i was starting to think like “idk tiki taka is pretty okay i guess, ive heard lots of kpop in this like fun, bright, energetic style though” and that’s definitely true... i’ve definitely heard a lot of stuff in this style, you know? and then it hit me.... that’s not really been the case with weki meki before. like... their whole thing is that they combine elements of that bright energetic girlgroup style (like Twice-y, Cherry Bullet-y, Nature-y, Elris Summer Dream-y, idk) with more “weird” elements and some girlcrush-style stuff, like the jarring transitions in IDLYG, the fact that La La La actually kinda goes hard as fuck if you think about it, the duality of Crush, and the wacked-out hollow-sounding almost industrial synth throughout Picky Picky... this song has nothing like that as far as i can tell?
that got me thinking like... maybe i set my expectations too high. is this really a comeback? it has been called a repackage album, but is it like a new full single to go alongside with Picky Picky, or.... and like, this is the most likely thing.... is it a 2-year anniversary “thank you” song? if i’m trying to place Tiki Taka in the context of their title tracks, it’s kinda disappointing because it sounds like any generic girl group could have put this out, but if i put it in that context then i actually think its pretty good.
it’s been tough to find information about this leading up to it, as well... i’ve seen people call it a comeback, but i dont recall if i’d actually seen the official weki meki twitter call it that, i think it mightve been just fans. and its weird for a title track to come out a week before the music video, that’s kind of unheard of... but “fan songs” do this kind of thing a lot, actually. dreamcatcher’s “over the sky” came out before piri, but the video came out like several months after piri, and it was just a performance of the choreography in a park haha. very low budget, just a “thank you” to their fans for all the support. i get the feeling that’s what Tiki Taka might be, i get the feeling that when the video comes out it’ll be a smaller budget and just be sort of a nice little thing to say thanks for two years, you know? and that’s cool, i like that, i just think if that’s what this is, it wasn’t conveyed well.
i could be way off and this is just the first weki meki title track that i’m kind of let down by... and like... i mean... i hope not, lol. it’s also possible that i’ll have some revelation and wake up tomorrow and listen to tiki taka and suddenly its amazing and i notice things about it that i havent noticed yet, that’s really possible lol
