So as you may know, Rent did a 20th anniversary tour two years ago. There was an American version and the UK version. Now I saw the UK version and it was THE best. No arguments. 

Now I’m pretty sure the UK cast of Rent20 recorded an album and the producer Bruce Guthrie wants to release it, or at least gives us a little taster from it if, and only if, we can get the RENTOnStage twitter account to 10,000 followers. 

So I need your help.

I’ve already been campaigning on twitter and just recently a member of the cast has announced that she wants to set up a RENT cast reunion if she can get her post to 500 likes. She’s only 19 likes away.

1) Il drama più bello che hai visto quest'anno: Prison Playbook

È stata dura quest’anno scegliere. Non c’è stato un drama che si accaparrasse tutti i premi come nelle due volte precedenti (vedi “Someday or One Day” nel 2020 e “The Untamed” nel 2019), quindi “Prison Playbook” si è dovuto scontrare con pezzi da novanta come “Hot Stove League” e “18 Again” (e altri che ho scartato più facilmente).

Non pensavo che avrei mai guardato “Prison Playbook”. È già qualche anno che è disponibile su Netflix, ma non l’ho mai guardato perché la tematica (la prigione) non pensavo fosse nelle mie corde o facesse per me. Invece, è stato una sorpresa inaspettata!

Intanto, nonostante assesti qualche bel colpo di cruda realtà che ti fa stringere il cuore, è un drama molto più leggero di quello che ci si potrebbe aspettare. A sorpresa, le risate sono tante, è piacevole da seguire se piacciono i rapporti d’amicizia simil familiari, con questi carcerati e queste guardie della prigione in cui dimora il lead che insieme formano tanti rapporti uno più bello dell’altro. I personaggi che finiscono per catturare il cuore sono tanti, ognuno che spicca a modo suo. “Prison Playbook” non avrà lasciato il segno come “Someday or One Day” prima di lui, ma è un drama infarcito di scene che mi sono rimaste impresse e che è stato una bellissima esperienza. Sono sicura che in questo quiz lo ritroveremo ancora!

2) Il drama che si meriterebbe un sequel: Law School

Premettendo che io non credo nei sequel se non per concludere una storia che non è conclusa con la prima stagione (tipo “Alice in Borderland”. Dove non solo devono fare la seconda stagione, ma devono pure MUOVERSI a farla, perché io la voglio vedere!), “Law School” potrebbe essere una buona scelta. Non tanto perché sia rimasto qualcosa di aperto, ma perché aveva un sacco di personaggi che mi sono piaciuti (il prof <3) e che vorrei vedere di nuovo in azione con un caso.

E non direi di no a un approfondimento della dinamica potenzialmente amorosa tra due dei personaggi principali tra il gruppetto degli studenti (ora ex studenti). Vedrei bene un proseguo ulteriore della loro storia, non solo sul piano amoroso, ma anche quello lavorativo.

Non sto esattamente bramando un sequel per “Law School”, ma se ne facessero uno non storcerei il naso.

3) Il drama che ti è piaciuto di meno: A Love So Beautiful (kr)

“A Love So Beautiful” è quel drama che finisce per farti provare paura ogni volta che viene annunciato un remake di una serie che in originale era bella.

“A Love So Beautiful” è il remake del drama cinese con lo stesso nome. La versione cinese non era perfetta, nonostante mi sia rimasto un buon ricordo. Non era esente da difetti (tipo, la prima parte e la seconda sono un po’ sbilanciate), ma i coreani hanno creato uno scempio! Solo una cosa sono riusciti a far bene, cioè migliorare il second lead (ma non ci voleva molto, perché quello cinese era una piaga), il resto… tra la “recitazione” da recita scolastica delle elementari del lead (aveva anche la faccia di uno alle elementari), la chimica tra i due protagonisti inesistente, la storia resa superficiale e tagliata con l’accetta (praticamente il minutaccio da una serie all’altra si è quasi dimezzato mantenendo la storia quasi identica) e le scene assurde inserite qui e là (non ripensare alla scena del balletto, non ripensare alla scena del balletto, non ripensare…) quello che resta è solo un brutto ricordo.

4) Il protagonista maschile preferito: Oh Seung Ha di “Lucifer” (The Devil)

​A scanso di equivoci, non parlo della nota serie americana, ma di un drama coreano del 2007 (tra l’altro, sto un filino barando, perché il lead LEAD sarebbe il poliziotto, ma è comunque un secondo protagonista altrettanto importante. Oltre che migliore del poliziotto in... praticamente ogni cosa <3).

Prima di tutto, dovete sapere che l’attore è lo stesso di “Goong”, ma nonostante la differenza di un solo anno tra un drama e l’altro, è quasi come vedere due persone diverse per quanto i due personaggi sono differenti e recitati in maniera diversa. Ammiro inoltre l’attore per aver scelto un ruolo del genere dopo quello di “Goong”, si è proprio voluto mettere alla prova e l’ha fatto alla grande. L’Avvocato di “Lucifer” mi ha affascinata fin da subito. È un uomo misterioso che fin dall’inizio del drama, dalla prospettiva del telespettatore che vede e sa più dei personaggi stessi, ti sembra sociopatico e che passi il suo tempo a complottare. Poi lo conosci e vedi dietro la maschera di freddezza, di quest'uomo che da ragazzino ha perso tutto per colpa di un bulletto arrogante che non ha manco pagato per quello che ha fatto. Una serie di disgrazie che gli hanno rivoluzionato la vita per sempre. Nonostante tutto, però, nonostante voglia vendetta, non è diventato spietato, ha dei principi e una morale, non fa del male alle persone e si sente in colpa anche per le sue stesse manipolazioni. Il personaggio più umano e interessante del drama. L’ho adorato.

Nota di merito ai lead che ho dovuto scartare: quello di “Doctor Stranger” (Lee Jong Suk <3), quello di “18 again”, il bellissimo principe di “Maiden Holmes” e il graffiante professore di “Law School”.

5) La protagonista femminile preferita:  Shin Ga Hyun di 365: Repeat The Year

​La cosa interessante di questa scelta è che all’inizio, come personaggio, Shin Ga Hyun non colpisce in modo particolare. Ha i suoi momenti, ma non spicca. È un’evoluzione di episodio in episodio, pian piano vengono mostrati lati di lei che me l’hanno fatta apprezzare sempre di più, giungendo poi a conquistare questo titolo per l’anno 2021.

Mi è piaciuto un sacco quando con la sua mente svelta riusciva a inventarsi delle soluzioni immediate per i problemi che le si presentavano davanti, e il suo intuito investigativo. Era proprio un bel personaggio, sveglia, intelligente e coraggiosa.

6) Un drama che ti ha fatto venire la sindrome da Second Lead: Attention Love

Cos’è la sindrome del second lead, si mangia?

A parte gli scherzi... generalmente non ne soffro, ma ho anch’io le mie eccezioni! Ho scartato The True Beauty perché... alla fine erano meglio da amici lei e il second lead, mentre ho scelto Attention Love perché, anche se alla fine il second lead per quanto mi riguarda ha fatto la scelta migliore (Angelina, WE love you!), quanto accidenti ho odiato il lead. QUANTO?!

E’ uno dei protagonisti più insopportabili che mi siano mai capitati!

Sempre a farsi le paranoie, a tenere sulle spine la lead, ma allo stesso tempo friendzonandola per anni. E per troppi episodi.

Ma dato che non siamo qui a parlare di quel mentecatto (ne riparliamo dopo con più calma...), passiamo al secondo lead, che invece era una persona decente, e presente, e un buon amico. Arriviamo al punto che praticamente si strappa il cuore dal petto pur di aiutarla (perché evidentemente pure lui si era rotto le scatole del suo rivale...).

Aveva anche una discreta chimica con la lead, funzionavano insieme, ricordo che hanno avuto delle belle scene shippose. Per quanto mi riguarda, sarebbe stato meglio lui.

Di gran lunga.

7) Un drama di cui faresti un rewatch adesso: Alice in Borderland

Ogni anno questa è la domanda più difficile... io odio i rewatch, ma direi che almeno quest’anno una risposta ce l’ho.

Ho visto “Alice in Borderland” spinta dalla voglia di vedermi un altro death game dopo “Squid Game” e il drama giapponese mi ha colpito moltissimo. “Squid Game” ha le sue buone qualità, ma “Alice in Borderland” si è fatto apprezzare in modo particolare per i personaggi, i giochi cervellotici (che ho preferito a quelli più semplici e popolari della famosa serie coreana) e qualche colpo di scena ben assestato. Mi ha tenuto incollata e mi ha fatto disperare che la stagione fosse così breve e praticamente monca visto che siamo solo a metà storia.

Rewatcharmi la prima stagione non sarebbe solo piacevole perché penso proprio che la rivedrei volentieri, ma sarebbe utilissima anche per prepararmi alla seconda stagione rinfrescandomi alla grande la memoria.

8) La morte di un personaggio che non hai ancora superato: Lucifer (The Devil)

Ovviamente, essendo il mio personaggio preferito dell’intera serie, ho sofferto molto per la morte del mio avvocato del cuore e avrei davvero tanto voluto che alla fine sopravvivesse e la facesse pure franca, ma, allo stesso tempo, sono consapevole che fosse l’unica fine possibile per lui. Inoltre, il finale è visivamente poetico e non lo cambierei di una virgola. Però soffro. Meritava di più.

9) Miglior Second Lead maschile: Jung Nam Gil di “Go Back Couple”

Un grande second lead. Mi era impossibile shipparlo con la lead perché si sentiva davvero tanto la disparità in esperienza (lei è proprio vecchia dentro! XD) e poi perché non c’era spazio per lui (sapete come si dice “tra moglie e marito non mettere il dito”, allo stesso modo lui non aveva speranza di mettersi in mezzo a una coppia così navigata).

Mi è piaciuto il fatto che, a differenza dei second lead classici, non fosse pressante e/o pesante. Mi è piaciuto che avesse una storia tutta per sé, che coinvolgesse la sua famiglia, cioè gli ha dato ulteriore spessore. E’ bello che la sua esistenza non girasse tutta intorno al provarci con la lead. Ho trovato anche interessante che la prima volta che le ha chiesto di uscire fosse per un motivo pienamente egoistico, è qualcosa che non si sente spesso. E sono molto soddisfatta del suo finale, se fosse rimasto a piangersi addosso per la lead perduta, avrebbe perso punti. Invece no, è rimasto un ottimo second lead dall’inizio alla fine.

10) Miglior Second Lead femminile: Angelina di “Attention, Love!”

Un nome, un personaggio.

Pazzesca nella sua eccentricità, nel suo parlare metà inglese metà mandarino. Se il drama fosse stato solo su di lei e il second lead, “Attention, Love!” ne avrebbe di sicuro giovato.

E poi Angelina si distingue dalle tante, troppe second lead rompiscatole che quasi ti fanno esplodere il fegato dal nervoso per quanto sono invadenti, pazze e visionarie. Angelina era divertente, simpatica, una buona amica e le sue buone qualità alla fine sono state premiate.

Bonus: La second lead di My Roommate is a Gumiho. Era un personaggio particolare, con il fatto che era un ex volpe da poco divenuta umana dopo secoli, e che aveva non poche difficoltà ad abituarsi all’evoluzione della lingua (sbagliava continuamente modi di dire, oppure fraintendeva alcuni termini). Era divertente vederla punzecchiarsi con il lead, proprio come due amici che si conoscono da una vita.

11) Miglior bacio: We Best Love: Fighting Mr 2nd

Ho segnato la seconda stagione, ma onestamente il premio vale praticamente per qualsiasi bacio si siano scambiati i due protagonisti. Abbiamo quelli più “domestic” e quelli più drammatici come quello quando si rivedono (vedi sopra...), tutti molto naturali e realistici.

12) Il protagonista e la protagonista che proprio non ti è piaciuto/a: Doctor Stranger (female) e Attention, Love! (male)

Il protagonista di Attention, Love! è uno dei peggiori che mi siano mai capitati davanti.

Come già preannunciato qualche risposta fa, Yan Li Zheng è un protagonista terribile. Ha tendenze psicopatiche (la serie avrà convenientemente dimenticato che ha quasi buttato di sotto una persona, ma io no!), ha protratto una trama risolvibile in 5 episodi rendendola lunga il triplo, ha friendzonato per quasi tutta la seria la lead SENZA ALCUNA RAGIONE accettabile e, non contento, le faceva pure le scenate di gelosia. Ma se ti scoccia tanto che possa potenzialmente stare con qualcun altro, allora stacci tu, pezzo di idiota!!

Ma ci si può ostacolare da soli!?!?

Per quanto riguarda la lead di Doctor Stranger, non è che l’abbia proprio odiata. Diciamo che in questo caso sono proprio andata a esclusione. Lee Jong Suk non è sempre fortunato con la partner femminile. Se in Romance is a Bonus Book peccava solo la lead, qui peccano sia lead che second lead.

In particolare, della lead mi piaceva la storia, ma di lei in sé non sopportavo nemmeno di sentirla parlare. Il personaggio ne è uscito male proprio perché l’attrice non era all’altezza di un ruolo così corposo e di una co-star infinitamente migliore, finendo per risultarmi pesante da guardare. (Sì, avrei potuto inserirla come “peggior attrice”, ma per quello ho di meglio!)

13) Miglior bromance: Prison Playbook

Risposta breve: Tutte.

Risposta lunga: Per quanto il nostro lead giocatore e il suo amichetto del cuore fossero fantastici insieme, in generale non è la mia bromance preferita del drama. Per esempio, a me è rimasto molto di più nel cuore il lead con il Signor Guida. Questi due si sono prima incontrati nella prigione iniziale, e Guida ha aiutato molto il lead ad ambientarsi; la sua intelligenza è stata molto d’aiuto e completamente in contrasto con quel testone del lead. Quando si sono divisi perché Guida è andato trasferito, io ci sono rimasta malissimo (tra l’altro vogliamo parlare del gesto del lead di aiutare la madre di Guida? <3 <3). In seguito, per fortuna, Guida è tornato dove stava il lead, e il suo aiuto anche con gli allenamenti e altre situazioni è stato assolutamente prezioso, e il loro rapporto d’amicizia sempre più profondo e vero. Il finale mi ha proprio scaldato il cuore.

Meritano una menzione anche il Capitano Demone e il Tossico, bisticciavano costantemente come due bambini delle elementari; ma anche Min Chul e il Tenente Paeng, che dopo tanti anni di prigione, pure se su due fronti diversi, ormai erano diventati amici; e il lead con il Tossico, si prendeva cura di lui come un fratellino. Insomma, un cast fantastico.

E, a questo proposito...

14) Miglior Cast: Prison Playbook

Li ho amati tutti. Erano un gruppo fenomenale. Dalle guardie che non sono stereotipate per niente (come ci si potrebbe immaginare), ai detenuti, al direttore che pare scemo ma sotto sotto...

Non si sono create solo amicizie, a volte i rapporti erano stretti come veri fratelli, o, addirittura, padre e figlio, vedi Min Chul con Valjean, il quale è riuscito ampiamente a far perdonare un suo errore nel corso della serie con una scena che mi ha proprio fatto piangere.

Perché la verità è che uno dei punti forza maggiori di questa serie sono i personaggi e come si rapportano tra di loro. E questo premio se lo meritano tutto.

15) Peggior Second Lead maschile e femminile: Doctor Stranger (female) e Watashitachi wa Douka Shiteiru (male)

Sembra che la second lead di “Doctor Stranger” non fosse solo amata, ma che addirittura la maggior parte delle persone avrebbe preferito che il nostro bel dottore Lee Jong Suk (tra l’altro il suo ruolo più bello, nonostante il drama sia pieno di lacune) finisse con lei.

La mia reazione: ?????? O_O

Onestamente... non capisco. Cioè, lo so che la lead era una cagna a recitare, e che effettivamente la ship principale non fosse questo granché (come detto anche in precedenza), ma la second lead era pure peggio! Si faceva castelli in aria sul niente, si lamentava continuamente, era una lagna unica e non importa quanto il lead non se la filasse di pezza palesemente, proprio non voleva capire e, anzi, pareva quasi colpa del lead se non se la filava.

Per quanto riguarda il second lead peggiore, invece, anche in questo caso l’ha fatta da padrona l’esclusione. Mi sono accorta che tra i drama visti non ce n’era nessuno di particolarmente terribile (o è la mia memoria a fare cilecca), però mi ricordo che quello di questo drama giapponese molto bello invece sia stato abbastanza insopportabile e il suo innamoramento con la lead fuori luogo. Per non parlare dello sviluppo con la second lead, buttato praticamente a caso in cinque minuti giusto per non farli rimanere da soli.

16) Miglior finale: Lucifer (The Devil)

Potevo scegliere tipo “Hot Stove League” (che meriterebbe più premi in questo quizzone, ma avendolo visto a inizio anno è stato soppiantato da “Prison Playbook”), o “Prison Playbook”, invece no, questo drama vecchissimo del 2007.

Perché?

Perché il finale è poetico in una maniera assurda e la scena finale mi ha lasciato senza parole nella sua bellezza. E io l’ho preso con... trasporto.

Nel senso che mi stavo disperando.

[SPOILER] La scena dei due personaggi principali morti uno di fianco all’altro, con uno con la testa sulla spalla dell’altro nonostante si odiassero fino a cinque minuti prima, ce l’ho impressa nella retina. Io il lead poliziotto non lo perdonerò mai, ma quel finale mi ha colpito immensamente.

17) Un drama che ti penti di aver visto: Nabi My Stepdarling.

L’ho visto e l’ho anche portato a termine, ma ho fatto male.

Ogni tanto mi viene voglia di guardarmi un lakorn (tipo ora ne sto vedendo uno, ed è molto meglio di questo), ma non sempre ci prendo. Qui, poi... ho volutamente ignorato i tag presenti su mydramalist che non erano esattamente positivi, ho voluto provarci lo stesso perché mi incuriosiva la storia, ma è stata una sofferenza portarlo a termine.

Lui era troppo. Lei mi faceva una pena assurda. C’erano troppi personaggi insopportabili. I cattivi erano pazzi (ma tipo pazzi pazzi), e i buoni stupidi. La comunicazione tra i personaggi inesistente. Il lead... oddio, il lead. Insomma, un’esperienza da dimenticare, non ne è assolutamente valsa la pena.

L’Ost però era bella. Ce l’ho tutt’ora nella mia playlist di spotify.

18) Una ship fittizia che però tu shippi: Law School

Io sto ancora qui a soffrire perché Han Joon Hwi e Kang Sol (A) non si sono concretizzati. Avevano una chimica pazzesca e adoravo il loro rapporto, quindi è un vero peccato che non mi abbiano dato delle vere conferme. Perché sì, più o meno si è dato a intendere che almeno lui provasse qualcosa, ma nulla di assolutamente certo. Dov’è il bacio che mi meritavo? E il matrimonio? E i 20 figli? E i 500 casi di omicidio che risolveranno insieme?

19) Un drama che merita più conoscenza: Hot Stove League

E’ passato troppo in sordina e non lo accetto! Ammetto che io stessa non pensavo che avrei apprezzato un drama che c’entra con il baseball, sport che in Italia è pure praticamente sconosciuto, eppure è stato pazzesco.

Forse... proprio perché più che lo sport, il vero protagonista è quello che c’è dietro.

Quando il lead diventa il direttore generale, i Dreams (la squadra di baseball protagonista della serie) sono un disastro. La squadra, a parte Lim e qualche altro, è sotto la media, ci sono problemi tra i tecnici che la gestiscono e soprattutto alla società che li gestisce gliene frega poco o niente di loro. Investe poco e si lamenta se ogni anno la squadra perde più di quello che fa guadagnare.

Per fortuna arriva il lead a sistemare le cose.

Vinceranno il campionato? CHISSENEFREGA!

Il bello è che non è questo il punto. Non è la meta che conta, ma il viaggio. E questo viaggio di 16 episodi è stato meraviglioso.

Ricordo di aver visto i primi 15 minuti del primo episodio preoccupandomi che non sarei riuscita a finire nemmeno la prima ora.

E invece...

20) il drama in arrivo che non vedi l'ora di vedere: Alice in Bordeland 2

Mi ripeterò, ma mi hanno lasciato troppo con il fiato in sospeso!

I giapponesi devono perdere il vizio di fare solo mezza storia e poi il resto lasciarselo come seconda stagione (ciao, Anata no Ban Desu), come in questo caso. In più l’attesa per la seconda stagione è lunghissima, fine 2022!

Ma scherziamo? Faccio in tempo a mangiarmi le mani fino ai gomiti.

21) Di quale drama vorresti un reboot/ revival?: 365 Repeat the Year

Penso che, se fosse scritto dagli stessi autori di “Someday or Oneday”, “365 Repeat the Year” come reboot taiwanese ne uscirebbe piuttosto bene. La trama sicuramente funzionerebbe almeno tanto quanto quella coreana, perché autori del genere riuscirebbero benissimo a tenere in piedi gli avvenimento del salto temporale senza lasciare buchi di trama. E poi è un bel drama, non sarebbe male rivederlo in un’altra veste. Molto spesso, per passare da una nazione a un’altra, un drama deve cambiare moltissimo, ma penso che “365 Repeat the Year” si sposerebbe benissimo per un eventuale reboot.

22) La storia d'amore peggiore: Nabi, My Stepdarling

Sempre a riprendere quanto scritto prima, Nabi My Stepdarling prende il rispetto dovuto alla protagonista in quanto essere umano e lo getta dalla finestra. La poveretta viene tirata di qua e di là come un sacco di patate talmente tante volte che è incredibile che abbia il braccio ancora attaccato. Viene costantemente criticata, accusata di essere l’amante di non so più quanti uomini (soprattutto sposati), insomma... ma di cosa stiamo parlando?

Perché ho finito il drama, vi chiedete?

Avete presente quando capita un incidente e non puoi fare a meno di continuare a guardare? Ecco, qui uguale.

23) Il finale peggiore: The Count of Monte-Cristo - The Great Revenge

La grande vendetta un cavolo!!

Chi cavolo molla la vendetta all’ultimo secondo?! Dov’è il nostro Conte di Montecristo incavolatissimo che prova pietà solo per gli innocenti?! Perché sul finale ha tipo lasciato perdere tutto a un passo dalla fine dando fuoco a tutto!?

Questo finale mi ha ferita.

La serie non era perfetta, nel cambiare gli avvenimenti (cosa che si poteva capire visto il salto temporale e di nazionalità) hanno fatto un po’ di casini e il tutto è combinato nel finale. Finale che tra l’altro è pure un po’ misterioso perché ovviamente dovevano pure metterci il classico finale a interpretazione.

Io non voglio interpretare, voglio il Conte di Montecristo con la vendetta compiuta, felice con Haideè e gli altri personaggi che piangono lacrime salate pendendosi del loro comportamento.

24) Una frase o una scena che ti è rimasta impressa: Prison Playbook

Facile!

L’ho rivista già molte volte...

Quando cominciavo a pensare che nessuno sarebbe andato a trovare Min Chul e temevo che Valjean si fosse dimenticato di lui, che tutti i “papà” fossero fasulli come una banconota del Monopoli, ecco che Min Chun ha ricevuto una visita in prigione completamente inaspettata.

Già il fatto che fosse andato a trovarlo è stato importante, ma non è stato solo questo. Valjean ha trascorso i mesi d’assenza lavorando e mettendo da parte dei soldi per poter portare qualcosa in dono, e stava anche pensando al futuro! Ho pianto tutte le mie lacrime quando ha detto a Min Chul che voleva che vivessero insieme come una vera famiglia quando anche Min Chul sarebbe stato libero.

...qualcuno ha un fazzoletto?

25) Personaggio più odiato: Deja Vù (thai)

Prima di tutto dovete sapere che Deja Vù e la versione thailandese del drama omonimo. Una coppia innamoratissima sta per sposarsi, ma... lui muore tragicamente. Lei ritorna sul luogo della proposta di matrimonio - in mezzo a un lago - e cade in acqua... e finisce per incontrare la Dea dell’Acqua.

Ed è di lei che parliamo oggi, di questa Dea.

Punto primo, se sei la Dea dell’acqua, perché fai patti (infami) con la gente? Perché riporti in vita la gente, fai fare salti temporali assurdi e scateni cose come perdite di memorie e non mi ricordo più manco cosa?

Punto secondo, ma ci sei nata così antipatica? Praticamente questa tizia ha passato 22 episodi a tormentare i protagonisti. Eh, okay, a una certa erano diventati tutti e due insopportabili perché continuavano ogni due per tre a sacrificarsi a vicenda, ma lei non gli ha reso la vita facile.

Prendiamo il primo patto che fa la lead. Ovviamente chiede che il fidanzato torni in vita, però non si ricorderà più di lei.

“Beh, è ovvio che ci sia un prezzo da pagare”, direte voi.

E invece no, la perdita di memoria è il bonus, il prezzo da pagare è che lei non possa più ballare (fa la ballerina), quindi non solo perde l’amore, ma anche la carriera.

Ah, un attimo, c’è anche il bonus 2: lei non si deve rinnamorare di lui, altrimenti lui muore di nuovo. Perché? Perché sì. (Anche se tutt’ora non ho capito questo cosa, perché lei è sempre stata innamorata di lui, altrimenti perché fare il patto?)

E questo è solo il patto 1. Andando avanti con gli episodi, a un certo punto anche il lead fa un patto. Chiede che la lead viva e di poterla amare liberamente per un po’ di tempo. La Dea accetta, lui darà i suoi anni di vita rimanenti alla lead e potranno amarsi nel breve tempo che gli viene lasciato (100 giorni... perché la Dea non è per niente tirchia!).

Poi ovviamente c’è il prezzo da pagare (no, regalare gli anni che gli restano non bastava...), che sarebbe l’amore della lead (in pratica lei si dimentica di lui). Quindi ora possono amarsi per i 100 giorni rimanenti, però lei non si ricorda affatto di lui! Oltre al danno, la beffa!

E c’è pure il bonus! In questi 100 giorni lui invecchia progressivamente. Esternamente resta uguale, però man mano ha tutto gli acciacchi dell’età a una velocità impressionante.

Insomma... proprio Miss Simpatia questa Dea!

26) Un drama che meriterebbe uno spin-off: Prison Playbook

[SPOILER] Il tenente demone è piaciuto così tanto che... perché non fare uno spin-off su di lui? D’altronde... non è uscito di prigione alla fine del drama, anche se sappiamo che un giorno prima o poi succederà, quindi non sarebbe male vedere la storia con lui come protagonista. Probabilmente ne uscirebbe fuori una cosa un pochino più politica, se pensiamo che i suoi avversari ne fanno parte. Non sarebbe male rivedere anche il tossico, che dopo il suo finale probabilmente ha perso la fiducia di letteralmente tutta la sua famiglia e il suo fidanzato (o dovrei dire ex?), per non parlare degli altri carcerati che dovrebbero essere ancora dentro (tipo Mr. Petizioni), o qualche volto nuovo. Non sarebbe forte?

27) La miglior storia d'amore secondaria: My Roommate is a Gumiho

Seconda coppia molto carina. Lui un ragazzo che ancora pensa alla ex che lo ha fatto soffrire, e lei una ex volpe divenuta umana. Mi è piaciuto come abbiano costruito la loro storia piano piano, usando un cliché molto classico che usato bene funziona (in particolare per una coppia secondaria che, per forza di cose, ha meno spazio), cioè il fake-dating (il fare finta di stare insieme), che costringe i due a passare un sacco di tempo insieme finché i sentimenti veri non saltano fuori. Era anche carino che si siano creati un sacco di fraintendimenti causati dall’incapacità della second lead con i modi di dire coreani e la terminologia moderna. Insieme erano proprio divertenti, sono stati un bel riempitivo per il drama. Poi non sembrava, come a volte capita, una storia scollegata da quella principale, visto che erano entrambi amici dei protagonisti e lei, come il lead, era una volpe.

28) Il personaggio più figo: Hot Stove League

Il lead di Hot Stove League è un grande. La squadra di baseball protagonista della serie è allo sbando e lui la rimette in sesto grazie alla sua spietatezza e alle sue presentazioni di power point che sarebbero in grado di convincere perfino gli eschimesi a comprarsi dei cubetti di ghiaccio. Tra decisioni impopolari e non, si dimostra di episodio in episodio sempre di più il migliore!

29) Il momento più trash: A Love So Beautiful (kr)

Vedere il lead fare un balletto tipico di un gruppo kpop (non che sia un problema di per sé, se si fosse trattato di qualcun altro avrei approvato, è solo che fa a pugni con il personaggio) è stata la goccia che fa traboccare il vaso. Vederlo ridere, fare le faccette e divertirsi nel farlo ha aggiunto benzina all’incendio.

Chi diavolo sei tu?, mi chiedevo.

Un siparietto simile il lead della serie cinese non avrebbe accettato di farlo nemmeno se gli avessero puntato una pistola alla tempia.

Hanno proprio calpestato il personaggio tutto d’un pezzo e indifferente dell’originale e di lui non è rimasta che cenere....

30) Miglior OST: “Sherlock: The Untold Stories”

Bellissima “Searching For The Ghost”, l’ost cantata da Dean Fujioka per il drama di cui è stato protagonista.

31) Il personaggio più amato: Law School

Il lead di Law School era così tanto un professore con la P maiuscola che nel drama faceva lezione pure mentre era sotto processo. Ogni momento era buono per essere il professore dei suoi studenti e aiutarli a diventare bravi avvocati o procuratori. Ho adorato il suo personaggio, la sua intelligenza, il suo carisma e il suo carattere. Tiene un sacco ai suoi studenti e lo dimostra continuamente, pure se sembra duro con loro.

32) Peggior villain: Lovers of the Red Sky

Premettendo che a me il drama in generale non mi ha detto molto, il villain, parte l’entità del dipinto, sarebbe il secondo principe Joo Hyang, il secondo figlio del re. Il fatto è... che la sua storia è tipo un riempitivo, non c’entra per niente con i protagonisti. Perché, a parte aver liberato l’entità nel primo episodio e desiderare di possederla per far casino in lungo e in largo, con i protagonisti c’entra poco visto che sono entrambi persone “comuni”. La sua storia è strettamente collegata invece al second lead, che è il terzo principe. E la storia è la solita pappardella di “voglio il trono e farò carte false per ottenerlo”, nulla di nuovo all’orizzonte.

E il primo principe? Manco hanno castato la sua versione adulta... sappiamo solo che è malato, chi l’ha mai visto??

Bonus spoiler: Tra l’altro... il drama finisce aperto sul fronte “corsa al trono”, non fanno affatto vedere la fine dello scontro tra secondo e terzo principe (ma i libri di storia - aka wikipedia - dicono che vince il second lead, quindi il terzo principe), lasciando tutto aperto. Oh, io una seconda stagione sul continuo di ‘sta roba non lo guardo manco per sbaglio!

33) Miglior personaggio comico: Go Back Couple

Anche se a tratti il drama e i personaggi di supporto peccavano un po’ di cringe, Go Dok Jae è stato un personaggio molto divertente con le sue espressioni e il suo modo esagerato di comportarsi. Tra l’altro, aveva una parrucca di capelli lunghi terribile che era praticamente un personaggio a sé.

34) Peggior attore e peggior attrice:  Falling into your Smile (female) e A Love So Beautiful (male)

Per quanto il drama non fosse così male, l’idea poi mi piaceva tantissimo (la lead entra a far parte di un team di giocatori online per un gioco particolarmente famoso che gira in rete. E’ un vero e proprio lavoro), l’attrice mi ha deluso tantissimo. Aveva sempre quest’espressione mista a noia e seccaggine che a volte stonava proprio con la scena che stava girando. Mai vista un’attrice peggiore. Mi è rimasta impressa una scena in cui un mini fan le chiede un autografo e lei risponde in modo gentile e allegro, ma la sua faccia dice l’opposto. Un trauma.

Il lead di A Love So Beautiful è stata un’altra cocente delusione. Non solo gli autori si sono accaniti con il suo personaggio rivoltandolo come un calzino, ma nemmeno l’attore è riuscito a dargli un minimo di dignità. Lui sembrava costantemente a disagio con il resto del mondo. Dov’è il Jiang Chen (no, non quello di The Untamed) che mi ricordo, quello freddo e sicuro di sé? Perché questo sembra sempre fuori posto? E poi perché ha la faccia di un bambino che rende la cosa ancora più ridicola dopo il salto temporale?

35) La scenografia più bella: Alice in Bordeland

La Tokyo di Alice in Bordeland, in questa realtà alternativa in cui non c’è quasi nessuno se per i pochi protagonisti, faceva un certo effetto. Strade, palazzi, ponti e sottopassaggi... chilometri e chilometri di spazio e nessuno a occuparlo, le scene erano veramente suggestive.

Bonus anche per la Spiaggia, che al contrario era così piena di gente da fare l’effetto contrario.

36) Il miglior colpo di scena: Anata no Ban Desu

La scena finale che chiude la prima stagione. E chi se l’aspettava?

[SPOILER ENORMI] Devo dire che da metà serie di aver cominciato a preoccuparmi un po’ per il lead, perché pensavo che lui avrebbe potuto rischiare di lasciarci le penne prima della fine, ma mai e poi mai mi sarei immaginata che sarebbe stata proprio la lead a lasciarci. E la cosa ci viene svelata in modo così improvviso e crudele, proprio quando sembrava che i lead fossero almeno in parte al sicuro, che lo shock è stato ancora maggiore. Complimenti agli autori. Tra l’altro questo apre la strada a un evoluzione per il lead che sarà di sicuro interessante.

37) Un attore o attrice un po' in là con gli anni che tu ami alla follia: Kim Mi Kyung di Go Back Couple

E’ sempre un piacere vederla interpretare la madre di qualche personaggio nei drama. Ormai ho perso il conto dei drama in cui l’ho vista, ma sono davvero tantissimi. In Go Back Couple, poi, il rapporto con la lead è profondissimo e pieno di scene che ti restano nel cuore dato che si è perfettamente consapevoli di cosa succederà quando la lead tornerà nel presente.

38) Una serie per riflettere, una per piangere, una per rilassarsi e una per innamorarsi:

Una serie per piangere: Move To Heaven. E’ il drama che in più punti ti strappa una lacrima (o anche un fiume), ti fa proprio stringere il cuore nel profondo.

Una serie per riflettere: 18 Again. Il viaggio che compie il protagonista per valorizzare al meglio quello che ha e lasciarsi andare quello che ha perso in passato è molto interessante e profondo,

Una serie per rilassarsi: Maiden Holmes. Nonostante tecnicamente sia un drama anche pieno di casi, è leggero, divertente, i personaggi sono simpatici e facili da amare. Mi sono divertita a guardarlo e non essendoci eccessivi conflitti tra i personaggi, ci si rilassa senza problemi.

Una serie per innamorarsi: My Roommate is a Gumiho. La storia d’amore tra i protagonisti è ben fatta (anche quella tra i second lead!), mi è piaciuta. I personaggi sono ben assortiti e seguire il loro amore anche tormentato è stato interessante, anche se non è il drama della vita.

39) L'ambientazione più brutta: Nabi, my Stepdarling

Beh... è ambientato in un night club principalmente, pieno di luci rompi-retina, clienti di dubbia reputazione e giovani donne troppo impegnate a tirarsi i capelli o prendersi a schiaffi a vicenda. Non esattamente un posto da favola.

40) Un drama che hai fatto fatica a finire: Perfect and Casual.

A volte mi piacere vedere drama super leggeri come My Unicorn Girl che ti rilassano al massimo il cervello (è bello farlo lavorare con i “365: Repeat the year” di turno, ma a volte sono belli anche drama senza impegno) e ti intrattengono con dei cliché carini. Perfect and Casual non ha risposto affatto alle mie aspettative. Un conto è rilassare il cervello, un altro farlo annoiare a morte. L’ho portato a termine per pure forza di volontà (e skippando qui e là), ma non mi ha lasciato niente. E’ stato una colossale perdita di tempo.

41) La scena dove hai pianto tutte le tue lacrime: Move To Heaven

Essendo un drama in cui i protagonisti puliscono le case della gente dopo la loro morte ed essendo fatto bene, i momenti magoni sono stati intensi e frequenti. Le storie di queste persone ormai defunte che avevano lasciato i loro ultimi averi viene trattato con delicatezza ed era inevitabile commuoversi per un drama di questa bellezza. Onestamente è difficile pure parlare di una scena in particolare, perché credo di aver pianto almeno una volta in quasi tutti gli episodi.

Comunque, per citarne una... il figlio che da tempo si era allontanato dalla madre, che alla fine piange per la sua morte quando ritrova il regalo che le fece con il primo stipendio, tenuto ancora nella scatola perché la madre non ebbe mai il coraggio di indossarlo.

2) Joss di Nabi My Stepdarling (perché il drama era brutto, ma lui no!).

43) Un oggetto/potere/abilità che vorresti: 365: Repeat The Year

Se tralasciamo il fatto che ho visto pochi fantasy, la possibilità di tornare indietro di un anno e magari, che ne so, vincere alla lotteria, non mi dispiacerebbe!

Certo, ovviamente escludendo tutti i casini che quei poveracci protagonisti del drama hanno affrontato nel corso degli episodi.

44) Miglior villain: I Fratelli Karamazov

Credo di aver visto davvero molto pochi (per fortuna) personaggi così crudeli, sadici, anaffettivi, pazzi, cattivi e chi più ne ha più ne metta nel modo di rapportarsi ai propri figli e alle proprie mogli, di come per anni abbia distrutto la vita delle persone che lo circondavano in più modi e ripetutamente. La gentilezza non esiste in quest’uomo. Né la pietà. Non esistono sentimenti positivi, al punto che ci si arriva a chiedere come abbia potuto mettere al mondo tre ragazzi completamente diversi da lui in quello che conta.

Certo, ha rischiato di rovinarli, qualcuno in particolare, ma per fortuna la presa su di loro si è sciolta prima dell’irreparabile.

Il padre dei fratelli Karamazov, interpretato magistralmente, lascia il segno per come abbia condizionato in senso negativo i protagonisti della storia, come li abbia praticamente portati alla deriva e che ora si spera marcisca nel girone più nero dell’inferno (non è spoiler, la scoperta del suo omicidio è letteralmente la trama del drama).

45) Miglior storia d'amore: Maiden Holmes.

I due protagonisti di Maiden Holmes mi sono piaciuti molto insieme. La relazione era paritaria, erano una bella squadra e lui è stato uno degli interessi amorosi migliori che abbia mai visto. E' una persona gentile in generale un po' con tutti (però in caso di necessità si altera pure lui), tiene in altissima considerazione le doti investigative di Su Ci, non è il tipo che giudica, quando la lead fraintende una certa situazione a un certo punto, nonostante ci resti male, cerca di provare la propria innocenza senza arrabbiarsi inutilmente. Ben vengano protagonisti maschili così. E poi sono casi rari che non sia l’ennesimo principe protagonista in lizza per il trono. Principe è e principe rimane.

La relazione con la protagonista funziona alla grande, niente second lead femminili o maschili, niente enormi fraintendimenti tirati avanti per ore e ore di visione visto che, guarda caso, entrambi i protagonisti usano la bocca per PARLARSI e chiarire le cose! Praticamente un miracolo.

L'anno scorso vi avevo chiesto di provare a vedere un drama o più drama che vegetavano nella vostra lista da anni. 45 bis) Come è andata? avete completato la Challenge? mentre ci pensate, ve ne propongo un'altra più tosta: Vi sfido a vedere un drama a vostra scelta, mentre è IN ONDA durante l'anno 2022 e a commentare ( dove volete: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumbrl...dove ve pare insomma. ) settimana dopo settimana le puntate. mi sento una stronza XD

Allora... avevo scelto due drama per la challenge: Doctor Stranger e Battle of Changsha. Purtroppo ho visto solo il primo e non è stato nemmeno chissà che drama, che si è salvato solo per Lee Jong Suk e per lo spunto di trama che comunque era interessante.

Per la nuova challenge... bella tosta, ci proverò! I drama on-air ogni tanto ho i periodi in cui lo guardo (tipo questo), ma non sono il tipo che commenta di episodio in episodio. Ci proverò!

RENT (part 2)

Last night I saw the UK tour of Rent at the Lighthouse in Poole, and I need to yell about how amazing it was!!!!! I saw this production when it was in London in January and it was just as incredible if not better the second time round. 

Last time I made a post about all the little moments I noticed in the show that absolutely made the production - which you can read here , and this is going to be adding to that list. 

So with that I present: “little things I noticed that you would only get from seeing this version it live” - Part 2 (WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!)

So I need to start by raving about Layton Williams as Angel - when I saw the show in London Layton was injured so Harrison Clark (who also happens to be Layton’s boyfriend) filled in for the role and was of course amazing, but Layton has mind-blowing dance skills. We’re talking handsprings, flipping into the splits and backwards aerial cartwheels off the stage. The audience did a lot of cheering/screaming in Today 4 U. 

At the start of you’ll see, Angel and Collins were sat on a couch in the background passing the bottle of Stoli between them and giggling.

In my post from last time I talked about Philippa Stefani as Mimi being really broken (and making me cry in “Out tonight”), and this time I noticed specifically what gave that impression was the fact that she is never standing completely still. She has this permanent leg jiggling thing that she does in Act 1, which serves as a constant reminder that she is very very much not okay.

During Will I, Roger was sat alone on the raised section of stage that serves as the apartment as the life support members sang from the stage around him. And he was on the couch crying. And that freaking got to me because normally Roger is the unemotional one, so yes I definitely shed a few tears at that point. This production is brilliant at hitting me in ways I never expected, when I thought I knew the show and knew when I was gonna cry it goes BAM NOPE YOU’RE CRYING IN “OUT TONIGHT”  AND “WILL I”

ANGEL’S FAN. Angel had this fan that she would constantly be sassily flipping out and fanning herself with, and during “Over the moon” she proceeded to start fanning herself, then Collins, then lying on her stomach, reaching down off the balcony where the two of them were sat, and fanning Joanne who was stood below them with Maureen’s boombox.

At the end of “La Vie Boheme” Angel jumped on Collins’ back and he gave her a piggy back downstage.

In “Happy New Year”, while Maureen was talking to Joanne on the phone at the edge of the stage, Mark was stood alone centrestage wearing a massive silver party hat and eating a bag of Doritos.

“Take me or leave me” was incredible. Maureen was played by Christina Modestou instead of Lucie Jones and she absolutely SLAYED. And Shanay Holmes has got to be my favourite Maureen of all time. I think I’m a little bit in love with her.

Shoutout to Ryan O’gorman for continuing to be imo the best Collins of all time and somehow managing to get an insane amount of pain and heartbreak into his voice and making everyone cry in “I’ll cover you reprise”. Seriously, give this guy all of the awards. All of them.

I like that Philippa Stefani does not do “pretty dying” as Mimi. She does proper ugly crying and shaking and seems barely able to get her words out and it’s painful to watch.

In my post from last time I talked about Collins going over to the lamp-post where he met Angel at the end of Finale B and resting his hand on it, but this time he literally full on hugged it and my heart broke a little more.

At the end of Finale B they had fake snow that came down on the stage!!

BONUS: My friends and I stage doored at the end and talked to Layton,  Chistina, Joshua Dever (who went on as Mark for the evening and absolutely lived up to Billy Cullum’s incredible performance) and Javar Parker (who played Benny) and they were all absolutely lovely!!!!!! 

but a highlight was when Ryan O’Gorman came out and couldn’t stop to talk (I’d assume because he had a train to catch bc we talked to him at stage door last time), then got on a freaking scooter and scooted away. And I’m not talking moped, I mean actual manual kids scooter. It was glorious. This cast is the best.

RENT’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR: In Memorium

IT’S BEEN OVER A WHOLE WEEK SINCE I SAW RENT AND I need to remember everything about that show because OH MY GOD it was the most perfect thing I have ever witnessed and I’m so upset I can’t go and see it a BILLION more times so I’m writing down everything so I don’t forget. I need to relive it. I’m not sorry. AND THIS IS ONLY ACT 1 HAHAHAHAHAHA

Also dedicated to my boo @itsbeaconhillsbaby because I know her memory fades so quick and we need this to LIVE ok. 

·                     Before it even begins, the curtain is up so you can see the stage and the set up and Ross e.g the guy portraying Roger is just wandering about on stage so you just kinda feel like you’ve walked into the apartment. You’re immediately transported from your seat in the theatre to their flat in New York

·                     Mark being that typical friend who shoves a camera in your face and asks you to do something cool and you’re literally like please go away but you can’t say that to him because he’s too fucking cute

·                     EVERY SINGLE PHONE CALL FROM MARK’S MUM. AND IN FACT ALL THE PARENTS. THEY ARE GOLDEN. And they give the show a sense of realism because yes they’re all bursting into song every five seconds but guess what, they still have parents who won’t leave them alone

·                     Tom Collins being that friend everyone loves to bits, he has a heart of gold and a voice to match

·                     Collins being shocked when he thinks it’s Roger that picked up the phone. Even though he’s been away for 7 months he knows his friends so well

·                     Joanne not being a theatre person when she literally sings two of the most theatrical songs in the entire production

·                     You Okay Honey is the sweetest frigging song in the entirety of the world and I cannot believe they cut it from the film. 

·                     Every single word Collins sings ever but especially the “Well you missed a sleeve” and “Angel indeed” and “Nice tree”

·                     ANGEL. TELLING. COLLINS. HE. LOOKS. CUTE. WHEN. HE. BLUSHES.

·                     That hesitation before Collins takes Angels hand. Y’all know his life just got 68796847292190465 times better after they run offstage together

·                     MARK ACTUALLY EXPLAINING WHAT HAPPENED TO APRIL. The film kinda glosses over it. You learn she died and she and Roger had AIDs but other than that you’re like huh?

·                     Roger being 100% relatable when he’s like “Zoom in on my empty wallet!”

·                     Ross Hunter singing One SOng Glory because really does life get better than this? 

·                     Philippa’s portrayal of Mimi is on point! She made it very obvious that Mimi was not only coping with AIDs but also a drug addiction. She was shaking and fidgeting and tapping and yes, just yes. She did a damn good job

·                     Her laugh when she steals her drugs back from Roger and runs off stage

·                     “WHO RAN NAKED THROUGH THE PARTHENON!” Now why has no one made a show about that?

·                     Collins throwing Mark and Roger food and drink and firewood. HOW LONG DID THEY HAVE TO REHEARSE THAT?!? 10 out of 10 was waiting for one of them to miss something

·                     “’Oh hi’ after 7 months?!” 

·                     “Struck gold at MIT” That line... god I’m drowning

·                     Roger not leaving the house and telling Collins that’s because he was waiting for him to get back. 

·                     ANGEL DUMOTT SCHUNARD SWINGING DOWN FROM THAT LADDER IN THAT OUTFIT AND FLINGING OFF THAT COAT AND THROWING THAT MONEY BEFORE COMMENCING T H A T DANCE.

·                     Layton WIlliams is a certified Queen of Dance.

·                     THAT FUCKING LEG KICK AND THOSE SPLITS. BOY HOW YOU EVEN DOING THAT?!

·                     And then when she’s done, she just goes and sits down with Collins and starts drinking vodka and fanning herself. IF THAT AIN’T ME!

·                     Benny spreading out the blueprints for his cyber-arts facility and Angel pretending to be interested

·                     “That boy could use some prosac! Or heavy drugs! Or group hugs!” Tag yourself.

·                     The little reprise to You’ll See and Roger’s “Let it be boys.”

·                     COLLINS SINGING I LIKE BOYS. I SWEAR MY HEART COMBUSTED

·                     Mark being overdramatic af as he enters the lot. I also appreciate the fact he turns the camera on himself just in case he dies at the hands of Joanne and the others never see him again

·                     The film does not have a patch on Billy and Shanay. OH MY GOD. Their dancing. The little bum wiggle Billy does and the stamping and the fucking length of time they took to take off their coats. It was intense af

·                     MARK AND JOANNE’S UNDERAPPRECIATED SEXUAL TENSION

·                     Mark squealing when Joanne stood on his toe.

·                     “fUCKING CHEATED!”

·                     Joanne answering the phone to tell Maureen they’re patched and she calls her Pookie and Mark laughed so fucking hard I was dying

·                     Angel and Collins introducing themselves at the life support meeting like asdffghjkl you guys talk about married

·                     MArk interrupting and being awkward af and kinda insensitive before just blurting his name in Paul’s face. That’s me. I’ve literally done that. Just shouted my name in someone’s face by way of introducing myself

·                     Lets talk about the fade from Steve to ROger singing about how he should’ve died. WOw. Thanks. My hearts not broken

·                     AND THEN WAM BAM THANK YOU MAM STRAIGHT INTO OUT TONIGHT

·                     HOW FAST DID SHE WHIP HER HAIR ROUND THOUGH OMFG AND THERE WERE SO MANY TIMES SHE WAS JUST HANGING ONTO THAT SCAFFOLDING BY HER LEGS ALONE. B A D A S S

·                     And then she just hops off the little platform into Roger’s apartment and does that lil face nuzzle. Mimi is my kinda girl I swear to god.

·                     Another Day... WHo doesn’t love everything about that song?

·                     HOW BEAUTIFUL DID THE ENTIRE CAST SOUND HARMONISING WILL I? God it was gorgeous. 

·                     ANd you could see Roger realising that he doesn’t want to die alone and that maybe he can have another shot at love and he puts on his coat and leaves the house. Talk about character development!

·                     “THIS LOT IS FULL OF MOTHERFUCKING ARTISTS!”

·                     That lady coming at Angel after she’s all like “Easy sugar easy” This is after Angel holds COllins back from saying something?! ANd Angel is having none of it she just backs the hell up like mmm no honey

·                     SANTA FE. SANTA FE. SANTA FE. THE MOST UNDER APPRECIATED SONG IN THE HISTORY OF THE THEATRE?!?

·                     RYAN O’GORMAN SAVED MY LIFE?

·                     “Sang it girl!”

·                     The bass line is to die for

·                     Mark third wheeling to hell and filming the whole thing

·                     There was a moment in one show when Angel got the spliff the wrong way round and then when it eventually got passed to MArk he just sat there with it like ??? before pasisng it back to Collins. WHAT A FUCKING INNOCENT

·                     Collins hitting Angels boot and doing that spin and swinging round the ladder and imitating Angel playing the drums when he says “You can drum a gentle drum”

·                     When they all sit on the bench and pretend to be driving a car to Santa Fe and then Collins pushes Mark’s camera round to film the horizon as he sings “Do you know the way to Santa Fe?”

·                     “YOU KNOW... TUMBLE WEED... PRAIRIE DOGS. YEAAAAAAAAH.”

·                     Dead. I’m dead at this point.

·                     ANd then I get hit with the intro to I’ll Cover You and I think I’m going to survive but y’all know I’m not.

·                     Anyway... Mark FINALLLLLLLY leaving!!! And Angel being like thank the gods and Collins is like “He’ll be back I can guarantee”

·                     With that in mind Angel is like shit better tell him I love him immediately before Mark crashes that party

·                     “I’ve been hearing violins all night,”

“ANything to do with me? Are we a thing?”

“Darling... We’re everything.”

CAN WE JUST !!! THEY’VE KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR LIKE A DAY AND A HALF?!? nOT EVEN THAT IDK. BUT THEY BOTH LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH IM CRYING TEARS OF BLOOOOOOD

·                     They just sit on the bench and sing to each other and then Collins kneels down in front of ANgel when his verse comes on

·                     RYAN PULLING OPEN HIS SHIRT TO INDICATE “I ain’t got much baggage”

·                     Then they fucking dance and look at each other from across the stage and it’s so soft you want to die but then you realise you already have and you’re in heaven

·                     AND THEN THE KISS AT THE END. HOLY MOTHER.

·                     We’re Okay - again UNDER APPRECIATED. ALSO DISAPPOINTED IT WAS CUT FROM THE FILM.

·                     YASS YASS YASS CHRISTMAS BELLS AND ALL THE VENDORS ARE ON THE STREET AND ANGEL AND COLLINS APPEAR SHOPPING FOR A NEW COAT

·                     Collins being a sweetheart and telling Angel she doesn’t have to do this for him and Angel’s little “Hush your mouth its Christmas”

·                     The look Layton gives the vendor when she offers Angel that ugly ass coat... Stunning. Hilarious. I’m choking.

·                     KISS ME IT’S BEGINNING TO SNOW.

·                     Mark retelling the past half hour of the production as he suddenly appears with Roger and is trying to get to grips with the whole Mimi/Roger thing

·                     Roger spotting MImi and being like there she is and Mark and his one track mind is like MAUREEN?! And Roger’s voice literally sounds like an eyeroll as he says “MIMI!!!” 

·                     Mark’s “WHoa?!” Like ummm how did you get her interested in you Roger?

·                     Then the whole thing descends into chaos and its brilliant and everyone’s shouting and singing and Collins sees his old coat and he’s like fuck you but Angel wants to buy him one so she’s there haggling and Mark is filming them both again as they hug in the snow and it’s so fucking cute

·                     “WHich way to the stage!”

·                     LUCIE JONES DESERVES A TONY AWARD, AN OSCAR AND A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. I CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO DESCRIBE HER PERFORMANCE. IT IS OUT OF THE PARK. WE ARE SOMEWHERE IN THE STRATOSPHERE OF BRILLIANCE AND PURE TALENT. THE NOTE SHE HOLDS FOR HALF A MINUTE, THE MOOING, THE ECHO, THE DEPTH OF HER VOICE, THE FUCKING MILK DRINKING, THE AUDIENCE REACTION. I LIVE FOR IT. And I used to think that song was weird af and now… I’d dance to it at my wedding

·                     WHEN MAUREEN IS PRETENDING TO DRINK THE MILK FROM ELSIE’S UDDER AND COLLINS TURNED TO MARK AND SAID “Hey Mark, d’you remember this?!” AND ON THE LAST NIGHT WE WERE THERE IT WAS SO LOUD AND I FUCKING CHOKED AND THEY WERE JUST ON THE VERY EDGE OF COMING OUT OF CHARACTER. BILLY WAS JUST GLARING AT RYAN AND HE WAS GRINNING AWAY TO HIMSELF AND GOD BLESS THE WRITERS FOR ADDING THAT IN BECAUSE IT’S NOT IN THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT OR THE FILM EITHER AND IT IS T H E BEST THING THAT EVER COULD’VE HAPPENED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. SERIOUSLY.

·                     Watching everyone else through Maureen’s performance is also the cutest thing. Angel and Collins were clicking along and Mimi was trying to teach Roger the Over The Moon dance

·                     Also Joanne had me giggling the whole way through. She was stood in the background holding the boombox and whenever Maureen sings the chorus she holds it up so the backing track sounds louder. But she was wearing this beige/brown roll neck under her coat and as she lifted the boombox her coat would come open and I swear I thought I was seeing skin and I was like JOANNE!?? Where are your clothes woman!

·                     Anyway… That whole song was legendary and I can’t believe I’m so blessed to have seen it.

·                     Then we head straight into La Vie Boheme which is a personal favourite anyway but it was just to die for. All the movement of the tables, the hand clapping, the kissing, seeing Lucie Jones’ bum three times, everyone basically pretending to bang and masturbate and Mark riding Collins like a motorbike and Mimi and Angel’s friendship and just the purity of believing in something and being something that other people can’t understand. It’s a beautiful song.

·                     And we take a break from it to watch Roger and Mimi sing their lil duet an that’s really cute and sweet and HOW HAS IT TAKEN THEM THIS LONG I SWEAR TO ALL THE GODS

·                     Ok so during I Should Tell You everyone else is frozen in the background sitting round a table but on the Friday night, Ryan was just standing and then one of the swings came in and he just beckoned her over and they hugged and he gave her a lil kiss on the forehead and that was the cutest thing ever

·                     And on the Saturday night they’d been having issues with the tables and then Maureen’s chair was too close to another bit of the stage so she couldn’t pull it out to sit down so she was just in the background wrestling with it and it was just so funny

·                     And then we come crashing back into La Vie Boheme B which I’m currently trying to learn all the words too because it’s brilliant and beautiful and it’s for everyone, everyone should be accepted and loved an-THE RIOT CONITUES

·                     Yeah… One minute you’re all singing and then BAM Mark’s there shouting about a riot and the Christmas tree is burning down and Mimi and Roger are kissing in the rafters

·                     “The snow dances”

·                     Seriously everything Mark says is poetic af

·                     VIVA. LA VIE. BOHEME.

'Mississippi. An Anthropocene River' explores the vast but patchy area of the Mississippi in its changing spatio-temporal formations. Its aim is to open up this archival landscape to a larger public and make it legible as a critical zone of habitation and long-term interaction between humans and the environment. From October 2018 to November 2019, several interdisciplinary groups of researchers, artists and stakeholders from civil society will investigate the river basin to develop local approaches to issues of global change and together will forge new methods of transdisciplinary research and education. The Project is developed and organized by Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (MPIWG).

PROJECT

The Mississippi River Basin is an immense space continually being reshaped by human activities. As a central axis through the continent and a catchment for ecological, industrial and social realities it presents a multifaceted topography of the Anthropocene, the geological epoch of humankind. It designates a peculiar heterogeneous space in which genuinely anthropocenic problems, possibilities and hopes intersect in a unique way, triangulating humans, grandiose ecosystems and the forceful advancement of economic-technological infrastructures.

The river’s meandering path has carved out an iconic landscape in US mythology and has become a symbol for human impact. Barely a river but more of a floodplain before it was massively dredged in the 20th century, the Mississippi river has become a major industrial and agricultural corridor that cuts through the “heartland” of the United States.

Through time, the peculiar river and its ecology has evolved as a constantly shifting ecosystem, a catchment of cultures, a dividing line, a water highway for resources and goods, and a sink for pollutants. From the logging and mining zones in the Upper River area to the high technology and petrochemical centers in the Delta; from the industrial agricultural landscapes of the Midwest to the “dead zones” in the Gulf of Mexico; from the historic transportation network enabling the egregious trade of human forced labor to the social injustices of poverty and deindustrialization today—the Mississippi is a symptom and object of investigation for the radical impact humans inflict on the Earth.

Mississippi. An Anthropocene River is developed and organized by HKW and MPIWG in collaboration with numerous international partners. It is a part of the Anthropocene Curriculum (since 2013), an international long-term project for experimental forms of Anthropocene research and education.

Waiting for the show to start and admiring the amazing view from my Circle seat

Twenty years after RENT first premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop to a sell out audience, the musical rock opera is still going from strength to strength. With a superb cast, awe inspiring set and vocals that send a shiver down your spine, the musical follows a group of impoverished artists struggling with drugs, HIV and being homeless in 1990’s New York, Jonathan Larson’s masterpiece captures the haunting effects of HIV looming over the artistic scene that was developing in the East Village.

Thankfully, Larson’s score and story still breaks the hearts of those who watch it thanks to the nurturing hand of Bruce Guthrie and his hugely talented cast. The ensemble actors play each part with emotion, humour and tremendous commitment, with vocal solo’s so impressive they received cheers and applause mid-song.

The singing from the principles provides the audience with a melting pot of styles from baritone to rock and R & B. The cast performed the energetic, rip-roaring number “La Vie Boheme” and then slid effortlessly into the slower much more intimate “I Should Tell You” with ease. The heated break-up song turned diva sing-off “Take Me Or Leave Me” between lesbian lovers Joanne and Maureen, was a breath-taking display of the epic scale of both actors’ vocal abilities worthy of a very special mention.

The set, designed by Anna Fleischle, is a vision of ultimate grime brought to life in a tangle of scaffolding, neon lights and graffiti on three manoeuvrable and adaptable pieces of set which transform into derelict apartments, effervescent cafe’s and New York street corners to bring to life Larson’s story.

I personally had very high expectations for this production I have long been a fan of the show with the soundtrack having a permanent home on my playlist. I saw this production with a large group of friends, all of us members of our local Operatic and Musical Theatre Society and the majority of us massive fans, so the show had a lot to live up to. That said I left the auditorium hugging two of my fellow audience members who were in tears and I had sobbed through the majority of the second act, we were emotional wrecks and loving it. It blew my expectations out of the water and then some and I admit I would happily be the first in line to watch it a second or even a third time around.

RENT’s run at The Curve Theatre, Leicester has come to an end however the tour continues with performances across the UK until the 27th May 2017.

In the early 90s, two creative projects about a group of friends living in New York were going through difficult gestation periods. One resulted in the television series “Friends”; the other in the award-winning musical Rent. Whilst the strongest drug in the former was endless cups of coffee, the latter featured lots of drugs including heroin and AZT as several the characters in Rent are suffering from HIV/AIDS. But deep down they’ve got a lot in common with interconnected, fluid relationships that are constantly changing between the friends and underscoring it all are real, resilient friendships.

The other thing they have in common is they’re both enduring and have captured the imagination of more than the generation that they were aimed at. Friends ran for ten years and is still being shown all over the world in re-runs and this new production of Rent celebrates the musical’s 20th anniversary.

Back around 1992, composer/lyricist Jonathan Larson wanted to transform musical theatre and write an identifiable rock and roll musical that featured contemporary life as he knew it. He and playwright Billy Aronson came up with an idea of basing a rock musical on Puccini’s opera La Boheme but substituting the struggling Bohemian’s of 19th century Paris for the creative people he knew who were finding it hard to survive on the lower east side of New York City. He also realised that he could substitute the shadow of tuberculosis that permeates the opera for HIV/AIDS and a rock musical was born.

Rent tells the story of wannabe filmmaker Mark Cohen (played by Billy Cullum) and room-mate, struggling musician/songwriter Roger Davis (Ross Hunter). They’re squatting without regular power or heat in a dilapidated building owned by Benjamin Coffin III (Javar La’Trail Parker), an old friend who’s married well and has become a property magnate. At the start of the musical, they’re joined by another friend, Tom Collins (Ryan O’Gorman) who’s been beaten up and robbed by a street gang because he’s gay. Mark is going through a tough time as his girlfriend Maureen (Lucie Jones) has left him not for another man but for Joanne (Shanay Holmes). Roger has been trying to write a song for months and is failing miserably. Along the journey, they’re soon joined by Angel (Harrison Clark), a drag queen who helps Tom after his beating and the two soon become a couple.

Then echoing La Boheme, Mimi (Philippa Stefani) who lives in the apartment above Roger’s, knocks on his door asking for a light for her candle. In the opera, Mimi wants the light so she can see her way around – whilst the Mimi in Rent almost certainly wants it so she can dissolve her drugs before shooting up. A relationship soon forms between the two but it turns out to be a turbulent one as we follow the story over the next twelve months or so before it comes to its inevitable conclusion.

Rent is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicals of the last thirty years or so with more memorable songs than any musical written during that period. Larson who had been mentored by Stephen Sondheim would have assumed the mantle of his mentor were it not for the fact that after struggling to get the musical produced, died unexpectedly on the morning of the show’s first preview on January 25th 1996 – a sad loss not only to his family and friends but to the world of musical theatre.

[See image gallery at http://ift.tt/1FpwFUw] This 20th-anniversary production of the musical does Larson proud. Bruce Guthrie directs with a deft touch keeping it all together. Anna Fleischle’s set is a superb rendering of a grim New York squat with its metallic, industrial, scaffolding feel and all the other technical aspects of the show are spot-on especially Lee Proud’s choreography which is energetic and modern and fits in perfectly with the overall feel of the production.

But as in all successful shows, it’s all down to the casting and in this production, they’ve got it totally right. Although there are the aforementioned main characters, you get the feeling this is a real company of performers and it would be unfair to pick out anyone from the cast to spotlight as they all work so wonderfully together. They all sing, dance and act wonderfully with some of the ensemble playing four or more characters and are a joy to behold – their energy lights up the theatre and has the audience whooping with delight.

Ultimately Rent is a show about love and friendship that is splendidly served by this excellent production – go see it whilst you can.
