TIL that the English word “Lord” in the sense of the head of an estate comes from an Old English word of Germanic origins, hlāfweard, later hlāford, later lord. 

Normally I wouldn’t remark on my romps through etymology, but “hlafweard” is a compound of hlaf, or loaf, and weard, which means guardian (see also Ward or Warden, etc). Meaning that when you call someone a lord you are calling him an esteemed keeper of the bread. 

HEY THERE BREADBOX PETER WIMSEY. LOAF GUARD PALPATINE. BREAD CLIP VETINARI. 

Lady also derives from hlaf, but in this case hlafdige or bread kneader. She makes the bread, he monitors it. Women have to do all the work as usual. 

Now, the reason I was looking this up was that I wanted to develop a gender-neutral analogue to lord/lady; there are analogues already out there naturally, but the Shivadh must be different and anyway I didn’t like the ones I’d seen suggested online. 

Given that the origins of Lord and Lady aren’t all that strongly gendered anyway (they’re about what the person does, not what their gender is), I decided that if a woman is a bread-kneader and a man is a bread-guarder, a nonbinary person should be A BREAD EATER, which would be Hlafetan.  

Thus I present to you the gender-neutral analogue to Lord or Lady: Ledan.

Ink tumbl tober Day 6: Blorbo

Y’all. I spent the last 2+ hours working on this. The power of the graphite compelled me and I was not up for ink on this scale. Description below drawing will have spoilers

This is the royal family of Askazer-Shivadlakia and their chosen family: King Emeritus Michaelis; his partner Jes; Jes’s son Noah; TV and internet influencer chef Eddie Rambler, fiancé to King Gregory; King Gregory III; Gregory’s cousin [edit: Alanna] and administrator for the king; Duke Gerald (Jerry), royal vizier and cousin to the king from the other side of the family.

This is for @spinningprincess who emphatically campaigned that for blorbo I do the Shivadhverse characters- the whole set- and I decided a family portrait was the way to go. If I were to do over, I’d have made the scale for them much bigger so I could have given their faces more detail. @copperbadge was beyond generous and wrote a novella length description on how he imagines everyone. Posting an hour shy of tomorrow - and I don’t care.

I'm home in Texas with the folks who immediately put on a Hallmark movie. It's about a food scientist trying to woo an Italian chef to her company, and the opening scene where she meets her dad before calling the chef is like...it's so close to the scene in Fete where Michaelis and Gregory have dinner that I'm laughing. Down to the "you should be dating" "Yeah dad so should you," conversation. I really did nail the Hallmark aesthetic with that one.

It's just slightly salty mushroom water. I was prepared to be horrified, but it's not bad really. (I really like both mushrooms and salt so I'd probably be the idiot that always knows THE ONE BAR that stocks Davzda.) I have IDEAS. For the mocktails obviously and for a fermented second batch. I kinda feel like Eddie as I sit here and reverse engineer a fictional drink. I'm also preemptively really enjoying the looks on my siblings faces when they open my fridge at some point and find several bottles marked "davzda - test four". Except at least one sibling or nibling will just blink and ask, "is that what I think it is?" And then we'll pour shots for everyone and spend the rest of the day talking shit about Gregory and Jerry. And probably finish a jigsaw puzzle.
