Most of my mushroom paintings are of fantasy shrooms, but this one is real! Amanita Caesarea - a real hottie that I have yet to find in the wild. Getting this finished sucked and I’m glad it’s over! ⚰️ I initially sketched this over a year ago, sat on it for months cause I wanted to do it up big on a panel, realized I would need to spend hundreds on new supplies to make that happen, kept sitting on it, finally decided to just paint it like usual on paper, and have been slowly chipping away at it in between commissions, and trying (and mostly failing) to film the process. Hopefully posting a painting Reel later this week, TBD… I will release prints of this soon, stay tuned!

Today, we're bringing you a special interview between Shannon Knight, author of Insiders, and cover artist Isa Backhaus! Read on to hear how this beautiful cover came to be.

📚First off, I adore the cover. Thank you again for your work. You perfectly captured the story elements and mood that I requested.

For the cover of Insiders, what was the most challenging part to paint and what was the part that was the most fun?

🎨The most challenging part was the texture of Sachi, and I put a lot of thought into the design. I wanted to create something that looked like a moving and changing creature. I think the way the suit looks is more like a life form itself. I love the idea of the suit being a character, so that was a very important part to get right.

📚Your nebula in space is so luminous. The colors tie so beautifully with the palette of Sachi, her plant suit, and the surrounding plants. The colors are so elegant. How did you go about choosing this palette?

🎨I have always been fascinated by green and red nebulae. They look so natural and biological and seem like a contradiction to their surroundings. So they were actually the first thing that came to my mind when I read the descriptions for the cover.

📚When you shared the sketch, I asked for more types of epiphytes. I wanted a miniature biome in space, but I worried that my request would overturn the balance of your design or color palette. Like you gave me a modern design, and I turned it into rococo! But, of course, you produced something perfect. How did you go about making those changes?

🎨The miniature biome was also a challenge because there were a lot of textures and values that could easily get out of balance, as you suggested. So it was a lot of work to balance them out. I looked at a lot of photos of plants and moss to understand their texture and design. It also helped that Sachi's hair and skin tone is really white, so the contrast and focus naturally moved to her face.

📚Speaking more broadly about illustration and book covers, what are the special challenges or delights in creating illustrations for novel covers in particular?

🎨In order to connect with the author, I have to interpret a lot of abstract thoughts and emotions, so I have to think like the author to be able to paint the vision that does justice to the cover.

📚What is a common misconception about your job that you wish people understood better?

🎨Due to the AI situation, I think it becomes even more apparent that a lot of people think that illustrators just draw pretty pictures and that's it. The reality is that a picture, like a book, is a medium with a lot of subtle communication. Everything has meaning and purpose. The illustrator places all the elements with an intention and interpretation that he has collected over the years of his life. It is something that only they can paint because of the memories and experiences that only they have lived.

It is a truly human way of communicating. Aesthetic means to feel and sense something and that is something only living beings can do.

In celebration of entering my creative agency bag, I felt inspired to create the team of a small digital agency. Top row (left to right): Greg is a timid but vibrant graphic designer. He started his career producing digital social content for pennies and eventually met Estelle online. She took a chance on him, and his talents have flourished since. Shannon is Estelle's best friend and former roommate. She was employee 2, lending her unique perspective on brand development to the establishing projects of the agency. Chester is the most recent hire on the team, and undeniably grossly overpaid (thought he would argue that he is making a humbling amount). Not only is he one of the most cutting-edge and remarkable creative minds in the brand space, but his level of professional recognition has brought undeniable traffic to the agency – making his occasional outbursts and odd requests minor in the grand scheme of things. Bottom row (left to right): Estelle is the founder of the agency, taking the courageous leap towards unionizing after 5 years in-house at what she thought was her dream job. Not only did she convince some of the company's hottest talent to jump ship and join forces, but she also has built one of the most dynamic up-and-coming agencies in just 3 years. Patrick was one of the early members of the team, leaving his dream job alongside Estelle to invest in her dream. This comes as no surprise to anyone who has witnessed their passionate banter and existential discussions that could last hours if you let them. Starting out as a meek and kind intern, Viola was the first person to make Estelle realize the impact she's made in the design space. Viola's blind adoration for the agency not only stroked Estelle's ego but has remained a constant reminder of the community her agency has created beyond standard client relationships. In her two years at the agency, Viola has scaled from part-time intern all the way to full-time account manager.

hulllooooo! 2. How did you get the idea to write this? [picking my fairy tale retelling bc I like this answer] I was visiting some besties in Richmond, VA, and I had some time before my flight left after, so I stopped in VMFA and they had a (digital, sadly) exhibit on Russian legends and art that included this art piece: A Knight at the Crossroads by Viktor Vasnetsov

as well as an interactive telling of a related fairytale, Tsarevitch Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf. But it was this image of the knight specifically that caught my attention. I wanted to tell his story. I wanted to know what he chose after reading the inscription and where he went. I am a huge fan of Shannon Hale's The Goose Girl and how she turned nonsense into a beautiful narrative, so when I read Tsarevitch Ivan and got to all those Weird Details, I knew I wanted to try my hand at novelizing it in a fashion after her wonderful style. Tentatively titled, The Madness and the Golden Bird.

5. Is there any scene you're excited about writing? Scenes are always the thing I get excited to write. I hold them in my mind's and heart's eye until I could burst, I usually write them down before everything else happens and then rewrite them how they need to fit once the story itself develops. I've written an early version of the scene, but there's a moment between the Wolf and the Ivan character near the climax that's all self-sacrifice and breaking of enchantments and I can't wait to properly flesh that out.

15. Do you have any unwritten scene you think about a lot? There's a princess in the story, and my princess and my Ivan are dear friends before the adventure begins. I haven't delved into that much, and I really want to make their friendship deep and easy and inevitable. So I think about scenes between them a lot.

An Alternative to the Studio System?: Indie Animation Forges Ahead [Part 2]

Otherwise, Shannon Mowatt's 16-minute animatic of Revamped, has been released in advance of the full animated pilot. It is an upcoming short queer film about four high school sophomores who deal with school life, vampires, and the supernatural world.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the eleventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on July 15, 2022.

There's the Lackadaisy film about 1920s gangster cats, based on Tracy J. Butler's webcomic. Another series, Outcasts, has cats as characters. Shou Tuzi's Tallyho! series continues to develop. It is inspired by steampunk, fantastique, and other media. Tuzi's studio, Skull Hare Studio, is also working on Arthur: The Timeless Knight.

Daniel is continuing to pursue his action adventure series, Lumeon Lands, which has begin production. These series are important to highlight when Hollywood continues to end projects and sack animators. Some have put hope in indie animation, noting it has the promise to allow creators to have "creative control" unlike working under major studios.

While there are many indie animations I could mention. [6] However, I'd like to focus on a few series in development. One of those is Sam Sawyer's SALEM, also known as Salem or S.A.L.E.M.: The Secret Archive of Legends, Enchantments, and Monsters. In May, SpectroliteAAA, the lead storyboard artist said that she could talk about it soon, but not yet. In January, Sawyer, when asked by a fan, said the same thing.

The series has been fully funded. The now-fulfilled Kickstarter defines the series as an animated story about "a cryptid with a big heart and even bigger questions, on a quest to discover their true origins".

Apart from having high-profile voice actors like Laura Bailey, Rob Paulsen, and Adam McAarthur, a tweet from the show's account confirmed Petra as asexual, Salem (who is also non-binary) as pansexual, and Oliver as gay. The series has Randy Abrams as executive producer. It is being animated with help from Surfer Jack Productions, a company said to specialize in "ingenious storytelling". The company was founded by animation industry veterans Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, Lance LeCompte, and Bernie Petterson.

There are other series in development. This includes Georden Whitman's pilot named Port by the Sea on two kids who are "sailing the seas to fix a now broken moon", Matt Acuña's fantastical adventure The Garden Age, and the Far-Fetched Show, an animated series "about a rock band of misfits" by Ashley Nichols and Dave Capdevielle.

In addition, there's a demon/vampire themed series in the process entitled Bloodgore, the psychological horror dramedy named Please Stay Tuned, the ghost-themed Ghost Hunt, a sci-fi themed SpaceAges, and many more. These are a small sampling of the indie animated series out there. [7] These persist despite the problem of distribution and funding to "make original stuff", and possible iffiness of crowdsourcing, as writer Chris Hill pointed out.

Port by the Sea's pilot will likely come out sometime later this year. The Far-Fetched Show is also moving ahead, with comics to go with the series like Wild Card. The Nichols' Patreon notes that a lyrics video for the series band, Sesemoid, is coming out later this year. This also noted they are still working on the pilot. Currently, there is wonderful fan art of the show's characters, including putting them in a Steven Universe setting, and much more.

The fact that Port by the Sea has over 1400 followers and Far-Fetched Show has over 67,600 followers, along with 406 Patreons of Nichols, proves what animator LanceArts pointed out: that the indie animation scene is "exploding with greater popularity now more than ever."

More episodes of Alpha Betas are currently in production, with recording for new episodes. Four episodes are set to be released in Fall/Winter 2022. Additionally, Lucha Vandross is fundraising for various indie animated series. This includes those inspired by 1980s Hong Kong films (Project Icarus and Project Icarus X) and a modern take on Robin Hood. The latter is about friends "robbing the rich and giving it to the poor" (Samson). [8] Animator 9Hammer is actively releasing series in Newgrounds, of all places. This includes series such as Chaotic Heart and Solace, with new episodes in production.

Others, like Warlord-of-Noodles, have ongoing series as well, which is also posted on YouTube and has a Patreon. Series like Deep States, by Molly, are on YouTube. There is the exciting 2d indie anime in development entitled Broken Beat, made by animators of prominent anime series, like Creative Theory. The series is about a protagonist, Sin, tasked with stopping the reign of the creator god, and challenged by an "endless conflict between humans and manifestors". Sin masters his form along the way.

Newgrounds is a weird place. There's a lot of terrible (and amateurish content) there, mixed with sexual content. It is more than what would YouTube would permit, and includes pornographic material. Apart from the series on hiatus by 9Hammer, Beyond the Fog, there's The Looter, and Zack and Alex. The latter, by Jayevin Abad, had its pilot posted on YouTube as well. Otherwise, there are various other series, films, and more, which have aired on the site. [9] Some shows I've noted before in this post, and elsewhere, like Ollie and Scoops, Eddsworld, Tales of Alethrion, and Satina all have pages on the site.

Apart from Newgrounds, are further series in development. This includes The Art Of Murder, produced by an Australian indie 2D animation studio named Choc Chip. It is produced by Anokhi Somaia and directed by Nirali Somaia. Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli are the series composers.

The Art of Murder is a murder mystery, musical, and pop culture parody where "sketchbook characters come to life" when the clock strikes midnight. It features voice actors like Lizzie Freeman, who also voices a character in Gods' School, Lauren Lopez, who founded a popular online musical theatre company named Team Starkid. There's also Joey Richter (part of the same theatre company), Joey Bizinger, a well-known Japanese-Australian voice actor, YouTuber, and more, and Megan Lee, a Korean-American singer-songwriter. 

There's further projects of note. This includes various series by LGBTQ creators. [10] For instance, there's an animated series such as Scrappers, Swift Spark and the Defense Five, Birdboys, and Novas. Scrappers and Birdboys are by trans women, Charlie Gultiano-Wyton and Danielle Maxine specifically. Swift Spark and the Defense Five is by a trans man, Pan. Novas is by a queer and trans artist, Jesse. Scrappers is being produced by Gultiano-Wyton's animation studio, Variation Media.

Swift Spark and the Defense Five is by artist and animator, Pan, who loves Phineas & Ferb, and is based on a comic of the same name. Birdboys is by artist and animator, Danielle, with some teasers posted on her YouTube channel. Novas is the personal project of Jesse, a SCAD student, who posted a casting call for the animation on Tik Tok. What Avara, mentioned earlier in this article, stated is relevant here: support for indie creators is necessary if you "want to see diversity in animation". Part of that is LGBTQ representation.

The son of Irish parents James Jebusa Shannon was born in Auburn, New York. Aged sixteen he camed to London in 1878 and studied at the Government Art Training School, South Kensington. He made his debut at the Royal Academy aged 19 when he exhibited a portrait of the Hon. Horatia Stopford in 1881, and Mrs Henry Bourke in 1882, both portraits of Ladies in Waiting having been commissioned by Queen Victoria. Although he received his art education in England, Shannon was touched by the current fashion for square-brush handling which emanated from the Paris ateliers. By the mid-1890s he was considered 'as virtually court painter for Violet, Duchess of Rutland' (Kenneth McConkey, Edward Portraits, Woodbridge, 1987, p. 119). She was an amateur artist remarkable for her precocious talent and was exhibiting professionally by the age of twenty-two at the Grosvenor Gallery, newly opened by her cousin Sir Coutts Lindsay. She was one of the most brilliant members of the aristocratic and aesthetic circle known as 'The Souls' and her outstanding beauty inspired several of the leading artists of the day including Jacques Emile Blanche and George Frederic Watts, although Shannon was her favourite.

George Moore acknowledged him as 'the man born to paint English duchesses' despite considering him socially ambitious and it is said that wives lingered in front of his work and demanded of their husbands 'Why can't you afford to let me be painted by Mr Shannon?'. He was a founder member of the New English Art Club in 1886 and exhibited there under Whistler's regime but resigned in 1892. During the 1890s his style broadened under the influence of Sargent, so much so that he was even considered by some as his rival. Shannon was awarded medals for portraiture in Paris, Berlin and Vienna, and his paintings The Flower Girl and Phil May were purchased by the Chantrey Bequest for the Tate Gallery in 1901. In 1901 he became the President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and he became a full Academician in 1909 He was knighted in 1922.

It is likely that The Silver Ship dates from the 1890s as during that decade there were a number of small-scale fashion revivals including the leg-of-mutton sleeve which became increasingly voluminous in the mid-1890s. These 'balloon' sleeves, very much in evidence here, were often worn off-the-shoulder and terminated in deep forearm cuffs of the sort which had been popular in the reign of Louis Philippe.

Shannon painted several works of this period in which the subject was in an 'action pose'. For this he was considered 'an artist and a portrait painter afterwards' by Lewis Hind writing in the Studio (1896; vol. VII, p. 68). The lady in The Silver Ship is as yet unidentified and poses holding the object of the title. Aesthetic harmony is of paramount importance over and above likeness and it was this aesthetic interest that gave Shannon his international standing and recognition.
