pj was born the second of three children in shrike heights, colorado, where his family (both his mother's side and father's side) have resided for generations.

his upbringing is one that he'd consider to be perfectly average. his parents weren't well off, but they were comfortable, pj having everything he needed.

while he bickered with his siblings, and sometimes disagreed with his parents, he feels lucky to have the family that he has; despite differences, they share a lot of love, and they do get along quite well overall.

from the second his parents saw his personality begin to develop as a baby, pj has always been described as a sweetheart. he's always been sensitive, considerate, clingy and affectionate.

he always cared to be with his family, spending time with them, making what he'd later come to realize are cherished, core memories. as he grew older, his fondness extended to more than only his family.

from young, pj was always extremely friendly and social. he thrives with company and positive attention. he always wanted to be everybody's best friend, and was always around the neighbourhood trying to achieve that.

as he got older, and in particular as his family grew older alongside him and began doing more of their own things - as much as they remained a tight knit family - pj relied on his other relationships more.

he began working as a server at a diner as a teenager (so that he had enough money to take whoever his current significant other was at the time out on dates) but after one too many failed relationships with his co-workers, he found work elsewhere.

he began working at showtime in his late teens, after high school, and he vowed to never mess around with any of this co-workers. showtime helped to encourage his love for romance films and romcoms, and while it's not a big flashy career, pj is extremely happy in his position.

all pj wants to do is to find love; he thought it was hard enough before the mall was built, but now that there's the added factors such as the killers... pj is afraid that he'll never find the one.

additional information -

pj is a ball of light, a bright spark, a ray of sunshine. he's a happy-go-lucky type of person, and while he's capable of feeling every emotion adequately, he's mostly found smiling and happy.

he's very charming, and he develops crushes easily. he's more sweet than he is flirtatious, though he definitely does his fair share of flirting.

he's pretty open to pursuing most people, but he's also respectful about the chase. he tries to follow mannerisms and context clues to assess whether or not a person will be receptive or not, and if he does read a situation wrong and try to pursue someone not into it/him, as soon as they show the smallest sign of not being into it, he'll stop.

Neptune was born to parents whose obsessions lay in the stars. His father is an accomplished Astrophysicist who currently works in the British National Space Centre (BNSC) and his mother has been a life-long academic and Mythologist, working as a professor for several years before retiring to focus on taking care of her brood of five boys. They gave each of their children names that signified their shared passion for the universe, resulting in a collection of names that brought no small amount of teasing from the school children.

Neptune is the youngest and also the black sheep of the family. Although he got along well enough with all of them, he was simply very different. All his siblings were very academic, evidenced by the paths they chose in life. The eldest, Atlas, followed in their father's footsteps, becoming a physicist as well. Aries, the second-eldest, currently works as a professor in Oxford university and dedicates his life to research of Celtic and Norse Mythology. His other two brothers, Draco and Saturn, both became engineers. Despite being surrounded by scientists and academics, all Neptune ever wanted to do was create. Rather than find answers in the universe, his lifelong dream had been to transcend the universe and drown himself in fantasy.

He had always been an avid reader, obsessive over various types of fiction and a lover of poetry. His love for the arts did not stop there, however, as he was always drawn to visual arts as well, captivated by the ability of artists to create new realities with their brushstrokes. Instead of focusing on any subject outside of the arts, Neptune spent his school days doodling and drabbling, always lost in his own thoughts. While his parents were far from unsupportive, the disappointment was still there, hanging over Neptune like a storm cloud. It took a lot of intention for him to remain positive in the face of adversity, but he did. He had to believe in himself and believe that his choices would lead him to a destiny he felt comfortable with.

Despite not being religious, his parents were still traditional when it came to social norms. After all, his father had always worked for the government in some way or another, and his mother was privileged enough to teach in some of the most prestigious and inaccessible institutions. The status quo was all they knew. And so Neptune always felt as though there were parts of him that he needed to hide form them. And so hide, he did.

His parents tended to focus too much on his brothers anyway, happy to tell tall tales to their friends about their accomplishments. And so little Blue as they called him, with his books and his amateur poetry and unfinished novels and modest job as as a tattoo artist, fell to the background. Neptune hid in his own obscurity in hopes that they would never come to learn that he had no interest in the slew of girls his mother introduced him to, nor had he any desire to live a traditional life of any kind.

He was successful in managing to hide his attraction for his own gender for the longest time until his private life was exposed suddenly and without warning. And when it was, loosely stitched ties to his family tore apart at the seams. Unable to deal with the disappointment or the fallout, he ran away, hoping for a new start in a new place. He felt as though his parents would be happier if he were far away, too, since it meant that they could continue to pretend they had a normal, brilliant, nuclear family. Neptune would just be a blip in their perfect universe.

He had settled on Shrike as a result of nothing but pure random selection and because of how easily he had found a job at the mall. He is unaware of what he got himself into by moving to Shrike, and so he begins his life here with nothing but abundant optimism at the possibility of a new start.

Born & Raised in Shrike Heights. Central Business District to be precise. Still lives at home/hoping to move out soon!

Raised by his grandparents, the youngest of four siblings. He and his siblings all have the same mom but different fathers (the middle two are twins!). Though he has no idea who his dad is, his mom is very much alive and the two are pretty close. His mother just never had the capacity to actually raise her kids and after enough episodes, she was forced to give up custody to her parents. But Zeke still maintains a relationship with her despite a varying degree of opinions from the rest of his family.

Besties w/ Dustin Waerea ( @takemecn) like that's his boy for life for LIFE. They've grown up together and have always supported each other. He's truly Dustin's #1 fan and cheerleader.

Zeke was a happy kid, or at least he tried to be. For all the anger that life could hold, Zeke still figures he got a good deal. Sure it wasn't traditional but his grandparents stepped up in a major way and they've been financially stable enough that Zeke has always had a pretty comfortable life.

He's most insecure about his intelligence, having struggled through most of school, pretty sure he wouldn't have graduated if it wasn't for his friends pulling hims through. He decided not to bother with college and got a job instead.

He LOVES his jobs. He started at the roller disco first and is an extremely enthusiastic and hilarious instructor. He's pretty talented on his skates but he does it with such ease he makes it seem like anyone can do it and he believes it. His sessions at the jazzercise studio are just as energetic and he truly takes pride in what he does. He's a pretty active person and it's hard for him to be still at times so having high energy jobs are perfect for him.

his mother was young and unwed when she fell pregnant with him, and she married his father at eight months pregnant, just in time.

by the time ted was born, their relationship was in shambles. 

his father wasn’t a good person. he was much older than ted’s mother, their dynamic was unhealthy and he mistreated her. 

his mother left his father when he was still only a baby, and ted has never questioned the decision or felt the need to seek out the man that makes up half of his genes. 

when he was seven years old, his mother met a much nicer man, they fell in love, got married, and then at eight, ted became a big brother. 

his little sister is his favorite person in the world. at times she’s been the only person who ted truly cares about, and the only one who he believes cares for him.

upbringing 

ted was a happy child, not understanding that his situation was unfortunate and blindly believing all his mother did for him in an attempt to act as though they lived a good life. 

their days were filled with love and laughter, and even the most hideous struggles they were made to face were disguised as incredible adventures for the sake of ted. his mother was a dedicated mother and actor.

he truly loved his life despite his circumstances, until things changed. when ted was seven, his mother remarried, and very quickly ted became second to his mother’s own wants, needs, and happiness. 

his sister was born when he was eight, and he became even less of a priority. despite his family having grown so much in size, and despite them being in a better and safer financial situation, ted felt lonelier and more upset than ever. 

he was a lonely and depressed child. his condition only improved when his sister grew old enough to be a proper companion and friend to him.

ted was always the best brother, and together, the two children had a lot of fun. their parents selfishly cared more for themselves and their relationship, but the siblings didn’t mind when they had each other for company and support. 

his life returned to being good for some years, or so he thought. the truth was that his happiness - even what he experienced as a young child - was always a facade. an act put on first by his mother and then later by his own defence and coping mechanisms.

the happiness began to dull, his sister began to grow up and live her own life, and ted fell back into his terribly depressed and lonely state.

this time was the beginning of ted’s endless amounts of attempts to better himself and his life, but unfortunately every single thing he did ended in a failure grander than the last. 

his life became more miserable with each month that passed, and each next year was unbearable. he failed with family, with education, with work, relationships, interests and everything in between. 

constant failure and lack of support wore on ted as a person. reaching thirty and having never experienced anything real or worthwhile was his breaking point. so many years of heartbreak and gloom was too much. 

he attempted to take his life, but was unsuccessful in doing so. what he thought was a way out ended up being a way into an even worse situation. 

upon failing, he wanted to hide it from his family, but he couldn’t.

he was so ashamed of his sister finding out that he had almost left her behind, alone, like he always had been. 

despite the two siblings having grown apart, his sister showed up and she took him back to live with her in shrike heights; she was devastated to find out how he felt, and what he had done, but she vowed that together, they would get his life back on track.

ted doesn’t think that the setting of shrike heights is a good one for him, but he’s found that his sister is the support and motivation that he needs right now. he’s trying so hard for her, harder than he might have ever tried before. 

education 

ted could have done extremely well in school if he ever cared to apply himself. 

in the beginning he tried to make friends and connections that would better his life, but after becoming a victim of teasing and bullying almost immediately, he was too beaten down to try again. 

in an attempt to better his situation, a few times he tried to join different clubs and societies, only to have bad experiences in each and leave them before he ever got the chance to get anything good from them. 

he’s never been athletic, and was teased enough in gym class to never brave any sport teams. 

overall, school was a horrific experience, and the older he got, the more the bullying got worse, the less effort he put into any of his work. 

he ended up dropping out before he even reached his senior year.

he’s considering shrike university, but while he has the drive to try for something now, if not for himself then for his sister, he just doesn’t know what he’d like to do, and he doesn’t want to begin anything that he will go on to fail.

work 

ted has had a string of retail jobs since he was a teenager. 

he’s never been the best employee; he has potential to do brilliant work, but not in the roles he obtains. 

customer service is a nightmare for him, yet the only kind of job he feels qualified to work after not completing high school.

he has a bad habit of quitting jobs when it’s not actually necessary; he’s afraid of how bad failure makes him feel so he can get extremely flighty.

he’s trying harder than he ever has before to succeed with work in shrike. 

he applied to the black cat as he felt it would likely be the safest space for him, with unique people working alongside him, saving him from potential bad treatment from those uncomfortable with him being unlike themselves. 

he wishes he could be going on to work elsewhere, a job that isn’t just retail, but he doesn’t know what he’d be interested in doing specifically and he doesn’t believe he’s qualified to move out of the mall yet. 

as much as he has a history of being flaky and a bad employee, it’s always been his circumstances, he doesn’t actually have an inability to be a good employee. 

relationships 

ted has never been in a real relationship before. 

romance and sex don’t come to him naturally, as much as he’s constantly craving that kind of companionship. 

he had his first kiss in his mid twenties, which is a fact he tries to hide out of embarrassment (although there’s nothing wrong with it).

all of his little experience took place when he was in his mid twenties, and his failure in this department makes him struggle to try for more.

because of how beaten down he feels, he’s completely submissive. he needs the other person to initiate everything, though he’s able to reciprocate when it’s being controlled by the other. 

he has the potential to be an extremely sweet and loving partner. he’s good to others, and would be especially good to a partner.

his biggest issue with trying to find a partner is how terribly he thinks of himself.

overall, ted is trying his hardest to figure out what his true interests are right now.

anything that sparks joy inside of him he would consider an interest, and he tries to hold on to them for as long as possible to try to feel more joy.

his interests come and go quickly for the most part. he’s always trying new things desperately hoping to find something that helps him make sense of his life and his time. 

he likes a lot of general things such as music, films, television and books. he’s not passionate about any of them per se, but finds himself glad when they come up in conversation as at least he knows a bit about what they’re talking about. 

watching television is what he does most, compared to reading or listening to music, etc. he enjoys keeping up to date with the latest shows and he always catches the latest films.

he’s not athletic, though he enjoys being outside in nature. when he’s in a bad state of mind he tends to stay in, shut off from the world, so being out makes him feel good. 

he’s very mildly interested in a lot of things; travel, science, technology, video games, pop culture. once again, though, he’s on a journey to figure out his proper interests and passions.

the black cat. he doesn’t love working but it keeps him in a routine, and keeps his sister from worrying about him, so he works often.

his sister’s home downtown. he tries to not stay home too often as he associates that with bad mental health, but he still hangs out with his sister at home plenty. 

the mall. particularly places like the food court and julio’s, places where he can sit and watch and just be in the town.

the library. he likes to sit and watch here, too, but his favorite part about the library is all of the resources on so many different things. it’s a great way to try to figure out new interests and passions.

all of the parks in town. it doesn’t matter which one, or where, ted enjoys hanging around these spots in town. out of everywhere in town, he’ll keep going back to the parks on his walks or his days off.

in general, ted is the kind of person who is always randomly popping up new places all around town. he’s still quite aimless and lost, but in doing everything that he can to find purpose and joy, he’s really adventuring and getting out there in shrike.

ted is a sweetheart who’s very clearly always just trying his best. he’s kind-hearted and gentle spirited.

he’s been through a lot, and shows signs of previous trouble, mostly in his awkward mannerisms. 

despite how awkward he can be, ted always means well, and that shines through in his personality and his mannerisms. 

he’s charming, in an aloof sort of manner. he’s not very well put together, but he’s trying his hardest in a very endearing manner. 

he’s friendly, he tries to be and wants to be, but it’s also clear in his interactions that he doesn’t have the most experience with having friends.

he has a habit of mimicking the people he admires, and that’s most often characters in television and films. he doesn’t do this in a disingenuous manner, only in an attempt of getting ahead and bettering himself. 

ted tries to be hopeful, but he still has plenty of bad days. he can be reserved, quiet, sluggish and standoffish on those bad days. 

thankfully he’s doing better, especially with the more he tries for improvement, but he’s only human, and with such an intense history of mental health issues, he definitely has hard times.

when he’s doing well, he can be social, witty, and funny. he often has to take a small step over awkwardness to get into the flow of that, but the more he’s comfortable with someone, the easier it gets. 

his first impression is often different from how he is when someone gets to know him.

he does tend to improve socially the more someone knows him, but then he has periods where he completely disappears and isolates himself if he’s not doing well.

hello friends!! okay this is my last character fr fr (lolol) as usual i’m going to spill out a lot of forming thoughts. avery is also pretty new to me though she draws some inspiration from a few old characters of mine. more about her below!!!

About Avery:

Born and raised in Shrike Heights to a fairly wealthy and well established family in Shrike Heights. 

The middle of three children. She has an older sister and a younger brother, both of whom she has a complicated relationship with for various reasons. Her father is an aspiring state senator while her mother is probably better at being a socialite and shopper than an actual mother. #mommyanddaddyissues. 

Avery has always tried to keep her relationship with her family balanced. Do what she needed, keep her parents happy, look after her siblings where she could and do the least possible to cause any tension. But because of it she’s created kind of her own entire life outside of them. Most of her real and true friends are far removed from this world and she keeps most of her hobbies pretty to herself. The Avery you see out with her friends is very different than the one you see when she’s in her family home or out in public with them. She’s been great at acting as if she’s the dutiful daughter her parents expect her to be. It’s easier not to muddy the waters. At least that’s what she tells herself. 

Avery really wants to be a writer. She dreams of seeing her books at bookstores one day and she wishes she could write more extensive articles about all that’s going on in town. For the longest time she wanted to study journalism but quite frankly she feared her father’s exploitation of this talent. Feeling like he would force her to write things that made their family look less implicit than they were in anything involving big money in Shrike, especially the mall. So she settled for TV. Local news to be exact. And in a role where she didn’t have to be in front of the camera but could still work on some really great stories. The privacy of the broadcast station also allows her a bit of protection from her father and his ideals. 

Starting out as an intern in college, Avery is very at home at the broadcasting station and is responsible for much of the prep that goes into presenting their morning and evening news. She dabbles in the sports but usually focuses on the every day stories and has of course been deeply involved in relaying the stories of the attacks in town. though she’s had tense conversations with her bosses about telling the truth that their police obviously aren’t letting them know. but that’s been an uphill battle over all. But she loves the reporters she works with, the personality of the anchors and even more, the deep connections she has to the local community. Even so, it’s still not her dream and she’s been dying to find a way to get her writing out there, even if it’s under another name for the time being.  

Pretty to herself about her sexuality but is overall pretty private about her love life. Meaning she doesn’t really have one but loves a long and stimulating conversation. She has a few close friends but because of her own whirlwind of a life has often struggled to let too many people get too close. She’s definitely had some serious relationships and I can see her having been in love at least once. But usually she gets scared about introducing anyone to her family since they’re pretty judgmental. And she tends to date people who her family probably wouldn’t approve of. 

Despite her complicated relationship with her older sister, she does love her a lot and through her has a niece who she absolutely adores. It’s been because of her niece that her relationship with her sister has improved. Her brother is kind of a little shit but she loves him anyway and is determined to not let him get brainwashed into being an asshole by their father. 

Honestly Avery is really lovely. Slightly closed off but really deeply cares about her hometown and trying to put an end to these attacks. She’s not necessarily interested in investigative reporting but she is interested in how many times Shrike government has mishandled the attacks. It’s something she constantly fights with her father about since he’s pretty good friends with the Mayor. 

She is definitely someone who loves a good chat, ask more questions than she shares about herself. Really rooted in the community, remembers folks names and loves to send a good care package or thank you card. She’s attentive that way. 

However, even with all the shit she talks, she does still accept the money her parents give her which is why she still arrives with a smile whenever they ask her too. This has been a big source of tension for her lately because she feels like she’s constantly betraying herself. 

She got a job at Duchess Jewellers, not because she needed it but because she wanted to have some kind of income that didn’t come from her parents. Her parents still don’t know about this gig because she doesn’t work full hours and hasn’t told them in the slightest. But if they do find out, she figured working with high end jewelry wasn’t the worst thing. And she loves to help people find the perfect piece for themselves or a loved one. Even more she loves the chance to be in the mall where stories are happening every day.

Okay friends! Apollo is a brand new character of mine so as usual I’m going to spill out a bunch of words below that may be subject to change at some point. Open for any and all plots you can think of!! 

Born and raised in Kansas

Uncle and legal guardian to Eilonwy Finch ( @urdamage​) 

Growing up, Apollo was a pretty happy child. He was close to his older brother and spent a lot of time with his parents. As a teenager he loved nothing more than cooking, which surprised his parents and though his father wished he would spend time doing something more practical, his mother loved it and taught him everything she knew. On any holiday he was right next to her in the kitchen helping her prep, not caring if his family made fun of him for the matching aprons he had with his mother. He could have stayed there forever, opened up a restaurant with his mother and lived the rest of his life happily. 

But as he was entering his twenties, he came home from his college classes one day to find his parents distraught and gathering their things to go to the hospital. His brother and his sister in law had been killed in a car accident. It changed everything for him and though for the first four years of his nieces life he had been an attentive and lively uncle, he totally disappeared into himself. 

Naturally he had to get away and he found that escape in the form of a woman named Zora. She was a dream, a salve for his pain and a motivator for his dreams. She convinced him to move to her hometown of Shrike Heights and he was all too eager to get away. Leaving behind his parents and niece (though he wrote and sent money when he could) he went off with Zora to Colorado. 

The distance proved to be good for him, he finished up his college courses, he worked some late shifts at the local gas station to have enough to get by and on late nights when he came home he would enter into his own form of therapy: cooking. He cooked whatever his heart wanted to and Zora loved to watch him. She was encouraging and gave him the motivation he needed to actually open up a place of his own. So they made a plan, looked for buildings, talked to real estate agents and figured out how much they needed to save. 

By 25, Apollo was a married man. He and Zora had a little ceremony and even went back to Kansas briefly to get his parents blessing. Everything felt like it was falling into place. 

Just as they were about to break ground on where the restaurant would be, Apollo received the call that his father had passed away. Devastated but now the only Finch man left, he went back home for a short while to be with his mother but she was insistent that he went back and continued his dream. Their dream he had called it. 

And so a year later he finally opened Late Riser and his mother had been present at the opening. It was a small 24 hour diner that not only mixed his mother’s recipes with his own but also provided wanderers of all kinds a place to rest. He was over the moon and he hung a picture of his mother and him cooking up in the kitchen. But what he didn’t know was that his mother’s visit to his opening would be the very last time he saw her. 

Just a few months later, he got a call from his niece and he suffered what he thought was the last blow of his 20s but he was wrong. 

When it came to be evident that he was Eilonwy’s only option for a guardian, he saw a side of Zora he had never expected to see. He hadn’t realized how much she didn’t want children and the idea of taking in a 12 year old terrified her. Their marriage had been suffering anyway with the opening of the restaurant. With his own loss he was spending all the time he had into making the diner be the best it could be. And Zora had started to grow resentful. Resentful enough that she gave him an ultimatum and he couldn’t believe that the woman he loved and married would want to make him put his own flesh and blood in foster care. 

Apollo made his decision clear and when he came home from the diner one early morning he found Zora’s things gone and a note with her wedding ring lying on the table.

So his 30s were spent being a legal guardian and working his ass off to keep the diner open, now the sole owner of it. He was not at all prepared to take care of a pre-teen but he didn’t really have a choice. He was dealing with his own grief, feeling completely alone in the world and not entirely sure how to relate to a young girl who had also lost so much. So he closed himself off. 

He made sure Eilonwy had what she needed. Groceries, clothes, school supplies, on some nights he would sit her at a booth in the Diner and his staff would entertain her and get to know her while he ran around the kitchen. In a lot of ways his staff were the ones who helped raise Eilonwy when he didn’t quite have the tools to.  

It wasn’t until Eilonwy moved out on her own that he truly realized how much he had failed her by not giving her more joy in their home, by letting his own grief overshadow hers but none of that hit him until he was facing another loss and an impossible choice. 

The construction of the new mall posed a serious threat to the diner and he had people coming in every day offering him money. He kept refusing, until it became clear he could either take a deal or get his ass sued into oblivion until they eventually bulldozed the space. 

So with no other options, he took the deal and now, late riser sits in the food court of the mall with an even smaller space and smaller staff. His mother’s picture still hangs above the counter and now that Eilonwy has moved out he spends even more time at the diner, working his life away and avoiding as much pain as possible. 

But he realizes now that his main purpose should be to re-connect with Eilonwy and make up for all the time he wasted. 

Headcanons:

A very kind and thoughtful man who can often come off as a bit grumpy and frazzled. Mostly because he’s always trying to carry the entire operation of the diner on his shoulders. 

Openly hates the mall, hates his bosses, hates everything about it and will tell anyone. But the pay is decent and he’s been able to hold onto his house and his business. Still, he hates it all (lol)

Before the mall opened he used to hold weekly “community dinners” at his house and invite all his friends from the community to come to his house and eat. He stopped after a while but is considering opening it up again with all the attacks and great need for community. 

Honestly an incredibly sad person. Eilonwy is the only family he has left and he feels he totally fucked up their relationship. She still doesn’t know why his wife left and he plans on never telling her. But despite his shortcomings, he would give up his entire life if it meant Eilonwy being okay and happy. She just reminds him so much of his brother and his parents that it’s hard for him to process sometimes. But with the killers about he’s determined to try to keep her safe how she can. When she was involved in an attack it was a big wake up call and he’s tried to be more present in her life since.

she had always assumed she would grow up to be a chef, but the loss of the diner was multi-layered, and georgette struggled to feel close to her parents, feeling as though she lost them again. 

all hope wasn’t lost, however, as she still had fiona, and her friends, and maybe her job at the mall would turn out to be great! 

it’s clear to see that the job at the mall turned out to be anything but great. since the very first attack, georgette has been terrified. having already lost so much, she couldn’t bear to lose another loved one, particularly not fiona. 

she continues to try her best to be positive, helpful, compassionate, useful and inspired, but it’s hard, and the job at the grocery store doesn’t help, in all honesty.

sinqua walls, bisexual, male + he/him ― hey look, it’s davis brooks! they’re 33 years old, they’ve lived in shrike heights for one week, and they’re currently working as a security guard in shrike mall. i heard they’re pretty uncertain, but i think they’re so brave at the same time. can they make it out alive?

Davis Brooks thought he had his entire life figured out. Coming from a military family, there was never any doubt about what he’d be. His grandfather was a Marine, and both his parents were in the army (which was how they met), and then his older brother and sister both followed in their footsteps, joining the navy and the air force, respectively. For him, it felt strange not to join the ranks as well, and beyond that, Davis genuinely wanted to, especially after his father was killed overseas. For Davis, there was no greater aspiration than protecting people, and that was what he wanted to do, so he joined the army like his parents.

Davis rose through the ranks, and he truly felt like he'd found his calling. This was his dream, and it was coming true. However, his personal life was not as fulfilling. He’d dated, but he’d never had a relationship last. And even worse, he wasn’t sure he’d ever loved any of his past significant others, and the longer things went this way, the more discouraged Davis became. Maybe love wasn’t something meant for him. Or maybe he just couldn’t get over his first love.

Growing up, Davis and his best friend Alec had been inseparable, and for Davis at least, it been more than that - he’d been in love. However, Alec had always claimed to be straight, so Davis had accepted that, never professing his love for the man. It was enough just to be near him. As they got older though, they began to drift apart as they went down different paths, Alec falling in with a bad crowd. Davis had tried to help, but there was only so much you could do for a person who didn’t want help. And eventually, they lost touch.

That changed though in a way Davis had never expected. There was a home burglary in his hometown, wherein one of the residents had been badly beaten, and Davis discovered on the news that the description of the perpetrator matched Alec, particularly a unique scar on his arm that Davis remembered from a biking accident. But that couldn’t be right; the Alec he knew wouldn’t hurt anyone. So he told no one, instead looking into it himself, and after a bit of searching, Davis tracked Alec down.

When they reunited, it was like no time had passed. Alec seemed genuinely happy to see him, and after talking, Davis knew that Alec couldn’t have done this. Alec swore he had nothing to do with the break-in, and he seemed aghast that suspicion was ever thrown on him. Davis believed him, though he was admittedly troubled when he learned that Alec had briefly dated the man who had been attacked. But Davis had been thrown off by the fact that Alec wasn’t as straight as he had assumed, and his friend revealed that he’d always had a crush on Davis. And then the men finally acted on their long-standing feelings for each other.

Alas, Davis had been wrong: the house was broken into again, and just as before, the man had been attacked. This time he’d had a security system installed, so he escaped major injury, but his security cameras had footage of the attacker fleeing. The footage was shown on the news, and when he watched it, Davis knew it was Alec despite the grainy footage. Even though the man’s face was covered, he recognized the scar and the tattoo on Alec's wrist he’d seen during their night together. Davis felt so foolish, and, angry with himself, told his mother everything, seeking her advice. She was furious he’d kept this to himself, and after his mother called the police, they converged on Alec's house. Wanting to talk to his friend, to try and convince him to turn himself in, Davis went there too, reaching the house at the same time as the cops. But Alec would not come quietly, and there was a standoff wherein two people were shot before they were able to get into the house and arrest Alec. One of them was an officer who was hit in the spine and would be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. The other was Davis, hit by what he thought was a stray bullet.

The wound could have been worse: Davis was shot in the shoulder, and apart from some physical limitations, he’d made a full recovery, though he was no longer deemed fit to serve due to his injury, and the army honorably discharged him. But Davis would never forgive himself for letting love blind him to Alec's true nature. His mother never told anyone else (her call to the police had been an anonymous tip), though the police briefly questioned Davis given the fact that he'd been there during the standoff. But Davis's mother could not look at him the same way, and Davis couldn’t blame her. So she suggested he move to Shrike Heights, the town she grew up in and where her mother still owned a home, having recently retired to Florida. After his siblings figured out what had happened, Davis had nothing keeping him in Boston.

while she's never known anything different than the lifestyle she was born into, she's always embraced it and felt complete comfort and belonging.

she was privileged enough to have so much support in her upbringing. while she knows who her biological parents are, and was raised by them, she's always looked beyond biology, and has had more than just the two parental figures to guide her in life.

honey grew up with almost complete freedom. she was a happy child, who was always always to play, explore nature, and grow and learn at her own pace.

out of the many things at her disposal there in the common, honey connected the most to the nature and the literature. she'd spend all day out in the forests and fields and by streams, and all night reading by candlelight.

when she was a young child she expressed interest in helping the older members of the commune with the markets and events they held. she wasn't the only child to do so, but either way, she was able to become involved and she always loved the work.

truthfully, honey never felt any need to stray outside of the commune. she explored the greater town of shrike, too, but she mostly resided safely within her commune.

her life was peaceful and beautifully free until the attacks begun. though she was safe in the peace of her commune, other commune members lived more affiliated with greater shrike, some of which were even hurt.

when the attacks began to get closer to home, honey didn't know how to cope with the terrible feelings that she had never experienced before. she had never been so upset, and she had never had such little control.

freedom and control were amongst the most important things in honey's life. she wasn't sure how to regain those things, but in an attempt to, she decided to stay closer to her family and those affected by the attacks.

though many think it's the worst idea, as always, those in the commune support her attempt at regaining control and her willingness to be around danger with the intent to help.

honey is an extremely bubbly person. she's comfortable with herself and with others, and that gives her a lot of confidence, especially socially.

she's a hippie, and that's clear in both appearance and personality. she believes in free love and hopes for a peaceful world. she doesn't push her beliefs onto anyone else, but she is very open and expressive about what she feels.

she's in love and obsessed with nature. she spends almost all of her time outside, even sleeping under the stars unless the weather is too cold, rainy or snowy.

she's extremely athletic. she was never involved in any team sports, but she used to watch sport matches at the schools, and then go home and teach her siblings in the commune all of the rules of the games so that they could play, too.

he realises in his teens that he doesn’t have to be the quiet, ordinary and lacklustre person he is in shrike heights when he spends his summers elsewhere with his father. he begins assuming different personalities each place he goes and this helps him build a real confidence and extraordinary persona.

by his mid teens florian grows into himself and the confidence he’s crafted. he becomes more popular and known around shrike heights, and he commits to just one more authentic persona even when spending his summers elsewhere.

he’s much more respectable in shrike heights than what he is elsewhere. he begins sleeping around during the summers and only commits to people when back in his hometown. he ends every relationship he has before he leaves every summer.

his routine is broken when he moves out at age eighteen and his father no longer picks him up to take him to stay wherever he’s moved to this year. florian realises he’s burnt a lot of bridges here.

he lives through a few bumpy years before he’s found himself once again. he builds more connections, gets a job at the brand new mall that is much better than his position at the grocery store, and he settles into adulthood - until his co-workers start dropping like flies in the shrike heights attacks.

drusilla grimes had always been less than exceptional. at least, that’s what their family would say. no one ever expected anything grand from them — so in return they didn’t do anything that warranted attention. they flew under the radar, more concerned with what was on tv and what was for breakfast rather than their schoolwork or making any friends. that was until they watched a soccer match once when flipping through channels and was suddenly enchanted. at age seven, they were put into soccer for the autumn season of ‘71.

finally, drew had a passion for something. it had taken long enough, murmured her parents, who internally didn’t have much hope that this would stick for her. as a result they didn’t attend many of her games, leaving her under the supervision of her older sister that always cheered her on no matter what. but it didn’t really matter if anyone had shown up or not, as drew’s passion for the sport is what ultimately drove her to succeed.

they would bring home trophies and awards season after season, carrying their team to victory almost every match. soon their parents had begun noticing their potential and put more pressure on them to perform better at school, however they discovered that the reason for drew’s disinterest in all things academic had been because of undiagnosed dyslexia.

after they were given a tutor and an ultimatum that they kept good grades in order to stay in soccer, they truly started to shine. they reached their peak at seventeen, when they were offered a scholarship to the university of adelaide, two thousand miles away from their hometown of brisbane. they graduated with a hard earned a 75 atar and made the move away from everything they’d ever known.

she wound up studying human sciences, where she would meet her first serious boyfriend in a shared class. they were hardly seen without one another, finding they had more in common than what they were taught at school — everyone underestimated him, too, and he did always have a soft spot for soccer, but especially now that he knew she was an athlete — he was perfect.

until he wasn’t. a few months into the relationship, drew had been given a set of rules that they had to follow in order not to upset their boyfriend: no parties, no revealing clothing ( unless he liked it, of course ), no talking to people that they didn’t know, and especially no talking to other men. whenever they fought back against these restrictions, they were initially verbally berated before it escalated into a physical issue and drew knew they needed to get out.

he wouldn’t leave her without a mark, though. the night she planned on leaving he discovered her packing her bags and attacked her, throwing her out of their shared apartment where she sustained internal injuries. she kept quiet at first, until her unchecked injuries ultimately led to a severe acl tear during a game that she couldn’t bounce back from, permanently suspending her from playing sports again.

drew was left without a purpose in the world, and did what she once knew best — run away from everyone and pretend like she didn’t care. she backpacked around australia for a while, until moving onto europe and eventually made her way to shrike heights, where she’s been for the past few months.
