THE CURIOUS CASE OF SLOW FASHION MOVEMENT

Another day, another update. And in this week, we will be focusing on the interesting connection of social media influencers and the slow fashion movement.

Before that, let’s have a recap! Digital citizenship is the skills and knowledge to effectively use digital technologies in a positive way to participate in society, communicate with others, and create and consume digital content (Office of the eSafety Commissioner, NSW Department of Education).

How does this connect to the topic we're discussing today? Fashion has evolved throughout time and across platforms, and it is now heavily influenced and shaped by social media. The necessity to always have a new trend, a new style to keep the internet platform interesting has affected the development of several occupations, one of which is fashion, which has bloomed into a new genre called rapid fashion.

Fast fashion refers to a business approach in which fashion collections are brought to market as rapidly as feasible. The collections are inspired by current trends, as well as what celebrities and designers are wearing. These fashionable products had to be available in the shortest possible time. produced in low quality and at a very low price, therefore, cutting corners in not only the artistry department of a product but also its quality. But with its existence, the ‘traditional’ fashion is in very much harm with the competitive pricing, creating a movement called “Slow fashion”

Slow fashion, unlike its opponent, promotes a sustainable and mindful approach to fashion production and consumption. It is synonymous with concepts like 'eco fashion’, ‘sustainable fashion', 'ethical consumption', 'thrifting', and 'circular fashion’. Garments are typically produced from environmentally friendly materials or even recycled textiles. Clothing is generally more durable and of higher quality. The production procedure is also eco-friendly (Pookulangara & Shephard 2013).

On paper, it seems like the latter option is superior and sustainable, however, the younger generation of buyers seem to be more attracted to fast fashion and stray away from investing in high quality clothes. This is because of the many online social media and shopping platforms that they are engaging in are constantly pushing these products. Apps like Shopee or Shein are notorious for selling clothes for a low price, knowing the potential unethical business behind it because the profit cut for both the manufactures and buy count are very high (George 2020). And with many KOLs, KOCs unknowingly (or even knowingly) booked to review these items, costumers are tricked into the falsehood of hoarding shopping to not miss out on the next big thing.

There are still people who realise this and during COVID-19, we have seen a rise in more sustainable way of being fashionable. People who are overwhelmed by the constant advertising of these platforms have time to research the products they buy into small business or ones who support good causes for the environment and fashion workers and their clothes to be worthwhile (J.P.Morgan 2020). We see a rise of thrifting, renting habits and many DIYs trend boomed and for many people, maintained as a routine until now.

At the same time, the tricky mix-up in fashion began when corporate fashion empires recognized the patterns and jumped into the movement, greenwashing their products in order to pull one over on customers, such as H&M, Zara, UNIQLO, and Asos, which is also harmful and malicious for vulnerable buyers.

The slow fashion movement was founded to promote sustainability in everyday wear, but will it withstand the test of time to determine whether the movement itself can be sustainable? Participants should be on high alert due to the constant act of wolf in sheep's clothing by fast fashion businesses looking to take their money, as well as knowledgeable about how to be inventive with things they already have.

Instead of walking aimlessly thru the city, I went to Decathlon to get my racket restrung with strings I bought there as well. My first set of spin strings since lessons couple years back. Been thinking about developing good technique and skills with my own training methods, thereby making myself a living maybe one day.

Also bought a can of balls. They're quite a bit cheaper at Decathlon, trainer pressurized balls. Feel just right to my arm. Saw a few pretty women on the walk there and back. Fashions have never been sexier and girls, concerned about their body shape and hairdos.

So I will be picking up the Dunlop Apex Pro either tomorrow or Thursday which mustn't conflict with my Shopee parcel. I may start off later in the day, after 3pm.

What is something you’re behind the times on? TV shows (idk anything that's on Netflix or any of the streaming apps anymore) and younger celebrities (idk who anyone is anymore).

What are you brainstorming ideas for right now?  Miraculously enough, nothing. Work has been unforgiving the last few weeks and weekends but it's slightly slowed down for now, so I'm allowing myself to just...not...think...for today.

Do you have a neighbor who plays real annoying music?  No. Some of them will have music playing very loudly occasionally –usually if they hold a party – but I've never found it annoying as most of the time it's songs I like too. We also have a neighbor who every now and then will be heard taking saxophone lessons and it feels like they're serenading the whole neighborhood haha. It's great.

Do you miss someone?  No.

What’s something you’ve had a toxic reaction to?  Nothing like this has happened. There was food poisoning in the past but I don't think that counts?

Have you ever had a severe allergic reaction?  I haven't. I've gotten rashes from grasses and certain fabrics but they all went away within half an hour or so.

What do you want to be for Halloween this year?  Idk I don't really care for Halloween costumes anymore. If anything, I'll get a soldier costume and DIY my shoulders to look 3x wider and say I'm Jin.

Have you ever had a friend push you away for no reason?  Sure, that happened with me and Cheenie when my soon-to-be-best-friend-at-the-time and I were becoming closer by the day. I guess she thought we were starting to become bad influences due to our vulgar humor, so she broke free from our little circle and just stopped approaching us ever again.

What are your summer fashion essentials?  Just a bunch of airy pants and sleeveless tops so that I don't end up cranky.

Do you have a 5-year plan?  I don't like making plans that long-term because I tend to not take failure very well. Instead, I like going with the flow but with a purpose, if that makes sense? Like I'm fine just going wherefuckingever as long as I get to achieve something every now and then – which has been happening so far anyway with the promotions I've been getting every year.

What do you sell, if anything?  I don't regularly sell things, but I recently sold a few of my BTS photocards to make some extra cash on the side.

What’s your favorite thing about Sundays?  Other than it's a weekend, nothing. All I do on Sundays is dread that the next day is a Monday, anyway. I usually can't even rest on Sundays without feeling some slight sense of dread.

What would you have been named if you had been born the opposite gender?  No clue. My parents never thought of it as they learned that I was a girl only when my mom already gave birth to me. In other words 1) they wanted to be a surprise and 2) they didn't have the chance to think of names had I turned out to be a boy.

If you had another sibling, what would he/she be named?  No idea, but I do know that for a boy they leaned towards Spanish names.

Do you like your name?  I love it now. I used to hate introducing myself as a kid because I got bullied for Robyn 100% of the time, but as the years passed it grew on me more and more. People got nicer too – the "Oh, a boy's name?" eventually transformed to, "I love your name!" and that really helped with my self-esteem.

What does your name mean?  Bright fame.

What would you name your daughter/daughters? I've listed my favorite girl names more than a dozen times on here and I don't want to have to do it again hahaha.

Do you want to have kids?  Not anymore. They make so much fucking noise.

What was your favorite vacation you went on as a kid?  We didn't have much money in my younger years, so as a kid I just really treasured the weekends my parents would take us to the local water park :) They would do everything to make us happy with what they earned and it continues to mean a lot to me to this day.

Were you happy as a kid? No. Life at home was very turbulent and not at all ordinary. I had to mature pretty early on and I think that's what also made me struggle to make friends.

Which Barbie had your hair color?  Idk. I didn't like Barbies and never played with them.

Do you have any toys still from when you were a kid?  No.

What were some of your favorite toys as a child? My cash register, all my cooking toys, my Blue's Clues telephone, Beyblades, and idk if they count as toys but also my Pokemon pogs and cards.
