Hello everyone!
My name is Melon! Any pronouns is fine with me. Most of you newer followers know me because of my TMNT fanfic series about the old grumpy peepaw. Since I'm starting to do more projects, I think I should finally get around to making one of these pin posts. Help organize everything. These are going to be my NON-COLLAB/NON ONE-SHOT works:
TMNT Works:
The Last Ronin Becomes a Discord Admin - The Last Ronin lives and discovers a Discord server with a bunch of other turtles! (03/12/Rise/The Last Ronin Crossover)
Sky Guardians - Magical Girls AU. But also... something else as well. [It's reincarnation] (2012)
Wedding Bells and Magic Portals - A Capritello wedding is interrupted by a giant purple portal in the sky. (12/Rise Crossover) completed
Other Crossover Works:
Rubies and Emeralds - Team RWBY and the turtles (Team LMRD) interact on an instant messaging platform. "Two groups of color coded teens get traumatized, but at least they have each other." (RWBY/TMNT 12) hiatus
Little Red (endearment) - Pre Vol. 9 Ruby falls into Gotham instead of the Ever After (RWBY/DC) hiatus
Fódlan Girl from Thedas - Byleth is from Thedas. That's it, that's the premise. She also becomes The Inquisitor, ig (Dragon Age/FE3H) hiatus

OH BOY I need some AIR after playing Cloutchase Vol 2!!!!
Time for the customary screenshot dump! Spoilers under the cut!
But first, some spoiler-free teases to further encourage you to play the game yourself first!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aight here we go
Hrrrrrrrrrrrrgh I started with Amino and then had to wash it down with Discord cause oof the cringe flashbacks to middle school
Tumblr media
They really went all out on the accuracy didn't they. It just like me fr (derogatory) (inaccurate)
Tumblr media
We need to talk about this split second of dialogue btw- I caught it just in time oh my god WHAT- they should kiss I think
Tumblr media
I played this with a friend actually and she gave Kik a Beetlejuice voice and it was amazing. My friend did all the voices actually and I did the narration and she was great and accurate it was a real fun experience. I've never even heard of Kik before this but she HAD and knew what to do XD
Tumblr media
THE FREAKIN WARRIOR CATS ROLEPLAY. I know EXACTLY how it feels to be dragged into a WCRP when you've never read the books or know anything about the series, more middle school trauma for you there
Tumblr media
Amino's route was positively perfect I have no notes I am going insane I am going feral I need therapy I need a monkey onesie-
Moving on, Muffy was in Discord's route! That was so neat to see! Also the crypto ending was so funny look at this:
Tumblr media
We also need to talk about Twitter X. Just look at him
Tumblr media
Amazing. Perfection. He is disgusted with us, as he should be
Tumblr media
Ok in regards to actual Discord, I freakin love him. Again, I was playing this game with a friend, and she said his trans experience was so relatable to her. Then I spoke with another friend and he said the same thing. We all agree he's very gender looking, even tho two of us are femme XD
Tumblr media
When we finished the Good Ending my friend said that Discord's feminine persona looked a lot more fake than initially thought now that we knew the truth, and that's honestly great character building. The maze was such an interesting way to get to know Discord better too, even if all the mythology reference were askew lol
Tumblr media
I think both versions of Discord are incredibly cute and adorable but Masc Discord is my favorite cause he just looks so much more comfortable in his own skin if you know what I mean? Or maybe I'm just projecting idk
I've actually hit 12 photos already so idk why Tumblr wont stop me from adding more. Maybe it's different on desktop than mobile idk
Anyway I loved both routes and I wish I could gush about them more but I have a certain social experiment session in an hour (shoutout to the two people who actually read through my experiment tag) so I'll just leave it here
But gosh I loved these two they were amazing I want to play them again aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Tumblr media
LAST NOTE BUT THERE ARE ACTUALLY A PAIR OF CREEPY TWINS AT THE END OF THE SHINING HALLWAY BTW
Tumblr media
Calling it now it's Thesaurus.com and Dictionary.com (two of MY ocs that I haven't even DESIGNED yet ffffffffffff now that Webtoon's done I guess that's my next project)

Now, Mikako can’t help but wonder if what she feels is jealousy. Peppy and creative teenager Mikako wants nothing more than to make it as a fashion designer. But when she enters art school alongside her lifelong friend Tsutomu, she finds herself distracted by his sudden popularity and subsequent love life. Despite her feelings, Mikako forms a club with Tsutomu and her friends to sell their creations at local flea markets. 5. Biggest Disappointment? i haven't been disappointed much by any books. but i guess i was hoping to like the first two installments of the dead boy detectives series more than i did
6. Biggest Surprise? piranesi, by susanna clarke. from the (very) little i knew of it i thought it would be more abstract and confusing and although it was that at times, i got really into it after the first 1/4 of the book and ended up absolutely loving it!
7. Favorite New Author? ryoko kui. dungeon meshi was the first manga i ever read, i devoured (!) the series in two weeks and it took over my life. she changed the way i look at so many things, especially certain fantasy tropes and characters and her art style tickles my brain so goood
8. Newest Favorite Character? murderbot from the murderbot diaries series by martha wells. it's so funny and tragic and i would love to sit and watch trashy media with it any day
9. Newest Fictional Crush? heather after from waking hours i just need one chance please! ❤❤❤
💕Best Ship💕 disaster bisexual triad wu zetian/li shimin/gao yizhi from iron widow. more heroines should get two boyfriends who are also boyfriends with each other i think. for the culture
10. Book That Made You Cry? i don't think i cried but i came close at many points in the dungeon meshi series, especially the end
11. Book That Made You Happy? dungeon meshi world guide: the adventurer's bible, by ryoko kui. let's bring back world compendiums for fantasy books i love that shit so much! show me all the character lore and worldbuilding and "useless" deatails you could't fit into the main story!
12. Favorite Book Adaptation You Saw This Year? for adaptations of books i have actually read, dungeon meshi (shocker). otherwise, interview with the vampire (s2 was so good it rewired my brain)
13. Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year? i don't write reviews but i did gush extensively about dungeon meshi on a discord server
14. Most Beautiful Cover? dungeon meshi: volume 11, by ryoko kui but honestly the all the covers for the series are works of art
15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? i still have 7 on my list for the reading challenge i'm doing. but i also intend to finally finish the discworld series

**********
Fiction-wise, this was actually a better year than you'd think from just eyeballing the list. The overall numbers are still below par, and there's too much shlocky formulaic mystery-series-type stuff; but there was a lot of real quality in there. I had real trouble deciding on my top two, and I ended up not giving either prize to a book by Jenna Moran writing at her normal level of quality, so that says something. There were a number of books that disappointed by not being amazing but that I'm still glad to have read (e.g. Summer in Orcus, The Hands of the Emperor). Even the shlocky formulaic stuff had more merit than you might expect, in many cases.
Serious contemplatively-emotional litfic is real good, at its best. Turns out.
Non-fiction-wise, this was a shitshow of unparalleled proportions. I read almost nothing, and what I read was uninspiring. (I started s number of things that I failed to finish, which didn't help.) I seriously considered making this a "no award" year. I am once again asking for your recommendations for really good, deeply-informative, blow-your-mind-open non-fiction.

OK finally watching oshi no ko anime, it turns out all i needed was to go outside for like an hour and im normal again
my thoughts under the cut (writing as i watch) (long) (lots of thoughts) (beautiful and true?) (manga reader) (don't read if anime only) (spoilers) (seriously) (i talk alot) (lots of thoughts)
at this point i've reread oshi no ko enough times that even if i didnt already know japanese i could probably make it without the subs SDJLF but its so cool to see lines and panels that im so familiar with brought to life!! i also liked goro's death scene, especially the way they used static and cut between shots. i keep on pulling out my physical copies of onk (well mostly vol 1) and pointing at my screen and the corresponding part of the book like
Tumblr media
2. AIIIII little known fact about me is that ai is genuinely my favorite character... WHICH SUCKS BECAUSE SHE DIES IN THE FIRST VOLUME. seriously we only ever get to see her after this when a. her name or demeanor is invoked by another character b. aqua has his numerous mental breakdowns or c. flashbacks (including but not limited to aqua's mental breakdowns). i am always down for ai content!!!
3. its so much easier to ignore the weird vaguely sexual stuff from their babyhood because i know the rest of the series is normal and cool and not into that sort of stuff👍
4. speaking of normal yayayay it's aqua back when he was actually normal and not "normal" :D like he is just a baby. do you think now that oshi no ko is popular people will get into internet arguments about whether you can ethically have aqua as your favorite character post-normalification. actually wait this may already have been happening in the dark depths of some discord server out there.. but i dont use discord so im blissfully unaware
5. OH i dont think ive seen all of the OG b komachi before? or at least not in high detail. epic!
6. infant ruby telling people on the internet "kys" before age 2... truly a model twitter user
7. not gonna lie i havent really ever liked the way babies are drawn here (including manga)... idk their heads just look way too big like adult heads drawn on toddler bodies then ""cutified"". but this is a personal gripe
8. do you think because of infantile amnesia the twins forgot about the whole pretending to be amaterasu moment. do you think miyako still remembers. can you imagine being the foster mother of two kids who you believe to be gods sent to earth. do you think she remembers that she was "charged by the gods with keeping ai's secret" and then aqua. you know.
9. imagine: you married the ceo of a mid production company because you want to date hot men. there are no hot men in sight. you have to watch over one of the idol's twin infant babies. they reveal to you that they are divine messengers of god and also they can speak normally. there are no hot men in sight. you tend to their every need because you don't want divine retribution. you explain the intricacies of the idol industry in detail every couple of days when they complain about the injustices of the world. there are no hot men in sight. you become their foster mom after they witness the traumatic death of their mother, whose secrets you where charged with keeping safe. at least 12 years pass. they never mention any of this again. you manage the idol group one of them is in. there are still no hot men in sight. your name is miyako. every day you wake up.
10. i like how gotanda gives his business card to a toddler. whats he gonna do, call you on his fisher price dial phone? well actually nevermind aqua is probably the only other toddler (alongside ruby) who could make use of a business card
11. KANAA LETS FUCKING GOOOOO but also nothing will ever top 'lick a lying snitch/flick a crying switch'...... nothing ever... :( also taking the opportunity now to say ive always found it hilarious she assumed 'aqua' is his stage name and not his actual legal name, that's how ridiculous it is DSKLFJ
12. sobbing at the ruby ai dance... dont even have that many words i just really like it.. do you guys think ai was thinking about her own mom [& abuse/lack of relationship thereof]? not even just in this scene but in her more serious moments when she's thinking about her kids it's like "i want to make millions so they can go to the nicest schools and have the nicest things" "i want my daughter to dance freely and happily and i will support her in this" which ig can also be excused as 'thats just what a normal parent wants' but idk i like taking into consideration her own past and lack of parental support when looking at the way she tries to raise her children (not that she exactly got a chance to, even while still alive)
13. also i realized at this point that ep 1 is like an hour long not just because of the whole 'we gotta make sure no one drops this before the reveal that shows what this story's actually gonna be about', but also because it would be kinda awkward to have cut any of these scenes out? or not like out completely but like from each other. like if we had ended ep 1 at for example where they do their silly baby dance and go twitter viral (chapter 5 aka the midpoint of vol 1). that wouldve been terrible. but we can't cut it any earlier, or any later. ai's death feels like the natural conclusion to this problem. also i can't really see much of the other sections being stretched out to fit a full episode length being done very well. having ep 1 be a full 90 minutes lets them be as long as they need to be, aka a 1:1 adaptation of the manga.
14. oh boy chapter 9 time
15. i don't have anything to say about ai's outlook that has not already been said but this is the scene that made her my favorite character. not being able to tell at what point your lies become reality.. not really knowing if you've ever loved or been loved truly because your entire concept of 'love' was based off insincerity necessary for survival.. and now not ever being given the chance to explore what 'real love' means to you. FUCK
16. aww i love all these little family moments they added! very cute ^_^
17. yayy go kids get traumatized ^_^ also for some reason i remember the stalker as having really light hair o-0 fascinating. i remembered his name though!! just like ai fr
18. speaking of hair i also did not realize saitou was blond i thought he had brown hair..
19. hey the bandana (? i forget the word) guy holding the ai fan sign during the news montage is from one of the intros to the vol 1 chapters where hes like 'oh yeah i wonder where those dancing babies are now'!
20. another part of that montage shows a house with a wii in it, which came out november 19 2006. characters are shown using twitter which started earlier that same year; it was a pretty popular website even in 2008, but the mobile app only became a thing in like 2010. i'm seeing a mix of flip phones and smart phones so this has gotta take place sometime around 2010. it's kinda difficult to tell exactly what age the twins are in the main story because like the first page of vol 2 has ruby listing her age as 14, but - and the proof is not at my finger tips rn - i swear to god they're like 16 at this point. i have legitimate reasons to believe this but i need to grab exact proof adding to that we also have 15 years of lies, which if im remembering right would be referring to the twins age? i was trying to logic out exactly what year oshi no ko takes place in even though i already know the answer is 'in the modern day' but anyway yeah i'll just finish my episode and move on
21. THE IPHONE RUBY IS HOLDNIG HAS A HEADPHONE JACK. i want so badly to say that's an iphone 4 but there's like a separation between that and the power button. i also dont have an iphone 4 with me so i cant check it irl :( but anyway the iphone 4 was released in 2010, meaning the evidence is piling up for this part of the story taking place some time around 2010. or maybe i'm looking too deeply into this and should go back to actually watching the episode.
22. this is reminding me i was gonna write a fic specifically about this time period where the twins go to therapy and have to adjust to life without ai, having miyako graduate from fake mom to actual mom, aqua faking being fully recovered from the incident so he'd be released from therapy (fic concept was inspired from him stating this in like vol 6), etc. i never did because i spent like 3 hours researching play therapy and never got anywhere with it.. but maybe...
23. THE KIDS HAVING TO WATCH HER FUNERAL THROUGH THE FUCKING CAR WINDOW... I'M GOING TO KILL MYSELF
24. YESS AQUA NORMALIFICATION COMPLETE
25. AM I INSANE OR IS THAT AKANE? HER HAIR COLOR IS THE SAME BUT IT'S SO SHORT
26. MEM!!!!
Tumblr media
27. AHHH POST CREDITS AI MAKING HER VIDEO FOR THE TWINS "i don't think i'll still be an idol by then" YEAH BUT AT WHAT COST 😭
FINAL THOUGHTS: i liked it alot ^_^ i dont really watch that much anime anymore (not that i watched an incredible amount before, but i am familiar with it) but i really liked this. i think they did a very good job of adapting the first volume! i know the rest of the episodes will be not-film length which does make me a bit sad because i think it would work out well, or at least not badly, if they were. it does also make me really excited for the future, seriously i will actually explode when i see the theater arc in full. cannot wait to see aqua mental breakdowns and ruby evil arc and and and and
the only thing i would've liked is if they could somehow have found a way to incorporate the pre-chapter intro scenes from the manga where they're talking about 15 years of lies, interviews with their pre-school teacher, etc. though both the pre-school teacher and the aforementioned bandana guy appear which may have been their way of doing it? like adding a fun detail for obsessives like myself to point at like 'my god it's those guys from exactly 2 panels in the manga'
tumblr ate my post and erased everything up to #2 while i was writing it and i was about to flip but it turns out that it automatically saves posts while youre writing them now and it was in my drafts safe and sound soooo crisis averted ^_^ anyway those were my thoughts on ep 1

What about the women in games?
Keogh (2021) discusses the Melbourne indie game scene: he explores the real-world games communities, using the Freeplay Independent Games Festival as an example (Keogh 2021, p. 215), and how the online games community is flourishing through servers such as discord (Keogh 2021, p. 214). Keogh (2021) also explains game development within Melbourne through two main lenses: the local versus global context, or as a money-making business versus it being for individual creative pleasure. An interesting point which Keogh (2021, pp. 213, 220) touches on but didn’t analyse was games male dominated culture and how it’s reflected within games and the games community.
As a result of the games industry being heavily dominated by male figures for an extended period of time, we continue to see the effects being reflected within video games themselves. According to Cruea and Park (2012, p. 47) video games are designed to dismiss female interest from the beginning. During the marketing process, popular video games are being framed as ‘unappealing or even stressful’ to women (Cruea & Park 2012, p. 47). In addition to this, features within video games are obviously designed for the male gaze by subverting women as sexual objects. Despite female characters in games being less common compared to male characters, when they do appear, they are shown with large breast and small waists (Cruea & Park 2012, p. 48). Unfortunately, for women, this is raising concerns about the influence of unrealistic body standards (Cruea & Park 2012, p. 46) and as a result of this type of gender representation, women in particular, are finding less enjoyment from playing video games (Cruea & Park 2012, p. 48).
Personally, I’m not an avid gamer; however, I have watched people play games. When I was younger, and Grand Theft Auto was trending, I remember watching family friends play and was shocked to notice that the main female representation was prostitutes and women in strip clubs.
Tumblr media
Not only are women sidelined within video games but it’s also common for women in the games community to feel unincluded. Cruea and Park (2012, p. 47) explain how male peers often assert dominance over female gamers by taking control over gaming equipment, hence not giving female gamers a chance to be apart of their communities. Also, due to the lack of female presence within the games industry for so many years, there has been a lack of support for fellow female gamers (Cruea & Park 2012, p. 47), meaning they have been outnumbered by the male gaming population. It has been expressed that female’s playing games for extended periods of time is a taboo subject, compared to it being a ‘male activity’ (Cruea & Park 2012, pp. 47-48). This ties into women feeling uncomfortable playing games in public because game mastery is usually only acceptable for the male community (Cruea & Park 2012, p. 47).
It’s clear that female representation within games and the games community has been unequal and unrealistic for many years; however, more currently, there is a noticeable rise in female gamers which may spark a new era for the gaming industry.

Thanks so much for the tag @daniclaytonsfuturewife and @sapphos-disciple!!
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 8 (ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome work!
I have done literally no original works (yaaay) so here are the favourite things I have worked on this year! Most of my fan works were done at the beginning of the year since school really bogged me down, but I’m getting back into it! More things on the way…
1) The Prodigal Daughter
I started writing this in December 2019 and finished up early this year. It was my first long fic (at just over 100k) and it might seem a bit dated reading back on it now but I’m still really proud of it and so grateful for all the love it received! Considering I wrote it before series 12 was completed… I think I was a bit prophetic.
Also here’s a pdf with illustrations :p
and the front + back covers I posted
2) The Thirteenth Doctor Fanzine Vol. II piece
I went all in with this one as my first fanzine contribution and it’s the largest piece I’ve created to date. Very proud of how it turned out and so grateful to be featured alongside so many incredible artists and writers!
3) Cranking out a series of fics during S12
(This one is cheating). After every episode, the discord server was alive with screaming and speculation. I was at home a lot over the summer holidays (before the pandemic, I should have gotten out while I still could) and I wrote some fics set during the course of S12. These were great for improving my writing with (mostly) short pieces where I could really milk the angst of S12.
You can find the series here
4) The Timeless Child illustration
Particularly proud of this one because it is an extremely rare example of me starting something, leaving it for like 8 months, and then actually finishing it. I think I did good on the colours :)
5) Horizon Zero Dawn illustration
As I do every year, I replayed Horizon in 2020. It’s such an incredible game world and I’ve spent more time in it than any other. It’s my favourite escape! Also to my Doctor Who fans, check this game out, it’s one of my absolute favourite sci fi stories! There’s a movie with cutscenes + gameplay here.
6) Doctor Who Companions illustration
This one gets a place because it’s my most popular post of the year and it was interesting experimenting with a different art style and actually drawing poses. I love all these girls so much :))
7) The Modern Prometheus
This one is very, very incomplete, but it’s sitting in my drafts at over 100k (messy, messy) words and there are a few chapters up already. It’s a retelling of the Timeless Child’s story, delving into the world of a very ancient Gallifrey. I continue to be the only person over here in my corner of loving (to hate) Tecteun. I plan on seriously reworking the story but I am still really proud of my work on it so far!
also I drew a cover, which I’m proud of because I barely draw landscapes
8) RYCBAR
This one is also incomplete, BUT I am more than halfway through so this one counts as 2020 :p It’s a few fic ideas all smashed together that I finally, finally got around to starting recently and it’s alllll about Clara.
And lastly! I am super grateful for the Doctor Who fan community. I disappeared in the middle of the year for a while, and 2020 was a very, very strange year, but I have thoroughly enjoyed interacting with you all and your incredible works of art!
I’m tagging @jolivira @sunshinedaysforever @braddersbangerz and @not-mandip

For the first time ever, the Toonami versions of OVA1/2, Universe, and Tokyo are available online! On their respective archive.org pages you can access each episode easily.
Watch now: OVA1/2, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo.
For users who keep up with contemporary anime communities, we also have an upload for the entire run available on Nyaa.
It’s been quite a journey in getting these episodes from analog to digital. If you’re interested in reading about the process of how these almost lost-to-time edits came into our hands and how we’ve gone about preserving them before the tapes rot, then sit back and enjoy the story below!
Part 1: Toonami – A Love Story.
Tenchi Muyo! and Toonami are tied together like the red thread of fate often times referenced in many East Asian myths. For those who aren’t aware, Toonami was a programming block on the Cartoon Network channel. Starting in 1997, it did one thing for anime that no other channel in the English-speaking world had ever done: showcased anime during “PrimeTime” (In North America at least, this was 4pm to 7pm Eastern Standard time). Before the internet, having this block of time meant having the most eyes on your product, meaning exposure was huge. Oftentimes whoever got on this block, regardless of the channel, was “made.”
However, it wouldn’t be until mid 1999, with a soft-rebranding, a new host, and an almost entirely anime-focused block, that Toonami would take over the world.
And on July 3rd, 2000, an entire generation was introduced to Tenchi Muyo! for the first time.
youtube
- The now legendary two minute Toonami promo.
Thanks to the efforts of Jason DeMarco, Sean Akins, Gill Austin, Sean Polinski, and the rest of the Toonami crew, the “Toonami generation,” still to this day, is the largest block of Tenchi Muyo! fans. Whether it was Toonami US, UK, or Australia. Tenchiforum is a testament to this fact. I personally would not be here were it not for Toonami, so to say that fans of Tenchi Muyo! hold Toonami in a high regard is an understatement.
I had always wanted to somehow, some way, get the Toonami version of Tenchi up for everyone to see again, but my old Toonami VHS recordings were long gone, and I figured trying to piece together the Toonami version from other people’s tapes would just be too hard with how many episodes were broadcast, that was until… 2012
In mid-to-late 2012, I found out that Pioneer actually released a home video version of what was shown on Toonami. It was simply released as “Tenchi Muyo!” in those big, white, clam shell VHS cases (that most people probably remember for old Disney movies). I felt as though I had struck gold! I was able to get a hold of the first two OVA, and was able to rip them to my computer.
Tumblr media
- Vol. 1 & Vol. 5 of “Tenchi Muyo!” – No distinction was made that they were separate series.
Though I was high on my endorphin-induced nostalgia, I ran into a couple of unforeseen problems.
First and foremost, the equipment I was using was not great. I used an old StarTech composite to USB dongle and the software that came with it. While this isn’t necessarily bad at first glance (it doesn’t support Windows 10), I had no experience whatsoever in the field of digital transfer. While I think my rips were okay for the time, I knew even then that they were too low of bit-rate and the quality of the rips suffered for it.
Because I also had no VCR at the time that had S-Video output, I was only able to output from composite, which meant the whopping 240p equivalent VHS tapes look fuzzier than they probably should. (I realize that VHS is technically an analog format, meaning that a 1:1 equivalent digital representation is hard to pin down or that someone might argue that it did technically output 480i over composite, but basically it was 240p.)
Another problem was the software itself, I had no idea about Virtualdub, AmaRecTV, or other helpful capture software, so I only recorded at a lower bit-rate, again producing an inferior quality rip.
I also ran into the problem of showcasing the videos. Funimation (who now owns the vast majority of the Tenchi Muyo! franchise in North America) had finally started really cracking down on people uploading videos to Youtube. Even though my videos were not completely the same, the algorithm immediately flagged and blocked them. This led me to uploading the videos to Facebook. I had to cut them in half because of Facebook’s restriction to roughly only 12 minutes of video. Somehow in the process, some of the videos had audio drop out for a minute or two, and for some the audio dropped out completely.
Arguably the biggest blow though, was when I learned that this set of Toonami tapes was incomplete. Pioneer stopped producing the Toonami version for home video after they finished releasing Universe. Meaning, the only way to get the Toonami version of Tenchi in Tokyo, was hope that someone, somewhere,  had taped it 11 years earlier.
While Tenchi in Tokyo has been getting more appreciation from fans as of late – thanks in part to most newer entries in the Tenchi OVA sucking harder than a vacuum – in the year 2000, it was the black sheep of the Tenchi Muyo! franchise. So expecting fans to have recorded any of it, let alone the entire series, was the long shot of all long shots. But even still, I made a post on the forum in 2013 asking if anyone knew anyone that might have anything.
Naturally, no one had any leads, and all of these previous problems meant that this project would, frustratingly, have to be shelved indefinitely.
Or at least, that’s what I thought.
Part 2: Deferred Dreams Don’t Die.
On April 5th, 2019, a person by the name of Talos dropped into our Discord server, and posted an introduction. Like so many, they had gotten into Tenchi through Toonami, but what would change everything, was this.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t believe what I was reading, someone actually had it!
Instinctively, I reached out to Talos via PM to ascertain how to go about acquiring these tapes, and admittedly, to see how legit this claim actually was. Because the fact of the matter is, when you’ve been around Tenchi fandom as long as I have, you’ll quickly realize the best bullshitters in the world come from this fandom.
But Talos was more than the genuine article! They sent over pictures and an incredibly detailed analysis of the quality of their tapes, watching through them all again to prove to me that their claim was valid.
It can’t be said enough that this all would not be possible without Talos, their willingness to work with me and send me their own personal tapes that they’ve kept for almost two decades just goes to show how awesome they are and how much they care about the fandom.
So the deal was struck, and the dream that laid deferred for almost six years lived again.
Tumblr media
- A time capsule from another era.
But with dreams from the past, come the demons that plagued them way back when. I still only had the setup I once had, and at this time I was really trying to be tight with my finances for a number of different reasons, but this opportunity was too good to pass up, I wasn’t going to let this dream go, even if it wasn’t perfect.
Talos’ tapes showed up, and I rolled up my sleeves.
So I put in the first tape, the first seven episodes of Tokyo, into the old VCR I used to originally rip the Pioneer tapes, a JVC HR-VP650U….
Tumblr media
And static…
Or rather, a tape that would play for 3 seconds, then immediately drop to static.
This wouldn’t work.
I then tried my other VCR, a Sony SLV-N50 from the mid-to-late 90’s that I was able to “fix” by removing the old Android Kikaider tape that got stuck in there many years prior.
It worked!…..but…..not all that well.
While it did actually play the tape relatively smoothly, the colors were completely washed out in comparison to the JVC, and it had this weird color flickering that was particularly noticeable when black backgrounds were on screen. (This was not unique to this tape, it did it with everything I put in there.)
As much as it pained me, there was no way I was going to rip it with this setup.
So the hunt began for not just a replacement VCR, but one that was high quality and recommended among enthusiasts for digital transfer. Which meant research and long winding rabbit holes of non-answers and vagueness, and unfortunately, money.
Without a doubt, the de facto list of best VCRs for transferring comes from digitalFAQ.com. This list is not only informative but gives you a broad range of ones to look for in the event you can’t find an “elite” one. However, this list has also become the de facto list used by people who are hawking their sets on eBay to try and get every penny from enthusiasts and new-comers as possible.
After three frustrating weeks of losing bid wars on eBay, someone finally put up one of the good sets, the JVC SR-V10U. I quickly sent them what I thought was a reasonable but not bank-breaking offer….
Tumblr media
And they accepted! The beast was finally mine.
Immediately upon unwrapping and testing it, the quality difference between what I had then and what I was looking at now was staggering. The SR-V10U had beautiful color, while having the incredible ability to stabilize the old tapes with its TBC (Time Base Corrector), as well as onboard Video Stabilization option. Combined with the ability to output video via the superior S-Video cable, I now had something that, despite its age and typical old VHS wear, was way better than I could have imagined.
Part 3: No Need for Nostalgia.
You’re probably thinking to yourself “Dagon, why go through the trouble? The OVA has a beautiful Blu-ray release, and Universe and Tokyo have pretty decent DVD releases. Why would you ever want to rip old VHS tapes of an inferior quality release that was in some cases censored?”
Tumblr media
- The now famous Toonami “bikinis”.
Because this version of Tenchi Muyo! is a piece of history. Not only is it a piece of Tenchi history, but a piece of Toonami history as well. Being able to preserve this in the best quality possible is being able to point to future generations and say “This is why I’m here.”
For a lot of us it’s about taking us back to a simpler time, grade school, high school, university. Taking us back to a time before the internet was what it is today.
So now we can, after almost 20 years, re-watch the version of Tenchi Muyo! that brought so many of us joy and wonder.

So the Hickman stuff... There's so much of it and I don't know where to start! Can you give some recommendations (especially with the Tony and Steve stuff)?
The thing about Hickman’s Avengers run is that if you’re interested in reading any of it, the best thing to do is read all of it. The run as a whole is structured as one continuous story spanning about 100 issues – this is Avengers vol 5, New Avengers vol 3, and the event Infinity. (And you should probably finish up with Secret Wars.)
While at the beginning it might be possible to read Avengers and New Avengers separately, by the end of the run it basically won’t make sense unless you’re reading them both, because you are more or less alternating one issue from each series, and they are written assuming you are reading them both. Similarly, Infinity is designed to be read interspersed among Avengers and New Avengers issues.
I can certainly give you issue numbers that are important for Steve and Tony – New Avengers #3 is the mindwipe, Avengers #29 is when Steve finds out about the mindwipe, and Avengers #44 is when Steve and Tony finally meet for the last time – but I want to stress that the overarching plot is complicated, and there’s a whole lot going on, and the fact that it’s written as one big story means it assumes you know what’s going on.
So if you’re going to read it, you should read the whole thing from the beginning, in approximately the order it was released in. Luckily, since I ran this as a book club for the Discord server, I have a reading order premade. (You can find reading orders on the internet but many of them are EXTREMELY WRONG because they tell you to read New Avengers #1-3 before Avengers #1. Which is EXTREMELY WRONG. In my opinion.)
Here’s my order under the Read More. The second half might not be exactly accurate to Hickman’s preferred order because I wrote it before the second omnibus was out and I haven’t checked it since, but the first half is definitely right, and Time Runs Out is right. It’s also split up in weeks, approximately the contents of two trades per week (because this was for book club), and features Additional Reading that you can do if you want for more backstory.
Week Zero is some backstory on the Illuminati, the Infinity Gems, and why Steve is in the Illuminati, as well as the annual from Hickman’s run, which is out of order but we needed somewhere to put it because it is so much happier than everything else and not by Hickman anyway. If you know all of this already you can just start with Week One.Week Zero:New Avengers: Illuminati (2006) #1New Avengers: Illuminati (2007) #1-5Avengers vol 4 #7-12Avengers vol 5 Annual

Audio
[Commission] Spookster Vibes Instinct Chronicles Vol.1 | Mixed by Duality by Duality "This new mix series is meant to highlight each Monstercat sublabel and the music they release on each one in a way similar to the comp albums. Also with the official comp album mixes now being much shorter even at the increased track count of 50 I wanted to create a more longer mix for those who still crave long form mixes. Hope you enjoy what the label has to offer!" ~ Follow Spookster Vibes ~ Soundcloud: https://ift.tt/3egBxlO Twitter: https://twitter.com/SpooksterVibes Youtube: https://youtube.com/c/DanielleGormley ~ Follow TheOnlyPixel19 ~ Tweetr: https://twitter.com/TheOnlyPixel19 Discord: https://ift.tt/2yMCbH5 YouTube: https://goo.gl/Bfpmdn SoundCloud: https://ift.tt/2b2zlj7 Instagram: https://ift.tt/2MI6iGN Linktree: https://ift.tt/3it3PuW Website: https://ift.tt/2yMjseN ~ Tracklist ~ 1.
