...that Sascha and Ludger were hinting that Cedric was a deserting Shinigami, which is why "it runs in the family". Because of ch105 and discussing deserters like you said, but also, how would they even know by looking at that family tree ?

Sure maybe, Cedric's birth and death years are hidden to us readers in that panel because he was several decades or centuries older and it's written on the tree but, since Shinigamis technically aren't allowed to interfere with life and death, I don't think noticing weird birth and death years would have immediately led Sascha & Ludger to the conclusion that "Cedric K. Ros- is a deserting Shinigami".

No, I rather think that Sascha and Ludger put two and two together that the Phantomhive family is burdened by the Watchdog duty because they have this weird lineage "running in the family".

Because, as I explained before, I don't think, even if Cedric is UT, that he's the explanation behind the lineage thing. Because I'm sure Claudia also had weird abilities, which is why she received the Watchdog title despite being a woman, like our!Ciel and like Frances.

So I rather read this scene in ch103 as Sascha realizing that "Earl Phantomhive, they who undertake the dirty work of the British royal family... oh, because they have this ability that runs in the family and allows them to detect supernatural beings !".

Keep in mind, I could be wrong, but I don't think ch103 is meant to draw attention to the whole Cedric = UT thing, that has more to do with ch105. Ch103 is purely about the Phantomhive lineage, so it has more to do with our!Ciel's direct predecessors.

I'm not even really watching nor reading it anymore (too tired from coursework + have better things to do in general), but. Still can't stop thinking about how shinigami function in Kuroshitsuji. Who's their boss? Does the Shinigami Dispatch Society corporation have... Like, executives? The corporation probably isn't some sort of eldritch self-sustaining self-governing entity, right? Unless it is, which would be kind of funny. The reapers are supposed to be those who've committed suicide atoning for that, right? Who in the world said they have to atone? More importantly, who decides when they're done? God? Is God their boss then? Is that God also all generic white collar worker-looking? Argh. Are the reapers at least unionised? Any evidence in the manga for that? I feel like there is if you look for it.

That's not even the start of it. Hopefully, we'll get some kind of reaper spin-off when the main manga's done, this is torturous. I want my worldbuildings! Or at least some sort of (functionally) conclusive "there is no worldbuilding, so just make up whatever you want", like in Touhou 1-5 or something. But no, Toboso's clearly introducing lore and whatnot, lore that is relevant to the plot, so... (But I may be misinterpreting the intention here, naturally)

“Ugh, What a disastrous night. To think I had to skip my beauty sleep for overtime…” The red-haired Reaper pouted. “That’s what you get for messing around with that Sebas-chan, Sutcliffe senpai,” the second Grim Reaper said, leaning on his lawnmower. “Thanks to you, we also missed our escort back to headquarters. We’ll have to traverse there on foot now…” The first Grim Reaper clicked her tongue. “If only Will were here, he’d carry me to headquarters in his cold, stiff arms…” She started swooning away, prompting the second to grab her arm and drag her along. “You’re such a spoilsport, Ronald,” Sutcliffe complained after being awoken from the daydream. “Yeah well, I want to get back without running into any more trouble,” Ronald said while slinging his Death Scythe over his shoulder. “You’re lucky to have me as your beautiful tour guide back to the dispatch society!” Sutcliffe struck a pose as Ronald walked right past her. “Hey now, you wait for me you hear!” Sutcliffe was throwing a tantrum. After catching up with Ronald, she continued. “You know, a lot of men fell for my charm. How come it doesn’t work on you?” “Probably because my own charm repels that of others,” Ronald joked as they walked the path between the dimensions. “Do you remember walking this path for the first time?” Sutcliffe asked. “Ah, yeah it sure brings back memories. I for sure thought I had died… We should take this route back more often…” After a moment of silence, Sutcliffe came with a follow up question. “Do you remember why you did it?” “Are there any of us that tend to forget?” “I don’t suppose so… But we’re often too busy to think about it, don’t you think so?” Sutcliffe twirled her red locks as they walked. “Well, that’s all part of the punishment I guess… There is not much to do about it now, so cheer up will you, Sutcliffe senpai? You’re right, we’ll have to think of something else to keep us entertained.” “I don’t know if I should take the ‘decent’ part as a compliment or not, but… Oh forget it. GO back to thinking about your precious Sebas-chan,” Ronald sighed. Sutcliffe immediately became giddy again at the mere mention of the demon’s name. After walking a little while longer, they arrived at a tall building that was seemingly stuck in time. “We’re back,” Ronald said, as the double doors slid open. There was another group of people dressed in black suits in the spacious, spotless looking foyer. At the head of the group was… “Will!” Sutcliffe leapt and tried to take the male in a death hug, but he lashed out with what appeared to be a weapon, and struck Sutcliffe back to the ground. The rest of the group looked alarmed. “Don’t worry, it’s just one of our anomalies,” The man named Will said in a monotonous voice. From his place on the ground, bleeding from the head, Sutcliffe moaned. “How come you weren’t there to pick me up today, Will?” “You mean how come I wasn’t there to scold you for your insolence? Both you and Knox are very tardy,” Will scoffed while adjusting his glasses. “You better go and file your reports. I’m supposed to take this group on the introductory tour and I could do without the disruptions.” Ronald blinked. “These are all new recruits? So many…" Then, he turned to the group. “Don’t worry, you’re peachy and safe now. We’ll help you along, and soon you’ll walk the path of a first-rate Shinigami, like us!”

I think so, or at least not in Retrieval (probably something about needing “strength”… as if women like Mey Rin don’t exist). I’m hoping that there are more women in Forensics at least. Unfortunately, the story is set in the late 1800s, so I think the sexism in the human realm extends to the Dispatch :/. Since they constantly misgender Grelle, I don’t think they treat the cis women any better. It kinda makes me sad to think about tbh!

My concoction for UT's backstory, completely subject to change when / if it is revealed in the manga.

In life, The U.ndertaker, known then as "Cedric", was a man who dedicated his entire life to the study of alchemy. He was obsessed with it, though it was only natural as his life was nurtured in the hands of an alchemist who had taken him in after being left to rot as an infant, wounded and ill-stricken with infection by the pecking beaks of black birds and insects. It was in partial due to part of alchemy that his life was saved by his mentor, pulled from the brink of death and brought to health to flourish in his adoptive mother's knowledge and inheritance - specifically her chase of the Philosopher's Stone. He learned everything that she had to pass down and continued her research after her eventual passing, and in his late thirties, he quietly discovered it and obtained longevity & perfect health.

With its discovery, it was a graduation. He lived a hermit lifestyle in his mentor's tower, far too captivated by studies to really find motivation fo leave it, but discovering the stone, he finally went out into the world to discover what was out there, and what was to enjoy for many years to come. He would sweep across Europe at a cool pace, mingling with society, folding in with multiples of personalities and those of different ranks in social standing. He would bless those who he grew particularly close to with miraculous good health with the properties of the stone, and he would tend to the ill with cloth wrapped his face stuffed with lavender and star anise, watching them as they would recover from the brink of death and reflect upon it. Captivated by the process of recovery and just how stubborn the human spirit can be, and how it only needs a stepping stone to grip life by the throat and climb into recovery. Cedric was very, very captivated with aiding the ill, and would become something of a traveling doctor who left patients in blooming health in his wake.

He lived long until sentimentality crushed his heart, and he realized that with all his research, he had settled for complacency with the stone and still could not cure death. His heartstrings wrapped around his neck and ended a life lived for 396 years. In his chest he hoped for a reunion, but would instead open his new eyes into a world of Death - The European Shinigami Dispatch in particular. Minus the lingering moments of strangulation and heat from oxygen deprivation, the feeling of his eyes bulging, his long, winding achievement of a life from before was a fog. There were phantom emotions and vague familiarities, though nothing clear. His heart was heavy and barren, anchoring him down until work was eventually thrust upon him. He was a God of Death now, and he was given the duty to judge and end the lives of others indefinitely. He would do so dutifully, burying himself into his work like an energized, entranced ghost, and he would do quite well, earning himself the name of the "Silver Fox". He judged the souls of Robin Hood and Marie Antoinette himself in time, and was surprisingly effective of coaxing the souls of children into the afterlife when they were too weak to carry on.

Through the years, however, one of those phantom feelings grew like a supple seed into anger, and eventually into rage. This would birth the efforts of his desires to abandon the Dispatch, leaving a wake of destruction in his path as he did so not once, but twice. The first time he would attempt it he would not succeed, but twenty years later he would succeed. He suffered immense injuries as a result, marring into deep-colored scars across his face and his neck, and riddled all about his body, yet he was free. He disappeared into Europe, discarding his special eye glasses that fixed his accursed vision and hide his telling phosphorus green eyes from the world. He entered the life of a Funeral Director sometime later, opening up his own parlor in the hidden cobbled streets of London.

During his time in Dispatch, he became fascinated with a family lineage known as the Phanto.mhives, loyal Watchdogs to the English Monarchy for generations, drenched in dark history and highly integrated with the underbelly of society. After establishing himself as an undertaker, fate would twine him with the family after he uptook the role as an Informant for the Underworld for his own amusement. He integrated himself as an ally and would eventually join the "Aristocrats of Evil" in due time, working closely with the family and forming connections. They became quite precious to him, starting with the upstart that was Cla.udia Phanto.mhive. It was her death that impacted him so heavily for the first time in a very, very long time.

(manga verse) It hit a very specific pain that was long buried, and it sparked an old trait of manic to life. At this point he was in the midst of his own experiments of human life, ceaselessly curious by it and how to push it past its normal boundaries - how to continue it once its life has already been clipped, and bring it to life again. Her death sent him straight into experimentation of reanimation.

His work would not come fast enough. He would lose her son, Vincent, along the way, burned to ashes and irreparable for salvaging. It was with death of C.iel Phanto.mhive, the son of Vincent, that his work truly begun. Unknowingly, he's accomplishing the one thing he never could figure out while he was alive, and he is driven to see it through to sharpened perfection.

C.iel Phanto.mhive was resurrected as what the Under.taker refers to as a "Bizarre Doll", and he only ever truly became himself once the Under.taker returned what was once lost to him - his soul, fresh from the belly of a starving demon.

He's still learning and has an accent when pronouncing. - He's subconscious about it, so don't tease him!! --- Lastly, He's taught himself how to sign language so he can easily communicate with his subordinates who may have lost either their hearing or their ability to speak from the Quincy war. - Aside from those three, there's no reason for him to learn any other ones. - He doesn't do travels around the world.

It's noted that Jin knows a great deal about the Soul Society, the Seireitei, and the Gotei 13's history, along with their inner workings, but its never really stated how Jin knows any of this. Jin's said to have studied these things over centuries, but it's a peculiar thing to think about since it's not like Jin or any of the other Bount have been able to access the Soul Society or the Seireitei directly at any point (not until way later in the Timeline) and its not like there's books laying around in the World of the Living that detail the history and workings of the Soul Society/Seireitei/Gotei 13-- how on earth then does he know so damn much?

That's where Maki Ichinose comes in, the former 11th Division Shinigami who departed to the World of the Living and whom Jin ended up recruiting into his band of Anti-Soul Society misfits. Maki would have been able to relay a great deal of general knowledge about the Soul Society, Seireitei, and Gotei 13 to Jin early on, and you can bet he probably probed Maki for every bit of information he could scrape, but even then, the sheer depth of what Jin's aware of in the present day goes farther than what some former seated Gotei 13 officer would know.

Where then did the rest of Jin's knowledge about the Soul Society/Seireitei/Gotei 13 come from? Again, Maki is the answer-- after initially extracting every juicy detail from Maki about the Soul Society's inner workings and history along with that of the Seireitei and Gotei 13 that he could, he dispatched Maki back to the Soul Society and Seireitei every so often to spy. This was possible for a few reasons-- firstly, while the Bount couldn't cross through it themselves without the help of a Quincy, they had a spell that could summon a type of Senkaimon, and Maki, being a Shinigami, would have no issues using this to move to and from the Soul Society whenever they wanted. Staying undetected while inside the Soul Society and Seireitei wouldn't be hard for Maki either, since their Zanpakuto would allow them to become invisible, ergo, he could spy on the Soul Society and relay newly learned information to Jin easily.

Even with that happening, though, there's still only so much that could be gleamed from spying in this manner, and it certainly wouldn't be possible to learn some of the Soul Society's or Seireitei's history this way, especially those bits that groups like Central 46 wouldn't want people knowing. That's why at some point, Jin had Maki infiltrate the Daireishokairō (the Great Spirit Library), the repository of all the knowledge and history of Soul Society, and it was through this that Jin learned many, many things, like specific details of the experiments that led to the Bount's creation but other interesting things, too...

Background:

Awakening in the Rukongai after what felt like a dream, a young Kyoko did not have a name until she was invited to work for room and board by a family generous enough to give her their surname, as well as the name Kyoko. Years later, she witnessed a shinigami striking down a hollow in town, and she immediately knew that if she wanted respect, and a place to be, that's what she had to do.

She made her way to the Academy, spending quite a few years there and learning what she could. Her zanpakuto is shy, though she managed to befriend her during the quiet nights in the barracks of the academy. Upon her graduation, she immediately joined the fourth division, seeking to be kind in this world that she had seen so much difficulty in already.

After being deployed multiple times, however, her comrades were getting hurt on a regular basis, Kyoko being forced to stay back to protect herself, as she was the dedicated medic. Even as her concerned grew, her admiration for Captain Unohana only continued to grow. In fact, she grew her hair out and tied it in a similar way.

Despite that, however, she determined that she could no longer watch her comrades face enemies on their own while she remained in the back line, and due to her proficiency with brewing up poisons, she was transferred to the second division. Her introduction to the division was brutal, but she found herself suited to the work.

She continued to excel, joining the execution corps, working her way up the ranks, and eventually becoming a seated officer- the sixth seat, in fact. By the time that her captain clashed with Yoruichi Shihoin, she was quite confident in her hand-to-hand combat abilities... until the Goddess of Flash lived up to her name. In an instant, Kyoko and all of her comrades were dispatched, Kyoko herself sustaining a broken arm and several broken ribs. However, through the pain, a new admiration bloomed.

After she'd recovered, she immediately threw herself into training her hakuda and shunpo techniques, admittedly neglecting her zanpakuto training, despite having worked together to unlock her shikai. She also made sure to avoid any promotion, as achieving a seat higher than the one she was at would require that she head a squad, and especially after the incident with Yoruichi, who she had been researching in the meantime.

Things really were shaken up at the end of the Thousand Year Blood War. During the initial attack, she caught a quincy arrow to the side of her head, thankfully just barely missing any vital spots, but leaving her with a nasty scar that she began to grow her hair out to hide. During this time, she also focused on further refining her connection with her zanpakuto, eventually achieving her bankai, as she expected the quincy to not expect such a display from any who were not of captain rank. With these tools, she managed to survive the quincy attacks on soul society, though only barely.

In the aftermath, she was promoted despite herself- she's now the warden of the Maggot's Nest, and though she greatly misses being able to go out on normal deployments, she doesn't mind the work. It even plays into her strengths- her empathy and proficiency for hakuda made her a natural choice for the position.

She no longer throws herself into her work with reckless abandon, but she continues to perform whatever tasks she's assigned with little to no issue, and makes sure to get outside during her breaks. After all, just because she's cooped up now doesn't mean she's not going to relax on rooftops and in trees anymore.

History

Soul Society Arc

Even though all seated officers were given the clearance to keep their Zanpakuto on themselves at all times, Aizen orders Miki to remain on stand by when the ryoka first invade the Seireitei. Yamamoto had forbidden the captains to send out any other lower-ranked shinigami after Ichigo Kurosaki had defeated Renji Abarai. Thus she stays put within the barracks for the time being. Miki encounters the scene of Aizen's death and the following altercation between Momo Hinamori and Izuru Kira shortly after the other lieutenants took them away. Miki immediately pursues them to where Momo is being held. At the time, Momo refuses to tell Miki anything about what happened or what Aizen was doing the night before he was murdered. Miki returns to the 5th division to await any further instruction.

Miki had a brief verbal altercation with Toshiro Hitsugaya. He took over most of the 5th Division's paperwork claiming Miki did not have the clearance to do most of it as a 3rd seat. Miki argued against this, citing that it was more roundabout to take it out of circulation from the Division to a captain who isn't familiar with the Division's duties, members, or current operations. Ultimately, Miki was forced to temporarily give up much of the Division's paperwork because of her position. As much as she dislikes completing paperwork, it left her more out of the loop.

Miki receives the message from Isane Kotetsu about the truth of Aizen and his actions while still in the 5th division's barracks. Miki does not confront Aizen at the Sokyou hill, feeling there is nothing she can do to stop him over the other captains and lieutenants. Thus, she witnesses his escape to Hueco Mundo from the bottom of the hill with some of the 4th and 11th division members. One week after Aizen's departure Momo is still in critical condition and the 5th's operations fall to her hands.

Hueco Mundo Arc

Momo is barely recovered when things in the Soul Society have returned with a semblance of normalcy. Miki continues to do her best in running the 5th, with Momo being able to stay awake and alert more and more each day. Miki quietly considers if she should request an audience with Yamamoto so she can take the captain's exam, but decides against it, feeling it may be too soon and too much of a shock to Momo and the rest of the wounded hearts in division 5.

A month after Aizen's departure Momo is up and about, but still very frail, thus Miki still handles majority of the duties of the division with her approval. They learn of their comrades' battles with the arrancar and Miki commiserates with Momo on her ability to not be there for her peers.

The Thousand-Year Blood War arc

With the first invasion of the quincy on June 13th, with something that is not quite luck, Miki does not fall target to any Sternritter. Not yet appointed captain, she appears the same as any other foot soldier, thus is not perceived as any high threat. She engages in combat with several sets of soldat, claiming victory among them, but not leaving unscathed. Yamamato is defeated in battle. The remaining captains mourn. Shunsui is appointed the new captain commander of the gotei 13. On June 14th, exactly one day after the invasion, Miki requests the captain's examination. With Shunsui Kyoraku, Shinji Hirako, and Juushiro Ukitake serving as witnesses, Miki passes and is appointed the new captain of the 8th Division. Miki spends the remaining three days before the second invasion of the Wandenreich to train and rally what is left of the 8th.

When the Wandenreich launches their second attack, Miki is dispatched to protect the Rukongai from incoming attacks of Ywach’s army. Seeing as she was only just promoted to Captain, it did not seem wise for her to run for the most the hard-hit parts of Seireitei when she's unproven on the battlefield as a commanding officer. Sending a Captain-class combatant to the Rukongai to protect the souls and readily deal with a large amount of soldat seemed like the best course of action. She returns to the Seireitei and assists the remaining shinigami and Urahara with opening the doors to the royal realm, but remains behind.  When the shards of Lille start raining down on the Seireitei, wreaking havoc among the remaining shinigami, Miki assists Izuru with the disposal of them. 

Post TYBW

Post-war brings a lot of changes for the 8th Division. As the Sereitei is rebuilt after the war, Miki added some major changes to the 8th’s barracks to suit her needs as what she visualized the 8th Division becoming. Near the front of the barracks and the main building, what was once a concrete courtyard is now a large garden and several greenhouses. A wide-open concrete space still exists to the back of the main building as a potential gathering or training space. Dirt and grass training space also exists, along with offices, leisure space, indoor training rooms, dining areas, and quarters for the officers. There is a pond somewhere on the grounds, as an officer once put an octopus in it.

The 8th gains a lot more female shinigami as the years' pass. Although Shunsui always asked for pretty ladies to join the 8th, it likely didn't sway many of them to join. Now that the division is run by a woman, who honestly has several interests that are more on the stereotypically feminine side, but also a warm and welcoming presence, it has drawn more women to join. There are still many men, but over time with the shifting specialty of the 8th, it draws a certain type of personality. The 8th gains the reputation of being a kind place, but one that also values resiliency and determination. 8th Division members may look gentle but are strong-willed and will fight tooth and nail for their convictions. A "be kind but take no nonsense" sort of philosophy.

The 8th becomes the "greenhouse" division with its botanical provisions. It is self-sustaining, growing produce to feed its officers. It also grows and provides medicinal herbs and remedies to the 4th Division. Miki also grows and concocts various plant based poisons to provide to the 2nd Division. The 8th also plays a support role for the rest of the Gotei's Divisions. They deploy relief/support teams for other divisions on missions when the going gets tough, or changes need to be made. A sort of "we're here for you, and we're here to back things up" system. Other divisions are likely provided with signals to alert these teams. The 8th also runs their independent missions, patrolling their own assigned sectors of the Rukongai and Living World. The 8th Division also operates a produce stand in the Sereitei to sell some of their produce on weekends.
