Thoughts on Scott Lobdell's Superman run?
Rocafort's art kept me reading.
Tumblr media
Rocafort's depiction of Krypton, the Fortress even the armor which no one outside of him and Jim Lee sold me on, all look great! They all had a flavor to them that we don't usually get on the Superman books. He drew Clark with a youthful appearance that suited his age, and I wish going forward artists would emulate New 52 Superman's design for when they want to draw a "young" Superman. Unfortunately Rocafort isn't a fast artist given his style, which meant he needed lots of filler. Still I powered through the filler simply because the issues he did draw were always worth it for me.
Storywise though? It was bad. Lobdell was trying to do the Johns technique of taking old Silver Age concepts and "modernizing" them, but he wasn't as good as it as Johns was. We'd get cool ideas like Kryptonian dragons or Superman benching the weight of the entire planet, but it all rang hollow. There was no real heart or underlying theme just an excuse for the artist to draw cool shit. Early New 52 felt a lot like 90s Image and Superman was hit especially hard in that regard. H'el as a character is nothing but a cool looking Bizarro knockoff, and he is the big villain of the run. The Court of Owls had a point to make about Scott Snyder's relationship with Snyder's hometown and also a point to make about Bruce's relationship with Gotham and his wealth. Couldn't tell you what Lobdell was trying to do with H'el on a thematic level.
Also it's no secret that Lobdell would execute on editorial edicts that other writers wouldn't, which meant he was implementing orders from on high that didn't result in good stories, but did check the list on whatever Didio or Harras wanted. Only Shay Veritas has sorta outlived his run (which is good because I love the concept of Superman befriending the world's smartest woman in contrast to his relationship with the world's smartest man), and unlike Morrison or even Pak's Action Comics runs I haven't seen anyone step up to bat for this run as underrated.
I loved this moment this though:
Tumblr media
Clark gives a big speech about the value of truth, justice, and the American Way in the context of real journalism bowing to corporate interests - hoping to rally his fellow reporters to walk out with him in protest - and no one cares!... except Cat Grant. The one person you'd think wouldn't give a damn about those things, does. This is an unironically great Superman moment, one that I think really does capture his appeal as a character, showing how he can inspire others, especially those you'd think couldn't be reached, while showing the cost of that attitude too. Clark and Cat going on to found a blog was actually not a bad idea in the context of "what does journalism look like in the 21st century?" which most Superman runs ignore.
Even having Clark and Lois butt heads over that isn't a bad idea. Clark as a journalist is mainly concerned with his own stories, while Lois as a producer/editor has to look out for the organization as a whole. Clark only has to worry about himself but Lois has to worry about "if the paper isn't profitable and I have to lay people off, what's going to happen to these people in a field where the number of journalism positions is steadily decreasing?" which is a recipe for good organic conflict between the two! It didn't have to be bad or forced for those two to be at odds because a journalist and an editor/producer have different concerns. It just... wasn't good.
Tumblr media
Sure looked pretty at times though.

I really loved how the final arc of Terrifics was proabbly the first REAL time Plastic Man was shown to be a good father who was always there for his son. There’s been bits and pieces before but it wasn’t as pronounced as in here.

RHATO/HiC fix it
But the dumbest thing about RHATO 42, or at least on par with the final words, is the casual way Jason says, oh, right, Wally West killed Roy, but it was an accident so it's okay.
I'm not saying he should be all "I'm gonna kill Wally" but this? Is a pod person's reaction. This is a reaction of, I dunno, a person who did visit the Sanctuary before it all went to hell, to, like, smuggle Roy out, and planting a fake clone body, like they did with Wally.
I mean, where Jason got the technology to time travel and clone people? Clone people are easy, he is buddies with smartest woman in the world Shay Veritas, who also cloned herself for about 40 times. And time travel is probably a work of Babe in Arms, Jason does have a history of exploiting kids in his charge, see: Vessel.
So my take on it: Jason manipulates the kids into time traveling into the past, kidnapping a shit ton of heroes, staging it as a perfect crime cover up. Nobody is going to search for them if nobody realises they're missing. That's how Jason sold the kids on time-travelling project, probably letting them think they're going to use heroes as their personal army or other nefarious purposes.
But after they all get back to the future, it turns out Red Hood lied, surprise. But kids don't have time to get mad 'cause the thing with the sky we saw since a couple of issues back. Shit gets serious and all the kids have to team up when all the heroes to save the world. Because, you know, you cannot take over the world if it ended.

You've expressed not wanting to keep having Batman be the one Clark goes to for tech advice & have Steel to be that guy instead because he’s the supergenuis of the fam, but what what do you think of the other supergenuises in the Supermythos, especially the ones he's canonically gone to for scientific consultation across Superman media, DCAU, DCEU, DC comics, ect, like Leo Quintum, Emil Hamilton, Karen Lou Faulkner, ect., either as occasional consultants or as a full-time team that back him up?
Running through the list:
Leo Quintum
Tumblr media
Obviously he's very cool and yeah I absolutely would love to see him show up in the mainline. Make Leo the head of STAR Labs, that group could use a figurehead. Have him be the one roping Superman into doing cool science experiments for the benefit of mankind, basically a good version of Lex or a non-powered version of Reed Richards interested purely in SCIENCE! An endless source of fascination for him is the wider "forces" that have been discovered in the Age of Superheroes: The Speed Force, Emotional Spectrum, Bleed, Multiverse, Dark Multiverse, etc. Increasing understanding of how these phenomena work is his main focus and he loves getting Superman on board to help. Superman also goes to Leo when he needs help understanding some new experience he's encountered.
Leo is a good guy at heart but he's so wrapped up in his experiments that he tends to be disconnected from the public. He doesn't see anything wrong with scientists experimenting on themselves as long as it doesn't endanger anyone else for instance, and he doesn't care about the finances of how to run STAR either. He just wants to make the next big great discovery and he'll embrace almost any method that delivers that (within limits). Superman should act as his conscience, reigning him in when he goes too far, and reminding him to ensure the wellbeing of his underlings is accounted for.
Professor Emil Hamilton
Tumblr media
Hamilton is someone whose comic trajectory I actually enjoyed, despite it pissing off his comic creator. Do like the idea of him going from supervillain, to ally of Superman, and then either ending up working for CADMUS after he sees how fallible Superman is like in the DCAU, or full return to Ruin's supervillain status and going after John Henry Irons for "replacing" him. Hamilton as the "Two-Face" equivalent for Superman's Rogues works for me, you're never really sure what side of the hero/villain moral divide he'll fall on. Even as an ally his morals should be grey at best.
Karen Lou Faulkner
Tumblr media
Sadly I must confess I have no real opinions on her. Faulkner doesn't really interest me that much, she's a Z-Lister from the Triangle Era and if she never showed up again I'd be completely indifferent. Were she to show up again I'd have her in the employ of STAR Labs as an example of how fucking weird those geeks are. Experimenting on yourself and being transformed is commonplace, so Faulkner fits in. Copy the "Professor" era of Hulk and have Faulkner walking around in her Rampage form directing underlings or conducting experiments with nobody batting an eye.
Dr. Shay Veritas
Tumblr media
Lobdell's run had lousy execution but he had some good ideas and Shay was one of them. Lex is the world's smartest man, so who is the smartest woman? Creating her and making her an ally of Superman is such an obvious concept I'm shocked no one else thought of it. Have her co-run STAR Labs with Quintum, with her being the more grounded down to Earth genius who has to keep the madness of STAR in check while also still running her own experiments. Personally I'd make her the one fascinated by superheroes and supervillains, those are what she studies as much as she can. Veritas is more interested in individuals than Quintum is, and that's the big difference between the two scientifically. When Superman needs help on handling a supervillain, Shay is who he contacts.
Shay also is the one who keeps the lights on by acquiring funding for STAR which Leo can't be bothered with. Some of her funding sources are a bit dubious morally, I would have her be the one who builds the new Stryker's Station in the Phantom Zone to hold Superman's Rogues for example. Shay and Superman like each other, but Superman is a bit nervous that Shay may end up like her male counterpart Lex given her fascination with supervillains, and willingness to bend the law where she believes it's justified. Like Leo, Superman is her conscience, there to voice objections when he believes she's gone too far.

1.Supergirl fancast, Lana Parrilla as Shay Veritas
Au: Weeks after the reveal Lena goes to a local bar after work to de-stress. Where she orders a scotch and soda. “Rough day at work” the girl beside her says. “You have no idea” Lena chuckles. “What do you do?” the woman asks. “That’s hard to answer since I do many things”. The two strike up a conversation. The woman reveals she is a scientist and the two bond over it. They talk for the next hour and just as the woman is about to leave Lena stops her” Wait, I didn’t even catch your name?” Its Shay the woman replies Shay Veritas.
I really want Lana to be in Supergirl
