Not a day goes by that I don't think about how the Boiling Isles' complete lack of LGBTphobia effects how witches perceive sexuality and gender. Like it's not the only factor but I feel like the fear of societal judgement and internalized prejudice is a huge obstacle in discovering your own orientation.
So with that whole part avoided, I'm imagining that in the process in the Demon Realm is??? Much smoother sailing??? Like you might be a little confused at first but there's no shame tied to that confusion. Nobody is pressured into deciding on a label for themselves because labels don't exist. Thinking you're into boys for a while until realizing you're a lesbian is nbd here. Neither is thinking you're a lesbian and then realzing you're bi. Nobody judges you. Nobody cares. I just think it may provide you with a lot of clarity that you simply couldn't get in the Human Realm.
I've always headcanoned that while straight is considered the "default" in the Human Realm, most witches just assume they're bi/pan until they discover otherwise. (And not in a "bi-normativity" way, which is, wow, a terrible word I just made up there. But more in a "idk what gender I'm into yet. Or any at all. So I'll just say everybody for the moment" way.)
But I feel like, even if there's confusion, a good percentage of witches actually somehow figure themselves out relatively early. Like they'll be little kindergarten girls in Amity's library group who have not experienced romantic attraction yet but they already know that if they're ever gonna get married, it's gonna be another girl, cause nobody ever told them they couldn't. Some figure it out as preteens. Some are teens. It's probably one of the chillest aspects of maturing for them.
It's why I'm so interested in Hunter's little bi patch on his jacket and I love thinking about how he brought himself to this conclusion. Just thinking about a sheltered brainwashed kid like Hunter who feels deeply ashamed over so much about himself but his opinion in regards to sexuality has always being like "yeah boy, girl, neither, whatever, I don't care, I'm too busy hitting bad guys with my stick."
So when Luz finally explains to him and the other kids what sexualities even are, with the names and flags and everything, he just says "Bi" then and there, completely unfazed. This is bonkers to me. I think it's the best headcanon ever. He really does not care. Nobody ever told him that he should. But that being said, he sure does love having a little pride flag. Imagine living your whole life loving scrambled eggs. It's just another mundane part of you. But then suddenly you're transported to a world where you're celebrated for loving scrambled eggs. You've got your own little "I <3 scrambled eggs" badge of honor. You don't understand it. But it makes you feel very special and important. I imagine that's how Hunter feels with his little bi pride patch on his sweater.

@respectthepetty I was going to send you an ask but once I realised I was going to be maxing out the number of screenshots allowed I figured I should keep this to my own post.
Because...I want to scream *bites knuckles* talk calmly to you about the colours in City of Stars, which I started watching last weekend...because I know you wrote briefly about them after ep 1 a few weeks ago. Back then you weren't sure if there was colour-coding but that it looked like there was a light/dark dynamic going on with Krom and Fuengnakhon and that you'd "be here each week figuring it out"...
And after 4 episodes, I'm presuming you're still quietly keeping an eye on the show...because I KNOW you would shout about it once you felt sure what was going on...but Pet! I can't wait! Because I can see what you were seeing, it does look like there's a light/dark theme
It really does!
And at the end of ep 3 Fuengnakhon's bestie and manager, Kodit and Sand, wear both light and dark as Kodit reveals Fuengnakhon's feelings for Krom, whilst both Fuengnakhon and Krom are wearing a blend of both -> grey.
BUT, before getting there, during ep 2 it seemed like there was a lot of green and purple going on 👀
A LOT
And I was going to come running to you after I had watched ep 2 but I thought I should watch ep 3 first just in case it was more of an episode theme...BUT ep 3 ALSO had a lot of green and purple
A LOT
So I went back to the beginning and properly looked and I'm left wondering if Fuengnakhon is purple (lilac-aubergine hues)
And if Krom is green (mint-jade-olive hues)
(The phones Pet! The phones don't lie, we know that!)
So maybe the light/dark is representational of the strength of their feelings...because Fuengnakhon knew of, and liked, Krom even before they met, which means Fuengnakhon wearing dark green at the end of ep 1 makes sense
And Krom quickly developed feelings soon after their meeting
until he loudly confessed (to his bestie, Two) under the purple umbrellas, and after which his blue top also looked purple
And the green and purple are also shared by the people in their lives. Krom's mum and employee have his green whilst Fuengnakhon's managers have his purple. And Krom's dad had both their colours the night they first met (similar to how Fuengnakhon has both their colours on their second day together)
But going back to the end of ep 3, and with the light/dark/grey, I started to doubt myself...BUT the trailer for ep 4 (which I forewent watching in favour of writing this) is showing the green and purple continuing! Krom in purple again!
And also when he asks when he became Fuengnakhon's...
(how about when you WORE FUENGNAKHON'S COLOUR?!)
And Fuengnakhon's grey shirt looks like it's minty green in the light of Krom's room, the minty green that Krom will also wear...
So, please, Pet, tell me what you've been seeing! Because I really hope you've been seeing the same thing!
(As a slight aside, I've also noticed pink and blue...but I think that's the fandom support of Fuengnakhon...but it could also be connected to the hues of Fuengnakhon and Krom's colours...)
Anyway... Pet, I'll be waiting when you're ready to offer your thoughts! 💛

fic writer self-recs
I was tagged by the lovely and talented @titleleaf!
Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favourite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers.
I'm gonna try not to just reproduce the same list from the last time I did this (although I can't fucking find it, so who knows), and also shine the spotlight on some that I think don't get as much attention but that I'm still very proud of anyway!
(But also, the road goes ever on. It's always gonna be the road goes ever on.)
1. house rule #3 (MCU Thor, Avengers [2012])
“Darcy,” Jane says, firmly. “Breathe.”
“I am totally breathing,” Darcy protests. “Look, after you offered me the job, she bought us a bottle of sparkling wine and thanked me really cryptically and I basically haven’t seen her since. And in that time, Selvig’s dropped off the map, and a supervillain calling himself Loki who could be her fraternal twin pops up and starts chewing German scenery in a helmet that looks exactly like the one in this book.” Darcy sits back in her chair, bouncing off the back. “Also, I told her about this professor who was a total pain in my ass, and like two weeks later he was on leave for ‘undisclosed reasons’ and he still hasn’t come back.”
“This…could all be a coincidence,” Jane says, lamely.
“Oh yeah. Same way that weird homeless guy you kept hitting with your car showing up inside that storm was all a coincidence,” Darcy says. “Oh, my god. I’ve been watching ANTM highlights with a supervillain.”
I love Darcy Lewis, I think the narrative voice in this one hits her sense of humour just right, and it makes me astoundingly nostalgic for the early 2010s.
2. definitely not bfu rpf (definitely not Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher Unsolved?)
“Even Scully took it seriously when the shadow government gave her cancer, man,” Bryan says, when he sees the glitchy footage.
“There – okay, there are two issues with that line of logic,” Zane says. “First, cancer. That’s detectable by current medical science. It’s not exactly a matter of belief. Second, Dana Scully is a fictional character.”
“So you won’t get an exorcism?” Bryan says, sounding defeated.
“Bryan, my dear, I think you already know the answer to that one.”
Back when the Watcher guys were still attached to Buzzfeed, there was a really popular fandom trope that went around that Shane was secretly a demon. However, nobody seemed to have taken the next logical step - that if Shane was a demon, he wouldn't believe it.
(I don't write RPF, because I tried it and felt weird about it, but I just had to get this written, so I changed everybody's names to something that rhymed with the real-life people's names. Legally Distinct Buzzfeed Unresolved.)
3. Girls In White Dresses (Supernatural)
Mary’s the first to appear in the kitchen doorway, pistol raised, eyes flinty. But she pauses, just for a moment, when she sees Dean, and Jess’ stomach drops. Whoever - whatever - Dean really is, he at least hadn’t lied when he’d said he was Sam’s brother. He’s Mary’s son. And Mary’d just had to watch, helpless, while one of her sons died.
Mary’s going to hesitate. But Jess can already tell that Dean won’t.
By the way Dean's grinning, she can tell he knows it too.
I had to unfridge some of SPN's many, many freezer-burned women. Also it was so much fun to try to think up ways to hurt all of them emotionally as badly as the show likes to hurt its big strong men emotionally. (Lady Gaga voice) It's equality.
4. i hold with those who favour fire (Crimson Peak)
Perhaps she looks too long. Perhaps her eyes are playing tricks on her, perhaps it is only the lingering warmth of the body melting away the fallen snow, but it seems there are more autumn leaves gathered under Edith’s frozen form, more reds and golds spilling from beneath her nightdress and her hands and her golden head. The leaves flicker and dance, as though caught in a high October wind, though any such wind would be stymied by Allerdale’s protective walls.
It isn’t until the hem of Edith’s gown begins to blacken that Lucille sees that what she had taken for autumn leaves are flames.
This one was written for a prompt meme where I asked for a character and a monster/mythical being, and wrote something short connecting the two. I should do that again, that was fun.
5. Boiling a Frog (Rick and Morty)
“It’s strange,” she says, tipping the contents of her cup carefully into the drain under the vending machine’s dispenser and crumpling the cardboard cup in one hand. “None of this feels really...real. Like, Grandpa Rick should be here complaining about how hospitals are breeding grounds for superbugs and how sitting in waiting rooms is pointless because unless you’re a doctor, there’s fuckall you can do to help anyway.”
Morty suddenly looks uneasy, but Summer’s not sure if that’s because of what she said or because of the coffee.
“I’m glad he’s not,” he says, and then looks horrified.
I broke up with this show when it became clear it was going to wallow and spin its own wheels and suck Rick's dick forever and that at least one of its creative minds genuinely seemed to think that was great and smart and good storytelling and if you didn't love it then you were just too stupid to appreciate his brilliance. But every once in a while the show managed to do something really interesting by approaching something heavy and awful sidelong with absurdist sci-fi and gross-out humour in a way that just worked for me.
I tried to do that here and found out just how hard it is to get a handle on that tone of almost manic energy with total black despair oozing out around all the edges. I think it really turned out, here, and despite no longer having any interest in anything to do with the show, I'm proud of it.
Also, I still love Summer.
I'm going to tag @daddygrandpaandthebeaver, @bixxelated, @marzipanandminutiae, @definitely-not-a-bug, @aquitainequeen, and, as usual, anybody who'd like to do it!
