When Tom told you that he wouldn’t be getting leave to come back home for the holidays, you were absolutely gutted. Christmas with your best friend has been a tradition for as long as you can remember. When you were kids, you and Tom wrote your letters to Santa together, handing them to Mr. Bennett as he went off to work, demanding he mail them to the North Pole as quickly as possible. As you got older and learned that the letters to Santa were really just going to your parents, the two of you found new ways to occupy yourselves. Looking up YouTube tutorials on how to build gingerbread houses, ice skating, sledding, anything and everything two crazy kids could get up to.

By the time you were in high school, Tom had started dating while you chose to remain single. But even then? Your Christmas traditions were given priority, which irked many of his girlfriends. Well, you’d probably be pissed too if your boyfriend said Christmas needed to be spent with his “best girl”. He would come round to your house every Christmas Eve, the two of you exchanging gifts, and then stop by again for tea with your family on Christmas Day, while you joined him, Mr. Bennett, and Lois for Christmas dinner. It’s been like this for as long as you can remember. But it seems this year, your precious tradition will be broken.

Tom watches you as you ramble away on FaceTime, holding your phone up, inadvertently giving him a nice eyeful of your cleavage as you walk toward your flat’s tiny little kitchen, grabbing a drink from your fridge.

“So then he says he’s going to take me out to the best restaurant in town, and I’m just thinking, alright, sure, sounds good.”

Tom grins, laying back on his cot as he watches you through the screen of his phone, “Oh, a posh lad, huh? Where’d he take you? Harrod’s for tea or something like that?”

“Tom, he took me to Nando’s!”

Tom bursts into laughter at the melodramatic tone of your voice, “He said he was taking you somewhere fancy and he took you to Nando’s?”

“No, you see, I would’ve been fine with that part, you know I love the Peri wraps and chips,” you say, flopping onto your own bed after returning upstairs, “Nando’s is my favorite. But I placed my order, innit? And he looks at me and asks if I’m really going to eat all that! All I got was a bloody wrap, chips, and corn!”

Tom’s jaw drops, “Are you serious? What a prick! That’s not even that much! Cheap bastard!”

“Oh, it gets worse,” you groan, “He refused to order himself chips and kept going after mine!”

Tom snickers, shaking his head, “The audacity.”

“I know!” You pause before looking at him and sighing sadly, “You really aren’t coming home for Christmas, huh?”

Tom sees the dejected expression on your face and it breaks his heart. He nods, murmuring how sorry he is, how he’ll do his very best to call you on Christmas. He hates the way he knows you’re about to cry, with how your lower lip is trembling, eyes watering. Every fiber of his being is screaming at him to tell you what he’s wanted to tell you for the last eight years.

That he’s desperately, pathetically in love with you. That all the other girls have been nothing but flings, a way to forget about the one girl he never thought he could have. The love of his life. His beloved best friend.

“‘Fraid not, love,” he smiles apologetically, “You’ll give your mum a kiss from old Tom, yeah?” He groans slightly when his CO calls lights out, meeting your gaze through the phone and speaking softly, “That’s me. You… Promise me you won’t be too sad, yeah?”

“I’ll try,” you mumble, “Happy Christmas, Tom. Miss you.”

“Miss you too, love. Happy Christmas. Give me a smile?”

You shake your head, “Nuh uh.”

Tom chuckles, “Come on, love. Just one smile for your favorite sailor?” You take your index fingers, pushing your lips up into a fake smile, making Tom let out a hearty laugh, “I suppose that’ll do for now. Love you.”

His heart aches as he hears you say the words back to him before ending the call, thinking to himself that you don’t realize how much he truly means them.

How he’s always meant them.

You’re not particularly enthused when you wake up on Christmas morning to the sound of someone banging on your door. You glance at your phone and see that it reads 6:00AM and let out a groan, calling out at whoever it is to fuck right off. But the banging continues. You reluctantly get out of bed, walking over to your front door, ready to yell at the source of your annoyance.

But when you open the door, you see him.

Tom.

Your jaw drops and you’re immediately struck by how handsome he looks in his navy uniform, his hat perched proudly atop his head, that quintessential Tom Bennett grin brightening his face.

“Morning, Miss.”

You feel your eyes begin to water, overcome by emotion as you throw your arms around him, “You cheeky little shit! You said you weren’t going to be home! You’re going to give me a heart attack one of these days, you know!”

Tom feels your tears soaking his uniform jacket as he buries his face in your shoulder, embracing you as tightly as he can, “I’m sorry. We got the news last minute. Hardly even had time to pack before I was landing at Heathrow. Then I came straight to you.”

“I can tell,” you say, wiping at your eyes, “You smell like an airplane, go shower.”

Tom moves his hands to your cheeks, squishing them together and making you yelp, “You love the way I smell.”

“Why are you squeezing my cheeks like when we were little, huh? Arse.”

Without a hint of shame, Tom grins at you proudly, continuing to squish your face before letting go and sauntering off toward your shower, “You love it. Anyway, I’ll go and take that shower, but the minute I get out…” He takes his hat off to point it at you, revealing his buzzcut which is… Surprisingly cute? “You’re all mine.”

You roll your eyes, shoving him into the bathroom and closing the door, grinning to yourself like a schoolgirl when he winks at you just as he disappears from sight. You rush to your bedroom, changing into something a bit more presentable than your pajamas, running a brush through your hair and applying some light makeup. It’s not because you like Tom or anything.

That would be ridiculous. He’s your best friend. It’s Tom, the biggest flirt in all of the UK who always proudly goes on about how he’s not a one-woman kind of man.

You head back out to the kitchen and put your kettle on, glancing over at the Christmas tree that remains undecorated. It’s Christmas morning and you don’t have any ornaments on your tree, something that Tom points out the minute he comes out of the bathroom, just a towel wrapped around his waist. You slap your hand over your eyes and scream at him to put on some clothes and be normal for once, listening to the sound of his laughter as he tells you he’s going to, gently moving your hands away when he returns.

“Shall we decorate together?” Tom suggests, “Then maybe we can go round to your parents then see Dad and Lois?”

“Yeah, sure,” you say, smiling at him, noticing that he hasn’t yet let go of your hands, his familiar warmth causing the blood to rush to your face, “It just felt wrong doing it without you, you know?”

He nods, “Yeah, I know, love.”

Tom, of course, decorates the top half of the tree, the giant that he is, while you focus on the lower half. You watch as he places the star on top before coming to wrap an arm around you, pressing a kiss to your temple.

You have to remind yourself to keep breathing. It’s just a chaste, friendly kiss. It doesn’t mean anything more than that to Tom.

Well, until he gives you a smack on the bum as the two of you are leaving your apartment.

What is this boy on today?

The two of you walk toward the only store that’s open on your street to grab a bottle of wine to take to his family’s home and then one for yours. After the elderly woman at the counter bags your things and rings you up, Tom grabs the bags before you can and you slap his shoulder, trying to grab the bag.

He winces at the slap, “Ouch! You’re so mean!”

“Oh, don’t act like such a delicate little daisy,” you sass, “Can’t handle a little smack, sailor boy?”

“I’ll have you know, I am an officer in His Majesty’s Royal Navy. I am the furthest thing from delicate,” Tom pouts before giving you a wicked little smile, leaning in and whispering, his breath warm against your ear, “My body is ripped and hard. Like a real soldier.”

You shove him away, grumbling with annoyance, feeling how warm your cheeks are at his words, “Oh, sod off, you prat.”

The checkout clerk giggles at the two of you, questioning, “How long have you lovebirds been together?”

“Oh,” you fluster, “Um, we’re just friends.”

“Yeah, just friends,” Tom agrees, though you pick up on an undertone of sadness in his voice as he walks toward the door, one mitten-clad hand holding yours.

“Well, ‘just friends’, you’re standing under mistletoe. Don’t want to break a tradition now.”

Your eyes go wide as you look between the woman and Tom, your heart racing at a hundred miles an hour.

“Best friends? Is that all we are?” Tom arches a brow, leaning in close to you, “Because that’s definitely not how I see it. Not at all.”

The way he’s looking at you, with those baby blue eyes, that cheeky little smile, the mistletoe hanging above your heads, it’s almost too much. You gaze up at him, your voice barely above a whisper as you ask.

“Then how do you see it?”

Tom leans in even closer, his breath tickling your face as he murmurs, “Well, the thing is. I can’t help but wonder… What that beautiful mouth of yours would do to me.” He moves closer, his forehead resting against yours, “And those pretty lips are just begging to be kissed. And not by just anyone.” The smirk on his face is betrayed by the earnest vulnerability in his eyes, the emotion heavy in his voice as he speaks, “By your best friend who has been in love with you almost all his life.”

Your eyes water, lips curling up into a smile as you whisper, “You mean it?”

His smile is so sweet that it almost pains you as he nods, “Course I do. You…” His hand moves to the back of your neck, pulling you in so that you are pressed flush up against him, “You’re everything I ever wanted. Everything I’ll ever need. So will you do this poor sailor boy a favor and kiss him? Put him out of his misery?”

He leans in, waiting for you to close the distance, which you do, pressing your lips against his in the sweetest first kiss you’ve ever had. His lips are soft and move against yours with ease, as if this is what you’ve been meant to be doing all along. When the two of you finally pull apart, you see that Tom is blushing, his cheeks an adorable shade of pink. You choose not to tease him, instead, just waiting for him to speak.

His eyes are still closed as he whispers, leaning in, “Can I kiss you again?”

“We’re in public, Tom,” you chastise playfully, “Later, I promise.”

Tom follows after you like a lost puppy, his mitten-clad hand holding onto yours, swinging them together as if the two of you are a couple of kids again, “Oh, come on! Just a little smoochie? A quick one?”

“Only if you promise never to call it a smoochie again.”

He snickers, pulling you into another kiss, arms wrapping around you, snow falling from the sky as you kiss in the middle of the street.

After visiting with both of your families - and dealing with more than a fair bit of teasing from Douglas, Lois, and your own parents - you and Tom enter your apartment, bright smiles on your faces as you turn on some Christmas music and he goes about making the two of you some hot chocolate. He glances over at you, almost dreamily, as you take off your scarf. You give him an amused look, giggling when you catch him staring.

“What’re you looking at me like that for?”

“Me? Nothing,” he grins, “I always look at you like this. You just never noticed.” His voice goes a bit quieter as you walk up to him, standing beside him, “Like a man in love.”

“Yeah?” You whisper, “Suppose I have the look of a woman in love then.”

He nods, “You do. But you know,” he wraps his arms around your waist, squeezing you tight, “I’m definitely way crazier about you than you are about me. There’s always one person madder for the other, and here? It’s me.”

You shake your head as he kisses your neck, hands moving under your shirt, “Nah. No way. I’ve had a crush on you since primary.”

“I’ve had a crush on you since I was three.”

“You’re such a competitive little, oh-”

You let out a gasp as Tom squeezes at your tits, that wicked grin on his face deepening as he grinds himself against you. You fall into his embrace with ease, letting him push your dress up to your hips, making quick work of your panties. “baby come on we wanna get to the pool, what’s taking you so long-” Joe barged into the bathroom without knocking making you jump out of your skin. after having your daughter Florence a year and a half ago you had been insecure about your new body.

you were curvier then before, had a few stretch marks scattered all over your body which had faded but in your eyes they were so visible. you just didn’t feel like yourself and with this being your first holiday since having her, you were nervous.

nervous that you didn’t look as good as you did before, nervous that you were gonna get papped and people online would say awful things about you, nervous people were gonna stare.

but to Joe, the sweetest man ever thought you’d never looked better. you had carried a whole human for 9 months and you looked incredible. “Joe, you scared me” you placed a hand on your chest and turned to look at him.

Joe looked at you, eyes darting across your body, seeing you in a bikini for the first time in over a year made him feel tingly. his face heated up “you look beautiful baby, jesus christ you’re gorgeous” he saw your eyes light up slightly.

Florence was in her playpen which you had brought along to keep her occupied, Joe had made sure she was safe before coming to look for you. even after five years of being together and three years of marriage, just looking at you made Joe feel giddy. he was so lucky to have you in his life.

you were the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and he couldn’t ever get over your beauty. Joe knew what you were doing in the bathroom, he had caught you one too many times and he hated that you felt insecure.

he walked toward you and pulled you into him “my pretty girl” he kissed your head as he hugged you closer. “you’ve never looked so beautiful” you smiled shyly. there was something about Joe, he always knew how to make you feel beautiful. he had a special way with words.

“come on, don’t want to keep you and flo waiting any longer” you said as you pulled yourself away from the hug. he ran back to Florence who squealed when she saw her dad, the two of them were best friends and although it made you jealous their relationship was your favourite thing ever.

seeing the two of them bonding was the most adorable thing in the entire world. even when she was in the womb he would spend hours and hours speaking to your bump with her kicking you in response. “my angel, let’s go. mama is almost ready” you heard him say as he picked Florence up out of the playpen, she squealed in delight as he did.

the three of you were lounging around the pool, Italy was boiling hot and luckily the hotel you were staying at had a kids pool and an adult pool. Florence was a baby who loved the water, she never cried when having a bath, if anything she enjoyed it.

splashing around with her toys was her favourite thing to do. she loved your pool that you had back home, every time it was hot Joe would take her into the pool. your friends kids were a bit older than Florence and she loved watching them play in the pool too.

as soon as you and Joe got situated on your sun loungers he grabbed Florence and walked straight to the kid section which was thankfully right in front of you. you watched Florence splash the pool water with her toys, the biggest smile on her face.

Joe was sat opposite her with the exact same expression on his face. it was honestly scary how much Florence looked like him. they had practically all the same features except she had your eyes, she was a carbon copy of him.

aside from the fact that Florence and Joe where best friends and looked exactly like each other the worst of it all was when Florence said her first word which was of course ‘dada’. you had prayed that she said ‘mama’ first but nope. it wasn’t like it actually hurt your feelings, your daughter had days where you were the favourite parent and it made you tear up when she finally did say ‘mama’ for the first time.

Joe and Florence had only been sat in the kid pool for thirty minutes before his back started hurting but the look on his daughters face made it all worth it. other than you, Florence was the best thing to ever happen to him. before her, he didn’t really care about being a dad. it wasn’t something he had ever thought about. but that sunny Friday afternoon, the day you told him, showed him the positive test, he never thought he could love someone as much as he loved her.

“dada” Florence said as she looked up at him and lifted up a purple octopus for him to take. “oh thank you angel” he took the toy from her small hand. Joe watched Florence with the softest smile, she was the most adorable thing ever and he couldn’t get over the fact that you guys had made something so beautiful. Florence paused playing with her toys and yawned. Joe knew exactly what that meant, she only yawned when she needed a nap, it sounded odd because everyone yawns but the little eye rub after her yawn made it obvious. she was tired.

after waking up early (6:37am to be exact but who was checking? definitely not Joe) eating breakfast and all this playing in the pool, the girl had worn herself out. “come on sweetheart, you look like you’re about to fall asleep” Joe said as he stood up, picking up her few toys and shoving them in her pockets and then bending down to pick her up. she had her small arms lifted in the air, her eyes squinting as she looked up at Joe.

he picked her up and made his way back over to you. you where laying on the sun lounger now reading a book with your airpods in. you noticed Joe walking back with Florence hugging him tightly. you took one airpod out and smiled at the two of them. “you okay?” you asked, sitting up. Joe picked up the towel that was on his sun lounger and wrapped it around both him and Florence. “yeah, she just got tired. i mean, it’s around the time she usually has a nap isn’t it?” you looked at the time in your phone and nodded. “yeah, she’s actually stayed awake a lot longer then i thought she would”

Joe sat laid down on the sun lounger, making sure Florence was comfortable before he started running his hand up and down her back and through her hair. it didn’t take long for her to fall asleep, her breathing slowed and she was completely relaxed against him so you went back to your book, letting the two of them have their moment.

it was about 10 minutes after Joe and Florence had sat down and the soft snores was the only thing you could hear from the two of them, it didn’t take long for Joe to fall asleep. he was just as tired as Florence was. you turned your attention to the two of them and felt your heart melt. your two favourite people in your company were the moments you treasured the most.

“come on Joe i know it takes ten hours to do your hair but we are gonna be late” you said jokingly as you picked up Florence who was dressed in a white dress with the cutest sandals you’d ever seen, it was the last night in Italy before you went home tomorrow night and you wanted to do something special for Joe. he had planned this whole trip for you, knowing you needed a break from your town and the paparazzi (it’s not like you hit a break from that because they followed you everywhere!).

he needed to be appreciated just as much as he appreciated you and sometimes you struggled to do that with Florence. you weren’t saying that you didn’t love being a mum because you did, however sometimes you and Joe hardly spoke to each other because you were so focused on her.

“i’m coming honey, sorry” he came out of the bathroom with his hair perfectly styled, per usual, and he was wearing a comfortable but smart outfit. black jeans, blue t-shirt, let’s just say he looked perfect. he sat on the bed and put on his trainers and started doing the laces up, he stood up and kissed you on the cheek “you look beautiful baby” you smiled and thanked him with a a passionate kiss.

“and look at my angel” he took Florence out of your arms gently “you look perfect my sweet girl” he kissed her cheek a few times which made her squeal and hide her face in his neck. “right, let’s go, we can’t be late for whatever your mama’s planned can we?” you had seen a a popular restaurant all over social media which about fifteen minute walk from the hotel you were staying at which you also remembered was Joe’s favourite. he had been to Italy a few times and had always gone there with his friends and you had told him a few months ago when planning this trip that you couldn’t get a reservation which he was actually a little upset about. you and him hadn’t ever been there together and he wanted to take you there because he knew you’d love it. it was a surprise for him that you actually did get one. it wasn’t the best surprise out there but you knew it would mean something to him.

as the two of you walked hand in hand, Joe had Florence on his shoulders laughing as her dad played around with her. after about twenty minutes (due to Joe messing about) you guys approached the small town where the restaurant was and Joe’s eyes lit up, he could see the restaurant sign and turned his head to look at you.

“are we going in there?” he squeezed your hand slightly as his body filled with excitement. “yeah, i got us a reservation and wanted to surprise you. it’s not a huge thing but i knew you would like it” his heart melted, that’s one thing he loved most about you. always remembering the little things he had said and trying your best to get those things sorted. he had said about going here ages ago and honestly he had forgotten about it but you, you didn’t and you made sure you got one.

“aww honey, that’s so sweet of you” he let go of your hand and pulled you into his side and wrapped his arm around your waist. he kissed your cheek softly as the two of you continued walking towards the busy looking restaurant.

once sat inside the restaurant you sat opposite Joe with Florence in a high chair at the end next to both of you. she was babbling away in her own little language. Joe replied to everything she said as if he knew what she was saying but it made her happy, she had a smile on her face showing her four small teeth. “last night in Italy. is it bad that i want to live here forever?” Joe said as he turned his attention back to you.

you shook your head “no, it’s beautiful here” you smiled, if you could move to Italy you would, the houses were beautiful, the people were lovely, the views were gorgeous, so what was stopping you?. “maybe we could move here. i mean, not now obviously but sometime in the future we could” Joe said as he ran a hand through his hair.

“also just changing the subject, i really appreciate you doing this for us” he started but you rolled your eyes jokingly “Joe, all i did was make a reservation it’s not that big of a deal” you laughed but he took ahold of your hand and looked at you “it is to me. you went out if your way to get us in here and that’s just a small piece of what you do for us. you take care of flo when i’m away working which fucking kills me but you keep it together, make sure she’s okay and even make sure i’m okay and i’m not even there before you make sure you’re alright yourself. when we are at home together the only time we see each other is when we are in bed and at that point one of us is usually asleep. i know you miss up our date nights and even just being together in general” he was stroking your hand gently as he spoke.

“this vacation has been the best thing for us because we’ve actually spent time together which we rarely do. we have completely different schedules so i know it’s hard but after this movie is over i’m taking a break and i’m going to focus on you and flo. you’re my main priority and i need to spend time with you.” he kissed your hand and smiled.

“we do need to spend more time together and i do miss our dates, they were my favourite” his smile softened and his grip on your hand tightened ever so slightly. “i know, so that’s what we are doing. i’ll get someone to look after Florence and we will do something together” with happy your heart melting you leaned over the table enough to kiss him. you could feel him smile into the kiss which you always loved him doing, you didn’t know why, you just did.

“i love you” you said as you pulled away to sit back down “i love you more” you felt your cheeks heat up. you heard a small whine from the little lady who was sat next to you which made you both turn to look at her. she had the smallest frown on her face which made both you a Joe laugh “and we couldn’t forget our favourite girl” he said pulling her out of her high chair and placing her on his lap, smothering her with small kisses which made her giggle, making your heart melt at the sight. your favourite people in the world.

It’s embarrassing, really. He tells himself every time to stop daydreaming about you and how beautiful you are, how your skin beautifully shines under the sun after you emerge from the water. The smile that sends him weak to his knees– Oh, there he goes again. Rambling and admiring every single part of you. 

💙 He doesn’t really approach you nor does he know how. So he admires you from afar, smiling to himself whenever he watches you interact with the ilus, or talking to the children, playing along with them and entertaining their little fantasies. One of his favorite things to see you do is collecting seashells off the shore, you're always on the look out for a perfect shell to add to what he assumes to your collection. He sometimes notices that you add a few of the shells you found on your clothing. Another thing he loves to see you do is– “Neteyam, are you staring at them again?” Lo’ak followed his older brother's line of vision and laughed loudly when he proved himself right. “You are a creep, you know that?” He slapped the back of Neteyam’s head playfully. “Ay! Lo’ak!” He grumbled, hands pressing against the back of head, soothing the warm blistering skin with his cool hands. “Why don’t you talk to them?” Lo’ak questioned, sitting right next to his brother. “I’m not telling you.” Neteyam scooted away from him, salty from the uncalled slap he got from Lo’ak. “Bro! C’mon.” Lo’ak frowned. “You will never win them over by staring at them like a weirdo!” 

💙 Neteyam catches himself doodling hearts on the sand. One minute he could be watching over Tuk, laughing at her when she ruined her little castle by accidentally kicking it. Next, he’s thinking about you and how you’re so kind to everyone that he doesn't realize what he’s drawing until Tuk calls him out for it. “What are you drawing?” She asks, skipping over to him and pointing at the unfamiliar shape on the floor. “It’s a heart?.” He says, confused. When did he ever draw that? Then it hits him. He drew that while he was thinking about you. He sighs out and rubs his forehead with his palm. “What are you doing to me?” He says to no one in particular. “Who’s doing something to you?” Tuk innocently asked, tilting her head to the side. “No one.” Neteyam was quick with his response. “Go rebuild your castle.” He shoos Tuk away.  Tuk knows who Neteyam is talking about because Lo’ak told her, but she doesn’t pry and continues to build her little castles. That’s what she was planning to do until she saw you talking to Lo’ak “Look, the pretty person is talking to Lo’ak!” Neteyam looked over to where Tuk was pointing at and gasped dramatically. “WHAT?!” Then he turns over to Tuk. “Wait, how do you know about them?!” Tuk cheekily smiles. “Lo’ak told me!” 

💙 Neteyam gets a little bit jealous when he sees people touch you longer than they should. Don’t think he doesn’t notice the lingering touches from Ao’nung or Rotxo, even Tsireya. He likes to admit that it doesn’t bother him and that it doesn’t ruin his day but anyone can notice his visibly tense shoulders and narrowed eyes from a mile away. The way his ears are tucked and tail very slowly swishing behind him speaks volumes. “What’s wrong with him?” Kiri asked one day, watching how her brother had his arms crossed his chest, moodily sighing every now and then. “Rotxo said hi to y/n.” Lo’ak plainly said. “What if he tried asking them out!” He whined. “Bro, why don’t you just ask them out yourself!” Lo’ak was so close to smacking Neteyam. 

💙 The one-sided pining drew all of Neteyam’s family insane. If Lo’ak heard Neteyam complain one more time he was going to stomp all the way to you and blurt out that Neteyam has a big crush on you. Jake and Neytiri (As much as they love the fact that their son is in love) had enough of Neteyam’s constant daydreaming, he never listens to what they’re saying and when they instruct him to do something he doesn’t even know what to do because he wasn’t paying attention. Kiri and Tuk find it amusing, they’ve never seen their brother so helplessly in love before and they can’t help but tease him every time. “Lover boy over here isn’t paying attention.” Kiri pointed a thumb at Neteyam, who was in his head till now. “What? What happened?” He looks around the room, confused. “He’s probably imagining how many babies they’re going to have!” Tuk giggled. “Tuk!” Kiri tried to sound like she was scolding Tuk but it was drowned out by her own laughter. The two sisters laughed together while Neteyam covered his face in embarrassment. 

💙 Neteyam’s yearning gaze doesn't go unnoticed by Tsireya. She knows whenever he’s looking at you and she rolls her eyes every time. “How much longer is this boy going to stare at you with those lovesick eyes before he walks up to you?” She says under her breath, shaking her head disapprovingly. “It’s hopeless, Tsireya.” Ao’nung says from beside her. “Are you talking about Neteyam?” You pipe up from behind Tsireya. “Even you notice it.” Tsireya sighs out. “It’s obvious.” 

💙 One day, Lo’ak had enough of his brother and devised a plan. With a lot of convincing, he pulled Neteyam over to you. “Meet my idiotic brother, Neteyam.” Lo’ak introduced you to him. “I know who he is, Lo’ak.” An amused smile stretched out on your lips. “I’ve heard a lot about you.” Neteyam almost fainted right then and there. “You have?” He squeeked out, his tail tucked in between his legs. “Yeah, Lo’ak tells me a lot about you.” You tell him, grabbing his hand in the process. “He also told me how you have, in his words, a big fat annoying crush on me.” Neteyam looked over to see Lo’ak, only to find he was long gone. In the distance he could hear Lo’ak yell, “Good look, brother!” Neteyam blinked owlishly, an awkward chuckle leaving his lips. “He has?” You nod your head. “You are also very obvious. Your eyes told me everything.” Neteyam wanted to die right there.

You and Tara didn’t meet each other in the best way possible, you met on bad terms, especially since she crashed into you while running and spilt hot coffee on you, screaming an apology as she ran to who knows what class, not even looking back.

For that whole day your white shirt was now a caramel brown, making you a little frustrated.

Tara was walking to her film history class, her hair in a braided half up half down, basically huffing as she opened the door, as she looked for a seat, the only left was a seat one away from the window. 

A pretty girl with her headphones in sat next to her, scribbling on her notes and wow, her writing was so neat. It reminded her of the poems that lovers would write to each other in neat curvy lines back in the olden days. 

Then she looked down at her sweater, it looked like a coffee stain.

Wait, a coffee stain?

The pretty girl was you, the one she crashed into and accidentally spilt steaming coffee on your sweater while she was running late to her next class, not even being able to make the face as she turned a corner and was gone.

Your gaze shifted from your words to the girl standing in front of you, your warm eyes looking at her, then recognizing Tara as yours narrowed.

“You owe me a new shirt. That was eighty dollars.” You mumble, pointing to the stain on your shirt, your voice soft, but trying to be a little annoyed, sour, and angry, Tara found it adorable.

“I was late to class.” She shrugged, making a small laugh as she sat down.

“That doesn’t mean you can spill your steaming coffee on me, I think I got a rash.” You basically flipped her off without actually flipping her off.

She groaned, “Okay I’m sorry, that must’ve hurt. My name is Tara.”

“Y/N,” you said simply, your voice wispy, sounds like a sweet and pretty sound, Tara could listen to it for hours-

“I’m still mad at you,” You murmur, turning your head away from her as your hair draped over your notes, writing.

She scoffed, a little angry that you weren’t quite talking to her, more like talking to her about the situation that she forgot about.

“Are you always like this?” She said, smiling, a little sarcastically.

“You’re mean Tara,” You turn to her, head laying against your palm. “Can I not be a little upset that you stained my favorite sweater, and basically burned me with your flaming coffee, what a memorable way to know you right? You were already late, why not just take your time?”

Tara huffs, seeing you like a kitten that doesn’t get what they want, saving your sweetness for her and squeezing out a little bitterness. She nudges you on the shoulder, making you shift a little and let out a small quiet giggle.

“Whatever Tickles.”

“Don’t call me that Tiny.”

“Excuse you?”

“Don’t think that teasing won’t jump back at you Tiny Toe Tara!”

“Oh fuck you!” She says sarcastically, “You drive me insane!”

Tara was right, you do drive her insane, but not the way you thought of.

Who would’ve known that her mind was you every night before she went to bed, the way she could feel her cheeks heating when thinking of your face. Your hair. Oh god, please don’t get started with your smile. It drove her crazy, in that way where she has seen your face as you talked to someone, just realizing how much of a listener you are. A good one especially, she sees your eyes as you nod, the way you tilt your head in a conversation, fully immersed.

Tara always wanted to have someone listen to her. She was always listening to others, good listening or not, she never got it back.

There were days where she’d tell Sam the things you did, basically screaming as she says how annoying you are. But at the same time, Sam sees the way Tara’s eyes dilate when she talks about you, gushing all her words at once and scrambling some words.

“She sounds like someone you talk about a lot.” 

“Excuse you? She is hot! I mean not!”

“Have you ever seen what she looks like? I think I stare at her too much.”

“Why?”

“Oh pfft, because she’s an atrocious looking pretty looking ogre that I can’t help but feel sorry for how she looks.”

“Pretty looking?”

“Oh yeah. No! You’re getting it all wrong. Pretty looking ogre like her looks pretty like one of an ogre.”

“That’s not what it sounded like.”

You and Tara throw insults at each other, she hates them.

“My Tiny!”

“Tararific!”

You annoyed her to bits, she was annoyed at the fact that she was desperate to see you, to talk to you, to see you smile. She was angry that she just couldn’t hate you. Even with your silly personality, teasing remarks, and playful nudges, there were moments where she saw you being you. Seeing you feed stray cats on the sidewalk when she walked to her apartment, your headphones in as she sees your pretty figure asleep on your desk as you took soft breaths, or the way your eyes are different than any other, different in the way that it was special.

She was so lovesick, but she would go through that phase every time if it meant seeing you for a second.

Why try getting her feelings for you to rip?

Knowing that you could still make her heart skip?..

So my favorite character in The Brothers Sun is Taiwan. Like yeah Taiwan has its own shows and movies but it just feels Different to see Taiwan in a big international/American show! It’s SO cool actually and so um here are some thoughts I had and things I Noticed about different Taiwan scenes and things in the show idk

Episode 1

the opening shot of Taipei tells us this is a Thursday- the top of 101 is green and is a different color every day of the week

that corkscrew-shaped apartment building we see Charles living in is kind of an urban legend here in Taipei. They say it’s the most expensive place to live in the city, that each apartment has its own swimming pool, and that there’s an elevator specifically to bring cars up to display in your living room. No idea if the interiors look like that for real though

I was gonna say it’s pretty crazy he has an American-style oven in Taipei bc nobody does but actually in that apartment… yeah he probably would

afaik there’s not a way to (“legally”/officially) stream any of those famous British baking shows here rip

I do wonder if they actually filmed the opening scene in the corkscrew building or if they just really pay attention to detail because the skyline seen out the window matches up to what it would really look like from that part of the city

the shoes, I mean we all know about shoes-off houses but yeah

豆漿. Soy milk. Yeah

They definitely eat Hi-chews in one of these scenes

Episode 2

It makes way more sense for the guys to have snuck out for shaved ice as kids than youtiao… I’m just saying… like would *I* do that yes but it’s usually just like. A thing you eat with soup or breakfast

Episode 3

“Are you sure you can handle-“ “the heat? I’m from Taiwan.” lmfao BITCH Taiwan has some of the blandest cuisine I’ve ever tasted (he does think it’s too spicy tho lol)

“Keelung. A fishing village just north of Taipei.” Okay like I can see how the older generation would call it that but it’s actually a whole ass city…

Episode 5

Not a Taiwan thing but the Maotai made me laugh. It’s like the Coca Cola of Chinese baijiu and imho it’s just as awful as every other brand

Episode 6

ok the episode that made me want to make this list

the Costco shit IS funny because vitamins, baby formula, that’s all the good stuff you want to bring back from abroad BUT actually we have Costco in Taiwan and can easily get a lot of that stuff? This concept imo would fit a lot better for China than Taiwan. It’s still very much a thing to load your suitcase up with baby formula on the way home to China, and there’s actually a huge smuggling business bringing it in through Hong Kong but I digress

Idk why I’m happy to hear Changhua and Douliu mentioned in an American TV show… Seriously, I don’t know. They’re kind of like nowhere places I’ve never even been. I just feel like everyone’s grandparents live there.

Even the way they film Mama Sun on the plane. Like the Mandarin music in the background with the announcement for Taoyuan airport… to me it feels specifically like a transpacific flight to Taiwan lolol but that’s definitely like a bias probably

Okay not to be SO nitpicky but so when she looks out the window on the plane to see Taipei 101 etc I’m not sure about that? The airport is actually in another city and I feel like I usually come in around and over the ocean or something?

But WOW the taxi scene my favorite scene it’s SO visceral and SO Taiwan… the street, the lights, the Cosmed/Mos Burger/7-Eleven, the street noises, like I can FEEL Taiwan through the screen and HER FACE taking it all in I WANT TO SOB

The temple, beautiful like this episode makes me believe Michelle Yeoh is Taiwanese lol

I appreciate the viscerality of the night market shots too but it seemed a bit empty

Okay so Mama Sun’s mom is super rich too based on where she lives which I guess it makes sense. But what I am curious about is the story about why they’re speaking Cantonese because Taiwan has a lot of languages but that’s not one of them like officially at all. I wonder if there’s a character backstory there or they just like. Didn’t want to bother teaching Michelle how to speak Minnan or something

The cemetery too is so fancy, I mean it fits but wow that’s expensive real estate

In the hospital scene, Taipei 101 is lit blue out the window, making it a Friday. Has everything in the show so far happened in only 8 days?

Episode 7

“Last night the Boxers made their move” 101 says it’s Tuesday for anyone keeping track

I LOST it at the Foodpanda driver assassin the first time I saw this… So Taiwan

Big fancy church in Taipei? I know they exist but I’ve never seen one in person (like 2%? of the country is Christian)

A mom bringing back tea as a souvenir from Taiwan? 100% real

Episode 8

RAW is a real restaurant in Taipei. It’s very fancy and very expensive and had I think two Michelin stars. I don’t know ANYONE who’s actually been there lol

Both the mother and child come to HQ specifically so that the mother can truly express her gratitude to Seph while she’s not adrenaline filled.

The child is just amazed to see what the inside of HQ looks like.

Yess more Sephiroth and little kids wholesomeness!! Part two of Sephiroth helping a lost child:

• A week later, the mother and child show up to the 49th floor looking for Sephiroth, with cookies as a thank you gesture. They wouldn't have been able to get far if it weren't for Lazard conveniently running into them in the lobby.

• Lazard can barely contain his smile as the little kid goes on and on about how nice Sephiroth is in person, and the mother expresses how if it weren't for him, Gaia knows what would've happened to her child.

• He leads them to Sephiroth's office, not caring wether or not he's currently drowning in work because he knows the SOLDIER's day is about to be made. (Those vanilla sugar cookies smell delicious).

• Meanwhile Sephiroth is dragging his last remaining brain cell through poorly written incident reports. He'd give anything for a distraction, or at least a reason to do anything but this.

• His prayer is automatically answered when a knock on the door signals Lazard's arrival with the mother and child. The kid doesn't wait before excitedly running into the room to say hi to Sephiroth.

• Momentarily paralyzed by all the new faces in his office, Sephiroth barely registers that he's being hugged by the eager child. The mother is already expressing her gratitude while Lazard smugly stands in the corner, enjoying watching Sephiroth's brain short-circuit in real time.

• When Sephiroth regains his composure—and gives the kid a quick smile and pat on the head— he gets up to properly talk to the grateful mother. He says making sure her child was kept safe while he located her was the right thing to do, and he didn't think twice before helping them.

• He bites his tongue when the topic of abandoning your child scratches his mind, and quickly brushes it off in favor of maintaining a polite demeanor.

• Lazard suggests he take the mother on a tour of the HQ while Sephiroth does the same with the kid, who's eagerly tugging at Sephiroth's hand and begging for a tour.

• Sephiroth agrees—somehow not reluctantly—and watches Lazard leave the office with the woman. The little kid grabs the tin of cookies off the desk, rips the lid off and insists Sephiroth try one. They gush about how their mom made them just for Sephiroth and hopes he likes them.

• Sephiroth does like them. Sugar cookies are his favorite.

• And then he has an idea. Grabbing the tin of cookies off the desk, he turns to them: “Why don't we share these with some friends of mine? Is that alright?”

• The child is bushy-tailed and excited to meet more SOLDIERs—he calls them "heroes"

• Sephiroth gently takes the child by the hand and heads for Angeal's office, where he knows Genesis will be at this point in the afternoon, using his best friend's work space as a retreat to avoid work and read.

• Sephiroth answers each of the child's questions, extending them endless patience and understanding even when the questions ring along the lines of "does mako make your pee green?"

• Surely enough Genesis is in Angeal's office, strewn across the couch, reading. Angeal is typing away on his computer, but stops and looks up when Sephiroth enters with their visitor.

• He explains to them that this is the child he helped just a week prior. Genesis, now sitting up, is surprised to learn that the mythical lost child does, in fact, exist and wasn't a figment of Sephiroth's imagination.

• Sephiroth is tempted to respond, but opts against raising his middle finger in the presence of a child.

• Meanwhile Angeal is already up and out of his seat, bent down in front of the child, shaking their hand, asking their name and other friendly questions only Angeal would know to use to befriend a little kid.

• They hang out in Angeal's office for an hour. Angeal prints out coloring pages and pulls out a pack of crayons—that Genesis refuses to admit are his.

• They spend their time drawing, answering the child's infinite questions, and having makeshift sword duels with rulers—the child was especially happy when they won over not one, but three First Class SOLDIERs.

• “Alright, alright! I surrender!" Angeal cries, laying on the ground and feigning weakness as the child wins their duel.

• Sephiroth laughs more than he has in the past two weeks, and is surprised when Genesis "I hate children" Rhapsodos comes back from his office with a pile of kid's books to read to the child.

• But soon enough the child's stomach growls, and Sephiroth suggests they take them to eat something in the mess hall.

• They decide to have a piggyback race there—the little kid on Sephiroth's back and Genesis on Angeal's.

• Passerbys are dumbfounded by the sight of Sephiroth laughing and running with a giggling child on his back.

• They end up winning, so Genesis decides that this means the little kid deserves the fattest chocolate cupcake the mess hall has as a reward.

• The four of them sit at their usual table, and are joined by Zack and a group of other Seconds who had been sested at the next table. Everyone is curious to learn about how Sephiroth helped the child.

• Zack teaches the kid how to chew up the paper straw wrappers and shoot them through the holes (at Angeal, because the disgusted sound he makes is funny)

• Genesis cuts up an apple to go with the kid's cupcake, and humble brags about how he was the one who invented the Banora White juice that they're drinking.

• Angeal keeps wiping the child's mouth and making sure they're not chewing too fast, making sure they're well fed and happy.

• The other Seconds are telling the child all about their latest mission and how they defeated two Zoloms, absolutely playing it up to impress the child.

• Meanwhile the child is sitting beside Sephiroth, often squeezing his hand and including his name in the conversions even when they're not about him. He loves to talk about how Sephiroth was the one who saved him, how Sephiroth is the coolest, how Sephiroth is the best.

• Normally these types of vapid comments make him uncomfortable, but just this once, coming from this kid, they mean when world to him.

• Soon Lazard calls Sephiroth asking him to bring the child back to his office where he's waiting with the mother.

• The little kid bids everyone goodbye, high fives each one of them. Zack makes them promise to come back and visit so they can play all the latest video games in the SOLDIER lounge.

Angeal has written a thank you note to the mother for the cookies. He slips it into the child's pocket along with his own cookie recipe.

Genesis let's the child take the book he had previously read to them home, and encourages them to read more.

• Sephiroth and the child leave. Their walk to Lazard's office is quiet. Sephiroth suspects that they're tired after an afternoon of fun.

• But then the child asks him one last question.

“What's your mom like?”

“.....She...died—when I was born.”

“Oh.” A very long pause. “I'm sorry.”

“That's alright.”

“So what's your family like then?”

Sephiroth hesitates uncomfortably. “I don't have a family.”

The child looks confused. “But I thought Angeal and Genesis were your family.”

Sephiroth has to laugh. “No. We're very close, but they're only my friends.”

The child asks, earnestly: “What's the difference?”

This time Sephiroth doesn't have an answer.

i would say i’m sorry if i knew that it would change your mind

verbal communication was not johnny lawrence’s strong suit. he tended to be a more action oriented human being. especially when he started bullying daniel larusso, soon after he first arrived in receda. all it took was one black eye to develop around daniels eye, for you to break things off with johnny.

it had only been 2 weeks since he had moved to receda but more fights had arose between you and johnny than you had ever had in your 9 and a half months of dating.

“i’m not dating a bully.” you told him forcefully, your y/c iris’ full of disappointment and animosity, were now trying to dig away at the guilt and hurt in his own.

but i know that this time i’ve said too much been too unkind.

“well it’s not my fucking fault that larusso always gets what he fucking wants! i have nothing left, so if your going to leave me for him that’s fucking fine with me i wouldn’t expect any less! just another brick in the fucking wall.” he spat, now making full eye-contact with you.

johnny immediately knew that he had fucked up but it was too late, your eyes once full of disappointment were now doused in confusion as you didn’t even know who you were talking to at this point. as you bit the inside of your cheek, you turned around and walked the other way not wanting to say another word to johnny as you ventured home.

the moon didn’t shine that night. nor did the stars. the plethora of clouds had made it hardly visible to view the only thing you could count on one hundred percent of the time.

i try to laugh about it , cover it all up with lies.i tried to laugh about it hiding the tears in my eyes.

the next day at school you didn’t look, nor speak to johnny lawrence. he gazed at you from across the halls and lunchroom but it didn’t fix anything.

johnny glared at the brunette, trying not to let tears form in his eyes.

i would break at your feet and beg for forgiveness, plead with you but i know that it’s too late and there’s nothing i can do.

johnny had came up with a plan to get you back and apologize. he had bought you your favorite flower and was going to surprise you. he even wrote out a thorough thought out apology in hopes that you would forgive him and he could get you back.

soon enough, every fiber in johnny was inflamed with resentment and anger. daniel larusso had his arm wrapped around your shoulder. he was kissing your cheek. and he was complimenting you.

so i tried to laugh about it, cover it all up with lies, i tried to laugh about it cover the tears in my eyes.

that night bobby had called johnny to see how it went.

“so johnny did you get the girl back?” he asked him. johnny chuckled.

“nah man it’s funny cause she wasn’t home. her mom said she was out with her friends so..yeah.” he lied straight through his teeth. the moments of you and daniel playing in your head again. tears soon began to spill uncontrollably.

“woah johnny man, are you crying? hey it’s okay man.” bobby tried to console once again over the phone. soon enough sid, johnny stepfather came up the stairs.

“boy would you quit that racket?! and stop crying like a little girl, cause boys dont cry! you hear me? boys don’t cry!”

i would tell you that i loved you if i knew that it would make you stay but i know that it’s no use and that you’ve already gone away.

johnny knew it from the day he met you, he loved you. he was just waiting for the right time to say it. however he never got to. daniel had taken you from him faster than a blink of an eye. it was too late. he wasn’t getting you back and he knew it. what was the point?

misjudged your limit, pushed you too far, took you for granted, thought that you needed me more.

johnny didn’t know when enough was enough. so when you broke up with him, he was distraught. he never really understood what he was missing till you were gone and far far from his reach and in daniels now. johnny truth be told couldn’t live without you, and unfortunately he had to find that out the hard way.

now i would do most anything to get you back by my side

johnny tried, and tried to get you to talk to him, and hear him out. but there was no use. you were happier with daniel. and he knew that and understood he had to come to terms with it as well. even if it was going to be hard. he valued your happiness over everything and if that happiness came from someone that wasn’t it, then so be it.

but i just keep on laughing, hiding the tears in my eyes

on the surface johnny seemed okay. he seemed as if he had moved on. sensei kreese had taught him to channel all his grief and anger into karate and cobra kai but within every laugh was hidden tears. because we all know. boys don’t cry.

“You know I’ve never loved anybody like I love you?” A smile grows on the woman’s face as she lays on the bed with her husband, throwing her leg across his hip. “And everyday I find a different type of love for you” Hearing him go on, she looks up from his golden pendant that hung from his neck, her eyes attempting to avoid all eye contact. “Don’t do this right now” she groans, her hands covering her face to hide her wide smile.

They had just ended their night after a busy day together, enjoying the anniversary of their wedding. Even after seven years of marriage, and fifteen years of knowing each other, he still made her stomach fill with butterflies.

He made her feel giddy, and shy when just neutral the minute before, and he’d always point it out just to make matters worse, especially if they were in public. She always thought she lucked out when it came to him, and she was right. He was everything she could have asked for in a husband. Even when he got upset, he was gentle and always tried to be aware of her feelings, taking in everything she had to say before speaking his mind, and still giving her the space and respect she wanted. He just adored her in every way. His goal was to make sure she was always comfortable.

His favorite thing about the relationship was that it wasn’t one sided. She cared for him like he cared for her. She was everything he could ever want and if you asked him yourself, he’d tell you exactly that, followed by numerous compliments about her and how she was too good for him.

Calming down from their fit, she sighs. “On a serious note, I’m grateful for a love like yours. Even though you have a thing for trying to make me blush all the damn time” she playfully rolls her eyes.

Chuckling, he put a hand up in defense.“never knew it was a crime to sweeten my girl up every now and then, my bad”

He cracks a grin against her finger, then moves it from his lips. “You…are so obsessed with me!” he brags in a joking manner, loud laughter escaping his wives mouth. She playfully hits his chest and leans up off of their pillows. “Boy, please! This coming from the man that would try to buy the moon for me if I asked for it”

“The moon? Baby, I’d buy the whole damn solar system”

thank you and sorry for taking so long to reply! i kept meaning to write a review of the dawn of yangchen but then the sequel came out, which i just read, and i figured i'd just combine the little i had written with my overall impression of both novels. it might just be recency bias, but i really enjoyed the legacy of yangchen, it hit all the right spots for me. my review isn't formal in any way, but here are my scattered thoughts in the form of bullet points (in no particular order), and if there are any details you'd like me to expand on or analyze more formally, please don't hesitate to ask! i'd love to discuss these novels further.

obviously, spoilers for both the yangchen novels under the cut.

i like how i can tell that fc yee is a sokkagirl the same way i can tell that will arbery (one of my favorite playwrights, worked on s4 of succession) is a romangirl. and that’s all i’m gonna say on that! 

in my draft of my review of the previous novel, which i had only outlined but never actually finished, i said this: “zongdu chaisee seven months pregnant and effortlessly running an entire city from the top down in a way that makes her completely untouchable despite her obviously criminal tactics vs zongdu henshe gripping the public bathroom sink sobbing into the basin and flailing around throwing tantrums whenever the avatar questions his competence. a girlboss running her empire vs a pathetic little boytoy imploding under the weight of his own ineptitude. i love them both.” which i stand by even more now that chaisee is given more prominence in the sequel. she was already my favorite character in the yangchenverse, but now she’s EXTREMELY my favorite character. and rip henshe lmfao you were fun but we won’t miss you.

that said, kalyaan swiftly moved up the ranks. his scenes in this novel were so excellent. the way he humiliates kavik as simply as breathing, but also the way he completely fell apart when he thought kavik was hurt. their relationship is so fascinating, im obsessed with their toxic undying brotherhood!!!! and im the number one hater of guys with smug auras usually, but he’s so beautifully written in this novel i just couldn’t help but relish every scene he’s in. 

i also wrote last novel: “mama ayunerak was also a very cool character. at first she seems like just a sweet little old lady but it turns out she’s actually extremely shrewd and has eyes everywhere!! best spy in the whole damn spy novel, perhaps??” and my opinion has only somewhat changed. i still love her, don’t get me wrong, but i don’t think i was giving yangchen herself enough credit. she can evade the white lotus masterfully when she wants to.

i also, of course, LOVED seeing the white lotus in their banal, daily operations. how the sausage gets made, if you will. as a white lotus lover, and a kavik lover, and a lying liars who lie lover, this was all extremely satisfying for me. the fact that they were the ones to orchestrate the platinum affair is so beautiful to me. fc yee understands me. he gets it. 

yangchen and kavik have such a beautiful relationship. i love that by the end, yangchen still doesn’t even realize that kavik isn’t remorseful because he betrayed the Avatar, but because he betrayed her. he doesn’t even really give a shit that she’s the avatar in like, the grand, spiritual sense. he just loves her for who she is. a smart, funny air nomad who wants to make the world a better place. and she has it so bad for him lmfao i don’t think she even realizes it tho 😭

i loved the references to gurus laghima and shoten, the koans yangchen quotes to herself throughout the novels, the portrayal of air nomad culture in general. it’s great to be able to spend time with air nomads in a real way, even if most of the action still takes place in the earth kingdom. 

jetsun is such an incredible minor character, that final scene tells us so much with so little. and i love the stark contrast she provides to kalyaan, which yangchen even says. the difference between older sisters (queens & legends) and older brothers (toxic male manipulators) i suppose. 

a minor detail i enjoy is the confirmation that airbenders can use airwaves to detect the movement of objects. it’s only fair that each element gets its own version of seismic sense, and if firebenders have heatbending and airbenders have wavebending, i think waterbenders could theoretically do the same via the moisture in the air. just a fun piece of lore i like to think about. 

i love that despite how intelligent and studious she is, yangchen is, fundamentally, a jock. she thinks in koans and sports references. she prides herself on being airball team captain. she is competitive and fun loving, just like any other air nomad. 

also yangchen being called “a terror” (by jetsun) and “a horrible little girl” (by yingsu) is so real and adorable she’s literally a little sister & a menace!!!! <3

combustion bending lore getting expanded upon was great for me. i love that chaisee’s history as an exploited pearl diver gave her both the idea and the will to use people as weapons. it’s not that she thinks it’s okay to do, but she thinks it’s fine because it’s how the world works. though she’ll use the cruelest methods, she’s not innately cruel, she’s just been jaded enough to become amoral, and thinks doing whatever it takes to secure her position is always justified. excellent character i fucking love her truly. 

we never actually find out what happened to jujinta or the history behind the yuyan archers, but that’s okay. the toll it has on him is what’s important, and that’s communicated effectively enough without exposition. 

i thought that surely yangchen would find a way to end the platinum affair, but i actually loved that there was no getting through to feishan, and ultimately, he had the power. i think her strategy of becoming the zongdu for the entire earth kingdom and personally distributing funds is fascinating, because it’s exactly the kind of un-air-nomad behavior that separates her from aang. yangchen is wise and spiritual, but she is also shrewd and pragmatic. her air nomad status strengthens her integrity where it matters, but it doesn’t hinder her ability to make the necessary calls that burden the avatar. as much as she doubts herself and resents her responsibilities, she handles her role beautifully. 

her bison dying to save her is just. sheer pain. first jetsun and now nujian, not to mention her banishment from the northern air temple, avatarhood demanding sacrifice is the one constant across all their lifetimes. except roku. roku’s just a spoiled brat. 

something i love about kavik is that he is an excellent liar. i think that if he continues his career in espionage instead of becoming a healer, he could really flourish. also the fact that he’s really good at mental math is very funny to me. when you long to be a doctor but your skills are in accounting and spycraft… 

the chaisee yangchen foilage is so rich & juicy i love how chaisee genuinely loves air nomad philosophy despite her own modus operandi being so antithetical to air nomad values. how it’s clear that despite commiserating with the burden of the avatar, she so desperately wishes she had that power and built-in clout and eternally preserved legacy. how she calls yangchen her “little sister” in a parallel with kalyaan & kavik, but jetsun is her actual big sister so the thought of chaisee calling her that disgusts her. i actually think that if chaisee had joined the white lotus instead of becoming a zongdu she could have enjoyed all the benefits of power and protection without actually putting herself at risk. but she is also far vainer than she would like to admit. alas. 

i would have really loved to see the dynamic between chaisee and kalyaan. i know they would be such a fascinating couple, these inverted foils of yangchen and kavik, who are so smart, and shrewd, and talented, and fragile. i could read an entire novel just about their domestic disputes. 

i love the way the novel dealt with questions of avatarhood—its unfair burden, its unfair power, the ghosts of past lives possessing you, the way it can be so isolating even when you have community and personal support and the adoration of the masses, the arrogance that unique power can lead to. it’s a very difficult question if you actually try to consider the in-universe political implications of it. i hardly find it surprising that an anarchist (such as comrade xai bau) would come to the conclusion that avatars should not exist. 

fc yee does such a great job of incorporating lore from atla & lok, both small details and major plotpoints, in a way that feels natural and seamless. despite the fact that the tone of this novel is very different, it still feels like it takes place in the exact same universe. and for what it’s worth, i prefer the tone here. not that i don’t love the grand sweeping quest narrative of atla, but the daily minutia of exploitation, the manipulations and machinations of power players on a more balanced world stage is far more intriguing to me as an adult. the same way that as an adventure-loving child i was obsessed with katara, but i grew into loving sokka as i matured. i will always enjoy atla’s righteous battle between good and evil, but the nuanced, grounded politics of the yangchen novels really hit the spot for me now. i said in the past that the kyoshi novels do what lok tried to do, but this novel is actually the most perfectly illustrative of that idea for me. maybe because it explores the exact kind of archetypes and themes im already predisposed to enjoy in this franchise. maybe it’s just recency bias. but i loved this book.
