“YOU WILL BE FOUND” NATIONAL COLLEGE ESSAY WRITING CHALLENGE 2021 | DEAR EVAN HANSEN
In partnership with Gotham Writers Workshop and the Broadway Education Alliance, DEAR EVAN HANSEN invited 11th-grade and 12th-grade students across the country to write a college-application style essay that describes how they channeled “You Will Be Found” to ensure those around them were a little less alone over the last year, or, alternatively, a moment where they found comfort in connection.
READ FINALIST PAIGE’S FULL ESSAY:
We nicknamed the half-mile dirt lane leading from the asphalt back ways to our grandma’s house-in-the-woods the “Bumpy Road.” I wonder sometimes how young I was the first time my mother jostled me over its potholes. I imagine she never fathomed that the Bumpy Road would be my route home from the day I staggered my first steps to the summer after I turned eighteen. My mother died before I turned two years old; my grandmother took in my brother and I shortly after.
I can remember Bumpy-Road-drives with my grandma. I can remember her setting me on her lap and letting me steer or flooring it over the ridges to reach the bus stop on time. She would let me get out and run home ahead of the car on beautiful days and even stayed patient when I would stop every few feet to pick a wildflower or a weed. She made me love that road.
Last spring, as the reality of COVID-19 was settling in, I was in my room retracing the curve of a precalculus cosine graph, finishing up notes my teacher had prerecorded for the class, when I tuned into the end of the phone conversation I could hear my grandma having on speaker in the living room.
“I talked to Tim, so he’ll see what he can do.”
“What can he do?” my grandma asked.
“I don’t know, Mom. I don’t know.”  I could hear my aunt sigh over the phone. She often called to rant to my grandma about work. “Well, I won’t keep you here too long-”
   “Oh, you're not keeping me!”
“I know, but I’ve gotta get off here and text Darian.”
“Oh, alright honey. It was nice talking to you. Be careful and let me know if you need anything.”
   “I will, Mom. Love you.”
   “Love you too. Bye.”
   “Ba-bye.”
I heard her set the phone down followed by the click from my aunt hanging up. I closed my Chromebook and put my notes away, thinking about schoolwork, friends, and everything I was missing. I stood and peeked out my doorway into the living room at my grandma, but at that moment, she seemed different. That was the first time I noticed the way she sat sunken in her seat or smiled sadly out the window. About a year before then, my grandma had heart surgery, followed by an infection that, even before the pandemic, made it difficult for her to get out the way she used to do. I thought of all the things that she must miss.
“Would you want to go for a ride?” I found myself in front of her, asking the question. “Just to the end of the Bumpy Road to get the mail?”
“Sure.” She smiled wide, and I felt myself doing the same. We put on our shoes and ambled out to the car before I backed us out and began our short journey.
I drove slowly, bowing the brake pedal to every pothole. We did not say much during the short drive, although my grandma made a comment about seeing the stems of daffodils sprouting up along the road. She had planted those bulbs under random trees with my brother when he was a toddler. At the end of the lane, I strolled across the street to the mailbox. It was slightly chilly, but the sun somehow smelled of citrus and hope.
We drove back home less than five minutes later, and I told her I loved her before we retired back inside. I will never be able to give my grandmother everything she has given me. I will never be able to return all her intangible gifts or truly express my gratitude for the difference she has made in my life; however, I like to think that day, with one small act, I got a half-mile closer.

Weekend Escape to the Fall Colors of Sherando, Blue Ridge Parkway
Sherando Lake | Augusta County, Va. There’s something extremely rewarding about roaming the back roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains during the color season of autumn so two weeks ago I picked up friend Barb one day when the temperature was in the low 70s and ladybugs were swarming and leaves seemed to shimmer in the sunshine. Here are photos of our trek through our corner of Virginia where there…
