trek back out to the cave with her backpack full of camping gear.  The machines had all been shut down, sandwall raised, and Elsie was coming over to care for Flop Mop, Chick, A, and Dee. Although Serena wanted some peace and quiet, she also wasn't stupid and had left a note on both her workbench and dining room table listing where she was going and when she planned to be back in case anything happened.
For now, the Yakmel transport had let her off at the furthest stop it had.  It was still a trek to the central camp cave itself though.  When she got back to the cave, Serena was relieved to see none of the desert animals had made their way back to the cave yet.  She meandered her way back to the main cavern, and started setting up camp.  She unrolled the bedroll and piled on extra blankets.  Rummaging around the cave yielded plenty of scrap wood from crates and various materials for a camp fire.  One of the most surprising things about moving to Sandrock was how cold it got at night, considering it was a desert and she spent most of her days baking in the sun.  At night, however, Serena was burrowed under a pile of blankets.
Once camp was set up, Serena pulled out the sandwich dinner she'd packed for the evening and quickly polished it off.  Dusting off any crumbs, she stood up and headed back to the entrance of the cave.  The sun had fully set by now and the stars were out in full force.  The sight of the night sky was awe inspiring.  In Serena's home city, there were too many lights to properly see the stars. Even in Sandrock, there were enough streetlights on throughout the eventing that the stars were still somewhat obscured.  However, out in the Eufala, there was nothing to dim their shine.  The stars were numerous and thick, almost like a sea.  Serena reached up to the seemingly close enough to touch stars, but as she did, they seemed to move farther away.  There was a metaphor in there somewhere if she cared enough to look.
To save her neck from craning up to stare, Serena laid down on the still barely warm sand.  For the first time in months, maybe even a year, on her back starting at the the stars, Serena felt an urge to paint.  Huh.  Who knew all it would take was the vast infinity and wonder of the universe to return that creative spark.  She lost track of time staring up at the stars, letting the peace and silence wash over her and basked in the serenity of the moment.  Eventually, it got too cold to be outside, so she made her way back into the caves.  Serena stoked the fire, checked there was plenty of scrap wood gathered, then settled into her bedroll to sleep.
------
Something woke Serena up, but she didn't know what.  Thinking it might be one of the creatures from earlier, her hands drifted to the daggers next the bedroll and tightened around the handles.  A clatter of rocks sounded very nearby.  Serena craned her neck trying to look towards the sound without moving so as not to draw attention to herself.  Serena strained her ears, and could just make out the distinct sound of footsteps.  The her heartbeat roared in her ears, drowning out the sound of footsteps.  Trying not to panic, Serena tried to figure out who it might be.  Best case scenario, Justice or Unsuur had come out after her after finding one of the notes.  Worst case scenario, well...
As Serena lay still, heart racing, a figure stepped into the dim light of the fire.  The light reflected off pale, almost white blond hair, and a very distinctive horned hat was silhouetted by its light.  Serena's breathe caught in her throat as she realized it was, indeed, Logan.  Her pulse skyrocketed, hands turning clammy around the dagger in her grip.  Even with fear induced adrenaline coursing through her veins, Serena couldn't deny that a small part of her was curious about Logan, even excited at the idea of maybe getting to talk to him.  Ever since poking around town with Elsie, Serena was convinced there was more to the Logan thing than people would realized, or were admitting to.  Maybe this could bring some answers.  Or get you killed, a small voice of reason piped up.  Serena ignored that voice.  If he wanted her dead, it would have have made a lot more sense to have already killed her, she reasoned. "Pretending to be asleep works a lot better when you aren't staring at someone," Logan said.
Serena startled so violently one of her daggers went clattering across the rocks and sand.  Realizing the jig was up, Serena sat up and leaned forward to retrieve her dagger.  She could feel Logan's gaze on her the whole time.  Unbidden, the memory of Logan's train heist flew to the forefront of Serena's mind.  For some reason, her mind dwelled on the moment when they'd locked eyes.  She'd never seen someone with such bright blue eyes before.  Now, knowing he was watching her, she could almost picture those eyes again.
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
Serena gestured to the fire, bedroll, and backpack, "Camping.  What are you doing here?"  Immediately she wanted to take back the question.  He was probably collecting everything she had forced him to leave in his hasty exit.
"Making sure nothing got left behind," he said, confirming her thoughts. Serena nodded, at a loss for what to say or do now.  Logan made the next move for her by plopping down next to the fire, at a distance Serena considered dangerously close.  He said,
"Hell of a place to camp." "It's quiet." Logan tilted his head quizzically, and Serena continued,
"I dunno, Sandrock is so small you know?  No matter where you go, someone is always around, or within eyesight.  Most of the time it's fine, right?  But recently I've just felt...smothered."  She shrugged, "After the whole, uh-"
Serena tried to think of a way to say 'Rescuing the mayor you kidnapped,' in a way that wasn't.  Ya know.  That.  She finally settled on,
"After the incident here the other day, I stayed behind to collect some resources and materials while the Civil Corps took the mayor back to town," Logan nodded as though to say he was still listening.  Serena went on,
"It's the most peaceful I've felt in weeks, so I decided to come back and spend the night here to just get away for a bit.  So, yeah..." she trailed off.  She was wondering why she was sharing this with Logan of all people.  Maybe it was because he was a stranger, maybe because she didn't have to see him every day.  Maybe she just needed someone to talk to.
"Makes sense," was all Logan said.  Silence descended and Serena was trying to think of what to say or do next when Logan suddenly started coughing violently.  Deep, hacking coughs that seemed to be settled in his chest.
"Are you okay?" Serena asked, genuinely concerned.  The cough sounded pretty bad.  Her mind flashed back to what she, Mian, and Elsie had learned about how Logan's father died.  when they were doing their sleuthing Logan.  Had he been poisoned recently too?  Her heart dropped unexpectedly at the thought.
"Yeah, just all the sand and dust," he said, waving his hand at the cave around them.
Serena squinted at him, "That sounds worse than a, 'just some sand and dust' cough."
Logan lifted a shoulder, "Had a cold a while back.  Haven't been able to shake the cough since."
Unexpected relief washed over her.  He wasn't poisoned, just a cold.  Suddenly, she remembered the vial Fang had given her yesterday at his biweekly medicinal testing.
"I've got something for that, hang on."  Serena reached over to the belt pouch she'd taken off before bed and rummaged in the pocket she kept medicines in.  Vials clanked against each other until she found the right one.  Serena held it out to Logan, who regarded it with suspicion and skepticism.  "Here, it's cold medicine."
Logan raised his eyebrows.
Serena rolled her eyes, "It's from Fang, I tested it yesterday.  Totally safe and fine, this go around."
"You realize that makes me trust it less, right?" "Are you gonna take it or not?" Logan hesitated, weighing something to himself before taking the vial.  "How much of this do I take?" "Whole thing."
He eyed the vial suspiciously before shrugging and downing the whole thing.  Serena had no idea how he managed to do that while leaving the mask in place over his face, but it was impressive.  Logan handed the empty vial back over.  He was regarding Serena with an odd look.  Finally, he said,
"What do you mean you 'tested it' for Fang?" his voice was oddly tight.  It reminded Serena of when she tried to keep her teeth from chattering.  It suddenly dawned on her with the way he was curled close to the fire that he was probably freezing.  The clothes Logan had on were the same ones she'd seen him in before with the mayor, which while they seemed well-suited for the desert day heat, didn't seem to offer any protection against the cold.
Outlaw or not, Logan was cold and recovering from being sick.  Right now, Logan didn't seem frightening or evil, or any of the things the Sandrockers said about him.  He just seemed like an exhausted young man, desperately trying to get warm.  Strangely enough, her heart went out to him.  Serena had always been a sucker for lost causes with a maternal instinct that liked to flare at the strangest of times.  Reaching into her backpack for one of the extra blankets packed there, she responded,
"Wednesdays and Fridays Fang has different concoctions out to try.  Sometimes they're awesome and work super well like that one - hah!" -Serena held up the blanket she'd been fishing for triumphantly- "and sometimes they temporarily turn my skin blue.  Or make me gassy," she pulled a face, "That was not a fun afternoon, but at least it was over quickly."  Serena stood up and walked over towards Logan with the extra blanket in hand.
He started at the movement and eyed her warily as she came closer.  As she got within a couple feet of him, her rational brain caught up with instinct brain.  Instinct brain had said cold person, drape blanket around and burrito.  Rational brain was catching up and realizing this might not be the best idea when it came to a wanted outlaw.  Well, it was too late now.  Heart in her throat, Serena closed the remaining distance, trying to ignore Logan's stare threatening to burn holes in her.  Somehow, he'd managed to tense up even more; hand closer to the gun at his waist.  Doing her best to ignore that small detail, Serena shook out the blanket from it's careful folding and draped it over his shoulders.  Even with the hat and mask, shock was plain as day on Logan's face.
"What's this about?" he asked, voice strangely hoarse.
She shrugged, "You looked cold," and retreated back to her bedroll, picking up one of her mom's quilts to wrap up with as she sat down closer to the fire and Logan.
Who was now staring at the fire and looking anywhere but Serena's direction, which was odd considering he hadn't taken un-trusting eyes off her this whole time.  Pretending like nothing had changed with her giving him the blanket, she continued on about her 'drug testing,'
"I think the worst was some weird red swill.  Knocked me out for an hour.  I mean, not literally, I was just completely exhausted and wiped."
Logan resumed staring at her again, "Why on earth would you test out that kind of stuff?"
"Cause when it works, it's fantastic.  Pros outweigh the cons," she shrugged.
"You're insane."
"Eh, maybe."  Serena reached over to her pile of scrap and grabbed a couple more wooden planks to add onto the fire.
"But Fang's a solid guy and his heart's in the right place.  He really does  want to help people.  Anything that works he gives me a copy of the recipe and a free sample.  As far as business people in Sandrock go, he's not too bad.  Unlike other people I can think of," her tone turned bitter at the end thinking of Yan and his actions.
Logan tilted his head, "Seems like you've got a particular person in mind."  Serena sat up on her heels and clapped her hands together so fast Logan started and shuffled back slightly,
"SO, Yan is a bitch ass mother fucker and I should have let Rocky kick his teeth in my first day in Sandrock," Weeks of pent up anger and frustration about all the bullshit Yan had pulled since her arrival burst forth in a tirade.  Logan listened wide-eyed, still leaning away ever so slightly.  As the rant continued, he seemed to recover and settled in for the long haul.
Serena almost felt bad for Logan; he couldn't' possibly have known the can of worms he was opening, but she also didn't care.  Bad gas travels fast in a small town, and no one else seemed to share her deep seated loathing of Yan.  There were months of pent up frustration and anger that finally had an outlet, and by Peach she was going to use it.
"So then, he has me and Mi-an finish his commission, right?  Which fine, whatever, as long as I get paid, I guess.  BUT THEN, this FUCKING ASSHOLE didn't tell us we'd need this one particular manual for it.  Does he give it to us like a decent human being would if you're finishing their work? Nooooooo, we have to pay him for it."
She continued venting her frustrations about the man's complete and utter lack of willingness to contribute to any and every town disaster and crises that had happened since her arrival to Sandrock, and overall attitude in general.
"And like, Mi-an tries to help Owen out right?  Cause she's a decent fucking person, but Yan has to be an asshole and ruin that too," with the heaviest air quotes and a flood of sarcasm, Serena went on, " 'I'm not running a charity shop here,' is all he has to say.  You're right, what you're running, Yan, is an extortion racket!" Serena slumped back down, feeling the winds of anger that had been filling her sails die down.
"Huh," Logan said.  "I kinda knew he was a shiester, but I didn't realize he was that much of one."
"I hate him," Serena said passionately.  "I think he's the only person I've ever hated."
Logan curled in on himself, pulling the blanket around him more tightly, "I'm sure he's not the only one."
Serena shook her head, "Nope, I cannot think of a single person I've ever felt this negatively about."
"Stop," he said, voice low, "Just- you don't have to lie, okay?  Or be scared to say it or anything.  Trust me, I understand."
"Understand what?" Serena asked, baffled.
"Why you hate me."
Serena frowned.  Did she hate Logan?  Hate didn't seem like the right word.  She'd never felt the rising tide of rage around him or at the mere mention of his name the way she did Yan.  If she thought about it, usually when people had brought up Logan what she'd felt was curiosity and confusion.  He had an end game, that much was obvious and it drove her nuts to have no idea what it was.
Especially after the sleuthing adventure with Elsie and Mi-an, Serena had more questions than ever.  Even when the water tower was blown up, Serena hadn't been able to muster up the anger and disappointment the rest of the town had, only puzzlement.  Yeah he'd robbed trains and stuff, but that was the first act he'd taken that really seemed to put people's lives at risk.  And even then, people could have just left.
"I don't hate you," Serena said decisively.
Logan's head whipped up to look at her, eyes brimming with questions. Pulling her own blanket tighter, Serena picked up a scrap of wood and began tracing shapes in the sand, unable to look at him,
"I don't hate you," she repeated, "What I feel about you is...confusion.  I don't understand you.  I don't know why you're doing what you're doing, and I don't like that it causes my friends grief."  Serena sighed, "But I also think....I think you have a reason." She finally looked up and met Logan's eyes.  They were brimming with emotion as she went on,
"I can't fathom as to what that reason might be.  But I think- I don't know, it seems important.  Like," she twisted her free hand in the air looking for words, "It's like there's some bigger picture.  It's almost, almost like a puzzle?"
Serena tilted her head thinking for a moment.  Logan sat silently, letting her gather the thoughts.
"Yeah, it's like a puzzle.  I know there's a bigger picture, and I can tell that all of these things are part of something else," her voice was stronger as the analogy took firmer shape, "But I don't have the box.  I don't have the box to know what the final thing is supposed to look like."  She pointed at Logan, "You, on the other hand, have the box and know what the picture is supposed to look like," he opened his mouth to say something, but Serena held up a hand, "I'm not going to ask you what the box picture looks like.  I don't want to know.  Plausible deniability and all that, right?"
Serena trailed off, staring into the distance.  Her thoughts were unfinished, there was something else to say, but she couldn't for the life of her order the thoughts swirling through her head enough to tease it out.  Once again, Logan sat silently, as though sensing there was more to be said.  Finally, the thoughts coalesced enough for Serena to pull out her final point,
"I want to see the end game, what the puzzle ends up looking like.  I'm just- I don't know what it will cost.  Who all might get hurt along the way," Serena pulled her knees to her chest and wrapped the blanket around them.  "And that, that scares me," she said in a small voice and turned to look at Logan.  "I don't scare easy."
He gave a wry grin, "Oh I'm aware.  Not many people Civil Corps members would chase after an outlaw into the desert, let alone builders."  The grin quickly vanished as he looked down at his hands, "It'll be worth it, it has to be," he almost whispered.  Logan looked back up at Serena, "I'm sorry.  It- I-," he sighed, "This isn't what I wanted.  But it has to be done."
Serena nodded, "I understand."  Silence fell between the two, both lost in their own thoughts.  Eventually, Serena couldn't hold back the yawns.  Logan seemed to notice and said,
"I should be going."  He stood up and made to give the blanket back, but Serena shook her head,
"Keep it, I have more. And before you go-" she reached into her medicine pouch and pulled out a couple extra vials of cold medicine, "take these.  I can get more," she added hastily when it looked like Logan was going to argue.  He shrugged, took the vials, and started walking back out of the cave the way he'd come.
"Logan!" Serena called out.
He turned around, "Yeah?"
"Take care of yourself, okay?"
Logan chuckled, "Sure thing builder, you too."
"Serena," she said.  "My name's Serena."
"Take care, Serena.  And thank you.  For everything."
A shiver went down her spine hearing Logan say her name.  Serena shoved that reaction very firmly into a box and slammed the lid shut.  To distract herself, Serena rearranged her bedroll and blankets before burrowing into them.  The way Logan said, 'everything' made her think there was a thanks in there for more than just the blanket and medicine.  Thanks for what?  Talking to him?  Not hating him?  Seeing his side in a weird twisted way?  Head swirling in a jumbled mess from her meeting with Logan, Serena stared at the fire until sleep overtook her.
