The Plaza in Suburbia
Right down the street from me, there are two grocery stores on opposite sides of a major intersection through town. This intersection has four lanes of traffic on both roads, plus left-turn lanes. The grocery stores are major box brands, complete with large parking lots that are only ever halfway filled. One stands on its own, the other is part of a small strip mall that has a basic salon, pizza place, Subway, and a bunch of random other things. At the end, a small gas station sits right before the turn into a residential neighborhood.
There is so much traffic at that intersection. All the time. It's loud, too, even late at night, from the constant white noise and the occasional siren or engine roar. For all this noise, though, there's not a whole lot to do at these shopping centers. Just get groceries. Maybe sometimes get a pizza.
I'm incredibly lucky to have two grocery stores so close that I can walk there. However, to get to either store, I have to cross one street or the other. With that much traffic, what should be an easy five-minute walk to get groceries becomes a frustrating chore. In an area purposed for cars, it's almost easier to drive the block to the store rather than risk getting hit to walk there.
Between the two stores, their parking lots, and the intersection, there is about 20 acres of land there. All of it paved. All of it for cars.
When I first did this calculation, I thought I had to be wrong. I'm bad at math. Really bad. So when I plugged the formulas and came up with that number, I was sure I had messed up somewhere. So I asked someone who was good at math. They came up with the same answer.
20 acres. That is an incredible amount of space. All of it less than half a mile from my door. All of it paved and purposed for cars.
About fifteen buildings can sit inside an acre on average. An entire small ecosystem could be constructed in this space, easily accessible on foot or by bike for the thousands of people who live in the developments around it. Every time I brave the walk to pick up beer or eggs and I'm waiting at the crosswalk for the light to change, I look out over the traffic, and envision what an amazing village center there could instead.
Underneath where the traffic light now hangs, I see a plaza with a fountain and flowering trees that hosts open-air flea markets in the summer. Around that, I envision pathways between rows of shops, filled with people from the surrounding neighborhoods who are out for the night. They head to their favorite haunt, one of many kinds of pubs for every kind of person - the sports bar, the wine bar, the one that has live bands every weekend. I can imagine the unique oddities that would appear in such a place: the one convenience store that also acts as a public porch and always has people loitering in front of it, laughing and carrying on; the busker who's out playing an electric violin every week at the same time; the orange tomcat that lives nearby and comes through every once in a while to beg for food from sidewalk diners.
I envision a whole network of these types of pedestrian village centers through my town, one for each major neighborhood, and a network of railed streetcars connecting them all together. I see myself riding the streetcar. I see myself getting off at each stop to explore. I feel myself falling in love with all the small businesses blossoming, each village center bursting with its own identity, each transformed by the people who live and work there.
I see an easy walk to the store, one where I could learn the names and faces of regulars, or sit and listen to the busker before I head back home.
I see cars on the road growing fewer and fewer in number.
I see a quiet road outside my door.

Between Melody and Healing: The Journey of the Golden Rider
It was an autumn twilight as Lukas drove along the bypass road. The city walls, familiar to him, loomed ahead. Yet his gaze was fixed upon an imposing structure that rose just before the city walls. The nerve clinic he had heard of was more than just a medical facility – it was a monument of grandeur and fascination.
The clinic sprawled majestically across the grounds, its capacity seeming boundless. Lukas couldn't tire of admiring the curved towers and adorned facades. It was as if someone had consolidated the grandeur of all the shopping centers in the city into a single edifice. However, concealed behind these impressive walls were destinies known to only a few.
Lukas knew all too well what it was like when nerves got the best of you. He had once captured the hearts of people as the "Golden Rider." His music and stage presence had made him the darling of the city. Yet fame and pressure had gnawed at him until he eventually stumbled. The rider's gleaming armor had grown dull, and his melodies had lost their luster.
As he reached the clinic's grounds, a mixture of fear and hope washed over him. The city's lights burned in his eyes once more, as if bidding him a final farewell before he ventured into the clinic's darkness. The clinic's towers seemed to greet him and simultaneously enclose him. Lukas felt lonely and weary, as if years of hustle and bustle had suddenly weighed upon his shoulders.
The safety alert signals reminded him that he was now in a place where the line between reality and illusion could blur. The words "life-threatening schizophrenia" echoed in his mind. Lukas knew he had reached a turning point – he would have to battle the demons that raged within his mind.
The treatment centers within the clinic were state-of-the-art, yet Lukas wondered if they would ever address the true causes of his internal struggles. Here, within these healing halls, he might find answers that eluded him elsewhere. And so, his journey into a realm of therapies, conversations, and self-reflection began.
As the seasons changed and time passed within the clinic, Lukas slowly began reassembling the puzzle pieces of his soul. He realized he was more than just the "Golden Rider" or a child of this city – he was a human with dreams, fears, and hopes.
For Lukas, the bypass road's clinic became not only a place of healing but also a realm of enlightenment. He learned to confront his inner demons and embrace his past. Gradually, the embers of his creativity rekindled, and his melodies began to radiate once more.
And so, the tale of the "Golden Rider" intertwined with the majestic nerve clinic, composing a symphony of transformation and reawakening. For sometimes, it's the darkest moments in life that have the potential to ignite the light of change – much like the city's lights that burned in Lukas' eyes as he embarked on his journey to the clinic.

help me escape homelessness and live with my lover!
If you can't help me with donations, reblogs are always appreciated!
Also I have hella bad waiting mode anxiety that is made better by knowing what to expect after what I'm waiting for happens, so if anybody wants to tell me how this process will go, I would greatly appreciate it.
Bonus points if you give me some ideas in the notes of mundane things to do with my wife!

anyway, so the hermit permits: this feel VERY MUCH like the hermits going “we did not like how little we used the shopping district in 8 and 9, we want to create a mechanism that not only brings it back but hopefully forces more collaboration by preventing one guy from having the super shop”. I’m here for it! interested in seeing how it plays out going forward, it definitely at the very least intrigues me! as does iskall mentioning that if he doesn’t keep up with demand the other hermits are allowed to rebel and take his rocket permit, sir what does that mean,

I was at a really white-themed shopping center and there were really cuddly pigeons that kept climbing on me. I protected them from a really persistent ginger cat.
