I constantly think about the Redwall animated series (1999) and Watership animated series (1999)
When I re-watch those I wonder what Warrior Cats would've been like if they had an animated series in that similar style and vain. How much would actually changed?
Watership Down the series added a lot of newer conflicts, characters, pretty much this series exclusive things and their own twists to the story. Follows the story in the beginning and then it gets wild!
I should make a retrospective on these two series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Redwall animated series pretty much follows the story where season 1 follows Matthias, Season 2 follows Mattimeo, and Season 3 follows Martin the Warrior.
But I was an idiot and I watched the series backwards from Martin, to Matthias, to Mattimeo. Still got the same enjoyment either way.
It'd make a fun exercise. Creating short animations of canon Warriors in similar style of these two already pretty fun to watch animated series of great books.

Might be actually pretty heckin' fun! I can feel the gears in my mind turning just trying to create this and make it come to life!
So which one of you guys read and watched The Silver Brumby on YouTube? I never got far but what are your thoughts? I never actually well.. fully finished but, as far as I seen it's pretty nice lol

i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that su’s treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.
two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voices—it’s been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise they’re over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!
#i don’t know if pay rates differ per networks#but a.ivi and s.urrashu have said that they needed to work outside of su in order to make sufficient funds#it only makes me wonder what other ways su suffered from a lower budget#that we as the audience never got to see#in the vein of the too-little characters complaint#another part of that is that low-stakes episodes should’ve been abt the main cast instead of the townies#like last one out of beach city and too short to ride vs restaurant wars and kiki’s pizza delivery service#i definitely see that especially since that isn’t budget related#nor would it seem to be network related (even if cn had an ‘episodic episodes’ quota it could still be abt the gems#(another side note: /would/ cn even have a requirement that the show make episodes that can be watched standalone?#this is a question for the people who were around when su was airing#what episodes often got rerun?#was it the townie eps or the lore eps?#for example i heard that su once did a ‘peridot event’ where they just reran peridot episodes#which had eps that skip around in the show#did they even care about airing the story so that it made sense anyways?#id get it if the low stakes townie episodes were the ones getting rerun))#but i have such a boring view on that which is i think it’s simply because the creators like townie eps#like in interviews r.ebecca s.ugar has said she’s the type to be really invested in background characters#answers in interviews have been crafted in ways to hide what’s really going on though tbf#prime example of this is rebecca and ian saying the wedding being interrupted was meant to follow the common trope#when later in the art book they said that it was bc cn rejected the ep bc it ‘wasn’t interesting enough’#both could simultaneously be true! it’s a psychology thing though where people make up nice-sounding explanations behind what they create#in retrospect because they want it to be thought out in such a nice way they believe in it#the bigger problem is that not matter how many episodes there are of them#it can be hard for ppl to be invested in the townies the same way they are invested in the main cast#i’m sure that a million writers have made surefire advice on how to get an audience to care about characters#but off the top of my head i think it’s because 1. most don’t have strong motivations to get truly invested in#(exception is ronaldo but people find him too annoying to care about him)#okay i had more points and explanations but i hit the tag limit and idk if anyone is actually reading this so bye

About the murder game, what would the victims do once they're killed and thrown back into the real world? Do they just wait for the others or do they simply leave to do their own thing?
I was going to say "stuck playing Tetris for hours on end" but then I thought that would be a waste of such immersive VR technology!
Clearly, the answer is to put them in the care of someone who is already a proven, responsible caretaker of people trapped in the digital world until the game resets!

Yes, I watched the pilot a few days after it came out! Dess keeping track of modern trends for once?! It's a miracle! Pomni is a darling(*) So is Ragatha and Caine, in his own special way, though I'm looking forward to whatever knowledge Jax is maybe holding onto as well?
(*) Assuming that the IHNMAIMS parallels end with Caine's inspiration, that is...!
TLDR, I'm enjoying it very much!

everyone talks about how tiktok destroys people's attention spans with its short-form content, but i've never seen anyone talk about how constantly watching long-form video essays on youtube basically has the opposite effect.
like i'll play a 25-30 minute video and be shocked when the youtuber apologizes for how long it is. that's not a long video, that's a delightful morsel of content. a smackerel, if you will.

I love reading x reader fanfictions, but I'm a tall person, so sometimes I laugh at the scenarios. Like sometimes the author will write that you put your head on their chest but I'm like a foot taller than the character sometimes and laugh my ass off. Or like they'll pick you up or something (it's not that I doubt they could, cuz like the short characters I simp for are strong af. I just don't know how the balancing would work LMAO).
Or sometimes just for shits and giggles I'll look up the character’s height after reading a fanfiction and then find out they're taller than me. Like, oop, let me re read but in a different perspective lmao.

To celebrate finally finishing up for Christmas, a basically random selection of pieces from 2022.
I really didn't draw that much this year, not in comparison to 2021 and certainly not in comparison to 2020, and I've not always been happy with what I came up with. I did some commissions, events, and went quite hot and heavy with the not-safe-for-tumblr earlier in the year, only one of which is shown in cropped form here.
Most of everything else was...well, see above. The usual.
I'm hopeful for 2023 though; I have a few wips to finish, including a short comic, which is something I've not tried before. So we'll see how that goes.
Links to original posts of the above:

I'll probably pull clips from it later, but I did listen to the whole I Live In Your House QnA while working and it's fucking fantastic and so fascinating. Absolutely worth watching/listening to if you liked the original short film, or even just found the premise overall interesting but can't handle horror.

one of my best friends is about to have a baby today........... so weird to be on the periphery of something so life changing. I want to go "life is going to change forever" as if it hasn't already
#I was thinking last night about how different we both are from the versions of us that were being young and active and busy and fit in pgh#before the pandemic and before her very targeted focused dating efforts yielded her the result she wanted (her now-husband)#[also I don't say that cattily lol she had the most coolheaded and down-to-business approach to dating bc she knew what she wanted.#and it worked!]#anyways I think back on that halcyon year of 2019 when we went to spin classes and spent every weekend doing something#or hanging out in her tiny mt. washington studio where we could watch downtown buzz at night#truly it was such a short period of time in retrospect. she convinced me to move here + then a year and a half later the whole world changed#and so too did we#I miss the her of those years (and I miss the me) but I'm making peace with not getting her back. it's cool to see her on this new journey#which she has worked so very hard for. like I cannot overstate the methodical and intentional way in which she has shaped her life to be#what she wants out of it. accounting for many bumps along the way that she's weathered admirably.#anyways within the next 48 hours she should be a mom. that's crazy#I feel weird when everyone around me is making lifechanging moves while I'm ''ho hum where should I go on vacation in the next 2 years'' lol#ay yai yai. strange to not want things other people want and being fine with that until you start losing touchpoints with your peers#then you're like. hang on now. what am I supposed to be doing right now

a rambling retrospective on the last year as a new Critter
So, it's been about a year (a little over) since I fully dipped into the Critical Role fixation.
Last year around this time, we got the other Halloween episode in Whitestone, just before the Mighty Nein Reunited two-parter, and gee, we just got a Halloween episode in Whitestone and we're about to go into a Mighty Nein Reunion this week! And a LIVE show at that, the first one since pre-COVID!
And last year at this time, I was just starting into a work D&D group and I'd just gotten my first set of dice at a renaissance festival, and I'd just bounced around a bunch of compilation videos, several oneshots, and some out-of-context Campaign 2, along with The Legend of Vox Machina season 1. I was just barely dipping my toe into the wider CR + TTRPG world.
So much has happened since then.
Every Thursday since that Halloween in Whitestone last year with Bells Hells, I've been tuning into the stream (despite the ET time difference) and sometimes even making it through all the way (for some exhaustion points that are still worth it). I watched more of the oneshots (the Call of Cthulu one and Nautilus Ark being particular favorites I've seen in 2023). I've also watched a lot more of Campaign 2 and even went back into Campaign 1, bought myself some merch (I'm actually wearing the Hot Topic Ashton shirt, haha), and I got friends into The Legend of Vox Machina before and after Season 2 dropped on Amazon.
I even wrote a little fic when Matt slammed us all with the Apogee Solstice on the 8th anniversary session :)
And, as anyone who's been following me has noticed, I got the Exquisite Exandria cookbook and have been making the recipes from it whenever I can, and that's also been amazing.
Plus, I've watched some Dimension 20 (Mentopolis was incredible and Burrow's End rn is fascinating) and dipped into Worlds Beyond Number thanks to that.
My work D&D group has since dissolved, but I took a leap of faith and I joined a pickup oneshot game of D&D5e in April, and around late June/early July, the DM of that game invited me with a few others to a campaign set in that homebrew world the oneshot was based in.
We started playing at the end of July, and I've been having such a blast. Each session is so much fun and the highlight of any given week we play. I cannot believe I went so long in my life without having D&D until this point, honestly. But I'm so glad I have it now.
All of this to say, a lot has happened in the last year, and I'm so glad to have stumbled into the Critter community and gained knowledge of Critical Role and the wider TTRPG sphere as a whole. The fandom has been so welcoming and supportive in a way I haven't felt from many fandoms in my experience. It feels like it's been more than just a year of being invested in Critical Role, but I suppose that the fervent intensity of the story and the people involved and the genuine excitement in front of and behind the cameras.
I guess, just... thank you for everything. And here's to many more years of Critterdom to come :)
Love y'all very much, and is it Thursday yet?

10 Years
I wanted to do a quick little write up thing just looking back on stuff. This year marks my 10th year working in the animation industry as a storyboard artist for feature animation, and it's been a journey. When I started I was still trying to understand what it meant to be a story artist all the while at the same time trying to improve my artistic skills. Despite starting out on an incredibly challenging project, the experience prepared me for what was to come down the line, by sharpening and pushing my drawing abilities, and teaching me how to stand up for myself in a creative field. Developing my own voice as a story artist and storyteller is still an ongoing process for me, but over the years I have grown more excited about story and I love diving into how to work out story problems. With each project I am so thankful and grateful to be able to have worked with so many supportive, kind and awesome people. The time has flown by incredibly fast, and I'm looking forward to the future to keep creating for many more years.

very curious if our society (youtube) has evolved to producing twenty-four-hour length video essays yet. bc ik on average the video essays i watch tend to be around an hour, some shorter some longer but this is my preferred length, 2-3 hours is on the longer side for me but if it's a topic i'm into or a creator i like i'm down for it, longest i've personally watched is 5-ish hours (tho that one was broken up into a lot of smaller segments and not meant to be consumed in one sitting) but i know for a fact there are much longer video essays out there. the longest i've seen in my recommended is eleven hours but i know there must be more out there. what is the video essay event horizon? have we reached "videos of nerds (complimentary) infodumping about niche topics which would take an entire day nonstop to consume"
#yes i am a video essay enjoyer if you couldn't tell#longest video on my ''favorite video essays'' playlist is ''understanding snapewives'' by biz barclay which is just under 3 hours#(10/10 recommend even outside of the fandom history there's a lot of fascinating stuff about religion and how we connect to media)#(and it's very well researched)#i think the longest i've watched is babbity kate's deep dive into the american girl doll ''kirsten''#which covered every piece of kirsten media ever created and analyzed the historical accuracy#kate's planning on doing a series like this for every american girl doll in release order which i'm excited for#i didn't even like kirsten as a kid but the video was very well done and engaging even if you're not as big of a doll fan as she is#longest i've had recommended to me is ''a brief retrospective of the simpsons' golden age'' which is ELEVEN HOURS#but i'm very tempted to watch it bc i am a simpsons nerd and it seems to be divided into smaller essays season by season#i think i saw a tumblr post about a fnaf lore video essay that was ridiculously long but idk if that was longer than 11 hours#i should also make a poll about preferred video essay length bc idk if my opinion is the majority#most of my favorites are 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. if it's too short (like less than 20 minutes) i'll skip it#(unless it's a creator i like who wanted to put out something short between big projects)#and if it's too long (over 3 hours) i have to be in the right mood even tho it'll probably be multiple sittings to finish it#(again unless it's a creator and topic i like and it's something i've been waiting to hear their thoughts on)
