However, demonstrating similar quality, efficacy and safety to the reference product is essential for regulatory approval of biosimilars. New delivery methods for rhEGF administration are also an active area of investigation. This includes EGF encapsulated in nanoparticles, scaffolds, cell-sheet technologies and other controlled-release formulations. Sustained and localized delivery can potentially improve wound healing outcomes while reducing dosage requirements. Other combinatorial approaches involve delivery of rhEGF along with supporting factors like cytokines or stem cells.

Challenges and Future Directions

While early results with rhEGF are promising, further studies are still required before its widespread therapeutic use. Key challenges include potential safety risks at systemic doses, short biological half-life necessitating frequent applications, and high production costs limiting affordability. Future R&D needs to focus on overcoming these limitations through formulation strategies, assessing long-term safety, and establishing efficacy in large clinical trials. With continued advances, rhEGF-based treatments hold great promise to revolutionize wound care management and tissue regeneration applications.
