“Wait, so you both fight in complete silence? The entire time?”

Other Hero stared at them with something akin to shock. At least they put in an effort to close their gaping mouth.

“I think they’re shy,” Hero mumbled, staring at the little whirlpool they were making in their drink with their straw.

“Have you tried talking first? Stirring up some banter?”

“...I’m shy.”

Move over mid hero, the real superhero anime is here. What a great first episode. The most relatable superhero ever, social anxiety, quiet, cute, sign me up.

I like the fact Shy “failed” to save the girl at the beginning of the episode. The little PTSD spell she had was very natural for a 14 year old who’s thrust into this role. She’s just a kid, but as a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. It’s an important lesson to learn for anyone, you just can’t save everyone.

Russian Hero is so mommy. Nice pep talk she gave to Shy to cheer her up, and then helping her save the mother and child trapped in the burning building. That’s a cool ability she has to be able to travel through portals. Her guidance and advice to Shy is really important at her young age

Another mommy dommy.. unilord gives off Goblin Slayer vibes. Kind of mysterious.. I’m definitely really interested in this world. Almost feels as if everything isn’t as it seems. Maybe some plot twists around the corner?

And would you look at that! Iko survived and is Shy’s seat neighbour. And she’s voiced by Toyama Nao 😍

"Can you not run away this time?" the hero said timidly.

The villain quirked an eyebrow.

"Not run away from. . .my own crime scene?" they asked.

The hero hugged themself and looked down at their shoes.

"I just don't want you to go."

“Who did that?” 

“Who did what?” Hero asked back, bit back more aggressively than they meant, harsher than they had ever spoken to any of their lovers, refusing to look at Civilian’s eyes. 

“Don’t play stupid, who cut your hair?” they kept their voice firm, approaching the bed. 

The cackling of a vanilla scented candle was all other sound that could be heard in between answers, Civilian had lit it up as they prepared the house for the arrival of their lovers home, always bloody and battered, always tired, angry, hurt in some way. They had grown accustomed to such a routine, to not panic at the sight of ache from the ones they loved, not for any scar, not for  any bruise, they were diligent, they knew how to treat them, how to comfort them after their cuts had been cleaned. 

Very few things made them crack.

That day, anger made their ears burn red. And for each moment Hero took to answer, something ugly blubbered inside Civilian.

 “I did,” Hero finally answered, voice just barely trembling at the end of the word “it was getting in the way of my duty.”

“Don’t lie to me.” 

“I’m not!” 

Civilian took a deep breath. 

“You grew your hair for three years, you cried that time it almost got burnt in a fire, you didn’t speak a word to Villain for weeks after” Civilian took their hand “I’ve never seen you take care of something better, you loved your hair long, we loved your hair long as well, it was part of you.” 

A strained whimper left their throat. 

“So I’m going to ask you one last time. Who. Cut. Your. Hair?” 

“Handler did, under Superhero’s orders.” 

“Go shower, I’ll talk to Villain.” 

“I don’t wanna make a big…”

“Stop,” Civilian answered, quickly cutting Hero short, standing from the side of the Hero, reaching for the door “whatever happens they brought upon themselves. I’ll finish dinner while you wind down, we’ll talk about this  when Villain comes home.” 

“Yes, love.” 

Civilian’s eyes softened at the low, almost meek tone called their attention right back at Hero. 

“I’m sorry angel, I’m so very angry right now,” they said, extending a hand once more to touch Hero’s face, stroking their cheek with their thumb “but not at you, never at you.”

Hero leaned into their touch, holding the back of their hand to bury themselves deeper into the touch. 

“I mean you look good anyways, I’m sure Villain will think so too, you know they like them rugged.” 

Both laughed lightly, halfheartedly. 

“I’ll fix that mess they left after dinner.” Civilian said at last, kissing the crown of the other’s head.

People, I get so overly angry at the stories of others being forced to cut their hair, I think it's such a direct attack to someones autonomy and self, I wanted to express such just because (I never even wear my hair long).

Well having watched the SHY season finale I must proclaim myself quite satisfied. Wrapped up Spirit's arc well (even though one of these days the heroes are gonna have to hold an intervention for her). Provided nice shipping fuel and some backstory for Shy. And it raised some interesting questions to consider as we await a second season. Like: what can be learned and gained from the Ice Ring? What's the deal with the newly introduced members of Those Who Dream? What exactly is Stigma's backstory? And of course the most pressing question of all:

You're telling me a shrimp made this rice?
